A Year in Review!

Well, this has... been a year, hasn’t it? A lot of ups, and a lot of downs, both to the wider world and personally. But, with that last digit moving on up, I’m gonna take a moment to look back on what this year meant for me, and what 2023 means moving forward!

First, well... Meet me! I haven’t been very active on this account until about half way through 2022, so anyone looking around knows pretty much nothing about me. Since I plan to be way more active this coming year, let me shed some light!

I’m Void, but I also like the name Coda, if you’re so inclined. I mostly go by She/Her, but I’m experimenting a bit with She/They, so either work for me. I’m aromantic asexual, and damn does that feel nice to say with confidence.

I draw all sorts of stuff, but I mostly dabble and practice in character and creature design. I love dragons, monsters and horror creatures, fantasy and D&D, Sci-fi and aliens, and writing and worldbuilding!

I’m not squeamish or over sensitive by any stretch, but too much of anything is a bummer, ain’t it? And while I’m not sex repulsed, please keep your kinks to yourself.

I drew quite a few things for personal projects that I never got to post (and I’m not quite allowed to yet), I do have some highlights to share!

This was actually one of the earliest pieces I drew this year, back in January. I posted it to Twitter, but not here on Tumblr.

Here’s a character design I made for a short horror game project for school during my Spring semester. I call him Old Mr. Smiler, and he just wants to keep a... close eye on you.

This here is Patches! I think if you go back far enough on this blog, an older version of him is back there somewhere. I made him with the idea of “What would I do if I made a children’s show?” So, Patches!

Smaugust, now that was a fun challenge! I know it took quite a while to finish it, but I’m glad I did. Here are my top 5 favorites from the batch in no particular order. I think I’d like to do it again this year, and hopefully get it done on time, maybe with a more specific secondary prompt list. This whole batch reminded my how much I loved dragons, they’re what got me into drawing. So, I think I’ll indulge much more this next year.

And finally, how could I leave out a representative from my Kirby art collection? My actual favorite pieces I’ve done I can’t show y’all yet, but I think the one that started it all is a good stand in. It’s been a fun character design exercise, taking a game with characters that are mostly just circles and making humanoid designs out of them. Also helped that I had a lot of Thoughts about the Kirby series, enough to form it into its own AU, that I’m having a blast writing.

So, what should you expect now that I’m looking to be more active this year? While I can’t promise much in the beginning, I’m graduating in May (hopefully), so we’ll see where things take me. I’m hoping to carve out much more regular time for myself this time around.

First, lets start with my fan content! I have a lot of fandoms and interest. To name a few, we have Kirby (of course), but also Undertale, the Owl House, Hades, Pokémon, Dungeons and Dragons, Good Omens, and Animal Crossing! I’m hoping to show my love of all of these series. Some might pop up more than others, but I’m hoping to show some more stuff off.

Of course I’ll be continuing to expand on the Kirby Incarnations AU. But did you know I have an Undertale AU? I’ve been drawing and writing for it for years now, just not posting it here much. I’ll be fixing that of course, look out for the Funny Things AU tag.

As much as I love fan work, I do have my own personal projects and characters I want to play with and explore. Writing and drawing bring me so much joy, and I hope to share that with everyone.

As a fun exercise, throughout the year, I’ll be trying to draw every card from the Major Arcana of the Tarot deck. Tarot has always fascinated me, so I’ll be essentially drawing my own deck. Maybe I’ll do an end of year reading, who knows? Expect those about twice a month (hopefully!!!!!!!).

I actually have a massive world building project I’d love to show my art and writing for. I have a fun character with a colorful life I’d love to explore with anyone who’s interested.

He’s a nerd, he’s a queer trans man, he’s traveled around his world, and he lives his midlife dream with his husband and twin daughters as a professor and staunch labor rights activist. What’s not to like?

I’ll probably set up an ask blog for that specifically, so keep an eye out for that announcement!

I’m actually a Game Development major in school, and I’ve been neck deep in my senior thesis (hence my disappearance since August). I’m the Creative Director for a team of 13, and we’re all working hard to complete a fun little stealth puzzle experience called Sintern! I’m hoping to share more details and the character concept art I made for it as it gets closer to completion. And, possibly, answer some questions about Game Development to anyone who wants my perspective.

I learned how to use Zbrush in the Fall semester.

It’s honestly been the most fun I’ve had in school in so long, and I think I’ve found my career passion. Likewise, I’m going to be practicing and developing my portfolio. I’ll share some process and glamor shots with y’all, from concept to completion!

Exactly what it sounds like. I want to improve my art, find my weaknesses, and address them! So, expect anatomy studies, object studies, background studies, color pallet experiments, all sorts of stuff!

I write stories too! I’m a Creative Writing minor, and I’m hoping to publish some stuff someday. So, if you see me drop a piece on the dashboard every once in a while, you know why. Speaking of....

I’m a writer. I’m an artist.

And there’s been a story I’ve wanted to tell for years. I think this will finally be the year I share some of it. What is it you may ask? Well....

You’ll just have to wait and see, my wandering eyes.

Owl House Season 2 Reviews!: Separate Tides

Hello all you happy witches! I’m Jake, and I review things reguarlly. You might of seen my reviews of Enchanted Grom Fright or Wing it LIke Witches. Wether you have or you haven’t i’m proud to welcome you to my blog. I review episodes of animated shows beat by beat, getting into the ins, outs and what have yous and ocassionaly I cover shows at they come out, having Covered all of Ducktales Season 3 and Amphibia Season 2, and since I slept on the second half of season 1, I’m now doing so for Owl House Season 2! Onto the part you actually care about: I enjoyed Owl House season 1 quite a bit. It had some issues sure: the subplots often felt disconnected from the main plot and overarching stories during the first half of the season and one or two episodes could’ve been cut, but for the most part it was genuinely excellent and gave us a fun, weird, macbre , well crafted world with likeable heroes voiced by great actors, great jokes and most notably a bisexual lead with a lesbian love intrest, something that would be notable on ANY show, especially for my bisexual self, but especially on Disney, where the most we get from them on a good day pride wise are minor gay characters that can be easily cut out, and half hearted tweets that are heavily mocked by one of the voice actors on this very show who you may of heard of.

This is the second time i’ve gotten to use those tweets and sadly it probably won’t be the last. I”d also say he makes Disney sound like some clown version of the hulk but Clown hulk was evne more rediculous than Disney’s blatant pandering.

Did I really need to include a picture of the hulk posing as a robotic clown juggling a seal, a horse and an elephant drawn by the one and only Jack Kirby?... yes I absolutely did.

Point is the show was damn impressive and I was eager to see what was in store. So yeah I did see the first episodes ahead of time as they were released early to select viewers as part of a charity stream for pride month. I just held off on the review because while most fans would’ve seen these eps by now, many were probably holding off for the airdate, and I wanted to be respectful.

So now we’re all caught up how does the opening salvo of season 2 stack up? Is it better or worse? Does it involve a loveable golden shithead and Hooty finally making a friend somehow and causing Blitzo to have an especaially chilly day? The answers are waiting for you inside, full recap/review with spoilers under the cut.

The season starts with a cold open: Luz, in her badass cape from the finale, where she confronts a myserious monster on a bounty poster.. who turns out to be using the light to make himself look bigger and thus the biggest problem Luz has with the guy is getting him out of king’s mouth like the little demon just found a piece of steak.

