I was just minding my business today and I had a random urge to check tumblr after a while of being inactive. THEN I SEE MONKEY BARS PART 2 and I just knew I was gonna go back to my tumblr era!!

First of all, I’ve been your reader since Pink Whitney and I just wanted to express how proud I am of you ❤️ I know it wasn’t at all easy to write this part especially with balancing so much other stuff but I wanted to let you know that YOU DID NOT FUCKING DISAPPOINT!! I noticed how much you’ve grown as a writer since PW and I am so so sooo psyched for everything else you have in store.

Second, MB PART 2 WAS CRAZY IN THE BEST WAY POSSIBLE. I’m honestly still speechless about my thoughts on it since I just finished reading it but the point is YOU ARE AMAZING. The emotions that put me through? Absolutely insane (but absolutely worth it) 😮‍💨 I was so impressed by how you handled the ending of their story and (as divided as everyone was on whether they should be endgame or not) I could not see it going any other way than it did! CLAPS AND KISSES FOR YOU 👏😘

Finally, since finishing MB, I found myself going into another deep dive into your account and I cannot begin to describe the nostalgia I felt. With all of the headcanons and requests for the frat universe (still hung up on that anon hc about wonyoung and jungwon 😩 I need more of them I beg), I cannot begin to describe how significant you’re stories are to my memory. a/n : so this is like my first fic in a whillleee but i’ve been loving fez so much so i wrote a very self indulgent fic about it. I’ve been heavilly inspired about writing by these lovely author’s and their personal works that i can’t reccomend enough ; @heartshapedwords @brooklynwritess @imaginemegood @dollybarnes and that’s just a few but seriously please go visit their works ,, u will not regret it ! Thank y’all so much for sharing yalls work and breaking me out of my writers block,, mwah!!

Fez couldn’t remember when Y/N had become such an essential part of his peace. Growing up he had only ever had himself and his grandma, and then when she had fallen into a coma it was only him and Ash. Maybe, he had just gotten so used to taking care of his little brother, his grandma’s endless medical bills, and the family business his grandma had busted her ass to build that he hadn’t thought of what he needed but when he comes home to her, he knows.

She’s lounging in his bed wearing a pair of his boxers and a hoodie he swears he told her to not touch while reading some book. He couldn’t even find it in him to be annoyed at her messing around in his clothes because she just looked so damn comfortable - and shit did fez need comfort right now.

He knocked on the doorframe, “ nice hoodie, ma “ his amused voice broke her out of the deep trance this chapter had on her. “ Thanks, I’m thinkin it’s my new favorite,” she said slyly. She placed her book to the side and opened her arms gesturing for him, “C’mere baby”.

Fez felt his heart warm at her actions, quickly making his way to lay across her, his head lying in the warmth of her neck. He felt all of the stress of the day hit him while surrounded by her warm vanilla perfume combined with her acrylic nails dancing across his back slowly being lulled to sleep.

“ How did the deal go.” she hummed, leaning onto his head. Keeping his eyes closed he responded ‘‘Bout as good as it could.” he huffed “ Motherfucker talked so much, pissed me off.” Y/N couldn’t help but laugh at the annoyance lacing his voice.

“ Yoo, why you laughing “

“ You’re so grumpy Fez.” she laughed. He nipped at her shoulder in retaliation, causing Y/N to let out a small screech and pinch him in return.

“Not cool,” he only hummed in response as they laid in silence together simply enjoying each other's presence. The silence was cut through by Fez’s slurred sleeping voice. “ I love you Y/N.” another peaceful silence followed “ For real, couldn’t do this without you.”

Y/N felt a wave of peace wash over her with his words, “ I love you too Fez, so fucking much.” she looked down at his sleeping figure and delivered a gentle kiss to his head and covered them both with the comforter, quickly following him into sleep.

Told in alternative viewpoints and set against the backdrop of Los Angeles in the springtime, when the rainy season rolls in and the Santa Ana's can still blow--these two girls are about to learn that in the city of dreams, anything is possible--even love.”

TL;DR Tell Me How You Really Feel is an ode to romantic comedies, following two girls on opposite sides of the social scale as they work together to make a movie and try very hard not to fall in love. Cheerleader meets film nerd, enemies to lovers.

