An outsider could say I put Mark on a pedestal, but I've always been very aware that he's not perfect and really just another human, I just happen to love him a lot for the human he is, haha. As time's passed, my vision of him has become healthier though (not to say it ever reached the "unhealthy" threshold); it's gotten easier for me to judge him and stuff like that. I think an obsession crosses the line when you put on rose-tinted glasses to look upon someone and entirely ignore their flaws, or if you try to invade their personal lives, ex. being one of those creeps that loiter outside their houses and stuff. If you were to pursue a career in photography and had the opportunity and means to photograph whatever you wanted, what would most like to photograph? Ah, livin' the dream. If I had to choice and would be paid well regardless of focus, I would absolutely travel and photograph the local nature/wildlife. Is there a certain type of clothing (outerwear, activewear, loungewear, etc.) that you enjoy shopping for more than others? Shirts, 100%. Are you ever afraid to post your ideas, artwork, photography, etc. online for fear that they will get stolen or not credited? When it comes to OCs, yes, given that things have been stolen from me before. Photography doesn't worry me much because I don't think I'm good enough for someone to possibly want to steal it (and besides, I use a watermark), and I do the same for drawings. We sat down with Zach Sutton (bassist and keyboardist) to discuss Bambi, music videos, and more shortly before the band played a sold out show at the Novo in downtown Los Angeles.

OTW: Over a year ago, we sat down with Jake Luppen (lead singer and guitarist) to talk about your debut album and touring. Did you see yourself here then?  

Sutton: No, I don’t think I did. None of us did. I don’t want to sound egotistical, but it has been pretty meteoric. In terms of our definition of that. We were playing the Echoplex three years ago. If someone told me then that we’d be playing, and selling out, this venue, that is ten times as big, I’d just be like, “Wow, okay.” Really grateful for everything we’ve been afforded and happy to keep going.

OTW: In the year since you released your debut album, Landmark, you dropped your sophomore album, Bambi, and it is amazing. How does the feeling of creating and releasing Bambi compare to that of Landmark?

Sutton: Yeah, very different processes for each album. The first one, Landmark, kind of aligned with our old writing method where we all just got in a room, someone had an idea, and we’d just kind of explore the song from there. With Bambi, like in the Landmark process, we learned a lot about recording and producing, so when we got to Bambi we had started splintering off, chasing ideas more individually. You know, finishing them on the computer, recording them, then sharing with the group. Then it’d be like more of a collaborative process in the back end. It was creatively challenging to finish Bambi that way, but really fulfilling as well to explore more of the creating process.

OTW: Since you guys did work very individually on this album, what was the overarching inspiration? Was there one thing that inspired you all?

Sutton: Yeah, a lot of what we write about now is the way we feel. A lot of what we’re inspired by and what we want to talk about now is the way we feel–mentally, physically, and socially. Especially about how things have changed from when we were just a smaller band to now and how that’s affected us. Not in an egotistical way, but in a “we’re experiencing these mental blocks and hopefully someone can feel and experience that too.” So, a lot of the songs on Bambi, like “Anxious,” “Why Even Try,” and “Thinking of Others,” are just about the patience you have to have with yourself and we all felt that pretty unanimously.

OTW: What is your favorite song, lyrically, and what’s your favorite line from that song?

Sutton: I think my favorite is from “Bubbles,” like the really loud part. No one can understand what anyone is saying there, but the whole lyric is “wish I could say I was a better friend to you then.” I think, personally, I have a lot of regrets about the way that I’ve handled my friendships in the context of being away from home. I’m not a very good communicator, so it’s like I feel obligated to stay in contact with people, but it’s tough.

OTW: Since you are always on the road touring, away from home, what has been your favorite song to perform live?

Sutton: I really enjoy playing “Bambi” because it’s fun and challenging. “Why Even Try” is also really good. It’s pretty depressing. I don’t know. The lyrics are really self loathing. Whenever we play those [depressing] songs, or at least when I play those songs, I get into a headspace and I think about why we wrote that song. “Why Even Try” is pretty depressing, but I think it’s nice to have that catharsis.

