Started watching Heart of Loyalty - or The Heart of Jade, or 20 other names this drama has ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ - and it's a good one. I do like the main pairing, Little Seven & Zhan Zhao, though Little Seven is a bit too childish for me in certain scenes, but...

But at the moment, I like this pairing so much more, Little Seven's blind Second Brother, Xiao Chen, & Bai Yingyu. I don't usually like fragile female characters who need to be rescued but in this case... Hm, I think it's because Yingyu has so much dignity? That despite everything she's been through, she never complains? And that she makes the seemingly stone cold Xiao Chen care? I don't know. It's definitely working its magic on me, though.

While there are many heartwarming moments, the story deals with sensitive issues. That said, I loved it. It wasn't perfect by any means but it was a fulfilling story about friendship and revenge. I think the ending brought it from a 4 to a 5 overall for me. Cdrama endings always suck, but I felt that the last episode was entirely appropriate. It is a story of unlikely acquaintances working to achieve an end, and once that is done, they return to their own lives. The bonus episode was the icing on the cake, and really drove home the theme they were unsubtly going for (it is literally written in the end text). All in all it was a good watch if you, like me, enjoy heavy dramas about smart people scheming, underscored with beautiful relationships. One final praise I will give it is its brevity. Dramas like this tend to overstay their welcome but this did not. It ended right when it needed to and it ended beautifully. No notes. I’m actually really impressed with Zhang Yixing’s acting in this. I wasn’t expecting very much based on his previous dramas, honestly, but I’m pleasantly surprised. He’s still a bit stiff but it works with the character (he’s going through some shit, obviously, or there wouldn’t be a part for him in the drama), and he emulated the kid version’s physicality very well when necessary.

Also, my man Xu Bin is played by Qiao Zhenyu (who is doing fantastic), making this a two Xiao Hua show~
