My RTC Production Idea
I have spent the whole of today and all of last night making these moodboards this idea is the only thing I have thought about for the past 24 hours and HERE IT IS
Disclaimer: This is not intended to be realistic I have zero knowledge of theatre or anything really and this is all coming from my imagination. Also this isn't how I imagine all of the characters when I write fics this is just how I picture them for this specific production idea :D
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I honestly have no clue if I've missed anything I've been staring at these boards for so long I'm losing my mind but I would LOVE to answer questions and talk about this I have so many thoughts :D

🎶 H/D Wireless Art 🎶
📻 Stuck on the Bridge Between Us (G)
🎵 Song prompt: Talk Me Down by Troye Sivan
🎵 Summary: finding the courage within themselves to be vulnerable, so they can stop hurting the other and start loving each other as they so deeply want and need to
📻  So Let's Dance, Take a Chance, Understand Me (T)
🎵 Song prompt: T.Rex, Get It On
🎵 Summary: The War is over and everything has changed.
After a few of years of travelling around the world, Harry decided to move to Muggle London, looking for peace and a place where the scar on his forehead doesn’t have a meaning. His new flat is in a perfectly normal neighbourhood close to the centre, quiet during the day but full of students at night. He really likes the small bar down the road, a place that serves cheap, awful drinks and plays good old classics. It’s always crammed with people talking, laughing or dancing along with the riff of electric guitars. From the first time he crossed the threshold, Harry thought it was perfect, the right mix of noise and warmth to be alone without feeling alone. Just what he needed. He couldn’t imagine that someone else was there for the very same reason, looking for a place where the Dark Mark was only a tattoo. Blame it on the alcohol, on the music or whatever you want, but when Harry’s eyes landed on Draco’s slim figure, swaying on the dancefloor, something warm and inexplicable possessed him.
📻  The Pass (T)
🎵 Song prompt: Prompt 98: The Pass, by Rush
🎵 Summary: Draco, lost in darkness, seeks a guiding light.
📻  If you knew… (T)
🎵 Song prompt: Young Folks from Peter Bjorn and John
🎵 Summary: The war had left scars on all of them. Some were obvious. Some only if they looked closely. But the worst ones were those they couldn't see. Those that were hidden inside.
📻  an ode to the boy i love (G)
🎵 Song prompt: Animal - Troye Sivan
🎵 Summary: an evocation of vulnerability, trust and tenderness
📻  Home Sweet Home (G)
🎵Song prompt: Radioactive - Imagine Dragons
🎵 Summary: In the middle of a Zombie apocalypse Harry made it his main goal to find a safe home for Draco and himself.
📻  Turn back time (T)
🎵 Song prompt: If I Could Turn Back Time - Cher
🎵 Summary: Draco's had a rough few years, if that's what you call falling in with a bad lot, attempted murder and a close brush with death. Now facing the weight of his misdeeds, Draco tries to pinpoint when it all went wrong.
📻  Time to Get Out (T)
🎵 Song prompt: My House - PVRIS
🎵 Summary: A few years post-war, Pansy convinces Draco to go on a night out at a muggle club. They run into some familiar faces.
🎶 H/D Wireless Art and Fic 🎶
📻  A Different Kind of Meaning (E, 17k)
🎵 Song prompt: Outnumbered - Dermot Kennedy
🎵 Summary: The ceiling doesn't hold any answers, but there are cobwebs scattered across the corners with shadows tangled in their threads. The rug against his back is rough and scratchy, threadbare and devoid of colours other than various shades of brown. Harry takes it all in, absorbs the dingy and depressed state of his home. There's a pointed moment of decision, a note about to be played, a silence about to end, and then he rolls to his feet and sets to cleaning.
It's the first constructive thing he's done in years.
📻  Keep Holding On (M, 33k)
🎵 Song prompt: Welshly Arms - Sanctuary
🎵 Summary: After the Battle of Hogwarts, Harry and Draco both fall into their own battles with their mental states. Draco is sent to Azkaban, and Harry turns to drinking, hoping to forget.
Months later, Harry visits St Mungo’s new ward on request of a friend, only to find Draco in a deep vegetative state.
Not willing to give him up, Harry stays by his side, while simultaneously dealing with the Ministry's newest grand idea to make everything worse.
Making new alleys, and losing old ones on the way, would hopefully be worth it in the end.
📻 Fic : Modern Love (E, 61k)
📻 Art : Our Love Song (G)
🎵 Song prompt: Modern Love by David Bowie
🎵 Fic summary: Harry Potter, of all people, knows that life isn’t always fair. And no one gets to be happy all of the time. But surely there’s something more—something better—than a rubbish Ministry job, and a lonely old house, and that feeling that everyone out there is doing a better job of living than Harry is.
And it really doesn’t seem fair that Draco Malfoy is back in Harry’s life, all of a sudden, and even though he’s wandless, and living with Muggles, and making his mother cry with his lifestyle choices, he’s happy. So what's he doing right, that Harry isn’t?
Because things don’t really change, do they? And if Harry can’t be happy, he’ll settle for a good night’s sleep, some posh antiques, and the opportunity to find out what Malfoy has been up to for all these years.
And that’s what starts it all.
🎵 Art summary: Harry and Draco enjoying a Sunday morning bus ride in London.
📻  For the Thousandth Time (T, 14k)
🎵 Song Prompt: Lucky by Aurora
🎵 Summary: When Draco's wand refuses to work after the war, he turns to Harry for help.
📻 Fic : Returning Tides (E, 24.5k)
📻 Art : Love Will Tear Us Apart (G)
🎵 Song prompt: Love Will Tear Us Apart by Joy Division
🎵 Fic summary: Is my timing that flawed? Our respect run so dry? Yet there's still this appeal That we've kept through our lives
🎵 Art summary: Art piece to accompany the fic ‘Returning Tides’, based on the song claim, 'Love Will Tear Us Apart' by Joy Division ***** Harry's brooding while straddling a motorbike. Need I say more?
📻  That Sweet Sweet Craving (E, 33.2k)
🎵 Song prompt: Bleeding Out by Imagine Dragons
🎵 Summary: Harry is miserable living a lie because he thinks being a gay role model is wrong. Fake dates raising money for a charity that ends up putting him in a situation he had never expected. Draco Malfoy appears back in his life by some odd chance trying to flip his world upside down and he isn't sure it's a good thing. Malfoy always worked that way to him. Mental health issues, sex, escaping, and that sweet sweet craving of happiness.
🎶 H/D Wireless Fic 🎶
📻  Follow the Water (T, 38.2k)
🎵 Song prompt: “Follow the Water” by Calexico/Iron & Wine
🎵 Summary: Harry Potter’s life is fine. Maybe a little dull and predictable, but he shouldn’t complain about that, right? When he unexpectedly finds himself at Luna’s house one afternoon, Harry gets invited to join the secret wonderland that she’s creating with a surprising group of friends. Maybe a summer outdoors is just what a former hero needs to bring some zest back into his life.
📻  Life goes not backward (T, 8.8k)
🎵 Song prompt: Daughter by Loudon Wainwright
🎵 Summary: Harry still isn’t used to gifts, but this one is different.
A story of coming home, finding safe ground, and the wild courage of putting down roots.
Leaving one life behind isn’t always a sacrifice, and sometimes the greatest good comes from embracing the people you love.
📻  The Way We Used To Love (E, 5.3k)
🎵 Song prompt: 'Used to Love' by Martin Garrix & Dean Lewis
🎵 Summary: Is there hope when what is not enough for the one happens to be too much for the other?
📻  but if you close your eyes (T, 3.3k)
🎵 Song prompt: Pompeii by Bastille
🎵 Summary: The New Magic Order is trying to take over Wizarding Britain. They're not the Death Eaters, but they're not any better either.
The lines of alliance have shifted, but Harry is still on the front lines working tirelessly to stop them.
📻  Haunt the corner of my eye (T, 23k)
🎵 Song prompt: Echoes of You - Marianas Trench
🎵 Summary: Harry’s life is very much on track. After a successful career as an Auror, he’s set to become the youngest ever Minister for Magic. But strange things are starting to happen at Grimmauld Place. Items he doesn’t recognise are appearing left and right, and somehow he never feels quite alone. There’s only one thing Harry knows for sure: it has something to do with Draco Malfoy.
📻  Lookalike (M, 1.4k)
🎵 Song prompt: 'Lookalike' by Conan Gray
🎵 Summary: When you look in his eyes, Do you think of mine? And when you look at that smile, Do I cross your mind? I know in your head You see me instead 'Cause he looks a lot like I did back then Baby, don't lie, He's just a lookalike... ©
📻  Now that the spring is in the air (T, 5.7k)
🎵 Song prompt: Seasons in the Sun by Westlife
🎵 Summary: A surprise attack in Diagon Alley leaves Draco struggling to make peace with the fact that he won't live long enough to experience his own wedding.
📻  Seven Days to Monday (M, 11.7k)
🎵 Song prompt: Say Something - A Great Big World
🎵 Summary: There are seven days before Harry has to meet Draco for the final signing of their divorce papers. It's been months and the surprise at finding nothing but more cold sheets and an empty pillow next to him still catches Harry unaware. He doesn't know where they go from here. Whether it's possible to go anywhere after everything that's happened between them.
📻  Blond Brew (E, 30.4k)
🎵 Song prompt: “Blondes” by Waterparks
🎵 Summary: A blond roast with soy milk makes Draco's morning, but a pair of green eyes makes his week.
📻  A Series of Nonsensical Events (T, 12.8k)
🎵 Song prompt: My Gospel by Charlie Puth
🎵 Summary: Malfoy is up to something. When Harry and the other Aurors are called into a Gringotts break-in and find him the culprit, Harry’s at a total loss. But things only get weirder from then on.
📻  Ignore the Truth (E, 2.6k)
🎵 Song prompt: Dangerously - Charlie Puth
🎵 Summary: "Longtime on-again-off-again lovers Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy were caught in a compromising position in one the Ministry's lifts yesterday evening. While fans of the couple are optimistic, there's still doubt as to whether or not this particular reconciliation will last. When asked directly about the nature of his relationship with Draco Malfoy, the Boy Who Lived had simply this to say, 'Fuck right off, we're busy.'"
- The Daily Prophet, "Love Is In The Air," 28th Oct. 2005.
📻  Your Daddy Knows (You're A Flame) (E, 27.8k)
🎵 Song prompt: Babyfather by Sade (2010)
🎵 Summary: It's just over a week until Draco's twenty-fifth birthday party and Harry Potter is a busy wizard. Amongst all the excitements of fatherhood, work and friends, Harry realises something special about his husband Draco. He is pregnant with their second, much wanted baby.
There's only one problem: Draco is entirely oblivious to the fact and seems determined to remain so.
📻  Don't search me in here (E, 6.7k)
🎵 Song prompt: Gone - Charlie XCX & Christine and the Queens
🎵 Summary: Draco spotted him in a corner, crowded by Ministry employees. He looked like an animal, trapped in a cage. He had a strained smile on his , and his eyes were looking everywhere else than on the people in front of him.
Draco can’t quite help himself, watching Potter from afar. Just out of curiosity, of course. He’s happy with his life, nothing is missing, and if he’s lonely it’s entirely by choice.
📻  I Can Be Your Lighthouse (T, 4k)
🎵 Song prompt: The Lighthouse by The Used
🎵 Summary: When Harry gets called to investigate reports of Dark magic, the last thing he expects to find is an almost unconscious Draco Malfoy. After multiple instances, he resolves to find out what's going on.
📻  Drop Everything Now (T, 21k)
🎵 Song prompt: Sparks Fly by Taylor Swift
🎵 Summary: After accidentally bonding himself to Malfoy, Harry finds himself in an utterly precarious situation…
📻  No one fucks with us (T, 3.3k)
🎵 Song prompt: NFWMB by Hozier
🎵 Summary: Draco Malfoy wonders for how long has Harry Potter been a terrifying force of nature. Harry Potter thinks Draco Malfoy has been a badass MF all along. If the world has to end so they can have some peace and quiet, be it. They'll set it on fire.
📻  Will You Stay with Me? (M, 10.2k)
🎵 Song prompt: ‘Run’ - Daughter
🎵 Summary: Ten months ago, Draco had found none other than Harry Potter blindly drunk and bleeding outside a Muggle pub. He'd brought him home and hasn't left his side ever since. He looked after him, took care of him when yet another nightmare plagued him.
Harry is sure that Draco will leave him at some point, and he can’t let it happen. He can’t have another person leaving his life unexpectedly. So, Harry forces him to leave — after they spend one last night together.
📻  until the sun has changed the colour of my hair (T, 4.9k)
🎵 Song prompt: Jag saknar dig mindre och mindre - Melissa Horn
🎵 Summary:  Draco's life has been one big mess ever since Potter broke up with him. He doesn't want to see his friends, he's too ashamed to see his parents, and his apartment is one giant mess. He's constantly prepared for disaster, and spends his time either alone in Muggle parks or in his apartment. But one day... One beautiful day... He will forget Harry, surely.
📻  Love Found (E, 7.5k)
🎵 Song Prompt: I Found, by Amber Run
🎵 Summary: During Harry’s sixth year, Draco Malfoy joins the Order as a double-agent and continues with his task to get the Death Eaters into the castle as assigned by Voldemort. Draco succeeds with his mission the evening Harry returns from the caves with Dumbledore. The boys reunite on the Astronomy Tower and, with the Death Eater’s arrival, are forced to engage in a fight, driving Harry to come to terms with his feelings about true friendship and romantic love.
📻  On the Third Day He Took Me to the River (M, 14.4k)
🎵 Song prompt: 'Where the Wild Roses Grow - Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds ft. Kylie Minogue'
🎵 Summary: This is a story of two lonely young men falling in love.
This is a story about dreams and duty, about witches that give purpose to the one and doom the other.
You think you know how the story goes, but this is a different story, and it doesn't end well.
📻  (When They Only Hear You Whisper) I'll Be Loud For You (T, 2.8k)
🎵 Song prompt: There for You - Martin Garrix/Troye Sivan
🎵 Summary: Potter must have been having nightmares again. He was restless in his bed across the room. Moonlight shone through his open bed curtains and highlighted the contours of his body, the grimace on his face blatant. His thick blanket was kicked down, one leg still covered by his twisted sheet, the musk of his sweat pungent in their small dorm. Low grunts accounted for the majority of the noise he made, but it was peppered by the occasional groan or unclear shout of words. However, ‘No,’ was always clear. Draco hated it.
📻  The Interview (T, 17.3k)
🎵 Song prompt: Just Say Yes - Snow Patrol
🎵 Summary: One interview had Draco realizing how naïve he was for thinking he deserved Harry.
📻  As Fascinating As a Slap Bracelet (T, 13.2k)
🎵 Song prompt: Have It All - Jason Mraz
🎵 Summary: Who would have thought that a wacky little Muggle toy would lead to an unlikely friendship between Harry and Draco? Not Harry, certainly.
Who would have thought that this friendship would bloom into something more? Well, Ron, for one.
📻  If Sex Is the Drug, Then What Is the Cost (E, 3.8k)
🎵 Song prompt: I Almost Told You That I Loved You - Papa Roach
🎵 Summary: For quite some time, Harry has been seeing Malfoy. Well... Actually, he's hired Malfoy, to keep him company, in his bedroom. It's only sex — honestly — and since Malfoy is the best, he's the only person Harry wants. That's all it is, right?
📻  I Grow Fonder Every Day (M, 21.6k)
🎵 Song prompt: One and Only by Adele
🎵 Summary: Draco still doesn’t know if it’s a blessing or a curse, sharing a flat in Muggle London with Harry Potter.
It’s all Draco’s ever wanted — more than he’d ever wished for. And if it entails suppressing his inconvenient feelings for the man, so what? He’s perfectly happy with his life as it is, perfectly content with just having Potter close and enjoying his company.
That is, until one Friday evening at the beginning of April when the end starts.
📻  How Can I Live Without you? (G, 2.2k)
🎵 Song prompt: "So Far Away", by Avenged Sevenfold
🎵 Summary: After Draco's death, Harry wonders how can he live without the one he loves when he's so far away.
📻  Following the Arrow to Your Heart (E, 10.9k)
🎵 Song prompt: Give Me Love by Ed Sheeran
🎵 Summary: After the war, Draco is recruited into the Department of Love (aka Cupid's Arrow). His job is to bring together witches and wizards whose magical signatures are only compatible with each others' (essentially soulmates). As they all learned during training, Cupids are chosen because they do not have soulmates.
Six years later, Draco's convinced himself that he's perfectly fine with not having a soulmate. But his latest client turns out to be Harry Potter, and he's forced to reconsider in light of his old feelings.
📻  cos I only need your name to call the reasons why I fought (T, 6.6k)
🎵 Song prompt: War, by Poets of the Fall
🎵 Summary: Ron and Hermione leave the Horcrux hunt, leaving a hurt Harry behind.
But at least Draco is still there with him.
📻  Madness (M, 10k)
🎵 Song prompt: House of Fun by Madness
🎵 Summary: A desperate search for contraception all around Diagon Alley.
📻  Between Myth and Man (E, 16.2k)
🎵 Song prompt: Why'd you only call me when you're high? - Arctic Monkeys
🎵 Summary: Draco, lost and a little broken, navigates post-war reality convinced that people like him should not be allowed to make their own choices. To solve the problem of his self-sabotaging tendencies, he starts taking a few drops of Veritaserum every morning.
A story about the complexity of choices, repressed desires that come to the surface when we least expect them, and the utter hopelessness of truths built on a foundation of lies.
📻  stay awhile (stay here with me) (T, 3.1k)
🎵 Song prompt: I like me better - Lauv
🎵 Summary: "Then when?" Harry tries again. He's not sure if he really wants to see the photo or if he just wants to keep talking to Malfoy. This Malfoy, who is so different from what he was expecting. In his Muggle jeans and smartly pressed sweater, with an air of vulnerability around him that Harry isn't used to seeing, Malfoy looks approachable in a way he never has before.
Harry stops his fidgeting as Malfoy looks up to meet his eyes. Through the hum of the crowded pub, he has to strain a little to hear him. "Maybe," Malfoy starts, hesitating a little but never breaking eye contact, "one day?"
📻  All it needs is messing it up and stars (G, 5.9k)
🎵 Song prompt: Tongue Tied by Faber Drive
🎵 Summary: After the war all the Malfoy's came off with light sentences. Now during 8th year Draco is finally free to be himself and date his crush; Harry Potter. Or at least so he thought..
A letter from his father rips that happiness away.
But maybe in the end it will take just a bit of messing up and some stars to get that happiness back.
📻  I'm gonna let it happen (E, 12.3k)
🎵 Song prompt: Florence + The Machine - Shake it out
🎵 Summary: And I'm damned if I do and I'm damned if I don't So here's to drinks in the dark at the end of my road And I'm ready to suffer and I'm ready to hope It's a shot in the dark and right at my throat 'Cause looking for heaven, found the devil in me Looking for heaven, for the devil in me Well what the hell I'm gonna let it happen to me
📻  I feel it in my bones (M, 6.3k)
🎵 Song prompt: Radioactive - Imagine Dragons
🎵 Summary: Harry’s heartbeat is loud in his ears as his heart pounds in his chest. His lungs burn as he pants for air. His legs are screaming in protests as he continues to push them to their limit, forcing himself to run ever faster.
📻  Born in the U.S.A. (M, 9k)
🎵 Song prompt: I'm on Fire by Bruce Springsteen
🎵 Summary: “You need to come home, Draco.” “What? Why? What’s wrong?” “Nothing’s wrong, I just have an opportunity for you, and you need to come home to take it.” When Draco's mother insists he comes home, he drags his feet and convinces his friends to take a road trip.
📻  just tell me when it's alright (E, 23k)
🎵 Song prompt: Teeth, Lady Gaga
🎵 Summary: Harry’s been fighting tooth and nail for any bit of normalcy he can get his hands on. He’s sick of feeling like something’s wrong with him, tired of feeling different. He thinks he’s finally gotten to the root of it, and has settled into a routine that makes him happy. Naturally, that’s when Draco Malfoy walks back into his life and upends it once again. Has Harry bitten off more than he can chew with his former rival?
📻  The Courting by the Pureblood Who Only Has Five Milligrams of Romantic Intelligence and Thinks He’s Real Smooth (T, 19.4k)
🎵 Song prompt: Cupid - Amy Winehouse
🎵 Summary: Draco could grab Potter and shove him into a stall before proceeding to suck his soul out of his dick, but secretly, deep down, in the part of Draco that he will never admit to anyone, he is (everyone pauses to shudder) a romantic. Potter is not someone Draco wants a one-off with. Potter is — Draco’s beloved!
So Draco decides to boldly go where no one has gone before: to put himself through scrutiny; their friends’ teasing and pranks; unsound romantic advice from a house-elf; wearing pretty clothes; all to try and win Potter’s heart through courtship.
(An unnamed ginger bastard can be heard yelling from afar: “This is actually a detailed guide on how not to court someone!”)
But who cares about the opinions of redheads? Literally no one.
📻  What Will We Do With a Drunken Harry? (E, 4.9k)
🎵 Song prompt: "Drunken Sailor" by The Irish Rovers
🎵 Summary: A victorious Quidditch match, a claimed Quidditch Cup, and a wild House party can mean only one thing. Will the aftermath lead to one excruciating hangover in the morning, or will it perhaps lead to something more?
📻  Though Your World Is Changing, I Will Be The Same (E, 15.9k)
🎵 Song prompt: Slave To Love by Bryan Ferry
🎵 Summary: “I shower after work,” Harry had told him once when Draco had asked what cologne had such longevity as to be effective after a full day of gruelling Auror work.
“For me?” Draco had asked. Teased, just a little. There had been a smile lingering on the edges of his consciousness, threatening to traipse onto his mouth.
“For Ginny,” Harry had said, voice flat. “She hates it when I come back sweaty and crackling with other people’s hexes. Did you know magic has a smell? I didn’t until she told me.” – It's all fun and games, till somebody falls in love. Given his luck, it's obviously Draco who has to go and do it.
📻  I Can't Help Falling in Love with You (NR, 4.8k)
🎵 Song prompt: I can't help falling in love with you - Elvis Presley
🎵 Summary: Harry stood up and set his hand out to Draco. “Dance?” “I didn’t know you danced, Potter.” “Hm, I’ve danced a lot in my time," Harry replied smugly. “How do I know you won’t step on my feet?” “You don’t, but I think the risk will be worth it.”
📻  Searching For a Place to Hide (T, 12.5k)
🎵 Song prompt: Love Will Keep Us Alive - The Eagles
🎵 Summary: After the war, there were threats against the Malfoys. Needing them kept safe until the trials are over, the Ministry puts them in protective custody but a murder attempt proves there’s a Ministry leak. Desperate, the Ministry decides a safe house is best, but who to trust to keep it secret and keep them safe? Narcissa calls in a life debt, the Minster calls in a favour and Harry Potter wonders why his life continues to hate him.
Along the way, the Malfoys learn how to be a family again, Harry learns that some things are not how he thought and maybe never were, and the touch-starved boys discover that they may be each other's forever answer.
📻  Isolated Thunderstorms and Scattered Showers (T, 21.3k)
🎵 Song prompt: Iris - the GooGoo Dolls
🎵 Summary: Post-war, Harry needs space. Everything is too much all at once, and time and time again, he finds himself pulling the invisibility cloak over his head, just for a bit of peace.
Returning for eighth year is hard, especially when you're considered a war hero, and your name is Harry James Potter. It's just that things go a little wonky when Harry starts following Malfoy, and finds that he can't (or doesn't want to) stop.
📻  Kiss It Better (E, 1.5k)
🎵 Song prompt: Kiss It Better by Rihanna
🎵 Summary: When Harry's injured, Draco knows there's no place he'd rather be than by his side.
📻  (shut up and) dance with me (T, 7.9k)
🎵 Song prompt: Shut Up and Dance - Walk the Moon
🎵 Summary: Four dances Harry and Draco share.
📻  In Love with the Ferret (E, 21.9k)
🎵 Song prompt: I'm Yours by Jason Mraz
🎵 Summary: Harry has never been the most observant bloke. Sometimes to the point of him not realising his feelings for a particular pointy, pale git. And it's not his fault if literally everyone else knows about said feelings except for Harry and the git in question. So it's really not his fault, when faced with the scope of his feelings, he suddenly has a hard time talking to one Draco Malfoy. Or looking him in the eye. Or not being a total weirdo around him.
There's nothing to do but take the advice of his friends and try to woo Draco over dinners with friends, Ministry cases, and an unfortunately named Italian restaurant.
Harry just can't stop the flutter in his chest when he sees Draco smile.
📻  Dance with me? (M, 8.2k)
🎵 Song prompt: I Wanna Dance With Somebody - Whitney Houston
🎵 Summary: Draco had given up on love, until one day sitting outside the usual gaudy cafe he frequented 'people watching' he spotted Harry Potter lurking, a suspicious Draco investigates and a series of events ensue.
📻  The Cupid Incident (E, 12.6k)
🎵 Song prompt: Can' Get You out of My Head - Kylie Minogue
🎵 Summary: Draco gets into the way of a potions attack and can't get Potter out of his head.
📻  Carouse (E, 19.9k)
🎵 Song prompt: Dead by Madison Beer
🎵 Summary: Carouse (verb): To drink plentiful amounts of alcohol and enjoy oneself with others in a noisy, lively way.
Harry finds himself using alcohol in increasingly dangerous ways to cope with the stresses of life. When he is put on leave from work to sort out his issue, he instead falls head first into a lively club scene where he can drink and fuck his worries away. That is, until a certain blond from his past reappears and throws off his entire routine.
Again, thank you to everyone who’s been involved this year, and there’s still time to get out on the dancefloor before the final reveals (although of course the dancefloor will always be open in your heart and in processor of your chose electronic device)

