okay so im drafting this at like 8am on a sunday and while i usually don't feel comfortable posting milestones, this felt like an important one and i am so incredibly grateful for you all
i saw this morning that i hit 1k followers which is absolutely insane to me
Tumblr media
i want to thank everybody who has ever followed me, supported me or inspired me especially as of recently and i apologise to anybody that i may have missed from tagging below (i originally tagged everyone in this post but it wouldn't let me because of stupid tumblr block sizes so please check the reblog down below) and there is absolutely no pressure from my end for you to interact at all! i just wanted to say thank you and that i really appreciate every single one of you and whether or not you were aware of it, you had an impact on me both as a person and a writer. im simultaneously in awe and trying to process why so many people on here have even tolerated me on this godforsaken hellsite
i greatly encourage any and everybody seeing this to check out any/everybody i have tagged below in my reblog and their writings/blogs, i can guarantee you that you will not be disappointed
i feel like i have been able to grow so much as a writer since publishing my first fic on this app, lavender haze, because of everybody's support and i just cannot even comprehend how so many people could actually enjoy what i write or listen to all my ramblings
when i was 13 and writing fanfic for the first time back in 2018, i never would have imagined being welcomed into a community so wide and meeting so many incredible people through this fandom let alone people actually enjoying what i write and following me at all
this horny fandom feels like a second home sometimes and i want to sincerely thank every single one of you from the bottom of my heart for being here for me even when i overshare and talk too much ☠️
sometimes i feel like i've only just typed howyouloveyourdragon into create account for the very first time and sometimes it feels like it's been a year already but hey only a few more months to go and the anniversary of howyouloveyourdragon will be among us
to celebrate you all joining me on here, i think that i will be finally buckling down and finishing as many of my drafts as i can and publishing them asap for you all to enjoy
i will be uploading a poll shortly to let you decide how i should prioritise them
unfortunately i doubt that i will able to celebrate in this way on the same day as this milestone as i will be in another country as of friday 28th but i will be trying my hardest to deliver these fics as soon as possible and as of this week i am reopening some malnourished drafts as i type this
to all of my followers, mutuals and friends thank you so very much

Obligatory Kallus ofc 🖤 but if you already have an ask about him or want something more: Kanan and/or Rex?
Oh you're the first one to request Kallus so let's go!
One aspect about them I love: I love and respect that even though he was in the Empire for a long time and actually believed in its cause and that it was helping the Galaxy (not like probably some of the others who joined to gain influence, money or power) he was still capable of changing, he didn't ignore the new facts and point of view presented to him by Zeb (and I imagine ignoring it would be very easy), instead he took steps to actually ask questions, find out the truth and eventually had enough courage to defect (my baby's character development is something that can be so personal...)
One aspect I wish more people understood about them: No idea actually
One (or more) headcanon(s) I have about this character: BUCKLE UP IT'S MY TIME TO SHINE!
He grew up in the Underworld, probably surrounded by many immigrant families, so he grew up in a diverse environment and knows a couple of languages besides Basic (btw he taught himself that posh Coruscanti accent in the Academy)
He would probably have a good alcohol tolerance (an Eastern European one, you know)
He used to be super self conscious about his freckles, many said it made him look childlish and unprofessional, but Zeb loves them and thinks they're absolutely adorable
He loves to stargaze, since he couldn't do that in the Underworld as a kid (bonus points if he's always amazed by plants and forests and nature for that exact reason)
He has scars after Onderon (like on his chest, back and arms) and is very self conscious about them
He cannot, for the love of his life, take a compliment
He's got very pretty penmanship
One character I love seeing them interact with: Zeb of course, duh! They are my sweethearts and I love them and not only because it's an obvious ship, I genuinely love their interactions. I adore The Honourable Ones and the way they were able to find the way to relate to each other despite being on two different sides of the war and that Zeb was the one who opened Kallus' eyes (and also shoutout to that small part of part 2 of Zero Hour, where they get the coordinates from Kallus' escape pod and Zeb just looks so scared and concerned for his man, like yes!)
