The iPhone may get a big dose of AI this year. Here's what to expect.
See on Scoop.it - Design, Science and Technology
"Apple's iOS 18 update will likely be full of new AI features ..."
Artificial intelligence and machine learning have played an important role in the iPhone for years, powering features like Portrait Mode for the camera and the ability to copy and paste text from photos. But at Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference, we're expecting to learn about how Apple could take that to the next level by potentially bringing generative AI to the iPhone.
Generative AI, or AI models trained on large volumes of data that create content in response to prompts, has exploded in popularity following the success of ChatGPT. Tech giants such as Microsoft, Google, Samsung and Amazon, among many others, have introduced generative AI into their biggest products over the past year. Apple, however, has been quiet about its plans for generative AI, although CEO Tim Cook teased updates for 2024.

The iPhone 13 is faster, has a bigger battery, and gets a new camera sensor that captures more light (with support for new video features as well). Along with more storage options, it also incorporates all the new features of iOS 15. And it’s been my primary device for just a little over 24 hours! And I thought now would be a good time to share my first impressions of the new iPhone 13.
Recycled design, underwhelming display
The display used on the iPhone 13 is, perhaps, the least exciting feature of the device. But I think it still deserves to be highlighted simply because of the upgrades that it has received over the 2020 model. Even with the ‘upgrades,’ note that the phone (still) lacks a high refresh rate display – a feature that is now common even on mid-range Androids. And this is glaringly obvious when you use the phone for the first time.
The OLED display used on the iPhone 13 is the same size as its predecessor. It measures 6.1 inches across and has a resolution of 1,170 x 2,532 pixels. One thing that is definitely noticeable is the notch used for the sensor array, which is now 20% smaller. That’s a significant size reduction.

The notch on the iPhone 13 is noticeably smaller compared to last year’s model / © NextPit
However, not all apps are adapted to the new size, which causes some videos in 18:9 format to show a small tooth of the notch out of the indentation margin. That being said, watching videos on streaming services like Apple TV+ and Amazon Prime video was not a problem, and this issue was only noticeable on YouTube.
While the display still refreshes at 60Hz, I do admit that the OLED panel is of good quality and that it offers deep blacks. The iPhone 13’s display is also exceptionally bright. All this makes the usually mundane job of surfing the internet pretty exciting. Even without high refresh rate, it is a great screen to consume content.

A display with standard refresh rate, but excellent brightness and deep blacks / © NextPit
The resized notch aside, very little has changed as far as the front of the iPhone 13 is concerned. In fact, the same can be said of the phone’s overall design, which is highly reminiscent of last year’s iPhone 12. This is by no means a negative thing, and on the contrary, this makes the phone – at least in my opinion – very beautiful and elegant. However, the increased battery capacity does make the phone a bit thicker and heavier than the iPhone 12 so forget using iPhone 12 cases on the iPhone 13.

The cameras are aligned diagonally now and mark the difference between the iPhone 13 and iPhone 12 / © NextPit
The big exception is the camera module, which no longer brings the lenses aligned, but diagonally. This is due to the size of the wide-angle camera sensor, which is larger. I believe this is the fastest way to differentiate this year’s model from last year’s.
The iPhone 13 is also IP68 rated for water and dust resistance. In the past 24 hours, I also noticed that the glass-clad rear panel of the iPhone 13 is a massive fingerprint magnet.
Excellent performance, as always
The iPhone 13 totes Apple’s brand new A15 Bionic processor, which on paper claims to be 50% faster than the current leading competitor. The graphics performance also sees a boost and is now claimed to be 30% faster than its immediate rival. Our interpretation is that Apple is referring to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 here – which – as you know, is the most powerful processor in existence for Android smartphones.
Despite this claim, in day-to-day life, it isn’t easy to prove this. However, there is no denying that the iPhone 13 offers excellent performance. However, there is always this nagging feeling in the back of your mind about how ‘smoother’ the phone would have felt with a 120Hz display.
And one more thing.; in 2021, Apple has finally removed the 64 GB version of the phone. You can now only buy the phone in 128, 256, and 512 GB variants.
On the software front, the update to iOS 15 has brought more consistency to the system. It is easier to use the Safari browser, the Focus mode offers the possibility of having fewer interruptions, and FaceTime has expanded video conversations with people who do not own an Apple device. On the privacy front, features like Live Text, text, and image recognition are all done on the device itself without data being sent elsewhere.
Thanks to Apple A15 Bionic chip, the iPhone 13 now gets enhanced image processing capabilities, support for a bunch of AI-related features, and overall impressive performance in everyday tasks.
As outlined earlier, I penned this quick hands-on after spending a mere 24 hours with the iPhone 13. You will learn more about how the phone behaves in the long run when I complete the full review of the phone.
The main camera is the highlight
Besides performance and battery life, the iPhone 13 certainly stands because of its camera capabilities. Without mystery, Apple opted for a dual-camera setup that includes a 12MP wide-angle camera and another 12MP sensor mated to an ultra-wide lens. Pertinent to note is that the main (wide-angle) camera, inherited from the iPhone 12 Pro Max, uses a sensor that can capture 47% more light than the iPhone 12 – and this naturally means better photos at night!
More than that, we have more stability in videos thanks to Sensor-Shift Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) technology. In OIS by sensor shift, the camera sensor moves to compensate for minor shakes, thereby leading to smoother videos and better low-light shots.
On the software side, two features really caught my attention; Photo Styles and Cinema Mode. First of all, I must say that when opening the iPhone 13 camera, everything is really very intuitive. In the upper corner, you can quickly set the style of the photo, for warmer or vivid tones, or even higher contrast.
Cinema Mode, on the other hand, proved to be less complex than I expected – let’s face it, Apple’s presentation was really pompous in this regard. Simply put, this function allows you to change the focus of objects that appear in the foreground of a video. This can be done manually or automatically, and if, in the end, you want to change the result, you can do so using the iPhone’s editing app or an Apple software like Final Cut.
Cinema Mode is basically the bokeh effect for videos, and Apple has done a good job here!
iPhone 13’s front-facing camera is basically the same as the iPhone 12’s, and it does a good job. You also get the Photo Style feature which works great for FaceTime – which now offers the option for video calls with people who don’t own Apple devices.
iPhone 13: Image gallery
Main camera (Photo Style – warm) Outdoor Main Camera Main camera (Portrait mode) Main camera (Contrast) Main camera Ultra wide-angle camera Front camera – Portrait mode Front Camera – Photo
Overall, the camera setup on the iPhone 13 is very good, although we don’t have the versatility found in the Pro line. The latter, as you might be aware, gets a telephoto camera in addition to other advanced features. The photos are sharp, with excellent contrast, and the post-processing is very well done by the software.
Finally, it’s worth noting that the camera on the iPhone 12 Pro Max was voted the best on a smartphone in our recent blind test. And that speaks volumes about the quality of the iPhone 13’s lens and sensor array, even if it doesn’t have the same versatility as Apple’s most advanced phone of 2020.
Battery is 15% larger
The battery of the iPhone 13 is bigger. To be precise, it is 15.1% bigger compared to the predecessor model. Apple claims that this difference is big enough for the iPhone 13 to last 2.5 hours more compared to its predecessor. Of course, this has had an impact on the design of the device, which is now thicker and a little heavier. However, most people will appreciate the gain in battery life over the addition of a few grams of weight.