all the odd ones for the fic questions pls and thank you pepster
all the odd ones, meaning 1, 3 etc right? oh BOY are we gonna be here for a while (and i love it 🥰)
it’s morning right now so let’s see how long throughout the day this is gonna take me sdfghjk let’s do it!!
1) what was the first fandom you got involved in?
hmmmm. i wanna say harry potter, more than a decade ago? specifically dramione and scorose
3) what is the best fandom you’ve been involved in?
for all that it has given me i have to say bechloe
5) which fandoms have you written fanfiction for?
so far just for bechloe
7) list your NoTPs from each fandom you’ve been in
i’m only gonna list pairs i have strong feelings against and from only the fandoms i’ve been most involved in
harry potter: snape and hermione
frozen: elsa and hans (no but for real. why)
pitch perfect: beca and jessie, chloe and chicago
marvel: hm hm surprisingly nothing comes to mind
the haunting of bly manor: same as for marvel
9) what are the best things about your current fandom?
having a space where i can fully be myself, expressing myself freely through my writing, meeting so many wonderful people, having a previously unexplored side of myself revealed to me, finding and delving into characters that make me feel less alone, and so much more. it’s been a real blessing, having this fandom in my life
11) who is your current OTP?
bechloe
(this was the point where tumblr lost me ALL MY ANSWERS FROM QUESTIONS 13 TO 33 so let’s do this again SHALL WE??? i’ll be saving each answer as we go dear god)
13) any NoTPs?
already answered!
15) is there an obscure ship which you love?
hmm i don’t think so? none that comes to mind at least
17) who was your first OTP and are they still your favorite?
my first OTP, before i even knew what an OTP was, was scorpius and rose from harry potter. it’s not still on top of my OTP list, but always has a special place in my heart
19) is there a ship which you wished you could get behind, but you just don’t feel them?
not really? i mean, there are popular ships that i don’t support, like hermione with bellatrix or natasha with wanda for example. i can see their appeal and i get why people like them. they’re just not for me and i’m okay with that
21) what was the first fanfic you ever wrote?
ah my accidental multi chap baby sdfghjkdfg
All is Fair in Love and War was posted as an one shot, and that was all it was supposed to be. it was my first finished written piece. and then a couple of people in the comments were really nice abt sharing thoughts of where the story could go next and what they’d like to see happen, and they were very enthusiastic abt wanting to see more of that story. so the second chapter was born
sooo one thing led to the other and before i knew it that fic had become an 8 chapter, over 60k words story sdfghjkdf i’m amused and grateful to this day
23) name a fic you’ve written that you’re especially fond of and explain why you like it
how can you ask a mother to pick her favorite of her kids HUH
no but for real, i love all of my stories equally. i’m a perfectionist, so nothing gets posted before it’s perfect in my eyes. plus, all my stories are my babies. each has its flaws and imperfections, each in their own ways. but they’re all beautiful and meaningful to me
what i will say is, i have a particular soft spot for (wondering if you knew) i was enchanted to meet you. i truly think my writing peaked in that story, in all the parallels and tiny but very important things that are in there
25) what’s your most popular fanfic?
based on views and kudos, it’s All is fair in Love and War
ofc that’s a multi chap, so maybe the numbers aren’t exactly equivalent to popularity
my most popular one shot, by a very large margin at that, is (i’ll let you in) and baby, that’s when
27) what do you hate more: coming up with titles or writing summaries?
i honestly love coming up with titles
writing summaries, on the other hand, is the bane of my existence
29) do you have a beta reader? why/why not?
i don’t, and it’s bc i’m literally incapable of taking any kind of critique over anything unfinished. once it’s posted and out in the world it’s fair game; but until then? that’s a big no for me
31) what’s the nicest thing anyone has ever said about your writing?
i honestly can’t answer this question bc every comment is so so special and important to me. i often go back and read them all. even right now while writing this there are so many different comments swirling around in my head. i appreciate and am grateful for all the kind words always 💜
33) do you write one shots, multi chapters, or huge epics?
sdfghjkk definitely not huge epics
i’ve written both of the other two. in the beginning i preferred and wanted to write multi chapters. however nowadays and for the past year or so, i lean more heavily towards one shots
35) do you write drabbles? if so, what do you normally write them about?
i am physically and mentally incapable of writing short things sdfghjkd so no, i don’t write drabbles
37) first person or third person? what do you write in and why?
always third person. idk the idea of first person narration always seemed weird to me. plus, i see my stories as me retelling the events the characters have confided in me. so third person makes sense and it’s also why i use past tense in my stories
39) what is your greatest strength as a writer?
describing and narrating emotions and using metaphors
41) list and link to five fanfics you’re currently reading
my reader’s block has been going strong, so i’m not reading anything currently unfortunately
43) is there anyone in your fandom who really inspires you?
my squirrels 💜
45) what is your all time favorite fanfic?
i have to say Experimentation i just have to
i also love Perdition, what an incredible piece of writing
47) ao3, ff.net or tumblr - where do you prefer to post and why?
definitely ao3, i just love its interface i guess?
49) do you care if people comment on/ reblog your writing? why/why not?
okay so here’s the deal. ofc i care. every artist who shares their work, every creator, cares; at least to a degree. it’s why we share. we want people to see and love and appreciate our work, we want it recognised and celebrated even. we want people to engage with it, show it to their friends, talk abt it, have thoughts abt it. it’s only natural and ofc i’m absolutely no exception
with that said. i’ve always tried to remind myself that kudos/likes are also engagement. that even just reading is engagement. that everyone’s limit or ability for engagement isn’t the same, and that ultimately it’s their choice how or if they’ll engage with my writing. i try to, and i do, value everyone who even just reads my stories. i share something with the world for free and it’s my choice to do and continue to do so. what happens after that isn’t up to me
so yes i do care a lot abt reblogs and comments. they make me very happy, they validate and encourage me. but people have no obligation, in my eyes at least, to engage with my works a specific way. just like i have no specific obligation to provide a certain type of content on set periods of time or with a set limit of words or to continue to provide stories; or literally any other obligation. no one can police my actions and choices up until i’ve posted a story and i can’t police anyone’s actions or choices after i’ve posted it. and that’s the beauty of fandom for me - we’re all here bc we want to and bc it makes us happy, with no expectations or obligations
ending this with an essay seems only suitable sdfghjkd thank you my egg for giving me the opportunity to talk abt myself in such length 😌💜

