Joker's motivations in Joker War

Now idk if I was the only one initially confused by wtf Joker's actual intentions were in Joker War. Maybe I'm just a bit schewpid and everyone else got it but regardless here's my attempt to piece together what's going on in his weird little mind.

Imho, the first lines we get about Joker's underlying intentions are here:

It's extremely important that he was aware of Bruce's intentions to redesign the city. That was definitely the catalyst for the whole thing.

Speaking of Bruce's plans to redesign the city:

He mentions multiple times that his goal is to build a city that doesn't need a Batman.

Regardless of whether he actually mentioned something like this at a press conference or something, I'm sure Joker would be able to pick up on it anyway.

And it's very well-established that Joker needs Batman. The Best Man arc has this whole beautiful monologue about it:

Joker NEEDS Batman. A city without Batman is a city with no place for Joker.

The whole Best Man arc takes during the same year (year 17) as Joker War (prior to it, obviously).

The Batcat engagement took place in year 16. (In which Batman also had Joker locked up in his basement. And he deliberately tracked down amnesiac!Joker and made him Normal Joker again so he could get information. Yowza! Not cool, Bats.)

Additionally, the events of Endgame took place on year 15 and Death of the Family in year 14.

Joker reveals more of his motivations in the final fight scene between him and Batman:

Very interesting that Joker initially chooses to stab Batman in the back. Hmm I wonder if that has any deeper meaning or reveals anything about Joker's own feelings in this situation /sar.

Also very, very, very significant that Joker chooses to battle Batman in that particular suit, after he essentially desecrates it:

So, by now, it's apparent that Joker's direct intention with Joker War was to essentially destroy the possibility of Bruce's vision of Gotham:

He even directly says that all of this was about them.

Hm... I don't think he's just talking about the city, here...

And then we have this:

There's been a recurring theme since Death of the Family, that Bruce isn't being the Batman that Joker wants him to be.

To me, this line feels like "okay, Batman is ruined irreparably, let's just destroy him and start over from scratch."

Then we have this panel. Whew. I think this might be one of the most revealing panels in the entirety of Joker War, largely because of how Joker is depicted in it.

He doesn't look angry, he looks genuinely distraught.

And I didn't notice this until someone else pointed it out but if you zoom in, it definitely looks like he's crying.

I don't think this is just an artistic thing, largely because of this panel from a few issues back:

So those are definitely tears of laughter. But it looks roughly the same. Except based on the context and his expression, I don't think those are tears of laughter in Joker War. At the very least, he's hysterical.

Somewhat of a tangent but it's important to tie everything together: Joker War reminds me very much of DOTF and Endgame in that Joker is depicted (or tries to portray himself) as this terrifying, ruthless, inhuman thing, but if you actually look into his motivations, he's being driven by his emotions, particularly his feelings about Batman, which are almost inarguably the most human part of him.

In DOTF he talks about how Batman isn't being the Batman he wants him to be and yadda yadda, but then in the tie-ins, we have this section, which I think does a beautiful job of explaining his real motivations:

It's jealousy. Jealousy and fear. He's terrified of losing Batman.

And then there's a similar thing in Endgame.

Initially, he says this:

"Haha yeah I'm just bored of you lol."

But then in the final scene we get this:

He's not bored, he's heartbroken. He's genuinely hurt by Batman (in his perception) rejecting him, and he's lashing out in a major way.

I think it's definitely similar in Joker War, except he's not as afraid of losing Batman to the Batfam, more so he's afraid that Bruce's new design for the city will eliminate the need for a Batman, although the Batcat almost-wedding and Bruce's growing family definitely play a role in his motivations.

I think that might be where his whole idea of making Batman start over with nothing came from. Because when Bruce started, he didn't really have anyone except for Alfred, and later Dick.

I think that Joker could tolerate him having a few allies but he can't handle the idea of Batman having an actual family. Both because he doesn't want to share Batman's attention, and because he doesn't have a family, so why does Batman get to have one? Why does Batman get to connect with people when the only person he's truly connected to is Batman? He wants Bats to be as dependent on him as he is on Bats.

So, that's just my Hot Take (read: mediocre interpretation) of Joker War. I wasn't too fond of the storyline until I kinda pieced everything together and it's still not my favorite arc but I definitely like it better than I did initially.

i'm not really good at writing straight angst i feel like it's normally like. angst with catharsis. but i wrote some explorations on grief in the past couple years that i feel like have the angst factor (what i have of you about nhs after nmj dies, and then when your beard fell out about my sweetie pie kageyama tobio in middle school after his grandpa dies)

i have a lot of silly fluffy fics... idk i try to toe the line mostly of like. the joys and sadnesses of human experience but sometimes you just gotta fluff it up. i'll set the table, you can make the fire, which is book verse aziraphale/crowley living in a cottage and being in love, comes to mind....i love that one

i don't think i've ever really gotten hate on a fic? i have been extremely lucky in that regard. especially since my whole ouvre from like 2014 onward is on that damn site and much of it is very cringeworthy.

SO MANY...i think probably my fullmetal alchemist nie brothers au....i try not to post things until they are done and fully edited now, but that one was a whim-based fic that i lost all strength for as soon as i started thinking too hard about kagehina. i also had a fem nielan sci fi au that was vaguely based off beauty and the beast but nmj was like stuck in a ship and she thought she was its computer and that she was a program but she was actually a person....which i never posted any of except snippets on twitter and i think it was just too sprawling for my current skill level...i just was never able to wrangle it. but i am fond of it nonetheless

16. What are your writing strengths?

based on what other people have told me i would say the way i write sibling / family relationships, and while my prose is not always pretty i do think it can be pretty at times ...

i feel like it's often too self-indulgent even if that's what fic is for lol, and i tend to look back on fics and think, i wrote that because i had feelings about it and wanted to say it, but i'm not necessarily sure that This Character would say/do that at this point in time....idk like i fear that when i don't think about it hard enough my characterization can be weak or guided by what eye personally would do vs. what The Character would do. but some of that is because the majority of my fics on ao3 are from years and years ago and i (hopefully) have continued to improve