The iPhone 13 is a little thicker and a little heavier, but the battery is bigger / © NextPit
I received the device with the battery at 60%, and after 4 hours of screen on time, the device still offered a 23% charge. Charging time, on the other hand, is nothing surprising. To get from 23% to 98% charging, it took about 1:30min.
Since this is still a preliminary review of the iPhone 13, I’ll stick to saying that the 37% charge consumption for 4 hours of screen time is really good at first glance. However, you have to consider that the display is a standard 60Hz panel, and the fact that we have an OLED display with deep blacks is a big plus.
First impressions: Apple has refined the series in 2021
The iPhone 13 is a classic upgrade and an incremental one over the iPhone 12, which – as you know – was a significant update over the iPhone 11. But get this: This is a faster smartphone, with better battery life and a real upgrade in terms of the camera. My first impressions couldn’t be more positive.
Of course, it would have been better to see the same screen refresh rate as the iPhone 13 Pro on the “more basic” line or the removal of the notch altogether. However, it looks like that’s reserved for the next generation of the iPhone. I am thankful we do not have to contend with the 64GB variant anymore.
The pricing of the iPhone 13 starts at $799 for the base model and goes up to $1099 for the 512GB top variant.

Paint.net is a powerful and practical tool that Windows users can rely on instead of Photoshop. It is a capable and functional tool that concentrates less on artistic creation and more on photo editing.

Windows users will love the tools that CorelDRAW has to offer. This Photoshop alternative boasts an interactive tool that will help you to straighten your image or adjust the perspective. Though, one of its most impressive features is its stylus control that reacts to a different pressure.
If you are working with Windows 10, this is the perfect fit. Windows users will also be happy to know that it supports 4K displays and multi-monitor viewing.