So what do you think Feral™ Bruce’s relationship with his kids would be like? Somewhere in my bones I feel that he’d have a better relationship with all of them than in canon, but I wonder what you think! Love your blog, btw!!!
Hello Love!!! Thank you so much for your message! 🥰🧡🧡
I took some time to reflect on this and really think it through, since there are two problems: 1) I only really know about the “fandom favourites”, as in Dick (who I know most about since I used to read the 50s comics as a kid), Jason, Tim, Damian. And thus I felt a little unqualified since I know so little about the girls etc.
2) Rob is 33, which means the Robins would all have to be VERY young. Realistically, I guess, we could assume timeline-wise Jason would’ve died not too long ago? But I’m just going to ignore realism. So, without further ado
Feral Bruce and his Robins
Dick: Bruce adopting Dick makes sense to me, since the grief over his own lost family is so fresh in his mind. He’d lay eyes on this heartbroken child and immediately jump into action. However, due to his age and personality, this wouldn’t have a TRACE of a father/son relationship. Not even close. They’re chaos siblings, with Bruce as the messy rat and Dick as the adoring golden boy. He’s super proud of his older bro and tells others about how cool he is, which everyone 100% buys because it’s Bruce Wayne, of course he’s super cool. They don’t know that Dick’s definition of cool is “he slipped on his own 3 hour old puddle of sprite and did a funny backflip”. Now - as they grow older: I say they’re rather close due to their shared history(&shared grief), and they’re in a way rather similar. Similar fighting styles (both acrobats and very graceful, while Dick is more of a show-off while Bruce is more erratic), similar sense of humour and taste in films etc. I also think they don’t have a dramatic falling out, Dick just fucks off. Bruce is definitely sad about it, but I think he respects Dick’s need for personal growth since he himself isn’t exactly an overbearing cuddly person and most likely shut himself away for a few days at a time in the past. Idk. I think they get each other really well. So yeah, their relationship is def better!!
Jason: Bruce sees a kid trying to hotwire the batmobile and recognises a kindred spirit. Jason pros - he has a lot of that chaotic energy Bruce has. Jason cons - he lacks the grace and self-control. In general, I feel like pre-Joker Jason and Bruce had a rather good relationship as well. Once again not really that father figure thing, though. But Bruce moved up from”chaotic older brother” to “cool older brother” - since he now has a bit of a grip on how to treat teenagers, even though Jason doesn’t take to his rules as well as Dick did (I see many a person interpret Bruce as kind of lenient and clueless, letting the kids run wild and free, and while I agree with the base levels of that, I’m p sure that Bruce in any version is so built on self-control, that he’d impose that on others as well. Strict meal plans, exercises, etc). Jason’s death is a thing I really don’t know how to handle, because Bruce has such a thin skin. Frankly, I don’t know how he’d survive something like that. Grief is terrible and heart-breaking, and I’m not sure how well-equipped Bruce would be. It’s a very, very dark time. Red Hood is another thing. Bruce can barely fight Harvey, so I don’t see how he’d manage to interact with Jason. I honestly think he’d completely pull back from him. I don’t know how they’d heal from that and I’m not sure how Bruce would deal with the core of Jason’s anger. Fighting him is one thing (which he absolutely cannot do), but understanding him and trying to mend what’s broken is another. Very difficult. Very heartbreaking.
Tim: that would just be a mess. There aren’t any real descriptions of Batman, because his contact with civilians/the GPD is minimal and can you trust villains? They say his fighting style is erratic, but can you trust them? Can you believe Riddler, madly gnawing on his hat, when he tells you Batman threw a comically large plush bat at him and then bonked him over the head with a “bat-knocker”?! What I’m saying: Tim figures the “I love the Ritz. I just wish they had soda-fountains. They have the room and people would love it. A fountain of sparkling-cool orange soda in the hall, catching the light and making those nice ambient sounds. That would be glam. What was the question?” - act is an act, but he’s not at all prepared for the actual Feral Bruce Experience™️. He drops himself off on Bruce’s doorstep and holds his whole “I know who you are” speech until Bruce opens the door and the guy is wearing a kilt and a “world’s #1 Bat” shirt, drinking hot beetroot juice and greets him by saying “how the fuck did you get past the sprinklers?” In short - Tim didn’t expect to be the responsible one here. In general, I feel like they’d get along well, still, considering Bruce is so enthusiastic about learning and bettering himself. However, I do feel like his erratic rat-nature would clash with Tim now and then.
Damian: Bruce’s first instinct after hearing he’s a father is to learn how to raise a baby, so he panically throws together a huge pile of Infant Care books from the library, Damian (10+) standing right next to him. That said, he’s very concerned about being a good father figure and raising Damian right. He loves the other boys, of course, but he never really saw himself as their father. This is a new situation for him and he doesn’t feel like he’s up for it. So now he tries to be a good influence, which results in him knocking on their doors at 1:30am all “remember not to drink coffee past midnight!” while holding a pitcher with Earl Grey.
Which brings me to the end note: Bruce is actually a great influence, he’s just not aware of it. He enforces healthy eating habits and a strict exercise routine. He’s got great posture and reminds his boys to sit/walk straight and stretch. He’s very cultured and studious in a very un-pretentious way, setting a great example for the boys.
But most importantly - he’s so true to himself in such an unapologetic way that everyone else feels free and encouraged to be themselves, too. While his eccentric behaviour could be interpreted as self-centred narcissism, he makes it extremely clear that he cares greatly about each and every one of them. He’s incredibly compassionate and they all know that he loves them dearly.
They all learn a lot from him when he’s not looking, and whenever he notices some little piece of evidence for just how much he’s influencing them, he turns into a mess, eating carrot sticks in the kitchen at 2am with big teary eyes while Alfred makes him tea. (Alfred is the real father figure, of course, but he’s insanely proud of Bruce for handling his responsibilities so well and doing so good with his flock of Robins)
I’m very, very soft. Bruce deserves the world. He loves his family a lot, even though he seems to take them for granted or forget about them at times. And they love him, too, although he’s a bit strange.
(So, to make it short: they DO have a great relationship. Just a tiny bit rocky at times, but I feel like this Bruce is less emotionally repressed and thus a lot of issues would fall flat? They know he cares)