OTW: Out of all your songs that have videos, what has been your favorite music video to create?

Sutton: We hate doing music videos. We’ve tried so many times to come up with a good idea and bring it to the team. They’re like, “Okay, maybe,” and it turns out they change it a lot and we try really hard, but whatever. I think the one I’m most happy with is “Buttercup” because we almost had nothing to do with it. An animator, Noah Farrar, really talented animator went with it, did his thing, and it turned out great. “Bambi” was also pretty good. It was a little bit our idea, but it was mostly Kyle Saucer.

OTW: In the interview last year, you guys said your favorite show was Lollapalooza. Has this changed?

Sutton: Lollapalooza was really really fun. We played Red Rocks, just as an opener, but even then still great. Recently, we just had two hometown shows in St. Paul. Coming home is always relieving for us. Hometown show: everyone comes out, its all the friends, and it’s a real rewarding experience to come back to where we started it all.

OTW: Going off of that, what do you prefer? Your own headlining shows or the big festivals?

Sutton: Well, it depends on the festival. We played Bonnaroo two years ago and it was so great. I mean Bonnaroo has a great atmosphere, great vibe, so it’s hard to beat that. But, you can curate a space at a venue, like your own headlining show, a little better, so it’s more intentional. When you go see a band, they’ve kind of doctored everything to be the way they want it to be, but at a festival, it’s at the will of the weather and the vibe. They’re both good.

OTW: So, at all these shows, you’re probably seeing thousands of fans every week. What has been your favorite, or craziest, fan experience?

Sutton: I don’t know if this is appropriate, but we were playing in Phoenix, not this tour, but a couple years ago. Inappropriately, they dropped off this goodie bag of gifts and I was like, “Oh, that’s so sweet of you!” We open it and there are some good gifts, like a Rupert Holmes vinyl and a Catch shirt, but then there’s just a bunch of butt plugs. And I was like, “Uhhh… thanks, I guess?” We left them at the venue.

OTW: So… it wasn’t band bonding time?!

Sutton: No, it wasn’t actually. We left them ALL there.

OTW: What is your favorite bonding thing to do together?

Sutton: When we’re on tour, we love just chilling. We usually go to a bar and find something interesting in the city that we’re in. On tour, we usually try to watch a movie series. We watched all of Harry Potter last time and we’re trying to watch all of Star Wars now. At home, we’re always working on music.

OTW: Besides the butt plugs, what has been the craziest thing to happen to you guys as a whole?

Sutton: I think we all have different definitions of what crazy means, but this wasn’t even a thing. It was just a horrible fucking day. We played in Cannes, France, for this thing. I don’t know why. Either way, we stayed up really late, got really drunk, and got like three hours of sleep because we had to leave the next day. We woke up super hungover and tried to take a taxi to the airport, but there were taxi strikes because of the Je Suis Taxi thing, because they’re all mad about Uber, so the taxi drivers literally blocked off the airport entrance. So, we had to carry all our gear like a mile to the airport. We took a thirteen-hour flight back to JFK, I missed all the meals because I was sleeping, got to JFK, and there was a three-hour wait for customs. Then, we had to get our bags, recheck them in, and it was just the longest day ever and I was really mad at everyone.

OTW: That sounds absolutely awful. The things you do for your fans! Is there anything you want them to know?

Sutton: Thanks for listening. Thanks for sticking with us. We’re always writing more music, and we always have something coming out. We don’t have anything planned, but there’s definitely a lot of music in the works.

OTW: From all of that, who are three Ones To Watch we should keep our eye on?