I found this book through one of those tik tok videos where someone is flinging books off a pile at light speed under a caption “queer SA (South Asian) books you need to read”. I absolutely love those videos, even though they test my screenshotting abilities.

It’s been a while since I updated this blog(?) and that’s because I’ve been very busy finishing out the school year and reading every gay book I could get my hands on over the course of pride month. I will be posting reviews of those books soon, but in a quick review so far this month I’ve read:

• Tell Me How You Really Feel (this review!)

• The Raven Cycle (yes all 4 books, no I will not be reviewing)

Honorable mention: All 50 episodes of The Untamed (SUCH a good cdrama) & Season 1 of Stranger Things

I’ve realized over the course of this book binge that I prefer my enemies to lovers to have good reasoning - or at least understandable reasoning on both sides. My favorite part is seeing how that can morph into love without either realizing until it’s too late *cue evil laughter*

Tell Me How You Really Feel does that perfectly. I especially loved how it was written - the characters were flawed, raw and dynamic, and the writing style reminded me of books by Nicola Yoon (The Sun is Also a Star, Everything Everything). The romance isn’t necessarily the focus - it’s shoved in on the shelf along with everything else happening in the characters lives. The story simply starts (ish) and ends with the life of their romance within that.

And because this is a gay high school romance between a cheerleader and a film nerd, of course there are a million movie references, from Pakeezah to Pretty in Pink.

But real quick, let’s talk

Representation

Sana Khan and Rachel Recht, the main characters, are both into women. Although their sexualities aren’t explicitly stated, this part is made very clear.

Sana is desi, and Persian and Indian if I remember correctly? Her family is very mixed and has a lot of languages (Bengali, Urdu, Arabic, Persian, French, etc). She is second-gen American, while I’m pretty sure Rachel is first-gen (at least on her mom’s side).

Rachel is Mexican and Jewish, and her family consists of just her and her father (and their larger community) in comparison to Sana’s many cousins and aunties/uncles. Her full name is Rachel Consuela Recht, which I’m guessing is to show her mixed cultures.

For Sana I can somewhat call this an own voices review on representation, but please keep in mind the Indian (and larger desi community) is not a monolith & we won’t all agree on my own interpretation.

What I really liked about representation for Sana and her family was it is very women-centric. Her grandmother, Mamani, is very clearly the matriarch, and Farrah, Sana’s mom, is a single mother working in the film industry. In western literature desi culture is typically portrayed as oppressing women, especially in Muslim households, but this stereotype is flipped on its head by Sana’s family. It also showed how within a religion certain family members can be more religious than others - Sana & her Mamani are more religious (praying regularly, not drinking, etc) while Farrah is less so - and there’s no negative connotation on it.

Rachel and Sana both engage in religious holidays over the course of the book (Norwuz for Sana, Passover for Rachel). Since I’m neither Muslim or Jewish, it was interesting to learn more about the holidays and how they’re celebrated.

Single parenting rep (Rachel raised by her dad, Sana raised by her mom) was also really good. As someone being raised by a single mom & at one point a single dad, the struggle is portrayed really well.

Finally, I love that Sana fills the character of pretty perfect Gilmore-girls-esque cheerleader. Brown women don’t often get to be portrayed as lovely and soft and also raw and real at the same time. It really hit my heart 💗 Sana’s features are seen as beautiful by everyone around her - like a commonly accepted fact. She’s the official “pretty girl” of her school - and so much more beneath that.

What I Loved:

Aside from the good rep, the way the book is written is just ✨ poetic ✨

“Sana smiled, and suddenly Rachel understood every stupid love poem comparing the beloved to the sun.”

HOW DO I RECOVER??

Mainly though, I think this book came at the right time for me. Sana’s situation was really relatable to me, and her storyline actually helped me figure out some stuff in my own life (no spoilers!)

If you’re worried about the future, or planning to become a doctor or lawyer - read this book.

I’m also a sucker for big movie style gestures so this was a plus. I could see how the book was going to end generally way before the end, and that made it more of a comfort read than an “intellectual” read. I loved the character development as well - some serious words of wisdom in there!

As someone who wants to go to college in LA, and can’t afford to visit, this is as close as it gets to seeing what life there is like for me 😂 I’m curious to see what those Santa Anas feel like!

