Hi! Do you have any advice for how to decide what feedback to action from critique partners?

I'd say, whether it is feedback from a critique partner, OR an agent, OR an editor: If you are hearing it in person, just be an active listener, take notes, whatever. If you get a letter or notes on the ms, perhaps look at them and put them away for a bit. DON'T get defensive.

That is most people's first instinct -- it's NATURAL to want to defend your work, or to feel like YOU are being attacked, because this is something really close to your heart and showing other people can be like baring your soul, so if they are like "this isn't working" you might be all YOU JUST DON'T GET IT or whatever. Don't!

Let feedback marinate. DON'T think about it for a day, or a week, especially if it stings. DON'T rush to change everything the person said. When you feel like you have enough emotional distance that you can give it good consideration, do so.

Think about what KIND of feedback it is. Are they saying that one specific thing doesn't work (this paragraph is clunky, or this word is weird, for example)? Because that's easy enough.

Is it something broader? (Like, the voice doesn't ring true for the age of the character, or this dialogue doesn't feel authentic, or whatever)? That might be something to dig in on, but it probably won't happen in an instant. But at least it's something to consider, and in future, if you do work on it, perhaps your asks of a critique partner could be specific to THAT issue. ("When you read this, can you keep in mind VOICE in particular?" etc).

Is it something structural? (Like, this isn't starting in the right place?) Well, think about the goal for your story. IS it starting in the right place? (PROBABLY NOT, to be honest, this is the MOST common problem I see in workshops! Lots of authors need a chapter or so to kind of "warm up" -- and that first chapter ends up as all-buildup and exposition and voice, but the actual STORY doesn't start until later!)

Basically, parse out the feedback into buckets of "easy whoopsies and should deffo be fixed" -- "character problems" -- "potential plot/structure problems" etc. And measure them against what it is you are TRYING to do. Some of it will probably resonate, and you'll decide it's important to tackle.

But SOME of it will be a matter of, like, "OK, yes, I will say that this bit of business doesn't seem important, but it WILL come in later and be very important, so it stays."

And still other feedback will be something where they have identified a potential problem -- a stumbling block to the reader -- but their proposed solution doesn't work for you. Maybe there's ANOTHER way to solve that problem. "Chapter eight seems to come out of nowhere -- consider deleting?" -- well, that doesn't mean you have to GET RID OF chapter eight if you love it and think it is necessary -- but it MIGHT mean that it does indeed seem to come out of nowhere. So perhaps you resolve it by seeding the information the reader will need to understand it earlier, or by taking the events of chapter eight and moving them, or by consolidating it with parts of chapter nine, or WHATEVER. It doesn't matter that you haven't done the exact thing they suggested - it matters that a random reader won't reach that chapter and say "WTF????"

Ultimately, not all feedback is GOOD feedback. So, like, as long as you have given it due consideration, if you decide it really doesn't work for you and your story, you don't have to implement it. It's YOUR book, not their book!

(And also -- not all critique partners are created equal. If somebody truly seems to be bouncing off all your work and you just don't feel that they "get it" at all, perhaps it's time to find a new partner or group?)

Beck - The Information: Review

Switching it up from FFTB updates, mainly because I don’t have enough ideas for God is in the Radio. Beck has always been on my radar, but I never got around to listening to any of his music in-depth. I have a friend who has been a fan of his earlier stuff, and he would often put a few Beck songs into the queues of music we listen to when playing games together. I usually liked what I heard, but I didn’t actually listen to a Beck album on my own until about a year ago. 

I chose The Information on a whim, and it completely blew me away. The complexity and depth and feel of this album was far beyond what I was expecting. It makes sense, given that Nigel Godrich (producer of every Radiohead album after the first two) produced and mixed it. Every time I listen, I hear something new, something that I didn’t notice before.

Last time I did one of these, I feel like I wasn’t very coherent. I’m going to try to keep my thoughts together as much as I can.