Sutton: Sure Sure - they opened for us on our last big tour and they’re from LA, and they’re awesome. The band opening up for us right now; they’re amazing. They released their newest album probably half a year ago. Cavetown is really good. Oh, also Field Medic.

it's a friday night, we went to station51 @ clarke quay to celebrate yy's birthday-

i asked for your opinions on what to wear and sent you a photo of what i was gna wear and you said i could wear anything and so i did. we met under your block and i saw you while i was walking towards you. you looked so good even from afar.

we waited for xav and we took the bus to the mrt to go to dhoby ghaut to meet wx. we ate dinner before going to the bar. you made me sit beside you and away from the rest of the dudes. you made me laugh, a lot.

when we reached the bar, you sat with me and anytime when someone pours me a drink, you'd taste it first just to make sure it's not too strong for me. you'd always check on me to ensure that i'm ok and i'm not drunk. you made me feel safe.

before we left, this other girl was clinging on you so bad and when i saw you, i was pretending that i wasnt looking but even tho i was quite pissy, i still decided to trust that you were just being nice since she was tipsy. i saw the way you looked at me and how your hands were away from her, deep down inside, i was glad.

when we were walking to the pick up point, you held my hand and made sure i was walking okay. the other girl was tryna get your attention and was throwing herself onto you but you still came back for me and held me back. we board the cab and i was lying on your thigh. i felt safe and i knew i was safe. the way you caressed my face and pat my head to soothe me, i could never forget. when you texted my mom to reassure her that im otw home, i saw a different side of you. every time the cab jerks, you'd always catch me so i dont slip away.

when we reached my block, you sent me to my doorstep and even made sure i was gna be okay. the lift stopped at level 4 instead of 7, i stumbled, you grabbed me by my waist and got me balanced again. we took the lift to level 7 and you held my hand to the doorstep, unlocked the door and brought me into my house, greeted my mom and once again, assured her that im in good hands.

Discussing Butt Plugs, Music Videos, and ‘Bambi’ with Hippo Campus [Q&A]

and when you saw him ordering alcohol, you just couldn’t believe him

you hated the smell of alcohol and all you wanna do now is to ditch woojin and head home

moreover, woojin is way taller and heavier than you

“you better thank me for not leaving you there” you warned as you passed him to the guards

after that day, you hardly went out with woojin

you know that things will never work out between you and him

so you thought you shouldn’t waste any more time 

there’s not even once that woojin thank you or even appreciated you

you know you’re not going to choose him to be your husband anyway 

finally the week ended and it is time to meet jihoon 

but when it is your turn to date jihoon

it feels like you’re in a new world 

it is completely different from the week when you went out with woojin

jihoon is totally like a gentleman

not only that, he has so many different sides of him

everything that jihoon did is something that you probably won’t experience with woojin 

when you’re with woojin, you wish time could fast forward

but when you’re with jihoon, you want time to slow down

you wish the day could be longer 

and after the day has ended, it is time to head home 

just before you guys head back to your own room, he abruptly stopped you 

“you will give me a chance right, y/n?” jihoon asked as he held your held 

you nodded without hesitation

“thank you” he said as he lands a loving kiss on your forehead 

“how sure are you that she will pick you, she might change her decision” the both of you immediately turned to the voice 

“woojin, there’s no way that i will change my decision” you explained

“the war is not over, park jihoon” woojin threatened

without thinking so much, the 3 of you went to your own room 

your mind wondered off and somehow, you recalled what woojin said 

“what did he say that when he is not even interested in me last week?” you frown

“whatever, i will still choose jihoon regardless” with that, you fell asleep 

little did you know, everything changed

to be exact, park woojin changed

when you got out of your room, you smelled something nice from the kitchen 

and when you thought your eyes are playing tricks on you but nah

“i made breakfast for you, y/n” you jumped when woojin speak 

“this is so sudden but thank you” you smiled at the sight of your favorite english breakfast 

after what happened last night, woojin seemed to step up his game 

he started talking more 

he even complimented you early in the morning 

and in the afternoon, he even offered to shop with you

“you’re coming with me” with that, he dragged you into his car

this is when you found yourself in danger

you always love seeing guys driving with just one hand on the steering wheel 

and that is exactly what park woojin is doing 

when you tried to peek at woojin once in a while, you never realized how defined his jawline is 

and with that sun shining on him, your feelings started swaying

“stop looking at me, y/n” 

“w-who says i’m looking at you” you blushed

you thought that is the only heart fluttering moment with woojin? 

when you’re with woojin the whole day, your heart is busy beating fast 

how can woojin change so much in a day? 