Apple iPhone 12 mini Review
The iPhone 12 mini (starting at $699) is the smallest and most affordable phone in Apple's late 2020 iPhone quartet. It's sure to appeal most to owners of older iPhones (particularly the iPhone 5 through 8), as well as anyone fed up with a handset that doesn't fit into their pocket. The mini is also the best value in the iPhone 12 family, packing premium power and the latest features (including 5G and a very capable Night photo mode) into a smaller build for less money than its siblings. It's our top-pick iPhone this year and easily earns our Editors' Choice award.
Where the mini Fits in the iPhone 12 Lineup
Apple has a rich crop of phones this year. In addition to the iPhone 12 mini, there's the iPhone SE ($399), the iPhone 12 ($799), the iPhone 12 Pro ($999), and the iPhone 12 Pro Max ($1,099). Last year's iPhone 11 is also still available for $599.
If that long list makes your head spin, turn to our iPhone 12 series review for a fully detailed analysis of all the iPhone 12 phones and guidance on how to choose the right one for you.
The mini looks and feels like an iPhone 12, just smaller. Like the iPhone 12, it comes in glossy black, blue, green, red, or white, with a new "ceramic shield" glass front that Apple claims is less prone to smashing than previous iPhone fronts. The backs of our iPhone 12 review units haven't yet shown scratches when being knocked around in my pocket, which is a good sign. You're probably less likely to drop a small phone, but if you do, it's IP68 rated and should survive a voyage to the bottom of the bathtub.
At 5.18 by 2.53 by 0.29 inches (HWD) and 4.76 ounces, the mini is the smallest, lightest premium phone I've seen in a while. That 2.53-inch width measurement is the key, since width affects how easily you can reach across a phone. In my experience, when you get over 2.7 inches, you start to have to stretch, and many people's comfort limit is just about at 2.8 inches. The main iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro are 2.83 inches wide; the Pro Max is over 3 inches wide.
The mini's luxury experience starts with the screen. The highly saturated OLED display makes the iPhone SE's LCD look washed out. At 5.4 inches and 2,340 by 1,080 pixels, it's even denser than the iPhone 12's display, with 476 pixels per inch. Yet it's the same brightness, averaging 625 nits, brighter than previous-generation iPhone screens.
Removing the big top and bottom bezels gives the phone significantly more screen real estate than the iPhone SE, 6, 7, and 8. With a Microsoft Word document open in portrait mode, with very small type, I saw nine more lines of text on the mini than on the iPhone SE. On NYTimes.com, which has a more readable text size and freer line spacing, I got three more lines of text. Of course, bigger phones with larger screens will give you more, but it's impressive that the mini delivers more information than the SE despite being smaller.
Little But Fierce
All of the iPhone 12 series phones are powered by an Apple A14 processor running at 3GHz. Like the iPhone 12, the mini has 4GB of RAM and comes in 64GB ($699), 128GB ($749), and 256GB ($849) storage sizes. Those prices are for carrier models; the unlocked model costs $30 more.
Our benchmark results were the same as the iPhone 12, as you'd expect. Its Geekbench scores of 1,602 single-core, 4,029 multi-core, Basemark Web score of 593, and GFXBench graphics benchmark scores were all very similar to both the iPhone 12 and the 12 Pro. They're also all better than the iPhone SE, to the tune of 20% higher on Geekbench Multicore and 10% on the Web browsing benchmark. It's pleasantly surprising to me that the mini even benchmarks the same as the iPhone 12 Pro Max, which costs $400 more and feels twice as large.
Like the other 2020 iPhones, the mini runs Apple's iOS 14. For more details on what's new in iOS, see our iOS 14 review.
Top-Notch Night Vision
No expense was spared for the cameras on the iPhone 12 mini; they're the same as in the iPhone 12. On the back, there are 12-megapixel regular and ultrawide cameras. On the front, there's a 12-megapixel selfie camera. Both the front and back cameras feature Apple's excellent Night mode, and they can record 4K video at up to 60fps. For a comparison of the iPhone 12 cameras with other leading flagships, see our main iPhone 12 review.
I took care to compare the mini directly with the iPhone SE. The biggest difference is Night mode. The SE doesn't have it, and Night mode makes a huge difference in terms of the quality of low-light pictures. That alone is a reason to upgrade to the mini. The SE also lacks the wide-angle camera; has slightly less light gathering in the main camera; and has a 7-megapixel, not 12-megapixel, selfie camera.
The mini also has better HDR than the SE. That means you get richer colors in shots with bright backgrounds and darker foregrounds, for instance. You can see that in the shot below: The sky is a bit overexposed on the SE photo, but it's rich and blue on photos from both the 12 and the mini.
If you want a better iPhone camera, you have to step up to the 12 Pro, which starts at $300 more than the mini. With the Pro, you get a 2x zoom lens and LiDAR, which improves focusing and gives you a gorgeous Night bokeh mode. I found that when I tried to focus on very close-up berries and branches with the iPhone 12 mini or the regular iPhone 12, the phones had trouble figuring out what the foreground object was, but the LiDAR on the iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max really locked that in.
In test shots of complex, non-human objects, the iPhone 12 Pro performed better than either the iPhone 12 mini or the iPhone 12. On a portrait-mode shot of an apple, the mini and the 12 had some trouble keeping the whole fruit in focus while also blurring the background; the 12 Pro handled it well. When I photographed a cup, the bokeh blur went a bit wonky around the handle with the mini and the 12, but the Pro's LiDAR focusing clearly helped it judge focus there. I didn't see any difference between the models in my portrait-mode photos of myself, a human.
Clean and Clear Audio
The iPhone 12 mini has the same 4G and 5G capabilities as the bigger iPhone 12 models. That means much better cellular connections than the iPhone SE, the iPhone 11, or any previous iPhone. It supports all US carriers, including Verizon's millimeter-wave 5G network, and is the first line of phones to be certified for the "C-Band" networks that will be coming in late 2021.
Voice call quality is very good. It's worth noting that the dual (top and bottom) stereo speakers on this phone are much louder, clearer, and richer than the single speaker on the bottom of the iPhone SE and older iPhones. Of course they don't have bass, but they're surprisingly non-tinny considering the size of the phone, with treble that's rich, not squeaky.
I tested the mini against the iPhone 12 and SE on the Bell and Rogers networks in Canada. Speeds and reception were very similar between the Mini and the iPhone 12. On Bell's 5G network, the mini averaged 366Mbps down while the iPhone 12 averaged 393Mbps; on Bell's 4G network, the mini averaged 296Mbps down while the 12 averaged 261Mbps. Given the relatively small number of samples I took, both of those differences are within the margin of error.
But wow, the mini and the 12 deliver much better performance than the SE does. The SE doesn't have 5G, so I compared 4G results with 4G results. On Bell's 4G network, the mini got 296Mbps down where the SE got 147Mbps. On Rogers' 4G network, the mini got 111Mbps down where the SE got 77.8Mbps. That is a significant, real performance improvement, probably down to the mini's improved carrier aggregation and 4x4 MIMO antennas. I'd expect to see the same gains over the iPhone 11 or XR as well (they don't have 4x4 MIMO antennas), though the iPhone 11 Pro should perform closer to the mini and 12 (it does have 4x4 MIMO).
For those wondering whether these are Canada-specific results, never fear; the iPhone 12 and 12 Pro were tested in the US and showed good results, so I'd expect the same from the mini.
Dual-band Wi-Fi performance is similar to the iPhone SE's. Range on 5GHz Wi-Fi was a few feet short of the iPhone 12, meaning the 12 could get past one more wall where the mini and SE couldn't.
Battery: Not Bad for the Size
Battery life is the biggest concern with the iPhone 12 mini. It's a smaller phone, and it has a smaller battery than the bigger phones do. Comparing it to the iPhone 12, Apple says it gets 10 rather than 11 hours of streaming, and 50 rather than 65 hours of audio playback on a charge.
Our video streaming test didn't reveal much here: I got 10 hours, 37 minutes of streaming video over Wi-Fi, similar to the iPhone 12. But when left alone all night, the mini's battery dropped 9% while the iPhone 12's battery dropped 6%; I saw a similar difference on the second night. If you often forget to charge your phone, you might find that difference frustrating.
The mini's stats look better when it's compared with other small iPhones. Apple says the mini has better battery life than the iPhone 6, 7, 8, or SE. Overnight, the SE dropped 14% and the mini dropped 12%. Running some speed tests for two hours killed 13% of the mini's battery, but 18% of the SE's. So yes, the mini does have more battery capacity than the 2020 iPhone SE.
The speed test suggests that the iPhone 12 mini's battery can handle 7 to 8 hours of heavy use; my video rundown test and Apple's estimate put its use time around 10 hours on a charge. So the mini will last you a day if you aren't looking at it the whole time.
There's no charger in the box, but there are lots of options for charging your iPhone. The mini works with up to 20-watt wired charging and with Apple's own MagSafe wireless charger. I also have a Qi wireless charging stand, and the Mini worked on it once it had been propped up with a folded piece of paper—unassisted, the phone is just a little too short to properly link up with the coil on the stand. It'll work better on flat pad-style chargers.
Mini Price, Mini Size, Maxi Power
I really like the iPhone 12 mini. Now, I am biased. For years, I've wanted phones to be much more manageable in one hand. When there isn't a pandemic happening, I spend a lot of time out and about, holding on to a subway pole or a shopping bag or a child's hand. I gave into the large phone trend a while ago, but I definitely felt like I was giving up a bit of facility in the world in exchange for the big screen.
This year, we've spent a lot of time sucked into our phones. But just for today, I'm going to dream of the future when we'll go outside to shop and hold hands again. The iPhone 12 mini isn't the phone for the life I've had in 2020, but it's the phone for the life I want.
The mini has the best price-to-power ratio of any iPhone right now, with a beautiful screen, a lovely design, a terrific camera, and 5G for $100 less than the iPhone 12. It will serve you well for up to four years; it's a good investment. If I have to choose one iPhone right now, this one is it.
I won't fault you for choosing a different one, though. Bigger screens may appeal to you more than they do to me. Larger phones have bigger batteries; that's just physics. The Pro models also have better features for serious photographers, such as their LiDAR focusing system, their 2x or 2.5x zoom lenses, and improved Dolby Vision color video capture.
Should you upgrade from an earlier iPhone? If you want 5G (especially on T-Mobile, Bell, or Telus, where it makes a real difference) or photo Night mode (which makes a big difference for everyone), then yes! Many potential iPhone 12 mini buyers are likely currently using iPhone 6, 7, or first-gen SE models, which probably feel sluggish at this point. The mini will zip right along. All of this makes the 12 mini our Editors' Choice winner for iPhones, and one of the best phones of the year.

