Top 5 Fandoms Written: I have only written for Far Cry 5, Twilight, and dabbled in Vampire Academy/Bloodlines before I stopped writing for years.

Top 5 Fandoms You Want To Write For/More: Well I will continue to write for Far Cry 5 but I’d love to get back into Bloodlines as the story and world building was amazing and I don’t think the author will go back to that world so I must make my own content. I’d have been open to Vampire the Masquerade with the new game that was coming out but who knows. I’m finding I need more completed material to write for. I’d also like Legends of Tomorrow but I wouldn’t want to taint it with my mediocrity. 

Stories You Wish More People Knew About: Just any of them really I guess. Granted I need to write for Liz and Lance more but like there is an interconnectedness between them so it’s all just one story when you think about it just different perspectives.

Ship(s) Written The Most: According to my Masterlist it seems that I have written a lot for Chance and Faith, Catlina and John, and then the Brains and Disaster trio which is mostly an OCxOC romantic ship and friendship. 

Character(s) Written The Most: I believe this may go more to Cat by like a small margin as number one just for the fact that she was my first and so she has a lot more material. Chance is catching up though, he just have the more published material so far.

How Many OCs Do You Have: 4 for Far Cry 5. I have ideas for one in Bloodlines but I’m too scared to bring them out as the fandom died years ago haha.

How Many Series Do You Have: Technically 4 as each character has their own arc and story but they are all in the same universe so it could just be considered one series with individual books if that makes sense. Oh and a few others if we count AUs as there are some with other people’s OCs. Look I’m a sporadic writer at this point and I just write and post whatever comes to mind or if there are prompts that inspire. These are the current ones as this could also be referring to what I wrote in high school which had the Twilight one and the Vampire Academy one.

What Do You Do With Fics You’re No Longer Interested In?: I don’t really know....I guess it depends on the context really. I still keep the drafts of prompts and chapters just in case I ever want to go back to them but I’ve never really lost interest in my current writings and I’m not counting my high school ones as I was young and moved on really. Who knows? Most of my recent chapters and what not have been things I started or finished in late night hazes but never went back to them until just now. 

Coming Soon: Canon Cat! I am determined to get a few of her chapters out there. Two of which are part of her character decent from her sweet self and then a little bit more light hearted drunk Cat with John. Also! A Dark Cat with @strafethesesinners Cooper.

She pushed her way through the crowd, drink in hand to the front door. The cold air felt good against her warm skin, as she looked for John’s form in the night. He stood to the side of the building keeping his head down. She skipped to him trying to not spill her drink. “Hey there stranger!” She practically shouted into the night, “Wait shhh, right secret.” She giggled as quietly as she could while being this far into her drunkenness. She had a low tolerance and was pretty sure they were giving her alcohol that she wasn’t used to drinking. She also had lower impulse control and kissed him on the cheek. “I didn’t expect you here. You come to celebrate?” She held up the glass as if he needed more explanation.

His expression was amused from what she could see in the neon light, he held her steady as the chill from the night started to hit her. “I see you’re doing plenty of that for the both of us. How many drinks have you had tonight?,” Cat held up five fingers taking another sip of the one in her hand, “So this one is number six?” She nodded, smiling feeling the color come to her cheeks. He smiled and she rolled her eyes, “I’d love to join you but I just came to give you your gift.”

Do You Accept Prompts?: Oh for sure! Sometimes I need the prompting but I also don’t mind playing around with AUs and different timelines and things like that as they can bring out different aspects of the characters I feel. 

How Do You Feel About Kudos?: Oh they are wonderful but not always needed it does help in showing that you’re enjoying it and I will write more if its making people happy.

Do You Read Fic As Well?: I do on occasion. I do like longer fics at times but I also love reading the smaller pieces that people write also! I just don’t always hate the time or energy to keep up all the time but I do try.

30AOS Catch Up!

I’m not able to participate in the 30-Day AOS Challenge, but I wanted to jot down all of my answers for my own memories. Guys, we are almost there!! I’m not ready!! But I love you guys and you have made these last years and the last 30 days so wonderful!! Thank you!! 

Day 1- Favorite Season: Season 4! It was tight and well-constructed, and I just adored the A-B-C arc breakdown and how smoothly they tied together

Day 2- Favorite Episode: “Self-Control”. Truly an amazing showcase of Iain, Liz, and Chloe’s acting + plus incredible fight scenes + top notch tension and suspense. I don’t get tired of it. 

Day 3-Favorite Storyline: The Framework arc because I am a SUCKER for AUs, and it was so wonderful to see Ward be good, Mace be a superhero, Coulson be normal, Fitz and May be evil, and Tripp be alive. And the references to the current political climate were just a cherry on top 

Day 4-Favorite Male Character: Mack, he is the definition of a good man, and he deserves a break haha

Day 5- Favorite Female Character: My girlfriend, my hero, Daisy Johnson, of course :) 

Day 6- Favorite Friendship: Ugh, you’re gonna make me choose?? Coulson-Fitz-Hunter team up in Season 2. It was the Father-Older Son-Younger Son relationship none of them asked for :D 

Day 7- Favorite Ship: Philinda. The way they trust! Love! Defend! They are a SoulTP.