18. Thoughts of writing dialogue in another language in fics?

i'm picky about it but when it's done well i think it's really fun and builds so much of the world/character. i think when it's bad it's really bad. when i go about it i try to think about like, a) do i know this language myself/do i know someone who does. if the answer is no i try to keep it really minimal. b) how do people who know multiple languages approach speaking those multiple languages naturally in real life. like (IN MY EXPERIENCE) ppl don't tend to switch languages for random words mid-sentence unless those words are like, mom, dad, uncle, aunt, ect...maybe swearing if they're less familiar with one of the languages and don't know slang/swearing in it...but again when it's done well it's really good and i'm not an expert. i just can kinda tell when it feels off when i read it, if that makes sense...(it's the same way i feel about grammar lol. sometimes i can just tell it's a little Off)

probably either fma or soul eater or the sister's grimm book series when i was in middle school. or maybe doctor who? idk i had a lot of fanfic notebooks that i have since destroyed and then regretted destroying

I hope Anna at least fucking makes it as Christie is probably gonna be left out in favour of Eddy again and since they introduced a younger, cutesier and more boring version of Kunimitsu in the form of her daughter I don't think we're ever seeing her again.

I wouldn't mind seeing Katarina return either, Miguel's chest is always nice to look at and I'm DEFINITELY on the Lucky Chloe did nothing wrong camp! I also think that over the years I've grown more fond of Forest than Marshall but unless his dad's liver stops working from all the extra steroids he took I don't see him making it back until the next Tag Tournament

DC Comics/Arkhamverse DR

So my DC dr is actually like a mix of the comics and the Arkhamverse video games... mostly because they're my favorite games and recently I've been playing the newest game in the series which is the Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and I really wanted a DR so... 😭

My abilities as a metahuman manifested very early, so my parents, who are not metahumans, were very surprised when I suddenly started to float things with my mind. I hid my abilities for a majority of my life because of some stigmas surrounding metas, and around 15 years old my parents and I moved along with my brothers to Metropolis for some work related thing for my dad. Since Metropolis has a higher concentration of metahumans, I began to show my abilities more and eventually began to work on them each day until I became very powerful... Around 18 years old I decide I want to become a hero and use my powers for good so I begin seriously training myself for hero work by learning how to fight properly, training my powers, etc. I eventually become allied with the Justice League, joining as the seventh member.

Powers: This is gonna sound dorky but I just scripted I have the same exact powers as Jean Grey from Marvel comics lol. Telekinesis, telepathy, astral powers, empathic abilities... I even scripted a phoenix entity for me to become the "host" of, but a DC equivalent. So yes, I'm kind of OP and a bit of a Mary Sue, but I don't care. 😜 I also have the ability to be reborn anytime I die, same as Jean Grey. This is why it's hard for Brainiac to control me, because I can just die and be reborn outside of his control. ;)

DR Related Stuff

This might be really wordy, so apologies in advance.

Since my DR takes place during the Suicide Squad game, it takes place 5 years after the events of Arkham Knight. I'm in a version of Earth where Brainiac has taken over, but I was not captured and I don't fall under his mind control, as I'm immune/resistant to mind control because of my own advanced telepathic abilities. The only other Justice League member NOT effected by Brainiac is Diana/Wonder Woman, the rest of the League has been taken over by Brainiac. Though it's clear that the other members of the League are still in there and that it's possible to break Brainiac's control.

My DR we'll say is like Earth-13, with the original timeline that the game itself took place in was Earth-1. Basically there's different versions of Brainiac that exists in other timelines and Task Force X has to jump timelines and kill each version of Brainiac, which means they have to either kill or find ways to save the Justice League in each timeline.

In MY DR's timeline, Task Force X has already been through 12 previous timelines and now Earth-13 will be the "final" timeline with Brainiac. In this version of the timeline, the Justice League is able to have the control of Brainiac removed and they're able to become free from his control but this only happens because of my help. (So I'm kind of important to saving the Justice League, otherwise TFX has to kill them again and I don't really want to kill the Justice League soooo....)

So yeah, in my DR we'll be trying to save the Justice League to fully erradicate Brainiac and regain control over Earth-14 before Brainiac and his minions can terraform the planet and take over!

Obviously, I am NOT a member of Task Force X, since... I'm not a criminal. But I do become allied with them, though I don't let Waller put that stupid bomb in my head like she does to TFX because aint no way I'm gonna be controlled by her. 😐 And it would be pointless because she knows I would just be able to die and then be reborn without the device.

Additional Notes

Since this follows more of the Arkhamverse games than the comics, there will be some major timeline discrepancies:

Some characters are deceased just because of Arkhamverse previous games. Some characters are deceased because of when Brainiac took over, and some are missing or unknown of their status. (But will probably show up at some point once I shift there.)

Talia al Ghul: Deceased, died in Arkham City

Raas al Ghul: Deceased, died in Arkham Knight

The Joker: Deceased, died in Arkham City - An alternate reality version of him shows up in the SS game during Season 1 but I will NOT be having him join bc I hate that man. 😒

Aquaman - Idk why he wasn't in the game because he is mentioned during some random chatting between Harley and King Shark, he's just not there and not in the Justice League for whatever reason. But I've scripted he's the 6th member like usual.

The Riddler - I mean obviously he's alive, he's still putting those stupid riddles ALL OVER THE GODDAMN CITY I LITERALLY HATE HIM SO MUCH HE'S SO ANNOYING. Tell me why everyone else gets captured and mind controlled but the RIDDLER EVADES IT? Typical. Anyway he's alive and still annoying.

There's so many more that are alive but I'm not gonna list them all. A lot of heroes are outside Metropolis, defending various cities across the United States from Brainiac's invasion, but the plan in my DR is to wipe out Brainiacs forces across the entire globe.