game recommendations! (sorry for the long post)
i was thinking, maybe people are looking for games to get for the holiday season. here are my recommendations! i can only vouch for the games with western releases though. also im poor so its just 3ds games
pripara! its an arcade game but theres 3 (i think?) 3ds games! unfortunately theyre japan-only so if you have a japanese or hacked 3ds id Really reccomend it! its made by syn sophia (who make girls mode) and is an idol rhythm game. you dress your character (who you can design) and play lives. it doesnt look too difficult, its just a feelgood game. it also has an amazing anime. seriously if you have a good computer that can run citra or are fine with cfw and can understand some japanese you Need to try pripara
aikatsu! its… basically the same as pripara. the rhythm game seems harder though. its an arcade game with 3ds games. and its japan only. id suggest not playing my no. 1 stage if youre not a fan of the anime because you cant make your own character (but it has basically every song in the series as dlc)
etrian odyssey v! you can uhhh kinda make your own characters (really you just recolour existing portraits but its cool) and its a dungeoncrawler rpg. its also cartography simulator 17. basically you walk around a tree and draw a map. all the 3ds eo games (theres 4 not including persona q which has no demo) have demos on the eshop so please try one!! eoiv and a remake of eoi are both €10 on the eshop i think (but have even less character customisation). but warning its quite hard. its made by atlus who are known for tough rpgs
pokemon ultra sun/moon! okay i havent finished ultra sun yet but still. i Loved moon it was amazing!!! i started pokemon with the first 3ds games so even as a newbie i enjoyed myself a whole lot. but Please if you wanna buy sun/moon… dont. buy ultra sun/moon, theyre not sequels theyre alternate universe stories. really theyre just improved versions of the same game. also research the version differences (i chose sun for blacephalon)
ever oasis! this game is just soooo adorable. its sooooooo cute. if you like zelda oot/mm, this actually controls kind of similarly because the creators made the 3ds 3d zelda remakes. theres a demo. its an rpg with simple combat where you have to build an oasis for these cute desert folk
fantasy life is quote similar to ever oasis, but the world in fantasy life is much better imo. it has easy controls but this game is Long. theres a dlc expansion which i suggest buying bc it makes the game way longer and more replayable. its made by level 5 (who made professor layton, inazuma 11, yokai watch) so the arts obviously super charming
extra: zero escape. the final game is 18+ so obviously wont appeal to many girls mode fans… but its so good. its a puzzle game so just… try 999. please. its a ds game (with an ios port if youre fine with no puzzles) so just emulate it. i implore you: do Not play the "remaster" of 999! the graphics are terrible, it adds voice acting but it seriously has godawful sprites. as for the sequels, virtues last reward is on 3ds both physically and digitally, but it also has a remaster on steam/ps4/vita (which includes the terrible 999 remaster). honestly the 3ds version is pretty perfect so no need to get the new edition. finally zero time dilemma is 18+ and is digital only. its… not the best game. the puzzles are great and i personally loved the grapgics but the storys… mehhhh. this game spoils vlr which spoils 999 so please play in order!!

