if u wanna make some slapping hors d'oeuvres

step 1: take your favorite bread. if you're slicing your own bread, go for about 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick (for metric, aim around the 1cm mark)

step 2: ladle or pour some chili oil or chili crisp onto the bread, about 1tbs. (enough for the bread to sponge up, but not so much it soaks it. you can add more to taste or to cover more surface area, but you don't need to overwhelm it)

>> optional add: a light spreading or schmeer of your favorite tangy, flavorful condiment. a good honey mustard is recommended (i've been using arby's horsey sauce and it's pretty dece)

lay one or two slices of thin-sliced deli chicken or turkey breast - or enough to cover the surface area of the bread, as need may be - so that they drape over the edges of the bread

lay ~1 slice of your favorite cheese on top of the meat. American cheese isn't recommended because as melty as it is, the melt isn't the only thing we're aiming for, here, and their thin melty nature seems to wick even more moisture out and over-dries the cheese into a burnt-cheese skin that isn't fantastic in the air fryer. I've been using havarti and provolone because they brown nice but leave a good melty interior.

I use an air fryer for these, but an oven should work as well (unfortunately i don't know how that'll convert quite yet), but air fryer 375°F-400°F (190°C-205°C) and arrange your shingles on the tray or basket so that there's enough space between them for airflow.

I prefer to cold-start them because it makes a crispier shingle, so i put the tray in and THEN start the airfryer so that it cooks through the preheat. This makes the cheese take on a nice, crispy skin and should be good and melty between the skin and the meat.

~8-12 minutes on the timer

the end result should give you a very tasty, savory, crispy shingle with a WHAM of umami from the chili oil.

sorry if you’ve already posted something like this but with the shitty news about duolingo I was wondering if you knew of any other resources for studying Brazilian Portuguese? thank you!

i know of a few options! first thing, if you want a pretty close replacement for duolingo, i downloaded busuu from some posts recommending it today and it's pretty similar but better structured imo, and there seems to be some social features that allow you to communicate with native speakers, which is pretty neat!

otherwise, there are various programs out there that i haven't myself used-- i know babbel exists, but i think it involves paying for most of the services. this video from languagejones covers some good things to do alongside duolingo, so you could seek those out as well. and there's various ways of doing directed self-study without an app or anything, which takes a lot of dedication to keep yourself accountable but if you're able to do so that's a really solid options-- you want to probably find some resources to help you know how to progress and maintain an amount of structure.

on that point, for more traditional resources, @/salvadorbonaparte has a megafolder of languages resources with some great stuff for portuguese, including a textbook on learning portuguese as a spanish speaker that's written in english (incredibly helpful for a few of us on here lmao) as well as a few other textbooks and guides (folder from this post), and i'm sure there are plenty of ways to find other textbooks and guides for free in various places. if you're in college or anything like that, taking a class is also a good option if you can, especially if your school has a good portuguese program.

personally i'm planning to use busuu for the time being alongside poking through textbooks above and my usual watching/listening/reading cultural stuff, which seems to be working pretty well. i think the daily prompting aspect is what's most important for me personally, and because busuu has that that'll be most helpful for me as a replacement. hope that helps!

it's a tedious task, playing busy parent on his way to gather all the birthday materials he needed. they did not have a mother to bake a cake, or a father to sing along to a song. it seemed like once again, ephraim would be filling those shoes in for his sister. for days, he had balanced in his own obligations between commissioning a cake, purchasing party goods, and finding the perfect gift. all the while, keeping his sister oblivious to his actions.

all that work was going to pay off now, when she walked through the door into her dorm. she would be greeted with as much confetti and banners of celebration he could find. she would have a cake to indulge in, like one can only on their birthday... and after, she'll have a gift to open that will hopefully please. he'd never been the best at picking out gifts, but she always seemed to appreciate it nonetheless.

