rewatching dune (1984) which i've seen a handful of times, fallen asleep during the desert scenes more than once, and have a fondness for but also haven't watched it in at least a decade. i want to watch the new movies but wanted to refresh my memory on this movie again first

i think what was so effective for me in this movie was how memeable it was. i read the book and for some reason it was a slog for me, but that plus the movie really drilled these phrases into my daily thoughts. the sleeper must awaken, arrakis dune desert planet, fear is the mind killer, the spice must flow etc.

so i wonder if one of the main issues with this movie that people have is how much it relies on voiceover. i don't know about the complaints, just that it's generally not liked

i remember the heart plug pull vividly but the implied sexual assault while he's bleeding out by the baron, not so much. the gays are evil, guys

i feel like jessica and rachael from blade runner (1982) occupy the same place in my brain. another movie that put me to sleep a lot, with that afternoon sun and the smoke. knocks me right out

i had to go find clips of dean stockwell as al in quantum leap because i was so sure his voice was so much lower in that compared to this. and yes, it is! good job, brain

duke: "damn the spice!" *gasp*

you know, it's been a long ass time since i watched this. and the constant voiceover of characters voicing their thoughts is really getting heavy handed. show not tell, amirite 🤪 maybe it's because i know the story already, but for the most part i feel like the voiceover specifically to the character thoughts wasn't even explaining anything that wasn't already expressed in the scene anyway most of the time

the effects were nice having the sand blowing off, really helped give it scale

and now paul's gotta deal with the itty bitty flying dick of death!

so they make the bad guy fat with visible illness on his face, a murdering gay rapist and he wears nail polish. oh, and red hair. really hitting it out of the park

i think about this poison gas tooth thing on the regular

captain picard shouting "long live duke leto" while holding the pug and rushing into battle, i started cackling

for whatever reason, the thumpers are what always captured my imagination. i think i just like the sounds.

anyway, walk without rhythm and it won't attract the worm how did i not realize until this very moment that song was a reference to dune! haha. walk without rhythm is such a strange turn of phrase

i think this must be past the point when i usually fell asleep watching this. i know i've seen it all the way through more than once but apparently milking a cat???? didn't leave an impression. also this just never comes up again. but bro made it to the end of the movie so i guess he was successful in milking it

the truly unfortunate green screening is consistently the worst effect, a shame

pacing is all over the place. it was going okay but then paul's making out with chani, his sister is born and is like 8 years old now (heyo baby alicia witt), we gotta zoom through 2 years of war and boop boop now paul's drinking the blue water and going where no woman can go while they all bleed from their face parts

space cigarettes, no problem. but then they gotta go try to make this glowing golden thing and it's terrible

would be remiss to not include the dick shaped harkonnen ships but i ran out of images ;<

this big showdown with the emperor etc i am hanging on by a thread to not fall asleep/close :p truly lost the plot. way too much worm action, way too long of boring repetitive action sequences

using my image last slot for having the baby kill the baron/send him on his way to become a worm snack

LOL the pug is in this big fremen gathering! captain picard managed to survive and keep the dog alive! good god will this ever end. now we're gonna have the world's slowest knife fight with sting

oh my god. that took forever. ok well, i can see why this movie has put me to sleep more than once and panned. and there's some really memorable and interesting things about it, and i think it goes fairly strong (with some issues like excessive voiceover) for the first 2/3 or so. but oof. i definitely liked it more 20 years ago :p anyway, i'm glad i watched it again so i could take off the rose tinted glasses before watching the new movies

Sci Fi Month Dune 1984

So @minimumheadroom requested I review David Lynchs Dune,a film which is being talked about now due to a new Dune being in theaters

For the record havent read the whole book, but have seen Denis Villenuves Dune part 1 ,and the first episode of the Dune 2000 miniseries (Which I also intend tio review ).ALso am reviewing theatrical cut