There's a lot more but I'll probably have to make a second post going over relationships with characters in my dr like TFX, my relationship with each member of the Justice League, etc.

Questions About Creating Your OCs, going with 1, 3, 14 and 19 for Kimon!

1. What was the first element of your OC that you remember considering (name, appearance, backstory, etc.)?

this is so HARD because kimon is actually a compound of two old rp characters of mine. my very first rp character, siegfried, was an aggressively ordinary and well-adjusted farm boy who is doing the journeyman portion of his apprenticeship to become a carpenter. kimon’s appearance is directly derived from him, and in a way he’s an older siegfried that went through darker shit. as in, they share a certain shounen protagonist vibe. kimon’s namesake is another, later rp character, who himself was a spiritual successor to siegfried! the idea of a field/combat healer who is desperately trying to get away from the circle of violence comes from this proto-kimon.

as you can see, i tend to come up with characters concept first. for kimon too, my first thought was "hey, it would be cool to really fuck around with the idea that a necromancer is just a very late healer. maybe have a healer character who accidentally turns himself undead/into a lich.” then immediately after, if not simultaneously, i smashed old characters together to create a base to add to, haha!

3. How did you choose their name?

so i did not want to reuse the name siegfried, because it’s long and would be shortened to either sieg or fried and i don’t like either of them, and i’m pretty sure i chose it just because learning that nightmare from soulcalibur was actually siegfried was hilarious to me at the time. (i was around 15, it was like… 2007 or 2008?) kimon was the more recent oc that was a closer relative to current kimon, so i went with kimon for him too. i don’t… like the old kimon much, outside of the field healer aspect. it was kind of a rough spot in my rp career. i’m p sure the name came from a random generator, or from some baby name site? i just vibed with it. though… for a while i was worried people would think i just yoinked the final o from kimono. I think there were joking drawings of him in a kimono because of it? anyway. the name also fits the naming language i fucked around with for a while, so that’s why it stuck.

(and yeah it’s pronounced ki-mo-n, stress on the first syllable, because it stems from the time when i was writing exclusively in finnish. idk how else people might be inclined to pronounce it tho? let me know if you read it in a different way!)

14. If you had to narrow it down to 2 things that you MUST keep in mind while working with your OC, what would those things be?

he has literally died and reanimated himself to keep going. to keep protecting and healing those important to him. he will say it’s because he had no other choice due to the circumstances, and yet he keeps destroying himself instead of leaning on others.

under the cool and controlled exterior, this is a short guy who has had to get incredibly tough very young and has since been marathoning Challenges. there’s an Attitude to him. on the anime vs mmo healer spectrum. he’s wayyyyy in the ”get up, you die when i say so” corner. small dog energy, but not the impotent rage type, but the type where you’re scared for your life.

19. What is your favorite fact about your OC?

noooooo i can’t choose! uh, outside of stuff that’s also just some of my favorite story moments/concepts… i’m just really fond of the fact that when he’s using magic, the stronger it is, the more his eyes glow and the more they go from blue to white.

17. Made in America- I don't actually dislike any of the songs on the soundtrack but something has to get the bottom spot. Not my favourite act 2 opening ever so it is ranked here

That’s What You Call a Dream- This one is nice too, but for slower songs I think when they either make me have emotions or is just a really pretty tune, and this one is just not my favourite out of all the other slower songs on the soundtrack. I do like the line about 'Buck is rocking in his chair' implying Blanche and Buck growing old together being Blanche's dream since that is such a contrast to Bonnie's like of 'I don't need to end up in a rocking chair' in her own song about the future.

15. Bonnie- This song is sweet and it is nice and I like their bickering at the beginning of it lmao. And it's so cute how touched bonnie is when she's like 'you wrote a song for me?'. When will someone do something like this for me?

14. God’s Arms Are Always Open- I feel similarly to this one as Made in America but I think the second half of the song with the higher energy gospel (?) vibes is fun as a bigger dance number and I like the intervening clips with clyde throughout lol

13. What Was Good Enough for You- I think this song is really important in showing where bonnie and clyde both started out, and what their futures would have been like if they hadn't set out to do more with their lives.

12. Raise a Little Hell- This one I liked a lot better after having the visual scene for it because while the song is intense, just having the added plot context made it better for me. It's like, you can really tell clyde's desperation and he's at his breaking point and literally just having the visuals for that was so so good.

11. When I Drive- Love the energy and 10/10 will listen to this the next time I drive

10. You’re Goin’ Back to Jail- Love the energy in this as well. ZERO space for deadbeat husbands around here and also it is very catchy and is just a fun song overall

9. Raise a Little Hell (reprise)- I definitely ranked the reprise above the original because of all the tension/high stakes/whatever at this point of the plot which I think made this one have a bigger impact on me. And again, after having the visuals to this song I definitely like it better than I did before with just listening. And also since Buck is in this one too, just something about having both brothers team up to raise some hell, and with Ted's part as well with the exact opposition to clyde and buck?? Very good. Thumbs up from me.

8. You Can Do Better Than Him- This one also makes me feel emotions just with like looking back from what bonnie used to be vs where she is now and like. And the reprise as well once it becomes so clear how inevitable everything is, with one final look at her past self and innocence. IDK, like the reprise is just so haunting to me. I can't explain it

7. This World Will Remember Me- THE MEN IN THIS TOWN LIVE AND DIE AND ARE FORGOTTEN AND IT DOESN'T SEEM TO SCARE THEM I CAN'T WAIT TO GET AWAY

6. Too Late to Turn Back Now- *Such* a vibe. The complete 180 in this for bonnie, and it being the moment where she really is fully understanding how far into this and how irreversible this is now (hence. the name of the song). Also the song itself is just so so good too. Highly listenable.

