From what Lando can see through the half-open door, there’s a guy sitting at a large table looking down at his keyboard. All Lando can plainly see is a head of dark hair, his nose, and a large bottom lip. Lando thinks he’s seen the guy around even if he doesn’t know his name. He’s beyond intimidating in a way too-attractive people often are, but Lando’s desperate. The guy’s head shoots up, eyes wide in surprise, when Lando knocks on the open door. He’s probably in the middle of office hours and not expecting anyone to need him. His gaze is as piercing as Lando remembers from the previous few times. “Can I help you?” the guy asks, probably realizing Lando’s not one of his students. And while Lando’s seen him, he doesn’t think he’s ever heard him speak. The sound of his voice is a deep timbre that curls around the English words. Lando wonders what this guy teaches and if he would be allowed to audit the class just to get more of it. Or: Lando and Carlos are in a Ph.D. program navigating both graduate school challenges as well as an ill-advised friends-with-benefits situation that has no chance of going wrong.

So, 2018 is coming to a close, so it's time for a little summary!

To be honest the most astounding thing for me is the overwhelmingly warm reception I've gotten by the bnha fandom. I'm seriously floored by how kind and supportive a lot of you have been, and words cannot express how grateful I am for it.

One of my resolutions for 2018 was "post at least once a month" and I can't say I've always stuck to it... But considering I was busy working on my thesis for a good portion of my summer, and then with deadlines and graduation for the rest of my autumn, I'm pretty damn proud of what I managed to accomplish. I'm pretty damn proud that I didn't give up, because that way I was able to find such lovely, welcoming readers. A real community, you know? People who engaged with my writing, who actually encouraged me to do what I love the most.

This year I also decided to go full self-indulgent, and to write and post anything I completed. I was super anxious about it, too, since I'm always hyper-critical of anything I create. I wasn't sure if that was gonna help at all with my motivation, or if it would've brought me out of the writer's block I was struggling with since the previous year.

I wasn't sure if changing fandoms, if being self-indulgent, and if writing what I wanted to read, instead of what I thought people would wanna read, was gonna make a difference. I wasn't sure if accepting prompts again, after receiving zero feedback the previous time I tried doing that, was gonna sink me deeper in my self-doubt or would made me crawl my way back out.

But I was like: well, it can't get worse, can it? I already lost my spark.

At the very least, if my writing won't reach anyone (again), this time I'm doing this mostly for myself. At the end of the day, if I don't get feedback, I will still enjoy the process. And not stress out too much about results, you know?

But then...

But then, you see the stats.

And let me tell you. Feedback matters. Showing support matters. My word count this year was the highest of all 4 years I've been on ao3 - a measly 44k, but that's more than double my count for 2017! - and not gonna lie, it has a lot to do with the constant encouragement some of you have been blessing me with. Knowing that I reached you guys, that somehow my writing wasn't just something that stayed with you until you hit the last line and then forgot about it, mattered.

I'm so incredibly grateful for every single comment, keysmash, kudo and bookmark.

Why I Think a Partner's Reaction to Fanfiction is Important

My story of how I came to realize my ex was a controlling, self-concious, possessive, toxic piece of human garbage with the one of the first signs being how he reacted to me writing fanfiction. It's a long post but if you do end up reading it, I appreciate it 💕 I had the need to write this and if nothing else, hopefully you can learn or relate to this story.

For some background, I have been an avid lover and writer of fanfiction since middle school. I began my first fic back in 2017 on a whim based off a quotev quiz result and Gary Wright's song Dream Weaver. It is now over 77k words and has an unfinished sequel with about 44k words. In addition to that, I've written an abundance of oneshots.

Fanfiction has always been an outlet for me. It allowed me to indulge in my fantasies as well as grow as a writer. It brought me countless smiles with every like and comment each story or chapter recieved- it made me feel as though I actually had potential as a writer. It boosted my self-confidence majorly which led to me being a much happier and fulfilled individual than I was before. Though even when I did have my bad days, I could conjure up a story and express such emotions within this fictional space that would result in real world relief.