One character I wish they would interact with/interact with more: I would honestly love to see him and Sabine become besties, they have the potential, both being defectors from the Empire, I love the concept of them growing closer and becoming friends and bonding over stuff like gossiping about old Imperial bosses. I also feel like these two would be the ones who cook best out of the crew so maybe like, kitchen gossip sessions over making dinner? Idk, I love it (oh and btw he totally lets Sabine paint his nails when she's bored)
One (or more) headcanon(s) I have that involve them and one other character:
As above, I think Kallus can cook quite decent meals, he just never had the time and so when he's in the Rebellion, Sabine encourages him to cook meals with her and he rediscovers that passion (and is later able to enjoy it fully on Lira San)
I feel like all droids love him and he's the only one besides Hera, who Chopper actually respects and wouldn't mess with (also because Kallus is nice to Chopper and he loves to be cherished, my little war criminal)
He's an orphan from the Coruscanti Underworld and had to fight his way to the surface and to the Imperial Academy and later off planet and his backstory is something he bonds over with Ezra (bonus points if they exchange tips on pickpocketing and shoplifting, since they both used to do that to survive)

I'm going to be real. I don't have any respect left for Bianca, and if that makes me a bad person, then so be it.
She's getting opportunities that women who comprehensively outperformed her are not getting. The woman who WON F1 academy, Marta Garcia, has not gotten as much recognition or opportunities as Bianca has. The woman who came runner-up to Marta, Lena Buhler, doesn't even have a confirmed F1 Academy or racing seat for 2024. Yet I'm supposed to feel sorry for Bianca, who instead of taking advantage of the opportunities she has been given, is mocking others and pushing them down to get where she wants to go?
The "autism" tweet isn't the only rude tweet she's liked about Lance being a pay driver and a waste of a seat, btw - I would be willing to bet she saw the ableism part and still liked it because she has some personal vendetta against him specifically without realizing that the majority of drivers in her current team - at least the ones from F1 and IndyCar - had wealthy ass parents who also supported their careers. Both Lando and Oscar have their fathers businesses as some of their primary personal sponsors on their F1 helmets. Yet Bianca targets one F1 driver, repeatedly, at a team she isn't even affiliated with and therefore wouldn't be able to pursue opportunities with, for whatever reason.
I'm all for women in motorsport. Maybe if Bianca buckled down and spent the time she spends liking insulting tweets about others in motorsport, she could actually do well in F1 Academy and work herself into a position where she could race in F1 or IndyCar or whatever. But when she's coming 7th in F1 Academy while her teammate is winning the whole thing, that isn't some case of "wahhh the only reason I'm not in F1 is because of Lance Stroll." Hell, Jess Hawkins is affiliated with the F1 team Lance races for, and Nico already let it slip that she had more competitive F1 testing times than Felipe, yet I've never seen her say a negative or ableist thing about Lance. Yet this is a pattern with Bianca who isn't even affiliated with Aston Martin. If she wants to be mad about people's fathers supporting them to make F1, maybe she should be focusing on Lando and Oscar. If she wants to be mad about people's fathers supporting them to make it in motorsport in general, she's also got Pato and David right there in papaya. She probably really would lose her sponsorship, or at least get a stern talking to by HR, if she treated them the same way she seems to think it's okay to treat Lance though.
It's a bit funny how this whole thing started because she couldn't just ignore and move past some irrelevant nobody calling her "overrated." She shouldn't be dishing unnecessary criticism out so much if she can't handle it herself.
As someone with autism who already frequently deals with ableism and motorsport fans frequently using autism as an insult, I sure as hell am not tolerating it from a driver — man or woman. I don't think actually holding her accountable for once, especially now that her disrespect centered around one driver has turned into straight up ableism, makes me misogynistic, but if it does, then fine. There are a lot of women drivers who are getting better results without this attitude that they are better than others and are owed something (which is a bit rich when you consider that, despite his underperforming versus his teammate, Lance had less positions between he and Fernando in the driver's standings than Bianca had between her and Marta).
woah okay right off the bat: not having any respect for someone by default makes you a bad person yes. it's lowering yourself to someone else's level and that's not really decent if i'm honest. but that's my opinion that's beside anything bianca said/did.
