thinking about modern au Kabru

ivy league college student, probably studying law and political science on a full scholarship. first time living away from Milsiril so he has to promise her, yes mom i’ll call you at least four times a week, no mom i don’t need your amex black card, yes mom the normal credit card is fine i need to learn how to budget like a Normal Person (it has a limit of $20k — that’s not normal Kabru).

Milsiril insists for a long time that she’ll just get him a house off campus so he can have his own space (aka a place she can drop by anytime and possibly live a few months out of the year just to be close to him) but Kabru puts his foot down and tells her the best way he’s gonna make friends is by living with other students (bye mom).

his floor in the coed dorms is the party floor and he always makes sure to invite everybody (his nightmare is accidentally leaving anyone out and having them think that he doesn’t like them). somehow it’s always a good time, everyone leaves with more friends than they came with, it never gets totally out of control, and plenty of girls who are interested in him (and a lot of guys too tbh) bring tons of baked treats so there’s always free food. Kabru is the RA’s favourite person to have in the building (even though Kabru himself is messy but most of the people he’s friends with are nice and clean up after themselves).

he has a porsche (Milsiril gift for his 16th bday) but he’s adamant about not driving it unless he absolutely has to (because he doesn’t wanna look like a douche). BUT he never says no when his friends ask for rides (so he ends up driving all the time anyway). he actually contemplates selling the porsche and going for a more practical car but Mickbell is like ‘dude you are not taking this away from me.’ Kabru sighs and decides to keep it because his friends (Mickbell) like being chauffeured around in a fancy convertible (Rin, Holm, and Dia don’t care, they’re just glad they don’t have to walk to the grocery store).

he’s probably on a casual texting basis with most of his professors and you know he’s going to all their office hours, grabbing beer with them just to keep chatting about life outside of school. and that’s how he winds up in some super secret faculty group chat where he’s now privy to all the college administration gossip.

Kabru is elected for student council during his freshman year and he’s probably the favourite to be sc president one day.

he doesn’t really date (gets too in his head about how he doesn’t wanna ruin any friendships) but he does hang out one on one with a lot of girls and treats them all really well. he probably goes so far out of his way to be platonic that he flies a little too close to the ‘Just Like One of the Girlies’ sun, he kinda forgets that most people interpret it as flirting coming from him. which leads to a few awkward conversations. people feeling led on, a few angry jealous boyfriends, scathing dms about him being a girl stealing homewrecker.

it’s such a nightmare for him and he needs it to end right now. so he begs Rin to ‘date’ him for a week or two and then publicly dump him just so the entire student body gets the message that he is Just A Friend.

Rin stares at him for a few seconds. then she laughs. she laughs and laughs. she laughs for a crazy long time. and then eventually she goes, ‘wow you’re an asshole, Kabru. no i won’t be your fake girlfriend. you’re gonna suffer and i’m going to enjoy it.’

and that’s when Kabru has a moment of enlightenment. ok yeah. asking for that is probably really selfish and mean. maybe he needs to think about girls’ feelings more and that’s maybe more important than his deep seated need to be liked, and when has Rin ever been wrong about anything.

he apologizes. and so begins one of the more serious talks he’s ever had with Rin about being okay with not being liked.

he thinks he can really turn over a new leaf. the whole ‘not worrying about what other people think’ thing goes pretty well — up until Kabru meets the aloof professor for his Monsters and Myths class who keeps forgetting and mispronouncing his name.

Kabru has never needed someone to like him So Bad, he needs Prof. Touden to like him as a matter of life and death, and he’s willing to look stupid for it (fails a midterm on purpose to justify begging for one on one tutoring)

Alicent who veils her hair during her day to day life, elegant laces and silks adorning her long ginger-brown hair, covering it completely at the Sept.

Alicent who wears dresses with long heavy skirts and always covers her elbows with billowing sleeves.

Alicent who conceals her silhouette with thick shaping garments. they also just helped her back during her pregnancies and taking care of kids (her servants recommended them so she'd have full range of motion and support)

Alicent who was stripped of her modesty, her dignity and sense of security whenever Viserys wanted her. stripped of it by her own father when he sent her to Viserys's chambers in a dress that didn't cover as much as she would have liked, especially when she visited a man with those (silent) instructions.

Alicent who lets her hair down around people she trusts. covering it around Rhaenyra after she abandoned her, a blow to Rhaenyra, a blatant "you hurt me and broke my trust". letting Criston see her hair after he becomes her sworn sword. covering in front of Viserys until he demands she stops. Alicent putting a little makeshift veil on her daughter, who wanted to look like her mum, promising it would protect her from how loud the world was.

Alicent who only trusts her closest servants to dress her, and even then insists on being in a full shift before they can come in.