Nevertheless, reading fanfiction has constantly and continuously brought me more joy than I could even express. It's helped me in more ways than I ever thought it would. I am beyond grateful for my fellow fanfic writers because of the happiness they bring into this world.

In 2018, I got in an online relationship with a 24 year old man. I was freshly 18. I didn't expect the age difference to be so detrimental to our relationship but I was wrong and well, I'll save those details for another story. Regardless, he had much more relationship experience than I did and because of that and my own feelings of uncertainty about relationships, there was an automatic power dynamic.

In the beginning, things were lovey dovey as they always are. There were a few "hiccups" (signs I would recognize later on to be a part of this possessive behavior of his) where he would claim a friend of mine was flirting and I would flirt back. He would get annoyed and try to get me to stop gaming with said friend. These moments of "flirting" were nothing more than playful banter in games.

One night on a call, I decided I wanted to tell him about my favorite hobby: writing fanfiction. I was a little embarrassed and he could tell, after all, I was still very shy about my writing in general. But writing fanfiction was important to me, it made me so, so happy and I wanted to show him this world that brought me such happiness!

I thought he would maybe playfully tease me about it but overall, be happy and supportive of me and my blog.

Instead, he got upset. He thought that me writing fanfiction was the equivalent to "emotional cheating" and that it was inappropriate for me to write all this while I was in a relationship with him. I tried to explain it: emphasize on how it's an outlet, how it's a community, how it's a hobby and that while I may write little love stories, I still loved him. I explained how every little comment and like made me smile and how this hobby helped me grow as a writer and how it made so happy but none of that mattered. He made sure I knew his stance on it and while he never explicitly told me to stop- he made sure that he placed that lingering seed of guilt in my mind to make me stop writing.

So I did.

I stopped writing.

I stopped writing because I was made to feel guilty and shameful for writing fanfiction on Tumblr and AO3 by my boyfriend at the time.

Later on, he started to guilt me about more things. How I would spend more time with friends than him (even though I didn't) and that lead to me no longer gaming because I didn't want to get him upset with me. He tried to cut me off from my friends, especially the ones that called him out on his controlling behavior. He told me if we ever broke up, he wouldn't be my friend and that scared me because of how attatched I had become. So even though it got to a point where I was miserable, I didn't want to break up with him because it meant this person who I loved would leave me for good. He would tell me I couldn't be friends with his "stream friends" because it was inappropriate. Anyway, I could go on about all these behaviors of his but it always boiled down to cutting me off from my support system and taking away anything that was even remotely a "threat" to our relationship.

It was always funny though how these rules only applied to me though. He had girls in his stream call him "Daddy" and he would encourage it. He was allowed to "playfully" flirt both innocently and not so innocently with other girls yet he got annoyed and made me feel guilty about writing FICTIONAL love stories that were mainly fluff and angst fics.

I finally broke things off with him after I came to my friend's apartment in tears and she wouldn't let me leave until I broke up with. Honestly, I'm not sure if I would have if she didn't and that thought still scares me.

Regardless, I went on to dating other people and it made me nervous to disclose this hobby with them. But when I did, I was pleasantly surprised. No one else viewed fanfiction like he did. Hell, some of them even thought it was cool and wanted to check out my blog!

This allowed me to realize something that, while it may not be true in every case, was in mine: if someone loves and trusts you, is secure in themselves and your relationship, there is no reason for them to feel threatened by you writing a 10k x reader fanfic.

Absolutely no reason at all.

And if they do feel threatened by a fanfic, well, you can bet that they'll be threatened by way more on top of all that and it could result in a relationship like the one I experienced.

It's why I now take it seriously whenever I tell a potential partner about my fanfiction to see what their reaction is.

Again, this may not apply to every case but this was my experience with it.

All in all, fanfic writers deserve people who support their love for fandoms and writing, they shouldn't be shamed and guilted by a partner to stop doing what they love and I think that's something that hopefully everyone can agree with.