She's getting opportunities that women who comprehensively outperformed her are not getting. The woman who WON F1 academy, Marta Garcia, has not gotten as much recognition or opportunities as Bianca has. The woman who came runner-up to Marta, Lena Buhler, doesn't even have a confirmed F1 Academy or racing seat for 2024. i don't know who told you to feel sorry for bianca? i don't know what that refers to. beyond that, i don't really know what to say other than: the F1/motorsport world is unfair. i don't know why mclaren picked bianca over her colleagues ¯_(ツ)_/¯
Yet Bianca targets one F1 driver, repeatedly, at a team she isn't even affiliated with and therefore wouldn't be able to pursue opportunities with, for whatever reason.
i haven't seen her liking posts against lance repeatedly (i'm also not on twix) but that would be nasty of her. the motorsport world is filled with people with rich parents but having rich parents ≠ being a paid driver. a paid driver, generally, is someone who doesn't belong in F1 talent wise but does have a seat. having rich parents but also having enough talent makes you not a pay driver. i'm not sure if i'm explaining the nuance correctly here. but in my opinion, lando and oscar may have rich parents but make up for it in talent to not be pay drivers. i don't follow lance enough to know (or care) if he's one of either.
besides all of this: targeting one driver in particular is and will always be very fucking nasty and she should get some PR people meddle with her social media usage.
I'm all for women in motorsport. Maybe if Bianca buckled down and spent the time she spends liking insulting tweets about others in motorsport, she could actually do well in F1 Academy and work herself into a position where she could race in F1 or IndyCar or whatever. But when she's coming 7th in F1 Academy while her teammate is winning the whole thing, that isn't some case of "wahhh the only reason I'm not in F1 is because of Lance Stroll." She probably really would lose her sponsorship, or at least get a stern talking to by HR, if she treated them the same way she seems to think it's okay to treat Lance though.
okay but for some nuance: it's the off season so she can do what she wants without it (negatively) affecting her performance. and two, she did finish higher than fellow prema driver Chong. i haven't watched f1 academy this past season so i don't know how it went, but she's in between her two teammates. so it seems she's doing okay. and she is development driver of mclaren, so they must've seen something in her that's good enough to pick her over her fellow f1 academy drivers.
not about bianca in particular, but getting into F1 (i don't know anything about indycar) as a woman isn't easy and she's got just about the most she can, which is her current role at mclaren.
her getting or not getting opportunities that she's gotten thus far are separate from her tweet-liking behaviour. yes, it's bad, yes she shouldn't have, yes it's nice to see Jess is a normal person who doesn't do this, but bianca is in a similar role (right?) as jess.
she should get a stern pr talking to, yes. but she's also an 18 year old girl who's allowed to make mistakes and learn from them. this is one (according to you repetitive) mistake she needs to learn from, she needs Pr-people to tell her to Not do this, regardless of whether or not she holds this opinion.
It's a bit funny how this whole thing started because she couldn't just ignore and move past some irrelevant nobody calling her "overrated." She shouldn't be dishing unnecessary criticism out so much if she can't handle it herself.
well. from what i'd see, is that she liked a post where someone supported here. she should not have liked this tweet in particular! she should not have liked a post that calls lance stroll 'autism stroll'! but i get the sentiment of liking a post in which someone shows their support. this wasn't the one tho!