Elevator Music - 8/10

What a start. You instantly are sunk into the feeling of the album, and with a beat that you can’t resist knocking your head to. There are like 5 different lines of percussion in the background but it’s mixed well and doesn’t sound cluttered. Vocals sound great, are mostly nonsense, but that’s okay. Every few lines there’s some kind of change-up to keep things interesting. Fragments of a third verse, vocal melody, and an ending that sounds like the song is breaking a little bit. This happens a few more times on the album.

Think I’m in Love - 6/10

Instantly hitting you with a very infectious bassline. I will say, that this song isn’t my favorite. Doesn’t really do much with the instrumentation compared with Elevator Music. This seems to be the designated “radio single”. The bridge is nice, though. Very nice strings there. The strings also come back in the outro, which I had forgotten about.

Cellphone’s Dead - 9/10

This song is probably the thematic centerpiece of the album. I absolutely love it. It has two distinct phases that it switches between effortlessly, several times. Beck’s flow here is flawless, especially during the second verse. That transition is water-tight. One by one, I’ll knock you out. The synth and piano combining, somehow. Eye of the sun, listen to that low string. This build-up is absolutely incredible. Just get lost in it. Another broken outro

Strange Apparition - 7/10

Beck’s country side comes out a little here. This song is driven by cowbell-infused percussion, slammed piano chords, and a careless acoustic guitar. One thing that you may also notice is a very nice synth line in the background. I especially like how the second chorus is sung a register higher than the first one. After that, the song shifts into a much more minimal sound and slower tempo. The acoustic wins out over the piano, and Beck really pushes his own voice.

Soldier Jane - 9/10

This may be my favorite song on the album. The drumming is spotless and that low sawtooth synth in the background really gives this song a unique feeling. Then one of the the best basslines I’ve ever heard comes in. Some kind of massive chord plays in the background, it sounds like heaven coming to Earth. The chorus is perfect. During the second verse, so much more interesting instrumentation is being layered on. Then, the buildup. The bassline gets even better and this awesome sense of scale is built upon. The conventional instruments fade out, and heaven blows your face through your skull.

Nausea - 7/10

First of all the complete lack of transition from Soldier Jane is absolutely hilarious. This song couldn’t be more different. An angrier flow and punchy percussion working alongside the bass. Some strange noises and vocal samples permeate the rest of the song. An ending so abrupt you think the song broke.

New Round - 7/10

A breather. Very soft vocals with a delay effect that really comes together on the “chorus”. Lullaby synth notes every once in a while. Is it comforting, or depressing? I couldn’t tell you. Very nice outro. What? Dinner time, yeah.

Dark Star - 9/10

Holy hell, the atmosphere of this song is beyond my ability to describe. I don’t even know if this is a bassline. I just know that it’s completely perfect. ESPECIALLY the transition into the chorus. The flow here is dark as night. In the second chorus the song shows the last ace up its sleeve; the string section. I am a total sucker for string sections tastefully implemented into modern sounds, and this is the best example I have ever hear of that. What an unbeatable groove.

We Dance Alone - 6/10

This is one of the songs that my friend would play the most often. Maybe because of that, it feels a little burnt-out for me. I feel like Dark Star did a better job with this vocal style, and the instrumentation doesn’t really evolve that much. I do like the way the vocals are kind of swimming through the chorus, and the bridge is a neat change-up. But there’s just too much of this song that is just repeated.

No Complaints - 7/10

This is probably the song that made me listen to The Information in particular. Heard it on some kind of “radio” thing, either Spotify or GPM. It’s a nice little acoustic singalong about the disenfranchisement with modern life. Love the lyrics on this one, and the chorus is very catchy. 

1000BPM - 7/10

Now here’s a strange one. Almost a straight-up rap song with a very eccentric flow. Abrasive, glitched percussion. The gltichiness starts to infect Beck’s vocals after a while, distorting them beyond recognition.

