Yoongi had an on going theory - now proven over many many times - that any and all problems he encountered could somehow be traced back to Jimin.

Beer missing from the fridge? Jiminie. His files mysteriously disappearing from his computer, replaced by a bootleg version of The Sims 3? Jimin. The Plague? Park Jimin, that fucking rat.

And once more, in a house party he had no interested being at, poor Yoongi found himself victim of the consequences of his ill-fated association with that god-forsaken gremlin, now smiling smugly from across the circle where his friends and a few acquaintances sat.

"Everyone knows the rules, right?" Jimin said, innocently like he wasn't the cause of Yoongi's on going demise "You spin the bottle and whoever it points to, you have to kiss!"

Yoongi snorted from his place in a chair outside the circle. At 30 years old, he was clearly above such childish games and would never submit himself to such humiliating and depraved behavior...

"I'm here! I'm here! Sorry I'm late!" he heard and he swore time stopped as you, of all people, sat within the circle next to a Jungkook, smoothing down your tennis skirt as you smiled "What are we playing?"

"Spin the bottle!" Jimin smiled grew, a mischievous gleam appearing as he peared at his frozen friend.

Your eyes looked around the circle, falling on Yoongi's a couple feet behind and he swore even the singular hair in his left toe stood up in alert "Yoongi's not playing?" You asked.

Jimin shrugged in despondency "Well, no-"

"Of course I am!" Yoongi threw himself onto the ground, sending a poor unsuspecting Taehyung flying out of the way with a whelp "I love this game!"

Yoongi did not in fact love this game. He loathed it.

They had played several rounds and his bottle was nowhere close to pointing at you. Instead, he kissed Namjoon twice and slapped Taehyung once for putting his slimy tongue out as their faces got closer.

Was he cursed, he wondered, the face of dispirited desperation, watching as Hoseok and Jin made out in a way that could only be described as disproportionately violent. What could he have done in his past lives that would lead to this punishment, the sheer torture of sitting across from you and not getting to kiss you? Had he not earned your affections? Did he not claim your love through the cosmical power of dibs?

Whatever. WhaTEVER! So it would be, he would die alone. A monk amongst 6 manwhores, a fortitude of loneliness, cursed to roam the earth in his loveless state...

Oh, it was his turn. He spinned the bottle thoughtlessly, mind still wondering about the implications of his slowly returning virginity due to solitude.

Oh.

Oh.

You looked up at him as the bottle pointed straight at your form all the way across the circle and Yoongi swore someone had to call 911 at the way his heart stopped. His condition - simptitis - was worsening by the second.

Someone wheel him into the emergency room - you were crawling across the circle, prowling really, your blouse dipping in a way that left nothing to the imagination, and trust him, he had imagined!

You stopped, kneeling in front of him "Hi, Mr. Min."

Here are some symptoms to look for if you believe you could suffer from simptitis:

-accelerated heart beat

-exaggerated hand sweating

-inability to form coherent thoughts, not to be confused with just being stupid, which Yoongi was starting to think it was his case

Yoongi seemed to be displaying all of the above at the same time and when you softly asked "Are you okay with this?" All he could do was brace himself and nod.

If Hoseok and Jin's kiss was violent, this one was peaceful, slow, soft and way too passionate for a spin the bottle session. Bayeux Tapestry - hawking

1130 – On this date the medieval poet Baldric Of Dol died (b.circa 1050). He was abbot of Bourgueil from 1079 to 1106, then bishop of Dol-en-Bretagne from 1107 until his death.

Balderic's poetic works were written almost entirely while abbot at Bourgueil. The 256 extant poems are found almost exclusively in a single contemporary manuscript which is most likely an authorized copy. They consist of a wide range of poetic forms ranging from epitaphs, riddles and epistolary poems to longer pieces such as an interpretative defense of Greek mythology. A praise poem for Adela of Normandy describes something very like the Bayeux Tapestry within its 1,368 lines. Two themes dominate his works: desire/friendship (amor)—including paedophiliac—and game/poetry (iocus).

In his collection My Dear Boy: Gay Love Letters through the Centuries, the scholar Rictor Norton publishes Baldric's many letters to male lovers.