There are a lot of women drivers who are getting better results without this attitude that they are better than others and are owed something (which is a bit rich when you consider that, despite his underperforming versus his teammate, Lance had less positions between he and Fernando in the driver's standings than Bianca had between her and Marta).
i understand your sentiment here, yes. it's fine to not want to support her when she's liked a post with this! that's your personal choice.
for me, again, i see it as a mistake she's yet to learn the consequences and depth of what this means. since f1 academy and her role at mclaren, she's gotten this new magnifying glass on her she's likely not had before, so she's gotta get used to what this all entails. she's eighteen. this is bad, but she's also so young and she's got to learn this. it is wrong, yes! but she's not irredeemable for this.
it doesn't make you misogynistic geez. you dislike one woman, not because of her gender. breathe in breathe out, please! maybe, if it's getting to you so much, take a step back from the internet.
i've just thrown in some of my two cents. i'm also a bit tired and didn't reread what i said so i hope it makes sense. anyway my take is: she's young, this is bad, she needs someone to tell her Not To Do This, she needs to apologise and show that she's not ableist, and then we're back to 0 and she should be fine. but that's me, believing that humans can make mistakes, can hold wrong opinions without realising it, and that everyone deserves another chance.

Buckle up, this is going to be a long one!
Lately, I've been thinking about how I present/what I consider myself to be. I know labels aren't the be all and end all but can be useful nonetheless.
People aren't always able to take in a long post, so the TL;DR (Too Long; Didn't Read) summary is:
I'm a bisexual trans woman who is possibly leaning more to 'soft butch' in terms of looks/identity.
Thoughts about this/advice is most welcome.
...On with the show!
So far in life, I've figured out that I'm bisexual, and more recently, also a trans woman. What I'm still getting my head around is how masc/fem I am/consider myself to be.
Growing up, I found I was always envious of how women looked and dressed ('How come they get to wear such pretty things and there's nothing like that for me?'). I suppose I was more preoccupied with other aspects of my life (school, family, mental health) to come to the realisation that I could wear the pretty things if I wanted to.
I was dealing with my shyness on top of my introversion, among other things, and the school recommended that I see the child psychologist (Dad: 'He's not going, there's nothing wrong with my kid''; his controlling nature and fragile ego rearing its ugly head again). So, no help for me then...
As an aside, if I had been assessed, I reckon they would have said I had some sort of neurodivergence (but that's a whole new subject for another time!).
I wasn't totally nerdy/bookish, I enjoyed playing in the school sports teams (rounders, football, and later on, rugby), I wouldn't say I was outstanding but I had skills! I was also in the Scouts, and loved the outdoors and camping life! I was considered to be, for want of better terms, a 'normal/average' kid, neither overly effeminate nor overly macho.
As a child of the pre-internet age (there was a time that it didn't exist, shocking I know!). I never had any easily accessible resources to explore the many thoughts and feelings I was having. I had never knowingly met anyone who was gay, lesbian or bi in real life, let alone anyone who was transgender. The dominant representations and stereotypes that existed in the media at that time were:
gay men, depicted as camp limp-wristed fairies, were going around spreading HIV/AIDS
lesbians were presented as either despised butch man-haters or the 'prettier' ones tolerated as long as men could watch them in pornos
transgender women were men in dresses and transgender men were non-existent.
Throughout my teens and my twenties, I came to realise that I was attracted to men and women. I was able to access counselling and a workplace support group helping me to confirm and accept my bisexuality.
One memory from that time, I was chatting to a friend, and I don't really recall how we got talking about this topic (I think he was maybe telling me about his girlfriend at the time), but I said to him, that if I was a girl, I would probably be a lesbian. Looking back, maybe it was one of the signs that I never picked up at the time that indicated that something was a bit different about me.
Skipping forward, with the growth and ease of access of the internet, which allowed me to find resources, and finding the courage to go to local pride events, I was starting to show a bit more of my feminine side now and again. I occasionally wore nail polish, lip gloss and mascara.
When I began making more online friends, some would like to roleplay during chat. I would almost always take the female part, so the scene would usually play out as us being a 'straight couple'. Still, I hadn't joined the dots, it was just something I found was a turn on for me. Perhaps it was naivety or an unconscious denial that stopped me making connections.
Now we get to the event that finally made me realise, that actually, I'm trans.