Motorcade - 7/10

Basically an unnerving version of New Round. A plucked main guitar line and a softer vocal melody. But there are a few building electronic moans in the background that sound very off. Especially during the spoken-word part in the bridge. A tapped synth note begins distorting around itself, and what sounds like filtered feedback starts drowning everything else out. 

The Information - 7/10

Almost a combination of No Complaints and Motorcade. A simple verse-chorus structure that begins to have some oddness creep into it. The drums are just a little bit too intense, which adds to the slight feeling of unease. The background vocals sighing every once in a while is a strange touch. A very weird outro. I recommend turning your volume down until the next song starts. No reason.

Movie Theme - 8/10

Such a nice way to end the album, after all that strangeness. This almost 16-bit synth wraps around you in a very comforting way. The vocals are appropriately soft. It just feels like a warm blanket. Various sounds and instruments continue layering as the song progresses. Listen to the voice on the radiowave / Somebody needs you, somebody who’s far away.

The Horrible Fanfare (6/10) / Landslide (8/10) / Exoskeleton (3/10)

Movie Theme is the real ending of the album. I treat this 10-minute song as a kind of collection of three B-sides. Horrible Fanfare is an interesting, creepy instrumental with a Dark Star-esque flow and no chorus. It samples Cellphone’s Dead and only lasts just over 2 minutes. The transition into Landslide is very nice. A bassline similar to Black Tambourine, a song off of Beck’s previous album. The chorus for this section is honestly really good. Satisfying lyrics and melody, and the closest thing to a guitar solo on the album. After this is about 5 minutes of Beck playing Swans. Eerie and ambient instrumentation and a strange, sampled conversation. Cellphone’s Dead comes back again. There’s also a part at about 7 minutes that sounds really similar to one of the menu tracks for Killing Floor 2. 

Alright, hopefully that was more coherent. Overall thoughts; I wish Fanfare/Landslide/Exoskeleton were separated onto their own, on a side project or B-side. Landslide honestly could have been its own song. Otherwise, I think this album is Beck’s best work, and an album I am unlikely to ever forget. On a scale of “No complaints but it’s overrated, that’s for sure”, to “Don’t be afraid, take your heart out of its shell”, The Information gets a “Little worse for wear but wearing it well.”

Music Review: Queens of the Stone Age - Villains (Vinyl)

We need to go ahead and start this off by saying that Queens of the Stone Age is most likely my absolute favorite band and has been on that level to me for over about 9 years. I’ve seen them live 6 times and have made a kind of goal for myself to see them at least 10 times before I’m done. They’ve influenced me and they’ve essentially guided me along without actually realizing it. I’ve listened to all of their albums over and over and over. This album was definitely heavy anticipation for me and apparently a boat load of other people, and QotSA fans alike.

The Basic Facts:

Recorded in the span of January to March 2017, released in August of 2017.

The album featured Mark Ronson as producer, which was a staunch shift away from the regular circulation of producers and other musicians within the same realm as Queens.

The first Queens album to not have a definite feature from another artist, breaking away from the general tradition they had established for many albums prior.

With 9 tracks, it has the lowest numbered track list of any of their albums.

Debuted at number 3 on the Billboard 200 chart.

The marketing campaign behind the new album was incredibly similar to the marketing behind Era Vulgaris, a previous album of theirs, even featuring Bulby, the previous “mascot” for the band during the Era Vulgaris years. The marketing campaign presented a few videos released over time and of course, the singles behind the band, but it needs to be pointed out that when the album was released, they uploaded the rest of the album on YouTube, giving a free outlet for consumers to get ahold of.

