Thinking about the conversation Laena and little Rhaena have in season 1 about Rhaena's dragon egg not hatching...

Rhaena clearly feels like a disappointment in her father's eyes because she doesn't have a dragon, and Baela does. She grows up with a chip on her shoulder because of it.

Laena does her best to comfort her – reminds her that few eggs hatch, and there is more than one way to bind herself to a dragon. She was in the same place once, with an older sibling who had a dragon from childhood. She claimed Vhagar at 15!

In contrast to Rhaena, kiddo Laena doesn't seem to have any resentment or insecurity about her being dragonless. That little girl in episode 2 was SO excited to talk about dragons. She had her eye on Vhagar, and she was determined to befriend her. Where Daemon led his child to feel ignored and insecure, Rhaenys and Corlys clearly raised a very self-confident, bold child. Laena not hatching a cradle egg hatch was an opportunity, not a failure.

You can tell that Rhaenys made sure her children never felt like they weren't enough; she loves them exactly as they are (eg, she doesn't take issue with Laenor's sexuality outside of it putting him in danger). And while Corlys wasn't the perfect parent, there's certainly a ton of love and affection between him and his children. They're his "everything."

Rhaenys probably had a very similar no-hatched-egg conversation with Laena at one point, and even reminded her daughter that she didn't claim Meleys until she was a teenager. Hell, SOMEBODY had to be telling the girl all those stories of Vhagar; I'd bet money it was Rhaenys.

And while there is some tension between Rhaena and Baela for their differences in circumstances, we only ever see Laenor as Laena's best friend and confidant. You can picture them as kids, with he and Seasmoke being her sworn protectors. (Laena would also definitely throw punches for them, lbr.) Both children fly with their mother, and both children learn all about dragons and their keeping. (Imagine trying to get two dragon-obsessed children into bed without being asked about 100 questions... 😆)

Anyways... it's very interesting parallel between generations of families. While it's sad we didn't get to see much of the Velaryon family dynamic, so much can be inferred from what we did see. Also, Rhaena needs a good, solid 5-minute hug from her grandma.

I think it’s so interesting that Steve Toussaint spoke in this article and said that when Corlys wakes up and tells Rhaenys that they shouldn’t declare to anyone and just take their grandkids to Driftmark and live their lives that he’s saying what he thinks she wants to hear. It’s not that he’s had a near death experience and that’s changed his priorities; he still wants to be apart of what is happening. But he wakes up, looks over and can see that he has hurt his wife, and he chooses to do what will make her happy.

What Corlys doesn’t realize is that what he thinks his wife wants is 6 years out of date. I’m sure they’ve communicated via raven over that time but it’s certainly not enough. After her children died, I’d say Rhaenys wanting to keep Baela and Rhaena on Driftmark and live their lives is exactly what she wanted. But then she was left on her own and the world around her had progressively gone to shit. Rhaenys knows the time for leaving is long gone but I think it speaks to their marriage that Corlys tries at his first opportunity to put things right with his wife.

I also like Rhaenys’ reaction to his suggestion. Rhaenyra’s boys are in jeopardy and Rhaenys chooses to not let that slide. I find her general attitude towards the boys is kind of like Catelyn Stark’s attitude towards Jon Snow. They both know that the children in their lives are bastards (Cat doesn’t like to talk about it, Rhaenys isn’t supposed to talk about it) and even though these children are meant to be their family, neither women can bring themselves to love the children as they should because they both know that the bastards leave their family vulnerable. Jace, Luke and Joff put Laenor in a dangerous position and Rhaenys can’t look past that. I’m sure after Laenor “dies” she feels even more justified in that position. Now, the difference between Rhaenys and Catelyn is when the boys are in real danger, Rhaenys clearly makes a choice to protect them as best she can (don’t think I didn’t see Rhaenys snatching those kids behind her when Alicent came running with that knife) and choosing to stay is an active choice of support.

I genuinely think that if they weren’t in such a political position, that Rhaenys wouldn’t care that Laenor’s sons aren’t biologically his. I think she’s a woman who feels quite a lot and who loves her family deeply. But she is in that position and so she has put some distance between her and the boys so she can act objectively to protect her family. I also think she is weary of the boys because of her wariness of Rhaenyra and Daemon.

But I think it says a lot about Rhaenys that when her husband presents her with what she probably deep down wishes they could do, her first response is of her grandchildren. Not of Rhaenyra being deserving of the throne, not of her worries of what kind of king Aegon will be, or the treachery of the Greens, she thinks of her grandchildren. Because when she’s really put to it, those boys are her family, and she will do what she can to ensure their safety.

He stared from afar, his eyes fixed on you and your now husband. The grip he had on his cup tightened, knuckles turning white. He tuned out the chatter of the people around him, attention solely on you.

You forced a smile when he cracked a joke, you had to hide the distaste you had when he touched your shoulder. You didn’t want to be married off to some man you barely knew, some man you didn’t love.

Your eyes traveled to your friend, his eyes staring right back at you. When Jace first found out you were marrying another, he didn’t want to believe it.

You two had this complicated relationship. You were sneaking around with the boy, hooking up, but it was all casual. That’s what you told yourself. Because you knew that it was since birth this loveless marriage had been planned.

“Excuse me for a moment.” You told your husband, interrupting him. His face fell, and he nodded. You smiled at the man, patting his arm and beginning to walk over to your best friend.