This 1984 film follows Paul Atredies(Kyle Maclachlan ) whose father Duke Leto Atredies (Jurgen Prochnow ) has been appointed as head of production of The Spice,the most valuble substance in the universe,on the Planet Arrakis ,as part of a ploy by the jealous Emperor Shaddam IV (Jose Ferrer) and the Baron Vladimir Harkonen (Kenneth Mcmillian ) to wipe out the threat of the popular Duke Leto ,but this attempt to erradicate House Atredies,pushes Paul to join forces with the Freman ,the people of Arrakis,and possibly fufil the prophecy of being a messiah figure.....I think I got that right

So this film was a notorious flop that its director,David Lynch has disowned and by some it is seen as a mess of a movie ......And yeah they arent wrong .Its a two hour adaptation of a very long book full of a lot of characters and in a world that is very unfamiliar to avagage joe audiences who thought this would be a typical space opera and directed by a rather oddball director in the form of David Lynch .The film scared off typical audiences due to how confusing it can be and die har fans were equally baffled by some changes.....However due to home video and TV airings it gained a cult following of Sci Fi loving wirdos that apprecitate the film....I am one of those weirdos .Yeah if you were expecting "Dune 1984 sucks" you are gonna be disappointed ,I ADORE this piece of insanity

Its not a perfect film at all ,but if you are in the right headspace it is entertaining .Visually the film is stunning from the costumes to the giant sand worm effects .Cast wise the film is stacked,I actually cant talk about most of the cast cause there are so many characters so here are the 10 that stood out to me

Kyle Machlachlan as Paul Atredies -I need to finish the miniseries and see Dune Part 2 butI actully think Machlachlan is my favorite Paul,for being his first movie he commands the camera

Patrick Stewart as Gurney Halleck -The scene stealer of the film,cast by mistake ,Stewarts performance showcases Gurneys loyalty and gruffness while still making him a likeable presence .Also he runs into battle with a PUG

Sian Phillips as the REverand Mother Mohahiam ,leader of the Benne Gessert,this actress is just a pro at playing creepy villainesses and the Bon Jabar scene where Paul sticks his hand in a box of pain and cant remove it or else she will kill him with a poison needle is so memorable

Dean Stockwell as Dr Yuewh ,the best Dr Yuewh nailing the conflicted man who feels he must betray the man he respects in order to kill the man who killed his wife

Kenneth Mcmilian as the Baron Vladimir Harkonen .Now the Baron isa bit of a basebreaker,cause well ....David Lynch is the one guy who is like"Hey that obese perverted manipulator who wants to bang his nephew and uses a gravity belt to walk....Not repulsive enough " and gives us a cackling boil covered loonatic who flys around like a Peter Pan from your nightmares .Now I understand the backlash.....But for me he is SO Vile ,so despecable,and so over the top ,I find him hilarious .Like I will admit ,I prefer the other versions of the Baron but what makes me enjoy this take ,is the balls to the wall over the top deranged glee Kenneth Mcmillian gives.He is not phoning it is,he is tasked with playing a deseased deranged despicable monster and he pulls it off .It is one of my favorite examples of scene chewing ever

Brad Douriff as Piter De Vries -A small role but a memorable one as the Barons right hand man,Douriff just knows how to play a creepy villain

Linda Hunt as Shaddout Mapes,not much to say she is just very wonderful as this mysterious housekeeper and it impressive for her third movie role

Jose Ferrer as the Emperor.....Is not a good performance,but I kind of love seeing Jose Ferre this award winnig talented actor look baffled by everything around him

Sting as Feyd is weird cause he is technically one of the main villains....But he doesnt do anything till his memorable final fight with Paul,but between Sting sneering in the corner and his memorable steam room scene,he leaves an impression

Jurgen Prochnow as Duke Leto brings a nice fatherly quality and nobility.I like all three actors who have played the Duke ,but Prochnow strikes me as the most noble

I dunno,I find the film very qoutable ('FATHER THE SLEEPER HAS AWAKENED " being a favorite as is "Moods a thing for cattle and love play,not fighting ") ,I think it looks good ,cast is mostly pretty good ,Totos soundtrack kicks ass and hey its Dune,even if not the best adaptation its still a great story.Also on an ironic note,I do enjoy titlting my head at some of the Lynchian changes like the cat milking

