hi, i saw your post answering nick deactivating all their profiles and i want to admit this since i feel kinda responsible but i think i mightve been the reason why they deactivated, you dont need to post this if you dont want to but consider this an admission of guilt of some sort

because nick had all xyr profiles still up even after the alligations happened for a good month or so, i spontaiously remembered their existance one night and realised that, by locking their profile on twt (i didnt follow xem back) and noticing that most of their art wasnt on there ment that alot of people wouldnt get to enjoy their art, and me being big on archiving content i like i decided to start up a blog on archiving their art since they were semi-big in the fairly oddparents fandom on twitter

since ive ran two previous art archive blogs before i made sure to check that nick had been completely inactive and not on any other account, making sure not to post any of their art already on tumblr since the blog was still up at the time and i had planned on saving those as drafts if something happened, and i had set up a small queue on whatever art i could find searching their username on google, and most importantly i let them know in the pinned post that if they wanted this archive taken down then i will 100% take it down

the next day after i made that blog ive noticed i had recieved two dms from nick telling me to take this down, i didnt actually read them fully, all i saw was "may you take this archive down?" and sprinted to deactivate the entire blog (i would be lying if i said i wasnt curious to know how exactly they found the blog, but thats me being nosey someone probably told xem, not very relevant to the conversation)

it wasnt untill i was scrolling through my main blogs post on a tag that ive noticed that they deactivated, and at first i thought that maybe it just showed them as deactivated despite changing their url or something since ive noticed it would sometimes happen, but nope, fully deactivated

i personally, as ive mentioned, wasnt mutuals with xem nor would i have really considered us accuaintences, more of a 'people who happened to be in the same soup isle in the same store' shtick, but they would sometimes send funny replies, i wasnt very big into the ship they were posting at the moment but i liked their art and they had shared some wc crossover art that made me happy since that was my special interest and it was sorta stuck in my head as a special little conversation ive had, and while digging i admitibly got sorta fascinated by masha / sasha in general inspite of the fact ive never watched camp camp before (trying to fight the demons rn)

i hold absoloutly no grudge against nick for telling me i should take it down as they have a right to and i explicitly said in the pinned that i would , i just feel very bad about the fact that ive made them extremely uncomfortable to the point where xe felt like xe had to remove their two only platforms they were active on in general, and again i feel very strongly about preservation of media for others to enjoy and it backfired and now no one gets to enjoy it, including the fact that they had made alot of fanart for a rarepair

Song of the year?

Gosh this is so hard... I mean for most of the year I didn't really even listen to a lot of music, I only got back into listening to music a lot after I started watching YR funnily enough. One song I was absolutely obsessed with though was (still is!) Achilles Come Down by Gang of Youths. And idk, not to be all deep about this, but I love that song for SO many reasons. It was sort of a rediscovery for me this year, I'd listened to it in the past, but I think it only really hit this year. Listening to it for the first time again was such a surreal experience as well, because I'd had this awesome course on existentialism last year (as in 2022) and I was like "wait... is this song..." and then I realized that the french passages in it are quotes from Camus' Mythe de Sisyphe! Of all things! And my mind was instantly blown and I immediately loved the song so so much more than I'd loved it before. And it also feels like it ties up my years so nicely in so many ways, because I wrote a paper that had to do with Camus' existentialism at the beginning of the year which I enjoyed so so much and to re-discover that in a song? <3 But also the fact that I used some lyrics from it for the second fic I wrote for YR which was also the second fic I'd written in YEARS of not doing that at all? Idk, something about that rediscovery of the song being linked to my rediscovery for my love of writing? Feels special, so maybe I'll go with that song :) (sorry for the ramble)

9. Best month for you this year?

Ahhhh, months are so difficult to tell apart in retrospective, everything kinda blends together. I think every month had its special moments but I'm gonna say August because that's when I first watched YR and that kickstarted SO MUCH for me as you might be able to tell lol. Can't believe this little show and the fandom for it had that much of an impact on me already, but they did.

12. Talk about a new friend you made this year

It's not just one, but: the lovely people on here I met through YR.... :) I mean I keep saying it because I'm a bit of a sap, but you guys are so sweet, so welcoming and I've just loved every single conversation I've had with any of you <3

22. Favorite place you visited this year?

Hmmm, I didn't really travel much this year, but I went to Berlin with my bf and a friend of ours and we had the chance to go to a very cute queer bookshop there in a very cute and very queer neighborhood. And idk, just walking those streets where there were pride flags everywhere and people like me existing carelessly... that really touched me. Not something I've ever experienced before in my life, so that memory stuck.