The Tracks:

There are LOT of hitters on this album, despite there only being 9 tracks on the album, and Queens like to make the point of all the songs having a singular power to them and never really having any “filler tracks”; this album is no change.  It starts off with Feet Don’t Fail Me. The name alone sets the badass tone for this song and the rest of the album to come. It starts off with the basic Queens of the Stone Age flair with an elongated intro hitting off with reverb and psychedelic undertones before blasting off into one of the best grooving movements the Queens have ever done. Its running, vibing and consistent along with his croon. It shuffles into a disco-esque breakdown which is basically centered mostly around the choppy breaks and Homme’s singing before dropping off for the finale. Definitely one of the best openers they’ve ever had for an album and, to be honest, I might receive some flack for it, but Turnin’ on the Screw is the only opener of theirs that I feel is as grooving but just a bit stronger. Nonetheless, absolutely fantastic. 

The next track, The Way You Used to Do, was the first single released from the album and the most standoffish on the album, for sure. It has a strong swing feel to the entire track which exemplifies the strength of Homme’s vocals which shine strongest on this track in comparison to the instrumentation on the track. Featuring a prominent usage of the 3 guitar approach the Queens had been building, especially during the ...Like Clockwork days, and is helped by the rhythm of the swing and the thundering of Jon Theodore’s drumming.

Domesticated Animals is the name of the third track on the album and the biggest thing I’ve noticed since the album has been released, is the general consensus that this song is the best on the album. I can’t help but point out that the instrumentation is very reminiscent of Era Vulgaris, their 5th album and my favorite Queens albums, and sounds very similar to I’m Designer leading me to call it “I’m Designer Jr.” or “I’m Designer Part Deux”. Despite the slight satire that I give the track, it’s very, very strong on the album and definitely one of the betters on the album. It has a chromatic, ascending approach to the main riff and leaves an openness for Homme to sing comfortably in. This builds until there’s a breakdown which eventually ends the song, somewhat giving a storyline feeling with the singing have a back and forth with Homme and the background singing. This reminds me of the work that Homme had recently done with Iggy Pop on the Post Pop Depression project. 

The fourth track on the album is Fortress, which is apparently a track that Homme had written specifically for his kids. Its nothing too incredibly special and probably the weakest track on the album, but that’s giving a lot of negative credit, considering the track is actually a strong track on its own but is only really weak in comparison to the rest of the album which, as I’ve stated, is full of a lot of hitting tracks. It’s a rather basic track in movement but gives it the Queens approach. I’ve had people compare it to Foo Fighters in the way its a regular riff that essentially builds more and more pieces to the track as it moves. The difference being that, although, it’s a general riff, it doesn’t really sound like the riff itself; it gives off a separate vibe, to say the least.

Head Like a Haunted House. My favorite on the album. It definitely sounds like a mixture of the Cramps and the Dead Kennedys in both the way the guitars shift together and the bass / drum combo. The biggest jump out of the influence train, is Homme’s vocal again which have, of course, become one of the strongest traits on the album similar to the approach of ...Like Clockwork. Its ridiculously driving, crooning, dark and punk. I love it death. The best thing to say about it is to give it a listen, It’s that good.

The sixth track on the album follow this term that I’ve heard Homme use before: “Battleship Song”. It’s basically a song that exceeds 6 minutes. That 6 minute approach general gives a song enough time to give a strong shift and leave on a memorable note. Each Queens song generally have at least one Battleship Song and this track is definitely the Battlehsip song. It uses a boat load of synths and keyboards and use the guitars as an accent piece but build into the chorus which consist of an addition of horns and powerful stacked vocals and instrumentation. There’s a section at the end that I like to refer to as “Sexy Sax” which features a powerful saxophone solo by James King.

As the 7th track, Hideaway hits in a section of the album that’s pivotal. There’s already been a  number of strong tracks and the album needs shift especially after the amazing buildup in Unreborn Again. I consider it the only other somewhat weak track on the album only because it seems as though they didn’t really give this one enough time. In sound, it reminds me of sections of I Appear Missing, but in approach, it reminds me of River in the Road, if you stripped half of the overdubs away. It sounds amazing, regardless, but still doesn’t have the well rounded and fluid sound of the other tracks. 