We then get the spiffy new credits.. which are spectacular. Seriously their gorgeous both showing off how far our heroes have come and how close they are now versus where they started, especailly Amity whose gone from “trying to look aloof” to confidently showing off her power with a wiry smile. Likewise the escalated stakes are shown off as the three portraits for the hexside crew have been replaced with Lilith, Kiki and Golden Guard, and the shot of King playing with his toys is replaced with Belos standing powerful.

What i’m most impressed by.. is that Dana got THIS much changed animation in. Western cartoons usually keep the same intro for a while and the most star vs got changed in season 2 was a frame. Ducktales also somehow remained mostly the same minus a few subsittions (Such as swapping in gizmoduck for littlebulb, adding Della to teh shot of launchpad, and adding Della to the credits period). So while it’s not 100% new, the shot at the end and the race with the monster thing are both kept, it’s still almost entirely new stuff and while it’ll likely last into season 3, it dosen’t make it any less impressive Dana got this. Not the most impressive thing she’s gotten away with but given the most impressive thing is “letting her have a bi lead on a network that at most let a character have a gay friend in the past”, it’s understandable.

So with that we get into the meat of the episode as Luz vlog’s to her mom. Given she probably can’t send the message it feels more like a way to try ane perk herself up as well as fill in new members of the audience. It’s very clear from this scene and especially the next after it things AREN’T okay: We see Eda still trying to use her powers and while it turns out she has a scrap of magic left, i’ts not enough to actually do anything. Lilith is coping badly with the sheer weight of her actions against her sister and her fall from grace in the public eye, and the house has a whole has to now bounty hunt to scrape out some money. Theirs still SOME hope for Luz getting home at least as she has the key to the door, but otherwise despite her best efforts to say otherwise and stay positive it’s clear the reality is a lot more yikes than sh’ed like to admit.

Things aren’t better when they go into town as our heroes get smacked in the face with how much worse off they are: the Emperor, like any pety dictator, has cracked down hard in the face of resistance, putting up more emperor's coven sponsored stalls in the marketplace. It also shows that as breifly lived and kinda sudden the people turning against Belos and for Eda in season 1 was it’s had some nice lasting consequences: Belos is clearly just a tad rattled the people turned against him and is taking steps to make sure that NEVER happens again by cranking up his authority as much as he can without making them turn against him harder. After all if he comes down TOO hard on them, it’ll just make them rebel more. But if he say simply adds a few more stalls and some more propoganda, no one’s going to protest... and more importantly they’ll be too afraid to.

It helps thoguh that his main opposition has taken a PR Hit. Eda barely gets any money for her cart of bounties as the asshole at the cart and everyone around knows she lost her powers. Lilith has also, to her horror, been swiftly replaced by the new kid in town: Golden Guard, aka the mysterious teen we saw at the end of last season and in the opener. Belos has likely done this for two reasons: because he needed a new mouth of sauron to spread his bullshit the public would love to replace the liked and respected Lilith.. and because he likely knew Lilith didn’t like GG that much and promoting him in her place would piss him off. GG is a magical progidy, and despite only being 16 according to word of god he’s already high up.

So yeah our heroes aren’t in a great place and Eda shoots down Luz’ suggestoin of taking on a Selkiedama, a rare sea creature with a massive bounty. But with her mentor and new ally both having taken a hit to the self esteem pancreas, it’s Luz’ turn as she overhears Eda talking to lilith.. and finds out Eda’s not eating. She can’t get any apple blood because she needs to spend what she can food wise on Luz, as there’s not much Luz can healthily process out here. It’s a sad and often far too often real circumstance: a parent forced to not eat or barely eat so their child can.

This honestly reminds me of Steven Universe in the best way. Like Steven for Luz while this wasn’t a game, as shown by both’s hard work and dedication towards becoming a crystal gem and a witch respectively, it was still a fun adventure like something out of a fantasy novel. Sure there was danger and the constant threat of Eda getting caught and her curse acting up.. but both were manageable. Eda was so unstoppably powerful only Belos could challenge her and with him unwilling or unable to leave his castle to go fight her, there was no one who could stand a resonable threat. The Most Luz had to deal with was interpersonal stuff and by the time of the two part season 1 finale most of that was settled: Amity had gone from hating her due to a series of misunderstandings to having a massive crush on her, Willow had gained confidence, Gus was.. gus (He might just need a touch more focus this season just saying), and the one threat at school in Boscha had been taken down too many pegs to matter anymore. By the time of the finale Luz had gained magic, friends, love, and confidence. She had everything except how to tell her mom about all this really.

The finale.. sent all that crashing down. It showed just how precarious everything outside her friend group was: the curse finally overwhelmed eda, Lilith sunk to her lowest to mamke it happen, and Belos very nearly won. While Luz proved capable fighting various mooks and still ultimately won the day out, her fight with Belos showed how ultimately out classed she was. This went from a fun magical adventure to a genuine battle for freedom and for the very soul of the boilling isles.. and one Luz is now throughly aware she’s badly outmatched in.

To make matters worse her own choices left them in no shape to fight said battle: Luz’s decision to try and cure Eda with the hat lead to her capture and Eda going full owl, and while it was partly Eda’s own decision to destroy the door, it was Luz who ultimately had to push that button and did so on the boiling isles side of it, trapping her here possibly forever. While Luz made an udnerstandable decision in the first case and the right one in the second, they still had conseqeunces: lilith had to give up her own magic and take on part of the curse to get Eda back.. and eda was left with no magic, no income and no clue how to move forward. Before doing the right thing either lead to some wild shenanignas that ultimately turned out fine or lead to good things.. now Luz is seeing sometimes being a hero means that even when you did everything for the right reasons or did everything you SHOULD have done.. it still costs you. She’s now stuck here making Eda’s life visably harder, not that Eda cares.

I genuinely love this: it adds depth and weight to things: while Luz can still HAVE fun one off adventures, her adventures have now left a mark and while she still has her loveable optimsim i’ts slowly slipping.. it breaks this episode as we’ll see and while i’ts restored by the end of the same, i’ts very clear she won’t make it out of this the same person she came in.

So while Luz and King sale the seven seas, Lilith tries to put her mind at ease kicking off her subplot.. which i’m covering in full now because they don’t intersect at all till the last scene. So Lilith is not taking loosing everything well and instead is just having a mope sesh. Eda walks buy with a bandolier of potions like she’s some magical version of Cable... side note whoever writes the next cable ongoing, consider that will you? That’d be dope. Eda’s apparently realized there’s ANOTHER avenue for her powers: potions. They don’t require magic, so she can just sell some minor ones off.

Lilith, wanting to both prove her sister and Belos wrong while also GENUINELY wanting to make up for how shitty her behavior was, decides she too can make a potion, a scrying potion into the palace. With Eda still a fugitive it would be handy to have a peak into Belos castle.

But getting the ingredients proves harder than expected as Lilith can’t accept she’s just not as powerful as she was or that she actually needs help now. Help comes in the form of Hooty.

No seriously he is an actual help... coming to genuinely help Lilith because he assumes their friends. Granted he assumes he’s everyones friend when really out of those he’s met outside of those random mooks King actively despises him, Eda is constantly annoyed with him, Luz is the same but tries to be ncier about it, Willow and Gus are terrified of him and Amity tried to murder him. Granted ALL of that minus king is warranted: he tries way too hard with everyone so he ends up pissing them off or creeping them out.