13) I don’t have one for him yet but I plan on looking for some! I already sort of answered how I think he sounds in a reply to a post you made about an ask for Hellström, so I’ll link that after I post this in a reblog

17) did you know that Ossian (his first name) means “stag”? I feel there’s something to say about his character based off that but I haven’t quite decoded it yet. I also get tidal wave vibes when I think of him sometimes, and a color I associate with him is a dark teal.

As for “design” (as to:a is more of an audio drama kind of thing), there isn’t much. I imagine he’s got a very rectangular shape to him I feel? Boxy features. He also looks a bit older than he actually is as well.

20) extra: he has a huge problem with escapism as a coping method, and becomes a huge issue with him later on in the plot. Because of his position as Engineering Chief, he’s supposed to be relied upon by his officers; but as things escalate more and more, he becomes exponentially more distant from the crew, more unattainable and definitely lashes out when he’s in these states if people try to get a hold of him. It even goes as far as people becoming steadily more suspicious of him as time goes on, thinking he’s hiding something from the crew because of his behavior. While not particularly liked in the first place, many become hostile as this suspicion spreads. Yeah. Not a good time

Locke:

1) I really wanted to experiment with psychological shit and Locke just. Popped into my head one day. I wanted someone in the cast of characters to be the outlier among outliers, someone who’s experiences are on a completely different scale from the others, becoming a point of conflict for both him and everyone around him because no one really understands what’s been done to him. Completely without his knowledge that he’s been disgustingly wronged in the first place too. Something like that

6) honestly, I don’t really get a vision of physical appearances for my characters until later on. I conceptualize their place in the story and personality and relationships with others first, and a physical appearance bubbles up along the way. I also take his regional origin into account as well when thinking of appearance, what’s the most common/uncommon in the area when it comes to attributes, any ancestry, things of that nature. The rest is just fun stuff, like the thing about him refusing to tie his hair back and using a bandana instead. I also take health-related factors into account as well. Locke was already pale because of his origins, and it started to become more of a sickly pale, “haven’t seen the sunlight” pale as time goes on. Doesn’t get good sleep either, so he has dark circles around his eyes. Almost always has a migraine, so he just looks angry half the time because he’s dealing with that. Again, not doing too hot at all.

13) no voice claim for him either 😭 I don’t even know what he sounds like to me either not gonna lie

17) the Roman god Janus is something I thought of when coming up with his story. Janus is the GOF of beginnings, gates, transitions, time, duality, doorways, passages, and endings. Janus is practically the embodiment of the necessity of choice and the opposite spectrums of existence (beginning and end) at once. He’s depicted with two faces or heads a lot of the time, which is why in the first place k thought of him when thinking of Locke. Locke has dissociative identity disorder (DID) which causes the presence of multiple “personalities” or “alters” in a single person, which can also cause gaps in memory and seemingly unpredictable mood swings. His mental disorder made him vulnerable, which was used against him before signing onto the Arke mission. I tied this into Janus because of his deal with duality—and the fact that later on in the mission, Locke also gets his head majorly fucked with by the aliens and really scrambles him.

I also mentioned once associating Locke with the purple Janus flower:

20) extra: this is mainly for people who aren’t familiar with Locke, but he had a little sister! They were very close until Locke was kicked out of his home. During his childhood, he had almost solely raised himself and his sister, working some odd jobs with local businesses to make a little extra money until he was legally allowed to get a job. Their guardians didn’t do anything at all really for them, being out of the house most the time. I imagine he developed DID during his adolescence in a response to the neglect he experienced, while also having the pressures for caring for his sister weighing on top of him as well. It definitely fucked him up.

But he loves his sister a lot. They were everything the other had, probably borderline codependent because of it. Locke has a little tattoo on his arm of a doodle that his sister did, getting it just after he got kicked out on an impulse.

KC:

3) her role for sure! I really wanted to make a character who was an alchemist for the mission. It’s such an out-there occupation in the modern day and age so I really wanted to play around with it. As alchemy is considered a pseudoscience, really no one ever took her seriously in her professional life, no one ever believing her either by extension. This is the same case for most of the crew on the Arke. They don’t really know why she’s here, what her actual role is in the mission, and very disbelieving of what she said she does.

