big post explaining/apologizing for my (eggtwobroes/theyhitthepentagon) behavior under the read more

sorry for maintagging this i just. think its important

i dont really kniw how to word what im thinking so im like. going to type it as im thinking. but i wanted to make a real genuine post explaining my behavior over the past year, because ive been a dick there is no avoiding it!! this post is going to be about how ive acted from june up until now. im mostly going to be explaining the situations and apologizing. if you see this please feel free to share it around, i know it most likely will not reach alot of people because i have like. a loot of people blocked. and alot of people have me blocked. idk please share this ok thank u

back in june 2022 (specifically one year tomorrow, june 16th) i got like. really worked up after i had foundout that most of my adult mutuals (and some people i followed) were drawing hlvrai nsfw! the only post i had made about it (at least from what i remember) is liiike a not Kind post that basically said "hey if u like hlvrai nsfw please block me i thought that was common sense". after i posted this a large hlvrai artist (either by chance or caused by me) posted like "hey if u shit on hlvrai porn ur homophobic! sex is an important part of gay relationships etc etc"

this caused a Massive out break of discourse over hlvrai nsfw and me getting alot of adults in my inbox being weird towards me. here i feel its important to mention that:

when i was 12, i was around Ex Friends that posted a lot of porn of media i liked. even though most of them were teenagers and not that much older than me it Greatly Impacted Me and how i act, both related to what i saw and how i was treated

i used twitter from ages 12-15 (recently left) and you know how they handle conflict there. its not good

i dont think either of these excuse how i acted (but they may explain it)

the combined pressure of getting a bunch of adults in my anons being (from my perspective) really weird about this 14 year old kid who doesnt want porn artists to interact, and the unhealed trauma of Being Exposed To Homestuck Porn When I Was 12 (a devastating situation that everyone goes though all the time) i didnt really. handle it in a Good Way. which Means i sent horrible anon hate to people.i dont clearly remember if i made alot of public posts about the situation at the time (beyond answering the anons i was getting) but if i did im very very VERY sorry.

i feel like. alot of how i acted during this time (june-early august, mostly) was extremely Dickish and rude. as much as i justify or explain why i acted the way i did, i was still causing issues and handling the situation in a way that was unhealthy for not just myself but for everyone else around me. for this i really genuinely do apologize as much as i can, to the people ive hurt (melonsharks, xenodogz, many other artists) and to the people who were annoyed by me rehashing 3 year old drama. ever since the situation i have been working towards learning to block people and move on if they make content that makes me feel nauseous.

As for how ive acted in recent months, mostly over characterization, im not going to pretend that im already a new person. because im not! as much as i say im trying to be less of an asshole im just Not. it takes effort that i feel like im not putting in.

for those who just Dont look at my pages often enough, i will occasionally make posts about how hlvrai fans treat or characterize the. characters. and lets behonest these posts are really rude and ive been working on at LEAST being more vague or keeping it in private or like. just Not Posting it. but of course i HAVENT done all of those things! ive been really unvague!

ive posted direct screenshots of authors writing (someone younger than me, ive recently learned) to shit on it for being mischaracterized. i should Not have done that. at the very least i should have kept my thoughts to myself, not even shared with my friends.

after reading how other authors and artists have felt about the things ive said, and looking at the way ive come to think of other artists or authors in the community, ive realized that even though i thought i was targetting mischaracterization and poor treatment of the characters, i was harming and discouraging artists and authors who are still learning and growing as creators.

for this, im VERY very sorry to all of the artists and writers ive hurt or discouraged with my posts. i want to personally apologize to joyflameball, for publicly posting about and hating on your writing and the discouragement i caused as a result. i should have never put mischaracterization over your own feelings, and i definitely should not have put your work on blast, especially because we are (i think) around the same age. i will be trying as best as i can to deconstruct the way ive come to think of other creators in this community and support other creators as best i can.

i dont expect to be forgiven for the way ive acted, since alot of this is VERY very recent and so far i dont think ive shown any signs of improvement. i am writing this post now because i want you all to know that i will be trying my hardest to become a better person, change the way i think of other people, and change the way i act in public. i dont think my actions can be excused, as much as i try my best to explain them from my perspective. ive undeniably hurt many people. if i havent addressed something important, or if you have any questions/things to say, please feel free to send me an ask or dm me at wretched yaoi lich#9564 on discord. im most likely going to be queueing this post alot so my followers see it. thank u for ur time

A ship I have with said character: I mean- him and Gordon’s flawed misunderstanding-riddled thing they’ve got going on is a given. Though him and Forzen definitely used to have something going on (bitter “no homo” exes I bet)

A BROTP I have with said character: Him and Tommy are BESTIES, they confide in eachother and benry talks about Gordon while kicking his feet and Tommy nods along (he gets to infodump about beyblades next)

A NOTP I have with said character: idk, I don’t actually personally think he and Tommy work super well as a couple? But I’m not gonna police you for shipping it

A random headcanon: He has a REAL hard time reading emotions in people, he thinks everything is for the laughs until someone is VERY obviously upset, which confuses him.