1899 – Francis Poulenc, French composer (d.1963); Poulenc was one of the first out Gay composers. His first serious relationship was with painter Richard Chanlaire to whom he dedicated his Concert champêtre: "You have changed my life, you are the sunshine of my thirty years, a reason for living and working." He also once said, "You know that I am as sincere in my faith, without any messianic screamings, as I am in my Parisian sexuality."

Poulenc also had a number of relationships with women. He fathered a daughter, Marie-Ange, although he never formally admitted that he was indeed her father. He was also a very close friend of the singer Pierre Bernac for whom he wrote many songs; some sources have hinted that this long friendship had sexual undertones; however, the now-published correspondence between the two men strongly suggests that this was not the case.

Poulenc's life was one of inner struggle. Having been born and raised a Roman Catholic, he struggled throughout his life between coming to terms with his "unorthodox" sexual "appetites" and maintaining his religious convictions.

Poulenc was profoundly affected by the death of friends. First came the death of the young woman he had hoped to marry, Raymonde Linossier. While Poulenc admitted to having no sexual interest in Linossier, they had been lifelong friends. Then, in 1923 he was "unable to do anything" for two days after the death from typhoid fever of his 20-year old friend, novelist Raymond Radiguet, Jean Cocteau's lover. However, two weeks later he had moved on, joking to Sergei Diaghilev at the rehearsals he was unable to leave, about helping a dancer "warm up."

In 1936, Poulenc was profoundly affected by the death of another composer, Pierre-Octave Ferroud, who was decapitated in an automobile accident in Hungary. This led him to his first visit to the shrine of the Black Virgin of Rocamadour. Here, before the statue of the Madonna with a young child on her lap, Poulenc experienced a life-changing transformation. Thereafter his work took on more religious themes, beginning with the Litanies à la vierge noire (1936). In 1949, Poulenc experienced the death of another friend, the artist Christian Bérard, for whom he composed his Stabat Mater (1950).

Poulenc died of heart failure in Paris on 30 January 1963 and is buried at the Père Lachaise Cemetery.

1917 – Alfred Freedman (d.2011), who was responsible for removing homosexuality from the list of mental illnesses, was born in Albany, New York. After earning his undergraduate degree at Cornell University in 1937, Freedman graduated from the University of Minnesota Medical School in 1941. He began an internship at Harlem Hospital but left before completion to enlist in the United States Army Air Corps. He left the service having attained the rank of Major.

After initially studying neuropsychology, Freedman trained in both general and child psychiatry, undertaking a residency at Bellevue Hospital. He became the chief of child psychiatry at the SUNY Downstate Medical Center, a post in which he served for five years, before becoming the first person to serve full-time as the department of psychiatry Chairman at New York Medical College, a post which he held for 30 years.

In 1972, Freedman was approached by the Committee of Concerned Psychiatrists, a group of young reform-minded doctors, who encouraged him to run for the presidency of the American Psychiatric Association. He won the election by 3 votes out of some 9,000 that were cast.

In his position as president, Freedman immediately supported a resolution offered by Robert L. Spitzer to delete homosexuality from the list of mental illness diagnoses. On December 15, 1973, the APA's board of trustees voted 13—0 in favor of the resolution, which stated that "by itself, homosexuality does not meet the criteria for being a psychiatric disorder" and that "We will no longer insist on a label of sickness for individuals who insist that they are well and demonstrate no generalized impairment in social effectiveness."

LGBT rights organizations have hailed this decision as one of the greatest advances for gay equality in the United States. Freedman himself believed that passing this resolution was the most important accomplishment of his one-year tenure as president. A second resolution called for an end to discrimination based on sexual orientation and the repeal of laws against consensual gay sex.

Alfred Freedman died in Manhattan on April 17, 2011, following complications after surgery to treat a hip fracture.

1946 – Jann Wenner is the co-founder and publisher of the music and politics biweekly Rolling Stone, as well as the current owner of Men's Journal and Us Weekly magazines.

