why are so many vls fans still so into violence & gore

Like Thorfinn's character is a caricature of toxic masculinity and societal pressures to act as a man. He is seeking revenge for his father, he is actively extremely violent, he murders with no thought, it's the whole shabang all starting at the age of six (which seems utterly ridiculous, but that's part of the point!) But so many ppl just say he's cool and badass for it?? Like that's a child..just a baby

But then ofc we have season 2 (peak btw) where Thorfinn goes through the most change. The way most (specifically male) fans react to this are divided into 2 sections.

Claim that Thorfinn is 'based', say 'I'm him', and overall just connect this progression w just self improvement and becoming a better person and not to the non-violent ideals now placed in the character. [the problem w this interpretation is that many of these fans still praise the violence of the show! they praise the exact thing vinland is against.]

2. Say that Vinland 'fell off' and that it sucks now bc there's no longer violence and wars (or at least, not as many) [the problem w this is more obvious. They are so violence addicted that they don't even realize the anti-war ideas the show has been slapping in their faces the whole time. vinland saga isnt a shonen anime made for fights. get over it!]

Either way, these types of responses just don't understand the purpose of the show because they are, at the end of the day, too into anime fights and gore and I really don't understand it. Is there a name for this phenomenon? stupid man syndrome?

Do you make your bed?

Sometimes yes, but by that I mean I half fold/half bundle up the sheets and toss them on top of my pillow. So no, not really 😅

I’m currently a certified pharmacy technician. I used to be the manager but I had to step down when I went back to school cause I couldn’t be full time anymore.

If you could go back to school, would you?

Here I go with my long winded answers again 😅

If we’re talking go back in time to when I was younger and in school then yes. I fear I peaked in high school, and with my current knowledge of life I’d do so many things differently.

If we’re talking go back to school now for a career change, that’s what I’m currently doing. I’m not using my first degree, so I’m in school to be an X-ray technologist and I hope to move up to CT or MRI afterwards.

If we’re talking go back to school now just for funsies, then yes again. I love languages and wish I could properly learn so many! I took Italian in college which I picked up pretty easily cause it’s so similar to Spanish (my first language), ma capisco più che parlo. Non ho nessuno con cui praticare.

Can you parallel park?

Yes but I get so nervous about hitting other cars 🙈 I’d prefer not to do it.

A job you had that would surprise people?

I think what’s most surprising is that I’ve only ever had one real job. I’ve done volunteer and community work, and some research stuff but a formal wage-paying job I’ve only had one of. I’ve had many position changes within that job, though.

Do you think aliens are real?

I don’t rule out the possibility of advanced life on another planet but I’m also not thinking about it on the regular.

Can you drive a manual car?

Definitely not lol. I didn’t learn to drive until I was 26 😬 and I’m turning 29 this year…

Honestly it’s BLs, cause of the stigma around it. But if I’m around strangers I can talk about it! I met so many nice BL fans at an event back in February. It’s just hard to find people who get it.

I’m scared of heights but I can be brave sometimes. I really don’t like slimy things like slugs and snails or boogers.

I love swimming! I was actually on my high school swim team! I did the IM which is all strokes but I also did the Butterfly 🏊🏼‍♀️ and my team started the school’s synchronized swimming team too! 🙆🏽‍♀️🌊

I used to love going to the movies but I haven’t been back much since covid. And I don’t really seek out older movies to watch. But I love romance so stuff like Pride & Prejudice and Fools Rush In. And my family loves Disney so Tarzan, and The Incredibles are my faves! We rewatch a lot of Disney films all the time.

Coffee or tea?

I very much enjoy tea but I seldom drink it. I should change that 🤔 and I’m unfortunately chronically tired and need coffee to survive 😞 but I don’t get the complex drinks, just a regular coffee, 2-3 cups a day.

just reblogged a post about how furry hate is cringe and now im thinkin. We all know that a huge element of furry hater culture is queerphobia and ableism and all that, but I posit this:

Furries practically embody the idea of unfettered self-expression.

The tide *seems* to be starting to turn these days, but there is a very widespread culture of insecurity, intertwined with this protective shell of irony that allows people to cautiously non-commit to self expression that could prove socially risky.

Furry fundamentally flies in the face of all of that.

You have neon dogs and fantasy creatures, entire made up species that exist solely to express someone's self, drawn at any level of skill and heartfelt besides. The creativity itself is valuable to the community, and the self-expression is celebrated wholeheartedly.