However it is ranked slightly lower because of the misinterpretation my poor innocent mind made the error of assuming this song was about them actually dancing

4. Picture Show- Super super solid opening number and it does such a good job at setting everything up with bonnie and clyde's personalities. And also just the context for everything in general. And also I saw a recorded version from many mny years ago where young bonnie came out on stage while the car with her older self and clyde were still dead inside was still onstage, and then she starts singing about her hopes and dreams while in front of her own dead body after realizing none of those dreams??? That did something to me.

3. Dyin’ Ain’t So Bad- I'D RATHER BREATHE IN LIFE THAN DUSTY AIR. This makes me so emotional and it's such a beautiful song and like. You don't have no say, your heart decides, it's that simple I'm afraid' especially stands out to me and is just. :')

Tie. 1. This World Will Remember Us- Just. Everything about it. The beginning with busting clyde out of prison to the end where they make their way to the car and everything is perfect in their lives for that moment. And just the music is so incredible and. 1. Why do you like or dislike this character?

I'm always obsessed with characters struggling with humanity/personhood and Seven is the character to me that best exemplifies that struggle in addition to having so many complex narratives about trauma and guilt that are surprisingly well explored despite Voyager's tendency to avoid any serialized elements. plus Jeri Ryan's acting really sells it.

2. Favorite canon thing about this character?

her autistic swag. no but actually her bluntness and willingness to challenge others (particularly Janeway) is really refreshing and adds some great conflict to Voyager.

3. Least favorite canon thing about this character?

going to cop out and say the costuming lmao. it bothers me so fucking much and in my head Seven's been wearing science blues on Voyager since s4.

4. If you could put this character in any other media, be it a book, a movie, anything, what would you put them in?

i think Seven in any Doctor Who media would be really fascinating maybe specifically paired with the Eighth or Ninth Doctor? i think a lot of her problems around guilt and inhumanity are thoroughly explored in Doctor Who but she would also challenge the Doctor well when it comes to violence and whether the ends justify the means.

6. What's something you have in common with this character?

a fear of intimacy and insecurity about letting people around you know the real me... oh dear. on a more uplifting side, all of Seven's interactions with Tuvok really remind me of me and my dad. autism for the win.

7. What's something the fandom does when it comes to this character that you like?

idk how widespread it is but i love thinking of Seven as a physically disabled character and her post-Voyager having to navigate medical systems that are openly hostile (if not downright dangerous) and her eventually finding that it's easier to be in pain and patch injuries together by herself than trusting others.

8. What's something the fandom does when it comes to this character that you despise?

hmmm i don't think this is true on tumblr rn but i've read some older fic and posts that just comes off as weirdly infantilizing just because she isn't great with social interactions. (it's also just a larger problem of infantilizing neurodivergent coded characters).

9. Could you be roommates with this character?

tbh yeah? i think Seven might get annoyed at my tendency to leave clutter around and i might get annoyed at her tendency to mess around with things without telling people but i think we could pretty easily agree on boundaries and stick to them.

10. Could you be best friends with this character?

i would love to try but realistically i think both of us are too wary of social situations to actually be close friends.

11. Would you date this character?

if Seven asked me on a date then i would say yes but also i'm arospec and Seven has way too many relationship issues going on so that would not last.

12. What's a headcanon you have for this character?

Seven cut off all contact with Voyager's crew after Icheb died because of her guilt over his death except for Naomi who she sent a message to on every birthday.

gonna be honest the last thing i associate with Seven are emojis so... none?

maybe a bit predictable but i would love a steampunk redesign of Seven.

15. What's your favorite ship for this character? (Doesn't matter if it's canon or not.)

Seven/Raffi!! they have a great combination of being actually cute and having tons of unresolved conflict and some parallels (i.e. Seven accidentally causing her sort-of-son's death because she tried to be in an intimate relationship vs Raffi pushing her son away because she was too focused on her career and Doing the Right Thing). i really wish their relationship was a bigger part of Picard (particularly s3) and we didn't keep having them break-up offscreen and then ambiguously get back together like their relationship felt like such an afterthought and i realllllly hope we get some show or movie or even a book where Seven and Raffi get to be lead characters together.

16. What's your least favorite ship for this character?

Seven/Shaw is one of my few hated ships. if you like it then sure whatever i don't really care but i'm incredibly uninterested in shipping characters where one repeatedly deadnames the other and is just generally rude and dismissive. i actually really like their canon dynamic, i think Shaw is a great semi-antagonist for Seven with good narrative purpose and i dig the begrudging respect he eventually has for her but I Do Not ship it.

17. What's a ship for this character you don't hate but it's not your favorite that you're fine with?

Seven/B'Elanna. it's not something i really picked up on watching voyager and i'm not super interested in it but i definitely see how it could work and be a good dynamic! i'm not a b7 shipper but i support their beliefs.

18. How about a relationship they have in canon with another character that you admire?

admire is a strong word (and tbh i don't think i admire any of Seven's relationships, she's an absolute mess on that front) but i'm fascinated by Janeway and Seven's relationship. it was obviously written to be a mentor & student dynamic but so much of it is fucked up in a really compelling way (with some strong sapphic vibes going on) with Janeway essentially forcing Seven to be human and presuming to know who Seven should be and then acting surprised when Seven isn't her perfect protege (even echoing the control the Borg Queen has over the Collective. sorry i just watched Dark Frontier the other day so that's fresh in my mind). i would die to see them have a scene in Picard era because there's just so much to get into.

19. How about a relationship they have in canon that you don't like?

Seven & the EMH. in the Voyager of version that exists in my head, they have a good dynamic and friendship and i generally politely ignore some of the later canon stuff but yeah... not a fan of the Doctor's crush on her that just ends up falling into a very objectifying "older man is in love with his young female student" dynamic in seasons 6 and 7.

20. Which other character is the ideal best friend for this character, the amount of screentime they share doesn't matter?

i'm forever bitter than Seven and Hugh didn't have A SINGLE SCENE together. especially because the actors are actual friends! injustice! Seven and Hugh would be so cool together as they've shared so many of the same experiences but came out of them as very different people – Hugh choosing to be kind in the face of hatred and help the xBs vs Seven running away from the problem so she doesn't have to face her past. but yeah. Hugh is ideal best friend material.