The album assuredly takes off once The Evil Has Landed hits. It’s VERY throwback to the sound of Them Crooked Vultures in the riff approach but still has that bounce and hit of the Queens. It shifts around quite often but still fits into its own cracks and never moves too far out to hurt itself. As the other Battleship Song on the album, it breaks 6 minutes mostly because of an ending that blasts out of nowhere towards the end delivering a pounding, repetitive, punk style riff that builds into a strong, Queens / Homme slide guitar solo that’s probably my favorite instance on the entire album. 

The reason for the name of the album is the 9th track: Villains of Circumstance. Previously performed by Homme once before during a charity concert in a somewhat different version. It has a slow, quiet verse hitting with echoing guitar stabs and a moving bassline that build into a faster, bouncier chorus that fits wonderfully into the mix of ...Like Clockwork. 

The Cons:

I’ve somewhat pointed out the smaller cons on the album while going through the tracklist such as, Fortress being centered around a generic riff and Hideaway sounding like it was dropped as a halfway track. But there are a few other moments in the album that are worthy of being pointed out. The first being the lyrics on some of the tracks. For instance, in Domesticated Animals, during the main buildup that the entire song moves into, and depends on, the lyrics are relatively bland and not as powerful as the instrumentation played during that portion: “I’ll tell you where the gold is. It’s in the ground. You wonder where’s the freedom? It’s in the lost and found. Still not found.” This is in staunch comparison to the other strong tracks by Queens that have utilized wicked lyricism. The only other strong con that I can give the album is located in the production. This complaint isn’t really valid, in my opinion though, because the production was the intention of the band and fits the sound they were looking for from the getgo. Its the claustrophobic sound that they were looking for and hired Ronson on board for because he has a prominent usage of claustrophobic mixing but gives the clarity a fitting. 

Now it’s the 7th album by a band that’s been around for just shy of 2 decades. This album isn’t breaking any barriers that the band hasn’t already hit before, yet they show that this isn’t a lacking point in the band and that they don’t really drop a bad album, they just simply keep up the good work, having some heavy hitters along the way. This album definitely fits into a kind of trilogy of Era Vulgaris, ...Like Clockwork and Villains. The shift in sound, the movement in lyrics and plainly the progression of the albums.

Now I know that I specifically put that this as a vinyl review as well as a review of the album itself, so I try to review the album and then the vinyl along with the packaging. I forgot to implement this with the review of The Smell of Female - The Cramps and that the vinyl, as well as the packaging, helped move the rating of the album from 7 /10 to 8 /10 and how sometimes, the physical aspect of an album makes the album a little bit better, in my honest opinion. The packaging for this album is pretty funky, in a good way, I guess. Although it has only 9 tracks, its pressed onto heavyweight vinyl (I have the standard vinyl edition) and shipped as a double album in the packaging. This lets the album cover have a fold down the middle allowing more artwork and a cool addition where, what should be, Side D. It isn’t music, it’s an etching by the artist behind the album, Boneface, who was also the artist behind their previous album ...Like Clockwork. The liner notes are basic, as well. Lyrics and some small artwork. This edition of the album only cost me $25 so this was definitely a worthy buy, considering all the extras. This will assuredly give the album a slight boost in score giving it a solid,

warning: very long story.

Takes place back in 2014, long read with a lot of buildup to revenge. I was about a year into my job and was being recognized for my talents and promoted pretty regularly. I was constantly being used as the liaison between my company and the client companies we had business and contracts with, and literally have saved our contract companies hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Then I was approached by Amy, who was in another department, for a job opportunity in the next month or so. She was going out on medical leave and was going to train me to take over her position in the interim and then fully take it over once she came back and moved into a new role. I was ecstatic because I knew she had a salary position and that’s what I really wanted. Most of the salaried positions in the company were the kind you had direct reports and in my industry there is a lot of stupid and handholding so I was not looking forward to have to deal with that stuff, but here was this angel offering me the salary I wanted and the stepping stone I wanted to get further in the company, all without having to deal with stupidity on a daily basis! So for the next 3 weeks I’m pulled from my current duties about twice a week to train in her position. In the beginning it was really menial stuff to get acquainted with her department but then we started getting into the bigger Excel stuff. Now her job was 90% Excel based, but in having her teach me her job and the duties and deadlines for certain things I realized she was basically flying by with basic Excel knowledge (I’m taking formulas to do math and VLOOKUPs were the majority of what she used in EVERYTHING). Now I was really okay with it and knew I could bring a lot more to the position with my knowledge and really help out the management team and showcase my expertise to them.

