CIRCUS ~ CHAPTER 2
Pairing: Hwang Hyunjin x OC
Genre: Circus AU, murder mystery, slowburn
Warnings: Blood, injuries, mental problems, enemies to lovers?
Word count: 2,7k
Synopsis: A series of murders in a successful circus disturbs the life of a young stylist. With no place to go, she is keen on saving the circus, even if that means risking her own life to do so. As if things cannot go worse, a group of newbies join the hawock, seemingly not knowing what they're getting themselves into. Can she figure out the motives of the murderer and keep her crew together? Can the circus survive under the growing pressure and distrust?
Note: This is the first story I am publicly sharing. It is a work of fiction, although it may not fit the criteria of a traditional fanfic (I physically cannot write in the second-person narrative). Therefore, English is not my first language, and while I'm pretty fluent, I still make grammar errors, so apologies in advance.
The story is vaguely inspired by Circus MV
A huge tent is up. Standing proudly like a medieval castle. Everything is planned out and in place. The show is in an hour. That's when Nadya comes in clutch. As a stylist, she does a lot at the last minute. There are always malfunctions, and so on. She cannot rest.
Her workshop is in a well-lit corner of the tent. She just finished the last dancer's makeup. There are like thirty of them, so her hands are about to fall off. She glances and finds a little girl waiting for her turn. "Jihyun. You want me to match your makeup to your silks again?"
The little girl nods. One thing about our circus is that they like change. They experiment. This time, the theme is red and black. And although she doesn't enjoy red lipstick on a little girl, this time she will have to make it work.
Nadya finishes up quickly, lets the girl glance at her first, and makes sure she is satisfied. The girl grins, which can only mean one thing. "Good luck, Jihyun!" Nadya shouts before the girl can run away.
Her job for today is done. So now she can just poke her head out of the tent and enjoy the performances. The crowd is huge. She isn't even sure when they grew so big. Now she doesn't know how to continue. How to keep this up, but she will try. Nothing is permanent. One wrong step, and everything collapses, but she is not letting this circus collapse.
The lights go off as soon as the show is about to start. Then a single light lights up, and Amir shows up. One thing that stays consistent. The ringmaster starts the show. And Amir knows how to put one on.
As she is standing aside, enjoying the performance, she suddenly sees a familiar face. That Chan guy. He decided to come with his entire pack. They make eye contact, and now she has no choice but to greet them properly.
"Hi," she mutters to Chan, who gets pushed up front by force. Some of the guys are glaring at her intensity, having no clue who the girl is.
Chan smiles like an idiot, too wide. No one is ever that happy to see her. "The show is great," he announces, watching a little girl roll down her silks with grace.
"Thanks. Glad you could come," she says in an absurd attempt to match his enthusiasm. Nadya was not expecting to talk with them by herself; she's not as good with her words as Jun is.
"Me too. We are busy all the time, so it's nice to have some time off," Chan explains. Nadya looks at the guys, wondering what could be the thing that keeps them so occupied. Maybe she's better off not knowing, so she doesn't ask. "I was expecting to see you over there," Chan points to the stage.
Nadyas eyes widen with the words; somehow, just the idea of going onto that stage terrifies her. "Not my thing. I prefer the work behind the scenes," she replies.
"What do you do?"
"I mainly do makeup. "It's something I personally enjoy, and my work is silently admired; there's nothing more I can ask for," the girl shrugs. Not a lie, but not the truth either. Her teacher's words telling her she has potential are still vivid, making her question what she could have done if she pursued her dreams.
"Whatever makes you happy," Chan says, closing the topic.
His dismissive words sting for no apparent reason. The girl doesn't get why Chan questions whether she is happy with her job. She is. She is a coward. The coward's place is behind the scenes, and besides, she gets to do what she loves most. Create art.
Suddenly, Jun's head pops out of the dressing room. He waves to the guys before motioning for Nadya to come.
She is saved. Nadya excuses herself before disappearing behind a curtain. "What?"
Jun is way too giddy to be serious. That makes Nadya's fingers twitch with the urge to choke the guy. "I couldn't let you steal my man," he winks. An absurd response she should have expected. Whether he is just teasing her or is jealous, she will never know.
"Not my man," the girl says, rolling her eyes.
"Actually. Allen was looking for you. He ruined his shirt with wine or something," he explains.
Nadya sighs. It sounds like typical Allen. A mime that moves with incredible coordination can't hold a glass. Ironic.
"Tell him to put that shirt in the wash; I'll find another," Nadya commands and runs off. There are no bland shirts left, so a half-white, half-black shirt will have to do the job. It's not like she can remove stains that fast. She spots her coworker and helps him button up the shirt. Without her help, his clumsy fingers would take hours. "You owe me coffee," she says, patting Allen's shoulder playfully.