he pondered the gift in his hands as he waited for his sisters return, fiddling with the poorly wrapped box. inside, he knew a necklace was awaiting it's open. a nice light blue gem of some kind, matched with gold all around it's edges. not too fancy, but surely something that would be eye catching. it was worth every piece of gold he spent commissioning it, though... if she liked it, that is.

he is snapped away from his thoughts when he hears approaching footsteps. a good sign she has finally returned to her quarters, likely ready to end the day thinking her brother had forgot about her. he smiled as he put the gift away for the moment. ephraim was a forgetful man, some might say a downright oblivious one. he was not revered for his kindness, or even his social awareness... but for his sister, and for his late parents, he would always do this.

as she stepped through the door, he is eager to walk into view of her, poised in ready. "happy birthday, dear sister. i hope you didn't think I had forgotten about you."

There was little Eirika could ever ask for when it came to her birthday. Perhaps it came with the privilege of being a Princess, but material wealth held little weight compared to something as simple as spending time with her family and friends. Even here at the Academy she had no shortage of familiar faces to wish her well— though, there were some that she could only have hoped to see.

‘I still haven’t had the chance to spend much time with Ephraim since I’ve arrived…’ she muses to herself as she walks through the dormitory, a slight frown forming, ‘I would have liked to see him, especially today.’

The door to her room opens slowly, and as she peers inside it’s as if the gods had heard her prayers. The frown of a sister forgotten is long gone, replaced with a surprised expression that morphs into a smile, so wide that it aches. “Brother…!” Her body practically soars towards his, pulling him into a hug.

so i dated this girl in 2018 who was about a year younger than me, i was around 13-14 during the time so she was 12-13 or so (also since we were so young she might be better now, i have no idea. i could've done things better too and should've left, but we were both kids too, so. yeah)

first of all she'd be possessive over her biases, so a lot of the time i had to hold back around her if i liked the same idol she did, and for quite a while i really disliked nct because of her (but im fully over it now)

she used to go on omegle all the time and she purposefully tagged it with "asian, korean, nsfw, dom" etcetc and she'd do this on call right in front of me, flirting with strangers AND she'd lie about her age ALLLLLL the time.. so often she'd claim to be 16-18 to people who were 18+

me and our other 2 friends told her Not to do that but i dont think we ourselves even fully grasped the situation. to this day im not sure how far any of her conversations or friendships went with people who she lied to :/ i only know about one guy who realized/found out(?) that she wasnt in fact the age she said she was and i think he just cut it off and she was talking about it to me

The suicide thing is absolutely abhorrent behavior oh my god…. I don’t know WHAT it is with friends or relationships who threaten suicide and then either block you or disappear for hours on end and they don’t understand the fucking TOLL that takes on somebody. Like they really think it’s okay to make you go about your day after having to practically talk somebody out of suicide. And then it turns out that wasn’t even the case :/ as an adult I realize how ODD it is that people do that shit at all, and to CHILDREN. I had a friend who did the same to me when I was in the 1D fandom and she was 20, I was only 13. BOY OH BOY IM SO EXCITED TO TALK ABOUT MY OCS

So right now I have two main series that I'm working on, and one manuscript for a different series that is finished and going through editing.

Two main series are called Makings of Magic--previously the "Alexis" series--and Crystal Kingdom. The manuscript I have finished is the first book in my Save the Princess (STP) duology. It was my nano project for 2020 (and I won nano!! which was nice). Most of these have tags: tmom or the makings of magic and stp1 or stp, idr if ive posted much about ck before

The Makings of Magic

This is a whole ass world, nine book + companions series that I've been working on since I was 10. I could literally be here all day explaining who all the characters are, but I'll just go for the main gang and a summary:

Summary: Fantasy minor professional jock Alic gets kidnapped by baddies because they think she has a secret magic that they want to use their evil ways to un-secret. She does not have any of this magic. She ends up being the center of a secret-magic conspiracy and eventually is freed and decides to go after the people who kidnapped her, with another guy they kidnapped, and accidentally creates an international incident and starts a war while the conspiracy-nuts continue to try and prove that they're right by attacking people Alic knows.