TOP SONGS OF 2020 WRITE UP!
https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6WDeuRMOV8neAhU2zd193d?si=lZ9gDIp0TsCCEOeCS7_QGw
Tumblr media
1. I remember everything - John Prine
I was going to write an incredibly earnest and long review of this song that outlined just how much John Prine meant to me. I can’t really do it and I think this song probably says enough alone. With only a few chords he always manages to express all the little things that make love what it is, all different kinds of love. Long lasting, short moments, love with places, sounds, going places and staying home, endless family ties, and the often fragile but in the end tenable love between all human beings in the face of catastrophe. The pandemic stole a lot of things from a lot of people this year, including John Prine, but he will remain one of the greatest songwriters of all time and his songs will live on forever.
2. Dream Palette - Yves Tumor
I can’t drive but let’s pretend I’m driving, I’m in LA and it’s night time or something, my elbow’s out the window, don’t know why I’m wearing sunglasses, this song comes on the radio, I’m the coolest person alive.
3. Boylife in EU- Yung Lean
Not to repeat my review of Garden but when the chorus comes I feel like I’m on top of a really big hill and its pouring it down with rain and im screaming but this time its because of a no-deal Brexit.
4. Garden- Joseph Futak
My review was already used as part of Joe’s promo campaign and it said: “feel like im on top of a really big hill and its pouring it down with rain and I’m screaming when the drums come in x x”
5. Circle the Drain- Soccer Mommy
I like this song because I too, am often alone in my room, and I have also become obsessed with subtle breakbeats to an extent where people around me have become very bored of the subject.
6. The Brothers William Said- The Innocence Mission
I listened to this song over and over when I was travelling round London in January just after my birthday, it felt like I’d been listening to it for years, like it was in a movie I’d forgotten. It felt at the time like I was saying a lot of goodbyes, recognising that things weren’t really like they used to be.
7. On the Floor- Perfume Genius
Say it with me ladies: I CROSS OUT HIS NAME ON THE PAGE!!!!
8. Shameika- Fiona Apple
She may not believe it but I bet Fiona Apple looked tough with a riding crop.
9. Song for Our Daughter- Laura Marling
Everything about this is fantastic, mellow and bright at the same time. Every part is brought forward individually and no part of this song gets left behind. A stunning vocal from Laura Marling and purposeful lyrics set to a cinematically emotive instrumental. Pure magic as always.
10. Building site outside- Piglet
Not going to lie, I was in a very vulnerable emotional state when I listened to this song for the first time, but I think that makes it no less powerful and just, sad. The lyric ‘she smiled at me so much last time’ is just so simple and devastating that you forget this would’ve been on every indie film soundtrack from 2000-2008 if Piglet was an industry plant.
11. I wonder- Shamir
One word: EPIC
12. Crimson Tide- Destroyer
Listened to this every time I came on my period this year.
13. In the Dining Room - Joe Pera talks with you
Adam showed me Joe Pera when I really felt incredibly sad at the very beginning of this year. It’s a show that’s made me feel good, no matter the circumstances. This moment in the show made me smile, and I love hearing Gene come in a bit too early.
14. Stupid Love- Lady Gaga
Shakin my little booty in the kitchen to this x
15. Might bang, might not- Little Simz
Livid we didn’t all get to go to End of the Road and see all the hot dad’s loving Little Simz.
16. Fire- Waxahatchee
A truly insane vocal. I listened to this song on my way to work almost every day from September to December and fantasised singing back up at some kind of outdoor gig in the summer and it made everything significantly less bleak.
17. Hannah Sun- Lomelda
This song is too nice and genuine for me to say anything other than, “really lovely song :)”.
18. Scroll of Sorrow- Machine Girl, guayaba
Listened to this a lot this year while sitting on my kitchen floor staring into an empty oven, wondering if I was ever going to go to a party again.
19. Build a nest- Jeff and Ruby Parker
Have put this on in the flat because the guitar solo reminds me of everything my dad listens to at home. A really great piece of music that kicks off a really exciting album.
20. Kiss me thru the phone- That Kid
Ned said yesterday that he thought it was funny how much the original of this song is so foundational to hyper pop and I agree. Also I’ve started saying ‘Bitch’ like That Kid does every time I stub my toe.
21. Cuckoo- Sam Amidon
I am punting down a creek, looking in the branches that hang over the water for the bird that shall lead me to my next clue.
22. Places/ Plans- Skullcrusher
Used this song to comfort myself in moments where I also just don’t understand why I’m not famous.
23. Sweetjoy- Jam City
Finally….. HAIM for dudes.
24. Clean Living- Slow Weather
I saw someone listening to this on the side of my Spotify so I decided to give it a go and it was a fantastic decision. It’s mental that half of this song is an outro.
25. Summer All Over- Blake Mills
Along with the music video visuals and the dampened piano tone, this wins the competition for least summer-y song with the actual word summer in the title.
26. Ready Cheeky Pretty- CHAI
All of my joy this year has been brought to me by CHAI. I have nothing negative to say about CHAI. If you have anything negative to say about CHAI you’re gonna have to go through me.
27. Diaphanous- Land of Talk
This band was recommended to me by a guy I was trying to flirt with at rough trade east but everything closed before I could impress him by saying ‘I think they’re really cool’.
28. Anything - Adrianne Lenker
Anyone who has ever attempted to write a song with me knows how much I simply love rhyming. Seriously though, every thing rhymes, brilliant stuff. (It’s also such a brilliantly full and constant song that still manages to move and remain exciting from start to finish. I imagine this is partially due to Adrianne Lenker’s almost nursery rhyme- esque structure and also due to her beautifully colloquial approach to family dynamics.)
29. Blow- Dj Gigola, Kev Koko
This song makes me wish I was Jason Bourne- just wanna jump really far while something explodes behind me.
30. Money Can’t Buy- Yaeji, Nappy Nina
‘Well I’ll buy some Yaeji tickets, they’re for NOVEMBER, there’s NO WAY they’re gonna get cancelled’.
31. Only the Truth- Johanna Warren
When I first listened to this song I felt like I was floating in the ocean looking up at the stars as the drums came in on ‘what more can I do’. An incredibly beautiful and careful song.
32. Gasoline- Haim
2020 could probably be summarised with the phrase ‘WHY AM I NO LONGER IN CALIFORNIA? WHY DID I LEAVE CALIFORNIA?’ And this song is the 3 minutes 13 seconds seconds of escapism I needed to not topple into a full spiral.
33. Mapuu - Ic3peak
No one can convince me that Ic3peak are real people. They are a collective made up of child ghosts.
34. Don’t Worry- Bladee
Whenever I have an anxiety attack in the night I wake up and see Bladee’s ghost of the future over my bed, he says ‘Don’t worry’ and mumbles for a bit as I fall back into a peaceful sleep.
35. The biggest tits in history- The magnetic fields
The most relatable magnetic fields song imo.
36. Sand Castle- nijuu
Yujin is a genius and my answer is yes, I do want to just walk for a while.
37. Curl Up- Darren Hayman
Ned reminded me how much I used to love Darren Hayman, and both of them have been a pretty big part of my year.
38. When Will Death Come- Sarah Mary Chadwick
‘Wow, mental voice’ - Ned, while doing the washing up.
39. Dear Dad - Sylvie Wiley
‘But I didn’t cry, you’d be proud’ Sylvie, I’m weeping forever.
40. 34+35- Ariana Grande
Hehehehehehehehehe
41. Garden Song- Phoebe Bridgers
Phoebe Bridgers is a pretty unparalleled lyricist and this song feels like a disconnected series of thoughts that somehow all make sense together and come to create something that doesn’t build, but all just kind of sits? What I’m trying to say is that I don’t really know what she’s talking about but like, I get it.
42. Ringtone (remix) - 100 gecs, Charli xcx, Kero Kero Bonito, Rico Nasty,
I love the way it sounds like everyone got just one take and had to improvise all the lyrics but it still bangs.
43. Changer- Andy Shauf
Thank you lord for another album about a smaller than average man overthinking all of his social interactions with lots of lovely clarinet parts.
44. What’s your pleasure - Jessie Ware
My pleasure jessie? Probably just sitting by the fire with a tough crossword and a glass of merlot x
45. Slime- Shygirl
Shygirl’s series of singles this year made me even more livid that I had to take out my eyebrow piercing for my new job this year.
46. Sears Tower- Salem
Perfect halloween release.
47. Title track- happyness
Ned turned to me and said: ‘so is their new thing that they sound like Elliot Smith’ and I said: ‘and that’s a bad thing?’
48. Cross-sound ferry (walk on ticket) - Hamilton Leithauser
Have found unbelievable joy in chopping veg and shouting GREEEEEEEN PORT, NEEEEEEWWWW YOOORK alone in my kitchen.
49. Lowswimmer- Hailaker
I’ve loved hearing Jemima’s voice when I haven’t got to see her much this year. I normally take the piss out of the Hambledon line but I haven’t seen that this year really either. I guess we find sentimentality in strange places.
50. XS - Rina Sawayama
This song made me feel very decadent on those days where I didn’t wash.
51. Emily- Clem Snide
Let’s be more kind and brave in the face of it all.
52. Building a fire- Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy
P.O.V you’re doing bushcraft in the garden with your husband Bonnie Prince Billy and he’s here to protect you.
53. Asexual Wellbeing- Okay Kaya
This song absolutely bangs but I am truly bewildered by the way they singled out the line ‘if they could put a pulse into a spinach leaf, can they turn the two of us into a tree?’ in the production as if that was a true piece of genius. As I say great tune tho.
54. Anthems- Charli xcx
The soundtrack to couch to 5k
55. Never Better- Kitty Fitz
A SE London queen bringing us huge pop tunes in 2020. So so excited to see what 2021 brings us from Kitty, she’s gonna be a real force!
56. Deep in Love- Bonny Light Horsemen
This is such a delightful song which (mainly due to the time I actually got around to listening to the whole record) for me really rang in the spring. A beautifully recorded testament to the feeling of love getting stronger meaning you have a lot more to lose.
57. Malibu- Kim Petras
My song of the summer, made me feel like I was at the beach when really I was in Lewisham.
58. Like I’m Winning it- Girlpool
I’m so delighted that the turn girlpool have made this year is towards dramatic goth music with breakbeats. Their voices both sound amazing and they look simply incredible.
59. Azad- Frazey Ford
I have no idea what she’s saying as always but I love it.
60. Helio- Charlotte Dos Santos
I’m literally so excited for what Charlotte Dos Santos is gonna put out next. The production is fantastic and her aesthetics are flawless.
61. Lost in the Country- Trace Mountains
‘I checked my email twice as I cried’. Safe to say we’ve all been there this year amirite girlies x
62. Unfold You- Rostam
I hated this at first, I thought, what’s this lo-fi beats to study to shit, but it’s now my classic ‘I’m just gonna pop to the shops, anyone want anything? x’ song. Huge.
63. Oh Yeah- A.G cook
One of 2020s realisations is that me and A.G Cook kind of look like we could be cousins.
64. Can’t cool me down- Car Seat Headrest
I would like to personally thank will Toledo for giving me a tune that got me off my ass when I was too warm to do exercise this summer.
65. Take back the radio- Katy J Paerson
In love with Katy J Pearson’s voice and the way this song builds. Just pretty flawless and feel good in my opinion. I think she’s such an exciting new artist who’s gonna be around for a very very long time.
66. Good Woman- The Staves
‘I’m a good woman’… speak for yourselves.
67. A Little Love- Jack Francis
Feel like I’ve been singing this song for about 5 years! It’s amazing and I’m so excited about what Jack’s going to bring out in 2021, he’s a genius and also the nicest man on the planet.
68. Lullaby No.4 - Snailbeach
This song makes me feel like I’m being hypnotised on a haunted carousel in a very relaxing way.
69. Boyfriend in every city- Roma Radz
Sucks that she can’t see any of her boyfriends cos of covid :(
70. Jaja ding dong- Will Ferrell
Get back in there and play Jaja Ding Dong !!!!
71. Highway- Jonatan leandoer96
Man, would be pretty sick to have 20 boys outside the club but alas the clubs are dead and I’ve only regularly texted about 4 people this year.
72. De nadie- Kali Uchis
Felt v sexy listening to this for the first time in a Morley’s in Honor Oak.
73. Weird Fishes- Lianne La Havas
This album was a pretty triumphant return for Lianna La Havas and me teenage self simply couldn’t be happier.
74. Micro Creature- Aya Gloomy
Love that despite everything about this song telling me otherwise, that the artwork for this single looks like Aya Gloomy is just chilling in the fields by my family home in Hampshire.
75. Si Ella Sale- Bad Bunny
Better get on the duolingo now if I’m gonna know what this guy’s saying at Porto next year.
76. Through my sails- Mountain Man
Truly gentle reimagining of an already incredibly beautiful song, mountain man make every word seem new!
77.Christmas Day (get me outta this funk) - Baggio and Blue 5 Years- Bath days
In joint 77th place are two banging Christmas songs that have soundtracked a pretty bleak Christmas period and have made me feel pretty joyous in their ways, despite one literally being called Blue Five Years.