“A small part of me always hoped it would be us.” He admitted after a moment of silence between the both of you. You raised an eyebrow, he turned to face you again.

He raised his eyebrows now, curious as to what you were gonna suggest.

That’s how the both of you ended up in a room, you giggling as you shut the large doors. Your lips were on his in an instant, hands tangling into his curls.

“It’s your wedding. They’re gonna be looking for you.” He spoke when he pulled away for air, and you shrugged.

“Let them.” You murmured against his lips, both of you breathing heavily. You wrapped your legs around his waist, and he smiled as he carried you over to the bed.

He gently laid you down, lips leaving yours momentarily so that he could slide his pants off. He bunched your dress up, moving it out of the way. He looked down at you, leaning down to kiss you again. Your lips were like a drug to him, always tempting him.

➼ and daemon... just didn't love you the way rhaenyra did because he didn't know you, that's just how it was

➼ just a few days after their conversation, she's walking through the halls of the castle to go outside for some fresh air when she hears sobbing and crying from a nearby room

➼ she doesn't see much through the small crack of the door but there's a mirror right in her line of sight and through that she sees you sitting on the bed with a piece of paper in your hands, crying and sobbing all alone

➼ this is your chance, baela thinks and softly knock on the door as she opens it a bit weider to peek her head in

➼ she sees you wipe your cheeks from your tears as you hear someone entering and try to compose yourself as you turn around to face her, a suprised look on your face as you see who came in

➼ "i didn't want to disturb you but i also didn't want you to be alone when you're clearly not feeling well.. may i ask what happened?"

➼ "oh no, don't worry yourself baela, i'm fine, i just... wasn't feeling well but i'm all better, don't worry about it."

➼ but when she sees you reading a book by yourself, she joins you and asks if you can read to her, which you are only happy to

➼ rhaena is often hard to read because of her quietness and she's still young so she's often unsure about her place in this very big family

What's with people complaining about there being too many Targ!reader fics??

The show is called House of the Dragon - it's about Targaryens. House Targaryen is central to the story.

I saw it in regards to Cregan and there being a lot of Cregan x Targ!reader fics. Yeah... Cause it's House of the Dragon?

There's probably a reason for that, which is that people are requesting them? If nobody wanted to read Cregan x Targ reader then no one would be requesting them. But they are. Cause people want to read such stories.

Personal preference is a thing and you don't have to like these stories but just don't read them? I saw someone say 'Why can't I just be a normal regular person? Why am I always a Targ?" and again, probably because people like imagining themselves as Targs?

When you go through the Cregan x reader tag while yes, a lot are Targ reader or Velaryon reader, the vast majority are ambiguous wife!reader fics, where your house is not mentioned.

I get having pet peeves, we all do. For example, whenever I read a fic and I see the reader/oc claim Cannibal I just stop reading cause idk, it just irks me and it doesn't make sense in-universe but I'm not gonna go out of my way to criticize those writers who made that decision.

Or whenever I read a fic that's set in a medieval fantasy world (ASOIAF/LOTR/The Witcher) and a character calls someone 'baby' or asks 'are you okay?' it irks me and kills my immersion cause ain't no way Aemond or Geralt are calling you baby lol. Again, it's my personal pet peeve but whatever, I just get over it or stop reading.

In regards to OCs not being interesting enough? Again I feel like that's subjective? What do these OCs need to do to be interesting enough? How is them being from an incestuous, dragon-riding family not interesting enough? Now, this depends on the skill of the writer and how they choose to portray their character and whether they choose to explore how being in such a family affects a person.

You can only do so much when most people use similar backstories for their OCs. Of course, everyone will put their own spin on the trope but at the end of the day, there will be overlap and similarities.

Fic writers write out of their own good will and cause of their love for the stories/characters. They're not obligated to please everyone and frankly, that's just impossible. If you want to read more Tyrell!reader fics or whatever other house, write them yourselves.

let me tell you, i have been anticipating the funeral drama in this episode for WEEKS and it absolutely did not let me down.

as always i am happy that we got to see some of the dragons but i would have loved even more. where is syrax! i want to see her all grown up!

i’m glad we got the velaryons mourning laena, but it really did make me wish that we’d gotten to see more of her alive. laenor is clearly grieving his sister, but i honestly don’t think they ever had any significant scenes together.

corlys and rhaenys with their grandchildren was really sweet, i especially loved seeing rhaenys comfort rhaena and baela at the funeral.

helaena targaryen continues to be a weird little girl and i support her!

i love the idea of making aemond care more about helaena than aegon does, it’s a good characterization bit and also incredibly evil (cannot wait to see Certain Events that happen as a direct result of aemond’s actions utterly ruin their relationship).

why was this episode so dark. i could see everything but it was really gray :(

however i did like the part where everyone was standing around awkwardly after the funeral, the interpersonal drama was delicious.

matt smith and emma d’aracy have great chemistry, all the staring they did at the funeral made me SO impatient for them to actually interact, and their conversation on the beach was fantastic. 

loved getting to see them confront all their thoughts and feelings about each other that have built up over ten years. i’ve always found their relationship compelling to watch even though it’s obviously. you know. incestuous. it’s just fun to watch! and i feel less “step away from the underage girl” now that rhaenyra is older.

i know harwin strong is dead and never coming back but i’m still glad that we got to see jace mourning him and rhaenyra talking about their relationship.