It was the coming out of my cousin's husband as a trans woman. That was my egg moment, hearing that news sparked something in me, making me look back over my life which gave me lots of 'A-Ha!' moments. The fact that it was someone I knew personally and had met, and seeing how they transitioned from pre-hormones, onwards, really impacted on me. I follow her continued journey on her blog and she is helping other trans people via outreach and advocacy work.
So, back to the question of presentation/identity. While I am drawn to what could be termed traditional feminine things (make-up, dresses, long hair, and so on), day-to-day I feel more of a casual, jeans and t-shirt type of woman.
I love the feeling and look of my shaved head (such a good look for women!), and I can always have the choice to pick different colours and styles of wig or wear headscarves or hats.
The two main things I want are facial hair removal (I'll probably go down the electrolysis route) and hormones. I feel they, more than clothing style and so on, would be more helpful with my sense of womanhood.
I think I fall into the 'soft butch' area in general with the option to present more fem or masc depending on my feelings/situation.
There is one woman in particular, who I follow on Tumblr, that manages to rock different looks; whether it is bare-faced or made-up, or sporting hair that is long, buzzed, shaven or wearing a wig, she is truly inspirational!
Well, that ended up being longer than expected! Any thoughts, observations, questions or advice on anything in this post are most welcomed, feel free to message me.

"Dunno about the plan," Olu remarks as he turns in front of the mirror. "But I'm down with the clothing."
It helps that they aren't wearing whatever will fit from Stede's wardrobe. No, this time Stede and Ed had them all measured properly, with Roach, Wee John, The Swede, and Frenchie directing the designing and sewing.
It was a lot of effort, but the lingerie looks amazing on everyone. Each piece bears little details to make it unique to them, from colors and materials and beading to more.
For Olu, it's soft teal lace, hand-dyed by an incredibly patient Roach who insisted on temporarily keeping his earring as a color comparison. But it paid off, and the color pops beautifully.
"I like them too," Jim slips up behind him, arms wrapping around his waist. A finger traces under the top of the garter belt he wears. "I think this should be a daily uniform."
"Do you?" Olu teases. "What about sunburn?"
"Worth it."
"Oh? And you wouldn't be too distracted to work?"
He already knows the answer as he gently pulls Jim around to admire them in the mirror. "Because I don't think I'd get anything done with you in this."
At Jim's request, they stuck with a light orange lace for everything except two parts. The harness that creates delicate boundary lines around Jim's chest is a soft thin leather, with delicate golden buckles. The jock strap they wear is made of the same leather, cut to fit tight, but not so tight as to be uncomfortable or leave too harsh of marks after wearing it.
"Shut up," Jim smiles and leans back to kiss him and his heart soars. "You'd manage."
"I would not," Olu protests as Jim leans back into him. "I'm supposed to be getting ready for this fuckery now, and look at me."
Jim turns. "I think I need a closer look."
"Do you now?"
Jim grins and kisses him softly. "I do. We have time for it."
"Do we?" Olu asks and peeks out from their room down the hall. Surely it's nearly time to get to the stage assembled in the jam room, and Stede doesn't tolerate tardiness to rehearsals, let alone the actual fuckery.
"No, but I won't make it through tonight if I don't get to enjoy you dressed like this now," Jim replies before bouncing away to shut and lock the door.
"Jim," Olu smiles and welcomes them back into his arms. "We'll get in trouble."
"Not if trouble gets into me first," Jim says.
"That's the dorkiest fucking thing you could have said," Olu giggles. "I love it. Is that my new nickname? Trouble?"
"For tonight maybe," Jim replies as they lead him towards the bed, pausing to kiss and grope on the way. "I could call you Captain too."
Olu lets out a completely involuntary moan and can feel the blush flooding his face.
"You're so fucking cute," Jim sighs happily. "Think Stede will notice if we get come on these at all?"
"I don't care," Olu says, and drops onto the bed. " Come here."
Jim straddles him and immediately grinds against his lace and mesh covered cock. The underwear is barely there to begin with, and it may as well not be now.
"Guys? Stede's asking everyone up a few minutes early," Lucius calls through the door with a sharp rapid knock. "So please finish up, or he'll just make me come back again."