iPhone SE review: Apple's $399 iPhone lives up to the hype
New Post has been published on https://appradab.com/iphone-se-review-apples-399-iphone-lives-up-to-the-hype-3/
iPhone SE review: Apple's $399 iPhone lives up to the hype

There are a lot of ways to think about Apple’s new $399 iPhone SE. One is that it’s a more affordable option than the iPhone 11 ($699 at Amazon), with surprisingly similar camera specs, which it is. Or that it’s the 2020 sequel to the original SE from 2016, which it also is. Or, at 4.7 inches, that it’s the smallest and cheapest iPhone you can currently buy (though it’s not that small). Or — and this is my favorite way to think about it — that it’s an iPhone 8 with the brains and power of an iPhone 11. In fact, the new iPhone SE is all these things and that’s why I’m enamored with it.
Like
Affordable price
Long battery life so far
Great rear camera
iPhone 11 Pro-level performance
Don’t Like
Old iPhone design
Selfie camera is mediocre
The new iPhone SE has the classic design that defined the iPhone for its first 10 years. The design, the body and the camera lenses are all the same as 2017’s iPhone 8. But Apple performed a clever brain transplant, replacing the nearly 3-year-old processor with the A13 Bionic processor used in the iPhone 11, 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max. This goes well beyond a simple spec bump by majorly improving things like the cameras and battery life. The new processor not only runs faster, but it will likely future-proof the phone through years of iOS updates.
Read more: iPhone SE 2020 is proof that Apple won’t actually bring back the tiny phone
But a $399 (£419, AU$749) iPhone comes with compromises, which Apple chose wisely. The SE has only a single rear camera, it doesn’t have Face ID and it lacks camera features like Night Mode, Slofies and Deep Fusion processing. The selfie camera is OK but not as amazing as the one found on the iPhone 11, 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max.
When you look at the complete picture, the iPhone SE represents the most value for your dollar of any phone Apple sells. It has an attractive price, fantastic battery life, great rear camera, A13 processor, water resistance and support for wireless charging. The iPhone SE’s iPhone 8 design
Physically, the SE is an iPhone 8. The front and back are made of glass, the chassis and sides are aluminum. The only physical difference between the iPhone SE and iPhone 8 is that the Apple logo is now centered on the back to match current-generation iPhones.
The new phone has Apple’s old-school forehead and chin bezel above and below the screen. This makes the SE look, well, old. This is the one of the few things that I’m not too thrilled about. It’s not ugly, it’s just dated. And that might appeal to some people, but not me.

Welcome back, large bezels.
John Kim/CNET
Having used Face ID for the past couple years, it’s a strange and familiar feeling to set up and use Touch ID. It’s like going from an automatic transmission back to a stick shift. But in the right car, stick shift can be a blast.
I forgot how much I missed the home button and how it makes interactions and navigation less fussy than swipes and holds. I tap and hold to pay for purchases instead of angling my phone to get Face ID verification. A speedy double-tap shows recent apps. Though Face ID has its own benefits, the home button is still as satisfying to use as it was back in the day.
For tiny phone lovers, the iPhone SE’s 4.7-inch LCD display isn’t as small as the original SE’s 4-inch screen. But it’s still smaller than most phones out right now and is enough to be portable and comfortable for most people.
The screen on the SE is similar to the one on the iPhone 11, especially in terms of quality and resolution. Text looks sharp, colors are accurate and it’s bright in sunny conditions.