It's not a social death sentence to be weird as a furry, to be an outlier or to set yourself apart. Furries are infamous for being often very openly kinky, and it's true! You don't have to be kinky or even horny to be a furry by any means, but the furry fandom is notably a very sex positive space.

And I think that gets people uncomfortable. Not just the sex positivity, but the bright and loud lack of shame. When you're so used to needing to undercut yourself to fit in, seeing people let their freak flag fly high and proud is uncomfortable. That's a violation of the social contract. It hits a weird and sour note that spurrs them on to decry furries as cringe freaks.

I'm not saying all furry hate or every furry hater is just insecure, but I think that's a more significant element than tends to be factored in, especially in today's culture of callouts and overcautious hesitation to be "problematic" lest you get harassed for god knows how long.

ppl who think billy hargrove not being racist means he's ooc either 1) dont understand how writing a consistent character works, or 2) believe that being racist is strictly a personality trait, and dear god i hope it's the former.

see, the beautiful thing about fanfiction is that you can place your blorbos in a whole bunch of Situations, and if you're a good writer--or at least understand the character well enough--it wont be ooc even if their Situation is diametrically opposed to anything they might ever do in canon.

billy is a metalhead in canon, but you could write an au where he's in a pop music teen boy band with steve and eddie and argyle and jonathan. as long as billy remains loud and proud about his music taste, plays his (pop) music loud enough to drown out anyone he doesnt want to hear talking to him (itd be funny if it was his own voice in the song too lol), is pretty mean on first impression, and still generally has a lot of friction with the people around him, i wouldnt actually drop the fic bc i found it ooc. as much as your music taste can say a lot about you, if you underdstand a character well enough, keeping the rest of the things about that character consistent and giving an understandable background to all the things that might be different at first glance, then it's not really out of character at all.

so if we're talking about canon billy being ooc for not being racist, youd really have to read the fic. a billy who, immediately after the incident at the byers house, gets a stern talking-to from max and/or steve (and/or neil? which, doubtful, but idk how billy haters write fics lol) and then turns around to grovel at lucas's feet and pronounces to the world that racism is wrong and he's learned his lesson once and for all and also he'll never be mean to any of the kids ever again? yeah, i would call that ooc.

a billy that gets dragged through hell and back and sees and understands that his violent actions not only have consequences but reflect those of his own abuser's at home? or a billy that ends up reluctantly becoming fond of the kids as he inadvertently has to shepherd them through tunnels with steve and beat up demodogs so he can bring maxine home safe? or a billy that meets patrick from the basketball team and recognizes the kinds of bruises he sees in the locker room on him bc he has his own, and then learns what it means to see someone as a person? or even a billy who gets called the f-slur consistently by his own father, learning to see bigotry in other forms and recognizing it in himself, gets given the emotional support and physical safety by joyce or jim or steve, and in the end consciously chooses to be different than his father now that he has the safety to do so?

if any of those billy's go up to lucas after everything and looks him in the eye and apologizes and says he's trying to do better, especially if he does it in a way that's rough around the edges--i wouldnt call any of those ooc. it's all hard-won. it's all still billy, but he grows as a character, which i assume is the goal in general when writing characters.

this brings me to the second point. this is the one i personally hc, but i dont think it's ooc to assume billy's less maliciously racist, and more racist as a way to (unconsciosly) parrot his obviously bigoted and domineering father. billy's probably racist in the way most people dont realize they have racial bias (i would say most white people, but im aware this is true for poc of all sorts assuming things about other poc--and even about themselves with their own race and culture--simply through lack of personal experience, knowledge, or being othered by society/their environment to the point of internalized self-hatred), and probably more grievously again bc his father seems like such a bigot. i personally think the racism comes in part and parcel of the way he manhandles max and gets aggressive at first sign of his losing power in a situation: because that's how his own father does things to exert power over billy. he's acting the only way he's seen exemplified in front of him. (let's remember he is a teenager who has been in an abusive environment his whole life, with no confirmed emotional support of any kind.)

i hc billy to be about as racist as he is terrifyingly repressed after being called the f-slur and insulted for being effeminate by his father all his life. all that insulting about being effeminate probably also means he comes off as sexist too. he doesnt necessarily want to be any of these things, and would consciously learn to be better once he's made aware and has people in his life he wants to be better for, but he is these things as an unfortunate byproduct of the way he grew up.