a brothel …. a shack on the beach … daemon i am literally begging you to bring rhaenyra somewhere actually nice on your next date.

the scene of aemond claiming vhagar was both funny and awesome, the visual of this tiny little kid riding a huge old dragon and screaming his head off was hilarious but the moonlight dragon ride was very cool.

truly family solidarity as exemplified by the targaryen-velaryon kids is when your cousin that you just met for the first time that day wakes you up in the middle of the night to tell you your uncle stole her dead mom’s dragon so you go beat him up together!

i like the added detail that rhaena was planning to claim vhagar, it adds even more betrayal to aemond taking her instead.

is house of the dragon actually an extended psa about the dangers of giving young children knives? maybe so!

mom rhaenyra looking after her kids and making sure they’re okay is very important to me :)

honestly, i felt pretty bad for aemond in the big confrontation scene, he was kind of a jerk to the other kids but it can’t be fun to get yelled at by your dad when you’ve just lost an eye.

i absolutely LOVED the tension in that scene and the way that it built and built until alicent just went for it and tried to stab rhaenyra. characters going completely feral and unhinged in the BEST and alicent dropping her mask of cordiality and screaming at rhaenyra was so, so good.

the scene between rhaenyra and laenor was wonderful, i’m so glad the show made it clear that even though they have their differences and have been basically forced into a marriage together they still care about each other and their kids a lot.

loved that larys was like “hey alicent want me to stab a kid’s eye out for you? :)” and alicent was like “no dude i’ll actually TELL you when i want you to kill someone.” she’s learning!

there were 3 dragons when the boat was sailing away, does that mean helaena has already claimed dreamfyre?

when rhaenyra and daemon started talking about getting married i was SO worried that i was going to see them engage in some not chill behavior together and kill laenor so i’m glad that didn’t happen.

i do have to respect this show for avoiding another bury your gays by having laenor fake his death but. uh. is anyone ever going to tell corlys and rhaenys that their son isn’t dead?

the valyrian wedding between daemon and rhaenyra was really cool but tbh i was kind of laughing at them passionately making out with tongue in front of their kids.

i say this every week but i am VERY excited for next week, looks like we’re in for even more family drama.

What do you think is driving Corlys's thinking about his succession, in the show? Especially not liking Joffrey or Rhaena as potential heirs? Is it to do with blood or age or gender? Or about his perceived idea of what an heir should be? Or all? Or something else?

UGH okay so I want to start this off by saying Corlys is one of my favorite characters from the Dance, I think he's soooo well conceived as a parallel/a play on the same trope as like Tywin, Tyrion, Bloodraven (ish), and I think Corlys' story is going to be massively important to how Tyrion's endgame plays out so I definitely feel like I look at his writing with a much more critical eye. That plus him being one of the only characters of color in both shows that is a main character, and also being the darkest skinned person of them all by far, in general, I just think about him a lot lol.

SO.

I think his writing is soooo confusing most of the time. I'm not sure that they really think about what Corlys is feeling and moreso they think about him in terms of what his role is. They see his endpoint and they force him to get there and aren't quite as in tune with WHY. It's frustrating to me because I think there's a very easy way to get him to where he is at the end of the Dance emotionally while still playing with the story about gender the way they want but they just....once again, do Not have the time to do it with the amount of episodes they have and so he gets shuffled to the side.

I think his drive is more about what an heir should be like. He wants someone who is similar to himself - someone who can Play The Game, someone is a self starter, who is willing to take a risk and watch it pay off rather than sit on the sidelines and play it safe. He wants, above all, someone he can groom. I don't mean in the sexual sense, I mean he wants someone he can train, he wants a protege (*qimir voice* he wants an acolyte). That is why, imo, he was so willing to accept Luke despite everything. He had years to train Luke to act the way he wanted, or years for Daemon and Rhaenys and Laenor to train Luke to be a proper Velaryon. I think Corlys is very aware of his age and is thus not looking any longer for an heir he has to train to be bold, he wants someone who is already bold, already a fighter. Joffrey is much too young. Rhaena is much too feminine, and I don't even think Rhaena registered to him as a potential heir because she's Laena's daughter and not Laenor's daughter. I think he offered it to Baela because Baela has ~that spark~ he wants in his heir, and I think he's drawn to Alyn for that same reason. They're both stubborn, willing to fight, but they're never stupid about the fights they pick.

Do blood and gender play a role in his mind? Yes, absolutely. In fact, I think him bypassing Joff and Rhaena is in part for those reasons. He knew Luke, he loved Luke, I don't think Corlys has that connection to Joffrey and it's part of why he's not fond of the idea of naming Joffrey heir. As for Rhaena - again, I think he feels she's too soft, too feminine. It's crazy to me (*benoit blanc voice* it makes no sense) that Baela didn't push for Rhaena but I get why Corlys doesn't even think of her. Corlys never sees Laena as a viable heir, it was always Laenor and Laenor's kids no matter what. If Laenor had a daughter, I think Corlys might have arrived at that conclusion earlier. But Rhaena is the daughter of a daughter. She's not fierce and skilled with weapons like Baela, she's not a dragon rider, and I do think in Corlys eyes that makes her a bit lesser even though she's the perfect candidate as Laena's daughter who doesn't have any inheritance at all because Luke is dead. But I think because she doesn't have (what he views as) Rhaenys' fire, she's not a candidate.