Lilith only tolerates him because he is mildly useful and clearly won’t go away aka the reason everyone does. But her reason for rejcting his help, later screaming in his face to go away, is personal: Lilith wants to prove she can be self sufficent. To prove she can do this herself. In hindsight.. that’s always been there. She doggedly insited on trying ot cure Eda her way. Said apparently cure involved someone else sure but it was someone stronger who Lilith trusted over anyone else, even Eda. Lilith lost EVERYTHING making things right with Eda and is just depsperate to prove she can still be useful, that she isn’t outmoded without the coven or everything she dedicated her entire life to.

But Lilith learns the hard way that you really can’t do everything yourself and ends up annoying a colony of flaming bees.. or was it fire hornets.. I don’t know the point is they create fire and they sting people I think semantics aren’t necessary here. Lilith ends up surrounded and admits she needs help from hooty.. who gladly comes back, saves her ass and takes her yelling in stride, it’s what friends do. And it’s what Lilith needed: to see she dosen’t HAVE to do this alone and prove herself. What she was is gone but she can still be something new. And in the process Hooty FINALLY makes an actual friend, not by trying to force himself into their life or jabbing them in the eye while annoying them after they specifically said if he annoys them again they’ll kill him, but simply by doing something nice and being genuinely friendly. Both got what htey needed: lilith needed some support from someone she hadn’t horribly wronged and thus dosen’t have a complciated relatoinship with, and Hooty needed a friend. Awwww. they also got the ingredients for the potion so we’ll see how that panned out after the main plot.

Back a few hours and aboard a ship, Luz hops aboard, embracing the pirate’s life .. well a pirate’s outfit even though she’s a sailor. Look you can only wear a pirate outfit in about ten ways that are socially acceptable, I can’t blame her for getting after it. For the record those settings are: 1) A Pirate’s funeral 2) Halloween 3) A Funeral At Halloween 4) In honor of Stefan Karl Steffanson who played Robbie Rotten, either his birthday or his death day. Or just in general. I miss you man. 5) To kick Johnny Depp in the Nutsack 6) To drink Rum 7) To Pirate Media over the internet 8) At your Pop Pop’s funeral 9) As a sailor 10) To reinact Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy’s Kong Quest

IT’s sad getting older is what i’m saying so if they want to dress like pirates they can. Oh and for added irony the vessel is working for the emperor and GG is on board. Oops. Luz is unaware though and successful wins over the sailors by scraping barnacles using king’s horn, swabbing the deck and doing a jig as all pirates or sailors do, to a traditoinal she shanty.

Okay sadly not but come on Disney, you can afford “Lean On Me” and “All I Do Is Win” but not this?

Anyways King decides to go looking for crackers and instead finds a message with the emperor’s sigil.. and the golden guard who quickly grabs him.

But while our heroes prepare to follow the Selkiedama to it’s lair, they instead get a shock when a mystery pirate grabs their pay.. which the emperor decided was a good idea to keep on board with a crew that could steal it at any time, in a raging sea where it could be lost at any time, and with a crew going after a sea beast that could capsize the thing in an instant.

Luz and mystery pirate scuffle over the loot.. only for the Loot to get lost in the sea. As for the pirate it’s naturally Eda, which did genuinely floor me on first watch. Season 1 had the two off doing unrealted stuff as often as it had their plots intersect or had both in the same plot, if not more, so I figured Eda was going to show up in Lilith’s plot instead, or at the very least at the end of this plot. Not smack in the middle. Luz learns two things from Eda: one that the Selkiedama is actually peaceful as long as you don’t piss it off and that’s the REAL reason she didn’t take the job rather than not wanting to risk Luz, and two, this is an emperial ship.

The two argue for a second before the real threat arrives: We finally PROPERLY meet the Golden Guard. GG is played by Zeno Robinson, who is now double dipping Disney Show wise as he’s currently Remy on Big City Greens. He’s also the Green Poncho on Craig of the Creek, a storyline I really need to catch up on.. and a show I need to catch up on in general. Point is he’s awesome at what he does and also has the best twitter handle i’ve ever seen.

I also did not know before pointing out his twitter handle he also added the golden guard name to his name but clearly is VERY proud to be part of this series and rightfully so.

He’s an utter treat in this role too as the Guard is awesome from second one. He starts putting on the offical airs planning to arrest Eda and force Luz to continue sailing for money and easily curbstomps both. Eda is a bit more understandable as while she apparently can fight hand to hand, she’s far more used to either using her staff or her magic. Luz though we saw curbstomp a good chunk of the emperoror’s soldiers and scratch Belos. She didn’t remotely stand a CHANCE against Belos, but still the fact she was able to do anything to the strongest witch on the island is an achivment. GG just easily rolls her over.

We then get his REAL game: he’ll let both off free if they kill the selkiedama for him> He doesn't even know WHY the emperor wants him dead... he’s just following orders and clearly respects the man as much as Lilith did. It also gives me the feeling he’s been doing black ops style stuff for the emperor, stuff the Emperor couldn’t risk with Lilith as if she had to do some attrocites that werne’t business as usual, she might get suspcious and belivie lilith. His loyal possible son though? Someone he probably at least partially raised? GG will gladly do whatever the emperor asks with a smirk. Well presumibly. That is not an expressive mask. Is damn cool.

So after the two resist he simply gets a bit flustered/ annoyed and just pulls out his trump card: King, who acts like a scared dog and says he’ll kill this bird if they don’t do what he asks. Also he somehow thinks king is a bird... as @jess-the-vampire put it when we talked about the episode he’s either never seen a bird in his life or was just mocking them. Me I like to think of him like Jeb from scott the woz, just replace Gex with Birds.

Golden Guard: What about last week? \ Belos: That was a car wash.

Anyways with no other options Luz commits to doing a murder and Eda heads after her. Eda finally confronts Luz on why this is so important and we get easily the best part of this episode that dosen’t involve everyone’s faviorite golden little shit. Luz opens up that she heard all of that, and while Eda tries to deflect it with a freaks stay together Luz snaps at her her that doing so has only gotten her hurt. This is where that point I mentioned about things sinking in and the stakes being way higher comes in: Luz feels like being in Eda’s life has COST EDA TOO MUCH. The petrifcation, the loss of her powers, having to scrimp to feed only one of them... it’s just too much. Luz dosen’t want to keep runing her life.

But as Eda explains in her own way... Luz made her life BETTER. She made Eda want to be a better person, made her try harder to be one. Luz being around makes her better so no matter what has happened or what she’s lost to keep the kid... Eda will NEVER regret the gains. She gained a daughter, and that’s more than enough. It’s what Luz really failed to realize: sacrificing for someone you love isn’t a burden. It was Eda’s choice. Eda could’ve barely fed both of them. but she choose making sure luz got something she could digest and could thrive. And when you look back a lot of the choices were Eda’s: eda choose to keep using her powers to save Luz knowing what woudl happen, choose to hide the condition in the first place, choose to hide how bad it was and WANTED Luz to destroy the door over hre own saftey. Eda has always put Luz over herself like any good parent would and it took Eda just outright saying that for Luz to realize it: that no matter how bad thigns are.. they aren’t worth what they’ve gained. Luz isn’t protective of Luz because she thinks less of her.. she’s protective because this is her kid and she’ll do anything for her.

Still Eda has no intention to let Luz murder an innocent creature either and they come up with a plan, puttnig on a shadow play that makes it look like they killed the selkie dama using light magic. GG ... geninely keeps up his end of the bargin. Sure he leaves them stranded, but even that’s not too bad when you think about it: Luz can use ice magic, he likely knew that before even fighting her. While it won’t be an EASY voyage home, he knows she can manage it. He then warns luz to try and stay out of trouble for her own saftey. It shows beneath the mask of being the emperor’s servant he’s a decent kid who genuinely thinks he’s doing the right thing: He’s what Eda COULD’VE been in his shoes, someone with all the power and convidence.. but unlike Eda the exact wrong person telling them what to do. He’s also a massive loveable dork, lifting up King’s curtain over and over again just to see him scurry around panicked and best of all popping a FUCKING WHEELIE and going BYEEEEEEE. i just.. I have no words. It’s perfections. I already loved this kid for popping a witch wheelie but then he goes and added BYEEEEEEEEE to it. Beautiful. Can’t wait for more.

