Sorry but I love the thought of trying to deny ascended Astarion something— maybe it's letting him feed on you, or maybe it's crawling into bed with him, just use your imagination— and he decides he won't take no for an answer anymore. He takes it upon himself to rectify your little mistake. You know, slowly advancing on you until you're back against a wall, with one pale hand caging you in place against his chest, the other coming up trace and prod at the swell of your lips with an eerie softness.

This gentleness doesn't last. Eventually, he forces the digits between your teeth, fingertips splaying across your tongue, gagging you with his fingers.

"Funny. I could have sworn you just told me no," He says, head cocked as he leans in. You can feel his lips against your neck, breath against the shell of your ear that sends a shiver rolling down your spine. An ivory fang plays at the curve of your throat, just enough to dimple the skin. "Surely, I must have misheard you. You'd never be foolish enough to do that, would you, little love?"

It really doesn't matter what you say. Whenever you try to respond, he presses his fingers down, scissoring them out over your tongue to silence you. All you can do is drool pathetically around them, looking up at him with pleading eyes.

"You're a clever girl. You'll do as I say, won't you? It's easier when you obey. You wouldn't want me to be forced to hurt you, would you?"

He still won't let you speak, pushing his fingers farther to dance at the precipice of your throat, reveling in the way it tightens when you panic (he'll remember that). He doesn't care what you have to say. He is only looking for one answer.

"Now, be a good girl and nod."

So, you nod, stricken with fear at his sudden shift. He removes his fingers from your mouth after a lingering moment of discomfort, wiping the viscous mess on your cheek. You breathe easy, thinking it's over-- only for him to pucker your sodden face in his hand, thumb digging callously into the soft of your jaw, grating gentle flesh against the sharp edges of your teeth. He bears down on you, those terrible red eyes a mirror into your own petrified reflection.

"There's a girl. Silly little thing. It's in your best interest to behave, don't you think? Don't you fret! I'm sure you know just how to make it up to me."

I guess there’s an alternative way to read it (there always is) but I actually think a Tav/Durge who kicks Ascended Astarion in the balls has managed the herculean feat of being way worse than the evil vampire lord.

It’s like this: you help him damn over 7,000 people to eternal torment in the hells, then agree to become his spawn. To celebrate, you guys have sex because now is the first time in months he feels safe enough to do so. And he feels safe with you, because you have always helped him, and he thinks you two are in agreement!

So after all that, you kick him in the balls and act like he’s the evil one?!

That’s an absolutely stone cold betrayal. Especially because it happens after sex. Especially if you think AA has just buried his trauma instead of healing from it! So to summarise… you assaulted your partner after sleeping with him under false pretences?! Cool, you just managed to make me take the evil guy’s side because that is way messed up.

Like damn, I would pitch a fit and leave too!

I do think there's technically writing critiques one could start to make about how most of the companions have a dichotomous "two possible endings" approach to their personal journeys (typically one that's more classically "bad" and one that's classically "good"; as in, the characters do more classically evil or good actions, not that there's a wrong branch to have.) however I DO so vibe with how coherent those two endings are when you play them out side by side specifically in terms of how they parallel each other, and the embedded character traits that were WITHIN these characters all along. it's not about a right choice so much as which character traits become more prominent and emerge more fully.

like for example, making Astarion the ascendant vampire directly teaches him that it IS power over all, and power IS the only way he will ever feel safe and secure, and as a result he becomes even more removed from others than he already was, and his need for superiority takes over all. you can teach Gale that he's ALREADY good and valuable and a full person without needing the highest of ambitions to prove himself, or you can teach him that he DOES need to aspire to godhood, actually. giving lae'zel new purpose and peeling back the propaganda she's been raised with all her life, pushing her to become that leader she always could be, aspiring to free her people, OR becoming the will of vlaakith, a dedicated soldier. none of these narratives are the "wrong" narrative or choice, they're just the ways a person can branch depending on the individual influencing them most, and paralleling them up is faaaascinating to see. especially when you can SEE the direct mirrors to their other branch (such as, for example, ascendant astarion refusing to even speak cazador's name and insisting he's all powerful and strong vs spawn astarion speaking openly about the aftermath of cazador and revenge, and admitting vulnerability, weakness, that revenge wasn't what he thought it would be)

do you mind? i'm very busy imagining spawn Astarion with the ability to polymorph into a bat and his darling druid tav who wildshapes into a raven both swooping through the golden and purple evening sky, ebony feathers gleaming in the setting sun, red eyes reflecting the first evening's stars, two winged creatures in love doing saltos and dancing in the clouds, falling down wings tucked in only to unfurl them mere inches before hitting the surface of the sea, causing the water to splash with the gusts of air from their wings, only for those falling droplets to reflect the sunset perfectly and create a magnificent rainbow that bat!astarion and raven!tav fly over - a rainbow bridge into a new tomorrow, a future free of worries, full of love and new possibilities.

then the sun sets, the stars come out and you watch a raven and a bat flutter off into the horizon, cawing and squeeking with glee. you don't know that these animals are soulmates in disguise, but something about the way they dance and zigzag through the purple skies tells you: they're in love.