General Opinion over said character: I love him, hes a really fun but complicated deuterantagonst that I feel people misinterpret A LOT, but he really is a super cool guy I like to explore character wise. 10/10 funny fella.

BENNY OBERWINCH Sexuality Headcanon: Hes bisexual aromantic he talks about “banging hot chicks” a lot but he’s not afraid to kiss the homies goodnight. Though he’s never wanted to be in a committed relationship, he values friendship above literally all else in his life.

Gender Headcanon: He’s transmasc as fuckkk he/they swag imagine your gender being affirmed because of the apocalypse.

A ship I have with said character: N/A

A BROTP I have with said character: Lanks and Cyclops of course, they care about eachother so much bros for life, even with their issues. But I also feel like he and Five get along really really well.

A NOTP I have with said character: Five, the whole game was explicitly about how he didn’t want to bang her, and the only ending where he lives is based on their friendship. It feels counterproductive to ship em.

A random headcanon: He LOVES rats, he’s had like five pet rats over the years and lets them climb all over him. His little sidekicks. Also he styles his hair with glue, it’s rock hard if you touched it (yet still expressive? Who knows it’s an enigma)

Specifically the Juno Steel series

I'm going to explain this as best I can </3, unfortunately I can't word my thoughts very well

Juno would be Gordon; main character, some Guy that is experiencing The Horrors and is also kinda angry, gay man with some gender, lost a body part, has a gun that he can use pretty well, used to work for the government but hates it now lmao

Nureyev would probably be Benrey? They're the love interests, VERY FRUITY!!, shady lil guys, kind of morally gray, betrayal... (for some symbolism the skeleton could be Slip Jackson??? Idk, metaphors or smth)

Buddy and Vespa are the Coomer and Bubby relationship <3. Its a little hard to determine which one they correlate to though,, unfortunately, although Vespa and Coomer are green, I think Ive landed on Buddy as Coomer; they care a little more about others than they let on, are very transgender and buff, have double vowels in their name, etc. (It would've been so fun to have Buddy as Bubby though, maybe I'll change my mind later)

Vespa and Bubby continuously threaten the main character with bodily harm and are very competent, chaotic <3

RITA IS TOMMY I WILL NOT CHANGE MY MIND,, EVERYBODY THINKS THEYRE YOUNGER THAN THEY ARE, VERY COMPETENT AND KNOWLEDGEABLE BUT FREQUENTLY UNDERESTIMATED, SILLY GOOFY VIBES,, NEED I SAY MORE

Jet might be Forzen? I really want to include him but unfortunately there aren't any more characters in HLVRAI. I might have to go through the actual Half Life lore and see if I can include any established characters from there lol. I don't remember much about Forzen except he's related to fighting, so that's the only similarity I can make to Jet lmao

And finally we have Sasha as G-man. Shady leader of a shady organization that is probably committing war crimes. I don't know what to do for the G-man + Tommy father-son relationship here honestly

[okay, all of what I have written here was originally written as a Discord message, which I realized had become way too long to be coherent with discord formatting, so part of the way through, ai started writing it like the first draft of an essay. So that’s why the tone is odd at the beginning]

I think… idk. I feel like the NCCTs, as well as CPUK, are part of a kind of modern wave of web-fiction that draws a lot from EXTREMELY quick-witted improv characters, and lots of audience interaction. AND, crucially, use of video games to creat basically live theatre, but in a way that actual live theatre can’t possibly do.

The examples that come to mind are CPUK and NCCTs, as well as Half Life VR But The AI Is Self Aware, and probably SaltyDKDan’s Friendlocke? (If anyone has more examples, I’d love to have em, just so i can kinda do more meta on this.)

I wouldn’t call it a medium, bc, of the examples I can think of, all the mediums have been different, but this variation seems crucial to the ‘genre’, because for all the examples I can think of, the storytelling can only be possible with that specific medium.

I think another thing that characterizes the genre is a dynamic between the showrunners and the audience. This kind of fiction always has a defined leader(s) , usually the person streaming, GMing, and/or improv-acting as a character outside themselves in the story, who pretty much has the final say on direction of the story.

It also has a wider audience of people who obvi don’t really know the showrunner(s), and so they have a bit of distance and respect there. The audience is not an audience in the way a movie/play audience or reader of a novel would be, since this audience, due to the story being hosted online, can interact and chat with each other, and influence how they see the story.