In 1967, Wenner and Ralph J. Gleason founded Rolling Stone in San Francisco. To get the magazine off the ground, Wenner borrowed $7,500 from family members and from the family of his soon-to-be wife, Jane Schindelheim. In the summer following the start of the magazine, Wenner and Schindelheim were married in a small Jewish ceremony.

In 1995, Wenner found himself in the middle of a media storm when it was revealed that he was leaving his wife Jane after more than 25 years of marriage and had become involved in a relationship with Matt Nye, a former male model turned fashion designer. Wenner's outing, which may or may not have been at his own instigation, seems to have had little effect on his business empire, but it inspired a number of accusations regarding an alleged "Velvet Mafia" of powerful closeted gay men.

Although it had long been rumored that Wenner's marriage was an "open" one and gossip of his bisexuality was widespread and had been mentioned in gay magazines, in 1995 he was publicly outed—on the front page of the Wall Street Journal, no less—when the newspaper revealed that Wenner had left his wife of 28 years for Nye, a considerably younger man who was a former Calvin Klein underwear model.

Rumors of an alleged conspiracy to suppress the news began to circulate. Several journalists reported that the so-called "Velvet Mafia"—a coterie of powerful media, entertainment, and fashion executives who are reputedly gay—had threatened to pull advertising from any publication that wrote about the breakup.

1977 – John Gidding is a Turkish-American architect, television personality, and former fashion model.

Gidding was born in Istanbul, Turkey to an American father and a Turkish mother. He lived in Turkey until moving to the United States for college after attending Leysin American School in Leysin, Switzerland. He graduated from Yale University in 1999 with a BA in architecture, then the Harvard Graduate School of Design with a Master's in architecture.

At Yale he sang a cappella with The Society of Orpheus and Bacchus, and choral music with the Yale Glee Club, and at Harvard he sang with the Harvard-Radcliffe Collegium Musicum. He was voted one of "Yale's 50 Most Beautiful People" in 1999 by Rumpus Magazine, one of "Boston's 50 Most Eligible Bachelors" by The Improper Bostonian in 2002, one of "Atlanta's 50 Most Beautiful People" by Jezebel Magazine and as one of Atlanta Homes and Lifestyles's "Emerging Talent: Twenty Under 40" in 2008.

He is openly gay and, as of August 2013, married to dancer Damian Smith.

Gidding started modeling in 2000 as a graduate student, performing runway shows for Armani, Gucci, and Hugo Boss before being represented by Wilhelmina Models in New York City. He's also been on the covers of numerous romance novels.

Gidding moved to New York City where he started John Gidding Design, Inc. after working for two years as a landscape architect for Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates.

Gidding's start in television was with the ABC Family TV show Knock First, where he and three other designers took turns making over teenagers' bedrooms. Designed to Sell (Giddings' previous show from 2006 to 2011) was canceled in early 2011 but still airs repeats on HGTV, and Knock First is still running in syndication internationally.

1990 – Michael Sam is an American football defensive end. He attended the University of Missouri, where he played college football for the Missouri Tigers football team for four years. Recruited by a number of colleges, he accepted a scholarship with Missouri. He was a consensus All-American and the Southeastern Conference Defensive Player of the Year as a senior.

Sam is the seventh of eight children born to JoAnn and Michael Sam, Sr. His parents separated when he was young. As a child, Sam watched one of his older brothers die from a gunshot wound. Another older brother has been missing since 1998, and his other two brothers are both imprisoned. A sister who was born before him died in infancy. At one point in his childhood, Sam lived in his mother's car. He was once accidentally maced by police who were arresting one of his brothers.

Sam argued with his mother over playing football, as she did not agree with those pursuits. Sam often stayed with friends while in high school; the parents of a classmate gave him a bedroom in their house and had him complete household chores. In August 2013, Sam took the opportunity of a team introduce-yourself session to inform his Missouri teammates that he was gay, and found them supportive. He avoided talking to the media to avoid addressing rumors of his sexuality. He came out to his father a week before coming out publicly. The New York Times wrote that his father, a self-described "old-school ... man-and-a-woman type of guy", said "I don’t want my grandkids raised in that kind of environment." His father told the Galveston Daily News that he was "terribly misquoted", though The Times maintained that he was quoted "accurately and fairly."