Allen is an awkward guy; even now, he barely cracks a smile. He is just built like that; no one questions it. "Coffee is not good for you. How about I treat you to a meal?"
A bold statement for Allen: "Is that wine getting to your head?"
He smiles almost shyly. "Maybe. I just had to ease my nerves a bit," Allen says, stuffing his hands in his pockets. Nadya can relate; you have to either be drunk or a bit mentally ill to get on that stage. Alcohol is liquid courage. Good for motivation.
"Well, you better not throw up out there," the girl comments half-jokingly.
"God, no, it's not that bad."
Suddenly, Kenna appears out of nowhere. "Nadya, could you spray my face with something? I'm sweating and the makeup is melting off," she complains.
Nadya looked at her closely; she had never witnessed that before. Kenna specializes in tricks with fire. Sure, it gets hot, but she's not usually that flushed. "Sit, I'll see what I can do," prompts Nadya, who strolls to her desk. She dabs a puff of powder before pressing it into the performer's skin. She is about to look cakey, but from afar, no one will notice.
Nadya frowns. It's not her best look. "I did my best," she announces after a brief examination. Sometimes she has to settle for practicality instead of looks.
Kenna barely glances at the mirror. "Thanks, you're a lifesaver!"
"I'm just doing my job. Why are you sweating this much?" The girl decides to pry. Curiosity is a silly trait her mother always lectured her for.
"Never done such a big show; I'm a bit nervous."
Those words confuse Nadya. Kenna is one of the most confident performers. If she is nervous, then how are others? Who is she to judge, though? "Reasonable. I could never. You have some guts," shrugs Nadya.
Then Nadya noticed one of the animal trainers looking around for something. Kenna runs off, and Nadya approaches the woman. "Looking for something?"
"Dear god! You almost gave me a heart attack," the bird trainer complains. Elis is in charge of the doves, and yet she is searching through clothing cabinets. "Have you seen my gloves by any chance? Doves made such a mess I have to clean up before their feathers get dirty."
"No, but I'm sure there's some in the medical kit," Nadya announces and walks away. To see the show. Jun is about to perform.
Nadya approaches her knight in shining armor. "You missed so much," Chan exaggerates. She can see why Jun is into him. Their enthusiasm is charming.
"There's nothing that I haven't seen," she replies smugly. "Jun is about to perform."
On those words, Jun walks out with a charming smile. The juggling starts. Each time he catches a ball at the last second, the crowd gasps. That only makes Jun smirk. He is not only a cocky bastard but also her best friend.
Chan leans towards the girl. "He is good."
"Can't disagree."
The performance ends, and the juggler bows to a roaring audience. The guys seemed to enjoy the performance as well. Nadya is glad Jun is getting the recognition he deserves. She is feeling like a proud mother, although Jun is a few months older.
A soft tune starts playing in the background, signaling that it's break time. Some go and buy popcorn, some rush to the toilet, and Nadya runs around doing errands.
She comes back after a while, and Chan approaches her. "I haven't introduced you to the guys," he states.
Nadya glances at the guys briefly and smiles. She was not planning on getting familiar, but now she can't run, can she?
Chan gestures to a buff guy first, and he looks intimidating enough for the girl to go mute. "Alright, the short one on the left is Changbin."
Changbin puffs his chest at the mention. "Don't forget to mention my muscles."
"Sure," Chan rolls his eyes. "Anyway next to him is Jeongin. Our youngest," he waves at the girl shyly. "The blonde one is Felix."
"Nice to meet you," he chimes, extending an arm for the girl to shake. She shakes it but still eyes Felix suspiciously. He has a surprisingly deep voice that doesn't fit in with his boyish features.
"He was also raised in Australia," Chan adds. "The one staring too hard is Jisung. Don't mind him; it's a bit too much for him," he points at the guy who redirects eye contact immediately.
"Well, no one in our team bites. I can't say that about the tigers, though," Nadya utters in a surprisingly sassy manner.
"Tigers?" Jisung perks up.
The girl smiles innocently. "Whoopsie, spoilers."
"The brooding one next to him is Minho. He's just not good with new people. The one next to him is Seungmin, and the long-haired one is Hyunjin," he announces.
Nadya scans the guys, trying to recall their names. Unfortunately, with no luck. Her eyes are on the guy who glared at her on New Year's Eve; now she can return the gesture.
The sound of Amir's voice snaps her out of their thoughts, and she claps her hands, rocking on her heel. "Well, nice to meet you all. Since Jun is done, I think he will be more than happy to keep you company while I have matters to attend to. I'll be off," she smiles before disappearing behind the curtain. Now she will be able to breathe without eight pairs of eyes on her.
Jun approaches Nadya suddenly. "Was I cool?"