Day 8- Favorite Noncanon Ship: Ugh, you’re gonna make me choose again?? Skimmons or Fitzdaisy. No I will not be choosing between the two. The perfect union is Fitzskimmons, obviously 

Day 9- Favorite Guest Star: Am I allowed to say Stan Lee? :(  I miss him, and it was such a great scene 

Day 10- Favorite Recurring Character: Ghost Rider. Robbie was so powerful and complicated and understandable and good and deserved so much, and Gabriel Luna deserves his own TV show. Honorable mention to Cal, whose arc was amazing and I love and miss him. 

Day 11- Favorite Villain: John Garrett. He was a nutjob at the end, but leading up to it, he was so damn charismatic and brilliant in the way he played SHIELD the way he did. And no one could chew a scene the way Bill Paxton could. RIP.

Day 12- Funniest character: LANCE HUNTER. He brought a perfect, sincere dry wit that has yet to be replicated in the show 

Day 13- Character you wish would return: I’ve said this a thousand times: Joey Gutierrez. A good soul too good for SHIELD, but I would just like to know he’s doing good. Also Vijay Nadeer  (Come on, @writers, you have one more season! Tie up that plotline!)  

Day 14-Underrated character: Elena “Yoyo” Rodriguez! She deserve so much love. She’s strong and passionate and smart and justice-driven and unafraid to be confident and cheeky. She inspires so much of my own self-confidence 

Day 15- Saddest Death: I know what is the saddest death. You know the one. The one at the end of S5. But we do not speak of it. It has been two years. We do not rewatch that scene. We do not acknowledge it. We yell at Iain for being too good at his job. We cry. That is it. Hahaha, okay, real answer: Tripp’s! The way that he went in there and destroyed the crystal to save his friend, and it was totally useless, and she wakes up just as he crumbles. DEVASTATING. 

Day 16-Best Season Premiere: I was gonna say Season 1′s because it was fun and cheeky and had me hooked from the start, but... Iain stole this award for Season 3. The suit!! The confession of love!! His devastation at “Maveth”! THE SCREAMING AT THE ROCK. 

Day 17-Best Season Finale: Season 5. It revealed itself and wrapped itself up so beautifully. Daisy’s fight with Graviton was truly worthy of the MCU big screen (And yes, I still think want to see Daisy vs Thanos)

Day 18-Favorite Season 1 Moment: Too many to choose from, so I’m not gonna even try. Simmons’ “Laws of Thermodynamics” Speech. Coulson and Mike Peterson’s showdown at the station in episode 1. Skye’s “God is love”. Ward’s HYDRA reveal to the team. All of Nick Fury.  All of “T.R.A.C.K.S.”  (my favorite episode)

Day 19-Favorite Season 2 Moment: Skye’s transformation. Favorite episode  “Melinda” 

Day 20-Favorite Season 3 Moment: Again, FITZ SCREAMING AT THE ROCK. Favorite episode “Purpose in the Machine” 

Day 21- Favorite Season 4 Moment: The Skimmons hug in “Self-Control”. Favorite episode again is “Self-Control”

Day 22- Favorite Season 5 Moment: Daisy’s fight with Graviton, especially when she discovers the serum. Favorite episode “Fun & Games”, but dang if “The Devil Complex” isn’t a ride and deserves a shoutout on this list. 

Day 23- Favorite Season 6 Moment: The ladies night fight :D Favorite episode “Fear and Loathing on the Planet of Kitson”

People are not that complicated. THEY JUST WANT THEIR OTP TOGETHER. No one gives a fuck about all the random girls Michael is screwing. They care that apparently he had to be shown with Maria, they it had to be a THING so that there would be DRAMA. So there there was the possibility of a love triangle and conflict. So that Michael would always have someone else around with the ‘will they won’t they’ vibe. No one cares that Maria is a woman or that Maria is black. They only care about malex.

I’ve been trying to figure out how to answer this for the past couple of days, and I would like to start with this. Nowhere on my blog in any capacity have I said anything about Maria being black, so I would like to clarify that that is TOTALLY not what I’m saying or will ever say, although I have seen people make the case that that is why some people are mad (@witchwolfmouse most recently made that point)

Now that that’s out of the way. Onto what I was saying.

First of all. Am I a Malex shipper? HELL YES. Do I love Maria? SHE’S FREAKING AWESOME! Did I enjoy the hookup?… Well, yes. Yes I did.

Michael and Maria are both adults, they were both consenting and they were both into each other. Maria was not baited, she chose to sleep with him, and she was not being used. She had full power. Do I think they’re gonna continue to hook up? No, but who knows. I don’t write the show.

However, what I am happy about is that they have shown Michael with a man and a woman so early in the series. I’ve been in a lot of fandoms, specifically for CW shows and shows with bi characters, and the problem that comes up is that fandom tends to erase the fact that they’re bi when they are shown in a long term same sex relationship. Clarke Griffin is an example; her most prominent and long term relationship was with Lexa and has mostly been depicted with women, and a lot of people call her lesbian. The same has happened with Sara Lance, who has been mainly shown with women, and has been called lesbian numerous times. Caity Lotz once even had to inform a “fan” on Twitter that Sara is bi, because even after Sara literally had the line “I like men and I like women”, a fan proceeded to say she was gay that very same day.

I am happy that they are showing Michael’s bisexuality. It’s easy to say a character is bi, but it’s another thing to actually show it (CW fixed this issue with Constantine, a bi character who wasn’t able to own it on his own show but was able to show it on Legends.) It’s easy to call Michael bi by saying that he sleeps with random women but not actually showing anything, but it’s different to actually show him with a woman. Did it have to be Maria? No, but adding in a random character for Michael to sleep with wouldn’t have had the same effect as someone who is already established on the show.