On February 9, 2014, he announced that he was gay in an interview with Chris Connelly on ESPN's Outside the Lines, becoming one of the first publicly out college football players. If he is drafted in the 2014 NFL Draft or signed by an NFL team as an undrafted free agent, he could become the first active player who was publicly out in NFL history. Though he was projected as a third- or fourth-round pick in the NFL Draft, anonymous NFL executives told Sports Illustrated that they expect Sam to fall in the draft as a result of his announcement. Those statements caused National Football League Players Association executive director DeMaurice Smith to respond that any team official who anonymously downgrades Sam is "gutless". From jail, his brother Josh said "I'm proud of him for not becoming like me. I still love him, whatever his lifestyle is. He's still my brother and I love him."

On February 15, Sam returned to Missouri with the Tigers football team to accept the 2014 Cotton Bowl championship trophy at a ceremony held at the halftime of a Missouri Tigers basketball game at Mizzou Arena. It was the first visit to his alma mater since he came out as gay. Anti-gay activist Shirley Phelps-Roper and about 15 other members of the Westboro Baptist Church, an organization widely considered a hate group, protested his appearance. Students organized a counter-protest numbering in the hundreds if not thousands, assembling a "human wall" in front of the protesters.

In May, 2014, Sam was drafted by St Louis Rams. He celebrated with a kiss for his boyfriend Vito Cammisano at an NFL draft party. The kiss went viral.

Ji Ae's journey as a lesbian has been a trial and half on her own sanity. Being born in a country where she was seen as mentally ill for her likes and differences, alongside being forced to be submissive in a relationship. She couldn't of been any more surprised at the freedom she learned over time when they moved from Korea to America. The change was insane to her mind, being the eldest of two children - she learnt life of a different time before Eijun. Though not too far apart in generations she likes to think - she overcame a lot of forced homophobia, gaslighting and self-destruction to her own psyche to be how she is.

Sometimes jaded at the idea of ever having a stable woman in her life, she's had her fair share of meet ups.

Though they had always left a weird feeling in her life, as the fact that she was always used as someone's experiment, someone's 'bi-curious' phase, someone's little secret or a rebound. It was never a chance for her to fully blossom with love and desires to be forever with someone and it's these kinds of flings she kept going back to, because it was all she knew how to get well. Her GFs at the time were far and few between - beautiful in all their shapes and sizes. All educated on different matters of the LBGTQ+ lifestyle but it never really stuck.

She just never clicked with anyone and she was sure it was down to how she was bought up. Conflicting emotions and thoughts, different ideals and wants in the results of something two people should be thriving for together.

Ji Ae's first lesbian experience was at a school trip - she was around 13. She had her first kiss with a classmate, Seung. They didn't speak after it for a good month, shame was deep in their veins but after a while and a promise to never speak of it again together, they returned to be best friends. Though this soon broke when the Davis' moved to America for good.

Between here and till 17, Ji Ae had several identity crises about who and what she liked. Fighting her own mind and heart and ploughed into education. She stopped thinking about her sexuality and had a breakdown about it. Intervention of her Parents got her head straight - after all, it wasn't as if her parents were strict asian parents nor about to throw her on her ass at 16. Instead, it made the whole family go to a therapy group to help with communications. This year was the most important to Ji Ae as she finally focused on herself and her mind, healing and learning about everything she could have the western's more openness of being different.

At 18, she met her second crush, they dated for three months. No intimacy, but physical touching, hand holding and hugs in bed together - was shared.

At 19, she lost her virginity at a dorm-party. She was in a threesome with one other woman and her girlfriend at the time. Being so drunk, she can't really remember it much at all but the pain of penetration was present and the v-card losing was thrown the next day.

From her twenties onward, Ji Ae was more or less accepting of herself. Being in a more open country and without the pressures of being forced into a box and category that wasn't her own, she thrived with her passion in career choice and her lover interests. Over time, she got more and more comfortable and now, she's at the point in life that she doesn't care - doesn't miss her old life, doesn't feel like she's failed anything or anyone at all.

She laughed when Eijun came out bisexual himself, and held him with her all her support. It was a beautiful moment she was glad he shared with her.