Idk. I’m just kind of musing here. I’m realizing, as I explore this idea, that in most of this vein of web-fiction I’ve seen, the viewer interaction is pretty minimal. Everyone can interact with each other and basically act as a Greek Chorus, which influences the fiction because, for instance, in a Twitch stream, the live chat and donation messages show up onscreen. However, there’s still a bit of a line dividing the audience from driving the plot the same way the showrunners are: I think the Greek Chorus comparison works very well here.

However, bring this back to NCCT, this line gets broken, a bit, when NCCT2 begins. We become participants and driving forces in the story in a way we wouldnt as a Twitch chat watching CPUK. Interestlingly, tho, there is still a line drawn between us and the fiction, in the form of the Nelson plot-device. We can discuss and Greek-Chorus the story outside Nelson because of the mechanic of the quotation marks, and when we do participate and drive the plot, we aren’t interacting as separate entities with different motives— we are all just a combined, somewhat chaotic voice, which usually has more impact on the story when we are all unified in our aimss.

[At this point, I decided to cut and paste what I’d written into this post. I might come back and redraft this into something more coherent, because I def want to:

- explore more how NCCT varies from this genre I’ve characterized, and therefore make the way I’ve defined the genre more decriptive of CPUK and HLVRAI and Friendlocke, where the audience is more of a greek chorus than participants in the story. I feel like I tried to stretch my original description of the genre too much to fit the NCCTs, and i think i could fix that.

- Explore what kind of people make up the audience, which is def different from the average audience for movies or books, bc this type of fiction is hosted online, in pretty?~ niche circles, with a lot of queer young people, and i think, also neurodivergent people, in the audience. So there’s some exploration and connections to be done there. ]

decided to write down what i have thought of for my mh hlvrai au so far as well as things that aren't so concrete

okay so concrete things:

Tim and Masky are Gordon because it makes sense to me, Tim is just a dude with DID doing his best to help his ragtag group get through hell, Masky is just doing their absolute best to keep the group(and Tim) safe and is semi-verbal

Brian is Dr. Coomer bc Gordon already seemed to know Coomer before everything(at least that's how i interpret their first interaction) and idk aside from Tommy Gordon is the closest with Coomer and the ending message is from Coomer so like iunno, also idk Hoody stuff and the betrayal fit i think??

okay now for the less concrete things:

i could see Jay as Tommy or Benrey

okay gonna justify Jay as Tommy first bc it's the one i'm leaning more towards but uhhh it's mainly the hat, treatment of their characters by the fandoms, and also some of their behaviors and mannerisms are kinda similar. a lot of people treat Jay and Tommy like they're innocent small children and i'm so tired like no these guys are fucked up freaks(affectionate)! Tommy kills the most people and Jay commits so many crimes. also Jay is Tim's main ally which is paralleled by Tommy being Gordon's closest ally next to Coomer so idk, this will most likely be the one i go with

Jay as Benrey is mostly just again hat thing and the way Gordon and Benrey act as like weird friendemies, like yeah i love Jay n Tim being close, but their relationship is very very rocky due to everything and then the Operator meddling happens and Jay tries to harm Tim, but yeah probably not going with this one, but gamer Jay is very funny to consider

Alex as Benrey or Bubby

okay so Alex is most likely gonna be Benrey but i'll justify my reasoning for both of these choices again starting with Benrey, for Alex as Benrey it's mainly antagonistic role, Benrey ends up as the big bad because of Gordon's built-up animosity towards him, Alex ends up as the main antagonist because of the effects of the Operator and thinking that murder is the only way to stop it, also Alex is a film major in 2006 he'd def say shit like epic though i don't know if he'd be a gamer

Alex as Bubby is mainly just similar personalities kinda, Alex becomes a lot more irritable due to the Operator and i could see post-Operator Alex saying some of the shit Bubby says lmao, again Alex is most likely gonna be Benrey but idk i could see this for him as well

Jessica could be Bubby, okay okay i don't have too much justification for this one but i do think Jess is kinda blunt, and she deserves to be mean go girlboss go

uhhh like background characters that aren't super concrete teehee:

Sarah as G-man but only if Jay is Tommy, this is mainly just because i like the idea of Jay and Sarah being cousins, also Sarah is so snarky during the one time she shows up, and she deserves to be an intimidating and snarky person i love her sm

Amy as Darnold, i love Amy being cool potions woman Amy ilysm you get to be the best character<3<3<3<3

Okay, but what if SB had included more interactions between the animatronics? Like, imagine you overhearing them discussing how to catch Gregory, or - if there are multiple in one area - every now and then you hear them go, "Have you found him yet?" "Not yet, but he's gotta be here!" You could even take it a step further and have them check in with Vanessa sometimes (ala that one cut line where she asks them all to report in). If you're inside Freddy and walk past one of them, there's a chance they'll say hi and stuff. Imagine these random encounter events you can stumble across, where you see two of them just talking and being buds. Overall, I think it would help flesh the Glamrocks, and their relationships/dynamics with each other, out a bit more.