but we saw billy try to protect his mother as a child, and face up to the mindflayer--a monster that possessed him, that he had no clue about or any context for bc he didnt know about the upside down at all--in order to protect el. it's not a far leap to think he would want to change and protect, to stand up and be better, if given the chance and the support.

so i personally hc that while billy might do racist things, he is not, as a trait, inherently maliciously bigoted. my way of viewing billy has always been that anything bigoted he might do or think stems from his father, and if he gets given support and safety away from his father, i think billy would choose to be different from his dad and do the hard work of extracting himself from that bigotry and becoming better as a person. (see also: homophobic steve from s1 turning into robin's biggest cheerleader in s4.)

it's all about the context, and things like music taste or racial bias can change if your context changes. but if most of your other character traits--your aggression and peacocking, your tendency toward sarcasm, penchant for overt flirting, your determination or bravery or recklessness, etc etc--if those stay consistent while some other things change, and you get context for the changes, then it's not ooc.

now, how does this relate to my 2nd point? if you read all that context and decide that it's still objectively ooc simply for the fact that billy's not racist, then you're viewing racism as an inherent personality trait--everyone that ever does anything racist is automatically racist to the bone and cannot change.

i find that worrisome.

okay it's one thing if you're the poc in question being targeted by the racism. ive been talking about billy this entire time, but i also 100p believe lucas has every right to never want anything to do with billy ever again. he can say no to any apology he might receive. he's protecting himself and that's valid. if someone's racist toward you, especially aggressively, you obviously have every right to never want to have to do anything with them ever again. in real life situations, protect yourself first.

but i want to caution those who think that racism is a character trait to remember that you can do racist things and not consider yourself racist. my worry is that people ignore racist microaggressions to preserve their belief that theyre not racist.

taken as an example from my own life: if you're going to insist that a certain food from a certain culture is "weird" and then say over and over that you didnt mean it in a bad way but cmon you have to admit that it is a bit a weird, and then you get all uppity when i express my concerns and unhappiness about the way youre talking about how i grew up and defend the fact that youre right and the food is weird? yeah see that's shitty. all because you dont want to admit that maybe youve said or done something a little bit racist, cuz obviously youre not a racist, it's not one of your personality traits. you might feel better about defending your identity as not-a-racist, but in the end all you did was ignore what a poc was trying to tell you about how they felt, which is so frustrating to deal with as a poc.

yeah, bigotry can be a personality trait, but it isnt always. sometimes it's an action or some words coming from a person who doesnt realize that theyre being bigoted.

billy is a fictional character. you can interpret him however you want, and indeed, you can make him as nasty a racist as you choose to. you can write him as killing children if you want, seeing as how so many antis insist on calling him a child murderer (even though he's been a lifeguard so if anything he's saved children's lives--and this is not including how we see him on screen literally saving el's life, who is also a child).

also, if his racist actions made you super uncomfortable, it's perfectly okay to call him a racist and move on with your life. that's not a problem until you start harassing people for being racist because they like billy--then, like a microaggression, you become the problem because you're unilaterally deciding who is racist based off a fictional character, and youre harrassing a real life person for it. furthermore ive seen plenty of poc billy stans be called a racist by antis who insist that anyone who likes billy is a racist. again, you're just not listening to poc for some sort of fake moral superiority, which is not cool.

after looking at the environment billy grew up in and continues to exist inside, and his actions toward el and the way he used to treat his mother (before she left him), i choose to believe that even though the way he treated lucas was racist, he can step up and change if given the opportunity.

if you still think that it's not possible for him to stop being racist without it being out of character, please re-examine your own thoughts and actions, stay conscious about listening to people of colour, and remember that people who dont consider themselves racist can still do racist things. bigotry isnt always a character trait okay? it's the way you treat other people. it's not in any way out of character to believe--or write--that someone who's done racist things can change.

a little of both! I prefer to get it all done in order but if I'm stuck on a part I'll move onto a part I was excited to write to keep myself motivated.

nope, i am shameless. not really a pleasure, but when writing i am guilty of rushing through exposition and imagery so that i can get to the dialogue.

i think any trope can be good if it's written well, so there's nothing i cant stand when it comes to fandom in general. for eene specifically tho, it'd be the nerd/jock trope because im a kevedd hater fr (sorry kevedd shippers)

Everyone always asks for the Captains and Magic Knight headcannons (nothing wrong with that - always love them) but you rarely ever see hcs for our favorite supporting/up&coming characters :(

Would you by chance please do ‘relationship headcanons’ + ‘how protective they are’ or ‘how they let their guard down’ for Mars, Patri/Patolli, Licht, and Liebe?