In her 30's she had several girlfriends and will often have one-night stands. Due to her workload and position it's hard for her to have anything long-lasting due to relationship demands and will turn herself into a jaded wall when it comes to arguments about it. Though she understands, it's hard to be there for someone that doesn't understand her job and passion for it but also thinks that she'll change anything for them just because they get together.

She knows she needs to work on it but it's just . . . Irritating.

Still, in her 40's now, she's been thinking of settling down for real. A person to share her apartment with, someone to just come home too and rest her head on their laps. That's all she's after now and it'll be hard, but she's never really gave up before… so she wasn't about to start that now.

helena is strong an independent young woman and believes women in their position must make the best of their circumstances.

the tsarina spent her youth at her grandparent’s palace by the nature high gardens this is where she developed a passion for the outdoors.

as a child and teenager anybody could had found the princess  horseback ridding every morning; running and taking archery lessons instructed by her fathers command..until this day she keeps herself grounded with nature.

from her earliest years she delighted everyone with her extraordinary beauty and vivacity, and was regarded as the leading beauty of russian.

she's a polyglot; fluent in russian german, italian, french, portuguesse & english. but also a polymath, quite brilliant. 

helena’s beauty was equaled by her cleverness, which she had in abundance. a true protégée of her grandmother and grandfather, she is a gifted manipulator who knew how to maneuver her way in court politics.

the tsarina possessed the tact and politeness that most people at court lack. while others are is blunt and often rude, helena was capable of exuding the courtly behavior and courtesies expected of a nobel - while still privately engaging in palace intrigues to increase her family’s power.

although carina had to develop many different facades depending on who she is trying to manipulate, she was shown to genuinely have a good heart, compassion, and empathy.

the tsarina is an absolute sweetheart to anyone &&. everyone who is worthy of her kind nature. she’s a gentle, quiet soul who doesn’t  like to cause damage or despair among anyone . however despite her kindness helena does have a backbone and will always stand up for what goes against her morals as a human being. this is why she can be very vindictive and carries the female rage. she doesn’t show her feelings too often, especially to those she doesn’t know. 

but nevertheless she loves to spend her times in the castle gardens, spending her time dancing and appreciating art. 

as she lothes the tsar, helena is plotting to murder him and become the sole ruler of russia. in the process she has taken multiple lovers to her bedchamber since the tsar lacks in giving her anything she truly desires.

2023 - thanks for the growth!

The refreshing part about this time of year is looking back. I write everything down in my calendar throughout the year, then at the end, it's like a little summary in the palm of my hands. Would you like to join me in looking back?

Spring

At the start of the year I was rather hopeful with a few new friends by my side, but unfortunately they didn't end up being the friends I thought they were. One of these friends even became my roomie for awhile, but that crashed and burned in less than a month with the police involved and everything. Lucky me.

After that fiasco I got even closer with my other friends, the kind of friends who show up and make the time. On another positive note, I joined my Strata Council in February and became the President soon after. In April I celebrated owning my home for a year with free club seat tickets to the Canucks game along with a gift card from my boss, go Canucks go!

Summer

My summer was spent working 6 day weeks between two jobs, having a few more shitty dates, and getting way too many blood tests. However, it wasn't all bad! I got to explore Whistler a few times, go to the Airshow with my family, travel to Ontario to visit my second cousins, and finally feel at home again in Harrison Hot Springs. It had been years since my grandma passed and our place at Harrison still didn't feel the same, but this year I brought a friend and I was able to find that connection once more. I miss my grandma, and I miss my grandad... but I cherish every moment now that I get to spend visiting my uncle because it no longer breaks my heart to be there.

Fall

This Fall I was still working 6 day weeks, but I did manage to visit Osoyoos for the weekend. Here I was able to rest and recoup, for a few days anyways. I got some edibles and topicals to help me relax AND I got a new ear piercing! I even managed to nap, how crazy is that?!

Having two jobs wasn't all bad though, I really enjoyed the experiences I've had with my catering crew. I even got to attend an award show this year and met some actors from Virgin River, the 100, and a few Hallmark films. Another cool event was hosted on a massive yacht, I want a yacht now.