This develops further into no one listening to her when she has a concern over one thing or another. She is incredibly intelligent and observational, but her social ineptitude overshadows it greatly, and it definitely effects how people perceive her. She isn’t taken seriously im until way further on when people start realizing that she’s right about a lot of the things they’re running into on the mission.

Hey, just in case people who already have been having a bad time with this meme are retriggered by Francesca Scorcese's TikTok – Goncharov is fake. It doesn't exist. [Edited for further clarity] That is really Martin Scorsese's daughter, that's her real TikTok account, and presumably that is really her father in the chat screenshot she posted. Francesca saw the piece in the NY Times talking about how Tumblr made up a fake movie, sent her Dad the link and asked "Did you see this?" Martin joked back "yes I made that movie years ago." That's all it was, Martin Scorsese himself playing along with our silliness.

PLEASE reblog this and DO NOT TAG IT UNREALITY. "Unreality" is for posts that are keeping up the bit, but info posts, reality-affirming posts and ones talking about the meme as a meme are solidly real. We really haven't been doing a good enough job tagging this properly and protecting neurodivergent people from being gaslit and traumatized. You’re trying to have a normal Monday.

Thursday sucked, Friday you accidentally started dating a psychopath, and your weekend was full of anxious unease over what Monday might bring, given Loki’s latest threat.

Don’t think he meant it as a threat, but “maybe they’ll hire me” seems like a threat to you.

So this Monday, you head into work like normal.

You walk your normal distance, you go to your normal office and dump your stuff, you take your normal route to the break room, see the normal faces around the normal coffee pot and box of donuts.

You’re one sip into your first cup of joe when all the sudden your day starts with a spit take.

Coffee spews everywhere, all over your keys, phone, and ID resting on the counter, all over your freshly washed shirt, and Loki laughs.

He’d only nodded at you across the break room.

Crushing your now-empty cup in your fist, you steel yourself and march right over to the god—the doctor, I suppose, he’s not exactly himself at the moment—grab him by the ear, and drag him out of the room.

“You’re—ow—f-fiesty today, hm?” He’s trying to laugh at you, arms flailing as he scrambles to keep up with you; yeah, people are staring, but they don’t know who this new doctor shmoozing them around the coffee pot really is.

“Shut up,” you hiss, dragging him down the hall and shoving him into your office, slamming the door behind you. “You—you...you little shit.”

“Lovely to see you as well, darling.”

“Don’t—oh my god.”

“That’s me...”

“Why are you here??” Your voice cracks into an agonised wail, much to your dismay.

“I’m at work,” he calmly replies, pulling an ID card out of his suit pocket and waving it in your face. “And I’d appreciate if you let me be, I have patients to see to.”

No.

Your heart plummets and you gape at him, unable to do anything to stop him from turning on his heel and heading right back out the door.

Hired over one single weekend.

“Loki!” You shout and run after him, grabbing him by the collar and yanking him back. “I swear to god I’ll report you, you’re gonna kill someone—”

He whirls around, grabs hold of your arms, and drags you right back to your office—ignoring your rather loud protesting, kicking, and almost a scream for help—stopped in your throat by two nonexistent fingers pinching your tongue again.

The hold on your tongue releases when he pushes you into your office, casting a glance behind him before slamming the door shut.

“I should kill you,” he growls, and in a blink Dr. Laing is gone, the greasy, lanky, weasel of a god standing way too close to you instead. “If that’s the only way to get you to keep your mouth shut, I won’t hesitate—”

You can’t help but gulp.

“P-please don’t,” you whisper, voice betraying you. “I like my life.”

“Do you?” Loki pinches the bridge of his nose with a sigh, eyes shut in obvious annoyance. “Look, I’m attempting to not kill anyone for the next few days, but if you can’t keep quiet...”

“I won’t say anything,” you swear, zipping two fingers over your lips. “I promise, I won’t tell, just let me go—”

Loki frowns, clearly not believing your pleads. “You’re a liability. It would be in my best interests to dispose of you.”

“But what if you didn’t,” you quickly offer, a sheepish smile on your face as you pat his hand—still fisted in your shirt and keeping you pinned to the wall. “J-just stop threatening to kill me and-and I won’t report you.”