So she goes out on leave and I take over her position with no problem. I automate a lot of her duties during that time and implement a lot of new processes that optimized a lot of what she was doing. I find I have a lot of free time though, because I was better at Excel something that took her 2 hours took me 15 minutes, so I start taking some online learning courses my company offered in preparation of taking over the salaried position fully.

She comes back from leave a few weeks later and this is when I start to realize I’ve been bamboozled. Amy officially starts her new role, head of Quality Assurance, and I continue doing what I’m doing, with basically no feedback from her. About a week after she comes back I get called into her office and am basically told that the company is restructuring some positions and that the position she used to hold is no longer available, so no salary as promised. I’m disheartened by that but she says she can get me at least a raise on my hourly rate and I can keep doing what I’m doing 4 days a week and for the fifth day I have to do the same duties as the lowest folk on the totem pole.

So no salaried position, I get the do all her old work for the promise of more pay, and I’m essentially starting at the bottom again at her department. I really needed a job at this point so I went with it and for the next 2 months I do my job even better than before, thinking at least the higher ups will see my work ethic and performance and rewards will eventually come. I mean, I’m doing double what Amy used to do and sending her everything she requests for management and I’m ranked the top man of the low totem pole workers.

We get a new Big Boss soon (who is still the most amazing boss I have ever had) and she sees what I’ve been doing (she makes it a point to get to know all her staff) so she starts inviting me to the management meetings to see exactly what they need of me. Well, in that first meeting I find out that 90% of the management staff had no idea I was the one completing the duties and reports they were getting and really had no idea what my job was. Amy had been pawning of my work as her own and was getting praise from them for being so great and essentially doing two jobs. I was livid, but again really needed this job, so I held my composure and just generally made myself available to the other management staff for whatever they needed, I cut Amy out of it.

That went well for awhile, I was being appreciated and celebrated for my work, I was getting more duties that were really freeing up some time for the upper management to focus on getting results from their teams, and I didn’t have to deal with Amy much anymore. I was getting ingrained with the new client as well, so much so that they always reached out to me personally when an investigation needed to be done or a high value customer needed to be reached out to. It felt as if I was really fully in this role now and was back on the path to promotion. The only thing missing was the money for the work as was doing, I was making the same (and sometimes less) money as the low folk on the totem pole when I was really starting to do managerial work. So I brought up my pay raise to Amy and she said she would “look into it.” Two weeks go by and she advises that the company would not approve my pay raise as I was not “technically” in a position that warranted it, I was coded as a low man still. Something didn’t feel right about that so I went above her and brought it to the Big Boss. She was more than happy to see what kind of increase she could get me and told me that Amy had never even come to her to get the approval process started for my raise. So this was like the third time she had lied to me. Not only that, the other managers starting coming to me with requests for work that Amy used to do, only she never trained me on these things and wasn’t doing them herself so some things were not getting done. I sucked it up and went to her about the requests but she said she would handle them, she still didn’t want to give me all the tools to the castle to be able to do her old job fully. But again, I was smarter than her with Excel so I just watched her folders closely for the completed information and basically back-tracked the process to learn how to do it.