Alic:

Alic is the mc of the series. She's very silly, and very brave. She's one of those people who will do anything on a dare. You cannot scare you, you cannot phase her, you cannot make her uncomfortable. She never lies because she doesn't see the point of it. She isn't afraid of anything. Light of my life. Not very smart <3

Gray:

Gray is the local prince, and Alic's best friend. They're basically QPR partners. He spends most of his time changing his personality so that people will like him (and thereby listen to him) but really he's very petty and a little neurotic and when combined with Alic willing to do very dumb things, because with Alic, Gray doesn't have to pretend to be put-together, and they love each other a lot and get into loads of trouble <3

Topaz:

Topaz is the manager of Alic's fantasy jock team. He's very suspicious of other people, and very good at spying on others. Alic (and by extension, Gray) decide he is their friend and he gets dragged into their crazy adventures. He leaves for three chapters in book three and they accidentally commit war crimes.

Jacian:

Jacian is a prince and scholar of magic from a nearby kingdom and he is blackmailed into helping the conspiracy-nuts essentially torture Alic until they figure out what magic she has. He and his gang of do-gooders end up freeing Alic, but in the process the conspiracy-nuts kill his father and give Jacian memory loss and brain damage and he sets out to try and figure out what he has forgotten: which is who killed his father and who the Big Bad is. This is a majority of the plot in books three and four as well as his side companion book. He's kinda wishy washy and nerdy which Alic thinks is cute.

Crystal Kingdom

Summary: This is my Princess and the Pea retelling. I'm not going to go too much into the plot here because hehe i like it being a surprise.

Zira: Zira is a paranoid, neurotic prince of a city-state that is constantly under attack (hence the paranoia and neurosis). He's also mean and bitchy and very petty, and doesn't trust Leihari, the supposed nearby Princess who supposedly lost her family and her country after a usurper supposedly kicked her family out. What sucks is that he may also be falling in love with her.

Leihari: Leihari is (supposedly) a princess from a far away city-state who has lost her crown and is staying with Zira and his family. In return for their kindness, she is helping them out with matters of state and other things a princess is supposed to do. She's kind, and a little sad, but trying to make the best of her new situation. It would be much easier of the prince stopped being mean to her. What's really frustrating is that he's wonderful to everyone else--it's just that he's paranoid. But seeing what he is like when he is nice to others makes her yearn to earn his trust, and maybe she starts falling in love with him too. Supposedly. But in the meantime, she isn't going to take any of his shit.

STP

Summary: My nano baby! This is a Princess and the Pauper retelling with dragons!! It's very exciting and i love it a lot :) Takes place in a historical alternate universe (with dragons) in about 500 BCE, in Ancient Israel because I'm Jewish and I thought why the hell not.

Adina: The Princess. Adina was meant to be married off to the highest bidder as any good princess of the time will, until her older brother was killed and she became next in line to the throne. Realizing that she knew nothing about her own people--after all, she's been expecting to be married off--she decides to switch places with someone who looks exactly like her. And everything is fine until the dragons attack.

Adina is quiet and generally second-best, and scared of the unknown and not meant for adventure, but she has a responsibility to go after the dragon that attacked her people, so off she goes. She's even shocked herself by how brave she's trying to be.

Dekeli: The Extortionist. A cloth merchant who works for dragons and was doing fine until everyone in the known world came out trying to kill a bunch of them. Now he has to get his latest job finished, and the easiest way for him to do that is by extorting Adina's secrets. Ironically, he's the person she can trust the most. Probably.

He's snarky and rude and very good at what he does. Adventure finds him, and he goes with a flair and a quip. It gets on Adina's nerves.

Mara: The Pauper. She's meek and smart and that's all Adina needs from her, so that's good. Right? Nothing more needs to be said, right? She has no ulterior motives--why would she?... right?