His gaze flits from your face down to your hand, tapping the back of his, and he drops you.

Okay, you hadn’t realised he was holding you that high above the ground.

Scrambling to your feet, you stand back up to find yourself face to face with him.

Much too close.

He just narrows his eyes, glancing down at your throat as you swallow hard, squirming under his gaze.

His hands are twitching and with the way he’s watching your neck, you have half a mind to worry he’s about to strangle you—he certainly seems to be considering it.

Don’t back down first. Stand your ground.

You’re about to come at him with a snarky response to this little blackmail agreement when you freeze, eyes nearly rolling back in your head.

Oh my god. What is that smell??

He’s still staring, itching to kill you now, no doubt, but you can’t think straight—the scent clouds your senses and you nearly swoon.

It’s Loki.

It has to be, he’s the only thing close enough to you to be giving off a scent that strong—oh god, it’s good.

Every man in existence should be legally required to smell like this, you decide, fighting to keep yourself standing straight. For a split second, it doesn’t matter that it’s Loki, you’re about ready to hurl yourself at anyone who smells this good—

But he’s seconds away from murdering you in cold blood and seems to have no problem making you his fake little trophy wife for the sake of his escape plan, so...

“You smell awful.”

Might as well make him as uncomfortable as possible, seeing as he’s going to be blackmailing you—with the threat of death—into keeping his secrets.

“I live in a cell,” Loki snarls. “You live in a civilised shelter and actually have frequent access to a bath, yet even still...revolting.”

“You’re a dick, Loki, an absolute dick.”

“Did you...” he blinks a couple times and takes a step away from you, brow furrowed in frustration. “Did you forget that I just threatened to kill you?? You’re already insulting me again, you must be absolutely stupid.”

“I work in a tower full of superheroes,” you say simply. “One of whom is your brother, if I’m not mistaken? So I’d like to see you try.”

You slip past him, sick of sitting there backed against a wall drowning in his revoltingly not-awful scent—behind you, Loki can’t help but bare his teeth and clench his hands into shaking fists, knowing full well you’re right.

Ooh-tbh, Larry from NATM just because I feel like I always make him an asshole? Like, I haven’t published all my fic ideas for NATM because I keep making him really mean? And in some it works but in others I’m like ‘jesus chill Lee he’s just a Dude trying his best’ but also at the same time I feel the way Stiller played him and his character arc means he’s got some major ego to him as the films go on? Idk that isn’t a hot take or anything just me being frustrated with Ben Stiller lol

It hit some personal stuff for me, so to be able to have it work organically in a fic so I could also like, mini therapy session myself? Cool af. Also, ppl seemed to like this a lot too, and while that validation isn’t the only reason I write, it’s always cool when my writing makes ppl happy.

I don’t really have a least favorite, but I do have some I’m more frustrated with, due to how long they took me to write, etc. Currently? The answer to this is my Mark the Date series because A. it is taking me a day and an age to finish it and B. I feel like it kinda flopped, so it’s hard to pull up any energy to finish it, but like...I may as well now lol. I’ll get it done eventually.

I really love alliteration, and for me this line just sums up how it feels to walk thru a city when you aren’t just wandering really, but are looking or waiting for someone, and have that awful yet sometimes good feeling of expecting to hear or see them but it feels like you’re waiting or searching forever and in the meantime the city just lives on around you, a stopped platelet stuck in a vein full of vitality. Like, idk if it hit any of my readers that way, but that’s what I was trying to get across lol, so the line always hits me hard in a good way when I scroll thru my writing tag and see it.

I really love this one idk. Thinking back to how I felt while writing it, how it all flowed in a certain way. The whole experience was just something else, and I’m proud of this one in a certain way I find myself, funnily enough, unable to describe.

Like, y’all gotta understand, I’ve deleted some of it and erased traces of it from my blog, but I’ve written for years on here, I have some stuff on my ao3, and for the longest time I got nothing back, or very nearly nothing. Maybe a few likes, but no comments and not much else. I always just rolled with it and assumed I just wasn’t writing anything good enough to inspire reviews. Idk if that’s true or not, but in any case it means I cherish every comment, like, reblog, and anything review-like in nature because I’m so grateful to have it now, and I know it could well be pure luck that I stumbled up on a really supportive bunch of fandoms with great readers. 