MARS | the closet simp

after the first stage of the experiment thing that happened, he never once approached or talked to you

you were aware of the sideffects, so you had to understand the situation

whenever you were with him he always had those instances of sudden relapses

he described his headaches as the worst

of course, you’d take care of him

he likes to swat your hand when u get touchy-touchy :((

but then the atmosphere shifts when you two are in the battlefield

he always finds himself eyeing your every move

when someone decides to attack you, you wouldn’t even notice because he’s always there, blocking their advances

accidentally get a scratch because of a spell that wasn’t even meant for you?

consider that person gone in a second ( a hardcore simp, wbk)

when he finally remembers things, he’d apologize everyday

seriously. he’s so guilty, that the first thing he say’s everytime the two of you meet is “im sorry”

he’d be more considerate, and his stares at you are no longer the cold hard ones, but the soft and loving kind

would randomly hug you

“hmm? is there something wrong, mars?”

he won’t reply, and instead he would hug you tighter while nuzzling his head on the crook of your neck

“i just missed you.”

“eh? but i’m with you everyday.”

“not an excuse not to miss you.”

PATRI/ PATOLLI | the tsundere

as the number one human hater leader of the eye of the midnight sun, he has an image to protect, so, of course, his focus is always on his plans

you like staring at him

when he feels your eyes on him and he’d ask why, you’d only reply with nonesense such as: “you’re just pretty to watch”

he’d automatically furrow his brows at this

“you think this is all fun and games, y/n?” 

just the tone of his voice is enough to make you shiver in place

“whatever, pretty boy” and then you’d leave him by himself before he blows a fuse

he would never admit it, but your compliments always make his stomach all fuzzy

doesn’t know how to deal with emotions so he just releases it out as anger (poor boy :<<)

he always feels bad when you’re the one he vents out on

after the whole elf ordeal, he’d become more approachable

always looking out for you

the kind of guy to tug the side of your clothes so he can walk near the street and you would be safe on the sidewalk

a diehard fan of holding hands

he just loves the feeling of how well your hands fit with his

still gets flustered when you compliment him, but with all of the hate + rage + demon gone, he’s more open and would compliment you back

he revels in your attention

melts on the spot when you caress his cheeks and plat a soft kiss on his temple

the first time you two kissed, he just captured your lips as you were rambling about something

he couldn’t help it! you’re just too cute in his eyes!

rip to all the ogling eyes staring at you tho, in a blink of an eye they’re as good as gone

“oh, patri! where did you go to?”

“had to take care of a few pests, love. shall we go?”

LICHT | the proud boyfie

mAN, is staring at this beautiful being even enough? if you only had painting magic like one of the other elves then maybe you would’ve made one already to honor such a perfect image

he’s very interested in the culture and “way of the humans”

you would think it’s weird at first, but then the way he smiles when learning new things is enough for those unsure thoughts to dissipate

so, of course you develop a crush first

you like daydreaming of him (oop, hopeless romantic spotted!)

he knows you’re looking at him with those loving eyes, but doesn’t say a word

what a sly, sly man

would tease you at first by always brushing your hands against each other when you walk

he’d act all innocent when you look back up at him, but in reality he’s laughing so hard at your impeccable personification of a tomato

but then you suddenly became close with all the other elves

especially rhya, cause ya’know, you relate with him being a lazy bum because you have your lethargic tendencies too

he’s not one to be jealous or anything

he just misses the attention you give him

sometimes, the elf kids would find him all slouched on tree with his chin resting on the open palm of his hand as he gazed at you two

definitely not jealous

but when you accidentally trip because of lil children running around and bruise your ankle slightly, he’d be there ASAP

would tend to your wounds and confess then and there

the bold type to kiss you on the spot after the confession (not that you mind sksksksks)

he likes to flaunt everything you do to everyone

sometimes the elves get tired of his incessant talks filled with “y/n, y/n, y/n, y/n, y/n…”

“i almost forgot, did you know that y/n unlocked a new spell yesterday?”