October also pulled at my heart strings when I got to reunite with an old friend. It's amazing how much time can pass, but your feelings remain.

Winter

December has been a big one for me, as I'm a Sagittarius and this ol' gal turned 30 this year. It meant everything to me to be surrounded by friends & family on this memorable day. Last Friday my dad took me snowshoeing and then we met up with the rest of the fam jam for dinner. Then Saturday night I met up with 9 of my close friends for drinks and appies before we headed into downtown to party. I don't know how we did it, but we celebrated until 6am. We were straight wildin' out there! I am beyond grateful for my friends and family that made my celebration special, and I'm happy to say that I even met some boys. I know, how scandalous!

This month has more to come with Christmas events, but I am grateful for the year I've had so far... even if it was really testing me at times.

As I sit here listening to LOTR music, it reminds me how much of a journey life really is, and how it's supposed to be. This year I got a heartfelt reminder of how important it is to make time for loved ones. Between Ontario and Harrison I realized how grateful I am for everybody in my life, and how truly important it is to make the time.

Make. The. Time.

Another important message I got this year was health. I tried to focus on my fitness this year but it really took a back seat to stress, illness, and anxiety attacks. These are things that I will be working on in 2024. BALANCE IS KEY! I know this, and yet I failed. It's okay to fail, but you have to acknowledge it in order to make the necessary changes. Next year I hope to prioritize this more, because that's exactly what needs to happen.

Balance. Is. Key.

Through and through I can say that this year was challenging but also hopeful, and I can see my growth as I repeat situations and react differently. I'm still happy with who I am and where I'm headed.

Clara Sola

This is quite an interesting film ambiented in Costa Rica, which makes it a welcome viewing because we rarely get any films from that part of the world, it is shown and released in London more than a year after #LFF2021, better late than ever, but frankly I don't understand why the delay given the quality of the film.

Summary: saintly woman, which perhaps is just mentally ill, or both, comes of age in her late 30s with an all consuming sexual awakening.

Plot with may spoilers:

The plot develops in a small community in the middle of the jungle, people aren't rich but don't seem to have many wants, amongst them lives a woman, Clara, whose reputation as a healer channeling Virgin Mary ensures her family, led by her very old fashioned mother, Doña Fresia, has a little income from the miracles she performs (little things like curing cancer and the like).

Clara is clearly different, she is in her late 30s or early 40s, she walks with a slight unevenness and clumsiness which is explained in a shocking scene during which a health problem she has is dealt with swiftly by Doña Fresia, Clara has an ally in her niece, Maria, the daughter of her deceased sister, who is 14 and preparing for her big "quinceañera" party.

Clara talks in a way that leads one to presume she may have some learning or mental problem, but in reality she is very attuned to her surroundings, her horse, Yuca, doesn't do anything without Clara convincing her first, she talks to insects with an uncanny understanding, she predicts when it rains and in a scene it is implied that her emotions can create earthquakes.

We are being introduced to the complexities of this peculiar family when a handsome young man, Santiago, from a village close by, starts visiting the women's home to take Yuca to work for tourists and then back, he catches immediately Maria's eye, but unknown to everybody else Clara also starts to look at him with longing.

From this point Clara stops being the restrained solitary being she has been and starts to try new things: painting her lips, insisting in wearing nice dresses. like Maria's one for her big party, and, most explicitly, to explore her sexual urges, which embarrases her mum and Maria because she isn't shy about the matter.

Little by little Clara starts to get closer to Santiago, who is by no means attracted to her in the same way but he finds her endearing and interesting to talk to.

Clara in the other hand is clearly obsessed with him and this leads to events getting out of hand in very dramatic ways, but Santiago remains cooler and composed beyond his years, dealing with Clara's advances gently but unequivocally.

Clara is coming to hate her ongoing situation and all comes to a hasty reckoning when her beloved horse is being sold, she decides to push her away which leads to people claiming she may be dead in the jungle.

The final scene may shock religious people although it is portrayed as an accident, in any way it symbolises Clara finding her freedom.