"It is meant to be an erotic fashion show," Olu sighs as Jim climbs off of him with a frustrated groan. "Maybe we could keep a little of this going until we're all done and back here."
Jim nods. "The captains will probably applaud our creativity."
"Indeed," Olu says. "Let's go be creative then. See if we can't outdo whatever Lucius and Pete have planned."
"What about Ed and Stede?"
Olu shakes his head. If their previous moments of fuckery-related PDA are anything to go by, then that's a crown none of them will be able to steal.
"They've got the finale anyway; we can let them keep that spotlight. But we are absolutely gonna show everyone else up," Olu says.
He stands and takes Jim's offered hand as they head to the door, ready to put on the show of a lifetime.

How to Explain fake bags online to Your Grandparents
I suppose everybody has long been there, that instant of standing before a window Show, gawking at a good looking replica bag in the store window… It really is Just about hypnotic-like state, sometimes I’m not able to pull myself far from it! I signify, replica luggage guaranteed are stunning, and the high-excellent kinds far more so…It truly is why this subject’s generally a favorite when good friends And that i sit down for the chat.
Suffice it to state, it has been a while considering the fact that I to start with grew to become curious about duplicate bags. I bear in mind currently being incredibly identified to discover the proper bag that would be the right healthy for me. I had been seeking to purchase a bag that in shape me into a ‘T’, one that was sturdy, strong and wouldn't conveniently buckle in a few days. Ultimately I discovered a thing that caught my eye and I just understood that was the a person! Me and that bag experienced a link, of course!
I do think The trick to getting the ideal replica bag lies in getting the tolerance to search for the right one particular. It's really a little bit seeking to sift with the many bags that arrive in various models, products, colours, sizes and shapes accessible on the market. So I needed to set some perform into discovering the best 1, but it absolutely was worth it ultimately. I such as the leather kinds given that they glance sophisticated and past a lot longer when compared to the Other folks.
Then there is certainly the pattern. Now, this is very essential because it speaks volumes about your individual fashion. From curated models, specially crafted prints and luxe textures to vibrant geometrics, Every person should be capable to select a little something they find classy and trendy that matches their vibe and attitude. With each individual new masterpiece I uncover, my delight grows. The variety that duplicate bags present definitely shock me and mesmerize me simultaneously.
I constantly make sure to decide on top quality in advance of the rest. Genuine reproduction baggage are robust and sturdy, you don't need to get trapped carrying something which looks fashionable but quickly starts tattering absent with the seams. It is really essential to get the proper bag, so I identified to guarantee I bought a thing that would final in the many years, and I found an ideal fair-priced just one.
At this time, It really is like my replica bags online modest Mate that faithfully will come alongside wherever I'm going. It carries my trusty pen, songs player, tissue packs and a number of other required paraphernalia. The bag has long been with me For some time, nonetheless it still appears to be like very good as new. No surprise why reproduction baggage are getting to be A lot more well known, I guess people just want to have the most price out in their money.
fake bags
Effectively, my Close friend, I just purchased a stunning bag on the net, and I was so fired up to show it off for you. Of course I am no fashionista but I do know a pretend bag Once i see 1. It failed to take me very long to realise all wasn't what it appeared.
I began to question it the moment I saw it. There have been some rather noticeable notify-tale symptoms that it absolutely was a 'dud'. To begin with, it was just as well great for being true – it absolutely was way less expensive than you would probably anticipate it for being for its high quality and elegance. In addition the packaging was inadequate and the logos weren't in the correct position at all.
I started out owning 2nd ideas about this and that's when I made a decision to do a little research. Absolutely sure ample, Once i checked out the item pics on the web site, all of it commenced adding up. The stitching wasn't ideal, The brand was distinctive, and in some cases the straps were various from the way it's pictured on the website.
I had been gutted After i discovered I would been duped! I joined a handful of message boards to teach myself a tad more details on how to identify a bogus bag and it seems, it isn't really as difficult since it seems. From Understanding the main points within and out to finding out the insignificant variances in the best way It is sewn and even listening to the tags, there are absolutely ways to spot a bogus bag.