If I have a complaint ,its that I prefer the first half of the film to the second ,as it kind of devolves int a bucnh of fight montages and frankly I dont like that they paint Paul as a pure hero when that not what he is

Oh and to answer @minimumheadroom's questions:

I do think the film couldve benefited from being two films and hottest character is Gurney cause Patrick Stewart is DASHING

Overall,....If you hate the movie you hate it ,but I think it has both elements of genuine quality and ironic cheesyness that make it a good watch

Shiva Baby and Judas and the Black Messiah! Both of them! They’re both great movies that you should totally check out but neither of them came out in 2021. I have decided that.

The Power of the Dog: There’s a lot of mentions of smell.

Pig: We all know Nicholas Cage never bathes because he’s afraid of water.

A Quiet Place Part 2: The thing that no one ever talks about when it comes to apocalypses is how awful everything is going to smell.

The Suicide Squad: Because of the rats, I guess.

In the Heights: Heat waves? No air conditioning? Everyone in this film is sweating buckets. They sing a whole song about how hot they are at one point.

The Last Duel: Medieval times smelled like, really, really bad. I’m not putting the Green Knight because of all the mist and stuff.

Dune: The Harknonen mud stuff, the desert, the worms. This film probably smells like a thousand different things and only a quarter of them are pleasant.

Resident Evil Welcome to Raccoon City: I’m going to assume there are zombies in this movie. Well, zombies don’t smell well. I mean, they don’t smell good. They also don’t smell well either.

Godzilla versus King Kong: Godzilla probably smells okay, but King Kong? Nope.

Coda: This movie is about fishers, and fish smell disgusting. I’m doing this one over Luca because Luca also features a lot of pasta. 

And the award goes to...

The Power of the Dog! This movie probably smells absolutely putrid. First, we got Benedick Cumberass. This dude goes on a whole schpeel about how he doesn’t ever wash. Then their are the horses, the cows, and all the stuff they excrete. Then theirs the anthrax, which probably smells disgusting, and the animal autopsies, and just the fact that movie takes place in 1925, when air conditioning was in it’s infancy. This movie is not only the smelliest movie of the year, but it’s also probably the sweatiest. And I think that says a lot about something.

The Stupid Things We Do

Really, this should be “The Stupid Things I Do”, but sometimes I like to pretend that I am not a total moron who is completely alone in ridiculous misadventures that should never have happened.

First of all, several weeks ago, I fractured a metatarsal in my left foot. I say I fractured it. Mr GF  fractured it by derping about and jumping on the bed, landing directly on my foot when I was resting my left ankle because I’d already sprained it due to my dodgy hypermobile-but-also-arthritic joints. (Namely, my foot forgot how to foot when it was supposed to be a foot. Mr GF thought I’d fallen down an invisible hole when we were at Ely Market.) 

Have I forgiven him? Absolutely. Will I ever let him forget this? He should be so lucky.

Anyway, in my “ignore it and it will go away” quest, about three weeks ago I did something to the tendons in my right knee as I tried to overcompensate my dodgy left footing, and this has only gotten worse since.

And so of course Mr GF and I went on a 3 mile walk down Brancaster beach today. And now both my knee and ankle are swollen and bruisy. Almost like I probably shouldn’t have done that. (I don’t think falling down a sand dune helped.)

On the plus side, we did get to see two pugs, one very eager sausage, one big Old English Sheepdog with a Very Orange Ball, George the Unbelievably Hype BorkBork with his friend (we didn’t see them up close, but OHBOY could we hear them and I love George and his zest for life), one giant staffy doing rollies in the sea, two giant floofy boys, one longboye, one miniature longboye, one droopy hound...

Oh, and Mr GF learned that I can identify dog breeds from a remarkable distance, even without my glasses, and he now owes me a lot of money and refuses to acknowledge the bets that he wagered and lost were even made in the first place.

The other stupid thing I did today doesn’t really count as a stupid thing, but both ticks one thing off of the ol’ bucket list and counts as fanfic research (Byakuya, the things I do for you). Unfortunately, when posed as ‘fanfic research’ does strike one as somewhat... silly. 