I was getting pretty fed up at that point but Big Boss was working on my raise AND getting me back pay for the time I had been doing the work so I stuck with it and avoided Amy as much as possible. Amy also had me start doing some stuff for her and her new department, I had built so many new things into our repository and access programs that some things could no longer function without me as no one else knew how to run them. And through what I was doing for her I learned her team was failing to meet their numbers and was just not providing the work they should have. About this time the client started to realize the same thing, thanks much in part to some reports Amy had me doing for her and sending to the client. I realized looking back at older reporting that she had been cooking the numbers essentially and it looked as if our department as a whole took a steep dive when I took over, but my numbers were just telling the truth. So the client reached out to me in regards to that so I explained my practice in full and the client realized I was giving an accurate portrait of how things were. I also learned during that client meeting that the head of the Quality Assurance dept was expected to have almost a mastery level knowledge of the client and their processes. It clicked shortly after that that Amy had never been properly trained on the client material. I had went through 4 weeks of client training when I moved over but Amy went right from her first previous offline role (no real need for knowledge of the client and their tools) to the Quality Assurance role. Oh, now I had her. I spent the next week compiling all the instances of Amy reaching out to me for client knowledge and the timelines of her promotions and then put the bug in the clients ear. The very next day a meeting was called by the client with all the heads of our department and Amy. It started with the client probing her about things she should know if she had been trained and then ended with the slow realization that Amy was in deep shit because she knew NOTHING. By the end of the meeting Amy was to be immediately removed her position and to have nothing to do with our client moving forward. And the client name-dropped me specifically to help with her dept in the transition. So this woman who had lied to me to get me to do her job, took all the credit for my work for a time, lied about a raise, and was just generally not the best manager was about to lose her job. I was in heaven.

But then she weaseled her way into another role as a front line manager in another department with my company, and based on her previous role, they were happy to have her come help them with this brand new account. So she was taking a position downgrade, got to keep being employed, and her pay stayed the same. Oh, this would not stand. As I mentioned, she is just not a nice manager and she previously cooked the books in her old role so I knew she wouldn’t miss the opportunity to do the same in her new role. So I waited and I watched and I collected first hand accounts from people she was managing. And a little over two months into her new role I dropped the biggest bomb of information on HR they had ever seen. Every single member of her team had numerous personal interactions with her that were unbecoming of a manger and nearly every report she touched was wrong in some way. She had actually screwed up their efficiency report so bad for those two months that it appeared the account was doing so well in efficiency but losing money on the profitability side that it had management stumped.

I got to expose her as an Excel fraud with this mishap, she cost the account thousands, her team hated her and put in a plethora of complaints against her, and my accurate reports showed by crappy her team was doing under her management. She was let go within 2 hours of my HR bomb.

And in the end Big Boss was able to get me my raise (and then some) and back pay of nearly a year and my skills and hard work were noticed by all and I was in line for a promotion (I have been in the promoted role for a year now!).

Lie to me, steal my work, lie to the client and management and I will make sure two fortune 500 companies will never let you near them with a ten foot pole and your reputation is ruined in our town and industry. I saw her working at Target a few months ago, best satisfaction ever.

Game of the Year 2016: My Top Three

It's been a long road for Game of the Year and 2016 in general, but we finally made it to the top three! In case you missed it, there were a ton of other games I loved this year that I wrote about in a post I called "Very Good Games".

And one last thing before we close this out: thanks for reading!

#3. Hyper Light Drifter

This year, no single moment compared to the rush I got from my first chain-dash in Hyper Light Drifter. There's a primal satisfaction to the accelerating timing it demands, as each flash of pink and teal raises the pressure of the impending button press. Eventually I learned that it's not that good in combat and it's only one of many means of survival, yet it was at that precise moment that the game won me over.

I say this without exaggeration: Hyper Light Drifter is a visual masterpiece. Fans and Kickstarter backers have been drooling over screens for years now, and the reality seems to have even exceeded expectations. Environments overflow with lightly muted colors and all kinds of mystery, like enormous Evangelion-inspired beasts, esoteric symbols, and ruins of a civilization long since past. Animation is beautifully handled frame-by-frame, highlighting the tension in each action and closing off with a shimmer of vibrant neon.