So after going to Eda, who pulled off her first glyps in the process, and confirming the selkies are all alive the selkie barfs up a fat lump. HIS NAME’S GENE! that turns out to be selkiegris which like Ambergris is worth a LOT. So our heroes are fincially secure and playfully roll around in the barf. I love a job that allows me to say things like that.

So wrap up: our heroes head back home, now secure, Lilith shows off her potion which our heroes aren’t sure what to do with and as they prepare to drawn on hooty, with Lilith promising to protect her bestie... we get a bit deeper into the castle and find BELOS HAS REPAIRED THE DOOR. “knock knock, human”

Final Thoughts: Seperate Tides is an EXCELLENT opener. it greatly strengthen’s luz’s character, introduces a great new threat and wonderfully expands on the fallout from the finale while helping deepen lilith and givng her her own weird animal sidekick in Hooty, a friendship I never expected but sure as shit love. It also greatly improves on the subplots of season 1, with this one being unrelated but still help forwarding plots and characters. While I didn’t hate most of season 1′s subplots, a good chunk were just irrelvant hyjinks with eda and/or king that made them feel like side characters in their own damn show. Hopefully the trend keeps up> This is an impressive opener and I hope the season keeps up this level of quality

Tumblr’s Top Fandoms of 2020

It’s been a weird and often devastating year, and our social media has reflected that. Tumblr has just released its top fandoms of 2020 and it’s fascinating to see how a year of pandemic and quarantine has affected transformative fandom and broader cultural trends. In a year when almost everyone spent a lot more time at home, Animal Crossing: New Horizons was the most blogged about topic on the social media platform, followed by animated dramedy Steven Universe, Belgian SKAM adaptation WtFOCK, K-pop supergroup BTS, and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. We talked to Tumblr’s Trend Expert Amanda Brennan about how she interpreted the biggest trends of the year, how this was a big year for animation and international media, and why 2020 was the year everyone stopped worrying about what was cool and just embraced what they love. And, now, our chat with Brennan. (This Q&A has been edited for clarity and length.)

Den of Geek: I’ve heard you refer to the users as the Tumblr hive-mind or the orchid, whatever it is. I was just hoping you could generally talk about what the Tumblr hive-mind is to you? Which is the way of saying, who uses Tumblr generally? And how and why? If you can even extrapolate those things. Go!

Amanda Brennan: Most of our audiences is Gen Z; it’s at 48%. Our new user registration with Gen Z is even higher; I’m pretty sure it’s 60%. These are people who come to Tumblr because they love something so much they just want to share that love with people who love it as much as they do. I know that feels like a giant umbrella, but that’s the thing: Tumblr is what you make of it. If you love sports, sports Tumblr is intense hockey Tumblr, so good. If you love TV, you’ll have all of that. K-pop Tumblr, totally amazing. Furby Tumblr is off the hook and they make these incredible creations. I’ve recently gotten into Stained Glass Tumblr.

There’s layers upon layers. No matter what you love, there’s something on Tumblr for you. That’s both the easiest thing and the hardest thing about it. You have to go in being like, “Alright, I’m so into this thing, what does Tumblr have for me?” It’s not like the other social media networks, right? It’s really about what you love rather than who you know.

Yeah, I like that. I did want to ask you specifically about the process of how you track trends and how you make decisions about what to track?

We built the whole taxonomy that powers fandom metrics based on what Tumblr talks about. I’m a librarian, as you know, and I kind of reverse engineered it. My first year in review at Tumblr in 2013, they handed me a spreadsheet and they’re like, ‘OK, go to town.” So I was like, “Cool, let me pull out the threads that I see.” We really let the data tell us how to analyze it, if that makes sense. So when it comes to what we track, I have a running notebook that I’ve kept all year of the things that I’ve wanted to have in year in review.

The Witcher has been on my list since it came out. Animal Crossing has been another one. The Old Guard had a huge moment. I was just writing notes, like, “Oh, what is this thing? And we’ll keep an eye on it.” I have an amazing team. We all are into our own pieces of Tumblr. So we’ll all work together to just keep an eye on different fandoms. I don’t know if you know about Minecraft YouTuber fandom?

Yeah. I was actually listening to the latest Fansplaining last night and they mentioned it in that. I was just like, “OK, a new thing.” There’s always a new thing to learn about.

There’s always a new thing. That’s the beauty of Tumblr. It’s so fluid in fandom. You can go from one fandom to another and then you’ll see like, “Ooh, what is this thing?” I’ve got Supernatural on the brain, as who in the fandom doesn’t right now. [This interview was recorded on the day of the Supernatual series finale.] I was telling someone, the whole reason I got into Supernatural was because I saw a gif from the show on Tumblr and I was like, “What is happening? Let me go back and watch this entire series.” That’s the vibe of Tumblr, right? You see a thing and you’re like, “Oh, I need to know everything about that.”

Hmm. Yeah, for sure. I was interested in talking to you or getting your insight into how trends you saw or data you saw that were maybe tied to the very unique experience of being in the middle of a pandemic.

Yeah. I was looking back at the predictions that I had made last year and like four of those things didn’t even come out. It was just so unexpected. There’s two things that we really saw tied to the pandemic. The first was “cottagecore” as an aesthetic. It kind of touched everything because it’s soothing, it feels comfortable. In March and April in the early days, when you didn’t know what to do, you’re stuck in a forest isolation. Cottagecore has got this vibe of chosen isolation. It was very fantasy-driven and something to reach out for.

That evolved also into nostalgia. I think this year’s really big theme is nostalgia and comfort. We saw huge returns to fandoms like Twilight and Avatar: The Last Airbender. Avatar going on Netflix was such a world-breaking moment. Not only did it introduce a new, younger fandom to the show, there’s a lot of Avatar content once you get into it, but it brought people back to a younger time in their lives. Remembering and rewatching. The Avatar fandom, as you see, it’s all over all of the lists. Zuko is number 20 on all of the things on Tumblr this year. Avatar was able to redefine people’s year. Because you know what, we’re all at home, I’m going to binge Avatar. Reignite my love for this fandom.

A lot of TV too, because TV is episodic, you get lost in it. Movies had a really rough year. When we look at the movies, movies like Megamind were trending this year. That comfort movie that you go back and watch 17 times.

Yeah. I was curious about that too. The balance or proportions between older fandoms and newer fandoms, like the Avatar example. I was curious how much that changed this year? How much you thought it was tied to the pandemic? How much is tied to accessibility and things, like Avatar coming to Netflix? Do you think that is an interest in older fandoms? Or that it’s going to continue past the pandemic?

Yeah. I think another high-level theme of this year is the rejection of cringe culture. I’m getting a little ahead of myself, but I’ll tie it all back in. I think people are realizing what their values are and not being afraid to admit that they like a thing. Not caring what other people think of the things they like. Unabashedly loving the things they love. That’s why I think we do see a resurgence in these older fandoms.