Reinventing Javert
An upcoming adaptation of Victor Hugo’s 19th century novel Les Misérables will be the most satisfying version yet, says star David Oyelowo, as he explains why taking the character of Javert beyond his portrayal as a one-one-dimensional villain was his most challenging role to date.
“If there’s something I’ve learned, it is you can never predict how anything you do is going to be received, as Victor Hugo will attest to,” David Oyelowo says with a smile. “But the thing I do know we’ve achieved is filling in a lot of the blanks that inevitably exist because you are trying to boil down a huge novel.”
Oyelowo is deconstructing his latest television role, which will see him tackle Javert, the police inspector and primary antagonist in Victor Hugo’s 19th century epic novel Les Misérables, in the forthcoming adaptation for UK public broadcaster the BBC and Masterpiece on PBS in the US.
The miniseries has been authored by period adaptation maven Andrew Davies (War & Peace, Pride & Prejudice) and sees Oyelowo face off against Dominic West’s protagonist Jean Valjean (pictured top alongside Oyelowo).
The subject of numerous recreations, the novel’s most recognisable reinventions are the long-running musical, which has now been a fixture on London’s West End for 33 years, and the 2012 Hollywood film helmed by The King’s Speech director Tom Hooper.
Oyelowo points out, however, that rather than treading the same ground, Davies’ six-hour series can go deeper into the book. “If it’s a film or a musical you’re distilling it down to, it’s too thin to be as satisfying as the book allows,” he says. “Six hours of television in the hands of Andrew Davies is a far more satisfying way to explore that story and understand these characters who intersect in ways that are genuinely universal – in terms of how we exist in the world now.
“What I love about the book is that at any given time I can identify with Javert, I can identify with Jean Valjean, I can identify with Fantine; and that needs time to not reduce them to archetypes. My hope is that people who see this version are really going to have a far greater context for what this story actually is.”
This is no more relevant than to his character, Javert. Oyelowo says the inspector is often portrayed as a “one-dimensional” villain with the sole function of hunting down the misdirected but ultimately good-at-heart Valjean.
“It became clear to me that there was so much more there than people may recognise from knowing the musical. Let’s face it, not enough people have read the book. That became the challenge and it was basically to understand why he pursues him,” he adds.
“What became apparent is that, at the time in which this thing is set, there’s a lot of friction between the classes, between people on the basis of socioeconomics, politics… and so that time required – and I’m not saying he is in any way what the world needs now – someone who operated in moral absolutes in order to bring any kind of order to that chaos. He’s a by-product of the time he was in. Therefore, hopefully, you don’t necessarily condone his actions but you understand them.”
The contradictions that exist in Javert are such that Oyelowo, who has depicted Martin Luther King Jr (Selma) and former Botswanan president Sir Seretse Goitsebeng Maphiri Khama (A United Kingdom) on the big screen, feels the role has proved “one of the most challenging” in his career, due to “the perception people have going in.”
“By and large, people have an opinion [of the character] – even people who haven’t seen the musical, read the book or know much about it. They have a sense, whether it’s a portrayal they’ve seen in a trailer, or a poster they’ve seen, so it’s a little bit like the challenge you have when you’re playing a historical figure. You know that what you have to do in order to do a portrayal that’s satisfying is to bring something revelatory, something that people didn’t know. If you’re just giving them what they already knew, it’s redundant. That was the challenge.”
Oyelowo is changing perceptions, and breaking new ground, from a different standpoint too. In casting him as Javert, the BBC is thought to be the first broadcaster to have selected a non-white actor in the joint-lead role. After the backlash Jodie Whittaker received from some quarters after becoming the first female lead in Doctor Who, does Oyelowo wonder if there will be similar grumblings from people who believe Javert should only ever be a white man?
“In my opinion, we take a far greater licence by taking French history and transposing it onto British history than we do by suggesting that people of colour were integral to European life in the 19th century,” he says. “We have transposed this onto English society in order for it to be understood by a broader audience beyond French people.
“And so if we want to make something that is relevant to the world that we actually live in, we should be reflecting that in every sense, not just the actual language we’re translating the show into but the people who get to portray the characters as well.”
And in casting the actor who has played spies, corrupt detectives and a chess coach in his career so far, director Tom Shankland believes Javert has been given new depth. Speaking to DQ earlier this year, Shankland said Oyelowo had done such an effective job of layering the character and providing a perfect foil for Dominic West’s Valjean that “by the end, I’m almost in tears for Javert.”
“David kept on looking and finding, in extraordinary ways, the humanity – however twisted and bitter – in Javert,” Shankland said. “In my wildest dreams I wasn’t sure we’d get to that place with a character like that. David dug so deep, but all the time he’s scary and driven and the person we hope will never succeed.”
Oyelowo himself says he had conversations with Shankland to discuss how best to portray Javert. While the character has previously been played by esteemed actors including Russell Crowe and Geoffrey Rush, Oyelowo says he did not draw on past interpretations because of the very fact the character has been cast as merely the villain of the piece. Moreover, Javert has often been deemed “quite posh” compared with Valjean, something Oyelowo believes is at odds with Hugo’s work.
“This book is about the underclass, and my character was born in a prison to criminal parents. The portrayals I’ve seen thus far I don’t feel suggest that. In many ways, Jean Valjean and Javert are mirror images of each other; they’re both coming from criminality as opposed to what I’ve seen in the past, which is Javert seeming to be quite posh in relation to Valjean, who’s the criminal,” he explains.
“One of the reasons Javert has this inexorable obsession with hunting down Jean Valjean is that he represents what Javert could have been, under different circumstances, and what he hates in terms of his own upbringing, what lies in his own familial past – that his own parents were in exactly the same situation that Jean Valjean finds himself in for having stolen a loaf of bread.
“His hatred of his parents and upbringing is partly why he hates Jean Valjean. I haven’t seen that before. In talking to Tom, it was very clear we were trying to do something quite different and, hopefully without sounding conceited, something far more real in terms of the novel.”
That said, Oyelowo isn’t completely averse to past interpretations of the novel, and laughs when asked if he’s pleased there will be no singing involved in Davies’ adaptation, which comes from producer Lookout Point and BBC Studios, with the later also distributing. “I like singing; I personally enjoyed the musical film,” he concludes. “But if you’re going to tell this story, you don’t want to literally be doing a version of what we’ve seen quite recently. What we’ve set out to do is something quite different, even though it does have that iconic title.”
Though they may not be accompanied by a tune, it is likely Oyelowo will make Hugo’s words sing when Javert returns to the small screen next year.

MA Fashion and Textile Practices Major Project Path - 12th August
So now I had created my template and practice piece that represented my Protest T-shirt, I wanted to do the same for my Anarchist of Love T-shirt, so I began to follow the same template. I found a couple of websites which had a good selection of love songs to get my teeth into and then that set the ball rolling to trigger more personal songs. Music is an emotional experience for me, I think that’s why I don’t listen to it very often, I invariably start crying! I’m a big indie rock fan so I thought looking at indie love songs would add a unique edge. Love songs don’t always have to be about being sentimental and overtly romantic. Once I had found suitable lyrics I created a Design Map as before to plot out the layout of the T-shirt.
Tumblr media
Initially I wanted to design a T-shirt about love that was multicoloured, bright and eye catching, but then that didn’t represent the aesthetic I wanted to achieve. It was a T-shirt about being an anarchist of love, so it had to look like a newspaper or a billboard, where you were willing to literally wear your heart on your sleeve (or T-shirt!) I decided that incorporating red into the black and white mix would be apt. Our traditional ‘Red Top’ newspapers grab attention like no others  - like the Daily Mirror front page on the Sex Pistols I showed earlier - and the colour red is considered to be the colour of love after all, but why is that?
Red:
It is known that the colour red can affect us physically - simply observing the colour can enable increased heart rate, blood pressure and respiration. It makes us feel more energetic and confident, and can provide comfort, it’s a sexy colour, so there are many reasons why red is associated with love. Although red is very much the oxymoron of the colour wheel, it’s often used as a colour for warning, like the signs on the road - ‘Do not enter!’ and ‘Stop!’ Where would horror films be without the colour red? It’s the colour of blood and instills fear. Like the use of the red balloon that character Pennywise the clown carries in Stephen King’s tale ‘IT’.

As I discussed in my previous blog entry regarding colour, colours can be interpreted in different ways depending on your culture, although the colour red is the most used colour in national flags. In China for instance the colour red is a protective colour. This theory comes from an ancient folk tale regarding a man eating beast called the Nian who only attacked at the end of the lunar year -Chinese New Year. The beast was overcome when the villagers discovered it  disliked light, loud noises and the colour red, so they made firecrackers, adorned their houses with red paper lanterns and dressed themselves with the colour for protection. Now at Chinese New Year these traditions still continue.

The Aztecs discovered that using an extract from the female Cochineal beetle mixed with water produced a potent red dye. A pound of this dry extract would require the use of around 70,000 insects, which in the time of the Aztecs was more valuable than gold. The Aztecs may have discovered how to make and use extract, however it was the Spanish which introduced it to Europe around the 1500′s. The colour quickly took on where it was used mainly to produce textiles, many of which were used to produce gowns for the aristocracy or uniforms for armies. Red was perceived as a powerful colour.

The colour inevitably made its way to the artists paint palette where it was mixed with a binder to produce a vibrant pigment known as Lake. If your funds for new materials were a little tight, the colour could be made from shreds of dyed cloth, but the results were not hardly as vibrant as the results Lake could achieve. There was a drawback to its use however, whilst the colour remained vibrant on textiles it faded through exposure to daylight on canvas. Within oils it had to be used in excess otherwise with only minimal use it would fade quickly. In the late 19th century artificial colours were produced, such as ones made from coal rat called Alizarins. These new artificial pigments not only gave the same vibrancy but better longevity and offered a much cheaper alternative. For the sake of the Cochineal beetle, this was probably good news as it almost died out in its native homeland.

Whilst on the subject of love, why is the red rose so symbolic of the emotion? We could say that it’s all Shakespeare’s (1564 - 1616) fault when he penned in his romantic tragedy Romeo and Juliet, when Juliet declares:
“What’s in a name? that which we call a rose. By any other name would smell as sweet”.
But the rose has had significant meaning to cultures far earlier than Shakespearean times. In Western culture the rose was believed to have been created by the Greek goddess of love herself; Aphrodite. After her lover Adonis was killed by a wild boar his blood and her tears soaked into the ground and from that grew red roses, although this story has many versions and some say the wildflower Anemone grew instead. In Roman mythology it is said that wealthy Romans gave red roses as symbols of beauty and love. For thousands of years China was the main cultivator of roses, roses were said to have been grown in cultivated Chinese gardens dating back 5,000 years. According to Hindu beliefs the Goddess Laxmi - who is the Goddess of fortune and prosperity -  was created from 108 large and 1,008 small rose petals. Many depictions of her show her sitting or standing in a giant rose and holding roses in her hands. Her husband, the God Vishnu was deeply in love with her, thus cementing the idea that roses were strongly connected to love and romance.

The Victorians used flowers a as floral code to portray their emotions. Publicly declaring your undying love to the object of your desire was not socially acceptable in the Victorian era, so they developed a floral code to say what they couldn’t. This code wasn’t solely used for declarations of love, flowers were used to send messages of sympathy, friendship, desire etc. Each flower had a different meaning, and when combined in certain ways could say specific things. Through the use of this code the Victorians instilled in us the importance of flowers and what they mean to us today.
20th Century Typographers (2017) states the renowned Artist and Teacher Josef Albers said of the colour red:
“If one says ‘Red’ (the name of a color) and there are 50 people listening, it can be expected that there will be 50 reds in their minds. And one can be sure that all these reds will be very different”.
Albers was a teacher at the Bauhaus Weimar from 1923 to the school’s dissolution in 1933. He taught the fundamental ethos of Bauhaus, that design should be based primarily on the properties of the material used and the function of the design. Along with fellow teacher and artist László Moholy-Nagy he taught this preliminary course until 1928, then solo until 1933. After his stint at Bauhaus he and his wife - Bauhaus student and fellow artist Anneliese Fleischmann - moved to America where he began to work at Black Mountain College in North Carolina. Here he developed and wrote the course Interaction of Color. Albers was obsessed with colour and its use. The course was a first of its kind, he wanted to describe and show how colour behaved, he described colour like it was a sentient thing. For centuries colour had been perceived as a science, from Newton’s discovery of the colour spectrum to that of the colour wheel used in the school of Bauhaus itself. Albers was uneasy with the concept of the colour wheel and believed it served of little practical use to an artist, he wanted to show that colour behaved in certain ways, he believed that we perceive colour in varying degrees and that as a medium it is bent on deceiving the viewer. He catagorised colours into three distinctive areas: Passive, Deceptive and Unstable but he did recognise that colours were predictable to some extent and that they ‘sat’ together well. In 1963 the course was finally published, 33 years after its inception and in 2013, a ground breaking digital edition of the Interaction of Color was developed in the form of an app for the Apple iPad. The 50th Anniversary Edition publication below appears to be supporting his quote in regards to the several ways we perceive the colour red:

To me the most memorable of any ‘Love’ T-shirt that incorporates the colours black, white and red is that depicting graphic designer Milton Glaser’s famous logo ‘I ♥ NY’. On my first trip to New York it was one of the first things I wanted to buy because it represented a place I had only dreamt of going to. Also, I knew I could wear it once I got home as it was a fashionable item of clothing and still is!
In 1976 when Glaser was a young New York designer just starting out, the city was on the decline. Crime rates were worrying high and many of the wealthier, middle class New Yorkers had moved out of town. Something had to be done in an attempt to restore some faith in the city, so the New York State Department of Commerce devised a campaign to do just that. The slogan ‘I love New York’ had already been mooted by Ad agency Wells Rich Greene and a jingle had been composed to be played between prime time TV shows. All that the campaign required was a strong logo to complete it and Glaser was brought in to do the job.

It was reported that in a yellow cab on the way to a client meeting he pulled out a red crayon from his pocket and quickly scrawled the idea down on a piece of paper. He then later adapted it so the text stacked on top of each other to line up the four elements. Using the heart instead of the word ‘Love’ was one of the first of its kind, akin to the use of emoji’s today. Chris Lowery (2017), president and chief strategist of Chase Design Group said as such:
“The I ♥ NY logo Milton Glaser created so many decades ago was really the world’s first emoji. In a diverse, multicultural city like New York, anyone who saw it instantly knew what it meant”.
At the time Glaser worked pro bono, and when he was told the campaign wouldn’t run much past a few months he decided not to copyright the design. However New York state’s Economic Development Corp did copyright the design, and now after over 40 years it is still one of the world’s most recognised logos. The day after the horrific terrorist attack on New York on 11th September 2001, Glaser looked to the logo once again in an attempt to build moral. He signed the left side of the heart and added ‘more than ever’ underneath.

The modified logo appeared on the front cover of The Daily News on September 19th and the students at Manhattan’s School of Visual Arts produced a matching poster free of charge to be distributed around the city. Toufan Rahimpour (2017)  COO of Logoworks says the logo has stood the test of time for a reason:
“I ♥ NY was a symbol of its time (a “scrappy” logo for a “scrappy city”) that became so culturally omnipresent it transcended itself. It’s no longer just a logo, it conveys emotions. It represents the spirit of New York.”