You pushed back a strand of your hair as you walked through the crowded halls of Westeros High. You hugged your books to your chest, blowing a breath as you listened to some cheerleaders talking about the upcoming winter formal. They all seemed giddy, trying to one-up the other by talking about the dresses they would wear.

Your best friend Baela Targaryen had been trying to get you to go dress shopping with you and her twin sister Rhaena, but you had refused every time.

You let out a sigh, deep in your own thoughts as you arrived at your locker. You furrowed your brows a bit seeing a small torn up piece of paper neatly folded. You reached out to grab it but jumped when you felt hands come down on your shoulders.

“Morning!”

“Gods, Baela!” You sighed when she only laughed. “It’s too early in the morning to scare me like that.”

Baela only laughed more. “I’m sorry, Y/N. You know I just love messing with you.”

You rolled your eyes but the smile was on your lips. You turned back to your locker quickly grabbing the piece of paper before slamming your locker. “Come on, we’re going to be late for first period.”

You pushed back some of your hair as you headed to your seat which was beside a dark haired boy named Jacaerys Velaryon, or better known as Jace. He had been your childhood friend since before the two of you could even talk, although everything seemed to change when you hit puberty. You had pushed him away to the point where you rarely text him anymore, yet you could not avoid him as your lab partner.

“Good morning, Y/N,” Jace greeted giving you a small smile.

You gave him a nod in response while pulling out your notebook followed by your Chemistry textbook. A frown tugged at your when the piece of paper fluttered out of your pocket and you reached for it, but Jace grabbed it first. You looked at yourself in the mirror, the light pink dress just brushing at your knees. You had a light layer of makeup and your hair was done up, Rhaena having helped you get ready. You decided to surprise Jace at the Homecoming dance.

You felt the butterflies in your stomach as you neared the gym doors, everyone inside with their usual clusters of people. You furrowed your brows scanning the dance floor and your heart dropped to your stomach at the sight of Jace dancing with Baela. The way he looked at her with that boyish smile of his only caused your heart to shatter. The tears stung your eyes before you turned while wiping your eyes. You should have told him how you felt and now you blew it.

“Y/N? Y/N?”

You blinked a bit, snapping back into reality as you looked over at Baela. You looked back down at the tray of cafeteria food in front of you, furrowing your brows a bit. You never brought up the eighth grade Homecoming to Baela, not wanting her to feel bad that she was dancing with your crush- she couldn’t have known.

“Did you say something?” You asked looking back to your friend.

“I just wanted to see if you opened your letter yet.”

In an AU where after both marriages to Daemon and Laenor Rhaenyra has had no children at all but not of her own free will (so no kids with Harwin), how would that affect the characterisation of Viserys, Rhaenyra, Alicent, Aegon?

I have my ideas of course but I'm curious what you think 😀

Okay I had to think about this one a bit but I actually think that in this scenario the Dance probably wouldn't have happened.

If Rhaenyra has no children at all, Aegon is her heir by default. In this situation, it's not really worth risking a war to put Aegon on the throne earlier, especially because Rhaenyra now has an actual vested interest in keeping her brothers alive. The thing is, although sometimes we hear that Rhaenyra had to have children to secure the succession, the succession was secure through her brothers and their children, strictly speaking. Having your very own bloodline on the throne is not strictly necessary (just look at Elizabeth I), it's a want, not something needed for the good of the realm. So in this situation its in Otto and Alicent's best interests just to wait her out. Worst case scenario, Rhaenyra outlives Aegon (and if he's still hard drinking in this world, this isn't unlikely) and Aegon's child succeeds him which means....

If all else remains the same, the thing to do would be to pursue Baela as a bride for Aegon (how convenient for me!). In this scenario Daemon isn't getting any closer to the throne than that unless he attempts to usurp Rhaenyra with the Velaryons, and for all that he sucks I just can't see him doing that. A Baela/Aegon match would be a smart move in any scenario, but in this one it's ideal because the only real threats to the succession now come from the Velaryon line and Daemon's chaotic self, and if you neutralize the Velaryons you neutralize Daemon too because any resistance Daemon could possibly mount would always depend upon Velaryon backing. Otherwise he's just one guy with a dragon. That said, if Rhaenyra dies at a normal-ish age, Daemon is likely going to be long gone by then, so he's really kind of a non-issue in a world where he only has the two daughters by Laena.

Alicent is probably a lot more chill because her sons are not really in any danger. Instead of being obstacles for Rhaenyra, Rhaenyra instead needs them in order to prove that the succession is handled. Rhaenyra might actually have some motivation to bond with Aegon at the very least, seeing as he is her heir. And honestly, it's pretty likely that Aegon is a bit more well adjusted in a world where he doesn't have a sword of damocles hanging over his head the whole time, and in which his mother can just be a regular old slightly neurotic repressed lesbian (and hell, in this scenario maybe she and Rhaenyra could actually have a discreet affair. hmm...). Viserys probably still ignores his non-Rhaenyra children but maybe that fucks them up a bit less because it doesn't feel like he's actually trying to get them killed, it just makes him more of a regular asshole father (if the regular asshole was a king).

In a lot of ways, this would kind of be a win-win scenario, so it's interesting that so many people jump on the "Rhaenyra had to have kids to secure the line of succession, what was she supposed to do, force Laenor??" thing. Clearly Rhaenyra didn't have to have kids, she wanted to, which is absolutely her choice and her right, but it also makes her a lot like her father.