Then on the flip side... there's the POTENTIAL FOR ANGST AND DRAMA! Imagine seeing and/or hearing their upset/horrified reactions to their friends being taken out one by one, and having their parts stolen.

Okay, now take all that angst and drama... AND APPLY IT TO THEIR INTERACTIONS WITH FREDDY AND HOW IT WOULD CHANGE AS THE GAME GOES ON!! At first they assume he's also helping them hunt down Gregory, but as the game goes on, they begin to grow suspicious... At one point you overhear them going back and forth abt whether Freddy is hiding something, with at least one of them (maybe Chica? Idk) trying to defend him.

The doubt and suspicion towards Freddy continues to grow until one of them confronts him directly (Monty perhaps? Again idk??) They tell Freddy they know he's helping Gregory somehow, and demands he tell them where he's hiding him. Freddy of course denies all of this, but it's clear the other isn't convinced, and maybe even feeling a little betrayed and angry he's seemingly choosing some random kid over his own friends (bonus points if Gregory was hiding in Freddy's stomach during this). While Freddy doesn't like having to lie to his friends, he knows there's something wrong with them, and refuses to let them hurt Gregory.

Afterward, there would be a lot more tension between Freddy and the band, since by now they're almost certain he's helping Gregory, but they don't have any solid proof. It's only when Gregory starts taking them out, and upgrading Freddy with their parts, that they finally turn against him and become openly hostile. Idk how that would work gameplay wise, buuuut yea. Anyway, my point is having more chances see the Glamrocks being friends, how the virus would affect that, and all the drama that could bring, would've been nice.

How’d you find out about HLVRAI? > so i definitely saw it all over my dash when it first came out, but i didn't know anything about haIf life so i just kinda ignored it, i didn't really think abt it at all bc i was like 'oh this is hl related and ive never played that, so' but at some point my brother watched it on the suggestion of a pal (he knew more about hl than i did, but also not v much) and then made me watch it bc he thought i'd like it. then we watched it two more times afterwards w different sibs and during the third watch i really felt the fixation Activate in my brain LOL

Who’s your favorite character and why? > a hard question... i love them all v much. the first place is like a threeway tie between gordon tommy and coomer that kinda changes around - ultimately it's probably gordon, but tommy and coomer are so close behind him that it's hard to really say lol though coomer was my fav during the first watch, and tommy was my fav during the next two!

Favorite thing about him: God idk. I love how simultaneously chaotic and chill he is

Least favorite thing about him: There were a few points that I got a bit annoyed with his antagonizing Gordon during their journey— I mean it’s funny and all and most of it is HILARIOUS, but there were a few moments where he was just keeping anything from progressing and it was irritating. Only a few though

Random headcanon: Benrey has hair underneath his helmet but it’s. Not really hair? It’s the same color as the shadow on his face (which just Exists, it isn’t from the helmet) and it’s an indescribable texture when touched. (Aka Scramble likes a lot of these Benrey designs)

Unpopular opinion: I feel like Benrey isn’t one to get super flustered in the love sense— if he was faced with a situation involving showing affection he’d just go for it. Because why not? Might be another way to fuck with Gordon a little bit

(My favorite thing relating to this is this comic by Mushramoo, in which Benrey gets more embarrassed by the fact that he Doesn’t Know what Handholding Is rather than the fact that it’s for showing affection. It seems so much more in character to me!!!)

Freemod Context! (Long!!)

This is Gordon Freemod! He’s my own little AU Gordon, and I love him!

I made him based around the way I play Garry’s Mod

Cause, in Gmod, my player model is Gordon, and I literally cannot change it because whenever I go to change my model he just

To get some characterization down, Freemod can go from Excited Sweet Voice at Everything to This Man is in God Mode and He is Staring You Down as You Attack Him

ANYWAYS something else about Freemod, he likes starting all out fights between people, but he’s very polite too so like

Someone says hi to him and he gives this big ol smile, next thing you know, he’s spawning headcrabs that could wipe out an army

He also has no idea what to do with bodies like sometimes he just Sweet Voice cocoons them, and other times he just beats them rapidly if it was a combine or something

Another thing! He doesn’t like making eye contact 100% of the time! If he gets too excited as well, he’ll despawn whatever was making him excited until he calms down.

He’s also really fast when it comes to no-clipping.

