I used to draw and create all the time when I was younger - art was my visual outlet of expression, albeit I wasn't necessarily that good. But i've always been drawn to mixed media. Illustration and Photography

For this paper Zoe and I will mainly be working with Illustration and photography to create our online persona. I decided to do some research into how other artists and photographers have used forms of multi media to create unique imagery.

Ilias Walchshofer

Ilias Walchshofer uses both illustration and photography to create his artworks. His art consists of a range of photography styles (portrait, landscape, fashion, street) with simple white illustrations layered on top of them. I particularly like the images where he added the animals. He was able to show the different textures of fur or feathers through different drawing techniques. These images show that a simple illustration can change the context of an image by introducing something that wasn’t originally there. For example the image with the hay could have just been a photo of a man working, with the added illustrations it now looks like he is feeding the animals. Zoe and I will being doing a similar thing, changing a landscape photograph into more of a portrait photograph by adding a human figure.

Felipe Tomazelli

Felipe Tomazellli combines photography with illustration by drawing clothing onto people. Tomazalli uses more of a pop art, cartoon like style compared to the more realistic and subtle style of Walchshofer seen above. I like how Tomazelli is able to match the style of clothing with the type of posing and background emphasising the concept behind each photo. I noticed that the shadows and highlights are illustrated really well on each of the clothing pieces. This is something to think about when it comes to placing Zoe and I’s character into our photographs. Is she standing in the sun or the shade? Or is light hitting certain parts of her clothing? By adding realistic highlights and shadow to our character it’ll look more like she was really in the photograph to begin with.

Christoph Niemann

Christoph Niemann changes the contexts of photographs by introducing human figures. He illustrates the images in a way that make the figures appear to be apart of the image or creating the image themselves, almost like its a type of illusion. I like how Niemann is able to use such plain illustrations to tell a story and the viewer is able to learn simple things about the characters through their poses/actions. This is a technique Zoe and I can use when drawing our character into our photographs. We can think about the type of actions, poses and expressions our character uses in certain scenes to show the viewer more about her personality, attitudes and characteristics.