His sudden presence startled her, for she had not paid much attention and did not see him coming.

“My prince,” she said, lowering her head since she could not bow adequately.

“Lady Velaryon,” he replied. To her surprise, he lowered himself, sitting by her side at the beach.

She stayed silent, not knowing what to say. What could be said to a prince — especially the one with so many rumours spreading? She had heard all about his relations with the maids; she noticed his habit of drinking and his aspiration to the Throne; therefore, it was best to stay quiet.

In silence, the teens stayed for at least a couple of minutes. It was only the waves and the wind.

Y/n wondered if he called her Lady Velaryon for a lack of knowing her full name.

She obviously was one of them — she had the hair — but she was just cousins with Lady Laena, the deceased they were there for.

“Do you like here?” he asked her.

His voice sounded hurt somehow.

She thought about his question. Did she? Pantos seemed calm enough, better than the castle, for sure, but y/n had so many privileges in the company of her family and the Targaryens.

“I think Laena didn’t,” she answered, surprising the prince.

He tried not to, but he couldn’t hold his snort.

“I’m sorry to hear that,” he stared deep at the horizon, and Lady y/n watched his gaze.

“I’m not,” she said, only later noticing that she might’ve pealed condescending. “It is less lonely with the Targaryens.”

Aegon smiled, turning back to face the Lady. “Yes, I suppose it is.”

The two didn’t take long to get back to their hush thoughts. Y/n, of course, wondered what could be bothering the Prince, but she didn’t utter a word.

She stared at him, analysing his figure — his nose bridge, silver hair and beautiful eyes. If King, Aegon would be prettier than most of the ones y/n saw.

“Are you okay, my Prince?”

He grunted, not out of impoliteness, but in sudden disgust of his title. “Just call me Aegon,” he said, facing her.

“Well, I’m y/n, in that case,” she smiled, trying to pass a good impression. Had they just become friends?

Instead, he got up, cleaned his pants and looked one last time at y/n, who didn’t clearly understand his last word to her — goodbye? See you around? — because it didn’t matter. All she could think of was his eyes, his expression — how that second there, with him, standing, and her, sitting, represented all they could ever get to be.

She was below him. They weren’t friends. It was naive of her to have believed in that.

So she watched him leave. The Prince did not want to be King, not that day. Would he in the future actually be able to give her some advice? Who knew. All she could do was hope that, when the day comes, his offer would still be standing.

yes but since everyone can see they're not laenors blood they cant get away with that unfortunately. if they did somehow look like laenor (or at least rhaenyra) things might have been different.

because westerosi inheritance relies on marriage contracts and legitimate succession for stability; when a marriage between two houses is decided upon its with the expectation the union will produce children that are representative of a kinship and this works to keep peace and order. a major contract with house velaryon was broken by house targaryen whether laenor cares about that or not.

vaemond wasnt. rhaenys barely is. in the book multiple velaryons werent. its not just about family pride its about the instability caused. kinslaying is such a big deal because blood ties are all but sacred - theres a social contract - this idea you owe something to those with your blood and that those ties (usually) ensure you are safe with and supported by your kin. any velaryon not wanting a boy who isn't bound to them by blood on the driftwood throne is perfectly understandable because they have no reason to believe he feels any true loyalty to them. and regardless, we need to consider the precedent it sets for the realm as a whole if a child were allowed to inherit through a man it was known they werent the legitimate offspring of.

no. legitimisation is a formal process and viserys would have had to admit they were bastards and then legitimise them as strongs or targaryens. they could never be legitimised as trueborn velaryons because thats what they're already masquerading as.

viserys wasnt all powerful, he couldnt make anything true just by saying it. he had the power to change laws as king, but his contract with his lords was reciprocal - he had to keep to the agreed upon laws of the realm himself (this is why the doctrine of exceptionalism needed to exist for the targaryens to continue practicing incest). viserys would have had to actively change the law in order for his grandson to somehow legally inherit driftmark as the adopted son of laenor, but of course he couldnt do that so he just doubled-down on the lie surrounding their birth.

yes. this is feudal world. their way of life is archaic in many ways. and yes this is apparent in how this society and their laws only recognises parentage through a blood tie. dura lex sed lex; the law is the law even if we dont like it, and breaking it has consequences regardless. as primitive as these laws seem they keep this particular world stable, and this situation threatens that stability. change and progress is all well and good, but placing a bastard on the throne by calling him trueborn would not be progress because it would do nothing to encourage recognition of the rights of other bastards (honestly it'd probably just get a lot of bastards killed by their trueborn siblings, now fearful of them posing a genuine threat to their inheritance).

About corlys, just, like, in general. Like if season 1 corlys were to have a Christmas’ Future type moment with the man that we see at the end of season 2, how do you think he would react?

I'll go with Corlys at the end of Episode One because during that episode, quite a lot changes and his opportunities and ambitions change along the way. So it's a Corlys who has just sworn his oath to Rhaenyra but is fully aware the King is pretty available for a wife (after a comfy six months obvs) and needs more heirs, and the Stepstones are a mess but not as much as a mess as they will be in another six months.