Because people who may have loved them their whole lives, or may have been nervous to share that they liked it when they were younger they’re not afraid anymore. They’re like, “You know what? Twilight, it’s not that great, but I love it. This is my emotional support vampire.” Recognizing that you can be critical of something. You can see where its flaws are, but you can still love it. That duality of fandom is something that is going to persist into next year. That freedom to just like a thing, because you like it. Be able to see its flaws, but still be like, “You know what? Overall, this brings me joy and the world is melting down.”

I’m on board with that mission, that plan for 2021. I did want to ask about the role of non-English language media, especially live action stuff. Generally because I was someone who fell into The Untamed this year, but I saw that there were two SKAM remakes as well that are on the top 10. In general, have you seen over your time at Tumblr, and maybe especially in the past few years, an increase in non-English language content? Do you think that is mostly English speakers and Americans being more open to that or being able to find it easier? Or do you think it’s also an influx of people from outside the United States coming to Tumblr? Or both?

Interesting. The data that we work with is actually stripped of all user information. I don’t really have an insight into where these people are coming from. I do think that users in general are more open to content in any language. Tumblr is more interested in characters than where the story comes from. Thinking about The Untamed, it’s just such a compelling story, it doesn’t matter if you have to read subtitles.

To parallel it to something in major pop culture, Parasite. People are becoming more open to just watching content because it’s good. SKAM is really fascinating to me because the number one live action show is wtFOCK. Then, I think two years ago, 2018, the original SKAM was number one at some point. This show really transcends language barriers. It transcends geographical barriers. At the core, the story of the teenagers is just so relatable to anyone. We’ve seen lots of translation happening and not just into English. Translation of SKAM into other languages, just because people want more of these characters and their iterations, no matter what locale they’re based in. I’m waiting for some professor to have a class on it, because it’s so fascinating to me.

I also wanted to ask about how you thought the election cycle affected Tumblr this year, if there were any trends or data that you were like, “Yes, of course this is what people were doing on Tumblr this year.”

Tumblr has always had this backbone of social justice. This year, it came out stronger and in more force. No matter what fandom you were in or interests, everyone I know on Tumblr was participating in sharing social justice stuff. Even politics, if they weren’t from the US, those kinds of memes that were like, “I feel for you”. The way that fandoms do. I see your show is ending and I’m sorry.

The one thing that Tumblr really had leading up to the election was such an appreciation for the postal service. Especially Gen Z, their world is so much larger due to digital connection. Mail order, just as well as sending letters and keeping in touch with your digital friends is just as important as keeping in touch with your IRL friends. All of the artists on Tumblr, so many of them turn to mail order to replace cons. This is their livelihood. By the time the fall hit and the postal service was having all these issues, people are ready to jump in. There were the Transformers dressed like mail people.

There were all these comments like “support your postal workers,” “support the USPS.” It really boils down to the fact that we are all connected and the mail service is something in the US that connects everyone. Even overseas. Supporting these artists whose livelihood went from IRL to online and having to deal with all of this.

And the “Super Putin Election.” The confluence of those elements. I was just surfing on my personal computer and I was on Tumblr and I saw a post being like “Destiel’s canon.” I’m like, “Excuse me?” I immediately texted my team. I was like, “Open up your work computers, let’s go.”

It’s time.

We all signed on trying to figure out what’s going on and watching the numbers. That, to me, is thrilling. I said this to someone else, but it felt like the night of The Dress. To have that moment where everyone on the internet is feeling the energy. The things that kept getting layered on top of it. Putin and Sherlock and all the anime mysteries. It was breakneck speed, and it was really thrilling just to be in that moment, and so Tumblr.

I did want to ask you about an increase in animated fandom and potentially anime fandom. A lot of these things I’m anecdotally or just observing things in my own little corner of the internet. It just seems like animation and anime, probably at least partially because Netflix has accumulated a much larger anime collection and seems to be investing in these sorts of things. Have you seen that increase? Could you talk about it, if so?

It plays into what we were talking about earlier, twofold. That nostalgia vibe, the late nineties anime vibe, that art style. Also your comfort zone and being open to more stuff just because it’s good. Not worrying about reading subtitles and stuff like that. But anime in general had a huge year. Haikyū!! ending also transposed into other fandoms because that moment of the final panels, it brings people together. People being so excited to see this massive thing come to a close. You might not be familiar with Haikyū!! in general, but you’ll see the fanart and be like, “Oh, I feel that.” It’s the emotion of it.

The popularity of Avatar did also open people’s doors to like, “Oh, well, what else can I watch? What else do I want to learn about”? Boku No Hero was consistently on our Week In Review every week. BEASTARS is another Netflix anime that’s at the top. Then Mo Dao Zu Shi, thinking about The Untamed, the story of Mo Dao Zu Shi is so fascinating. I don’t think I can name another piece of content that has that storyline. People are just ready to take it all on.

I did want to ask you, I think you’ve probably talked about some of these already, but what were some of the biggest fandom moments for you on Tumblr this year?

Oh boy. So many things going canon. Catradora was a huge, huge moment. I cried watching that. The Witcher, Jaskier, introducing this whole new world to Henry Cavill. I saw a post yesterday that was like once Superman was goth, a lot more people realize that he’s hot. Repurposing and looking at things in a new way. Among Us, so huge. There is a user who is doing a comic about White and Pink being in love. She’s giving them lore. She’s giving them backstory, personalities. It is amazing.

Unus Annus, I am not very into streamers, but I’ve caught some of those videos. When they had their final stream, I was tuning in. I was like, “Are you really going to delete the channel?” Then they did. Just watching the fans have that moment, even though I am not in that fandom, it was wonderful so meaningful.

Harry Potter being taken by the fans. Fans own Harry Potter now, and that’s what matters. The Old Guard also came out of nowhere and really blew Tumblr away. The Immortal Husbands. I love that ship. I’ve got to touch on almost all of the places, MCR, My Chemical Romance. Those fans have woken up and they didn’t get their tour, but they will. They’re not going to sleep until they do.

Because we maybe all have Supernatural on the brain, to a certain extent. I’m just curious how you think, that show’s been on for 15 years. The fandom has gone through literal generations. How do you think the fandom is going to change?

There’s always going to be a supernatural gif for everything. People will continue gifing it. It’s going to surpass what it is and it’s going to become that comfort show. This is a personal anecdote, but when I go to the dentist, every single time supernatural is on. It’s just like, “Oh, I get to watch my boys while I’m getting my teeth cleaned. That’s good.” It’s always going to be there. It’s always going to be there for people when they need it the most. We’re going to see a lot more fan creations. People love these boys, men now they’re adults. People love these characters. I haven’t watched this season. I am going to watch the finale tonight. I’m going in almost cold. I know that a lot of fan favorites have returned. My prediction for Supernatural fandom going forward is seeing these side stories come through in fanfiction even more than they already do. Lots more Charlie. That’s personal of mine because I love her.

Yeah. Who doesn’t love Charlie? Seeing these smaller characters come out and just shine in their own fan works, more so than the world might’ve provided them in canon.

It feels dangerous to make fandom predictions based on what happened this year, but if you have any predictions and or hopes for the coming year in terms of Tumblr and fandom?

Where we’re at now and going forward, it’s all about true authenticity. Screw what people think. We’re rejecting our old ways of thinking. We’re about flipping perspectives and forgetting what you thought was important in exchange for what you truly love. 2020 has helped us all figure out what our values at our core are. It’s about choosing something that makes you happy, that supports you, and your people. Choosing the happiness of those around you and making sure that you’re fighting for the goodness in life. Which sounds really sugar sweet, but one of the things, again, that I love about Tumblr is it is about putting people first based on the things they love. That’s what I see happening.