The iPhone SE is rated IP67 for water and dust resistance.
Patrick Holland/CNET
The iPhone SE is rated IP67, meaning it can withstand being submerged for 30 minutes at a depth of 1 meter (about 3 feet). I wasn’t able to test this claim, though I did submerge it in a liter of water for 30 minutes and everything worked fine. This level of water and dust resistance isn’t something you normally find on phones under $400, so it’s particularly noteworthy that the iPhone SE has it.
The SE comes in three colors: black, white and red. The iPhone 8 had its own red version too, but it had white bezels and damn if the iPhone SE doesn’t look more striking in red with black bezels.
The iPhone SE’s battery life is longer than the iPhone 8
Apple’s website says that the iPhone SE’s battery lasts about the same as the iPhone 8, but my testing showed it lasted much longer. I played a looped video on Airplane mode at 50% brightness and the iPhone SE lasted 15 hours, 45 minutes. That’s hours longer than what the iPhone 8 and iPhone SE lasted in the same test when they were new. Anecdotally, it made it through a day and a half without a problem, and a couple times it went two days straight without a charge.

In our early battery tests, the iPhone SE easily outlasts the iPhone 8 and original 2016 iPhone SE.
Patrick Holland/CNET
I should note that I have more battery tests to run (including streaming video tests), so check back when I’ll update the results.
The iPhone SE has wireless charging, which is another feature not found on most budget phones. There is also support for fast-charging, which replenishes the battery to 50% in 30 minutes. But the iPhone SE doesn’t come with the necessary 18-watt charger and instead includes the slower 5-watt one. Again, this is likely to keep the cost of the device low.
iPhone SE has A13 Bionic processor performance
The longevity of Apple’s iOS support for “older devices” is a quiet but significant appeal of owning an iPhone. The iPhone 8 and its A11 processor are now two-and-a-half years old and will likely stop receiving iOS software updates a couple years before the iPhone SE and its newer A13 Bionic processor.
In performance tests, the iPhone SE was consistently better than the iPhone 8 and (no surprise) the original iPhone SE. It scored similar results to what we got on the iPhone 11, 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max.
In real life that meant app launches were peppy, playing games like Sky: Children of Light and Doomsday Vault were a breeze. Editing photos was easy and I could even use graphics-heavy AR apps such as Wonderscope, which transformed my bedroom into a training ground for ghosts.

iPhone SE cameras have Portrait Mode, Smart HDR
The rear camera on the SE has the same specs as the iPhone 8, but when combined with the A13 chip and iOS 13 it transforms the camera into something that can compete with the best phone cameras, and even go toe-to-toe with the main rear camera on the iPhone 11. It has a slew of features, including Smart HDR for photos, Quick Take filming and Portrait Mode — these are impressive features and a first for a $399 iPhone.

The iPhone SE has a single rear camera that has SmartHDR and Portrait Mode for photos.
John Kim/CNET
The rear camera on the SE has a 28mm f1.8 lens while the iPhone 11 has two rear cameras: a main wide-angle camera with a 26-mm f1.8 lens and an ultrawide-angle camera with a 13mm f/2.4 lens. I do enjoy the ultrawide-angle on the iPhone 11 but I didn’t miss it during my time with the iPhone SE.
When I compare photos taken with each phone, it’s hard to distinguish between them unless you bring them onto a larger screen and even then the differences are subtle.
In good light, photos from each are similar in terms of image quality. Look at the pictures below of a tree I took in my backyard. Can you tell the difference? You see my point. The most obvious difference is that the iPhone SE photo is framed tighter than the iPhone 11.
Here are a few other photos from the iPhone SE.

The iPhone SE is great at capturing accurate colors.

Smart HDR is impressive in keeping the sky from blowing out and the shadows relatively free of image noise.
Patrick Holland/CNET

In this photo of wood slats, look at the amount of detail and texture the iPhone SE captured.
Patrick Holland/CNET

A nice snap of my breakfast taken under medium lighting.
Patrick Holland/CNET
Both phones have portrait mode and produce excellent results. The 11 can capture portrait mode photos of both people and pets. The iPhone SE, like the iPhone XR ($599 at Apple), can only do people. It’s not until you look very closely at the photos below that you can see that the iPhone 11’s portrait mode captures just a bit more detail and less noise.
In the picture below of my shoulder, you’ll notice the quality of the falloff from in-focus to out-of-focus areas looks more natural on the iPhone 11 than on the iPhone SE.
Below are photos of my bike trainer taken indoors in medium lighting. The most obvious difference here is the framing is tighter on the iPhone SE. But the iPhone 11 captured more detail, which you can see on the wall outlet. And if you look at the bottom right side of the trainer, you’ll notice the iPhone SE suffers from noise in the shadows. That said, there isn’t a huge difference between the photos. For indoor and medium light photos, the 11 has a thin edge.
As for video, both phones are similar. The iPhone SE and 11 can shoot 4K 60fps video, but only the 11 takes advantage of the extended dynamic range at that resolution and frame rate. The SE has extended dynamic range for video, but only up to 4K 30fps. Take a look at my iPhone SE review video to see samples of videos captured with the iPhone SE.
The one place where there’s a big difference between the two phones are the selfie cameras. The iPhone 11 has a wider front-facing camera, and it’s capable of shooting 4K and slow-mo videos. The iPhone SE only shoots 1080p video and no Slofies. Both have Portrait mode for selfies, but photos from the iPhone 11 show more detail in my skin.

