Almost 10 years ago now, I took a trip to Germany. While I was there I went to Bavaria and saw some castles. Hohenschwangau and Neuschwanstein are practically across from each other. Neuschwanstein is the castle Cinderella’s (and this Disney’s entire logo) was based on, but fun fact: it was never finished, never lived in. It felt hollow and lifeless to me.

Across the way was a real castle, Hohenschwangau. I’m sure I could find the fuller backstory, but the version in their booklet was that a Bavarian prince, only a few hundred years ago, was wandering and discovered it abandoned and decided to live there. He was also obsessed with swans (hence both names), but that’s not relevant here.

I stood in rooms that people had actually lived in and that were beautifully decorated but with that fairytale stone in the background and decided right then I wanted to adapt that castle into Halara, which was just the barest story idea at the time.

Well today I finally got to start describing those rooms in a book and it’s thrilling and a like surreal!