The best royal tiaras: Meghan Markle, Princess Diana and Kate Middleton's bridal jewels and their history - Evening Standard
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The hottest luxury and A List news
As the ultimate jewellery status symbol, tiaras are mostly the reserve of royalty and aristocrats. Heirloom pieces passed down from generation-to-generation, each tiara has a history as rich as its design.
There’s a few you’ll probably recognise, like Queen Elizabeth II’s Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara (which appears on British currency) as well as the Cartier creation Kate Middleton picked for her wedding day in 2011. But royal families on the continent have some pretty spectacular tiaras of their own, featuring gobstopper-sized sapphires and exquisite botanical motifs.
British royal dress code rules dictate that only married women can wear tiaras. As etiquette expert Grant Harrold told the BBC, “for married ladies [a tiara was traditionally] a sign of status and would show you were taken and not looking for a husband. For the gentleman it was a clear sign not to make advances towards the lady in question.”
Last year Meghan Markle’s wedding sparked a bridal tiara trend. After the ceremony, Debenhams reported that searches on their site for “bridal tiara” climbed by 117%, as people sought a bit of (affordable) headgear for their own big day.
Here’s some of the most breathtaking tiaras worn by royal women. If we had one of these we wouldn’t take it off – even in the bath.
Meghan Markle’s Wedding Tiara: The Queen Mary Diamond Bandeau Tiara

Worn by: Meghan Markle, Queen Mary
There was speculation over which tiara bride-to-be Meghan Markle would choose to wear on her wedding day – if she chose to wear one at all. While some people put money on her wearing Princess Diana’s beloved Spencer tiara, in the end she opted for the Queen Mary Bandeau Tiara.
The tiara was loaned to Meghan by Queen Elizabeth for her nuptials to Prince Harry, which took place in May last year. Before the Duchess of Sussex wore it on her big day, the tiara hadn’t been worn in 65 years. It was previously worn and well loved by Queen Mary, Queen Elizabeth’s grandmother.
(Getty Images)
Like a lot of royal tiaras, it has a dual purpose. The centrepiece is also a brooch, which was given to Queen Mary on her wedding day. Set with ten massive diamonds, the brooch is detachable, and the band can be adjusted in size as it’s made up of eleven different sections.
If you look closely at Meghan’s wedding day photos, you might notice the base of the tiara is wrapped in a thin strip of black velvet. Royal jewellery blog Order of Splendor say that this was added for the wedding day so that the tiara “disappeared into her hair“.
Kate Middleton’s Wedding Tiara: The Cartier Halo Tiara
(AFP/Getty Images)
Worn by: Kate Middleton
This tiara became famous when Kate Middleton wore it to marry Prince William. It was first bought in 1936 by King George VI, who gave it to his wife Elizabeth (the Queen Mother) as a gift.
The tiara is set with over 1000 diamonds (739 brilliant-cut diamonds and 149 baguette diamonds). The Royal Collection Trust also add that it was crafted as a “band of 16 graduated scrolls”.
(Getty Images)
Although other royals have re-worn their wedding tiaras, Kate has yet to wear the Cartier Halo Tiara again. That might be because it’s been something of a hot ticket since the wedding, exhibited in 2011 at Buckingham palace (above) and at a 2018 Cartier exhibition in Australia.
Princess Eugenie’s Wedding Tiara: The Greville Kokoshnik Emerald Tiara
(Getty Images)
Worn by: Princess Eugenie
For her nuptials to Jack Brooksbank, Queen Elizabeth let her granddaughter borrow the Greville Emerald Kokoshnik Tiara. According to the Royal Family’s official website, it was crafted by Boucheron in the “kokoshnik style popularised in the Russian Imperial Court” and was made for Dame Margaret Greville (who left it to Queen Elizabeth II).
The central emerald is apparently 93.7 carats (yes, you read that right – 93), set in a platinum band with brilliant and rose cut diamonds. According to a royal biography by Robert Jobson, the tiara was rumoured to be Meghan Markle’s first choice for her wedding, but the Queen reportedly preferred she wore one that did not have links to Russia.
Princess Diana’s Wedding Tiara: Spencer Tiara
(Graham Harrison/REX/Shutterstock)
Worn by: Princess Diana, Celia McCorquodale
This tiara isn’t technically a royal piece but still deserves a spot in the hall of fame. When Lady Diana married Prince Charles, she paid homage to her own family with the Spencer Tiara. The piece had been in the family for decades and had gone through many changes, as the family added a topper and extended the ends of the tiara with other pieces in their jewellery collection. By the 1930s, it was fully complete and many women of the Spencer family have worn it on their wedding day ever since.
If you look closely, you’ll see that the silver tiara’s many diamonds are set in tulips, scrolls and other floral patterns. After Diana’s death, the tiara hadn’t been seen in public for years until Princess Diana’s niece Celia McCorquodale wore it for her own wedding last June.
The Lover’s Knot Tiara
(REX/Shutterstock)
Worn by: Princess Diana, Kate Middleton, Queen Mary
The Lover’s Knot Tiara is one of the most famous pieces in the royal vault, and was one of Princess Diana’s favourites. The Court Jeweller reports that the tiara was actually created from another piece called the Ladies of England tiara by Queen Mary, who later passed it down to Queen Elizabeth II.

Apparently Princess Diana was supposed to wear the tiara as her something borrowed on her wedding day, but instead chose to wear her family’s Spencer Tiara. After Diana passed away the tiara disappeared from the public eye, until Kate Middleton wore it in 2015 for a state banquet. The tiara is made up of diamonds and hanging pearls set in silver and gold. It was reportedly so heavy it used to give Princess Diana headaches.
The Greville Tiara (Boucheron Honeycomb Tiara)
(Getty Images)
Worn by: Queen Mother, Duchess of Cornwall
This is one of the most architectural pieces on the list and was one of the Queen Mother’s favourites – she chose to wear it for an official portrait. Also known as the Boucheron Honeycomb Tiara, this piece was originally created by Boucheron for Dame Margaret Greville, the same woman who owned Princess Eugenie’s wedding tiara.
After Greville (a close friend of Queen Mary) passed away, the tiara was passed onto the Queen Mother who wore it out constantly and even had extra diamonds added to the top row, according to Order of Splendor.
(Getty Images)
Since then, the Queen has loaned it to her daughter-in-law Camilla Parker-Bowles. She’s been seen wearing it to numerous official events, from a state banquet back in 2013 through to an appearance in Sri Lanka in 2017.
The Prussian Tiara

Worn by: Queen Letizia of Spain, Queen Sofia of Spain
If Megara from Hercules ever got to wear a tiara, it would surely be this one. This brilliant diamond tiara belongs to the Spanish royal family and is well loved by Queen Letizia, who wore it on her wedding day. With Grecian motifs and laurel leaf details, it’s the teardrop pendant in the middle that catches the viewer’s eye.
(AFP/Getty Images)
It was made originally for Princess Victoria Louise of Prussia for her wedding in 1913 to Prince Ernst August of Hanover, whose daughter Friederike eventually married into the Greek royal family. It finally passed into the hands of the Spanish royal family when Princess Sofia of Prussia married future Spanish King Juan Carlos in 1962, bringing the tiara with her.
The Dutch Sapphire Parure Tiara
(Hollandse Hoogte/REX/Shutterstock)
For King Wilhelm-Alexander’s inauguration in 2013 the Dutch royals’ stepped out in their finery. Queen Maxima wore the incredible Dutch Sapphire Parure Tiara, matching her outfit to its striking blues. According to the Natural Sapphire Company, the piece is made up of 33 blue sapphires and 655 diamonds set in platinum in a distinctly Gothic style.
(Getty Images)
The tiara in its complete form actually features a tall plumed point, which Queen Maxima chose to swap it out with a big round diamond to match the others on the tiara. Queen Maxima has worn it several times since – we don’t blame her.
The Hanoverian Floral Tiara
(Getty Images)
The Hanoverian Floral Tiara has become a go-to for women marrying into the Hanover royal family. According to Tatler, the tiara is believed to date back to the 1900s and as with the Spencer tiara depicts a series of intertwined florals. The tiara was seen as recently as 2018, when Alessandra de Osma married Prince Christian of Hanover in Peru.
Ekaterina Malysheva (Getty Images)
The tiara also made a public appearance the year before, when Ekaterina Malysheva maried Hereditary Prince Ernst August of Hanover. The always elegant Princess Caroline has also been seen in the tiara, wearing it back in 2004 for Crown Princess Mary of Denmark’s wedding to Crown Prince Frederik.
Queen Mary’s Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara
(Getty Images)
Worn by: Queen Elizabeth II
Besides having the coolest name, this is Queen Elizabeth’s most iconic tiara. Prior to Elizabeth’s grandmother Queen Mary’s royal wedding in 1893, women around the country from the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland society raised money to commission it. According to Garrard, Queen Mary called it one of her “most valued” gifts. It’s certainly valuable, with elaborate diamond peaks set with 13 brilliant diamonds.
(Getty Images)
It was then passed down to Queen Elizabeth II on her wedding day and has become the tiara she’s been pictured wearing the most – it’s even on British currency.
Aquamarine Kokoshnik Tiara
(Getty Images)
Worn by: Princess Madeleine and Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden
This stunning blue tiara is one of the many masterpieces in the Swedish royal collection. As with the emerald Greville tiara, it follows the Russian kokoshnik style with sky blue aquamarine gems set in diamonds.
(Getty Images)
The tiara has been worn more recenty by Crown Princess Victoria and Princess Madeleine, who both opted to wear it at the lavish Nobel Prize banquet – on different years. Both women opted to wear dresses in a matching shade.
Connaught Diamond Tiara

Worn by: Princess Madeleine of Sweden, Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden, Queen Silvia
Another of the Swedish royal family’s striking pieces, it’s very popular with women in the family. Also known as the Forget-Me-Knot tiara, it features five diamond loops with a delicate detachable pendant.
(Getty Images)
Princess Madeleine wore it when she attended the wedding of Crown Princess Victoria in 2010, while Victoria also re-wore it last year for the annual Nobel Prize banquet in Stockholm.
Queen Elizabeth’s Wedding Day Tiara: Queen Mary’s Fringe Tiara
(Associated Newspapers/Daily Mail/REX/Shutterstock)
Worn by: Queen Elizabeth II, Queen Mary
On her wedding day in 1947 Queen Elizabeth II’s hairdresser accidentally snapped the tiara in half just hours before her wedding to Prince Charles. Luckily, there was a court jeweller on standby and the tiara was taken via police escort to the diamond jewellers at Garrard who helped repair it in the nick of time.
The tiara was crafted in 1919 for Queen Mary – made from diamonds taken from a necklace. According to the Telegraph, the tiara is formed of “47 diamond bars separated by smaller diamond spikes” and set in gold and silver.
Stuart Diamond Tiara
(Getty Images)
Worn by: Queen Maxima of the Netherlands
Queen Maxima’s 2018 visit to the UK was historical in more ways than one, as she brought her best jewels with her: namely, the Stuart Diamond Tiara. It was the first time in 36 years that a Dutch royal had officially visited the UK and all eyes were on the giant rock in the centre of Queen Maxima’s tiara.
(Getty Images)
Apparently the tiara was first purchased in 1690 when King William III bought it for his wife Queen Mary II. Apparently, it was unusual at the time for people to wear jewellery featuring gigantic diamonds as it was “common practice” that they were cut into two instead.
Wondering how big the diamond is? It’s apparently 39.75 carats.
The Poltimore Tiara
(Getty Images)
Worn by: Princess Margaret
Princess Margaret was one of the most stylish royals of her time and on her wedding day to Antony Armstrong-Jones in 1960, she pulled out all the stops. Not content with the collection already in the royal arsenal, HRH went out and bought a new tiara at auction in 1949 for £5,500: the Poltimore Tiara.
The tiara was originally made for Lady Poltimore and dates back to 1870.
(AFP/Getty Images)
Margaret wore the crown-like tiara for her wedding day, which featured a “graduated line of cushion-shaped and old-cut diamond clusters alternating with diamond-set scroll motifs” set in “silver and gold”.
Controversially, the tiara was sold at auction at Christie’s in 2006 where it was estimated to go for between £150,000-£200,000. In the end it blew far way past this estimate, selling for £926,400 to a private Asian buyer.
The Cut Steel Tiara
(Getty Images)
Worn by: Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden
This tiara is one of Crown Princess Victoria’s favourites. It’s also one of the most unusual on the list. While you’ll find diamonds and emeralds for days on the other pieces, you won’t find a single gemstone on the Cut Steel tiara.
The clue’s in the name as the cut steel technique used on the tiara is what makes it sparkle. According to Laelius Antiques, jewellers employed “steel-faceted studs to create a beautiful, dazzling diamond effect”. According to antique dealers 1st Dibs, “cut steel became popular in the 18th century as a substitute for diamonds, the pieces carefully faceted to reflect the light of candles.”
(Getty Images)
Here, you can see that it’s been expertly crafted to create a nature motif with little acorns and leaves. It’s also inlaid in a gold setting and is said to have been originally made for Queen Hortense of Holland in the early Nineteenth Century, before it was brought over to Sweden.