Why I couldn’t give it a 10:

I wasn’t the biggest fan of Rachel’s character to be honest. She hated Sana so much at the beginning, for something that had happened in their freshman year (the story takes place in their senior year). I could understand animosity, but it was another level. It made me think Rachel had anger issues - she seemed really self pitying and insecure. Which would have been fine - I’m all for character development - if she had realized that. But Rachel never seemed to come to terms with the fact that she had treated Sana like sh*t at every turn for nearly 4 years. It’s not that they don’t fall in love (this is a love story) but she doesn’t really feel remorseful for how she acted.

On set, when she’s directing the crew, the way she treated them reminded me of Michael Scott from the Office 😭

I also wish there had been more focus on the other characters in the book. Farrah, Sana’s mom, and Daniel, Rachel’s dad, kind of felt like glorified plot devices, especially near the end. Same goes for Diesel, Sana’s so-called best friend. We don’t actually see a lot of their relationship aside from Diesel giving her rides from school and then playing video games with her. In the end, his purpose was also a little plot device-y, a little serving the main ship, etc.

I liked that Diesel subverted the dumb insensitive jock trope, but I would have loved to see more of him and Maddie (another cheerleader)!

Overall, the book was a satisfying beach read (as in, I literally read it on the beach). Feel good, decent character development (on Sana’s part), and it gave me something I’d really been searching for: an enemies to lovers story between queer women of color in high school. Like babe- this is my niche!!

And yes, I cried at the end.

I feel like I say this all the time, but I never expected to get the kind of reaction I have over this fic. Here I was, just a random newbie to the writing world (at least for public consumption), and to get the amount of amazing and responsive feedback I've gotten has just been astronomical to me. You are the reason I push myself to continue and improve my writing. I seriously cannot say thank you enough, but truly, thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Across the Hallway was my first baby. It was this random idea that I just needed to get out and when I look back on it (knowing that it needs A TON of edits), I can't help but smile at how far I've come. IDBTWY has been an absolute joy to write (yes, even when everyone yells at me to just make them kiss and to stop hurting them 😈).

I can't say I blame you for letting IDBTWY dethrone ATH, because, in my heart, it has too. I don't usually give myself kudos or talk about things I've done that make me proud, but this fic is one of the proudest things I've ever accomplished (-ish, since it's not done yet).

As for a schedule, I tend to post every other week - but I'm not always successful. Life gets busy, ya-know? The Expanse!! A TV series adapted from an eight, soon to be nine-book sci-fi series by James SA Corey (a pseudonym for Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck). The TV series has only reached Book 4 so far, but Book 5 is my absolute favorite so I’m jigglingly excited to see what they do! 

The Expanse is possibly the best TV adaptation I’ve seen to date, so even if you read the books first, you won’t be disappointed.

And, yeah. Women in Spartan suits 😩

I call The Expanse ‘sci-fi Game of Thrones’, but only in the sense that it’s an Epic series with multiple POV, incredible worldbuilding, and very intricate politics. There’s no gratuitous violence! (NB: there is graphic violence, but it never comes across as masturbatory!) There’s no explicit rape!

There is, however, very strongly insinuated trauma. Several main characters have been through the wringer, especially Amos and Naomi. It’s handled delicately, and didn’t upset me, as someone With TriggersTM. But please take your own safety into account when reading these books/watching this show! The Expanse is an Adult series/show set in a realistic futuristic world where bad things do happen. The authors and showrunners just don’t feel the need to show every gross bad thing in explicit detail. 

With that being said, this series completely lacks the Grimdark Nonsense of Game of Thrones. The books have way better prose (in my humble opinion). The writing is poignant, heartfelt, and often hi-fucking-larious. Corey manages to make moderately hard sci-fi palatable to me, an absolute frube who quit anything involving numbers at GCSE. But, more than anything, this series is founded on hope. It shines through, even in the bleakest moments. 

So, the basics!

The world/s! 

Earth: the old superpower. Overcrowded, under-worked population, living on a poisoned planet. Earthers are the largest and most powerful political players, and (to begin with) the only ones with a fully habitable world. Even if, y’know, global warming happened.

Mars: a society of scientists and idealists who want to secure their planet’s future and terraform it to create a better, brighter Earth. Started off as an Earthern colony, gained independence with the aid of a seriously epic military. 