He’ll shoot up into the air and fling himself from place to place, just absolutely soaring and loving that feeling of flying through the air

He definitely makes Catboy Calhoun jokes but like

He’s also really nervous around Calhoun sometimes like he’s constantly checking in on them after making them fight a ton of headcrabs.

He doesn’t really like using the majority of the guns. He just typically uses the quieter/less frantic weapons like the magnum or the crossbow.

He’s very giggly and smiley when it comes to hearing other characters talk. But he also can be very mean and cutting to the people he doesn’t like. Especially combine.

Freemod really likes Houndeyes.

He spawned in a group of 8 and just watched them for a while, and then he spawns a MP Combine. It proceeds to stun stick every one of them. And they all die in one hit. They don’t even fight back.

What Freemod does next is basically the equivalent of “die a very painful death” and just beats the shit out of them while alive and dead.

They have to erase everything because they can’t stand the sight of the bodies of Houndeyes.

Another thing I decided to do with him, I gave him a little plot. A hint of his own character rather than just being me but an AU Gordon.

If someone let him into Black Mesa let’s just say that the Resonance Cascade would’ve been way sooner and way more intense.

Another thing with Freemod, I’m not exactly sure how he’d react to... say, the HLVRAI characters showing up in gm_construct one day, idk Benrey takes the gang on a trip to there out of nowhere and they find Freemod just vibing by himself, flying through the air on a capture point from TF2. I don’t know if he’d:

A: Summon a bunch of things to attack the HLVRAI crew for the fun of it

B: Immediately try to befriend all of them desperately

C: Possess a creature and disregard them

D: All of the above

Cause with all this “He’s trapped/alone” sorta thing, I don’t know if I’m making him into a villain or am I just making him very touch starved and sad?

Cause like, earlier I did say that if he was let out of gm_construct, the resonance cascade would’ve been sooner and more intense

Basically what I was thinking is that he doesn’t really limit how crazy his thoughts experiments can be that often, so like, he spawns a bunch of things all at once to see what would happen.

But he’s not like that all the time, like I said, he’s also very polite, he’s just got a thin coating of God Mode on and he’s very lonely.

I was trying to figure out the thing with Freemod’s voice actually. I’m trying to think what they’d be like on the Gordon Scale.™️

I’d say he’s able to speak, but he doesn’t do it often. Because typically he’s only around NPCs and they can’t respond to him the way he wants, so why actually talk to them?

But he definitely talks to enemies as sort of a “I am the last thing you’ll ever hear” kind of thing.

But if he were to meet a different Gordon or someone with sentience he can talk to, he’d speak. Totally.

He talks to some of the alien/animal NPCs, cause like!!! Come on!!! That Houndeye over there needs to know that he’s a good boy!!!

So, maybe when Freemod is upset or something, he spawns the biggest thing he can possibly think of and posses it, and goes on an absolute rampage until he’s better

He just has moments where he’s too out of his head and he needs to just escape.

Something he’s been doing recently is possessing a Stukabat and flying up on top of a roof of a really high building and just. Viewing everything.

Ooh, another thing,

He doesn’t like that dark room at all. In gm_construct? He will not go in there for more than a minute. That place scares him so much. Not even the fact that it’s dark, he just hates that he can’t see anything and while he knows he’s alone in the world he’s in, and he controls what can exist there or not, but, he just refuses to go there, even with a flashlight.

PLEASE talk more abt yr hlvrai design choices i would love 2 see tht!!! :]

OK ill explain a bit! im dozing off rn so pls understand that i dont know how to write or type.

ill probably do a little more indepth so i base a lot of my character designs on how the voice sounds. like what would this character look like based off how they sound, sounds can have shapes so voices can have shapes. little uh motifs i guess? in voice? also, more obvious, design based off personality and also (very loosely) based off the models.

i came up with the designs half way through watching act two. i think only the first ep of act 3 was out at the time so it was EARLY days there wasnt even funny halve live fandom yet rlly. but YEAH so i got to make designs without too much influence from others which is awesome

gordon is comedic straight man normal guy (even tho hes Not normal) hes very generic, kinda scruffy. hes the Main Character and i wanted him to ve very Main Character. hes built like a rectangle, but softer edges. kinda goes along w his voice honestly. just a dude youd see in the line at starbucks or smthn. cartoony glasses w weird dot eyes trope thnak YOU... gordon normal voice syndrome m gettin NOTHIN from this guy he also has a mullet u just cant see it w the ponytail

benrey looks human and is pretty human. bc my art style is the way it is. hes built like a squircle, very wide and imposing but not in a threatening way, in an agitating way. he looks pliable and soft, like playdoh. he doesnt emote, and when he does the expression is forced and awkward. hes an alien after all, and is kinda still getting used to the whole Human Body Thing. benreys voice sounds round!