Exciting New Tools for Designers, July 2020
Some of the changes we are seeing with where we work are starting to pop up in the type of new tools made for designers and developers. More tools with remote collaboration as a key feature are increasing in popularity. (You’ll find a few of those here.)
Here’s what new for designers this month.
Webdesign Toolbox
Webdesign Toolbox is a collection of tools, apps, and resources all in one location for designers and developers. The best part of this resource is that it is human-curated, so every tool is quality checked and makes the list because it has been tested and researched. Search the collection by design, dev, stock, typography, UX, or workflow tools (and more) and use them to help create more efficiently. The collection is constantly growing, too.

CodeStream
CodeStream might be the new-world workflow tool for web designers and developers. It is made for remote teams to review code right inside your IDE without breaking from development flow. You can post and review changes and comments are all independent of the code itself, even though they link to it.

Litur
Litur is a color management app for iOS. Use it to find and collect color swatches, create custom palettes, and even check color combinations against accessibility standards. The app can even generate color codes for you from swatches you find from a photo or image upload or create. The app works on mobile and desktop Mac devices and is a paid app.

Editor X
Editor X, which is still in beta, is a website building tool that combines advanced design and prototyping capabilities with secure web hosting and integrated business solutions. Go from an idea straight to production in a highly intuitive design workspace. The best feature might be exact design precision tools.

The 5 Best Smartphones of 2020

Best Overall (Android): Samsung Galaxy S10
If Apple’s iOS isn’t your cup of tea, Samsung still leads the pack for the foremost popular and best smartphones within the Android world. The company's latest flagship, the Galaxy S10, may be a well-rounded device that checks all the proper boxes.
First, Samsung has packed in Qualcomm’s ultra-fast eight-core Snapdragon 855 processor, plus 8GB of RAM and up to 512GB of internal storage. You not only get wireless charging but Samsung’s new "PowerShare" feature also, delivering wireless power to other Qi-compatible devices. The gorgeous 6.1-inch AMOLED screen boasts a resolution of 3040 x 1440, with a pixel density of 550 PPI—the highest in Samsung’s Galaxy's lineup—and a replacement “hole-punch” design accommodating an edge-to-edge display.
A triple-lens camera system, with the quality lenses offering a 12-megapixel (MP) sensor and an f/1.5 aperture, plus a 3rd 16MP ultra-wide-angle lens, can capture a powerful 123-degree field of view. The S10 also boasts Samsung’s first in-display acoustic fingerprint sensor, meaning you'll unlock your phone just by placing your finger on the front screen. Although our tester said this feature was "spotty," he felt the Galaxy S10 was "a beautiful and brilliant smartphone."
Runner-Up, Best Overall (Android): Google Pixel 3
When the Google Pixel 3 arrived last year, it made waves with its camera. While the camera specs might not seem that spectacular on the surface (it only features a single at 12.2 MP rear camera with an f/1.8 aperture), the simplest Google Pixel 3 features are baked into the software, joining Apple’s iPhone XR because the only other smartphone capable of taking seriously high-quality photos with just one lens.
Also, because the smartphone is formed by Google, it fits most naturally into the Android ecosystem—so if you’re a significant Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Drive, or Google Assistant user, this is often the smartphone for you. Plus, additionally to wireless charging, the Pixel 3 switches to a Google Assistant-friendly UI whenever you set it on the charger. Our tester loved this phone: "This is that the best Android phone you'll stock terms of access to cutting-edge features," he said. "The Pixel 3 provides an unfiltered Android experience—with the promise of years of timely updates—that you only won’t find anywhere else."
Best Overall (Apple): iPhone 11 Pro
The iPhone is one among the foremost popular cell phones and a few might argue the simplest smartphone. The new iPhone 11 Pro gains a triple-lens camera system, and while that’s not a replacement idea, Apple has combined the three cameras — a 26mm wide-angle f/1.8, a 13mm ultra-wide-angle f/2.4, and a telephoto f/2.0, all of which are 12 megapixel shooters — with its A13 Bionic chip’s “Neural Engine” to supply computational photography features that make these cameras much greater than the sum of their parts.
Apple’s new Night Mode allows you to take great and natural-looking pictures in very low light. Deep Fusion, on the opposite hand, blends multiple photos together, pixel-by-pixel, choosing the simplest parts of every. On top of that, you now get 4K/60fps video with extended dynamic range and a smooth optical zoom that seamlessly transitions between all three lenses without missing a beat. The front-facing TrueDepth camera can now take 12-megapixel selfies also, with 4K/60fps and slow-motion video capture available to power users.
Apple has also seriously upped its OLED game, with the new "Super Retina XDR" display boasting a 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio, 1200 nits of brightness, Dolby Vision, and HDR10 video. Spatial audio and Dolby Atmos support also make this one among the simplest pocket movie players you'll get. Moreover, Apple has managed to deliver four hours of additional battery life over last year’s iPhone XS, and for the primary time ever, an 18-watt USB-PD fast charging adapter is included within the box.
Best Splurge: iPhone 11 Pro Max
The iPhone 11 Pro Max is that the ultimate flagship of Apple’s current lineup, bringing all of the good features of Apple’s iPhone 11 Pro to the large screen. While both of Apple’s Pro models have an equivalent specs under the hood, it’s hard to argue that bigger is best, especially when it involves the gorgeous new "Super Retina XDR" display that Apple has put during this year, also because the sleek chrome steel and glass design.
At 6.5 inches, Apple’s new display provides a shocking 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio, up to 1200 nits of brightness when viewing HDR content, and a 2688 x 1242-pixel resolution at a triple-density of 458 pixels-per-inch. There’s also Apple’s True Tone display with a P3 wide color gamut, which suggests you’re getting unsurpassed color accuracy for your photos and videos no matter the encompassing lighting conditions.
The new triple-lens camera system, which adds 0.5x ultra-wide-angle and 2X telephoto lenses to hitch the quality f1.8 26mm shooter, is protected by Apple’s new A13 Bionic, the foremost powerful CPU ever put during a smartphone, with a Neural Engine to power some pretty cool advanced photography features sort of a new Night Mode which will take impressive natural-looking photos in extremely low-light conditions. This year’s "Max" model also gets a fantastic five hours more battery life than its predecessor, and Apple has, for the primary time, packed an 18-watt fast charger right into the box.
Best Budget: Moto G7
Recently, Motorola—one of the oldest names in cell phones—has been trying to carve out a replacement niche for itself by creating the simplest Android phones for the typical user at a reasonable price. Its latest offering is that the Moto G7, which offers a unprecedented range of features for its price. Physically, it's a premium feel: an all-glass back and an edge-to-edge 6.2-inch display on the front, along side only a small teardrop notch for the front camera. A Snapdragon 632 eight-core CPU and 4GB RAM brings solid performance, and while it’s not getting to win any speed tests against Samsung or Apple, it’s quite fast enough to suit most of your needs.
On the rear are a fingerprint sensor and dual, 12MP/5MP cameras with 4K video, Portrait Mode, HDR photos, and slow-motion video. Although it doesn’t have advanced photo features, it nails all of the fundamentals, then some. Unfortunately, it doesn't have wireless charging capabilities—you’ll need to resort to Moto’s included "Turbopower" charger, which gets you copy to around 50 percent in half-hour. It also boasts a surprisingly good battery life. While it lacks a politician IP rating for water resistance, Motorola has coated it with "P2i nano-coating." Splashes and spills are going to be fine, but not much else.