A Moment into Forever

Summary: A friend and an adopted brother join hands in marriage in early July, and Mari couldn’t be any prouder of the two.

Morning arrives at the Tan residence one July Sunday, there is so much activity to get the last minute things done: from setting up the backyard for the reception to getting some of the food cooked to the bridal party needing to get ready for the big day. The ladies (Issa the bride and bridesmaids Mari, Kairi, Hermione, and Issa’s old friend Mona Roque) had their makeup and hair done by some friends led by Michiru Kaio in the master bedroom on the ground floor while the guys (Harry the groom and the groomsmen Ahkmenrah, Kirby, Ron, and Issa’s old friend Samuel Hidalgo) got ready inside in what will be Harry’s former room with Kirby on the second floor (the couple would move into the master bedroom after their brief mini-honeymoon out of town). There are exchanges of encouragement and stories and a bit of shenanigans here & there, but it went all smoothly.

After everyone got ready and got dressed, Mari and Kairi escorted Issa out to the porch at the now mostly decorated backyard of the house for the first look and bridal party photo shoot. The girls, the bride wearing an ivory spaghetti strap blouse, a long blush tulle skirt, and black chunky heels, whereas the two bridesmaids (along with Mona and Hermione) are dressed in embroidered blush dresses, chatted for a bit about what is going to happen. Her hands are tightening their grip onto her pink and white floral bouquet out of nervousness, although her face didn’t show that much at all with her trying to remain calm before the first look and bridal party shoots.

“So, today is finally here,” Mari spoke up first, “The day you two are getting married.”

“Absolutely, sis,” Kairi smiled before turning her attention to Issa, “Harry is so going to be floored once he gets down here to see you. I mean, we managed to hide your outfit for a couple of weeks without him catching onto it yet. He’s usually the one who couldn’t his nose away from any secretive stuff.”

“Gee, thanks guys, we all need it,” the slightly nervous bride thanked her soon-to-be sisters in law, “Come to think of it though: I’m just as surprised as you two that we hid it so well, he didn’t even bother to ask us.”

“Not a problem,” Mari noted, “I guess we did it so well indeed.”

“I can’t wait to see his reactions to you in a top and skirt rather than a dress,” Kairi giggled at the thought of her older adopted brother having dropped jaws upon seeing his future wife in a different outfit than he had imagined from the white lies they have given onto him for the last couple of weeks.

“Well, dream harder, Kairi,” Issa rolled her eyes a bit with a shrug, “I’m placing bets that he’s going to wear his eyeglasses all day long and forgetting to fix his hair for today.”

“Quick, everyone, the groom’s coming!!!” Mona’s panicky voice soon alerted everyone that Harry’s about to go to the backyard porch, sending everyone to hide from his line of sight.

“We need to go before he catches us,” Mari told Issa as she and Kairi went back inside to the master bedroom.

“Or else,” Kairi chimed in.

“Okay, girls, just don’t heckle at him on your way out,” she reminded them in advance.

Both girls nodded as they went back inside, leaving Issa alone to have some peace and quiet before he shows up. Good Lord, it’s been nearly a decade when they first met? Nearly a decade of dating has come by and it was so surreal to think that it would lead to this moment.

The memories were coming back to her in flashbacks in a film: the first awkward meeting, Harry’s major heartbreak from breaking up with Ginny and disowning his canon realm, the first awkward date, bonding over their hatred for tight enclosed spaces, the upset that she has to go college and get a job at the newspaper company they work for ahead of him, countless times of flirting with each other, a couple of times they would argue and yet make it up afterwards, the multiple dates and trips together, the many sleepless nights working on articles and races against the deadlines, that little engagement surprise at Ron and Hermione’s wedding a few months back. It must have taken a few minutes to go over them, but it felt like an eternity for her.

Just as memory lane keeps running in her mind, a familiar English male voice soon woke her up from its trance, “Hey, I thought about of dropping by before the whole thing starts. Just to, you know, not to get so tense about the day ahead of time.” Issa turned around and she was quite happy to see that he was there: the man she’s going to tie the knot with, the brother of two of her dearest friends. Harry James Potter looks absolutely dashing on today: his bangs have slicked back with gel, he managed to sneak in contact lenses (again, but he’s getting better at wearing them in a near daily basis nowadays), the scar has been partially concealed with a little bit of concealer, and this is so un-Harry-like as if the guy was trying too hard to look good for her. But still handsome nonetheless.

And like the rest of the guys who’s not Kirby, he’s wearing an ivory white dress shirt, gray dress pants, and brown shoes, finished with a layered owl feather and gold-tone wiring buttonhole. Unlike the rest of guys though, he does have a suit jacket on that matches the pants in color & fabric where the buttonhole is attached onto and a blush tie that compliments her skirt.

She was totally floored by the whole look he has pulled off, and she couldn’t help but to blush hard behind her hand. Harry, on the other hand, was stunned by how lovely Issa is as well: to be honest, he was expecting her to wear something more white and in a form of a dress if you asked him beforehand, but the top and skirt combo is quite a welcoming refresher from the amount of white dresses he has seen on brides in many of the weddings he, Issa, Mari, Kairi, and, yes, even Kirby have went to in recent years.

Her hair has been styled into a messy bun with braids, the makeup was done well for even amateur standards (thanks in part of Michiru’s clever skilled hand), he could even sworn that he could sniff some of the perfume she usually has on, but beyond that, it probably has to do with the sweet elegant aura and grace she always gives off that makes her unorthodox bridal outfit more stunning in his eyes in a good way.

“I see that you decided not to give up on the old locket for the big day as well,” he admitted to her when he noticed that the silver heart locket necklace she usually wears being a stand out from the other pieces of jewelry that are in gold before solemnly pondering on the significance, “Perhaps your cousin would’ve love to be here to see this day happening if she was still here on Earth.”

“Yeah, I wish Serena was here to see us getting married,” she smiled back while holding back the tears with the mention of her late beloved cousin bringing back old memories before bringing up another thing near and dear to his heart, “She was unfortunately ill for most of her life, I afraid. I guess the same can be said for Uncle Sirius and your parents if they weren’t, you know, killed off too soon, right?”

“Same, same,” he agreed as he too tried not to shed so much tears before the ceremony could even begin.

As the two were finishing up on the remembering the dead, they soon got distracted when they overheard giggling and cheering from their friends and family: including the bride’s parents and relatives coming in from the Philippines and the entire fam bunch & circle of friends with a co-worker of theirs taking the pictures as discreetly as possible. Issa’s dear old best friend Jenny and her feline detective husband Snooper are also present along with their respective families and with some new family members, including a pair of genius tech prodigy brothers and a friendly bear & his bird lady friend.

What surprised the groom the most was that some of the people he knew did actually travel from the UK to Daly City via San Francisco. He was surely expecting that many from his neck of the woods not to come besides Ron & Hermione who arrived a few weeks ago to help out in the last stages of planning and Sayeko, Levi, Erwin, Mike, Zoe, and Levi’s father Roland who had agreed to come to the event, even especially with Ginny understandably choosing not to go not as to rub things between them on the wrong way, but seeing Remus, Tonks, and Teddy being at the house before heading for the ceremony is more than welcome. The last living Marauder gave Harry a warm hug, Tonks kindly gave him a few words, and Teddy happily proclaimed to everyone present that Issa will become his godmother upon marrying his godfather, which actually everyone giggling and laughing at the coincidence.