(gordon and benrey dont have contrasting designs but they have a lot of similarities in both shape and build. bc i dont see them as direct opposites and see them more similar if anything. they dont contrast since Everyone antagonizes gordon one way or another.)

bubby is the definition of Prickly Old Bastard, literally and figuratively. not approachable but generally nonthreatening (somewhat). hes on Edge, easily agitated and uptight, thats why hes always wearing a turtleneck or his shirt collar goes up to his head almost lookin uncomfortably tight. wanted him to contrast coomer..! a lot of the lil details of his design face upwards and inwards. bubbys voice sounds angular!

coomer is round and soft, hes fat bc hes a boxer and also bc it makes him look sweet and approachable, even though hes a very dangerous always-ticking timebomb. i wanted him to look visibly strong but not anime-buff, and also wanted him to contrast bubbys design in almost every way, which is why he changed so drastically compared to my first hlvai art. a lot of the lil details of his design face downwards and inwards. coomers voice sounds round!

(note how coomer and bubby have contrasting character designs but still have similar aspects to them. i wanted them to have a statler/waldorf or bunsen/beaker situation,where theyre obviously a duo. theyre both da shortest in the science team...same height)

tommy is tall and has been since my first piece of hlvai fanart. i just LOVE softer almost unassuming characters standing out like a sore thumb and that MAINLY being bc theyre tall. his voice sounds very tall too, i wish i could explain how or why. baaulp said tommy was a cross between the secretary in twin peaks and pee wee herman and i ran with that. awkward beanpole that wears the same outfit everyday. loose spaghetti noodl. wobbly nd fluid never stiff!!

darnold is my newest design concept and i wanted him to be soda can shaped!!! thats honestly it, he was the easiest one to get. i had his design in mind since i watched the act 4 vod before the episodes were actually released. hes similar to gordon where i wanted to give him this Normal Guy Dad Look. his designs a lot less complex since i used the soda can shape concept AND jusr how his voice sounds.....

anyway when wayne talked abt my designs on stream i Died and also i feel like thats when they were adopted by a lot of the fandom and slowly started mutating into what the general fanon designs are now. except for coomer and darnold who im Sure i based off other folks' designs! same w some of benrey im sure. idk early hlvai fandom days r blurry bc my brain doesnt WORK

Submitting instead of asking because I cannot express any idea in less than like 500 words lol

So I had been following WayneRadioTV for a while but had only ever seen one of his streams (chimps for charity) and nothing else.. Then one day I get yet another notification he's streaming and on a whim I go, "Sure, let's see what this dude is doing." And that turned out to be the very first hlvrai stream! [Insert meme of spongebob pointing at himself on TV, but it's me pointing at myself in the chat of the HLVRAI streams]  Having no knowledge of any of his similar previous streams or about any of his friends made it an incredibly weird/hilarious/surreal/surprising experience. I think part of the reason I got so into it was because of how blindsided I was by it.

Ironic or serious?

I was absolutely non-ironically hooked by the end of the first stream.

Twitch or Youtube?

Made sure to catch every stream from then on, and then watched the youtube videos when they came out as well. I tuned into the commentary too.

How passionate?

I was extremely obsessed with it for... I dunno, a few months, at least. I'm very passionate in general about the way long-form improv can coalesce into a unique and interesting story, and HLVRAI is no different. It's still my main fandom (or tied for it, at least?) but the super-fun, super-obsessed days are behind me.

Make/engage in fan content?

I drew some and wrote bits and pieces of fic here and there, but I didn't publish anything outside of my small discord until something like a year after the first stream. It's been... a steady but very slow output from me, as is usually the case with any fandom I'm in. I looked at a lot of art and fic for a good few months in the beginning, but mostly stopped eventually because the fandom was/is so horrendous that it wasn't worth putting up with it for the content. :') (Now 95% of the hlvrai content i consume is made by people in my private little discord)

Following content creators?

I followed Wayne on Twitch already, as I mentioned. I didn't know of anyone else in the crew beforehand (although their meme presence was certainly felt far and wide). I followed Gir, Holly, Baaulp, Scorpy, and Log afterward for quite a while, but I don't follow any of them anymore, including Wayne. I still follow Wayne on Tumblr though.

Favorite characters/moments?

My favorite character was always Tommy. Second favorite is probably Bubby. I really love Darnold but I don't think about him much since he has so little screentime. I actually found Benry to be a little annoying and tedious at first. He was definitely the character I was the least interested in. When I saw the emerging popularity of Benry/Gordon, I knew it was only a matter of time before I was Mere-Exposure-Effect'ed into liking him... And I was right, haha. I have to admit I love that sort of ship dynamic.