Will it cause drama later on? I’m sure. It already is. But will there be a will they won’t they? Doesn’t seem like it. Maria doesn’t even really wanna breathe the same air as Michael right now. People obviously want their otps together and there’s nothing wrong with that. I want Malex to be together too. But it’s important to actually SHOW a bi character as bi, and not just say it, and that’s what they did. It’s a great thing.

And for Maria, it isn’t a bad thing for her character. She had already stated that she thought Michael was hot, and she didn’t know that him and Alex were involved, so she did absolutely nothing wrong. However, after this, I am hoping for Maria to get more storylines going forward, not just related to sleeping with people. I want her to have storylines outside the bar, and with Liz, and to find out about aliens, and yes, for her friendship with Michael to grow from this, and for her and Alex to be stronger than ever. The drama will pass, and I’m hoping for the ships and the friendships to grow stronger once it’s passed.

Bored Now: Arrow 6x19 Review (The Dragon)

What in the ever-loving hill tops of Olympus was THAT?

I was exhausted Thursday, so I missed the episode. However, I waited until Sunday because I wasn’t motivated to watch given the fan reaction. But I figured it couldn’t be that bad right?

Yes. Yes it can.

I would rather watch Oliver pontificate about his super-secret plan to stop gun violence (without revealing his super-secret plan to stop gun violence) than “The Dr*gon.” I would rather watch L*urel earn her BC suit (without really earning it) by hallucinating her dead sister. I could watch Oliver and Sara bang fifty times over. Yes, I know what I am saying. 6x19 is worse than all the terrible 13th episodes combined! After six years and 134 episodes I am bestowing “The Dr*gon” with the title of WORST EPISODE EVER.  Congratulations. We have a new low.

I flitted between enraged and bored watching “The Dr*gon”, so I feel Evil Willow’s iconic expression conveys my emotions nicely.

Felicity Smoak and Curtis Holt

This is the first week post Oliver firing Felicity. Yes, he can dress it up any way he likes, but that’s exactly what he did. Felicity chooses to devote her extra free time to her company and reaches out to Curtis for a truce. A truce in these writers’ minds means FELICITY APOLOGIZES TO CURTIS. 

Liz Kim, who co wrote the episode, explained:

Let’s pretend we live in a world of rainbows and unicorns where the main governing body is the Girl Scouts and instead of paying taxes we get free cookies. 

We must live in this kind of world to understand what Liz Kim is pushing. Fine. Felicity isn’t holding a grudge. She’s being the bigger person and is sorry for her role in the fight. If we look objectively at all six characters Felicity has the least to apologize for, but that’s just details. 

What infuriates me is Curtis just stands there and glowers at her. He oozes moral superiority, contempt and arrogance. 

Why, dear writer, didn’t Curtis then apologize to Felicity? If this is all about being the bigger person and not holding a grudge, why didn’t Curtis step up to the plate next? Last time I checked, Curtis has as much to apologize for if not more than Felicity. Instead, we get Felicity apologizing to yet another man on this show and Curtis just stands there like a condescending lump. 

UNACCEPTABLE.

Then Curtis cannot hide his glee over Diggle quitting the team. He wants to skip around the room and sing, “Nananana boo boo” while Felicity is distraught about her husband being alone in the field. CURTIS HAS THE NERVE TO TELL FELICITY HE MUST FIGHT THE DESIRE TO GLOAT. But sure, what an amazing friend. 

Listen asshat, if you tell someone you are trying not to gloat that’s the same as gloating.

Why is Curtis the only “friend” Felicity is ever allowed to speak to? Why couldn’t she have gone to Lance or even Diggle. Diggle has a beef with Oliver, not Felicity. I don’t see how going to Curtis is any better than going to John in Oliver’s eyes. Hell, I’d take a phone call Thea over this. I don’t need to hear her side of the conversation.

How does anything Curtis says correlate to real friendship? He states the obvious – Felicity is using work to distract her from worrying about Oliver. OH MY GOD. THANK YOU SO MUCH CURTIS. WHAT WOULD WE HAVE DONE WITHOUT YOU HERE TO EXPLAIN THAT COMPLETELY OBVIOUS PLOT POINT TO US ALL?

Then, he almost laughs in her face about it, but can control himself enough to only gloat. Wow. Felicity’s friendship cup runneth over. And last, but not least, he refuses to take any responsibility for his role in the team breakdown. How magnanimous of him. What a petty little prick.

Also, why is Curtis always the one to fix a problem with the Helix tech? JUST ONCE I would like to see Felicity solve something tech related to this company without Curtis’ help. Felicity Smoak can program and hack anything. SHE INVENTED THE KEY PIECE OF RAY’S ATOM SUIT. But whenever Curtis is around she is forced to be clueless and rely on Curtis’ brilliance to save the day because LOOK AT WHAT A GOOD TEAM THEY ARE. She is a shining example of a genius female character and now she’s being used to prop Curtis’ man baby brain. It’s nauseating and unbelievably insulting to my gender.

If this is the route Arrow chooses to fix the breach between the two teams (OTA members apologizing while Newbies gloat) then I can safely say I will not forgive the newbies for anything they’ve done. They will be on my list of “Characters Who Need to Die” for the remainder of the show. Starting with my number one spot – Curtis Holt.

Olicity

At least the writers knew the only way to get Olicity fans to watch this garbage pile of nonsense was to stick a 3 minutes Olicity scene at the end and promo the crap out of it.  Unfortunately, the scene didn’t give me “all the feels” the writers intended. 

Felicity comes home in a panic after watching a news report stating the Green Arrow is probably dead.

Oliver pops up behind her and a very relieved Felicity throws herself into his arms. Any gooey feels I have over Felicity’s concern and emotional hug are about to be obliterated. Felicity informs Oliver this set up doesn’t work for her. When she’s in the bunker, and knows where he is or can see what is happening, it’s easier to cope with her worry. Oliver condescendingly implies there’s very little Felicity can do to help him while she’s in the bunker.

Excuse me, but is Oliver a pod person now? How do we get from THIS

to THIS 

to THIS. 

Do the Arrow writers watch Arrow? This is why people get so fed up. We can go from one episode to the next and characters act completely OOC to push a storyline along. Oliver “You’re My Partner” Queen is now saying Felicity can do very little to help? 

Let’s just unravel the entire basis of the show and the reason the character exists in the first place 

for another bullshit Oliver Queen regression that makes no sense. 

All I am asking for is a modicum of character cohesion and storyline consistency. Is it so much to ask that the Arrow writers know the show and characters they are writing for? I think not.

After Felicity correctly argues she can and HAS helped Oliver many times, he does another 180 and tells Felicity she can never be helpless. Cool bro, but you stated the exact opposite 15 seconds ago. 

Oliver decides it’s time to placate his wife’s legitimate fears by telling her he will always come home.

Sure, it’s a nice foreshadow for the future since Oliver is probably going to land himself in jail. This scene can serve as reassurance for all those terrified Oliver is going to do 25 to life. I take issue with the promise, however. Do you know why Oliver didn’t make that promise to Felicity in 2x09? 

Because he respected her too much to lie to her. Oliver knew then he doesn’t always have control over what happens to him in this line of work. Accepting death and not being afraid of it is part of the job description. Oliver knows this is a promise he can’t keep because NOBODY CAN. The tiny look of hesitation and resignation his face after hugging Felicity proves it.

We tell our children little white lies to ease their fears because sometimes they aren’t old enough to understand the truth. Was the promise Oliver made to William completely true? No. Should he have made the promise? Probably not, but I understood why he did. Oliver was trying to ease his son’s fears because William is a child.

But Felicity is a grown woman. Oliver doesn’t need to tell little white lies to his wife so he can continue his deeply stupid need to regress. The only reason Felicity needs to buy into this obvious lie is so she can function while Oliver is out in the field by himself.  How about Oliver LISTENS to his wife and acknowledges the truth – he can’t do this without her. Even emotionally stunted Oliver Queen understood THAT. 

We’re really supposed to believe emotionally evolved Oliver doesn’t? 

I MEAN GIVE ME A FRIGGIN BREAK.

This is why viewers get so frustrated with Arrow. The characters can change personalities like the show changes writers. 

Things we know to be true, and are the backbone of the series, are tossed aside to make an illogical plotlines work. It does nothing to service the characters, show or viewers. All that’s left is a terrible hour of television.

The Dr*gon and Bl*ck S*ren

The function of this episode is to make us give a flying flip about the Dr*gon. However, we are given a sloppily slapped together back story that doesn’t connect to any of the main characters whatsoever – particularly Oliver.  

Di*z grew up in an orphanage and was bullied by an older boy. This is the reason he’s become a menace to society. 

He named his fear “The Dr*gon” and tattooed it everywhere because he’s so tortured and intense.

He’s been trying to move up the criminal ladder to conquer his fear and be respected as a legitimate crime lord. Ummm… okay? Good luck with that. WHY DO I CARE? Oh, that’s right. I don’t. 

Ultimately, Di*z gets a seat on the Quadrant (Season 7 villain set up for sure) and revenge on the kid who bullied him as a child. The moral of the story is don’t be a bully because someday the kid you tortured might show up on your door step and light you on fire.

I thought this was supposed to be the season of many villains. Weren’t we doing away with the singular Big Bad? Why are we suddenly zeroing in on the lamest villain in the group? He’s so lame the writers had to come up with an entire episode to mitigate the lameness.

Di*z and Sir*n spend 85% of the episode sitting in a car trading fortune cookie sayings with one another. They go on and on and on about power, control and not being a dog. It’s a lot about not rolling over, bellies, tails... maybe an ear. Think of every single villain cliché you’ve ever seen and that sums up “The Dr*gon.” 

Di*z’s moves are utterly predicable and I’ve heard the dialogue in about fifty other shows/movies. I wish they had just gone full throttle with plagiarism and stuck, “I’ll make him an offer he can’t refuse” in there. It’d feel more honest.

BS spends the entire episode asking the big strong man how to be a big strong villain. So, a win for feminism all around. 

BS is so busy telling Di*z not to “roll over” she fails to see she’s following him around like a lost puppy.  

Di*z is the lamest Arrow villain in history (Yes, even worse than Sebastian Blood), but BS is his henchman. So, what does that make her? Nothing good! I’ll tell ya that much. 

In C*ssidy’s defense the dialogue is cringe worthy, but she didn’t make it any better with the over the top acting.

BS tells Di*z not to be a wuss, but when he listens she acts like she has a problem with violence. YOU JUST TOLD HIM NOT TO ROLL OVER. HE’S DOING WHAT YOU ASKED, KEVIN. 

Yet, her eyes cannot behold the horror of Di*z beating a man. Her soul withers at the sight of Di*z killing. She blinks, sighs and turns away in disgust. SHE IS SO CONFLICTED.

Oh, holy hell. Are you kidding me with this crap? This is the same character who killed a security guard begging for his life. This is the same character who screamed in another man’s ear until his veins popped. She’s tried to kill the team multiple times. It’s a little difficult to believe BS has a hard time watching someone get punched. But we’re supposed to believe it because REDEMPTION. Sorry, Imma gonna need a little more than excessive blinking from C*ssidy to sell me on that one.

Di*z’s need to be a legitimate crime boss doesn’t mean the character translates as any more than the common street thug he is. His backstory is intended to make him look complex, but it does the direct opposite. We’ve seen “a villain is made not born” trope a thousand times, including on Arrow. Unfortunately, “bullied in an orphanage” doesn’t hold up against the backstories of Slade, Merlyn, Ra’s Ahl Ghul or Prometheus. 

BS has the nerve to compare Di*z to Adrian Chase and I laughed out loud. 

BS spent all of 15 seconds with Chase, but she knows his anger consumed him? Okay, cupcake. Whatever you say. Comparing the genius ways Chase inflicted pain and revenge on Oliver to the Dr*gon’s hum drum plan of vertigo and the Quadrant is just wrong. Why didn’t they do this villain focused episode with PROMETHEUS? That would have been a good time.

“But Jen, you didn’t like Prometheus at first. You thought he was boring and then you loved him.” Sure, that’s true, but by episode 19 we were full throttle on Adrian’s crazy.

There’s nothing to unmask with Di*z. This isn’t Josh Segarra going to another level. If it was those things then 6x19 was the episode to do it. All that’s revealed is more boring on top of boring.  I can tolerate a misfire in the 10-15-episode range, but we’re rapidly approaching the end. It is incredibly late in the season to be telling us why we should give a flying fig newtin about Di*z. The writers need to come armed with a hell of a lot more than bullied and power hungry for a chair.

Stray Thoughts

It’s safe to say it’s going to be a terrible episode if the writer is tweeting as a PR defense strategy. We shouldn’t need episodes explained to us, but if we do then the answers should make a modicum of sense.

Oliver was in episode 3x10 more AND HE WAS “DEAD.” There’s a reason why Stephen Amell is the star. He carries the show. Don’t ever bench him, writers.

Chiming in as a bisexual to say you're wrong about Isobel and if you don't have the experience to understand the nuances that make a relationship between a bi woman and a man different from a straight woman and a man, maybe not talk about it at all. It isn't as if the show hasn't been able to show men and women just being friends, in fact there are several examples, so what this comes down to is being annoyed a bi woman's primary love interest is a man and wanting Isobel treated differently than anyone else when it comes to love triangles. Isobel/Anatsa is being written similarly to Alex/Forrest, Liz/Heath and Max/Cameron, and while Michael/Maria lasted almost an entire season, Alex was frequently a central part of Michael's stories during that time. If anything the issue is about how Black women are treated, not WLW.

I do genuinely appreciate this feedback, anon. I apologize in advance for the novel-length response, but it's clear that my desire to avoid a novel-length critique in my original post has misconstrued the key issues I was trying to address. I will start with saying though, your claim that I don't have the experience to understand the nuances that differentiate straight women and bi women in relationships with men just because I personally do not currently identify as bisexual and thus I shouldn't speak on bi issues is ridiculously unfounded but I am choosing to believe you are good faith and so I will respond in kind :)

What predominantly rubs me the wrong way about the Kyle/Isobel pairing is how CW (which my critique was aimed at! at a corporation who views queer people as $ makers rather than humans worthy of sincere storytelling! i made that very clear in the op) has a history of similar downplaying of bisexual experiences-- think the queerbaiting in the first season of Riverdale, or how Sara Lance's bisexuality was handled in the first few seasons of LOT (actually my main critique of Sara's is the initial downplaying of her attraction to men in order for cheap "oh she's a horndog" jokes about her & women, so your "i am just annoyed that a bi woman's primary love interest is a man" assertion holds no water), the list goes on. There are some exceptions, of course, but when comparing straight relationships to queer relationships of any gender pairing, opposite sex relationships are almost always given space to be Shown vs same sex relationships being almost always Told (an important distinction in any story writing). CW creative executives want the laurels of being queer inclusive, but they are terrified of being "too gay" and almost always default to normative and/or shallow representations. Hell, Superwoman has a whole ass lesbian character, but I see more lesbians fawn over the imaginary ship of two straight characters than actually connect with Alex & her love interests. However, seeing as I have not watched any of these shows in several seasons I'll give them the benefit of the doubt that CW may have course corrected, but I am extremely dubious. My critiques come from a place of sociological media analysis and the technical craft aspects of storytelling, both of which are my formal & informal areas of study. It’s the reason I have a specific tag for discussing media, although I fully admit that sometimes it’s just venting or ooooo-ing rather than principled analysis, which can make it fuzzy to suss out what my “deal” is.

"there are several examples [of men & women just being friends]" it’s an ensemble cast, of course some of the men & women are friends. But I am talking about the specifics of Kyle & Isobel’s friendship, which is unique to other m/w platonic friendships in the show. Kyle was the first man outside of her family who she developed a deep friendship with after the horror that was her experience with Noah. She was a guarded character before, but that guardedness understandably heightened after that trauma. So to me, it really undermines the power of traumatized women finding trust in good men (and Kyle is indeed a very good man) only for the relationship to iNeViTaBlY develop into romance. They had that one scene in the gay bar where they almost hooked up, but beyond that there was nothing to my eye that indicated Kyle was heavily falling in love with her (and don’t get me started about how Steph’s character was basically just a love interest with very little bearing on the actual plot before disappearing entirely). So to me, it comes out of nowhere, and instead of an organic friends-to-lovers trope it only serves to reinforce the idea that if a Good Guy is patient enough, he will break free of the dreaded friendzone as long as he puts enough kind supportiveness tokens into his traumatized woman friend. Everyone has different life experiences that will paint their interpretation of this, and my life experiences are that which place great value on male friends supporting traumatized women (or any gender person) without the ulterior hope that one day you’ll get to smash, so you can’t assert that my interpretation of this point is “wrong”. Without delving into my personal history, I see part of myself Isobel's experience, and I also see the former friend who tried to make a move on me when I thought I could rely on him after some separate fucked up shit happened, because that's how immersing yourself in fiction works. But if you have different life experiences & don't have that baggage painting how you view the storyline & like Kyle & Isobel as a pairing, that's fine! I'm not saying anyone is wrong or bad for seeing something that I don't personally see. That's the magic of fiction!

As far as the love triangle point you’re trying to make, I found most of the ones you listed as pretty meh b-plot conflicts that didn’t really matter, since the writing on the wall since episode 1 is that Max/Liz & Alex/Michael are endgame, so of course there will be relationships in between to amp up the yearning but will obviously they will not be a genuine threat. A real, juicy love triangle needs to hook the reader/audience into believing there is a legitimate rivalry & chance that the endgame ship might actually not be endgame. Like, Heath absolutely had no chance at usurping Max. Michael & Maria are the exception where the relationship did feel grounded, but it still wasn't enough to trick me into thinking that Michael & Alex wouldn't ultimately come back together. So I don’t really think that the love triangle trope has any bearing to Anatsa/Isobel/Kyle situation, but that’s a matter of personal taste in the tropes we like. I am personally very picky about love triangles & it's on the lower end of tropes I enjoy, which is another factor in why I am being such a stickler on this one.

We are 100% in agreement with your last point, how CW does an appalling disservice to the only dark-skinned Black woman on the show (this is another CW trend. Again, it is the pattern of bad behavior that has made me so frustrated with this and other shows). There were what, three? episodes in s3 where she actually had screentime in any prominent way, and they frame her almost as an antagonist during the cheap “wah wah not all cops are bastards wah wah i’m a good cop” story arc that made me cringe out of my skin. She was key to arranging the sting on the racist militia, yet Max continues to be hostile to her (yes I understand that in s4e1 he was trying to dissuade her from investigating the alien thing, but he HAD to have known, given their history, that playing cranky cop would not be effective on her, so the only reason i can parse is that he doesn’t like her because because she hurt his fee-fees with correctly pointing out that marginalized communities of color aren’t going to rush to trust him, even if he is a nice guy out of uniform). Then, circling back to her role as a love interest & the distinction of showing vs telling, there is 1 episode in s3 where we get to see Isobel being flustered over her crush & ultimately asking her out, and we get next to nothing about Anatsa's feelings, and then she is gone until one scene in the final episode, where her appearance isn’t centered on her and Isobel, rather it’s about KYLE watching her with Isobel and being sad about it. Isobel and Anatsa didn’t even get one full on-screen episode as a couple before the Pining Kyle arc began, so you cannot look me in the eye & tell me that the writing execs really value Anatsobel. We then skip to 6 months later, where we learn she and Isobel are in love (yay!) but we don’t get to witness the moments that make a relationship, that bring us along for the ride of two badass women falling for each other. Which is forgivable in other contexts, but given all the other compounding details that trouble me, it ends up feeling like a cheap workaround to get away with featuring less queer love. Clearly the relationship will not last, and given that her role as a love interest is currently surpassing her role as a journalist (I’ve only watched episode 1 of s4 so there is plenty of time for me to be wrong on this point, & I hope I am), I am extremely nervous & frustrated that we will lose Anatsa entirely in this final season because of CW’s track record with blackness & queerness, especially when they intersect. I could break it down further with examples from other CW shows, but this response is long enough as it is for me to dig in as deep as this subject deserves & I think this is an area that is genuinely not appropriate for me (as a saltine) to speak on with authority, and it goes without saying that I invite black women to chime in if you think I’ve gotten my analysis wrong on CW's pattern of handling race.

I hope that I’ve better explained myself, because as someone who is blessed to have many bi friends of all genders, I do not want to unintentionally spread rhetoric that leaves them feeling alienated. If you still have concerns, anon, I genuinely welcome it. If you message me privately off-anon we might be able to have more of a conversation rather than me writing a small essay where I'm trying to cover a lot of ground & may have missed important points, lol. I believe greatly in the power of queer storytelling, stories of ALL flavors of queerness, and bisexuals in particular have gotten thrown under the bus in every direction when it comes to depictions in media, which is why I get such a stick up my butt whenever I get the bad bi storytelling tingles. I will not apologize for wanting Anatsa around more, and to be glib & gay about it, nor will I apologize for simply wanting more girl-on-girl smooching. Kyle is nice, but can he shoot a bow & arrow? No? Well consider my case rested.