The big thing, obviously, is that he's lost his entire family. Basically. That's the gist, at least. Instead of these grand ambitions he has for a Velaryon dynasty (and I do think the cogs are whirring at the end of Episode 01, for both Rhaenys and Corlys), he's got a dead daughter, a dead son, a dead brother, a dead grandson and a dead wife. The rest of his grandsons aren't his but he's cool about it (sort of, ish, not like he has much choice and actually, he's actively not choosing them by the end) and he's got two granddaughters as well - somehow fathered by his wife's twerp of cousin.

Okay, that last bit is probably more Rhaenys's feelings about her poxy little brat of a relation. Corlys respects and likes Daemon. Let's just not dig into how it came about that Daemon married Rhaenyra. Or Vaemond died. Or his son. Let's actually just not poke that with a stick at all.

But, yes, back to it: losing his kids and his wife. That's just... unreal, to him, at that point. At any point but especially then. None of his family is in danger in any way, shape or form. His daughter is 12, his son is 14. They're happy. His wife - I remember Steve did an interview and he was asked if Corlys had ever thought about Rhaenys dying before him and his answer was that he didn't think Corlys ever thought that would ever happen - that's probably stunning. And then you add the fact that she dies during battle (idk how much this Corlys would be told by future!Corlys)... that doesn't fit with the image of his wife that he has, bless him.

I think the overwhelming emotion would be shock. I can't think of a single thing that Corlys has been through, and is preparing to do, in and by the end of Series 02, that an Episode 01 Corlys could imagine or expect to happen. None of it. Honestly, I think S2 Corlys is still trying to wrap his head around a lot of it himself.

And none of it would be anything he'd want for himself. It just sucks, all around. It's kind of inconceivable. Because what happened was inconceivable at that time. So many dominos had to fall, so many twists of fate.

I think he'd be alarmed at the realm being at war and himself shipping out to go and take King's Landing (like, obviously he wouldn't change that but the guy was really hoping in the 20+ years that he might get a cushy retirement and not have to deal with this sort of nonsense).

He'd be pretty chuffed about being Hand of the Queen - because this Corlys actually gives a damn about that sort of status at the moment. Not sure what he'd think about Alyn and Addam. Some sort of pride. But would he feel ashamed of himself presently or himself in the future? Or not bother with that sort of reaction at all? Denial, probably, especially when it comes to the idea of possibly making Alyn his heir. Very much like future!Corlys.

I think he thinks he's mellowed in his old age, to be honest. And, that's fair. He may be Hand of the Queen but he's yet to storm into a single meeting under that post. But yes, grief and nearly dying takes a toll on a man.

If it was a Christmas Future sort of a deal, could our Series 01 Corlys come out of it a changed man? Meh. I think he'd do what he could to avert the danger but whether he'd learn his lesson in regard to his ambitions... I doubt it. He's a very stubborn man. He likes to achieve, he likes to throw his weight around. His flaws wouldn't disappear. Though, of course, some opportunities look a lot less attractive, knowing what's to come. And he'd do everything he could to save what was most precious to him: his children and his wife.

If he knew that his ambitions would cost him his family... he'd think twice. He'd be more cautious and listen to his wife straight away. I don't think he ever thought that his ambitions would have that kind of a cost, though. I think he always thought they'd be safe.

And I think he thought his wealth and his privilege and the way he can intimidate and his reputation and his Fleet and might etc etc... made him untouchable. Made them untouchable. They meant he could solve any problem. Except he's wrong.

hehehe thank uuuu, I'm very much a sucker for modern aus 🤭 I did make one up for one of my asoiaf ocs (if you want to hear about it I'd be happy to share) I don't think I can write it all out by myself honestly but I could co-author/come up with ideas if you or anyone ever wants.

Random Lore that's all over the place so please bear with me:

I feel like the Targaryen business is like something in steal? (Valyrian steal lol) And they have heavy political influence? Are somewhat fallen royalty? Kinda hc that basically every asoiaf region is modern au is independent and not conquered, individually used to have royal families then revolutions happened, now there are elections and vice-presidents for ever region, rather than absolute monarchy. (The latest VP for the crownlands is Lyonel Strong)

Old grandpa Jaehaerys was a raging misogynist, and he didn't want Rhaenys to become the new head of the fam so he gave Viserys 80% of company shares, 10% for Daemon and gave Rhaenys the remaining 10% percent. The Velaryon's own a shipping business and the Arryns have an airport business.

Between managing the company, being sick and playing with his legos Viserys doesn't have a lot of time overall. He neglected bby Rhaenyra, as in didn't spend much time with her and mostly left things to Aemma because she's the woman and that's her job (fuck u Viserys) then Aemma dies and he sorta overindulges Rhaenyra as in let's her do whatever she wants and gives into any demands she has, and trys to spend some time with her because he's guilty af about Aemma.

After marrying Alicent he basically dose what he did before Aemma died, leaving everything the childrearing to Alicent because she's a woman sooo 🤡 stars neglecting Rhaenyra and just doing whatever he did, this is also a reason why Rhaenyra comes to mislike Alicent, since belives that it's all the evil stepmoms fault that her dad is ignoring her again, this if fuled by Daemion too who hates Otto and Alicent's guts since a new wife means there could be boys and he's gonna get even less of the company shares.

Alicent dose try to be a good Stepmom (In my head Alicent's mom Clarice Florent, and she died a year after Gwayne was born so Alicent was about 8 herself when it all happened, she understands what Rhaenyra is going through and doesn't hold it against her) Alicent shows up/ plans every important event in Rhaenyra's life (school events, dance competitions, plans birthdays...) and eventually Rhaenyra somewhat warms up to Alicent and her half-siblings, but I feel like there would still be a somewhat resentment because watching Alicent give birth to baby boys something that her own mom had died for ... Yea Rhaenyra is complicated but I love her.