“what exactly is happening...” you sighed 

you guys soon got home and when you stepped in the house, jihoon is already at the sofa waiting for you 

“where have you been?” he rushed to your side 

“y/n was with me, is there any problem?” woojin stood beside you

“don’t hang out with him, okay? just stay by my side” jihoon said as he pulled you to him 

“stay by your side? y/n can choose who she wants to be with” with that, woojin pulled you away from jihoon

“get your hands off her, she is not yours to begin with” jihoon argued

“she isn’t yours too!” woojin pushed jihoon

just shortly within a second, the both of them started breaking out into a fight

they are just busy punching each other’s faces 

while there’s you, who is too shocked to do anything 

but the moment you see woojin’s lips bleeding, you finally could react 

“please stop hitting him, jihoon” you shut your eyes while standing in between them 

looking at how badly their face is bruised, you could only sigh 

the best you could do is to mend their wounds

to stop them from fighting, you decided to go to their room and separate them 

“why did you get into fight” you asked as you apply medication onto his bruises

“because of you, i don’t want to lose you to jihoon, especially not after yesterday” 

as if it is on cue, you froze while hearing his answer 

woojin then took your hands into his

“i know from last week’s date, you hated me but i promised i will change, for you” 

“seeing how happy when you’re with jihoon... makes me feel like a loser, i was jealous that the reason behind your smile is jihoon and not me” 

“i promise you, i’ll change” with that, woojin sealed his promise with a kiss 

all of a sudden, you found your emotions all over the place

even when you’re at jihoon’s room, mending his wounds 

you’re still busy thinking about woojin and everything he said 

you eventually got back to your room, feeling as confused as ever 

you know you said that you will never consider woojin... but here you are, thinking about woojin 

and honestly, everything he said makes you want to trust him once more 

you wish you have a little more time to think about it 

but sadly, the time has come 

you have to make your decision 

because of that, you barely had a wink of sleep 

clearly because one person is lingering in your mind, non-stop

soon, it is lunchtime and that’s when everyone gathered

“honey, have you made up your mind?” your mom started 

this is harder than you thought

“and the person that i’m choosing is... woojin” 

woojin is the one that kept running in your mind and whenever you thought about jihoon

a feeling of guilt is telling you it is a wrong choice

something in you tells you that you will probably regret letting woojin go

4: Talk about the thing you regret most so far.

- The one thing I regret the most was how I handled losing my first horse. When I lost him, that was the start of my depression & other mental illnesses. 

10: Talk about the biggest fight you've ever had.

- Biggest fight I've probably had was in Myrtle Beach when we all went there after prom. lmfao myrtle beach is ruined because of that whole memory.  

14: Talk about a vacation.

- Every summer when we go to our beach house, there’s so many pelicans that sit in the bay and they’re literally the most prettiest creatures ever and i really don’t get why I’m so obsessed with pelicans.

also this past summer that we went to the beach house, I got too wine-drunk the night before we were suppose to go to the aquarium and in the morning i was so hung over in the morning that I threw up otw to the aquarium and had to go home :-) but it was groovy because J & I went the next day!!

Should you be doing something now? I could be doing the practice exam work my math professor gave us all considering it's extra credit, but. Yeah. I'm absolutely awful at math and barely passing but I don't exactly need another stressor right now. Is there a smoke detector on every floor of your house? We only have one floor. I tried vegetable soup anyway when I got my tongue pierced because I literally could not eat solids for over a week, but I'm a picky asshole who didn't like it so wasted the can. I had to survive almost exclusively on meal replacement shakes and popsicles. Warning from the wise: you want your tongue pierced? You better fucking want it bad because healing is a P R O C E S S. Or at least mine was, having to get it re-done and all... Have you ever had to do a class in summer school? No. Have you ever went a year without getting your hair cut? So we get this nigga in the mall security vehicle (you know the one that does circles around the mal @15mph all day errday.?)