At the beginning of the week, I have published the press release of the new IWC Portugieser Chronograph with in-house calibre. Two days later I drove to Munchen, to the IWC Boutique to see them live. This historic collection does look good in the new chronograph version and I decided to share with you some pictures and impressions.
Ref. IW371606
Review IWC Portugieser Chronograph
IWC Schaffhausen launched 6 new models of the well known Portugieser Chronograph. The novelty consists in the use of in-house movement 69355 instead of the modified ETA Valjoux 7750. For those familiar with the brand and particular with this model, the manufacture movement is not a big surprise. Moreover quite expected. IWC used previously the calibre 69355 in the IW371601 (blue dial) and IW371602 (white dial) – the IWC Portugieser Chronograph Edition “150 Years”. These two references were launched at SIHH 2018 together with other anniversary pieces.
IWC Portugieser Chronograph Ref. IW371605
Unfortunately, I was not able to photograph all six of them. But other than the dial colour variations there are no other differences (of course, there are the four steel and two gold versions). I focused mainly on the IWC Portugieser Chronograph Ref. IW371605, the white dial with blue accents as one of the most classic versions (more a bit of a favourite).
Ref. IW371605
An elegant classic
Decades of Portugieser has established the model as an elegant but slightly sporty watch with roots in the nautical side of the watchmaking. The brushed case band makes a great contrast with the polished bezel and see-through caseback.
Ref. IW371605
The crown and pushers are well integrated into the 41 mm steel or gold case. The polished “mushroom” pushers have nice and firm feedback. It is a pleasure to use the chrono. Definitively an improvement over the classical versions with modified Valjoux.
Ref. IW371605
The IWC specific crown is decorated with embedded IWC logo. I found that without a bit of fingernail it is difficult to get the crown in the setting position. The fingertips do not have enough grip. The winding imposes no problems, being smooth, effortless.
IWC Portugieser Chronograph triple folding clasp
The watch is fitted with a solid deployant clasp. The brushed buckle is decorated with the IWC logo medallion. A nice view for the back of the wrist. The watch sits comfortably on the wrist.
IWC Portugieser Chronograph steel caseback
The caseback is fixed with 4 screws. The watch offers 3bar water-resistance (visible also as engraving detail on the caseback). The 13.1 mm height is just slightly bigger as the older closed case version, in order to accommodate the sapphire crystal.
IWC Portugieser Chronograph steel side
The Portugieser dial
The IWC Portugieser is one of the most recognisable timepieces. Not only from IWC but also between the classic timepieces. The model gained respect for its simple look and excellent visibility – the main requirements that led to the born of the Portugieser.
Ref. IW371605
The clean dial is adorned with applied numerals as hour indexes. The minutes’ register uses a set of recessed dots in the colour scheme of the watch. Rest of the decorations are printed, including the sloped inner bezel featuring the seconds’ register.
Ref. IW371605
The small seconds and the chronograph 30 minutes counter uses two vertical placed recessed sub-dials with circular guilloche pattern.
Ref. IW371605
Between the models, the variations are just purely cosmetic.
Ref. IW371611
Above is visible the gold case IW371611 that shares the same dial with the steel Ref. IW371604. These two references have the same dial decoration, including the blued chronograph central seconds’ hand and 30 minutes’ counter hand.
Ref. IW371609
IWC Portugieser Chronograph Ref. IW371609 with black dial is adorned with rhodium-plated hands and appliques. The recessed circular pattern is kept. The blue dial Ref. IW371606 shares the decoration with the black dial version.
Ref. IW371610
IWC Portugieser Chronograph Ref. IW371610 features a slate-coloured dial. The contrast with the black sub-dials is lovely.
ef. IW371610
IW371610 offers, in my opinion, the best spectacle of the sunray adorned dial.
Ref. IW371610
IWC manufacture calibre 69355
IWC Schaffhausen made the right choice when decided to go with an in-house movement for the chrono Portugieser. Many voices expressed the opinion that the statute and price of the historic pieces deserved a manufacture movement.
IWC manufacture calibre 69355
The Calibre 69355 is part of the IWC’s 69000-family. The mechanical automatic chronograph movements do not feature a chrono hour totalizer nor a date complication.
IWC manufacture calibre 69355
The 46 hours power reserve is depleted by a 28,800 vph / 4 Hz escapement visible through the skeletonised rotor weight and the “aperture” of the top bridge.
IWC manufacture calibre 69355
The chronograph mechanism is partly visible too –  the column wheel. You can easily observe the hand made perlage, circular Cotes de Geneve and the brushing.
IWC manufacture calibre 69355
The Calibre 69355 is nicely decorated. Not breathtaking, but for the price, one can not expect thousands of hours spent on finishes. The decorations are nicely made, a combination of machined and hand finishing.
Ref. IW371605
Final impressions
I am happy that IWC decided to go to an in-house calibre for this prominent collection. The new chronographs keep alive the heritage of the Portugieser family.
I was enchanted by the wrist feel and the lovely colour combinations available for the dials. Even if the silvered white dial with the golded accents is considered the “classic”, I was attracted by the blue accents. From the gold versions, the dark slated IW371610 is clearly a favourite. After some time spent with all the watches and some good thinking after it is hard to draw a single “winner”. All have a certain charm.
The Calibre 69355 offers a nice view on the back of the watch. I was satisfied by the movements behaviour: chrono feedback and ease of use. It is a good start of the new decade for the IWC and I am looking forward to what Watches & Wonders will bring. Since I have seen some prototypes, I am confident that you will be impressed.

The Big, Bold, and Brave
Zeyad Elsahn
Professor Nichole Frocheur
PHO-101
22 November, 2019
                                      The Big, Bold, and Brave
Tftftftftftftftftftftftftf! The sounds of M2 Brownings firing away at the civilians of the battle grounds in Vietnam. More than 3,000 are wounded, 600 dead. Fear and defeat fill the hearts of those who have lost their family members to this devastating tragedy. Without a soul present to record the losses of this historical time, rises a more than capable and courageous individual determined to expose to the world of these catastrophic events. Clipppp! A grenade is thrown causing a massive explosion with dirt and debris filling the grounds lowering the visibility of both sides of the battlefield. A hero with only the world left to document, arises from the slums of London’s Finsbury Park in 1935. 33 years later, Sir Don McCullin finds himself amidst the battle ground taking photographs of these frightened soldiers from the United States marines to Viet Cong’s political organization. Undoubtedly, it was McCullin’s unrelenting predisposition to capture these disheartening photographs and expose them at will that led to his paramount success even if it journeyed him to his own sacrifice.
McCullin’s Battle of Hue body of work was the most well-recognised body of work brought forth until today. This body of work consists of a slew of disturbing photographs that were taken in the broken city of Hue. These photographs were taken between January and March of 1968. Unfortunately, as grueling as it sounds, this was my absolute favourite work seen thus far from any artist. It was not only the content that he captured that made him different from other photographers, it was the choice that he made of whether or not he should give up and go home or walk onto a field surrounded by dead bodies and decide to stick around for the sake of showcasing to the world of these unruly circumstances. Its at that point where you are not simply just a photographer anymore, but this idol that teaches people of what our world is becoming. “We spent years photographing dying soldiers in Vietnam, and they are not going to have that anymore... you have to bear witness. You cannot just look away”...“Sometimes it felt like I was carrying pieces of human flesh back home with me, not negatives. It’s as if you are carrying the suffering of the people you have photographed”(“Hamilton’s Gallery”). McCullin states how it is difficult to look at these photographs and not feel anything; how their eyes just stare back at you and haunt you until you leave them. In Hamilton’s Gallery, it states: “McCullin took huge risks in order to take his photographs. He was threatened with a knife at a Muslim checkpoint in Beirut for having a Falangist press pass, blinded by CS gas during a riot in Derry, and wounded by fragments of mortar shell in Cambodia.” As part of this relentless expedition of life and death, McCullin was wounded from the aftermath of some mortar shell attack and thankfully recovered after having been almost taken hostage and could have easily been killed. It almost seems as if he does not value his life enough to stay away from the danger, rather, it is this stern drive and stubborn ego of his to continue even after being threatened with death.
McCullin’s second body of work analyzed was the HIV/AIDS Epidemic. This body of work is comprised of a careful selection of photographs taken by McCullin himself of the harsh and unbelievably troubling conditions for which surrounds the Eastern and Southern hemisphere of South Africa. This work was completed and compiled in the year 2000 where it was then showcased in a national gallery in Scotland. Again, with this idea of his to march out into the world and expose himself to even some of the most deadly aggravating diseases with no cures says something about his mission. He is a hundred percent convinced of his goal; to advocate to the entire world of how unacceptable it is to allow for these human beings to live in such distraught environments and about how something has to be done to relieve these victims of their helplessness and bring them into a world of light and love and care.
McCullin says:
I sat in England and I thought - what is the purpose of my life? I’ve been reading a lot about AIDS in Africa… I thought, I don’t want to sit in England looking at the beautiful landscape. I should be doing something.
McCullin believes that it is not appropriate to reject the health and well-being of others given that we are divided from each other and live in different parts of the world. Why should it stop me from caring about the welfare of others? Are they not human too? How can we sleep at night knowing that other parts of the world are filled with mass suffering and we can just sit here and bare no mind with our refrigerators stocked and wallets full?
McCullin further explains:
When I got to Africa, I found that it’s not a story just about AIDS. It’s a story about poverty. In a way, poverty is a war. It’s a disgrace; it’s abominable. To find people sleeping in darkened rooms, lying on the floor… finding people who have no medication whatsoever, no food, nothing, living in these intolerable conditions. It’s just unacceptable in terms of humanity.
McCullin’s genius is that like some wars, poverty is a type of war, in the sense that there is a struggle which manifests itself into this internal conflict. Meaning, although someone might not be physically fighting with others about a particular external conflict, this does not suggest however that anything less than a war is not seen as concerning. Suffering internally is if not as damaging, more damaging than struggling for external conflicts such as the annexation of land or gain of resources or money. McCullin puts aside these differences of not having any tangible connection to Africa and travels out of his way to widen the eyes of the world. This supports why he is massively successful; his capacity to raise awareness about serious issues around the world even if it means climbing out of his comfort zone just a little, or in his case, a substantial amount enough to get him killed.
In both bodies of work, they were quite similar in that they both portray danger and conflicts whether internal or external; either of a war between the United States and South Vietnam against North Vietnam and the Viet Cong, or some sort of humanitarian issue across the globe. Another similarity is that in both cases McCullin risks his life in order to reveal to his audience an excruciatingly honest selection of images of how the world is becoming far more destructive than could be imagined. Yet another similarity in both bodies of work were that he used gelatin silver process which was easily accessible for black and white film. A difference in McCullin’s work was that he used different technical choices to better outline the realities of what was happening at the moment. For instance, in one photograph, he might get a bit closer to his subject such as in the Shell shocked marine, Hue, Vietnam, 1968 photograph to better show the terror and fright in some of his subjects’ eyes. In another photograph, he might move further back in his photograph such as the US Marine hurling a grenade seconds before being shot through the left hand, Hue, Vietnam, 1968 (although it might also be because of the grenade part!). Another noticeable difference is that both bodies of work were shot in two different settings for obvious reasons depicting his willingness to travel outside of his bubble and interact with the unnecessary dangers that he could have avoided and chose not to. In terms of his technical style throughout his bodies of work, he strives to take mostly close-up shots and candids of exactly what the most imminently threatening photograph that could have been captured by his camera. He also used mostly either 20 x 24 or 24 x 20 inch film prints to emphasize the horizontal plane or vertical plane of his subjects.
McCullin states:
I've seen my own blood and broken a few bones, I've been hit, which isn't an entirely bad thing as at least you have a glimpse of the suffering endured by the people you are photographing. And in a sense, crumbling empires and war have been with me all my life.
McCullin’s strong sense of empathy is key to everything that he strives for. He uses this as a sort of fuel that just keeps him energized and going until he ends up there and takes what he came for. This type of dedication is not an attribute that can be found easily in just any photographer or photojournalist. It is something that is planted into the heart and allows for the roots to slowly dig deep in, much like a seed.
Notably, in one of McCullin’s books called
, Sean O’Hagan comments on McCullin’s statements regarding being called a war photographer:
There is a sense when talking to McCullin that he carries a great burden of loss and regret. He has, he says, seen too much in his lifetime and it has left its mark on him. He is recognised as our greatest living war photographer, though he bridles at the term. “Whatever I do, I have this name as a war photographer,” he says, ruefully. “I reject the term. It's reductive. I can't be written off just as a war photographer.”
McCullin discusses in this particular work about his numerous experiences when dealing with war all throughout his childhood. When he was little, him and his family were endangered amongst the attack of the Germany Nazis referred to as the blitz ambush. At such a young age, he was exposed to all of these real-life tragedies and it is quite clear of the impression made upon McCullin. This is what inspired him to feel a sense of commitment to put himself out there and expose the ill conditions of the aftermath of war and suffering.
John Swain, a British Journalist and writer states:
As Don found in war it is difficult to photograph people who are dying without violating their dignity, noted John Swain, Sunday Times foreign correspondent. But with a unique sensibility, he brings to his work among people living with HIV/AIDS in Africa a depth of experience and ethical standards built up over years of working as a photographer amidst the most heart-rending and raw situations. Every film that he exposes is from the heart.
This statement made by Swain interestingly explains how even though McCullin was super inclined to capture photographs of the dead casualties of the Vietnam War, it was without saying that it was a difficult task to have done without feeling a sense of guilt for not respecting this sort of bounds of privacy when the soul leaves the body. McCullin goes right ahead and takes these photographs knowing that many of these subjects won’t make it towards the end. And I think that above all else, there is nothing more deep and dark than to expose the natural process of death takes place, especially when it happens right in front of you knowing that there is nothing you can do about it except document it for the rest of the world to see. Therefore, McCullin’s success stems not from his content, but from his sense of responsibility that it is his duty to uncover to the world of what has been covered.