Meanwhile Daemon is being Daemon lol he's the cool uncle to Rhaenyra who's travelling the world and pops by occasionally to cause a ruckus then bounce off (I hc modern!daemon being a racer/nepo baby who gets into scandals left, right and centre) also him and Rhea Royce had an old money/arranged sorta marriage and then divorced after Jaehaerys dies.

Okay so I picture Alicent as someone who's been sheltered to an extent especially in regards to her sexualities, gets taught the standard things (a woman's greatest joy in life is being a mom, a woman must save herself for her marriage, a woman must be obedient towards her husband...) and Otto especially encourages all of that. collage stars at? Idk we don't have college in our education system it's straight to uni after highschool lol. Either way picture Alicent is a first year in university at 18, she's so excited to make friends and do new things, Otto somewhat indulges that and let's her be.

Then Viserys comes along, Alicent who's not yet finished her first year catches his attention at sunday church. He goes to Otto and basically asks for Alicent's hand in marriage to which Otto says yes, because this is a great opportunity for the family to social climb.

I feel like Alicent has mixed feelings about it when Otto tells her, on one hand she has to leave her studies, and barely realized dreams to marry a man years her senior, on another hand isn't this what woman have to do? Isn't this all that her father and religion have taught her? Her own parents got married straight out of highschool so it's the right thing to do isn't it? But what about bet dreams? Is she even ready to be a mom? What dose it mean to be a wife? Will her new husband be kind to her?

And her mixed feelings about it all makes it easy for Otto to push her forward in the direction he wants, he also moves to KL with Alicent after her marriage just to ... Help her fit into the new role of wife and mother (he just wants to control her and social climb lol)

Years later when Alicent is planning for her divorce:

Otto: he's a good man Alicent!

Alicent: why didn't you marry him then!

Otto: ...

I think Viserys genuinely wouldn't care all that much what happens to his kids with Alicent... Plus I feel like at that point he's also dealing with his sickness too and seeing as Alicent is so determined to get a divorce he just goes along with things. As for company shares he gives majority to Rhaenyra (basically made a will after Aemma dies that almost everything will go to Rhaenyra) after marrying Alicent he gave her 5% shares as a wedding gift of sorts, as for their four kids... He gave them 20% to divide between eachother equally. So Rhaenyra still has 55% which wins her majority, this is also Alicent's motivation for divorce she thinks it's absolutely unfair for her kids to each get 5% shares and Rhaenyra to get 55%.

Picture Alicent finding Viserys's will in the safe and going crazy lmaooo she's like wtf I've spent years in this hell and now this... then she argued with Viserys and tell him either he changes the will or they're getting a divorce.

I love Alicole too! (the knight and his queen can't get anymore romantic than that tbh) I actually picture Criston getting fired by Rhaenyra, something about how she asks him to sleep with her on her 18th birthday and he says no, but paparazzi take weird photos of them and that pissed Viserys off so he fires Criston. I think Alicent would be against it she's known Criston for years and he doesn't seem the type to be unprofessional so she vouched for him but Viserys didn't listen.

But yea getting fired by the Targaryen's left a bad stain of Criston's flawless record and he couldn't get hired as a bodyguard anymore 😔 Alicent heard about it and arranged a job for him at Oldtown as a security guard in the Hightower University. This boosted Criston's good impression of Alicent, since she helped him in his hour of need. But I don't think anything happened between them during Alicent's marriage (she's too much of a religious girly to cheat no matter how miserable her life is) it's only after she divorced and moves to Oldtown that she truly gets to know Criston and they bond, he also helps her with the kids and overall everything becomes a constant in her/the kids lives.

Throwing in uncle Gwayne in here because I feel like he'd be so sad for his sister, nephews and niece. And then sees Criston around and gets all protective because one man already fucked up Alicent's life he's not about to let another one do the same, but then ends up getting to know Criston and becomes best buddies with him lol. Also picture Gwayne who's a teen being the only one who didn't want Alicent to marry Viserys and leave Oldtown, since she's more of a mother to him in all honesty given how he was barley a year old when Clarice dies.

Jaehaerys would 100% do this, I didn't even bat an eye. Daemon as nepobaby doing rich people sport is so him, I can see him racing and raging if he ever loses, his divorce was the fastest ever, it happened two days after grandpa's demise.

Daemon would 100% undermine nyra's relationship with alicent, it's a very him thing.

I too picture Ali as sheltered, her mother's death played part on it too. We don't have college here either, so straight to uni! Her uneasiness would be used by Otto, he has a chance in a lot of money (wait until he discovers about it).

I like to think that at some point between Aegon being around six, and before Daeron pops out Alicent start to become more smart inside her household like well no one is actually paying much attention to me, might as well snoop around. Maybe after her father says or points something out about the children's inheritance/their future and she grows suspicious about what is really to their name - she have a vague idea about it. Alicent have her four, Rhaenyra turn eighteen and has her first scandal that Alicent tries to cover with the best of her abilities, Nyra tells her off as if it was her fault and Criston loses his job and Alicent helps him under the wraps after he tells her what really happened.