Imagine if you woke up one morning and found out that you won the lottery? What would you do first? Would you tell your friends and family? Would you buy your dream house? Would you change your life? 

This was the scenario Alejandro Zuniga found himself in on July 18, 2014, when he found out he won 50 million colones in the National Lottery. 

Hello and welcome back to Sustainable Happiness, the podcast where we find how the environment and our personal happiness are intertwined. Today, we’re looking at a simple man living in Latin America. 

Alejandro Zuniga was an avocado vendor working in the central market in Cartago, Costa Rica. “Zuniga never had it easy. He’d grown up in shanty towns, quit school at 12 to earn a living, struggled with alcohol, and lost the love of his life at 20. He credited his daughter and the Virgin of Los Angeles, Cartago’s patron saint, with his winning over his addiction. ‘I’ve found that, out of suffering, something positive grows,’ he said. ‘Sometimes a little sadness is beautiful.’” 

It was in these circumstances that Zuniga found himself with the opportunity to change everything. 

It was 8:30 P.M. when Alejandro Zuniga’s phone rang. He remembered the day with perfect clarity. His friend he worked with at the Cartago market called him to tell him the news. “You’ve won the lottery!” his friend shouted. He had purchased the winning ticket and was now about to receive 50 million colones / around $80,000 in the National Library. 

“I thought it was an ugly joke,” he recalled. “I was down to my last eight dollars.” 

But the next day Zuniga came to the market and was met with a standing ovation. 

At 56-years-old, Zuniga had been a fixture at the market, showing up every day to sell avocados, socialize, and try out a new joke. Everyone knew him. Whenever any of the 60 or so other vendors fell ill or had a family emergency, it was Zuniga who passed a collection box to help. He organized weekend trips to cheer on the city’s beloved soccer team. He was a charismatic friend and a natural leader. Now that he’d struck it rich, his fellow vendors assumed he would leave them for a more affluent life. 

But Zuniga surprised everyone when he showed up to the market the next day as normal.

Outwardly, Zuniga appeared no different. Inwardly however, he had quietly given away his fortune. A million to the friend who had sold him the ticket, another million to the food stall owner who fed him during tough times, and another million to a market beggar. The rest he gave to his mother and the four mothers of his seven children. Within a year, he had given all of his won money away. He was back to being broke – a state that would have broken another man’s spirit. 

But Zuniga said, “I couldn’t be happier.” 

How was that possible? 

– Costa Rica –

The answer to this question is linked to Zuniga’s environment: the geographical and social policies of Costa Rica. 

In Costa Rica, the people have found strength in family, faith, peace, equality, and generosity. Additionally the geography and smart social policies – such as Costa Rica’s adoption of universal health care – have blended together to create the perfect recipe for enjoying life day to day. This has all been put together to create happiness for all people, as we can see through Zuniga. 

Consider Zuniga’s circumstances. At the time of his lottery win, he had no car, no expensive material items, no fine clothes or big electronics. But he didn’t need any of those things for him to obtain happiness or a sense of self-esteem or fulfillment. Zuniga’s work life afforded him an optimal six hours or more of social interaction when people he liked, and he lived in a country that, for the most part, believed in supporting every citizen. 

“Costa Rica’s social system takes care of most people’s needs,” said Mariano Rojas, a Costa Rican economist and happiness expert at the Latin American Faculty of Social Sciences Institutes in Mexico City. “It leaves them feeling safe, comparatively healthy, free of most of life’s worries, while providing an environment where most people can still make a living.” In countries like Costa Rica, social connections, family gatherings, and an ability to create happy moments and laugh at adversity seem to make up for a lack of income. People don't get into the trap of overworking, overspending, and under socializing. As a whole, Costa Ricans are driven primarily by high levels of social support from one’s family, generosity and trust, a healthy life expectancy, and a sense of freedom to live out one’s values. 

Evidence shows that over the past six years, the World Database of Happiness has consistently ranked Costa Rica first among the happiest Latin American countries. It has the highest literacy rates and lowest corruption rates. Additionally, it is home to one of the world’s longest-lived populations on the Nicoya Peninsula, and is on its way to becoming the first carbon-neutral country on Earth. In short, Costa Rica produces longer and happier lives for less money than any other place in the world. 