In other words, thank y’all for every kind word and like and reblog and also I may be an immortal feeding off of validation of my art, but we’ll see on that last bit, because I haven’t tested it. 

28. Worst review you ever got?

One from middle school. I’d just finished my very first novel, gave it to a friend to read, and he said it ‘smacked of being too fanciful and childish, something only kids and women would read’ (it was a YA fantasy novel so I mean... what exactly he expected, idk cuz he knew what it was before I gave it to him, like it’s supposed to have those elements as a lot of these sorts of novels/stories do, and that isn’t a bad thing about them at all, so like...what his damage was idek.)

Also this is the same dude who texts me randomly and is really weird abt his friendship with me and happens to be an English teacher now (RIP to his students.) 

Anyway, after he said that I tossed a review right back, because well, middle school and also I was very upset with him because I’d not asked for anything other than a general ‘if you picked this up randomly and started it, would it suck you in enough to keep reading or would you put it down’ like that was literally all I needed him to answer for me. So I told him his latest novel (his second at that point) was essentially just him masturbating to his own opinions (because he’s an arguer, who loves to tell ppl they’re always wrong, and that’s by his own admission) for one hundred pages, and not in a way that anyone else would care to read. He was pissed, but so was I. We didn’t talk for a good week, and we had almost all our classes together lol. 

Like, getting nothing back in review sucks too, but this one has stuck with me forever. Best part? I mentioned it to him a few years back, and he only vaguely remembered it, and followed it with “but I’ve said a lot of rough stuff about your work. I mean, it deserved it at the time, but you might be good at this someday!” 

I didn’t smack him, but I really, really wanted to.

Like, Ahk as a character is captured so well, and I love the way the plot twines and also when the smut comes up? Very good A+ smut, something I value pretty highly on and off Tumblr because man, sometimes smut is just work to write, so I appreciate it when it’s really good. All around, this series has captured my heart and I legit have a link to it saved on multiple devices so if I need something to read, I can just pull it up right away. 

30. Hardest part of writing? 

Self-doubt. It’s the biggest hurdle for any artist, regardless of the art in question I think, but with writing it seems to double down a lot. Like, you have to really get out of your own head, even as you spend all your time there with your writing ideas. Shit gets weird and twisted, man. 

For the longest time, I really let self-doubt defeat me too, and I regret the time I lost to that. I still get hit with it randomly, cause I don’t think it every really goes away for any writer, not even the big names like Stephen King or Neil Gaiman (who I’m half tempted to @ on here purely because I wanna know his feelings on this stuff because I respect and admire him as an artist and his thoughts very much, but also he’s a very busy man so I’m not gonna bug him by doing that lol.) 

All there is to do is to work with it, push past it, and most importantly keep writing. I have days where that feels like the hardest thing, but each day I manage to get past it and get the words down? I let myself feel proud of that, and mark it as an achievement in my Big Book of Stuff I’ve Done in This Life.

Took me a sec to understand your shelving, @insectoid5, bc I saw it from bottom up, left-to-right (you’ll see why in a bit). Though I’m curious why you have Sacrifice at the bottom of the 3rd front column and Inferno at the top of the 4th back column. Wouldn’t it make sense to stack them in columns across the shelf then make another row, instead of stacking columns along the shelf width? (see my pics for a visual) Or better yet, just do simple rows, book spine facing out?

😅  They're arranged EU-chronologically, from oldest to newest: top to bottom, back to front, left to right.  And the front stacks carry to the back of the next column.  (Well, it made sense at the time.)

1.  That’s me & SW, basically. I also have some Guide books (Characters, Droids, Atlas, etc.), but I don’t have the comics. *shrug* Every house has it’s own def’n of Peak [Insert fandom] Media.

2.  As Catrina said, “The thing about [insert fandom] books is that when you start buy[i]ng them, you don’t think you’re collecting. Then you run out of space and, well…” Of course, this just means you must follow Lawrence’s advice: “you need hidden cargo compartments [so] you can add bookshelves to the ceiling.” :P

Isn't that the truth!  First there isn’t enough money for books, then there's not enough space on the shelves for the books (hence the 2-deep stacking), and there's not enough space for bookshelves... 😂