Aegon turns nine and Alicent has enough proof of having wasted her life, not much to fight for, already traumatized and rather lonely depressed children. Bad family examples, bad family relationships, is RVDR playing family and them in the corner as a separate thing, she has had enough. I like to think she goes around the red mansion opening financial book after book, vault after vault and boom, she calls 0-800-10-Larys Strong, provides paper after paper, including the recently diagnosis of her husband, and when everything is practically ready she goes to Viserys, if he splits everything equally to the children good, if not, he can rot in hell.

I pictured she looked at her children and said "Let's see what they are made off" and just put the baby in her hip, placed them in a car and left. "Mom where are we going?" "Somewhere we will be happy."

Aegon probably understood it better than his siblings who wanted to go home, because this new house is smaller and where are the servants? Though it probably took a toll on his mental health, he only started therapy in late teen years, after his uncle and criston realize he's alcoholic. He helped his mother raise the children at first but it made his relationship with her very fragile and distant, I believe he likes Criston because he's good with his siblings and mother.

Aemond and Helaena probably learned to accept it, but turned out a little better than Aegon, a lot of therapy for them too. They liked the guy that picked them after school.

Daeron was a baby, this is the life he knew since 1 yo. He was the one who turned out mostly okay. He doesn't know who Viserys is.

I wonder what Alicent does for a living, I doubt Viserys would pay her anything beyond two cents for food.

There's also something I would love to see: Rhaenyra's eventual visit. I think Aegon goes what is she doing here? And Alicent just drive them away while they talk. But what would they talk about? Rhaenyra have her convictions but those are her half-siblings, Viserys is going old and sicker, he never asked to see any of them, she thought Alicent placed a restriction, but she discovered that wasn't the case.

Uncle Gwayne would 100% be team no new in-law, Criston would have a lot to prove.

Best Targ Women ! Needed to make my ranking for some reason.

1) Daenerys Targaryen (best girl ever may she live and prosper). She's every goddess ever.

2) Rhaena Targaryen (black bride) : iconic reserved lesbian who goes out of her mind sometimes in really impressive ways. Compares herself to the woman who ruined her life. Has tons of girlfriends (goals). Dies probably sad, almost alone. Hates most of her family anyways.

3) Rhaenyra Targaryen : So perfect in her imperfections. Loving mother, unquestionable heir to the Iron Throne, privileges gone to her head, political disaster in many aspects. Hate her, love her, she can't really leave you indifferent.

4) Aerea Targaryen : first female Targ heir, absolute teenage chaos on two foot intent on making the world a hell for those she disliked. Is living under the name of her twin sister (who lives under hers), which identity wise must be real weird for a kid. Horrifying death that will give you nightmares.

5) Elaena Targaryen : I need to know everything about her life it's criminal we don't. But she was the boss & controlled the economy. She was hot at 70.

6) Daena Targaryen : I need to know everything about her life like seriously (2). Rebellion ! Her brazen legacy haunted house Targaryen forever. Still does.

7) Alysanne Targaryen : She's not perfect, but she did a hell of a lot for Westeros and women, and stood by her principles (equality for women in matters of inheritance and education).

8) Naerys Targaryen : She just has something special. A magnificent aura of doom & religion.

9) Visenya Targaryen : love hate relationship with Visenya. She's so interesting but also she wrecked the life of my best girl Rhaena & raised her son to be a psycho tyrant misogynist (which is a great part of why she's interesting cause like WTF girl).

10) Rhaena of Pentos : cute cute cute girl. Has a pink dragon she probably named either by watching the sun rises or to make a clever metaphor (it is a clever metaphor !). Has a sense of duty. Is the opposite of her brazen twin Baela. Last dragonrider till Daenerys.

Plus, Targaryen women with potential (but not much action/info on them) :

- Aelora Targaryen whose story just begs to be told in full. Cause like, accidentelly killing your brother ? Being heir to the Iron throne afterwards anyway ? Damn.

- Jaehaera Targaryen, as the neurodivergent and ironically female heir of the famously misogynistic faction of the Dance of Dragons. Like come on.

- Baela Targaryen : Okay we do know about her and her character I just couldn't fit her in the top ; I'm mainly interested in the hypothetical/headcanon dilemna she could have had in the Velaryon succession matter. Mainly between being legally the heir to Driftmark & by it possibly independant (which suits her character), and her betrothal & fondness towards Jace (and future as queen consort). Along that of course, thoughts over women's rights & bastards' place.

- Rhaella Targaryen (sister to Aerea) cause like inside on the faith + similar identity crisis worthy situation. Like technically the legitimate heir to the throne during Jaehaerys' reign.

- Daenys the Dreamer : like OF COURSE. I have headcanons. Of course I want to know more about her prophecies & her character. Or make it all up if I can't have it.

- Shiera Seastar ; I mean we don't actually know that much about the lady. She was witchy and liked by Bloodraven. Then what ? Then what. She was maybe the Westerosi Elizabeth Báthory. Then what.

- Daenerys of Dorne : really want to know what her time in Dorne was like. After all, her marriage was of historical proportions and she's implied to have had some good notions in ruling. Also how did she feel about the Blackfyre rebellion ?

- Helaena Targaryen : I do like making up headcanon about her lately. Gentle, spineless, lonely, crazy, crazed for life but kept inside a cage. Betrayed her sister, under difficult circumstances. But where they ever sisters in any real sense ?
