A Beginner's Guide to Using a Portable BBQ
Summer is here, which means it is time to fire up the grill and enjoy some delicious, barbecued food. Whether you’re cooking for yourself, a partner, or a massive group of friends and family, now is the perfect time to host a BBQ cookout. Now, some of you may be lucky enough to have a built-in barbecue in your garden, but what about those who don’t? The answer is portable BBQs! Not only can a portable BBQ be used within your garden, but you can take it wherever you wish, whether you’re cooking at a friend's house or are taking part in a food event. In this blog post, I am going to cover everything you need to know about portable barbecues, including their benefits, types, features, and how to choose the perfect one for your needs!
Tumblr media
I have been on the hunt for a high-quality portable BBQ for a while now, so I understand the challenge that it is! There are hundreds, even thousands of grill brands out there and it can be hard to know which one is best, but luckily for you, I am here to help. Cinders Barbecues is a barbecue equipment manufacturer in the UK, and they are known for their trustworthy and reliable grills. You can buy their products from a range of distributors, but if you would like to see what they have on offer, have a browse on their website here. If you are looking for a high-quality grill, Cinders is a company you will want to check out.
Benefits of a Portable Grill
Portable grills are a great choice for people who love to BBQ, especially for those who only host a BBQ occasionally or who move around a lot! There are a number of benefits that portable barbecues offer:
Portability – the most obvious benefit of portable BBQs is that they are mobile. They are generally lightweight and compact, making them easy to whip out wherever you go.
Convenience – with a portable grill, you can set up a BBQ anywhere at any time, whether you’re camping, going to a catering event, or even enjoying a day at the park.
Versatility – depending on how you want to use the grill, portable BBQs are available in a variety of sizes and styles, so you can find one that matches perfectly with your needs.
Cost-effective – due to their low maintenance and ease of set-up, portable grills are less expensive than built-in or stationary BBQs, making them a great option for those on a budget. Also, if you tend to move house often, there is no point wasting money on building a BBQ station within your garden – simply purchase a portable one!
Types of Portable BBQs
There are 3 main types of portable BBQs: charcoal, gas, and electric. Each type has its advantages and disadvantages, so it is important to know and choose the one that is right for you.
Charcoal BBQ
Charcoal BBQs are the most traditional type of BBQ, like if you were to picture a BBQ, this is one that you will likely envision (well I do anyway). These BBQs use charcoal as a type of fuel and generally require more time and effort than other types of BBQs to set up and use. Having said that, due to the charcoal and raw flames, they offer a unique flavour that is hard to replicate with other types of portable grills.
Tumblr media
Gas BBQ
Gas BBQs use propane or natural gas to produce heat. They are one of the most convenient types of portable grills, with an incredibly quick set-up. Additionally, unlike charcoal which needs monitoring, gas BBQs provide consistent heat and temperature control.
Tumblr media
Electric BBQ
Electric BBQs are one of the most modern types of grills, using electricity as their power source. Especially for apartments or rental places, these are an ideal choice when gas and charcoal grilling is not allowed.
Tumblr media
Features to Look for in a Portable BBQ
When choosing a portable BBQ, there are several features to consider:
Size and weight
Portable BBQs come in a variety of sizes and weights, so you should consider how many people you’ll be cooking for and how much space you have in your vehicle for transport.
Cooking surface
The size of the cooking surface is an important factor to consider. If you're cooking for a large group, you'll need a larger cooking surface.
Fuel Efficiency
Some portable BBQs are more fuel-efficient than others. Look for models that use less fuel or have a longer burn time.
Temperature Control
Temperature control is important for achieving the perfect cook, so make sure you know how to handle the grill you choose.
Durability and Quality
A portable BBQ should be durable and made with quality materials to ensure it lasts for many grilling seasons to come. Look for models with sturdy frames, high-quality grates, and durable construction.
How to Choose the Perfect Portable Barbecue
Consider Your Needs
Think about how often you'll be using your portable BBQ, how many people you'll be cooking for, and where you'll be using it. This will help you determine the size, type, and features you need.
Think About Your Budget
Portable barbecues come in a range of prices, from budget-friendly options to high-end models. Set a budget and choose a model that fits within your price range.
Read Reviews
Before purchasing a portable BBQ, read reviews from other customers to learn about their experiences with different models. This can help you make an informed decision and avoid potential issues.
My Top Tips
Choose the Right Fuel
Make sure you're using the right type of fuel for your portable BBQ. Charcoal BBQs require charcoal, gas BBQs require propane or natural gas, and electric BBQs require electricity.
Preheat Your BBQ
Preheat your BBQ for at least 10 minutes before cooking to ensure it reaches the desired temperature.
Clean Your BBQ Regularly
Clean your grill after each use to ensure it lasts for many grilling seasons. Use a wire brush to clean the grates and wipe down the exterior with a damp cloth.
Use the Right Tools
Make sure you're using the right tools when grilling on your portable BBQ. Use long-handled tongs, a spatula, and a meat thermometer for safe and efficient cooking.
Hopefully, with all this information in mind, you can find the perfect portable BBQ for your next grilling adventure!

Points to consider when choosing web hosting
Tumblr media
When you wish to make a site for your business, for a pastime, a blog ... You desire it to in fact be on the internet at all times. As well as the only way that's going to take place is when you pick a good web hosting supplier. If you choose a bad one, well all the best then.
Now when picking a carrier, it's important to recognize what to try to find. However before we consider what's crucial, we'll discuss the disadvantages when picking a poor (and also usually affordable) service provider.
Drawbacks of having negative web hosting:
Loss of profits and also audience:
When individuals locate your website down many of the time, they'll likewise likely believe that your firm is unstable. You'll likely want to construct a target market, but that's not going to occur when the area they want to go to online, isn't up.
Bad result on your position:
Your objective with a site generally is to bring in a whole lot of people. You will want to be placed higher in the search results.
Protection assaults and also violations:
Web sites get assaulted everyday by people that intend to swipe details, fraud or just do damage. It's impossible to have an ideal safe and secure web site, a good and also trusted host will be more difficult to assault and will also have your information backed up. You truly don't want to lose all your data and also the depend on of your site visitors (or consumers).
Now that we've covered a number of drawbacks of a bad host allow's get to the next subject, exactly how to pick a good web hosting provider.
Selecting a good provider:
Prior to you check out any additionally, you need to first understand that there are a lot of various types of hosting. Such as VPS, Dedicated and also Managed web hosting.
So the initial and also essential factor when selecting an excellent company is the customer support. You may have a great host, yet if there's an issue and they aren't reacting after that what are you going to do? Most providers supply 24/7 assistance, yet this doesn't say you'll obtain an instant reaction. Be certain to do your research.
Coming second would certainly be the up-time performance history. As I've discussed before, this is very crucial. While it would be challenging to have a 100% up-time, if the host has one in between 95% and also 99% after that I would discover it good enough to choose them.
Yet after that comes the expense, while a great deal of providers are cheap. They aren't truly that trusted. Considering that you typically obtain what you spend for, it's far better to pick a web hosting service provider that costs a little much more.
The last element I would certainly check out when selecting would certainly be the ability to update. You desire your website to be able to handle it smoothly when you're getting progressively extra traffic. Having a good quantity of ram, disk drive space can do wonders.

There are a lot of differences between self-published authors and those working with a publishing house, but when it comes to book marketing, we’re all in the same boat. At a time when many authors find their marketing stipend barely covers the basics, writers of every stripe need to know how to market their own work effectively. If you have some money to splash around, you have a few options (such as marketing services and book trailers), but if your funds are limited, you need to know about guerrilla marketing.
That’s why, in this two-part article, I’ll be taking a look at exactly that. Here in part 1, we’ll talk about what guerrilla marketing is and how it works, while in part 2, we’ll look at the tips and specific techniques you can employ as a guerrilla marketer. So, apply your camouflage, keep low, and let’s get started.
What is guerrilla marketing?
A guerrilla fighter is someone fighting a lopsided war with limited equipment and little backup from any larger organization. Self-publishing authors are definitely guerrillas entering the fight for readers, but authors working with publishing houses can also find that they’re handed limited resources and left to sort things out for themselves.
Guerrilla marketing is all about doing a lot with a little, and for authors that means an approach built on two core concepts:
Spending time and effort instead of money,
Choosing tactics that offer maximum reward for limited input.
When it comes to the first concept, there isn’t much to say that we didn’t cover in Nobody Beats The Triangle, But You Can Be Prepared For It: you can use time and effort to make up for a small budget, but you have to plan ahead to do so well. Of course, time and effort are limited, and that’s where we come to the second core concept.
Guerrilla marketing uses sparse resources to incredible effect.CLICK TO TWEET
It’s not enough to just plug away at your marketing. You can only do so much, and at a certain level, money can achieve a reach that one person’s maximum effort just can’t. That means that you need to be pouring the resources you do have into the actions that will give you the biggest reward. For example, getting forty random people to read your book is nothing compared to putting it in the hands of one prominent book blogger. Likewise, a marketing campaign targeted at a group likely to be interested in your subject matter has far more value than a bigger campaign with a more general focus.
In this way, it’s not enough to keep working and hope for the best; you have to work smart and hard, and neither really works without the other. But that assumes that guerrilla marketing works at all, so the question is… does it?
What guerrilla marketing does
Marketing doesn’t work quite how many people think, especially at different levels. For the biggest sellers, advertising isn’t about persuading someone to buy a product. When Coke advertise, they’re usually not trying to make you think Coke is a good product; they’re already big enough that they achieved that, so their advertising is geared more towards remaining ubiquitous. The big sellers just need to keep reminding customers that they exist – that they’re available for whoever wants them. Then, whenever the customer goes to buy that type of product, it’s their brand that comes to mind. Get big enough and potential customers don’t think ‘I want a soda’, they think ‘I want a Coke’.
This may sound specific to a certain type of product, but it’s also true for fiction. At this point, J.K. Rowling doesn’t need to advertise how good her work is. The brand is so big that it’s more effective to simply focus on telling people there’s something new under its umbrella (and if they can also attract potential new readers, that’s a good secondary goal). Rowling sold a huge number of scripts for Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, even though it’s a medium with which many readers have no familiarity. As long as she keeps up a stream of new ‘products’ and the standard doesn’t dip enough to drive away her base, her marketing only ever has to say ‘remember me?’ This is why so many book adverts for established authors are along the lines of ‘The NEW book by X’; the brand is big enough that it’s doing the selling for them.
Different products rely on different types of marketing, and self-published authors shouldn’t be using the same tactics as bestsellers.CLICK TO TWEET
That’s not what guerrilla marketing is about, and it’s not something you’re going to be able to achieve on your own. Likewise, guerrilla marketing isn’t – and stick with me here – about finding individual readers.
This is the domain of mid-size marketing; people see your advert and they know your book is for sale, maybe they’ll buy it. This is the type of marketing where it’s worth putting billboards in train stations – with enough money, widespread marketing brings in enough readers to pay for itself.
This type of marketing isn’t usually that effective for books (unless they have a specific, unique role that lodges in people’s heads), and it’s not really feasible for guerrilla marketers. It’s hard for one person to advertise their book so widely that the number of readers they get back justifies the effort.
Instead, guerrilla marketing is effective as a cumulative effort. It doesn’t just net individual readers (though, again, that’s a good secondary goal), it creates an environment in which your book is being discussed. Ideally, it turns the people who encounter the marketing directly into your salespeople.
In marketing his book The Neal Pollack Anthology of American Literature, the titular author held a reading in a train station bathroom. The aim wasn’t to advertise to the few people who attended, but rather to create the type of story that news outlets would be hungry to report, and report they did. Pollack reached a huge audience with his work, communicating its irreverent nature and setting it up as a talking point; a level of marketing success far in excess of his budget or even time commitment.
Modern marketing has more than one audience, and the first isn’t always the biggest.CLICK TO TWEET
A less creative example might be a carefully calculated competition. Offer an interesting prize, extend the competition long enough to get people talking about it (and your work), and you reach a host of people for the cost of rewarding one. Ideally, you’ll also have a compelling website to direct them to and be collecting the email addresses of entrants to form a mailing list. Maybe your prize, or the conditions of the competition, are even unique enough to get you some press.
This is where guerrilla marketing works; carefully considered, meticulously executed moves that make the most of your time, money, and effort. I’ll get on to exactly how you can apply that logic in part 2 of this article, but for now, let’s close by looking at a case study of great guerrilla marketing in action.
The success of Masquerade
In 1979, Kit Williams published Masquerade, a book of art that tells the story of a hare delivering a splendid necklace to the sun. Concerned that people didn’t focus on the details in art books, and challenged by publisher Tom Maschler to do something new, Williams created a book that was also a treasure hunt. With the release of the book, Williams declared that he had also created the golden necklace from the story, and that the book contained all the information anyone could need to find it.
The story of the treasure hunt itself, and how the book worked as a set of clues, is fascinating (and skillfully related here), but suffice to say that Williams’ announcement was a staggering piece of guerrilla marketing. Williams couldn’t have foreseen the interest that would be aroused or how long the story would remain in the public consciousness, with news reports (and thus more advertising) breaking out whenever someone had a wild theory. Indeed, even the controversy surrounding how the treasure hunt was eventually resolved catapulted it back into public consciousness. For his time, effort, and skill, Williams sold hundreds of thousands of copies worldwide, and books (like Bamber Gascoigne’s Quest for the Golden Hare) have even been written about the process itself.
Creativity doesn’t have to stop with the book itself – artistic marketing is both possible and effective.CLICK TO TWEET
In the computer age, this type of marketing is even more effective. Since fans can now communicate across great distance, ‘game’ marketing can create communities and arouse huge interest for comparatively little input, as was the case with Alex Hirsch’s Gravity Falls: Journal 3, which relied on a variety of code-breaking and treasure-hunting activities to create a vocal, close-knit community of fans. (Something I talked about in Want A Cult Following? Hide Secrets In Your Writing.)
With blogs, Youtube channels, and even major news outlets hungry for content, the right piece of guerrilla marketing can be an absolute game changer.
Guerrilla warfare
So, that’s why you should consider guerrilla marketing and the logic behind some of the most successful tactics in the marketplace. Next, check out Everything You Need To Know About Guerrilla Book Marketing – Part 2, in which we’ll dive into how you can design and carry out your own successful guerrilla marketing.
What’s the hardest part of marketing our book, and how have you worked around marketing constraints in the past? Let me know in the comments below, and check out our extensive marketing archive for more great advice.

boats ease into the harbor, bearing real suspicious cargo
1. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were 131,200 people employed as writers and authors in the United States in 2016. If you assume writers work an average of 8 hours a day, that writing is 10% efficient, and that 5% of writers are worth reading, the United States produces 131,200 * 8 * 0.1 * 0.05 / 24 / 365 * 12 ~ 7.2 months of quality reading material each day. Even if you assume that only 0.1% of writers are worth reading, then that's still 4.4 days of reading per day of writing in just the United States. It's physically impossible to keep up with all the good writing being produced, even without sleeping, and setting aside catching up on the centuries of backlog.
When you look at even more popular and efficient media like streaming and YouTube content, the numbers are even scarier. The world is producing more information than even the world can reasonably consume.
Writing in the face of that knowledge feels wasteful, like driving an SUV or golfing. At the same time, writing has a fundamental urgency to it.
When I write, I'm forced to vocalize and confront my beliefs. I've written essays where, having finished, I don't agree with anything that I’ve said. It's like I've built up this latent energy by reading and thinking and watching, and I need to write to convert that energy, a muddy fuel of insights and exaltations and fears, into action and belief.
Reading good writing, I feel this total connection to humanity, on a primal and ineffable level. And trying to write well, I feel that connection again.
So, I guess, to whoever's reading this, I’m grateful you've chosen to share your time with me, and I hope you get whatever you need and whatever you're missing out of it.
2. On a practical note, I've been spending a lot of time reading about personal finance lately and want to summarize what I’ve learned. I've been fortunate enough not to have to worry about my finances for most of my life, but I realized a couple months ago that having my entire net worth parked in a Citi savings account was blatantly irresponsible. Panicking, I overcompensated.
Fortunately, the most prevalent and reliable personal finance advice is all straightforward. Still, given that I wasn't familiar with it, and apparently my parents weren't either, I figure there's value here. If you already have your life in order, feel free to skip this section.
Re: banks, don't use banks with physical locations. Physical locations are expensive, and you pay for them with the interest on your savings and the premiums on your loans. Online banks like Ally and Alliant Credit Union offer much better rates and services and also have better digital infrastructure.
There are a lot of online banks with various costs and benefits, but Ally and Alliant seem to be the most popular and reliable. I have some money in both right now, but I've mostly been using Ally because it has better integration with other online platforms.
Re: brokerages, that logic still applies. Use Vanguard, not Fidelity.
Re: investing, put all your money in a U.S. market index fund, ideally VTSAX, and forget about it until retirement. Services like Betterment or Wealthfront, which algorithmically invest your savings, are a reasonable alternative. However, they charge $25 per $10,000 they manage for you, and it's unclear whether they outperform plain index funds by enough to justify their price. They do provide some tax optimization services which likely cover their cost for accounts with $100,000 or more.
I'm currently using Betterment because my friend sent me a referral link with the first 3 months free, so I figured I might as well try it and reevaluate after the trial. I'm happy so far. I like that it's less involved than using a brokerage, and my account has almost enough to appropriately benefit from tax-loss harvesting.
This is my referral link, if that sounds interesting to you.
Re: credit cards, they're not worth learning about unless you inherently enjoy solving complicated systems. Personally, my ultimate plan is to get a 2% cash back card, the Amazon Prime card (for 5% back on Amazon purchases), the Uber Visa (for 4% back on restaurants and 3% back on travel), and the Amex Blue Cash (for 3% back on groceries). Cash back isn't as rewarding as travel points or signing bonuses, in terms returns per dollar spent, but those games are much more complicated for just an additional 2-4% back.
If you're having trouble getting approved for credit lines, it will likely be worthwhile to learn everything: about credit scores, secured cards, how to efficiently build a credit profile, etc. A lot of why I'm not interested in travel points and signing bonuses is that the additional 2-4% back I'd get from them could only be spent on things I don't care much about, like fancy flights and hotels. But the difference between getting a 2+% discount on everything and not is enormous.
3. I've spent an unhealthy amount of time watching YouTube lately. YouTube has been seductive substitute for games because it isn't obviously useless. When I watch videos on fashion, personal finance, self-improvement, and so on, I feel like I'm making progress even if the information in the videos is useless. There's something inherently satisfying and exhilarating about watching videos at 2x speed.
As a result, I've incidentally learned about the economics of YouTube, which are fascinating. Like, the idea of even a single media company focused entirely on YouTube content is wild to me. Yet there they are, the young thousands. There's just a tremendous amount of money in YouTube, such that it’s almost difficult to comprehend the scale.
Like, a video with 12 million views @ 1/3 a cent per view represents $40k, a respectable annual income. 12 million views is a lot, but it's a small fraction of the attention that YouTube commands. Like, there are random tours of capsule hotels in Japan with that many views. The music video for Gangnam Style must have made almost 100 million dollars.
In a real twist of late capitalism, content creators get paid more or less based on their primary demographics. Like younger women are less likely to use an ad blocker than 20-something men, so a greater fraction of their views get monetized. Views from wealthier countries like the U.S. and Canada are worth more than views from poorer ones.
There's so much at stake in getting us to click around these websites. And it's not just recommender systems. Whole content companies are fighting for even a couple minutes of our attention.
4. In Lineup, by a Seattle company called Cut Media, hosts are tasked to sort a lineup of strangers into different categories. In one video, for example, the hosts need to guess the lineup's sexual orientations. In another, they need to match people to their outfits. The general idea, of course, is to demonstrate how limited stereotypes are. The hosts typically don't take their task seriously, and their inability to perform it is humorous, heartwarming, enlightening, etc.
Ironically, from a purely statistical standpoint, the series makes a much stronger case for stereotypes than against them. For example, in the video about guessing occupations, a host choosing at random would get an average of 1 person right and would get 3 or more matches only 8% of the time. Yet every one of the 4 hosts got at least 1 match, they managed an average of 2.25 matches altogether, and 2 of the hosts got 3 or more. Those numbers look like failures on the surface, but stereotypes actually led the hosts to perform significantly better than chance.
Better than chance is, of course, not the strictest criterion.
5. Two series I’ve found helpful are Glamour's How One Woman Spends Her $N Salary and CNBC's Living On $N A Year in Location. I've been struggling lately to figure out how I should spend my income and the insight into how other people relate to money was valuable.
I feel like I'm making enough money now that I should buy whatever happiness is available to me, but I have no idea what to buy. The things I really want – like reading more, being healthier, having better self-discipline – aren't readily for sale. I used to think it was ridiculous that people spent thousands of dollars on life coaches, gym memberships, logos, and so on, but I'm starting to understand why. At this point, I'd happily spend hundreds of dollars on a guarantee that my life would even marginally improve.
At the same time, I guess opportunities to trade money for happiness will inevitably present themselves over time, and maybe there’s no need to seek them out.
6. I feel that, as a society, we're far too private about our finances. If we talked openly our income, for example, the prevalence and severity of the gender pay gap would have become obvious decades earlier. Everyone with credit card debt would have someone in the life to tell them how stupid credit card debt and how important living within our means is. Maybe economists and sociologists could even determine what purchases actually make us happier, and what we only think makes us happy.
I think we've adapted to obscure our finances because we have this like limbic compulsion to organize ourselves into hierarchies and fight based on where we land, and income is a very natural hierarchy. But if we just resist that compulsion, we'd collectively benefit from greater knowledge.
Like, in decision theory, more information is inherently good. We can only interpret it badly.
7. At the same time, I guess I have little interest in writing about my own finances. Not out of any desire to hide them, I just don't find the topic particularly compelling. But if you'd like to know, contact me through whatever channel and I'd be happy to share my accounting sheet and answer whatever questions you have.
Not that I have any great wisdom to share, clearly.
8. There's a “5 Minute Rule” in self-help theory that instructs people to complete tasks will take less than 5 minutes as soon as they think of them and are able to. I'm a fan of the 5 Minute Rule and have made a similar rule for myself where if I need something and it costs less than $20, I'll buy it without hesitation or deliberation.
Like, I was opening a box with scissors a couple weeks ago and I couldn’t cleanly cut the threads in the packing tape. My hands hurt trying to push the scissors through. So I bought an utility knife for $3 and opening boxes has been far more pleasant since it arrived. I noticed my wrist was hurting at work, so I bought a better mousepad for $8. And so on.
Overall, one thing I have learned is to buy the things I need and the things I know will make me happier. Maybe that should have been obvious.
9. Yield and overcome; Bend and be straight; Empty and be full; Wear out and be new; Have little and gain; Have much and be confused. Be truly whole, and all things will come to you.

Practical Tips for Studying Abroad
There are lots of google-able lists of best things to do to study abroad, so I won’t cover everything. But I do have a few practical tips for college students interested in studying abroad.
I studied abroad a few years ago in Costa Rica, and these things all helped me:
Side note: I use college and university pretty interchangeably, because that’s what we do where I’m from.
1. Study Abroad Office
Even if it’s on the opposite side of campus, get your ass over there. They will have a zillion resources for you-- pamphlets, flyers, program booklets, and trained staff who are familiar with most of the big name programs and study abroad companies.
Speak with a staff member at the Study Abroad Office. You are not bothering them. They are paid to help you. Their job description includes helping students figure shit out. Their purpose is to help you out. 99% of the time they are very nice and friendly. You may have to make an appointment, because certain times of year they are helping a lot of students at once. That doesn’t mean you are less important-- you just might need to set up a specific time where they can help you one-on-one.
Go to a Study Abroad Fair. They will have students from your college/university who studied abroad as well as several companies who try to sell you on going with their program. Take their pamphlets and booklets. If you are really interested, give them your school email. Listen to the students who have been to your ideal location. Ask them questions. Get excited!
In each program booklet, there is usually a guide to what major is suited to each of the study abroad locations/programs. For example, my major was biology, so I wanted to pick a study abroad program where I could take biology classes. I ended up going to Costa Rica with a company called USAC, because they offered (a) tropical biology electives (b) the credits transferred to my school (c) i could also take cultural classes while I was there. You’ll want to find a program that works for your major and your specific needs.
2. Planning
Start looking into your study abroad options approximately two semesters before you plan to go. Deadlines creep up fast, and usually there is a LOT of paperwork that needs to get filed before you can go. You’ll need a passport, travel insurance, and a ton of paperwork needs to be signed by both you and your school and your study abroad program. You need to be organized about it, and give yourself plenty of time to deal with people who lose your paperwork and for walking all over campus to get signatures (it happens). You don’t want to be caught 3 hours before the deadline only to be told someone is out of the office for the day and can’t sign your paperwork.
Talk with your academic advisor for your major. Tell them you want to study abroad. Figure out how this will affect your class schedule and your academic plan. Are you determined to graduate in 4 years? Find a study abroad program that includes interesting classes from your major. Do you want to graduate in 5 years? You may have a little more wiggle room.
MAKE SURE YOUR CREDITS CAN TRANSFER! I cannot stress this enough. Please, please, please double and triple check this. Run it by the study abroad office AND your academic advisor.
Troubleshooting: Your advisor doesn’t know shit. Ah yes, the bane of every student’s existence: the academic advisor who doesn’t know what they are doing. I had one of these. I checked in with him once a semester about my plan, but he always told me the wrong information and if I had been depending only on him, I would have been severely fucked.
So. I ended up secretly seeing a different professor for advice about my academic plan. I also used my school’s website extensively to figure out what requirements I still needed to fill.
Finding a better advisor can rub people the wrong way, so I would develop a rapport with one of the long time academics who have been teaching at your school for a millennia. Then broach the topic about classes. A lot of the older professors are well aware that some people in the department aren’t good advisors-- they’ve heard about it before.
That said, never badmouth a professor in front of another professor. It’s very unprofessional and makes you look bad. But I might say something like, “Dr. [x] told me that I didn’t need to take another physics class, but I was so sure that I did. Do you know if they changed the requirements recently?”
You may be able to request a new advisor. Only do this if you are 110% certain that you will never need to take a class with that professor ever again. Otherwise you might get yourself into more trouble.
You can also ask for advice in the office dedicated to your major. (Usually each major will have an office dedicated to it on campus.) Usually there is someone there that can help you!
3. Picking a program
Things to consider when picking a program: what your major is, what language you want to learn / what cultures you are interested in, cost, and safety.
Types of programs and cost:
Direct Exchange: means you will pay the same price as your regular tuition. Usually these programs have an agreement between the university abroad and your home university. A very good option if you want to keep your spending somewhat the same.
Through a program provider: you will coordinate between your home school and a program provider (who will organize mostly everything for you). Costs vary. Some are more expensive than your home university and some are less expensive.
Summer programs: what it says on the tin. Usually shorter than spring/fall programs, and have a more intensive work load, and costs marginally less. A good option if you have a busy schedule and don’t want to be gone for a full semester during the year.
Language and Culture
One of the best things about studying abroad is learning about a different language and culture. I would highly recommend going to a country where they speak a different language than you do.
It would be extremely helpful if you knew a little bit of the language before you left! A good place to start preparing is Duolingo, Memrise, and any variety of podcasts that are out there for you to download for free. Also check your campus for language exchange programs, where you can set up a time to meet with classmates from different countries. You can practice each other’s target languages together!
Remember that you are an ambassador of sorts for your home country. For the love of God, don’t be obnoxious and self-entitled. You need to put your best foot forward and present a good name for your home country. Don’t prove bad stereotypes right.
Living with a host family
THE BEST PART OF STUDY ABROAD, IMO. You will adjust to the culture much better if you live with a host family. You will also learn so so so much more, practice your target language every day, improve your listening skills astronomically, and be able to make strong cross-cultural connections. You may even become close enough that you get to visit them again in the future!
Go with the flow and accept differences. Don’t view the differences as better or worse than your home country-- it is merely a different way of doing things. Adjust your behavior to what is done in your new country. For example, if everyone takes off their shoes before entering a home-- make sure you do that too! If someone tells you that you will get sick if you are barefoot on cold tile floors-- put on sandals!
Try every food they put in front of you. In a lot of cultures, it is offensive to refuse the offer of food. Accept food when it is offered with a smile. Does the food smell strange or disgust you? Keep an open mind and try it. You might even like it!
Culture shock and reverse culture shock
I didn’t experience culture shock when I arrived in Costa Rica, but I remember being blindsided by reverse culture shock when I got home. My best tip is to make strong friendships with your classmates and host families. They help you through the adjustment period immensely. And when you get home? Keep in touch with the friends you made abroad. Tell them how hard it is to adjust back to your home country. And know it gets better.
4. Safety
Are you visibly LGBTQ+?
Look extensively into the country’s recent LGBTQ+ debates. Make sure that you will be safe there.
Do you belong to a racial, ethnic, or religious minority?
Look into the country’s history with people from your background. Look into the recent political movements. Look into the recent social issues being debated in that country. Is there a rise in islamophobic, antisemitic, anti-black, anti-latino, anti-[x] sentiment in that country? Are they dealing with anti-immigrant sentiment focused on people that look like you?
Political turmoil
There are a lot of countries across the world that are in political turmoil right now. Please look extensively into the current political debates and issues.
Sign up for alerts about areas to avoid.
This is the link to the US Consulate, which gives you current information for people traveling abroad:
https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/traveladvisories/traveladvisories.html
Remember that studying abroad should be a joyous, exciting experience. Don’t go anywhere that your life could be in danger.
That’s all for now, but as I think of things I might try to make a second post.
Keep in mind that this is all coming from someone who lives in the USA. Things may be different depending on where you live and where you are planning on going!
tl;dr: You need to do a lot of research and planning before you go, but in the end it will be so worth it! Get excited! Have fun!

How To Create Your Ideal Client Avatar
Attract Your Perfect Clients With a Specific and detailed Client Avatar.
As you’ve found this page, you probably have some idea of what client avatars are, but let’s dig a little deeper and look at how to use them in the right way to access your ideal clients.
What is a client avatar?
Simply put, it’s a fictional persona of your ideal client. Note that this is not the same as your target market. If you’ve been running a business for any length of time, then you no doubt have a very good idea of who your target market is. But a client avatar takes this a step further. Rather than trying to appeal to an audience, you’re trying to appeal to a specific person.
Having a client avatar will allow you to identify not just whom you’re talking with, but to actually understand them on a deeper level. When you can do this, you’ll be able to address them directly in all of your content and marketing materials.
Whether you’re creating copy for your website, your email newsletter, paid advertisements or even YouTube videos, you can target it specifically to your client avatar as though you had them opposite the desk in front of you. By imagining you’re having a conversation with your ideal client, you’ll naturally be writing (or creating) specifically for them.
Doing this will enable you to create a real connection rather than just appealing to a group of people (your target market). This is the big difference between your avatar and your market. Of course, you can (and probably should) have more than one client avatar. You probably serve more than one type of person in your business, especially if you offer different services and/or products.
If you have staff, get them involved. Brainstorm! Everyone has different ideas and I have no doubt that they will think of things that didn’t even occur to you.
Client Avatar Stages
There’s no right or wrong way of making up your client avatar, but there are some best practices and ways to make sure you cover all that you need to. I like to split it into three stages:
Details and Demographics
Goals and Motivation
Challenges and Obstacles
Details and Demographics
This section is all about basic data and is the section that’s most closely linked with your target market as it contains very similar details. There is one huge difference however. The best way to demonstrate this is to show you an example of an Avatar used here at WDM.
This is Paul Sutton
Paul is 45 years old. He’s male, lives in Bury St Edmunds (in Suffolk), and he’s a health club owner. He’s also married with two children.
You may wonder how having children could possibly be relevant and perhaps it’s not, but by giving details like this, it helps to give your avatar character and make them a little more real. This way you can better target them when creating content for you business. Paul earns £70k a year. He went to college, but not university.
So far, most of this sounds fairly standard and exactly the type of facts you’d be looking at when determining your target market. But here’s where that big difference comes in that I mentioned earlier.
Backstory...
When I’m writing content or creating a video I want to see Paul, My Avatar, as a real person, not just a bunch of statistics. If I want to connect with Paul at this level, then I need to know more about him, not just facts and figures. That’s why I’ve created him a backstory. It doesn’t contain his entire life history but it does tell me a little about him and what makes him who he is.
Paul has an established health club with a great reputation. He’s looking to take it to the next level and bring in an operations manager so he can focus on the bigger picture and take more time out without his business being affected. Although Paul has to use computers for his work, he’s not tech-savvy and doesn’t like dealing with technical issues. He’s open to new ideas when it comes to marketing and managing his online growth. His website’s okay, but it’s a little dated and not really much more than an online brochure.
You’ll see how these details further come into play very soon.
Goals and Motivation
What are Paul’s goals and his values? What motivates him?
As we know, Paul would really like to hire an operations manager. This will allow him to focus on the bigger picture, but also to take a little time out of the business. To facilitate this role, Paul knows that he needs to increase membership sign-ups by 30 percent (preferable in the next 12 months).
Why? What’s Pauls motivation?
Well, he may be a businessman but for him (and most people) it’s not just success in business that we strive for. We’d like to also improve other areas of our lives.
I mentioned taking time out of the business. Paul would like to spend more time with his family and he’d like to get back into some of his old hobbies. He’s spent most of the last few years running his business, and now he’d like to devote a bit more time to leisure activities. He also feels that he never travelled as much as he’d have liked so he’s keen to make up for lost time.
Values
What are Pauls values? Well, he worked long and hard to build his business. It’s important to him that it stands the test of time and maintains a great reputation.
So he values outstanding customer service.
He wants his Health club to be welcoming, comfortable and unintimidating. Remember, this is a health club, not a muscle gym. He wants people to feel warm and invited. He also, of course, genuinely wants to help his members achieve their health, fitness, and relaxation goals.
He values his staff highly and would like to help them with professional development where he can. He believes in promoting within where possible.
Challenges and Obstacles
What challenges and obstacles does Paul face?
What’s stopping him from achieving his goals?
Well, he has a website, but it isn’t converting well. it’s really just an online brochure. It does generate phone calls but there’s no real system in place for dealing with these. He’s not really doing anything with his website or measuring conversions. He doesn’t have any analytics to know what’s working and what isn’t. You’ll probably see it written or hear me say it many times but if we don’t measure, we can’t improve.
Paul has low client retention after year 1 ends. This isn’t because of poor service or anything negative. Its simply the standard in his industry. People will often join a gym or health club and not renew the following year because well, let’s face it, most of us have done this at some point (I know I have). But, if there were something he could do to improve retention, that would make a big difference to his business. It’s usually far easier to retain a client than gain a new one.
Paul is also concerned about losing business to larger competitors with better marketing strategies and perhaps bigger budgets, such as Bannatyne’s, which is of course a well-known brand and also local to him. He needs to find a way to make his club stand out against this competition.
Paul is very busy. His role as owner is demanding and he doesn’t have enough time to complete his tasks (or he certainly feels that way). He’s not sure how to scale the business from where it is now and he feels a bit trapped in a cycle because he can’t see how to free up more time so he can move things forward (focus on the bigger picture).
I’ve learned a lot about Paul but how will this help me in my business?
So What?
I’ve learned a lot about Paul but how will this help me in my business.
I’ve identified that Paul is my ideal client. But how does this information help me?
Knowing what Paul would like to achieve, what motivates him, and why he does what he does allows me to tailor the services I offer specifically to meet those needs.
I can see now that Paul will benefit from a website redesign that engages visitors and encourages them to take action. This might be to book an appointment, become a member, or order a spa-package.
I know that automation will help reduce his admin time, his costs and increase sign-ups. It needs to be easy to use and non-techie because he’s obviously not interested in that stuff. He doesn’t do technical. He has enough on his plate and doesn’t want to deal with hosting, website maintenance, back-ups, and security. With this knowledge, I know create a website care-plan that will be perfect for Paul.
I can install analytics on his website and display them in a way that’s simple but allows him to see analyse website visitor behaviour and also measure conversions. His care plan can include making improvements based on the data from his analytics.
Paul will probably be interested in some kind of lead generation system too, that to entices and draws in new members. This would include landing pages and full email automation that ensures everyone gets the right email at the right time with no manual work required by him or his team. Once it’s in place, it will run itself 24/7. As long as his subscribers are being sent the right e-mails at the right time, they can then be given an offer that’s specific to them.  They can also join or pay online depending on what the service is. This is far more likely to bring in new business than the simple phone number he currently has.
Paul would also benefit from ongoing newsletter that offers advice, help and perhaps incentives to stay a member after their year 1 contract ends. As long as the emails are well-timed, especially coming up to that 10-12 month period, he’s far more likely to be able to retain more clients after that first year.
To further increase traffic to his website (or business in general), a local marketing campaign would be extremely beneficial.
I can offer him an audit/review that includes Google Maps, and his ‘Google my business’ page. Perhaps offer some optimisation to help him rank higher for relevant terms to his health club.
The same applies with SEO. Paul would really benefit from a local SEO campaign to make sure that he is showing in Google when (the right) people are searching for those kinds of services. I could also look at targeted pay-per-click campaigns specifically to his area.
It might be a good idea to suggest that Paul creates a refer-a-friend incentive for any of his members so they can bring in people and perhaps get either a discount, a free month’s membership, a free massage or something similar if a friend becomes a member.
Because I have a detailed Ideal client Avatar, I now have an array of specific services that I can offer Paul. And, because they’re tailored to his needs, I know that not only is he likely to agree to them, but also (and perhaps more importantly), they’re actually going to help him achieve his goals.
Paul will be an extremely happy and long-term client. In turn, I’ll feel great for being able to help him achieve what he’s set out to do.
So now I’ve built up a specific image of my ideal client. I can speak directly to them in all my marketing efforts.
This includes my website, my services, my email newsletter segmentation (an email autoresponder that segments subscribers based on their actions and ensure they only receive emails that they are interested in), and my video content.
When your content is designed for your ideal client, you are far more likely to attract…
Wait for it….
YOUR IDEAL CLIENT!

How to Make Extra Money Using Airbnb?
Having a spare bedroom comes in handy whenever your in-laws come to town, old college friend’s visit, or your bachelor brother passes through on his thanks to a music festival.
But what are you alleged to do thereupon empty room during the opposite 350 days of the year? You’ll rent it out and make a stash of money by becoming an Airbnb host.
Well, it's not necessary to have a house to make money rather you can make money on Airbnb without owning property.
What is Airbnb?
Airbnb may be a vacation rental website where people looking to hire out their home or spare bedroom can connect with those that are trying to find an area to remain. It’s a reasonable alternative to staying in a hotel plus how for you to form extra cash!
Think of it as running your bed and breakfast, except you’re only handling one set of guests at a time. Those looking to hire out their spaces are called “hosts and people needing places to remain are “guests” (shocking, we know).
Now before learning how to start an Airbnb business, it's important to know how Airbnb works.
How does Airbnb work?
Step 1: Create your listing
Describe your space and provides details about what you've got to supply. Is it a quiet bungalow far away from it all? Maybe a studio within the heart of the city? Believe what sets your home apart and makes it the place to crash while in town. Make certain to feature photos that bring your listing to life! How else will they realize that great breakfast area you have?
Able to start saving? Start a free attempt of Ramsey+ today.
Creating an inventory with Airbnb is free, which suggests you won’t be out of anything if your rental stays empty for 2 months.
Step 2: Get your space ready
Look around the space and make an inventory of things you would like to form it functional and homey. Does one need extra towels and washcloths for your guests? How a few local guides of popular restaurants within the area? Before you get too fancy, don’t ditch the foremost important thing: clean bed sheets!
Step 3: Welcome your guests
When your guests arrive, it’s best to be there face to face and provides them a lay of the land. But you'll also do that through an email or a printed-out welcome packet if you won’t be there. Allow them to know where they will find things they could need like dishes, towels and therefore the TV.
This is also an honest time to travel over house rules. Are there areas of your home that are off-limits? Can they use the highest shelf of your refrigerator? What are they alleged to do with wet towels? Can they use your washing machine? Know the answers to all or any of these questions before your guests even show up (and maybe even include them therein welcome packet).
Step 4: Collect your money
Luckily, Airbnb handles this for you, so you don’t need to worry about any money changing hands. They’ll send you payment through PayPal or direct deposit—but not before they collect a third service charge first.
Here’s another thing to remember: although your guests are charged once they make the reservation, you won’t be paid until 24 hours after they check your home. You’ll want to stay that in mind when you’re planning out your monthly budget.
Step 5: pack up and reset for subsequent guest
This should go without saying, but make certain you clean out space before a subsequent person arrives. Would you like to remain in a room with damp towels and used sheets? Treat others how you’d want to be treated within the same situation.
How do I set my Airbnb rates?
Airbnb allows you to set the worth of your listing. So, you'll adjust it throughout the year supported travel peaks in your area like sporting events, concerts, and in-demand weather seasons. And don’t worry about arising with a price out of nothingness. Airbnb will make pricing suggestions for you supported your location and sort of property.
What are the principles for Airbnb hosts and guests?
Hosts:
There’s an inventory of basic requirements that each Airbnb host must follow. Hosts need to provide basic toiletries and bedding, be responsive toward booking inquiries, accept reservation requests, and check out to take care of a high rating. Don’t ditch the slew of safety precautions you would like to require into account!
Of course, you got to know the principles of your city and state when it involves Airbnb hosting. Many zoning laws require you to register or get a permit before you'll have an Airbnb guest stay on your property. And if you don’t own your space, it can get even trickier since your landlord may or might not offer you the green light.
Read more: how to be an Airbnb host without owning property?
 Guests:
Airbnb has its suggestions of the way to be a considerate guest. But don’t forget: since you’re the one doing the Airbnb hosting, you get to return up with a group of guidelines for your guests to follow. This is often an excellent thanks to making expectations clear from the get-go. And ideally, your guests are going to be kind enough to abide by them.
How much does it cost to host an Airbnb?
Listing your room on Airbnb is free, but there are many other costs to weigh.
Maintenance and Cleaning
The more your guest bathroom tub is employed, the more likely it'll leak, stop draining properly, or have a tile chipped off. Be prepared for maintenance and cleaning costs to eat up an outsized part of your budget.
To save money, consider doing the upkeep, repairs, and cleaning yourself. Just make certain you're taking under consideration the value of supplies and your time!

 Décor
Is your spare room/guest space already decorated and furnished? or even the larger question: is it appropriately decorated for guests who aren’t your family? If your idea of guest décor includes your son’s soccer team photo and Grandma Lucy’s quilt—you might want to rethink the scheme a touch.
Spruce up the place with a couple of affordable, classic pieces. Keep it simple and check out to not overcrowd the space. Don’t forget to incorporate functional items like clothing hangers, an evening stand, and shelving to assist your guests to store their belongings.
Supply
If you’re getting to host people in your home, confirm you've got the fundamentals covered. Don’t leave one lone washcloth for your guests once they need a stack of unpolluted towels. If you don’t have extra sets of towels, bed sheets, and pillows available already, then you’re getting to need to consider those up-front costs.
Oh, and pro tip: always keep ample amounts of loo paper readily available. Running out of that precious commodity may be sure thanks to scoring a negative review from your guests.
Safety
Airbnb offers accidental damage coverage on your home (up to 1,000,000 dollars of coverage, to be exact). They also offer Host Protection Insurance just in case a guest gets hurt while staying on your property. Just confirm you read their terms and conditions to completely understand what’s covered.
If having strangers in your home gives you a creepy-crawly feeling within the pit of your stomach, here’s something to ease your mind. While Airbnb doesn’t screen each guest, they are doing let hosts and guests rate one another. That way you'll feel more comfortable about who you’re letting into your house.

Apple MacBook Pro 13-inch (2020)
If you've got a big budget, you might have your eyes on a MacBook Pro. These are the most expensive Apple laptops around, and the latest model has a unique Touch Bar. This feature lives right above the keyboard, and it's a mini touchscreen that will display changing information, depending on what you're doing. If you're editing home videos in Final Cut, for example, the Touch Bar will turn into a mini timeline that lets you quickly navigate through your clips. If you're interested in the top-of-the-range model, see our review of the Apple MacBook Pro 2018 with Touch Bar.

Apple 15-inch MacBook Pro
This Apple is at the very top of the tree in terms of power, size and price. Putting the Pro moniker to good use, this six-core laptop is designed for the most power-hungry tasks such as video editing and computer-aided design. It will surely be overkill for anybody who doesn't do those tasks on a daily basis, though. This model has now been superseded by the 16-inch model, which we have not yet tested.

Apple Macbook Air 2020
This is the latest version of Apple's popular 13-inch laptop, which starts at under £1,000 for a model with an Intel Core i3 processor. We've testded the mid-range Core i5 model. It has a high resolution screen and a very attractive design, although keep in mind that the processor is a slower form of Core i5 than the one you'll find in the MacBook Pro.

Mac vs Windows vs Chromebooks
MacOS, Windows 10 and ChromeOS all have their own strengths and weaknesses. MacOS is buttery smooth and is the go-to operating system for many creative industries, but it also requires you to shell out a huge amount of money on a premium Apple device.
Tumblr media
MacBooks run smoothly and can keep viruses at bay, but they aren't cheap.
Windows, meanwhile is available on a huge range of devices from ultra-budget to super-premium and, for many, is still the operating system they know best. But it's not without its downsides: Windows 10 updates are still a major sticking point for many people, and the fact that Windows 10 doesn't run particularly smoothly on very cheap laptops.
That's where ChromeOS comes in. This operating system is little more than a fancy web browser, with web apps that work best when connected to the internet. There's a range of budget devices available, and a few premium options as well. There's no faffing with huge updates and since everything is in a browser, there shouldn't be any problems with programs crashing either.
See how MacOS stacks up against its rivals in ourMac vs Windows and Chromebookadvice guide.
What do I need to know about MacOS?
MacOS (formerly known as Mac OSX) is extra useful for people who own iPads and iPhones, with a host of clever features that lets you share and work on files seamlessly on all your devices. You can also make and receive calls on your computer; no need to reach for the phone any more. There's also the Siri voice assistant that'll let you ask questions, set reminders and issue other commands with just your voice.
The latest version of MacOS is called Catalina, which launched in Autumn 2019. This update added a host of new features, including the ability to run iPad apps on your MacBook, which will be handy for when you start a task on your tablet and then move over to your laptop. It also heavily redesigned several key Mac apps including iTunes, which has been split up into three separate programs for music, films and TV, and podcasts. Reminders, Notes and Photos have been overhauled, and you can now also use your iPad as a second screen for your MacBook. And, as ever, MacOS is arguably the best operating system to choose if you already own an iPhone; things sync and work together more seamlessly than other combinations of phones and laptops.
Itunes download apple store. ITunes is the world's easiest way to organize and add to your digital media collection. We are unable to find iTunes on your computer. To download from the iTunes Store, get iTunes now.

Selecting the right Mac laptop isn’t easy, with three core models and four versions of the MacBook Pro - Apple’s most powerful and versatile laptop - to choose from. How you select the best Mac to buy depends on several factors, including what you need it for and of course, budget. Mac laptops go from $1299 to $2399.
Apple essentially now has six laptops to choose from: MacBook, MacBook Air, MacBook Pro (13 and 15 inch screen), and the same 13 and 15 inch MacBook Pro, equipped with a Touch Bar and Touch ID.
If you’re considering buying a new Mac because yours is starting to slow down, there is a cheaper option. CleanMyMac X is a powerful and effective Mac declutter and cleaning tool - clearing away 62GB - on average, of junk that slows Macs down. You can download it here for free.
Options to consider when buying a Mac laptop
In this Mac buying guide, we cover the merits and downsides of each model, and outline the advantages of each option, depending on how you intend to use your Mac laptop. Here is a rundown of the options:
1. MacBook
First introduced in 2015 and refreshed in 2017, this is the sturdy and reliable MacBook, Apple’s core Mac laptop. Not the cheapest (starting at $1299), but oddly enough, the lightest in the range - even lighter than the MacBook Air.
It comes with four color options: Gold, Silver, Space Grey or Rose Gold. And you can pick from three base models:
1.2GHz dual-core Intel Core m3;
1.3GHz dual-core Intel Core i5;
1.4GHz dual-core Intel Core i7.
You can either select an 8GB or 16GB memory, with the option of a 256GB or 512GB SSD hard drive, giving you a decent amount of memory and processing power for work, studying and leisure.
One downside with the MacBook is it only comes with one USB-C port for the power charging and data transfer (a new version of a USB that isn’t widespread yet; which will probably mean buying an expensive adapter). It is fast and efficient, with around 10 hours battery life. Not the most powerful Mac laptop in the range, but a sturdy workhorse for the price.
2. MacBook Air
Slim and lightweight, the MacBook Air is ideal for commuters, students and those who need a laptop occasionally, but won’t need to use it all of the time. For those on a budget, this is definitely the best Mac to buy, starting at $999, making it cheaper than the MacBook.
It comes with a 13-inch screen, is only available in silver, and you can pick from two core models (1.8GHz, 128GB, or a 1.8GHz, 256GB); although both only come with 8GB of RAM. However, you can upgrade - at extra cost - to a 2.2GHz processor with 512GB worth of storage.
A few downsides include the fact that it still uses a 2015 model processor, and it isn’t powerful enough for gamers, video editors, vloggers and professional developers. It’s also lacking a future-proof feature, as it doesn't come with a USB-C port. An 11-inch version is now only available second hand, with the newer 13-inch version coming equipped with more connectivity ports than a MacBook and the original smaller Air, including a MagSafe 2, two USB 3.0 ports, Thunderbolt 2, and an SDXC card slot.
Ideal for those who don't want to carry a heavy laptop, although with it squeezing a similar amount of computing power in a smaller frame, it does weigh somewhat heavier than the more expensive MacBook. Something for students and those on a budget to keep in mind.
3. MacBook Pro: 13 and 15 inch
For working professionals, video producers, designers, developers, and anyone who prefers to use a Mac laptop, the MacBook Pro is the workhorse many know, trust, and would recommend. Equally, gamers also benefit from the speed and processing power contained within the MacBook Pro.
With the MacBook Pro, you get a range of base specs to choose from:
MacBook Pro - 13.3-inch - 2.3GHz dual-core Intel Core i5, or;
MacBook Pro - 13.3-inch - 2.5GHz dual-core Intel Core i7 processor;
MacBook Pro - 15.4-inch - 2.2GHz, 2.5GHz, or 2.8GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 processor.
Memory size options go from a 128GB to 1TB SSD hard drive in the smaller model, with 256GB to 1TB worth of memory in the 15-inch version. Both are available in space grey and silver.
Newer versions of both come with a Touch Bar and Touch ID; although Apple have made significant upgrades in other ways too, which has made some journalists question “whether the 13inch MacBook Pros deserve the 'Pro' name at all.” It is also worth noting that the older, 15-inch version runs on the same processor model as the MacBook and MacBook Air, which means the same physical connectivity options are included: a MagSafe 2, two USB 3.0 ports, Thunderbolt 2, and an SDXC card slot.
4. MacBook Pro: 13 and 15 inch (with Touch Bar and Touch ID)
As we mentioned above, these new models are worth their own section in this Mac Buyers guide.
In many ways, they're more powerful than the older models that lack the Touch Bar and Touch ID. Apple is taking biometric security seriously, with the Touch ID fingerprint sensor replacing the power button. Both of these features are powered by the Apple T1 chip, combining Apple's Secure Enclave architecture to authenticate biometric data (you’ll also find these on modern iOS devices) and the super-efficient processor from the Series 2 Apple Watch.
With this level of security, the Secure Enclave makes it impossible for third-party apps or malware to gain access to your fingerprint data, and everything your fingerprint protects. Apart from the security benefits, these MacBook Pros come with the following range of spec options:
MacBook Pro - 13.3-inch - 3.1GHz or 3.3GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 processor;
MacBook Pro - 13.3-inch - 3.5GHz dual-core Intel Core i7 processor;
MacBook Pro - 15.4-inch - 2.8GHz, 2.9GHz, or 3.1GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 processor.
Memory size options go from a 256GB to a 1TB SSD hard drive, with an impressive 2TB an option in the 15-inch version. Touch Bar models come with four USB-C ports, with one needed for the power cord, and both come with a headphone jack, although they don't have any other physical connectivity options.
Which Mac should I buy?
Even knowing all of the specs, memory options, information on processors, systems and connectivity ports, making a comparison is still not easy. So below, we've considered which is the best Apple laptop from a range of viewpoints, considering how they might be used and who is using them.
Best option for a portable laptop
When it comes to carrying a laptop around, something that will fit into a backpack, shoulder bag, or even mid-to-large handbag, the MacBook is the lightest and most portable. Most would assume - as the name suggests - the MacBook Air, but the 2015 redesign made it heavier and comes with a lower resolution screen.
Unfortunately, you do make some sacrifices for portability, with only one USB-C and, as the cheapest in the range, it is less powerful than other Mac laptops. But for those who want something easy to carry around, light, portable, and cheap, the MacBook beats the others.
Best Mac laptop for students
Students need laptops in classes, lectures and libraries - even when researching online, libraries - many equipped for modern laptops and tablets - are ideal places to work. Students need something portable and cheap - although many can stretch a budget a little further with the Apple education discount - making the MacBook an ideal option.
Although for a little more computing power and something that takes up slightly less space in a bag, the Air is always worth looking at for students. Unless you are taking a computing, games or video course; in which case, neither the Air nor MacBook is an ideal option.
Ideal on a low budget
When price is the deciding factor, you can’t beat the MacBook Air. For those that need a fairly powerful, fairly light device, the 128GB 13-inch Air starts at $999 - compared to $1299 for the next cheapest option, the 256GB 12-inch MacBook. Upgrades to the memory or processor cost more, so if you’re on a budget, think carefully before wanting to customise.
Best for battery life
Although there isn’t a huge amount of difference when it comes to battery life, most Mac laptops come equipped with a minimum of 10 hours of Wi-Fi web browsing and/or iTunes video streaming.
Beating the others is the “all day battery” that is included in the 13-inch MacBook Air, with 12 hours available before you need to use a charger. However, as any Mac users knows, the older a laptop gets, the weaker it charges and quicker a charge disappears, so it is always useful to have a power cord handy when you are planning to use a Mac laptop for a prolonged period of time.
Need a lot of storage?
Storage is a moveable feast, and something Apple is consistently generous with. Not only can you upgrade all the way to 2TB - with the 15-inch MacBook Pro (with Touch Bar/ID) - but you can use cloud-storage and external hard drives. But when it comes to physical storage you can access directly within a laptop, the 2TB Touch Bar/ID 15-inch Pro beats the others.
Although the good news with Mac laptops is every one of them now comes with SSD memory, which is far more efficient than the memory in older models. It is also less likely to break, since these do not include moving mechanical parts.
Fastest Mac processor
Again, the 15-inch MacBook Pro (with Touch Bar/ID) is the fastest and most powerful. The most expensive customised model will come equipped with a 3.1GHz i7 quad-core processor, which when coupled with 16GB of RAM means it will power through almost any task you can throw at it.
Since the processor is a quad-core, it is significantly more powerful than the others, many of which use dual or m3 processors. Not that the others aren't powerful; they just aren't as powerful as the top-of-the range Pro.
Best Buy Refurbished Mac Laptops
Which is best for work?
This largely depends on the type of work you do. For intensive tasks, then you should opt for the most powerful version you can afford. Combined with generous screen real estate, and that could mean the 15-inch MacBook Pro (with Touch Bar/ID).
But not everyone needs that much screen, or that much processing power and RAM. Others simply connect a laptop to a larger screen, giving them useful portability. If that is the case and you don't need a Mac laptop that could open a hole in the space time continuum, then you could opt for something less powerful and more versatile, such as the MacBook Air. More cost effective too.
We’ve left this option out of the table below, since it largely comes down to personal preference, the type of work involved, whether a device needs to be portable - or not - and budget.
What about for games?
For more intense and involved games, that need the most amount of computing power possible, the 15-inch MacBook Pro (with Touch Bar/ID) is the best option. Although more expensive, it comes equipped with an AMD Radeon Pro 560 graphics card with 4GB VRAM, making it more powerful than some Mac desktops and so-called “dedicated” gaming computers.
If you don't play games that are too intense, or have a lower budget, then the Intel HD Graphics 640 card in the 13-inch MacBook Air is the next best option.

What Is a Website Backup and Why You Need One Most businesses now have a website and in order for that website to be live it must be hosted on a server. The IP address of the server combined with your business URL is what delivers the stuff you've been looking for. It might sound complex, but it is simple fit the people who set it up, configure or maintain it! What could go wrong? The server where your website files sit, whether that be 'in the cloud' or in a freelancers spare bedroom, is a physical piece of hardware, and that makes it vulnerable to failure. This failure could be down to a number of things: Security breach Everyone that has heard the word 'website' has also heard the word 'hacked'. Hacking is a major issue that you have to face. There are many 'types' of hack, from a brute force attack - which is an automated 'bot' guessing thousands of passwords a minute - to more sophisticated breaches. For example those that get into the root files through something like a plugin, and install malware on the website itself. Whatever the hack is, they cost a lot of time and money, not to mention the loss of credibility with customers. Doing all you can to minimise the chances of a hack occurring, or reducing the impact when it does, is only a good thing. Accidental deletion To clarify, the site files and the database sit on the server and power the whole website. You won't (or shouldn't) ever need to concern yourself with these, only your web developer or hosting company will ever touch them. It is possible, because humans are involved that there may possibly human error and someone deletes your site off the server. Think about that - someone just simply deletes your whole, entire, website with a couple of errant clicks. A reputable company hosting your site with really good infrastructure, will take a copy of the entire server every night and transfer that to another completely separate server. However if it is a small company or a friend hosting your site, it is highly likely you now have no site at all and no way of retrieving it. Malicious deletion One thing that is less common, but something to consider is malicious deletion. You may have a disgruntle employee with access to the content management system (CMS), the facility that allows you to make all the content updates. They may not even work for you anymore, but if their access credentials haven't been changed, they can log in and cause all kinds of damage. While they might not be able to delete the core site files (the actual site architecture), they would be able to delete all the content that is on the site, or perhaps worse, write all manner of 'inappropriate things'. With content deletion you would notice, with new content slipped in, you may not. If they have access to the server and the site files, you may have an even bigger problem on your hands. Server Failure A server is a piece of physical hardware, and therefore it can break, no different from your laptop or your phone. If the site isn't backed up, then the inability to get the server working will mean that your website cannot be restored. How can I avoid these things happening? Ensure you have a good policy in place that allows you to monitor who has access to what, and as soon as an employee ceases to work with you, or there are employee relationship issues you can restrict, or remove access to avoid any issues. There is a step that you can take however which means that you're covered for every eventuality, and that is having a robust backup schedule in place. So how do you get this? 01 - Find out who hosts your site and their backup regime. What is the disaster recovery plan? Just in case the worst happens 02 - Ask if you can get a physical copy of your website site files and database sent over to you as a zip file, so if the absolute worst happens, and your site is completely deleted, you have a copy of your site on your hard drive 03 - If a backup schedule is available, ask what it is and establish whether it is enough. For instance if the site is backed up every three months but you add and amend content three times a week, you stand to lose a fair bit of content. Ideally you want it backed up every night 04 - Make sure that you check your site regularly for any issues and that backups from longer periods are saved. If your site is backed up every night and you have been hacked, each new backup will overwrite the old one - effectively a bad copy replacing your existing good copy. Unless you establish you've been hacked immediately, your restore copy (from the night before) may not be the clean version. This is why you need a series of backups taken so you can go back to various points in time with a 'clean copy'. 05 - When you write content for your website, make sure it is saved elsewhere as opposed to just being added to the website directly. That way if the worst happens and your content is wiped, you still have a copy of it to paste back in the CMS - for example as I write this blog, I'm writing it and saving it as a Word document so I can retrieve it if needed in the future. 06 - Make sure you keep your website and plugins up to date, and ensure you have as few people as possible with access to the server and the CMS, and those that do have really solid passwords so there is less chance of a security breach.