21. If you're a fic writer and have written for this character, what's your favorite thing to do when you're writing for this character? What's something you don't like?

hm. i've mostly written (incomplete) stuff for Picard-era Seven and i really like to hone in on smaller movements and specify that they're very purposeful and planned because Seven has spent so long practicing "looking" and behaving human enough as a survival tactic (same thing with the way she speaks) and i love having her movements and speech pattern fall back to her earlier self when she's stressed or focused on something else.

something i don't like is that i have a hard time capturing her internal monologue and the way she views the world, particularly with Voyager-era Seven) as it always ends up coming out either too robotic or too human.

22. If you're a fic reader, what's something you like in fics when it comes to the character? Something you don't like?

hmmm i really like fics that explore some of the darker body horror type nature of the xBs (and particularly Seven) and i tend to get annoyed with stories (including canon ones) that erase the fact that part of her is still Borg.

23. Favorite picture of this character?

i do love the screencap that's my current icon (from The Haunting of Deck 12) but s1 Picard Seven is my favorite look of hers and particularly this shot is just. very good.

24. What other character from another fandom of yours that reminds you of them?

oh this is an incredibly obscure pull but Compassion from the Eighth Doctor Adventure books who is a clone that's been recycled so many times that she's lost any resemblance to the person she was based on and has to struggle with not being a real person in a way that reminds me a lot of Seven.

25. What was your first impression of this character? How about now?

awhile before i started watching Voyager i had a friend who kept telling me how much i would like Seven (they guessed correctly) and from them i knew a) she was queer b) she was a badass c) she struggled with the idea of humanity which... again. is exactly my type of character and my impression hasn't majorly changed other than realizing that she is a much more nuanced and complex character than i originally thought.

B'Elanna Torres:

1. Why do you like or dislike this character?

i love B'Elanna! she's just a good character who has so much internal strife but tries to be strong and not let anyone know that she's in pain which is tragic but i am a tragedy enjoyer first and foremost.

2. Favorite canon thing about this character?

i think the sadness she has, especially when she's alone and there's no one to argue with, is so compelling and Roxann Dawson plays her really well. i also love that she's shown as very competent and and intelligent but didn't graduate from the Academy and doesn't have a particular love of Starfleet unlike 95% of other Star Trek characters.

3. Least favorite canon thing about this character?

because of the all (or at least mostly) white writers i think her character often leans into some unfortunate "fiery/angry Latina" stereotypes that's not recognized enough because it's always under the guise of "oh well it's because she's Klingon" but like. assigning undesirable personality traits to races, even if fictional, is. still racist.

4. If you could put this character in any other media, be it a book, a movie, anything, what would you put them in?

I'm not huge into Star Wars but I think B'Elanna would thrive joining the rebels in the original trilogy.

5. What's the first song that comes to mind when you think about them?

it might be the fact that i'm currently listening to this song but Mama by My Chemical Romance.

6. What's something you have in common with this character?

i think we both have a tendency to doubt our ability to do things that we're good at when faced with people who might be more qualified but less talented but i love how quickly B'Elanna does gain confidence in her abilities in s1 and 2 and i hope to follow in her footsteps.

7. What's something the fandom does when it comes to this character that you like?

i have a lot of respect for the closeted lesbian B'Elanna headcanons i must say.

8. What's something the fandom does when it comes to this character that you despise?

idk if this is a widespread fandom take or not but i always dislike the idea that B'Elanna would remain in Starfleet post-Voyager. like the show itself kind of forgets that the Maquis crew on Voyager still has some pretty big beef with the Federation (for good reason) and i don't think she would ever want to join Starfleet unless they have some systemic changes.

9. Could you be roommates with this character?

i think we would definitely have certain habits that would annoy each other but like with Seven, i feel like if we came up with some boundaries both of us would stick to them and it would work out.

10. Could you be best friends with this character?

we have very different personalities that would clash a bit too much to be best friends but i think we would get along.

11. Would you date this character?

again, probably not more just because i'm aro and not super interested in dating and B'Elanna deserves someone better than me.

12. What's a headcanon you have for this character?

after returning from the Delta Quadrant, B'Elanna opens an engineering shop where she rehabs old ships (with or without Tom).

13. What's an emoji, an emoticon and/or any symbol that reminds you of this character or you think the character would use a lot?

i think B'Elanna would respond to a lot of messages with just the middle finger🖕

B'Elanna would rock 90s grunge fashion so hard.

hmmm i thought about this for awhile and honestly i just can't really think of a ship that makes sense for her because she deserves much better than the canon characters she interacts with.

16. What's your least favorite ship for this character?

i've seen B'Elanna/Chakotay around a few times and... no. not for me please.

17. What's a ship for this character you don't hate but it's not your favorite that you're fine with?

B'Elanna/Seven (as I said in Seven's section)

18. How about a relationship they have in canon with another character that you admire?

i generally like B'Elanna & Chakotay's canon relationship (with a few notable exceptions where things get weird) and i think Chakotay is such a good mentor figure for her as someone who shares the same political ideology but is older and wiser and knows better than to act only out of anger.

19. How about a relationship they have in canon that you don't like?

B'Elanna/Tom and it's not that i don't think the characters could work together, there are a few moments from the show and people's fanons or whatnot that have a lot of potential. and there's so much potential inherent in two characters with a lot of issues that they tend to hide with humor or aggression or whatever who are now forced to indefinitely be part of this crew/family. however i hate that all of their interactions are plagued with 90s sexism and always shown from Tom's perspective of how much he struggles being in a relationship and remembering to pay attention to B'Elanna as if that's just. an expected part of being in a relationship rather than a problem that needs to be resolved. and so many episodes focus on their relationship problems and we rarely get to see them being happy so it comes off feeling like they're trapped in an unhappy marriage.