And the most surprising of them all was that his biological cousin Dudley Dursley of all people arrived from his current place at Manchester, England to California out from Mari’s invitation and Luna was there as well. He’s well aware that he and Dudley have made amends and still sending correspondence over mail and calls & that these two are dating each other for some time, but the fact that both of them are here in one sitting has flooded him with gratitude that he hugged Mari tightly out of happiness Dudley even admitted he was worried about coming to the wedding in the first place out of fear, but Harry does appreciate the effort he and Luna made to come over nevertheless.

After the bridal party and family pictures have been taken at the backyard, everyone headed out to the San Francisco Botanical Gardens and into its Zellerbach Garden of Perennials for the ceremony. The garden within a city park is already filled with a diversity array of plants and flowers from around the world that wasn’t necessary to decorate the whole place like crazy (and also to comply with state & city forests and parks rules), but there’s a small ceremony table under the gazebo shade and a God’s Knot set with three differently colored ropes hanging onto a small ring which in turn is hanging onto a wooden peg. There’s also a park ranger on hand as accordance to the rules. Because both fathers on both sides have leg injuries, both sets of parents choose to sit down before the ceremony begins.

After some moments of quiet talk and waiting, the ceremony begins: the first one to walk down to the gazebo was the Doctor, dressed in black & white and carrying what appears to be a rolled up scroll of psychic paper, then next came Harry trying to not worry so much as he headed for the gazebo on his own, the first 3 sets of groomsmen and bridesmaids went down in pairs (Ron & Hermione, Mona & Sam, and Kairi & Ahk) went next with the ladies carrying black lanterns in lieu of flowers, and Mari soon arrived, a black lantern on one hand and a wagon carrying Kirby on the other, walking down towards the gazebo while Kirby waves and squeaks out ‘Hi!’ at people as he guards the wedding bands inside a small box.

As Mari walked, she could see a couple of guests smiling back at her: Dylan, Palutena, and Lucoa are there with their ever-growing clan of children (the threesome waved at her when they caught her attention), Oaklyn is also present alongside Jade (who’s trying not to visibly tear up too soon) on the right side next to the grass ‘aisle’, Sayeko and Levi are not too far behind along with Erwin, Mike, & Hanji and Roland is also present, not wanting missing his late friends’ child’s big day, Jords is also present with Tess, giving her two thumbs up, Snooper and Jenny, together with their respective families, are on the left side of aisle, giving her a friendly wave, then there’s Violet and her fiance Jonah Heston, both of them gave her a warm encouraging smile.

Once the bridal party settled down on their seats and people’s talks began to quiet down for a few minutes, Issa comes out of the entrance of the garden, bouquet in her hands and wide grin on her face. Everyone watched on as she went down the aisle on her own and approached the gazebo where the ceremony is about to start. When she got near to it, Harry decided to go down the steps to meet up with her; both of them then got the other’s hand and went up the gazebo before facing the Doctor who is already prepared for this very day.

The whole ceremony begins as the Doctor unfurls the scroll of psychic paper (but it was actual written words on it unlike its predecessors, he must have modified it for this day) and begins to talk to the crowd present, “Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today in the garden heart of the City by the Bay to witness the marriage between these two young persons...” He then turned to speak to the couple and spoke, “Harry, Issa. The fact that we’re all here with you today as you make a commitment and start a new chapter in your ever-growing love story and it has formed an intersection in all our lives and it wouldn’t been made possible if your souls haven’t met nearly a decade ago.”

The Doctor continued on his talk for a bit, asking for remembering the loved ones no longer present, daring people if they don’t want the marriage to happen (no one actually did), and then he asked Mari to do a reading of a poem they had picked before he picked up where he last left off, “A marriage is a voluntary and full commitment, made from the deepest sense to the exclusion of others and entered into the hope and desire to last for a lifetime and beyond that. Before you can declare your vows to each other, I would ask you two that you confirm that you’re intending to marry each other today. Now face each other and join hands?”

Both man and woman turn to face each other and join their hands as the Doctor began to ask Issa first some important questions, “Issa, do you come here freely and with no reservations to give yourself to Harry in marriage? Do you promise to love, honour, cherish, and protect him, forsaking all others and holding only onto him forevermore?” She bravely and calmly answered back, “I do, Doctor.” He then turned to Harry asking the same thing, “Harry, do you come here freely and with no reservations to give yourself to Issa in marriage? Do you promise to love, honour, cherish, and protect her, forsaking all others and holding only onto her forevermore?” He also reply the same way she did earlier, “I do, Doctor.”

The Time Lord asked for Kirby to bring up the wedding rings and the little puffball dashed in, holding a small wooden box towards the Doctor and offering it to him. Kirby squeaked ‘Poyo, poyo,’ as the Doctor gives him a cheeky little smile and picks up the box from his stubby little arms. Opening up the box reveals two gold rings: one was a thin ring with a curvy v-shape central arc studded with diamonds, the other was a sleek number with an elevated satin brush finish and polished bevel edges. The rings were then blessed by family, friends, & guests present before the Doctor picked them up & gave a ring each to Harry & Issa and the rings are exchanged among the couple themselves.

The Doctor then starts the next part of the ceremony: The God’s Knot unity ceremony. Harry takes the ring of rope strands from the peg on the wood board and holds onto it as Issa braids the three strands together while the Doctor goes on explaining their significance & symbolism. Once the bride was done braiding the strands with a knot, they went to sign off the all paperwork and the Doctor proceeded into making a quick charge to the couple before finally concluding the event by saying, “Alright then, by the powers vested onto me by the powers that be and the cities of San Francisco & Daly, I can finally declare you two as husband and wife. Harry, you can now...”

He wasn’t even done finishing his sentence when he saw the two finally kissing as a married couple, this quick smack of lips from the now married couple actually gave him a good chuckle, the three of them knew that people are getting impatient to get to the reception by this time. Finally, the ceremony was done and everyone present cheered on as the newly wedded Mr. and Mrs. Potter get out of the garden to have some alone time and soak in the moment.

The backyard has decked out for the dinner reception: not too fancy, but still sincere and sweet as the couple didn’t want all the silly trappings of a normal wedding in their own. Tables were spread out with the dance floor right on the middle and a lounge area besides it, a makeshift photo booth made by Kairi and Karina is also in place with a ton of props and accessories to choose from, the dinner buffet table and drinks station were stationed on the porch for easier access, and some games are available for guests to play with. Dylan’s butler Edgar and Belle’s neighbor Mrs. Potts oversee the catering service with the food and drinks made by a couple of the guests and wedding party members who offered to help in.

As everyone settles in for the party, lights began to light up as the sky enters into the dark night and, since all tables are positioned for everyone to get a good view of the dance floor, guests couldn’t help but to gush and admire the newly wedded couple dancing to Ne-Yo’s Miss Independence. After the first dance, those wanting to dance the night away are more than welcomed to the dance floor and many surely did like the soon-to-be-wedded Hestons, Oak & Jade, Jords & Tess, and Dylan & his goddess wives. Some of the guests who weren’t into dancing still have a fun time playing games, chatting to other guests, have a great dinner, and taking a ton of photos at the photo booth. Some of the bridal party also chatted with some of the guests. Even Kirby enjoyed himself doing his famous Kirby dance in one segment with two other copies of himself as backup dancers, which got everyone going aww and admiring the adorable puffballs’ dancing.