It's not an easy game by any means, but success becomes its own reward. Every battle is a fury of bullets and blades with far more dead bodies than dead air. I found myself often getting lost in the chaos, only realizing a room was clear when my darting eyes couldn't find anything new to shoot at. What's unusual, though, is that I didn't find the boss fights to deliver the same sense of exhilaration as the average encounter along the way, but as a capstone to a difficult journey, they work well enough. Maybe I should just be grateful I was never tempted to chuck a controller.

Hyper Light Drifter is enthralling, both in its hectic gameplay and its unwordly atmosphere. I know without a doubt that I'll be back for another shot at deciphering what the hell happened to this world.

#2. Kirby: Planet Robobot

If you've ever daydreamed about what you'd do with your own giant super robot, Kirby: Planet Robobot is a game you need to play. I mean this in the best way possible: it seems like the game was designed by a 6 year old with complete creative authority.

"Give it a giant drill! No, saw blades! Give it flamethrowers! Make it transform into a car! AND a jet!"

Yep, those are all things you can do, and it owns!

The heart of Kirby games has always lied in their diverse power-ups: fire, ice, spark, hammer, bomb, and dozens of others. This time, the sizable set of abilities is doubled by applying not just to Kirby, but his huge, face-shaped armor suit. If Kirby gets a sword, his mech gets two massive beam-sabers. If Kirby gets a jetpack, his mech transforms into a jet! Discovering all of the ways these forms could be used was a joy that lasted me the entire length of the game.

With so many power-ups there's a staggering number of game mechanics at play, which HAL Laboratories take full advantage of in the level design. Whether its a puzzle requiring a certain power-up, a rare boss or ability, or simple visual flair, each stage has some kind of "gimmick" to separate it from the last. Ideas reappear only seldomly, and not without being somehow altered and built upon. Sometimes the game even pretends to be something else entirely, like the shmup style stages that utilize the "Jet" version of the robot armor, or the auto-scrolling stages in the "Wheel" armor. All of this leads to a collection of stages that feel memorable and worth revisiting.

Between its game design and its vast possibility-space, Planet Robobot executes on its concept almost as perfectly as I can imagine. I know Kirby isn't the top Nintendo franchise for most people, but given the run the series is having right now, I'm starting to seriously question how long my little pink creampuff will go underappreciated!

#1. VA-11 HALL-A

VA-11 HALL-A is a visual novel that sounds extremely good in theory - just read its tagline: "cyberpunk bartender action." You play as Jill, who works at a bar called Valhalla in a futuristic city of perpetual darkness, poor people, robots, androids, and most of all, strife. It operates pretty differently as a video game, though. It's often assumed that gameplay exists for the sole purpose of fun, but even for a visual novel, VA-11 HALL-A's simple mechanics took me more than a few drinks to warm up to. Kinda' like in real life, the process of mixing "Brandtinis" and "Bleeding Janes" isn't especially exciting after the first few times, and almost everyone visiting the bar seems to have way more going on in life than you. I just wasn't seeing how it came together. It took some time and careful thought, but by the end of the game it had shaped into something incredible.

It's all thanks to the bar's atmosphere that I stuck around at all, and man, did they nail it. First and foremost, this soundtrack is phenomenal. What woud otherwise be your average cyberpunk setting becomes a wondrous dystopia thanks to Garoad's deft, moody composition. Its implementation is sharp, too. Instead of having music set to match each scene, you're handed complete control over the playlist while on duty. There's a palpable realism to incidentally having serious talks over loud, upbeat music, or joking during an ominous buildup. It helps to give Jill some believable agency as a bartender, too. You can always decide what drink to serve, how strong to mix it, or what music you want to play, but not who comes in that night or what to talk about. Details matter, and the developers at Sukeban Games were paying careful attention.