An Appreciation Post for Arrow

With the new episodes and the new season of Arrow getting quite a bit of backlash, I haven’t hesitated to recently express how I think the show can do no wrong. I mean there are things I don’t agree with or things I would do differently but that doesn’t mean I don’t still love it. 

So this post will kind of explain what I love so much about it and why I think that as well as the deeper connection I have to it, Oliver Queen, the Lance sisters, and so on.

Let’s get to it. 

The first non-emotional part of it is because I was impressed with how the writers remember things. My first true “wow” moment was in like season 4 or 5 (can’t remember which season to be honest. Best bet is 5 though). I had been thinking about the flash backs in season 3 and remembered that when Oliver was searching his dad’s computer, there were video files for him and Thea. Oliver watched his later at his house but we never saw Thea’s so naturally I was curious. However, I only had to wait a scene or two and we actually did get to see it. I was so impressed. Little things like that get me all the time though. But there’s just these things like that that they do and it’s just so cool to see they don’t forget their roots. 

Now for the emotional part. 

Trigger warning for Suicide. 

A lot of people don’t know that I actually started watching this show a little over a year ago. 

Early 2017/late 2016 I was really into Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles after I had finished watching a show called Haven and didn’t really have a show or movie series to watch. I liked the 2012 version mostly because my youngest cousin was into it and the little guy got me into it. I liked Casey Jones the most so when I saw Out Of The Shadows I instantly fell in love with Amell’s portrayal. 

My best friend’s mom had shown me clips from season 2 of Arrow back in 2015 but I was too into Avengers and X-Men to really bother. So once I saw TMNT2 I was intrigued. I didn’t have netflix so I couldn’t start from the beginning and I wasn’t at my friend’s house enough to watch it there.

April 7th last year my uncle, on my mom’s side, past away from a suicide brought on my drugs. My mom’s youngest brother, my uncle had been the middle child, was having a really hard time shortly after so we went over to his house so my mom could talk to him and guess what, they had netflix.

My cousins had apparently watched it and really liked it so I started it from season 1 and eventually a friend gave us her netflix password so I got to catch up. 

By season 2 when Moira died I was in tears. Not so much for Moira, though I did like her, but more for Oliver. I was very upset when Tommy died and I cried because I didn’t know that’s what was gonna happen and I just loved the friendship the two had, plus Tommy and Laurel were just too precious for words. However, I found myself crying for Oliver and mad at everyone who was mad at him. He didn’t go to his mom’s funeral. 

Not even a full two months previous I was dealing with that. I had never been to a funeral (or a viewing, don’t ask my aunt is weird) before and I was so upset and this was so fast. It was the first death of anyone I had been pretty close to. So of course when Oliver Queen, a character I was seeing bits of myself in, didn’t go to his mom’s funeral for the same reasons I almost didn’t attend my uncle’s, I was sobbing. 

Over time I became to love Laurel Lance. Her relationship with her little sister was a lot like mine with my younger sister. Oliver and Thea’s was kinda like it but they had such a huge age gap between them and the Lance’s were a lot more similar to what I had with my sister. I was Laurel and my sister was Sara. So when Laurel died of course I was crying because this female hero I had managed to come to love so much was gone. In the past I tended to like the guys more and had never related to a female this much ever. I still wish they hadn’t killed her off because she had come so far as a character. Even Black Siren has had some SERIOUS character development and she’s only been around for two seasons. 

Yet I haven’t gotten to what’s become the biggest part.

This past November my grandfather, on my dad’s side, died of a whole mess of cancers. I was so close to him and it’s still so hard to deal with. So much so I started crying once I got to this part. He meant a lot to me. He was like a second father and would have given me and my sister the moon if we had asked for it. We used to visit him and my grandmother every Thursday since I was old enough to walk. Very much like a second father to me. 

I am very grateful for Arrow being on Thursday nights because I have something to take my mind off the fact that this week we aren’t going to “Gram and Papa’s” that day and I can think about all the trouble Oliver is going to get himself into. 

I’m also very grateful for Stephen Amell and Juliana Harakavy for being two of the most positive people I see on my instagram feed. I can’t tell you how many Arrow fanpages I unfollowed for ship shaming and opinion shaming. Everyone is so negative yet Stephen, Juliana, and even Caity Lotz continue to inspire me in everything that I go through. I cried for poor Colton Haynes when his mother past away because I was still feeling that hurt myself. 

So if I am ever over protective of this show and it’s characters, here’s why. 

I also have some great friends I’ve met over the internet and in real life in this particularity hard time in my own life that have just helped me through so much.

When Everything Works

I don’t know if you guys knew this, but Hollywood is kind of shallow. If you’re a woman, regardless of your talent, intelligence, or drive, an awful lot of people are going to base their first and last impressions of you on your looks and body type. How many wildly talented women never got their shot because they didn’t wear a size zero?