The girl rolls her eyes playfully. "Incredibly. Now go say hi to your crush," she ushers him off.
Distressed Miguel enters. "Did anyone see one of my knives? It is missing."
Misha groans while stretching and preparing for her stunt. She might as well be the most flexible person Nadya knows. "Maybe if you'd stop using them as butter knives, they wouldn't go missing," she taunts the man.
"I did put it back after. Now it's not on the rack," he complains.
Don't you have spare ones?" Nadya chimes.
He thinks. "I do, but I still need to find that one. It's expensive," he complains again.
"Treat them with care if they are so valuable," Nadya comments, and Misha high-fives her.
"I value them by not letting dust collect on a shelf," he argues, and Nadya just backs up in defense. She doesn't want to be on the blacklist of a guy who wields knives.
Someone's phone starts ringing and scares the group. Nadya stares at it, hesitating wherever she should answer. It's an unknown number. She decides not to and walks to the kitchen. "Someone left their phone on my desk; it was ringing," she announces.
Adele almost chokes on her food. She always goes onto the stage full. It doesn't just relieve her stress; it also weighs her down. Nadya doesn't believe in her bit, but if it works, it works. "I swear to God, I'm so stressed. Did you answer it?"
Nadya shakes her head. "Was it someone important?"
"No, probably just my boyfriend. He got a new number recently," she answers. "Where did I leave the phone again?
"On my desk."
"Right, your desk."
Nadya doesn't like being in the presence of eight men, so she doesn't come out backstage again and decides to snack.
That's when Azara appears right after her performance, still holding her hoops under her arm. She pants heavily as she sits down in front of Nadya. "The performance flew by. It's still unreal," she excitedly tells her coworker.
"Yeah, it's an honor to be performing in front of such crowds," agrees Nadya.
"That, but also the money. Can you imagine what else we could do? I hope we earn a good vacation after the tour ends," she sighs and leans back in her chair.
"I don't know what I would do if I had free time," Nadya shrugs.
"There is a lot to do. We could go somewhere together. Just us girls," she offers happily. Everyone is happy with the praise they're getting, but for how long can they keep it up? With exposure comes responsibility.
"What are you girls up to?" smiles the ringmaster, still in his long coat. He may have a break, but he has to close the show too.
"We were talking about the future," Dreamily sighs Azara.
"The future is bright! Even more so if we stop holding back," Amir claims.
"Holding back?" Nadya points out.
"We could perform overseas. Tour America," explains Amir cheerfully. "I just need to sort some stuff out first."
"We are about to get that full-world tour," Araza smiles. Even Nadya can't help but match the enthusiasm; it's contagious.
This day should last forever. Everyone is so happy. Nadya is finally at home. With the people she adores and her job, she looks forward each time.
The lights go out as the show ends. The performers all come to the stage to bow. The end of day one is successful; now all they have to worry about is that each day goes like this one.
Jun comes backstage and engulfs Nadya in a crushing hug. She would normally push him away, but this time, she let him enjoy the moment. If he is happy, she is happy. Soon another pair of arms loops around them, and they're soon trapped in a big group hug.
Nadya pulls a bit and scrunches her nose at Jun. "You stink," she comments. Everyone is so sweaty, and now she is sweaty too.
He just ruffles his friend's hair. "Let's have a drink!" he suddenly announces. He eyes Jihyun. "Not you. You'll have plenty of time to do that when you're older."
Jihyun looks at him smugly. She is not as innocent as she looks. She steals the alcohol when everyone gets drunk enough to not care.
"We are missing Mr. Orlo. Somebody get him," announces Amir as he shrugs his coat off.
Misha runs off. The drinks spread around the room. Soon, a shot ends up in Nadya's hand. She downs it without thinking. Alkohol doesn't taste that bad. People are dramatic.
Rushing footsteps echo through the tent. Misha gasps as she tries to take a breath.
"What's wrong?" Questions Taraji. Their self-proclaimed mother. She's good with people. Perks of training animals.
"Mr. Orlo," she gasps out.
"Did he forget his medicine again?" asks Taraji.
Misha shakes her head. Everyone is confused, and Miguel is the first to move. He moves towards the boss's office. Nadya follows closely behind, but at the doorway, he just stops. Nadya has no choice but to look over his shoulder.
She wishes she hadn't. The sight she sees is pure horror. Her boss is slumped over his desk. A knife is sticking out of his back, and blood is pooling around his boots.
Nadya stumbles backward. Jun slips his hand into hers for comfort, although he is equally, if not more, disturbed. All Nadya sees is red.
Suddenly, everyone starts rushing. Calling the police and the ambulance, Nadya can only stand there, trying to wake up from that awful nightmare. Maybe she is not meant to get her happily ever after.