Anyway, I have now tried oysters. I’m glad I did because they were not what I was expecting (much meatier and more substantial for a start), and anything I would have otherwise written would have been wrong. I’d definitely have them again, but would strongly advise against trying them if you don’t like shellfish. Oh, and chewing is the right thing to do. I am not a total heathen, thank you very much, Mr GF.

Not that I thought the 84' Dune was all that hot, but I would de-ball myself for those vintage figures

I ran into those sweet Dune toys after I looked up the Dune tag after seeing a post of people complaining about the Lynch movie on here, personally I am a HUGE fan of his version-- there’s nothing else quite like it. Me and (soon to be #1 Dad)-- James Stokoe, would watch it like people watch Rocky horror - high fiving whenever the “the sleeper must awaken” hand shows up. 

I love the weird whisper voice overs and the sexy sex princess and Patrick Stewart holding a war pug in the middle of a war.

I wonder if recent sentiment is a combination of people being excited about the new Denis Villeneuve helmed Dune (Which I’m looking forward to, I liked his Blade Runner and I thought his Arrival was fantastic)  and the Jordorowski movie -- Which I feel pretty critical of-- It’s really easy to call another movie shit when you wen’t able to make your version. Maybe that’s a good lesson for all art. Even if flawed something actually existing is always a step up from it not existing. (anyway thanks for the message, I think I just wanted to talk about liking Lynch’s Dunneeeeeee)

- none of these people have ever just said a sentence normally in their lives

- does not convey the fact that paul is FIFTEEN for like 2/3 of the book and like 18 or 19 at the end

Weekend Wrap Up and Highlights: Cape Cod, Seashells, Pug Birthdays and Disney +

Having a long weekend is about the greatest gift anyone could ever get! Seriously… it’s like the best. Pajamas, movies, cooking at home, crafts, naps and just plain good ol’ relaxation!

We had a bunch of that this weekend, which was incredibly awesome and needed. But on Sunday we took a 2.5 hour drive down to the Cape to have a lunch date with my mom’s high school best friend and her daughter. It was such a nice afternoon to spend with these two special ladies and we all had such a great time and a lot of laughs and memories from my mom’s younger years. We even got to read through their 1954 high school yearbook and listen to some great stories about all the shenanigans they used to get into! This was about the coolest thing ever to my kids, since all 3 of them are obsessed with 50s music and beg daily for us to purchase a Nash Rambler. Funny little things… they know all the words to pretty much every song. In fact, as a side note, as they were playing yesterday, they took the Alexa in there and I could hear them jamming out to 50s songs. It’s just the cutest thing I’ve ever seen!

After lunch (and chasing the 20+ turkeys out of the yard who were eating the bird seed), we took a ride down to Nauset Beach. Now, let me tell you, I haven’t been to this beach since I was probably 4 years old so it’s been quite some time. And after getting there and walking on the sand, I could remember bits and pieces from when we went there when I was younger.

Being that it was only about 50 degrees, there was not much going on and the people were sparse. But that gave us plenty of time to explore, hunt for rocks and shells and enjoy watching the seals play in the waves. It was chilly and windy, but nobody seemed to mind since they were having such a ball looking at for all different kinds of treasures!

Such a fun day and we’re looking forward to going back again to do more exploration and digging in the dunes!

Yesterday we also celebrated our oldest pug’s birthday. Frances Llewellyn Poncherello Adamy turned 13 years old! Hard to believe that she is in fact that old, and 91 in dog years! But she toddles around, snorting and coughing, enjoying plenty of belly rubs and attention every day! She’s a good old girl and we adore every little roll on her fat little root beer barrel body!

Finally, it’s the day we’ve all been waiting for! Disney streaming service has finally arrived and my kids (and husband) could not be more excited. They’ve been anticipating this day for WEEKS! Both my boys absolutely love Star Wars, so having that be available to watch is certainly going to be something else for them.

This morning, as my middle schooler was getting ready for the bus, she left my little guy a note to remind him:
