was the ending of GO2.....frustrating?
ok, so. i just finished watching gomens with my mom and she commented on how she was feeling a bit frustrated that gabriel and beelzebub got to be together after ONE EPISODE of flashbacks while aziracrow did not. she said that took away part of the magic for her because their situation was no longer "exclusive". and that got me thinking...
yes, i love gab and beelz, they're super cute and all. but. it's true, isn`t it? it is frustrating.
azira and crowley have spent 6000 years living in fear of their head offices finding out they even knew each other. while in just a few meetings gabriel and beelzebub not only got to know each other but FALL IN LOVE!! AND THINK OF RUNNING AWAY TOGETHER!!!
it IS frustrating!!!! and that's the whole point!!!!
unlike aziracrow, gab and beelz have basically NOTHING holding them back. gabriel is The Freaking Supreme Archangel and beelz is the PRINCE of hell. who's gonna stop them? God? Satan? they surely got better things to worry about.
but that's different for aziracrow. they're not the ones in charge. they do not make the rules. they can, and will be, be punished.
and that leaves me thinking about how important this perspective is when analyzing their respective choices in the ending.
crowley looks at gab/beelz and thinks: "if they can. we can." if they, some of the most important beings in charge of heaven and hell, are free to just run away and be with each other, why couldn't he and aziraphale? the system is already broken, let's run away from it.
while what aziraphale thinks is: "if we were like them. we could do that too." if THEY were in the same privileged position as gab/beelz, they would be free to make their own choices without being afraid of any possible punishments. the system is flawed, so let's fix it.
so, when the metatron comes in with a MIRACULOUS offer, that the two of them could occupy the place of power that was once gabriel's and have the status necessary in order to be together without fearing for their existences, of course, he'll take it.
plus, they'd be working in heaven, which is the only option for aziraphale when it comes to "sides" ("it's the side of light. of truth. of good.") he clearly still hasn't gotten over it.
aziraphale thinks that the only way they can be together is by being the ones making the rules. if they're in charge, no one can punish them. (plus, they'd be "doing good" and blablabla)
the thing is, this doesn't work for crowley because he wants to live with aziraphale in the world. (that's what they toasted for, wasn't it? why would he want anything else?!) both of them already know, and have known for a while, that they care for each other, that they trust each other, that they need each other. those aren't news. what aziraphale does not understand (or chooses to not acknowledge) is how that, as it is, is not enough for crowley anymore.
that demon has spent so much time on earth he's "gone native". he drinks. he rides a car. he TALKS TO HIS PLANTS (is there anything more human than that???!)
he cries because he thinks his only friend is dead.
if he chose to go to heaven with aziraphale, they'd be in a higher plane of existence. no bookshop, no wine, no carnal pleasures. so what's even the point??? (plus they'd keep being a part of a screwed up system neither of them really agree with anyway.) and now they have gab/beelz as an excuse to actually be with one another, no one would stop them.
the kiss is his way of trying to show aziraphale what they WON'T have if they go to heaven. how it is not worth it. "you can't leave this bookshop." you can't leave me. why would he want to do that, anyway? when it's so clear that heaven is as bad as hell in many, many ways. the problem is...that's not as clear for aziraphale as it is for crowley. they want the same thing, but want to get there through opposite ways. because, unlike gab/beelz, who were not affected by millenia of fear and inhibition, they're just doing what they've learned to do best: cancel each other.
so, yes. it feels unfair. because it is. until that point they had never been in a fortunate enough position to truly be together. and now that they finally do, they fail to see the opportunity with the same eyes. but i mean i guess that's what 6.000 years of pining would do to any supernatural being :/ good thing gabriel and beelzebub didn't have to go through that. good for them.
. . . . . . . .
(quick reminder that this is only a personal analysis of the ending of s2 based on my own understanding of the characters and i have no intention of imposing this as "correct" or anything like that :D)
(also sorry for any writing mistakes i might have commited, english is not my first language ehe)