Alicent who felt stripped bare while giving birth to her children.

little Alicent looking up to her mum who was also very modest, and spending her childhood playing in long skirts.

Alicent who wears shawls and scarves out in public or at events. Criston watches to make sure she remains properly covered. her hands fiddling with the patterns or tassels while she talks to others.

Alicent doing this with her kids:

Criston offering her his cloak when she's put in bad situations like sudden crowds or outings.

wearing flowy but opaque fabrics during the summers, looking ethereal and goddess-like with her layers skirts and sleeves.

the whole Larys situation being even more sickening.

all 3 of her sons being protective of her modesty alongside Criston, always offering their cloaks to her or standing to block her from the wind or wandering eyes. Aegon holding her veil in place when it's windy, Aemond placing a cloak over her in public, Daeron fiercely defending his mum from lusting glances or lingering stares.

Helaena continuing to veil with her mum when they go out, they love matching veils and trying ornate styles.

Alicent fixing her daughters veil in attempts to get it to stay in on dragon back. it doesn't. but they don't mind the extra bonding time none the less.

gold veils that literally make her look like she's dripping in gold.

tucking her babes in her shawls or holding them against her skirts that are practically swallowing them whole.

Alicent collecting layers. Ornate undergarments that cover her arms in gold and embroidered patterns, some almost like tapestries others more simple. undershirts that cover her neck, with "choker" patterns and sewn in jewels. modest nightgowns and robes made of the softest, most breathable fabrics in existence.

covering her face on holy days/days of importance.

charlie is so autistic coded it isn’t even funny. obscure special interests. doesn’t understand social cues or norms. you can never tell if he’s joking or serious. just “gets” music to the point he’s a genius with it. has to have his own psychological trauma explained to him so he can realize it’s trauma. same outfit 4/7 days of the week. safe foods are weird and also all he wants to eat. big feelings that he can’t process without a meltdown. vocal and physical stims. pattern recognition. doesn’t like physical affection. has meltdowns when overstimulated. loves routine and gets upset when his schedule is changed. it’s all autism babey.

I am deeply fascinated by White's fear.

I have no idea whatsoever why this boy believes he's dirty/filthy, or why he thinks Tee specifically would view him that way. The show has given us all but mere glimpses of his POV and none have managed to give me a concrete reason for it. But this is what makes it so interesting. Even with only 1 episode left, the writers can do wonders with this. Throughout the show, but especially in Ep11, we see White being pretty open about his attraction/love to Tee. He's the one who pursued him, who flirted with him, who went to visit him at his job everyday, who tutored him, who *kissed* him. Is this why he feels that way? It can't be, right? The boy is doing all this in public, it's not shame for his sexuality that's the issue. So, the other conclusion is that it's about sex. It makes him feel dirty, it makes him feel that *Tee* himself views him as dirty, even though he loves White and he loves having sex with White, something I'm sure White himself knows as well. Going back to Ep1, we do get some indication about White's fear, though it could be just me grasping at straws here:

1) During the first TeeWhite scene we got, White gets a hallucination of the masked murderer standing in the woods, watching them, while he's making out with Tee. He stops and says this:

Tee dismisses White's worries, saying everyone's inside the house so there's nobody to watch them, and White does this face:

and needs a few seconds to get back into it after they start kissing again. 2) When they return to the others and Top asks them if they had sex, White's reaction is this:

and later, when Top asks if he could participate too, White's reaction is this:

White doesn't really show evident discomfort, but he doesn't show indifference either. The main argument in favor of that is the fact that he appeared in front of others like this:

and after Top's comments, he is now like this:

He fixed his T-shirt in order for it to be tucked away in his pants, something he didn't even intend to do before Top's comments. He became self-conscious. 3) When the gang go to the CCTV room to find out where Por has gone, they stumble upon the TeeWhite scene of them kissing on the balcony. White's reaction is this:

White looks incredibly out of his depth and ashamed, mainly due to Top's attitude which is why he glances at his direction more than once. It's the most evident example we get in the series. Also, I find Tee's words here interesting. He says "My little one will cry, change the camera", meaning he knows other people knowing more about their sex life makes White feel embarrassed. Just a small detail that makes me curious. I believe it's due to example 3 that White gets this hallucination later in Ep2:

My main reason for this is the position. As many people have pointed out, it's at the place Tee mostly kissed him: his neck, spreading over his shoulder. All in all, I refuse to believe White is simply vain, especially since it's such a big fear of his that he has hallucinations about Tee feeling disgusted with him. It all just leaves me so puzzled. Just... White. Who are you?