The Belt: a downtrodden group of humans who live in space, predominantly in the asteroid belt. Their morphology has been altered by low-grav conditions, sometimes past the point where they can no longer set foot on planets. They live in shitty conditions and are mistreated by Earth and Mars alike. Revolutionary factions abound, but struggle to unite.

There is no overarching good or bad (besides, arguably, CAPITALISM). Every faction has valid concerns and valid fears, amazing individuals and awful ones. They’re all presented as... human.

Except Murtry and Inaros, fuck those guys

The plot!

1) Found family of misfits get stuck together after accidentally sparking an interplanetary war! They have to fight for survival against enemies from Earth, Mars and the Belt - as well as the cold cruelty of the vacuum! 

2) Noir detective searches for a business magnate’s missing daughter! (He starts off a bit... cliche... and there are some serious eye-rolly moments with his character, but he does get way more interesting after Season 1.)

3) Glorious f-bomb dropping Politics Grandma does her best to save Earth and prevent the war, while surrounded by muppets with far too much power!

4) THEN THE ALIENS HAPPEN

Oh yeah, the aliens

life... but not as we know it

The aliens are portrayed as so different to humans we can barely comprehend them and they can barely comprehend us. This makes them sometimes safe, mostly really dangerous, and always stone-cold terrifying. They can be read as an active component of the setting, which is Apathetic & Deadly Outer Space. The series does such a great job of establishing the dangers of hard-vacuum that it starts to feel like a character in its own right. The aliens play into that so well.

BUT ANYWAY ONTO OUR CORE GROUP OF DUMBASSES

MAIN SQUAD

JAMES HOLDEN

He’s actually very soft slkdfjgsdfg

Hick farm boy from Earth runs away to space after getting booted from the Navy. Holden has... way too much honor. It gets him in trouble a lot (and, y’know, makes him start A WAR) but he’s just so genuine you can’t help but love him. Holden always tries to do what’s right. He has three great loves: people being decent to each other, his crew (especially his gf Naomi and honestly we stan) and his coffee machine. Even when he smashes it. He mostly just wants to nap and/or drink coffee, but people keep being shitty and he has to keep mediating. Sometimes with guns.

NAOMI NAGATA

Second-in-command, because she’s waaaay too smart to want to be captain. Genius engineer, sharp-witted and competent and so sweet it physically hurts me. She and Holden have a beautiful slow-burn love story that results in a truly respectful and healthy relationship. There’s 0 unnecessary drama. I love it. I can’t say much about Naomi because SPOILERS but she’s a Belter with a Dark Past. She has done Bad Things. When you find out more, I promise you’ll want to hug her.

AMOS BURTON

BIG. SOFT. DEADLY. Amos has serious mental health issues stemming from major childhood abuse. It’s dealt with (as far as I can tell) as sensitively as it can be. He doesn’t really... have an instinctual understanding of morality (unless it involves kids. You hurt kids? He hurts you.) So he tries to find ‘good people’ to follow, so he can be sure he’s doing the right thing. His search for a moral compass among the main crew gives me many, many feelings. He’s also confirmed Bi/Pan, and he can walk in heels. Champ.

ALEX KAMAL

Getaway driver extraordinaire!! Ex-Martian navy, awesome pilot, adores his ship. Has a great Texan drawl. You get to see more of him in the TV series than the books, and it’s amazing. He entertains himself by doing backflips in 0-gravity while the rest of the team are out on missions. Also very soft with Amos. Bros.

DETECTIVE MILLER

Miller is your classic jaded, cynical cop, accused of being a bootlicker by his fellow Belters for siding with the law (which, of course, favors Earth/Mars). He becomes a seriously cool character but I can tell you nothing without spoilers!

Imagine if your sweet old grandma was a) a fasionista with more outfits than all of Bollywood b) swore like a sailor c) pretty much single-handedly ran Earth. Literally the best character in existence. 

There are many more glorious characters, including a gentle lesbian reverend, a vengeful baby sister, a tragic yet awesome older sister, a nervous autistic-coded botanist, several Belter generals locked in a power struggle, and DRUMMER

aka, Naomi’s Belter freedom-fighter ex. The good ex. Not the other one. We don’t talk about the other one. Drummer and Naomi were so obviously A Thing fight meeee She’s a mine of Belter slang and badassery, and one of my favorite side characters.