As for moments.. Gah, There are so many I love that just aren't on the top of my head right now. >_< Benry's monologue at the end is a classic, of course. Also the part with Coomer quietly saying, "None of this is real, is it?" And I love the parts where they're just sitting in a circle and talking.

One of the big reasons I looked forward to the streams was definitely because I wanted to see what would happen with the characters / I just wanted to see more of them in general.

Know anyone IRL?

I introduced my IRL friend to it, and she thought it was hilarious, but she didn't get into it in a fandom sense. Everything else has been online. (And mostly in small private discords.)

Other Stuff

Idk if any of the following would be relevant to the paper at all, but I don't feel like I've completely told My HLVRAI Story without it.

1) I got suuuper into half life through hlvrai. I had actually already played the HL series before, years ago, and it didn't really leave much of an effect on me. But for some reason I LOVE it now. Maybe it's because hlvrai made me think more deeply about the HL universe?

2) Cannot possibly stress enough how negative my experience of the fandom was. At this point I don't actually like seeing most content or even talk of HLVRAI from people I don't already know, because I have this pavlovian response of getting upset. I'm honestly very surprised I'm still into hlvrai with how thoroughly and irreversibly I've managed to connect it to bad experiences in my mind. -_- (That's kind of just what fandom in general is like these days, though... At least in my experience.)

Well... This ended up being way longer than I thought it was going to be, and that's saying something. No hard feelings if you don't wanna post it because of that, or because of the negative bits. ^^;;

its just a nickname. theres alternate versions of the same guy so ppl just said fuck it and gave em nicknames to help differentiate them. they also have pretty different stories and personalities, too.

feetman is the gordon freeman from half-life VR but the AI is self aware (HLVRAI for short). he got the nickname “feetman” in the series. he’s usually depicted as a bigger guy with longer hair and a missing/robot right arm or a huge scar on said arm.

freemind is the gordon freeman from freeman’s mind, which is a fanon nickname. the eyepatch is also fanon. episode 27 is not fanon.

and then we just call canon half-life gordon freeman just. “freeman”. he’s the OG and also the only canon gordon freeman. hes the one using sign language in most depictions of him, cus yknow. silent protag uses sign language. you love to see it.

the others are derived from like, different machinima series of half life. like AUs but more...... official. idk why theyre more official, they just are.

Alright now that its officially Forzen Friday let's try this post again since it didn't show up in the tags last time-

I'M FINALLY MAKING A FORZEN HC DUMP (kinda AU-ish territory but not really idk exactly) AND NONE OF YOU CAN STOP ME

There are also a few other hcs sprinkled in here related to other characters (like Darnold and Sunkist for example) but Forzen is the main focus!! Despite him being a minor character I latched onto him and fleshed him out sm yall have no idea

Everything under the cut bc this shit is gonna be LONG (and there's also some more doodles that take up a bit of space!)

Also uhh if people like this I might take one for another hlvrai character later bc I have a lot to say about everyone!!

Forzen moved from France to the US with his parents when he was around 12 or 13 (yes, I'm aware that Scorpy and Holly are French Canadian and not France French but that doesn't mean Forzen can't be, I'm just being sure to say this now before someone says something to me about it)

He wanted to go to college and eventually become a game dev, but he didn't have the funds or the support for it (his family thought anything to do with games would amount to a career that would go nowhere).

Because of this, he instead was recruited in the US military. He originally had no intent to join, but after constantly being harrassed recommended to join and being entertained with the concept of being able to afford and pay for college, he caved (hence him telling the science team that his only goal is "to graduate").

He doesn't like his job very much if that wasn't clear.

And neither do most others that have the same job like him.

He was put on a "team" of his own, Team Nice, which was likely arranged as a guaranteed way to get Forzen in the way of danger, and with no one else fighting beside him, he would be easily dealt with- no one would have to worry about him bothering them again. However, he somehow manages to survive all of this, of course. Somehow. He likely knows the real reason he was assigned his own team (if you can even call it that), but refuses to fully acknowledge it for his own sanity, and instead pretends that he's some big, important person on a team that ranks so highly, he's the only one qualified to be in it. (I apologize ahead of time for giving one of the most shitposty and throwaway characters in hlvrai this much depth and angst, there was just potential there leave me alone)

Fast forward to the actual events of hlvrai though. This hc is a little outlandish but I really like the concept!!! So, at one point, Forzen is killed, presumably by some kind of creature that was out and about due to the RenCas. The science team + Benrey stumble across him (act 2 part 2 at around 13 min in for anyone curious), and Benrey decides to use the healing beam Sweet Voice on him. While Benrey and Forzen may not be on good terms anymore, Benrey still very begrudgingly cares about him and didn't want to see him get injured or die. Forzen wakes up a minute or so after the science team exits the room, assuming that he just passed out, nothing more, and goes along with things as normal.