About 87 total. Normally, I stack them across like bookstores because of the stupid space on the right, and how the bottom-most books will start bending due to the weight since the shelf isn’t actually flush with the wall. This results in an arrangement ~22 across (on avg.) and 3 rows deep that completely fills the shelf, so LotF and FotJ go on the next level down by themselves. Which, considering their highly contested status among fans because of what happens, seems somehow appropriate (though IMHO, Dark Nest is where things really start going nuts. It’s a tailspin from there until Mercy Kill.) Despite this large number, there’s 33 books I haven’t read: MedStar [2], The Last Jedi [1], Kenobi [1], Scoundrels [1], all of X-Wing*[10], Thrawn Trilogy* & Duology* [3+2], Vector Prime to Edge of Victory II [5], Dark Journey [1], Destiny’s Way to The Unified Force [3], Vortex to Apocalypse [4])

I haven't read Mercy Kill yet, or Crucible.  I still intend to, eventually.

Side: In your tags, why is Legends in two sets of double quotes? Typo?

Exaggeration, because I don't like the new name, or the way Disney essentially threw the EU out the nearest airlock.  (It's actually four sets of single quotes, since Tumblr doesn't play nice with double quotes in tags.)

* Shush, you. I can feel the judging already. I was raised in the late NJO period, K? I saw few, if any Bantam books in stores, so it may as well have not existed for me. Granted, I wasn’t looking for them: I admit to having had a “SW = Jedi/Sith Only” mentality for a while, thus excluding pilots. BIG mistake; if I LOVED Enemy Lines, why not get other books focusing on fighter pilots?

✖ How has Tumblr RP changed since you started?

// its change a LOT since I started way back when. I think I picked up my first muse early May 2013. Container themes weren’t a thing. In fact custom themes were pretty basic. You had a fuck ton of links on blogs and tagging systems really didn’t exist maybe basic ones line your partner’s name, thread title, maybe headcanons or things we really liked and wanted to save, and then just like random convos in tags. We didn’t have fancy font types or icons\gifs to use during replies. When asks first became rebloggable we did reblog them to continue rps. 

I know people say that RPers were less drama filled but I think the opposite is true. Granted the fandom I started in was super drama-filled. I think people are more chill now mostly and more accepting? But that could just be that I don’t have time for the bullshit and honestly don’t care? idk.

Things have changed yeah, some for the better some for the worst but that’s just life and what happens!

✉ A fandom that you feel is open and accepting?

(part 1) ur gonna roast me for this but im legit curious why mafia AUs are so bad? im asking in a non confrontational way, i get it romanticizing mafia is wrong, but i also believe that 1)most mafia AUs are a really toned down type of mafia;2)they do make for some interesting kinds of dynamics with fanart and with fics; 3)in a fic specifically u can create your own world and call something mafia and still make it so they don't kill innocent people but only idk members of other gangs or sth

okay, so, let’s have it out of the way: I have nothing against mob aus or crime aus. I have a problem against calling them mafia AUs because in the US mafia = organized crime at large, in Italy mafia = ACTUAL EXISTING ORGANIZATIONS THAT ARE ACTIVELY HARMFUL. now that I introduced the topic I’ll c/p you the reply I gave to another anon who while discussing the issue pointed out that most writers don’t even know Italian mafia is a thing, which is pretty much on the same discourse so...

*The thing is - in the US it might not be enough of a deal anymore and I honestly do get why people make the mafia = regular mobsters, since the mafia was the first foreign organized crime being exported to the US via italian immigrants (sorry if this sounds horrible in English but I just woke up and I still didn’t have coffee) so I understand that mafia became the umbrella term.But the thing is that - as you said, these people don’t even know that there’s a mafia in Italy anymore or where the word comes from.

 I’m going to link to italiansreclaimingitaly’s tag about the mafia and its perception outside Italy because they posted about this extensively and it’s an excellent resource, but meanwhile I’m gonna do a very short bullet point list and about the topic:

Mafia might not be a big deal in the US, but it still is here. We have the beauty of four different mafias (Cosa Nostra - the Sicilian one, camorra which is the one in Campania but has tendrils spread everywhere, the 'ndrangheta which is in Calabria and the Sacra Corona Unita in Puglia) which are all active [especially camorra and 'ndrangheta] and whose actions have direct impact (negative) on our economy and on our society. Actually mafias are one of the main reasons we’re currently economically fucked up, and if I start talking about how mafia culture keeps some areas literally backwards I could talk about it for three months.