http://digitaltechnologynews.com/ OnePlus 5T vs Apple iPhone 8 Smartphones OnePlus 5T The new OnePlus 5T smartphone has an immersive 6"18:9 AMOLED display and a new dual camera system on the back that will help it take better pictures in low light. It can also take Portrait Mode photos with a blurred background. The fingerprint scanner is on the back and the phone also supports Face Unlock. Good old features like the 3.5mm headphone jack and Dash Charger, the company's quick charging solution, are still present on the 5T as well. One Plus 5T unboxing. One Plus 5T display The new display is the big star of the show with the OnePlus 5T. It's a 6.01" OLED screen that takes up 80.5% of the phone's front. Bezels are stripped to a bare minimum on the top and bottom, and are almost invisible on the sides. It is a taller screen as well, with a new 18:9 aspect ratio and a 1080 x 2160 pixel resolution. One Plus 5T hands on. One Plus 5T Camera The other big change in the OnePlus 5T comes in the camera. The OnePlus 5 was the first from the company to have a dual camera system on its back, with a wide-angle main lens and a "telephoto" secondary lens. This setup changes in the OnePlus 5T, which has the same wide-angle main camera, but the secondary camera is actually one with the same 27mm field of view, but a higher 20MP resolution and the capability to combine 4 pixels into one in order to reduce noise in low-light pictures. One Plus 5T test speed. Both these new cameras have a wide, f/1.7 aperture. OnePlus says that the phone will detect low-light situations and will switch to the secondary camera when it gets dark. And Portrait Mode - the one where the background of a picture is blurred, while the subject remains in sharp focus - will still be available on the OnePlus 5T, using clever algorithms and software to do its trick. One Plus 5T Face Unlock The build of Oxygen OS that the OnePlus 5T ships with will have a new Face Unlock feature. Yeah, it does pretty much what it sounds like — the phone will use the selfie camera to scan your face and unlock. It's worth noting that there are no IR dot projectors or retinal scanners attached, so the feature is probably not as secure as it is on the Samsung flagships or the Apple iPhone X. Also, since it's entirely software-based, we might see it arrive on the OnePlus 5 via an update. One Plus 5T speed. One Plus 5T release date In the United States, the OnePlus 5T release date is set for Tuesday, November 21st, and the phone will also lauch in most of Europe, Canada, as well as in China, Hong Kong and India. One Plus 5T price The OnePlus 5T price has gone ever so slightly in the United States: the base 64GB model costs $500 (the OnePlus 5 price was set at $480). In Europe and the rest of the world, the price remains at €500 for the same 64 gig version of the phone. One Plus 5T portrait mode The background-blurring mode is making a return and, for what we can tell, will use the main camera again, just like before. One Plus 5T battery With the release of the OnePlus 5T, the company states that software improvements have been made to further reduce noise and improve imagery of the Portrait Mode. Since these are entirely software-based, we might see them arrive via an update to the OnePlus 5? We'll see. Apple iPhone 8 All-new iphone 8 on the inside and out, the handset is expected to be made of glass on the front and back, while a stainless steel frame around the sides keeps it all together. We're not exactly sure if the overall size of the iPhone is going to change, but it is believed that the screen will cover a greater portion of the phone's front. And if that does not sound futuristic enough, it is speculated that the phone will ditch the home button and fingerprint sensor, integrating these into the screen itself. At the back, a single camera is expected to be found, and the next-generation A11 chip would provide the processing power required to drive iOS.