20. Which other character is the ideal best friend for this character, the amount of screentime they share doesn't matter?

B'Elanna and Harry! they have such a good dynamic in s1 with Harry being the embodiment of Starfleet idealism and B'Elanna being so jaded towards Federation idealism and Harry over time developing his own Problems and B'Elanna beginning to resolve her issues. i wish we got more of them together!

21. If you're a fic writer and have written for this character, what's your favorite thing to do when you're writing for this character? What's something you don't like?

i haven't written any fic for B'Elanna yet so i'll just skip this one

22. If you're a fic reader, what's something you like in fics when it comes to the character? Something you don't like?

tbh i haven't read much B'Elanna fic. i'll get around to it! i've only been a Voyager fan for like 6 months.

23. Favorite picture of this character?

i love her curly hair from the beginning of s6 sooooo much

24. What other character from another fandom of yours that reminds you of them?

Clara from Doctor Who (specifically in s9). they both have some deep insecurities that they try to cover up with quips and deflection. they're also both very clever but don't necessarily think through their actions and have a tendency to throw themselves into danger.

25. What was your first impression of this character? How about now?

tbh i didn't really have a strong opinion about any of the Voyager characters when i first started the show and kind of expected B'Elanna to fall into the mixed (alien) race stereotype of torn between two worlds and some of the accompanying racist tropes but tbh B'Elanna became a much deeper character than i ever expected both with exploring the tension of her heritage and internalized racism (Barge of the Dead & Lineage come to mind) but also exploring her mental health (Extreme Risk) and how her character reveals some of the issues inherent in the Federation's existence. i just wish that Voyager did more and was willing to create a more complete arc for her that doesn't leave some stuff like her self harming behaviors and grief over the Maquis alone after one episode. i also didn't expect her to be probably the most competent engineer in all of Star Trek but i maintain that she is.

i've been tagged by @plavoptice and @aimmyarrowshigh and boy are y'all in for a ride. in no particular order:

diagnosis: murder -- first live action non-soap that was appointment television for me. it ran from 1993-2001 on cbs and i've seen every episode. dick van dyke plays a doctor who helps his son (played by his actual son barry) solve crimes.

the simpsons -- my dad loved this show while we were growing up and we watched every episode until i was in high school.

the young and the restless and all my children -- abovementioned soaps. these are the soaps my mom watched. she would record them on the vcr (they ran back to back on different stations) so she could watch them later without commercials. i have been watching shemar moore since i was 7 years old.

survivor -- for DECADES i watched every episode. i was in 8th grade when season 1 aired. the last 4 or so seasons i haven't bothered watching, though. when people who hadn't been alive when the first season aired started being cast i just couldn't. :|

band of brothers -- since i met a couple of the surviving members of easy company in 2004, bob has held a special place in my heart. it took like 14 years for me to latch onto the show in a fandom capacity. between 2004 and 2018 i would most often view it as i napped on the couch while it ran on spike tv or something as a marathon over memorial weekend, the fourth of july, or veterans' day.

grey's anatomy -- watched a bunch of this in college because some girls on my hall freshman year were superfans. <3 please note i began college during season 1.

the walking dead -- i found the first 3 episodes online in fall of 2010 after a friend on livejournal had tagged it as potentially interesting due to the casting of norman reedus. i didn't know who he was. i don't regret starting the show, but i do regret staying on past season 6, even though there were 2 episodes in season 10 that were like ... exquisite.

deadliest catch!!! -- i fly southwest mostly and there's always a couple of episodes available to watch for free. i just ... idk, it's cold and wet and super dangerous and the captains are so fucking catty with each other. i just like it (still).

law and order: svu -- my comfort show. i have probably seen every episode.

pitch -- we got one season, and were robbed.

chicago fire -- while i watched med first, and i'm currently flying through pd, fire is ... well, it's something.

rescue me -- speaking of fire ....

big love -- i've re-watched just once, it might be time for another.

the wire -- my first watch was later than it should have been.

lost -- of course. the first couple of seasons were amazing, and then i learned that the creators didn't have an end in mind and uh... by the end of season 3 that was very, very clear. i still don't understand the finale.

🌻: writers block fr. my brain jus stops working. what keeps me going is that i love writing, i can just shut my brain down and type and end up with 3k words like nothing even happened. i love it.

🌿: creating makes me feel powerful idk like writing is such an escape , even when most of my writing is projection, it feels better to put it on someone else and something else. it gives me a chance to breathe and to think about things

🍉: like i said, projecting. it helps in terms of being able to sort things out, to problem solve. if i can figure it out for my characters, i can figure it out for myself. it helps

🎀: my writing has improved significantly since i was 14/15. i really love the writing style i’ve settled on.

🎈: again, big on imagery and behind the scenes things. love it.

🎉: dude?? every time i post a fic i lay down and read it and feel proud of myself. always celebrate your work!!! always!!!

💞: the most important part of the story, to me, is being able to picture it. when i write things i want to be able to see it in my head, i don’t want unanswered questions. i want to be able to feel what the characters are feeling and be there with them u know? i am a sucker for imagery and racing thoughts. i want to be in the characters head.

💝: definitely my first one. was super worried ab posting that one.

🤍: first big one/religious one. for sure.

🕯️: probably my religious one and the one i did about theo and his guilt. lots of projection, like, so much. but it wasn’t difficult to write so much as hard to realize what i was writing? and ig just recognize how much i was hurting.

💥: theo guilt fic!!! deserves more reads and credit. it’s sad but it’s probably the most honest theo i have ever written.

🍭: i started writing as a diary type of thing. it helps to smash a keyboard instead of anything else.

📡: i think writing is important because it’s giving people a voice u know? like even if it’s just fandom things, people are being creative and allowing themselves to dive into a different reality to build new things. it’s fun!!

1.How long have you been in this fandom?

not that long, actually! while i’ve known about the series since like?? middle school?? I never actually started participating in the fandom space until around October of 2021! and even now i’m still like? tip toeing around bc im scared.