There are still people who are killed for standing up against them. These days the most prominent personality is Roberto Saviano who is a writer who dared to put together a book documenting minutely the way camorra works and he’s been living under protection for years by this point. Like, they want him dead because he wrote a book. And I’m sorta sure that he was talking about leaving Italy and going to the US after years of sticking with it here because he can’t take it anymore but I don’t know if it was a taken decision or if it’s still debating it.

It wasn’t even thirty years ago that we had the stragi di mafia - in english it’d be something like the mafia slaughters, basically around the beginning of the nineties there were a number of bombs planted by the mafia targeting people who were trying to oppose it including judges Falcone and Borsellino, actually the anniversary of Falcone’s death is like... tomorrow. And they’ve killed people for way longer than that. Here is a list of only Cosa Nostra victims including the ones from the eighties/nineties. And people are still dying because of it. The slaughters I’m referring to are just the ones in the nineties which are enough of a number.

They also perpetuate a culture where if you testify against your mafia-employed relatives you’ll be shunned forever. There are women who testified against their families and couldn’t see their children anymore never mind that they weren’t automatically considered a relative anymore the moment they sided against the mafia. Some people have committed suicide after becoming witnesses also because our police force/justice system can be terribly non-supportive in this kind of situation so they got left on their own. Never mind that back in the day - it was the beginning of the nineties? - I recall at least a particular story of - I think, correct me if I remember wrong but I can’t remember the names for the life of me - where this guy testified against the local mafia when he either used to work for them or was forced to pay them the pizzo and in retaliation his six-year old (or five? Anyway he had a son younger than ten for sure) got kidnapped, killed and thrown into acid to dispose of the body. That happened in what, 1993? 1994? It’s pretty much yesterday. And now the camorra is doing the same - there’s a list here of camorra victims among which accidental passerbys that got killed because they were in the way which I can tell just by glancing is not complete. And I’m not even going into the 'ndrangheta. That is to say, here mafia still kills people and cripples our country.

Now, I get that it’s a word, but the point was: let’s say that instead of the Italians the Japanese came to the US first and the umbrella word for organized crime was yakuza rather than mafia and let’s say yakuza was still what it was originally in Japan while in the US it stopped being a big deal and people write yakuza!AU instead of mafia AU. Let’s say someone Japanese gets angry at that and goes like 'listen the yakuza is a real deal it does this this this and that and it’s a plague in our country so can you please at least look it up before writing your fanfic’, which is what had happened way back then when this whole mafia and fanfic thing blew up. A bunch of people told us to get over it because it’s just a word and if it’s a problem in Italy it’s not in the US so why should they care? Now, if we had been Japanese (or Chinese or Russian or Mexican) would they have said the same thing? Considering the general tumblr attitude I’m pretty sure they would have received either an apology or 'this is an important deal let’s keep that in mind’ with signal boost reblogs and stuff. 

It’s the fact that we should get over people not knowing that it’s still a real problem for us and that they can’t take five seconds to google it that is the problem imo. Especially when instead of mafia au you can just say mobsters au or tag it as organized crime and everyone is a lot happier, mostly because as the tag above explains romanticising the mafia is a good thing for them because it means they can act outside Italy with less stigma because everyone thinks that the mafia is dead or not relevant anymore, if I’m explaining myself. (And it’s active outside Italy - like, there was a mafia kill in Germany in 2007 where six people died (sorry the link is in Italian but there isn’t an English wiki page, if you look the city up you’ll find something probably) and it was because of the 'ndrangheta.

I’d really like to not get worked over it because it meant it was a thing of the past y'know, but the problem is that it isn’t and I’d rather spread some awareness in hope some of these writers look it up (because it’s a good thing that people know what mafia is since as stated they have tendrils everywhere - if you read Saviano’s book the entire first chapter is about how camorra regularly deals with Chinese import/export in Italy for one) than shrug and figure that since they’ll think everything is good for fanfic then it’s not even worth my time.*

but the shit above is not exploring things we wouldn’t/writing darkfic, it’s THINKING THAT A CRIMINAL ORGANIZATION WHICH IS STILL A THING IN OUR PART OF THE WORLD IS CUTE AND ADORABLE. and that only plays in their favor because it takes the bad aura out of the word and we really should not let that happen. like. that is what is bad about mafia aus and mafia discourse, that people don’t realize the mafia is alive and well and thriving and not a thing that doesn’t exist or a generic word for organized crime.