Take Charlize Theron for example. Impossibly attractive, she was first noticed in 1996’s 2 Days in the Valley.* For several years, she appeared in a string of forgettable films. She took a risk in 2003 playing serial killer Aileen Wuornos in Monster. The role won her a well-deserved Academy Award, and her career changed radically. Why? Theron lit her image on fire by playing the unattractive Wuornos, and that weirdly enabled the film industry to take her seriously as an actor. She was always that talented, but something drastic had to be done.

It sucks, but let’s be real — the entertainment industrial complex can be mean to the guys, too. Take a look at the movie poster for 2007’s Knocked Up. It features a close-up shot of a schlubby-looking Seth Rogen and the tag line, “What if this guy got you pregnant?” Think about the casual cruelty on display. Despite that, Seth Rogen became a star, and he’s been able to build a career partially upon the foundation of that image.

Even now, in the age of #MeToo and body positivity, that shallowness still persists. The movie poster for Long Shot, starring Theron and Rogen, shows the two of them with the tagline, “Unlikely but not impossible.” It’s a real pity that, for a strong romantic comedy about two people falling for each other and getting past inaccurate images, the advertising has all the depth of a puddle.

We’re introduced to Fred Flarsky (Rogen), a crusading journalist at an alt-weekly. He’s infiltrated an online White Power group, and he takes his job so seriously that he’s willing to get a tattoo of a swastika. The truth matters deeply to Fred. That’s why it comes as such a shock to learn that his alt-weekly has been bought by Parker Wembley (Andy Serkis), a conservative media titan. Does he try to change things from within? Hell, no. He quits.

Fred’s pal Lance (O’Shea Jackson Jr.) gets it, and he takes Fred out on the town to drown his sorrows. They arrive at a glitzy fundraiser, where Fred sticks out like the sorest of sore thumbs. Perhaps that’s a good thing, since he attracts the attention of Charlotte Field (Theron). She remembers Fred. She was his babysitter, and she was significantly more passionate about the world then. Charlotte is also the Secretary of State under the narcissistic President Chambers (Bob Odenkirk), and she has a plan.

A former TV actor, Chambers has decided he won’t seek a second term, and instead wants the added prestige of becoming a movie star. But Chambers isn’t done yet, and it’s Charlotte’s job to travel the world gathering support for a massive environmental policy proposal. She sees an opening to use it as a springboard to launch her own campaign for president. While Charlotte polls well with voters, they feel she’s too stiff.

Running into Fred gives her another idea, and she offers him a job punching up her speeches. As they travel the globe, they get to know each other. He helps her to relax. She helps him to broaden his perspective on the world. They do drugs together. While something seems to be growing between them, Charlotte’s aide Maggie (June Diane Raphael) thinks it’s nothing more than a fling that needs to end as soon as possible. Are these two really falling in love?

There are two flavors of romantic comedy I dislike intensely. The first is “schlubby dude grows up and learns a lesson,” while the second is “they bicker continuously until they magically fall in love.” Let’s also bear in mind that many, many romantic comedies are neither particularly romantic nor particularly funny. Imagine how thankful I was that Long Shot gracefully sidesteps those hoary old tropes and is both funny and genuinely affecting.

Director Jonathan Levine has a particular talent for drilling into a particular genre while never forgetting that what we really care about is the relationships between the characters. In The Night Before, he made a genuinely funny comedy that examined how friendships are affected by time. His film Warm Bodies was a solid slice of zombie horror that has an unapologetically romantic worldview.

Here, he’s made a rom-com that nicely balances real emotion with some satisfyingly filthy humor. I appreciated that Charlotte’s function isn’t to help Fred become a grown-up. He’s already a successful journalist. The best relationships are ones where both parties complement each other. Charlotte helps Fred take his writing to the next level and expands his worldview. He helps her to look beyond her job, yet remains supportive of what she’s focusing on. Not only are they falling for each other, we see that they genuinely like each other.

As wonderful as it is to see two people fall in love, it’s just as wonderful that there’s an abundance of dick jokes. Dan Sterling and Liz Hannah have absolutely crammed their screenplay full of hilarious moments. They also know that humor can be used in different ways depending on the needs of the scene, and we see some moments played as straight comedy while also showing some lovely moments between two naturally witty people. That kind of balance isn’t easy to pull off, but Hannah and Sterling have done it here.

Rom-coms live or die based on the chemistry of the leads. Theron and Rogen have some honest-to-God, you-can’t-fake-this chemistry together. Over the years, Rogen has occasionally dipped his toe into more dramatic fare. While he’s playing a wiseassed stoner yet again, he’s gotten better as a performer and he can sell dramatic moments quite a bit better. As good as he is, Theron is absolutely outstanding. She doesn’t often get the chance to be funny, and she nails it. There’s a sequence where she’s asked Fred to get her extremely high. While she’s tripping balls, an international catastrophe occurs that she has to deal with. Watch her command of physical comedy and her ability to be funny and broad without going too big. At this point, I think Theron can basically do anything.

Long Shot isn’t perfect. At a little over two hours, it starts to wear out its welcome, and 15 minutes or so could have been comfortably trimmed. Yet that kind of criticism feels a little like nitpicking. Why should I look for flaws in something that made me so happy? Long Shot is more than just a dopey poster and a seemingly wheezy concept. You may not want to deal with the Avengers crowds right now, but trust me that this film is worth seeking out.

  *Yet her acting debut in Children of the Corn III: Urban Harvest remains ignored? For shame!