And all my problems did not conclusion there. For the reason that I might purchased it on-line, it had been unachievable to return it, so in the long run I just threw it away. It felt like the whole matter was an expensive and utterly pointless lesson.
However it designed me Believe a great deal about it, you know? It will require months, sometimes even several years, for these counterfeiters to ideal their craft and replicate designer baggage along with other products. It is an sector worth billions of bucks and it appears to be proper below our noses. There are many people available who will be willing to pay large dollars for a thing that will not be actual and that doesn't make them appear great.
It really is really thoughts-blowing how these fakes are so painstakingly set alongside one another and however persons nevertheless cannot place them! These knock-off retailers are popping up everywhere and they're carrying out a roaring trade. It truly is an uphill process looking to place an conclusion to them but recognition plays A serious part in this.
So, my friend, another time the thing is somebody carrying all over a 'designer bag', stand up near and personal with it and make Unquestionably absolutely sure Everything you're obtaining is the actual offer. Check that it is not some affordable duplicate – it could turn out costing you way over you bargained for.
Most people will tell you It is really only a designer bag but you ought to by no means acquire something at confront worth. The sole absolutely sure way to inform if It can be authentic is by inspecting it carefully. What appears to be like to become a small miscalculation can turn out earning a large variance, and what better way to stay away from any heartache than by making sure your bag is the actual point.
Information is power, and that's why I have done my research and shared it along with you. With any luck , this data may also help educate as many people as you possibly can and set an stop to these bogus bag scams, blocking upcoming heartache and fiscal losses.

The Top 10 of the '10s (Part 2)
Tumblr media
Last time I talked about the beginning of my top 10 of the 1910s, but I really only scratched the surface of what this decade has to offer. The top 4 are when these films start to get insanely good, you gotta see this stuff.
4. A Dog's Life (1918, dir. Charlie Chaplin)
Tumblr media
While Arbuckle developed a flavour of comedy that de-emphasizes story and themes, Chaplin was beginning to refine his style that married comedy and drama. It's rare to see a comedy where the world feels so cruel to the protagonist, but it makes you love him all the more. Comparing the life of a homeless man to a dog's is an easy way to quickly establish the groundwork in this short, and allows Chaplin to create tons of gags that not only tie into but elevate the dramatic center of the film. It's the kind of unified vision that elevated Chaplin above his competition and would push the industry forward to create more ambitious and meaningful stories.
There's a value placed on the love we have for one another that Chaplin emphasizes in a lot of his films. He makes you love the tramp and his dog first, to make sure you'll be properly disgusted when you see how society doesn't. Chaplin is able to graft a moral onto a comedy set-up so much more easily and effectively than so many other writers, even up to today. His style works because the comedy and tragedy come from the exact same place. Here it's the tramp's foolishness and polite society's indifference to suffering. Really all of Chaplin's best work comes from the hearts of humanity, and I think that's a major reason why he was able to have such international appeal while other stars, despite being funny, saw most of their success contained to America.
3. Intolerance: Love’s Struggle Throughout the Ages (1916, dir. D.W. Griffith)
Tumblr media
I'm not here to lecture you on D.W. Griffith's personal beliefs or other features, and I'm not here to talk about how he made this movie out of anger that people wouldn't tolerate his bigoted beliefs. I'm here to talk about Intolerance, the movie as it exists. And as it exists Intolerance is a towering achievement in filmmaking.
Intolerance is a grand film that works because of its specifics. It's a movie about small people in big worlds. Personally, a lot of film epics don't work for me because they function only as an epic. They are big and grand and feel like legendary adventures but... why? This style can be very self-indulgent, being more consumed in its own breadth than why it should be so encompassing. A good example of this is another film released two years before Intolerance called Cabiria. It's surely an impressive film with massive sets and some beautiful scope (Extensive use of a moving camera! Something still quite rare at the time), but it buckles under the weight of it all and ends up being a movie more about the military and setpieces of ancient Rome than it is actually about the main characters (So much so that I forgot the title even referred to a person until now). The epics that are able to stand above the rest are the ones that make a point of being an epic and use their style to tie into a greater thematic point that involves characters with a story you're invested in.