Indeed, Costa Ricans excel in happiness and finding joy in their every day. 

What are some of the systemic factors and policies that contribute to the happiness of people in Costa Rica? 

Well first off, one factor that contributes to well-being is Costa Rica’s mandatory ruling for all children to be enrolled in primary school. As early as the late 1800s, Costa Rica has made primary school mandatory and free for every child, especially girls. 

At the same time, the nation invested in clear water for rural villages while resulted in a steep decline in fatal childhood diseases such as cholera and better assuring that children’s lives got off to a healthy start. 

The 1940s brought universal health care and social security. Eventually, even the most remote country villages had a health outpost to serve everyone from pregnant mothers to infants.

Lastly, Costa Rica was the first Central American country to allow same-sex marriage in 1971. 

All of these factors have added together to create a safe and happy country for its people.

So what can we do with this information? 

Lessons: How to Live like a Tico 

Happiness is explained by: social support, freedom to make their own life choices, and a culture of generosity. 

1. Develop daily social rituals. 

People are happiest when they socialize with people for five to six hours. 

2. Enjoy special “little” days. 

3. Establish a weekly family ritual. 

4. Eat together at work. 

Refuel bodies and souls. 

5. Try a daily dose of humor. 

6. Practice your faith. 

7. Eat six servings of fruits and vegetables a day. 

8. Shop for groceries daily. 

Get your daily fix of social interaction, physical activity, and fresh produce by walking to your local grocery store. 

9. Embrace generosity. 

10. Boost happiness in the workplace: the Cartago Code. 

Start every day with a greeting, use nicknames, turn competition into cooperation, create a community, never pass up a joke, and trust one another.

Wednesday 6th July 2022, 14th Week of Ordinary Time is the feast of St Maria Goretti (1890 - 1902). Italian. Virgin and Martyr. Maria was barely twelve years old when she was attacked by Alessandro Serenelli, a 19 years old man who tried to rape her. Maria resisted fiercely.  Alessandro stabbed her to death.

Maria forgave him in her death bed. Alessandro spent 27 of 30 years in prison. Maria appeared to him in a dream and brought him flowers. Alessandro Serenelli was in the audience at the Vatican when Maria was canonized in 1950. He later joined the Capuchin monastery.

St Maria Goretti is the patron saint of purity, young women, rape victims and youth.

In her liturgy, the Church teaches us that God is the source of innocence and lover of chastity.

Jesus summoned his Twelve disciples. Who are the Twelve disciples today? Historically, the Twelve disciples represent the Twelve Tribes of Israel.

In the Gospel of today, we see the rollout of God's Plan. The Twelve Tribes became the Twelve Apostles. The Twelve became the beginning of the Seed of the Kingdom, the Church. The Church is the Seed of the the Kingdom of God on earth. (CCC 671).

The Kingdom of heaven is not just at hand. It is here. We are the New Israel.  Our mandate is to take authority over unclean spirits, to drive them out and to cure every disease and every illness and to preach the Good News to everyone on earth.

"Go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. As you go, make this proclamation: ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand." (Matthew 10: 6 - 7).

Jesus had a magnificent obsession for the Kingdom of God. Jesus wants you and me to develop such an obsession. Various opposing but not contradictory statements describe the Kingdom:

#1. It is here and now and there and then.

#2. The Kingdom is immanent and transcendent.

#3. It is visible and invisible.

One thing that is absolutely clear and certain is that everyone is expected to be involved in bringing about the dawn of the Kingdom. How?

Every single thought, every single word and every action either contributes to the coming of the Kingdom of God or the delay of it. The Kingdom of God comes through your thought, word and deed.

"The kingdom of God is close at hand: repent and believe the Good News." (Mark 1: 15).

The Church is the Guardian of the greatest mystery of the Kingdom of God:

"It [The Eucharist] was to extend the graces of My Incarnation and earthly life to all of My disciples, to My chosen friends, until the end of time. So much of what I held in My Heart when I instituted this Sacrament has now been forgotten, or obscured, or deliberately contradicted. This is what causes the sorrow of My Eucharistic Heart.