Now by this point, people were expecting a bouquet toss from the bride anytime soon, but for many single Filipinas, this was a major nightmare: being asked to catch a bouquet is like the kiss of death and they won’t have any of this bouquet toss nonsense, not even Issa’s remaining female cousin Nicola was looking forward to it. But unexpectedly, the bride already made her decision: instead of making all the single ladies to catch her bouquet, she called in Mari to the dance floor and gave her bouquet to her instead. This random act of kindness did flustered Mari by a ton, and it touched her so much, considering she WAS the one who got her best friend and her adopted big brother together in the first place.

After a long flustered speech and being socially awkward to a fault, the assistant librarian went back to her seat and was greeted by Philip who was sitting next to her even before the bouquet honor. He looks rather impressed by her talk despite being understandably nervous in front of the public.

“You did well over there,” he kindly praised her speech conviction as she settled down back to her seat.

“Gee, thanks,… Pip,” she blushed in between words.

“Don’t feel too flustered, my dear: everyone here thought it was really good,” Philip replied back before he soon realized that she was able to say his usual nickname, “By Jove, Mari. You managed to muster the courage to use my nickname without fear.”

“Uh… I actually did?” Mari’s eyes widened up in shock.

“Oh yes absolutely. But I’m not mad at you for saying it, I’m actually quite flattered,” he smiled back before he continued a little bit, “Oh, I think I might have something for you ahead of your birthday as well.”

“Yeah, what is it?” she was getting a little confused of his last sentence before her lips were greeted by his in contact; the reaction was of shock, joy, and feeling rather amused.

“Whoa, what was that for?” Mari gasped with her right hand cupping her mouth in surprise, her face turning red in disbelief.

“Now that, Mari, happens to be a kiss,” he cheekily winked back at her.

Unbelievable, her first kiss in Harry and Issa’s wedding. The feeling didn’t sink in her mind yet and she has not that many words to describe this beyond she found it quite estatic. She couldn’t keep her eyes off of Philip, or Pip, or whatever you want to call him as, until Uncle Gru informs everyone that it’s time for the bubble send off and everyone grabs their bubble tubes and circles the couple around as they head off to their mini-honeymoon (the big one will have to wait for later) out of town. After a quick countdown, all the guests start blowing bubbles at Harry and Issa while they walked out of the house and into the car for the trip.

With that one chapter finally recorded in her mind, Mari couldn’t help but to feel happy for both of them so much, knowing that they will have many great years ahead of them and their future no matter what the past and fate told them otherwise. And there is another thing that is also crystal clear: her future with Philip is also looking rather just as bright as the backyard string lights and lanterns that lit up the sky that night…

Autism Acceptance Month 2021

April 27th: What is your favourite form of media? For example, do you enjoy books? What format do you prefer for books (physical, e-book, audiobook)? Did you love reading as a kid but find it challenging as you got older? How about movies, tv, or video games? Do you have a favourite series?

I can't really choose one favorite form of media, they're all so good! I love books, movies, and cartoons! In terms of books, I love reading anything that is in the horror/mystery genre. I personally love R.L Stine, Stephen King, Lemony Snicket, Edgar Allan Poe, Lovecraft, and others. In terms of format, I personally enjoy physical books. I've made myself quite the small library and I like the way it is. But of course, I'm always looking to expand my library. If it's not in the horror genre, I also like books on astronomy, animals, (especially owls and large cats), and of course witchcraft books. I don't find reading challenging in the slightest, as I've been reading ever since I was of age to do so. I mean of course I do sometimes have trouble with sticking to one book at a time, so I often find myself jumping from book to book as I'm in the middle of reading another. I also sometimes have to read sentences again to understand it, (only sometimes though). Other than that, I don't have problems understanding the material in the books. Oh boy, movies, I mostly enjoy Disney movies, Pixar movies, and scary movies. For Disney, my favorite movie is Wreck it Ralph (which is the best movie, change my mind), Tangled, The Princess and the Frog. I also like Meet the Robinsons, and Bolt too. Pixar, I like Coco, all three Toy Story movies, Monsters Inc, Inside Out, and Finding Nemo and Finding Dory. Scary movies I love are The Nightmare on Elm Street, The Descent, Child's Play, Happy Death Day, It, The Thing, and others.

For TV shows, there's a lot I like. For example, I like The Owl House, Gravity Falls, Amphibia, Avatar; The Last Airbender, Big City Greens, Tangled The Series, Ducktales, Spongebob, My Little Pony, Miraculous Ladybug, Villainous, Ghost Adventures,The Twilight Zone (both the classic and the recent) Impractical Jokers, The Simpsons, Hazbin Hotel, Helluva Boss, My Life as a Teenage Robot, and a little bit of The Loud House.

In terms of video games, I grew up with the Super Mario games, so I love Super Mario games. I'm also into sonic as well, but not too much as I grew up with the Mario characters, but I enjoy them too. In video games I own, I have both Super Mario Galaxy games, Super Mario 64 DS, Mario Kart wii, Mario Party 8, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, a few Just Dance games, Wii Sports, Call of Duty Black Ops, and one Sonic game, which is Sonic Colors, and last but certainly not least, Kirby and the Amazing Mirror, and Super Mario Advance.

7. Hours of sleep: About 7 I think; it’s becoming a new standard.

8. Dogs or cats: Cats are the greatest pet to grace our existence, as we came to the world not to be served, but to serve ;P.

9. Number of blankets: *The Count’’s voice* Three, three blankets for a twin bed, ha ha ha~. It’s the thin sheet that serves as a layer between the bed and the warm blanket, the previously mentioned warm blankets, and the thick one used to cover everything. Think of it as the top of a burger bun; fluffy and made to be instagrammed a lot (since I take my game pictures there XP).

10. Dream trip: Considering I somehow became the heir to Scrooge McDuck fortune or something, I guess I would visit France along two or three friends. A trip is nice and all, but having someone to share it with is what makes it really magical X3..

11. Dream job: School counselor, I would love to help the younger generations on their path to become better people and on their academic success. If not, a librarian; I may not read a lot, but my neatness would keep a library in perfect order. Sadly, both of those require a master’s degree and I can only go the distance so far... Teacher assistant shall be the next best thing I suppose, or working at a hospital ^w^.

13. Birthday: August, the 17th. The day the sun shined upon my humble hometown and made narwhals fly too.

14. Favorite bands: Daft Punk and Crush 40 are the only bands I recall getting more than two CD’s from so… I’m more of a remix / orchestra / solo artist kind of guy.

15. Favorite solo artists: Owl City, Troye Sivan, Toby Fox, String Player Gamer, Pogo, Mary Elizabeth McGlynn; insert others XD.

16. Song stuck in my head: “Big Band! Kirby” (The smooth jazz rendition of Aqua Star from Kirby 64 and Save Point from Super Star are just sooooo good <3.)

17. Last movie I watched: High Speed! -Free! Starting Days- if we count what I see in home, for theater releases please see Black Panther.

18. Last show I watched: Sonic Boom -Season 2- Finally catching up to it! XD

Kingdom Hearts: Traveling through various Disney worlds, living in Daybreak town, trying to unravel the secrets of the universe, fighting heartless and more importantly, a way to be in The Grid without taking a slot on this list. Yeah, I would love to do that, please XD..

Animal Crossing: Literally a tiny paradise, filled with friendly animals and plenty of things to do. Sometimes I still pop the game open just to take a virtual coffee and see the ocean. It really feels like a break from reality, and to live in such a serene world would be a bliss <3.

Any Tales world: A place where magic exists, the world seems ever expanding, and everything ain’t as black and white as in other video games. Sometimes we are forced to fight, sometimes the bad guys have good intentions, but we can always count on the good times, the jokes, looking awesome and drama, drama galore XD.