He meets Darnold a while after his first (concious) run in with the science team. Darnold has recently dealt with the science team and helped them out, but is pretty bummed that he couldn't travel with them, as everything was far too scary and dangerous for him. Forzen, wanting to escape Black Mesa and the military altogether, ends up making a deal with him that he'll handle all the dangerous stuff if Darnold can show him a way out.

Now, meeting Darnold is a very new experience for him, since Darnold actually enjoys his company, and actually wants to befriend him! At first, Forzen openly tries to act as if Darnold is a huge deal to put up with- he goes along with with the whole "if you're escaping outta this hellhole with me, you better keep up" kinda deal (despite the fact that he kinda NEEDS Darnold to escape and show him the way out). His walls are still very much so raised, and he doesn't let his guard down as he's not used to others caring about him and his safety. But as time passes, he begins to realize that maybe Darnold DOES want to be his friend, and the tough guy act becomes less apparent.

To preface this next one- Sunkist sensed that something was up (he has a next-level sense of danger when it comes to Tommy's safety) and got to BM as fast as he could, searching every hallway for his boy. This is when Forzen finds him!! He figures that taking Sunkist as a hostage would be enough to get extra info out of the team that's been practically plaguing him lately.

Darnold doesn't know about Forzen's plans to take Sunkist hostage, so is completely fine with traveling alongside him. At one point though, Forzen and Darnold get separated (Forzen occupies him, makes sure hes safe and then runs off to deal with Sunkist). Darnold immediately uses his surroundings to model a quick little teleporter device to get Forzen back, because, you know, the man's a genius. Idc if its logical or not just go with it shhh I've gotta fill in the plotholes with something. That's why Forzen disappears all of a sudden after he's cornered by the science team. He just pops back in front of Darnold suddenly, all confused and loopy from the whole teleportation thing.

As things begin to wind down, Darnold and Forzen make it out of BM and start making a break for it, no idea how they'll get away from BM and to safety somewhere- they didnt really think things through.

Fortunately (or unfortunately for Forzen really), however, G-man picks both of them up. He means to drop Darnold off at Tommy's party, as he observed that Darnold helped his son to safety and is grateful for it. Forzen, though, he intends to "deal with" for messing things up so badly with Tommy, Sunkist, and all of Tommy's friends. This is where Darnold finds out about everything Forzen did and frankly gets really pissed with him since he thought he only had good intentions??? Luckily though, Darnold convinces G-man to give him a second chance, let him go to Tommy's party and apologize, and try things again. G-man, for some reasons agrees- probably bc hes in a good mood, as it IS his son's birthday.

The party is pretty uncomfortable to say the least. Tommy's extremely hesitant to talk to Forzen, but he does, and they end up on neutral terms by the end of it. Uneasy, but neutral. Tommy and Darnold hit it off though, and Tommy opens the invitation to Darnold that he can visit his place anytime now that everything at BM is over with.

As everyone's getting ready to leave, Forzen mentions to Darnold that he doesn't have a place to stay, seeing as the entire military was kinda. Yknow. Wiped out. Obviously wouldn't wanna go back to check anyways. And he has no interest in going home to his parents. So Darnold agrees to let him stay with him since they've become good pals over the course of everything.

Over time, Darnold visits Tommy more and more often. He starts bringing Forzen along, which Tommy is iffy of at first, but their dynamic starts to change and become more comfortable once Tommy sees that Forzen isnt interested in being enemies anymore.

Sunkist and Forzen still don't get along for a very long time. Or, well- it's moreso that Sunkist is very wary about Forzen, despite him not doing anything to harm either Sunkist or Tommy.

Oh yeah and almost forgot to mention one of my favorite hcs (that I PROMISE you started out as a joke but then I got attached) is Sunkist can talk!! So his first spoken interaction with Forzen after Forzen comes over to visit for the first time is literally just him being all threatening and laying down the ground rules bc he doesn't want Forzen to hurt Tommy at all in any way. And of course Forzen about has a heart attack bc "HUH??????? THERE'S A DOG THAT IS SPEAKING HUMAN WORDS TO ME"

UHH I HAVE MORE (I've written out so much shit about dynamics and what I'd think would happen even after all of this) BUT I DON'T WANT THIS TO BE TOO LONG like it already is SO I SUPPOSE I'LL LEAVE IT AT THAT FOR NOW!!!! I hope this isn't too ooc either, I just have Emotions about this series and write too much so why not share it yknow