2. Who's your fictional boyfriend/husband?

I’ll be so honest with y’all rn. I don’t actually have a DL character that I like that much— I really just kinda cycle through them in terms of how much I like them. As of right now though?? Probably Ruki or Richter. (lol bitches with R names)

3. Why do you like them?

richter?? well I actually hated his guts more than any other character until recently. idk what changed to be perfectly honest with you. just kinda woke up one day and was like “mmm i’ll give him a chance.” i do like the potential for angsty scenarios though!

as for ruki, he’s also one i wasnt fanning over until recently. i didn’t hate him ofc, but the only content of him i really indulged in on up until now was the anime. and when i saw him in the show i was like “okay” then moved on. after reading his routes though? i started to like him a lot more 😞 and ofc Jas ( @ruki--mukami ) has a flawless portrayal of him that i feel in love with so 💃

4. Have you make acquaintance with anyone that ships themselves with the same character?

I have no idea if they ship themselves with the characters I listed, or if they’re just one of their favourites. But Ava ( @fruit-of-infidelity ) and Jas ( @ruki--mukami ) are two people i’m fortunate enough to be mutuals with :’).

i feel pretty great about it actually. it’s nice to find people who have the same amount of love for a character that you do 💃

honestly yeah. seeing different characters combinations go in different directions is always a treat! i really enjoy scrolling through the threads.

as for a ship with my oc(s)— Virek is relatively new. so i haven’t developed deep enough relationships to have a solid ship with him yet. HOWEVER! gwen, my old oc, had a few ships that i adored.

My official week 1 rankings of the houseguests. As always, these are subject to change but I have a feeling some of them are pretty set in stone.

1. Queen Taylor- Homegirl has done absolutely nothing wrong and has proven to be super sweet, caring, and thoughtful. I have mad respect for her because she is keeping her head up and playing to stay, and I hope that even if she does leave this week (most likely) that she returns for something because I would love to see her compete.

2. Brittany- So far she is the only person to have reached out to Taylor and fully explain to her what’s going on in the house. Is she excused for partaking in it and not saying anything before it all happened? No, but at least she had the decency to do it eventually. She’s the best of the worst.

3. Nicole- I cannot believe that I am putting the ex-cop up at number 3 but compared to everyone else this woman is not bad I fear. She is one of the few people to address the oddity of the mob mentality and Taylor bullying going on, and even though she’s done nothing about it for some reason, at least she is fucking aware that this isn’t normal.

4. Michael- He has moved down because he has participated in Taylor slander and doesn’t seem to want to be actively against it, but I do think it’s iconic that he won veto as the HOH’s target and he’s not the worst offender of it all.

5. Indy- She’s kind of irrelevant but she’s starting to defend Taylor so she’s working her way up for me. I don’t think she’s ever been problematic and she’s probably next in line to be evicted but I don’t hate her.

6. Alyssa- Cannot believed she moved up this far but she has legit been so irrelevant and quiet since the first two days that I don’t have much to say. She was a bitch at first but she’s been shutting up so she’s indifferent rn.

7. Turner- He’s done next to nothing to the point where I keep forgetting he’s here, but he still sucks bc he’s been participating in Taylor bashing. 

8. Joseph- This man is confusing bc he’ll say stuff like, “I don’t mind Taylor” then conflict that with, “Taylor called Daniel racist” like boy pick a side.....he still isn’t the worst though somehow.

9. Terrance- Although he is far from the worst, he still has said some shit about Taylor without knowing her and seems to be way too happy about this situation. Like I get that you now have a better chance of staying and good for you, but also fuck you bringing her down for your benefit.

10. Daniel- Some of y’all would probably rank him way lower, but tbh I think this guy is just a fucking idiot. He has no idea that what he is doing is wrong and has even been aware of how it looks, but lets himself be manipulated by assholes to keep it up even though the implications are right there. Stop crying about being seen as problematic and change that I don’t fucking get it. You’re dumb and ignorant. 

11. Kyle- Cannot believe I am ranking a Trumpie this high. Literally cannot, but I have to because he hasn’t done anything super problematic yet. Still goes down though bc of Trumpie shit. 

12. Ameerah- The reason why she’s a little higher up is because she is trying to build an alliance against the bros and has potential to play a great game minus all the bullying, but she has lost my stan card after all of the obvious bullying, mocking of Taylor’s mother, and laughing. She also gets pissed easily and believes every lie that’s being told to her so idk if she really is gonna make it that far or not.

13. Poo Poo Pooch- Fuck this guy. I knew he sucked, I knew he was an asshole, fuck this guy. I hate that he’s not still at the bottom because he’s not one of the main antagonists, but he’s still garbage. 

14. Jizzmine- This bitch screams jealousy and is literally the most annoying person I’ve ever had to listen to on here. Her voice sucks, her personality sucks, and she’s a bitch for no reason coming up with shit and shitting on a woman bc she’s insecure and sad like.....get tf over it and grow tf up. You’re how old???

15. Palomayo- Y’all already know why this bitch is this low. Homegirl is cracked out of her fucking mind, spreading rumors, speaking in fucking fast forward, losing her mind, and literally pretending to be cool with Taylor when SHE started this shit. I hate her. She literally deserves nothing but hell.

16. Derek F 2.0/Monte- I hate this man. Not only did he start the rumor and shit about Taylor and come after her for literally no reason, but the way he talks down to her is actually disgusting and honestly he is the reason everyone else is doing it too. This man is the problem with the group and is the actual cancerous personality thank you very much. He is awfully sexist and gross and needs to be removed immediately. Goodbye.

OTH 2x10 REWATCH

OK I’ve gotten a couple asks for more OTH reviews and what had happened was the show was slowly sucking the life out of me that when I got to season 2, I couldn’t keep it together so I didn’t sit and watch episodes, I would skip ahead 10 seconds every few minutes and then I was getting so sick of it that I went back to watching GoT. LOL. But since it seems to be something a few people like I will go back to where I left off and do a couple of reviews.