Movies cannot sustain themselves on scope alone. Intolerance understands that. The massive and rich world the characters inhabit is only ever a backdrop to their own personal struggles. The movie is also able to keep the audience's engagement through a bit of cheating on the structure of an epic, as this is more so several short films stitched together. We jump back and forth from story to story, and while they all structure into a central theme, they're all also their own self-contained narratives. And it works very well! Griffith's previous epic on this scale Birth of a Nation is (among other things) quite slow and plodding at points. Several filmmakers in the transition from shorts to features actually made films in this structure, I'm sure it was an easy way to learn how to adapt your storytelling to the longer runtime.
Here we get stories of intolerance across several time periods which gives us tons of variety and chances to explore the issue from different angles. It also cheats the epic structure by letting us have multiple epic setpieces running at once within the flow of the film. Even when characters are just talking and letting drama play out more naturally, we never stay in one place for too long and it allows it to keep the pacing of an epic while still having the conflicts of a drama. It's a very smart solution to a difficult problem that some filmmakers are still struggling to solve. And it never explodes all at once. The most impressive moments of the film are still paced specifically both within the larger film and the individual narratives. It allows the truly epic moments to leave an impact that continues to influence the story and colour your impressions of the other narrative. Intolerance: Love's Struggle Throughout the Ages is a film of multitudes that ultimately boils down to one idea: that love is something worth fighting for. Its ability to convey those both through large and small moments is what truly makes it work and deliver in a way that no film really has since. It crafts a story in a way that filmmakers can and should still learn from and try to understand.
2. J'Accuse! (1919, dir. Abel Gance)
Tumblr media
J'Accuse! is yet another epic, coming out of France right at the end of the decade. Abel Gance's later epics, Napoleon and La Roue, left behind an incredible legacy that you still see film fans commonly fawn over to this day, and while I'm sure they're very good, don't be too quick to dismiss this earlier effort as it still remains one of the most impressive and emotional war films ever made.
War both lifts illusions and creates new ones. The tremendous loss that surrounds the protagonists gives way to the love buried deep in their hearts. For a film that wants to expose the pointless horrors of war, surprisingly little time is spent on the front lines, with most of the film taking place in a village. However, we don't need to see the action of the battlefield, all we need to see is how it affects the common man, and the soldier returning home. J'Accuse! might be off-putting to some viewers for the simple reason that it's an incredibly angry film. Gance is accusing every man and woman who stood idle while evil men grew more powerful of dooming us all. He's accusing the very world we live in of being cruel and uncaring. It's not necessarily a nihilistic film, but rather an exploration of the circumstances that drive people towards nihilism. The scars that are cast upon the land and the people are felt in every frame of the film. People may try to push the atrocities out of their minds but they still linger, infesting their subconscious and haunting them. We can never truly escape the pain caused by the past, and trying to is both useless and selfish. The disease of war and cruelty needs to be addressed and treated, not left to worsen and infect more people.
If Intolerance was a movie about how important it is to create more love in our world, then J'Accuse! is a film about how important it is that we hold onto love. We cannot let it escape our grasp because it's all we really have. And like cruelty, it can be infectious and possible to wipe out. Humanity will only be truly doomed when we forget why love exists in the first place. Everything in J'Accuse! is incredibly fragile. Love is fragile, and so is hate, and so are states of mind, and so are our communities. We have to fight to protect what keeps us human but we must never lose sight of what it is we're fighting for. When we devolve into fighting for ego and glory, then we've lost sight. We've fallen more in love with ourselves than each other, and we're going to destroy everything one should hold dear.
The next post will probably be some other 1910s films of note as well as my number 1. That film is about a third of the length of either Intolerance or J'accuse! and I don't know if that means I'll have more or less to say about it...