Okay, so, making a re-watch of Trigun Stampede, and knowing Kenji Muto (Director) and Yoshihiro Watanabe (Producer) said something about the anime being an experiencie, and not wanting to make the characters say and explain everything (thus they want us reading between the lines), I noticed a stupid thing that I LOVED (probably someone already pointed it out but whatever).

This part where Meryl and Roberto split up from Vash, and he said to Wolfwood they were not friends, hurt a lot and left me very sad.

At first, I was disappointed. However, getting to know Vash more, I began to understand him. He always tries to distance himself from humans, even though he loves them so much, because they always end up getting hurt in some way as a result of his presence. So, yes, I understood why he said that. He was drawing a line. “If I don’t call them friends, they can’t get hurt”. Plus the fact that he’s 150 years old, so he probably sees these things with very different lens.

BUT. This part here. In episode 9, when Vash asks "about the others well fare" after the incident.

She calls them “his friends”.

At first, he is confused, because, as I said, he draws such a strict line in his mind, he can’t actually recognize them as such, at least consciously.

BUT HE DOESN’T DENY IT THIS TIME. AND HE SMILES WITH SOFTNESS IN HIS EYES.

I know what you did here, Studio Orange. I know it was intentional, these two conversations about friends. They are connected.

hold on i need to get a thought and emotions out. so with Welcome Home, there seems to be a before and an after. obviously, we're in the after. the website is the after. and if it turns out that the story we see, the one where shit hits the fan and the show is practically erased, then... that already happened. whatever horrors we see, we'll know that there is no saving them. there is no happy ending - it happened, and it's tragic. the show is doomed to end and be scrubbed away. if any of the characters are revealed to be dead/gone by the website, then when/if we see them at an earlier point, we'll Know

and there's a special kind of dread and horror in that for us, the audience.

The fact that Colin and Nate are such narrative foils for eachother. The amount of psychological damage they’ve done to eachother because of their own insecurities that they were projecting on the other.

Colin bullying Nate because Nate was perceived as “weak” and not fitting in with the traditionally masculine environment of football (while he himself did that to fit in with the very toxic environment that was the team at the beginning with Jamie leading the charge - and I could write an essay on the insecurities of Jamie Tartt) vs. Nate bullying Colin because he is not as skilled as other players on the team, he is not the name people recognize when talking about Richmond, he is not the star (while Nate feels like the least important member of the coaching team, he is constantly told by his dad that he will never amount to nothing even tho he is having a successful career at the club, he feels put aside by Ted after the arrival of Roy in the coaching staff to the point he snaps and goes to the dark side, joins Rupert at west ham, not seeing he is just the newest toy for Rupert to manipulate and eventually discard, falling into the trap of a narcissist just to feel valued, not realizing that Rupert does not value him, just the amount of damage he can do to Richmond by taking him away from there).

Both of their arcs so far have been about how their insecurities are influencing their lives, so I really hope we can see it evolve into them learning to manage them, learning to not be consumed by them, and to really grow away from them, with Colin fully being comfortable in his sexuality and Nate learning to see the worth in himself and coming back to the “light side” aka getting away from Rupert’s influence (and back to an healthy environment)

Basically I just want them both to have a happy ending (and to apologize to eachother about the nasty shit they have done)

because i'm predictable, what're bobby and chloe up to in the villain au? or how's the dynamic between sam and dogen since he's taken psychoisolation to the extreme?

Bobby's in a pretty similar position to the regular timeline - at least, at first glance. he's overworked and underpaid, constantly crunching to try and keep on top of the ever-growing mountain of paperwork his superiors keep handing down to him.

but i think the trajectory of his character looks pretty different? he never really met Raz at Whispering Rock. he never got humbled by him, never had to suffer the embarrassment of his spot as top dog being yanked away by some new kid... but he also never really got to go through a lot of the character growth from their ensuing rivalry? he's definitely mellower than he was as a kid, but he's got a lot of unresolved issues bubbling under the surface - anger problems, poor self-esteem, a tendency to lash out at authority figures...

he still really believes in the work he's doing, and wants the Psychonauts to be the force for good he knows they can be. but he's carrying a growing burden of stress and exhaustion, stuck in a toxic work environment that's more likely to change him (or just make him snap) than he is to change it.

his only real friend at the Motherlobe is Chloe. Chloe is... well! again, first-glance, not that much has changed. she works the same job in the Motherlobe's engineering and aerospace department, and she still gets to pursue her childhood fascination with space.

but the harsher work culture and the more pragmatic, efficient environment have exacerbated some of her less personable traits. she's blunt, rude, and almost fanatically devoted to her work, to the exception of basically everything else. her workplace safety standards are lax, and her ethics laxer. she'd sell the Psychonauts out for one corn chip if she thought it'd get her better funding for her pet projects