Bass Music Mix 30 – Kelly Twins
Tumblr media
A very quick intro now to the next Bass Music mix, by Bristol fixtures The Kelly Twins.  I genuinely rate these guys as two of the best DJ’s in Bristol – they have such deep record collections and good selection that you can watch them play in any situation, after any DJ, at any time and they’ll still smack it.  As you’ll see from the mix, which takes you from super deep house to dubstep in one smooth movement.  No mixcloud as they still have a 100MB limit and this is a luxurious 1 hour 50 minutes.  But you can stream and download from the player below.  Tracklist at the bottom.
(Mix artwork by Andy Musgrave)
Tell us a brief bit about who yous are n that, how you got into DJing.
We are the Kelly twins, (our surname is Kelly and we are actual twins), We have been DJing together for the best part of twelve years and pride ourselves on playing across the board, drawing influence from the past as well as the present and only ever playing things that we genuinely like. Since moving to Bristol from Plymouth seven years ago, we have played at a wide variety of nights and held down several residencies. At present we run our own club night which is called UFO, we are part of team Crazylegs, residents for the Bristol wing of RnB mecca So Bones and members of the Idle Hands family.
During the day, i (Sean) can be found behind the counter in the Idle Hands shop and work as a freelance writer for various publications including Trap magazine. My brother (Dan) is Bristol’s most cosmic purveyor of artisan foods and also finds the time to be an amazing dad to his little boy.
Music is more than just a hobby to us, it is something that we have been around since a very young age, our parents weren’t famous musicians and they couldn’t play any musical instruments, but they were both music lovers. Our dad was involved in the rave scene back in the day, so the music, the people and the culture was something that we were very accustomed to and intrigued by, We got our first set of decks at fourteen and gained our first residency when we were just 16, its something that we have been almost obsessively into ever since. What is the idea behind the mix – and what are your thoughts in general about putting mixes together, do you have an ethos etc.? Anything you hate in mixes?
The mix was recorded to promote the Idle Hands room at the forthcoming Hessle Audio party for Bristol Inmotion. Prior to recording it, we considered the possibility of doing a laptop/ableton mix then realised that we didn’t actually know how to do that. So instead we did what we do best, turn up with a bag of records and wing it. The mix was recorded live and in one take, its starts at 107 bpm and ends on 140 bpm, it is an hour and fifty minutes long and features unreleased material from artists that we respect, including Outboxx, Behling, Hackman, October & Borai, Atki2. It is a true representation of what we do as DJs and reflects exactly where we are at musically.
Society in general is becoming increasingly dehumanised, automated telephone lines, self service checkouts have become the norm. When it comes to mixes, we like to know that an actual person has recorded it, not a machine.
A quick nudge of the record, a mix that wavers slightly, a crackly, dusty old record might be mistakes to some people, but for us, these things add a certain amount charm and some much needed honesty to a mix. As things become more and more digitised and superficial, we feel that this human touch is more important than ever.
You and your bro are known for being tight DJs on the Bristol circuit. Of the many ‘big names’ you’ve played with, who has stood out to you?
We try not to get too sucked into the whole hype thing and tend to take every DJ at face value, regardless of their status. For us its not so much about how ‘big’ the DJ is, it’s more about what they play and how they play it. Some DJs, however are truly worthy of their hype.
Jackmaster always smashes it, as does Ben UFO. Both are technically amazing and know how to work a crowd but more importantly for us they always bring a real varied selection and aren’t afraid to take risks.
A few other artists that have seriously impressed us over the last few years are Funkineven, Actress and Kyle Hall, all three have developed very unique styles of their own, their tunes are instantly recognisable and even as their reputations build they remain uncompromising with what they do. We really respect that.
Some of our favourite DJs to play alongside and some of the DJs that have made us dance the most are local Bristol guys, most of them our friends. Idle Hands bossman Chris Farrell always plays a killer selection as do Kowton, October and EFA. We love hearing music we haven’t heard before, so DJs like Andy Payback, vast & Bulbous and the Falling Up crew always stand out for us because watching them play is an education.
We would much rather be sat in a pub watching those guys play to us and the bar staff, than in a packed club watching that months hype DJ playing tunes we have heard a million times before. We can appreciate why people do like that, it’s just not our thing.
How do you feel about the Bristol scene at the moment – healthy? In a state of flux as dubstep waxes and wanes?
Coming from Plymouth which doesn’t really have a music scene, we are still very much excited by Bristol. It’s positivity and diversity is something that we continue to be very appreciative of. So for us the Bristol scene has always been healthy.
It has changed a lot since we have been here, in our opinion for the better. Clubbers are more open to a wider variety of sounds now. There are dubstep DJs playing house, disco and boogie and house DJs playing garage ect. The boundaries between genres are becoming increasingly blurred, for eclectic DJs such as ourselves these are interesting and exciting times.
Wrongspeed. Talk to me.
Wrongspeed originally came about through a combination of mistakes and getting massively blazed. The idea is to literally play the record at the wrong speed. When things are pitched down and stretched out, there is more space in the tune so every sound is exposed. For a record to sound good on 33 when it should be 45 and visa versa, the tune itself must be exceptionally produced.
The way in which certain tracks when pitched up or down, can take on a completely different vibe and atmosphere is fascinating to us and it’s something we have been working into our sets more and more. The next time anyone buys a record, we urge them to give it a go. The results might surprise you.
How long would it take you to eat a yard of Jaffa cakes?
My housemate bought me a yard of Jaffa cakes the other day (Thanks Shanti), it has taken me about 5 days to finish them. Although if there was money on the table, i reckon i could polish them off in an hour. What is your favourite example of Farrellian Rage? Is the Farrellian Rage an occupational hazard of working in Idle Hands, and how do you deal with it – the tortoise-like neck-retraction? Or a cunning bit of filing… Chris is my boss but also a friend who i have known for many years. I have had some pretty shady jobs and as bosses go, he is definitely one of the best. But like all of us, he can have his stressed out moments. I find the best thing to do when Chris is in a rage is to put some reggae on and buy him a can of rubicon, half an hour later and everything will be sweet.
My favourite example of Farrellian rage did not involve any shouting or swearing, in fact Chris didn’t say a word.
It’s monday morning, we are both feeling slightly fragile after the weekends activities when a tie dye wearing trustafarian takes up residence on the wall opposite the shop and starts self indulgently banging away on his bongo with absolutely no sense of rhythm. Chris emerges from the office and stands in the entrance of the shop, he stares directly into the bongo players eyes and shoots him a look of utter contempt. Within about two minutes, the playing stopped and the guy left, never to be seen again. Chris’s eyes at that moment said more than a thousand words ever could.
What is biscuit face? Also when are you going to ride that bike you bought off a crackhead?
Biscuit Face is an old friend and an integral part of the UFO crew. He doesn’t come out that often because his face is literally a giant biscuit, his eyes are exclamation marks and he eats CDs for breakfast. Sometimes he can get a bit crumbly around groups of people and overcompensates by being obnoxious and leaving small pieces of himself on their bedsheets. He is a liability, but we love him..
I try not to feel too bad about buying the bike from a crackhead, i managed to get a proper bargain but didn’t quite give him enough to buy any drugs with. Im waiting until i have some stabilisers and a basket for the front until i start riding it. Probably best to give it a new paint job too. Shout outs, disses, ways for shorty’s to contact you?
Massive thanks to all the producers that were kind enough to contribute tracks for the mix, to Idle Hands for keeping vinyl alive in Bristol and for taking things back to the raw, to the DJs that inspire us and to our friends and family for their continued and unconditional support. Too many names to mention, but you all know who you are.

So, real life got in the way and all too soon I was thrust back in to the drudgery of every-day life. Actually, that’s unfair, as I quite like my job and being home with my cat and my own bed was very welcome. Anyway, after a bit of a hiatus, here is Day 6 of our travel diary.
After last night’s discovery of the gorgeous olde- worlde South Street Seaport area, we’d decided to abandon our plans to head all the way to the Upper East Side and instead we went back to South Street, and to the Paris Cafe for brunch, consisting of a Bellini, French toast and coffee. From where I was sitting, I could just see the top of the Brooklyn Bridge, out of the window, and the Stars and Stripes flag fluttering  proudly, in the bright sunshine and the light breeze. Bizarrely, there was a Manchester United football match on the TV, in the bar area. I almost felt like we should be watching it, to represent my home town, an’ all. We didn’t.

After yesterday’s unexpected snow, the city was gradually beginning to thaw, in the day’s bright sunlight. Dripping from awnings, scaffolding and street lights, the night time’s snow and ice was collecting in puddles on the ground and splattering the occasional unlucky bystander. After brunch we would tackle our nemesis – the New York City Subway ticket machine. Being a Sunday, I was hoping that there would be no queues and that we’d have time to read the on-screen prompts and figure out which coins were which, without just chucking a twenty dollar bill at it and hoping for the best. Once we’d found the correct way in to Fulton Street subway station ( to as easy as you might think ) we located a machine and set to work. We both managed to find the correct change and top-up our Metrocard and then we took a number 2 train uptown to 14th Street, to walk The Highline.

Water street, old & new
Lovely old Con Ed drain cover.
FDR meets Brooklyn Bridge
The huge variation in landscape, atmosphere and demographic from area to area of New York means that, often, a trip on the subway is just like having a bit of a sit down and then emerging into a completely different world. This can certainly be said of this journey. As we emerged from the subway and figured out which direction we needed to walk in (another ‘have we come out of the right exit’ situation – we hadn’t!) I was aware of the wider avenues, less built up blocks and lower buildings , compared to lower Manhattan. With such a huge variation and a wealth of different experiences to be had, in a relatively small geographical area, you can fully understand how many Manhattanites notoriously rarely, if ever, leave the place. We located where we thought The Highline began but as we approached the metal staircase, it became apparent that it was closed. The sign read ‘due to snow and ice’. This was really disappointing and meant that we had to come up with a plan B. We decided to make the rather long journey up to Times Square (28 blocks to be exact!). This is a journey that no New Yorker in their right mind mind wold decide to walk but being tourists, and British , and trying to save out subway rides, we confidently strode up 8th Avenue.
At the top end of TriBeca, we walked past a pet shop where we actually saw doggies in the window. Really small puppies were frolicking about, in what I would class as a rather small clear perspex pen. I’m pretty sure that you’re not allowed to do that in the UK and although all the tiny dogs walking about in shoes prove that New Yorkers are obviously animal lovers, I think their animal welfare laws may leave a lot to be desired.
Times Square was pretty much I remembered it. A couple of blocks of giant illuminated bill-boards, hot-dog stands, a sea of tourists and souvenir shops make for one of the most commercial areas of New York and it is still one of my least favourite. I’m glad we went but it’s really not a place I’d want to spend much time in. Finding ourselves near the top end of Broadway and the theatre district, we decided to have a walk up and down the streets. As we both studied and work in theatre, and I’m a big musical theatre geek, it would have been remiss for us not to. I had planned to find the Richard Rogers Theatre, which is showing the huge global sensation Hamilton, but we found the merch shop first. This could have been a huge finical disaster but I was very restrained and opted for just a classic black T-shirt and a pin badge. A little further down 46th Street and you can’t fail to see the glorious theatre, shrouded in the recognisable amber and gold , with various black silhouetted characters on each door. We were outside the home of Hamilton, An American Musical, and I was beside myself. If you’re not familiar with the show, shame on you! If you are, you’ll be as surprised as I was by the relatively small size of the theatre. It felt like there ought to be a huge neon sign proclaiming the accolades, awards, reviews and hype that have surrounded the show since it opened at The Public Theatre, but no, it’s just a theatre, albeit it with ticket prices listed in the lobby at $500 +. Seriously, who is paying this? It’s not even the original cast, anymore! Would I pay that if I had it? Well, yes, of course I would.

Stairway leading up from the stage door
I did not throw away my shot.
The room where it happens
After a few crazy-fan photos outside stage door, I took a moment to try and absorb some of the show’s legacy, and then we cut across town to Fifth Avenue and Tiffany’s.
As always, the place is stunning. The pure Deco design, the immaculate staff and the diamonds… Oh my goodness the diamonds! I sought out the the range that they designed in collaboration with The Great Gatsby, knowing that it included a few pieces set with massive yellow diamonds. According to the Tiffany employee who handed us a heavy-weight embossed  store guide, none of the items in Tiffany’s have prices on display. This is so that, on paper at least, every item is as priceless as the next. The theory being that if you fall in love with something, it as as priceless to you as any other item in the store, regardless of actual price. This is, of course, ludicrous, as only the top 1% of the world’s population (of whom, admittedly,  a lot of them probably do live in New York) would ever be able to just walk in to Tiffany’s and pick out what they want, without asking the price. This was my third visit to Tiffany’s and on the previous two occasions I’d bought myself a bracelet from their (almost) reasonably priced sterling silver collection. The bracelet I want to make it a trio was, unfortunately, beyond budget, so having a vague idea of the price and therefore not having to embarrass myself by asking, I headed to the stationery department and handed over my debit card, in return for a tiny Tiffany blue and gold pen. Don’t worry, I checked first that it was fully refillable. Once nestled in it’s iconic blue box with white ribbon bow, I carried it down the stairs and back out of the side exit, away from the vile barriers around the front entrance, to keep people clear of the neighbouring entrance to the Tr*mp T*w*r.

We’d decided to travel back via Grand Central Station and have coffee in the underground food hall. After the Tiffany splurge, my budget didn’t quite stretch to the iconic Oyster Bar. We took the Times Square shuttle to, funnily enough, Times Square and then the number 3 train back downtown to Fulton Street, popped into a little Italian restaurant, Il Brigante on Front St, for pasta and then strolled back to the hotel via Pearl Street. It was quite late by the time we got back so we spent the rest of the night relaxing, with our feet up. After such a trek, that day, we were glad of it.