1. Ugh Peyton and her like two-episode coke addiction arc. I actually find it hilarious that I hate Peyton more and not less now that I’m not a preteen.

2. IIIIIIIIII DON’T WANNA BE ANYTHING OTHER THAN WHAT I’VE BEEN TRYNA BE LATELYYYYYYYYYYYYY jesus what a convoluted line.

3. “Nathaniel Hawthorne once wrote--” SHUT UP, LUCAS.

4. Lucas’ jacket, chair and wall are all the same tone. This is ridiculous.

5. I’m trying to decide if Dan hiring Jules to get into a relationship with Keith only to break his heart is high school petty or actually insidious. Maybe it’s because it SOUNDS like a high school prank. I mean, Nate did start dating Haley to mess with Lucas, which is very teen. But I guess like father, like son, idk.

6. Lucas, the colour brown doesn’t give you a personality.

7. “Because you’re better than that” the slut shaming in OTH is laughably prevalent. Brooke's decision to sleep with Felix without wanting a relationship doesn’t make her “less than”, my god. Especially since what’s meant to be conveyed is that she deserves an emotionally fulfilling relationship.

SIDE NOTE, I love how in the episode before (formal) when Anna is drunk and initiates sex with him and he stops it, it’s because he wants to make sure he’s in love first and not “you’re drunk and therefore can’t really consent to having sex”, I hooked up with the DOUCHIEST dude but before that time happened there was almost a time before that but I was tipsy and he wasn’t and so he was like nah, HE understood this concept but not Lucas Scott, The Sensitive Hero of Tree Hill   (and before anyone goes in the Olde Decade of 2000s, this was 2000s too)

8. “It took Brooke less than an hour to hook up with Lucas.” “Lucas wouldn’t do that, he’s with Anna.” “Really?” *points*

12. The reveal of Peyton’s locker has me like, realistically, if she went to school and saw that on her locker, she would go straight to the principal, not open it and get her books etc.

25. I always thought this exchange was unintentionally funny. “Why wouldn’t you want to take the test?” “For lots of reasons! Basketball! The way I want to live my life!” Because while ‘the way I want to live my life’ encompasses many things, Lucas only lists two things. And also you could die if you continued to play basketball, Lucas, you’re a teenager, not stupid.

26. “Do you really think I would put a game before my life?” “I would.” “Oh, GROW UP” I wish she said that with more irony, the way Lily in GG would say it.

27. Also, I love how it’s all LUCAS LOVES BASKETBALL, BASKETBALL IS HIS LIFE but it’s also not at the same time? Unless he’s actually PLAYING basketball, Lucas doesn’t really talk about it or seem to care that much about it.

28. Lucas is a minor, can’t she legally make him take a test?

33. So the Peyton and Anna scene is actually a pretty good scene, I just think we need a bit more before Peyon gets to this place. What I mean is, the locker incident happens and then she and Brooke are sitting outside and Brooke is trying to cheer her up and she’s like the Old P Sawyer would’ve just rolled with this and she’s like I haven’t been feeling like the Old P Sawyer lately or whatever then she cuts school then when Lucas comes to visit her she’s crying and then she tells him to leave and then she’s sitting in the room listening to angsty music then Anna comes and tells her to laugh this off and then Peyton responds with the album and “what about the girl who can’t?” speech like she was always going to make a statement when nothing beforehand suggests that she was going to do that, it seemed like she was just going to try and wait for it to blow over so if Anna’s response sparked that anger then the dialogue should’ve been like, “You know, people have been telling me to laugh this off, to just roll with it, but...” *pause* and then we can get to the scene.

anywho… i love butt fucking season. idk but one of my weird coping mechanisms is literally you know when your butt just starts hurting for some reason. and it’s not like a stinging sensation, it’s more like something has just went inside you.

i don’t know what it is but lately i had been thinking that it is jonghyun fucking me in the ass because i’m weird like that. but fr it gets worse when you realise that it only ever happens when i’m bending down-

i think i (anal)ysed naked onew! he’s a reflection on me… of how i wanted to live my life. all carefree and innocent looking, drugs could also be linked to an addiction in which it allows him to live the way he wants to, but the side effect could be the constant non-con he would do. this makes sense because i struggled with my weed addiction since i was about 13-14 and then started again at 15-17. i stopped because i went to japan and then started shortly after i came back. i am now self aware that i needed to get help, which is why i had been clean since june this year. in my newer stories, i had noticed that onew was starting to become self aware more often than usual which was why in the post that didn’t see the light of day due to obvious reasons, you could see that there were precautions he did to himself to prevent people from getting hurt which was why after he non-coned the first girl he was seen the next day in a bubble showing that he took the courage to go back to the hospital, told them that it didn’t work and went for the other option they had. however, i’m not sure that happened since i didn’t see him after that nor he gave a hint about it. it could also be that he was forced to go by anyone living with him but since he did have his moments and even once told me to hold him whilst a chicken was walking past, i want to think the latter. he seems like he knows what’s going on and when he does, he tends to be a bit emotional and stressed out. i hope he does change one day, that’s all i could ever say.

As long as a coping mechanism is safe and not harmful then it doesn't matter how weird it is. And yours is not weird at all. And interesting you concluded Onew represents apart of yourself. Like seeing an unhinged Onew who has no control over his insatiable desires kinda represents how you view your relationship with your vices. And him enforcing his own restraints just mimic you growing more in control over your own situation. Dreams are a vehicle for the subconscious to work through everything going on in your waking life. Like my friend noticed a theme in my dream where I just let things happen and it does showcase how I play a passive role in my sex life where I just check out sometimes and let things happen. And addictions are really hard to overcome but you can overcome it and anyway to help you work through, soothe and replace with healthier alternatives are just fine. Just remember to be kind to yourself.