“WE KNOW. THAT’S THE 34TH TIME YOU SAID IT TODAY!”

what can you do, he’s just in love 🥰

LIEBE | the explosive dolt & a closet yandere

since he’s bakugou’s counterpart a devil and all that, his first reaction was a loud, “HUHHH?” when you confessed to him

genuinely believes you’re messing with him

because of his past, he doesn’t really warm up to the idea nicely

(by explosive, i mean def not bakugou it as sudden outbursts of his reactions) 

he’s the kind of guy to distance himself after you confess 

after some time, he’d just randomly talk to you

but because you’re a stubborn, prideful person who knows their worth (as u should! 👑) you don’t pay as much attention to them

at this, he’d notice you’re always with asta

he’s irritated that you give the ash-blonde magicless fool more attention than him

whenever the two would spar, you’d only clap and cheer for asta, causing the said boy to blush profusely, whilst you smile cheekily

who could blame you tho, asta’s been the one who consoled you when liebe outright rejected you by not speaking to you for so long

he likes punching asta, “hey! what did you punch me for, you jerk!?”

“eh, your face seems punchable or something”

it’s not like liebe’s jealous or anything

always grunts loudly and makes noise when you and asta talk

“why did you throw the whole pole beside us?! we would’ve been hurt!”

“eh, the place looks like it needs an extra leg or something”

no. he’s not jealous

he would confront and talk to himself through a mirror, and ask his self what the hell is wrong with him and why is he acting this way towards you

you accidentally walk in the bathroom as they speak of their pent-up frustrations

cue awkward silence

but since it’s too much, he’d bluntly confess to you when he’s had enough of your closeness with asta

whenever he can, he’d always have you beside him or near him so he can keep a closer eye on him

he’s just afraid to be attached to someone only to lose them in the end like what happened to momma licita 🥺🤧

“liebe have you seen asta?”

“eh, he must’ve died or something.”

And although it was never something I expected of you nor was it something you ever had to do obviously, I'm proud of you for telling me who you were and facing your fears!! And any possible haters, though I'd like to believe we've carved out somewhat of a nice little safe space for ourselves here on this blog lol The point is, I could go into another monologue explaining the specifics (believe me, I've already deleted a lot of unnecessary stuff 😂) but I think the thing I can't stress enough is how touched I am you feel so safe here. It means so much to hear that, you don't even know. And, at the same time, it upsets me just so deeply ONLY because that ties in with everything we talked about before and how hostile fandom spaces have become. Spaces that are meant to be our safe spaces that have now become war zones, and that's just counting shipping wars. Lord knows how much hate there is on the internet. But I guess that's all the more reason to grab a megaphone and try and beat hate and ignorance at its own game: be loud and stubborn.

Just like my big brother

As I'm watching After School Special, I'm reminded of something that really bothers me about SPN. On 2 occasions, Sam states that he always wanted to be just like Dean. In s3 Fresh Blood he says that he's been following Dean around since he was 4, trying to learn from him and "be just like my big brother", and in s14 Prophet and Loss, Sam says "After I've learned from you, copied you, followed you to Hell and back" like he wanted to be like Dean, and yet, the entire story of Sam is him NOT wanting to be like Dean?

Usually when they did childhood flashbacks, Dean is talking about how cool hunting is, and "the life " while Sam is talking about how he doesn't like the life and wants to be normal. We go through 15 seasons of Sam being very different from Dean in many ways. Often they clash, sometimes violently or to the point of breaking up, about how to handle different things. Their diets are the exact opposite most of the time, life philosophies, taste in music, movies, holidays... you name it! Sam has never shown in the show that he ever wanted to be like Dean, and I would have loved to have seen that he did.

In S11 Just My Imagination, is the closest we come to Sam wanting to be like Dean and their Dad, but it seemed more like he really just wanted to be with them.

Im not saying Sam never loved Dean, there's no doubt in my mind that he loves Dean every bit as much as Dean loves him, but I don't ever see Sam wanting to be like him. I don't think he's ashamed of him, yet he never tells Dean he's proud of him. This makes me sad.

In s8 Trial and Error, Sam tells Dean, he's not a grunt, hes a genius and the best hunter he's ever seen, and in s11 Devil in the Details he tells Lucifer that hes counting on Dean to come in and kick his ass, which is adorable because it shows Sam sees Dean as someone much stronger than he actually is. Dean can't kick Lucifer's ass any more than Sam can because they're human and Lucifer is, well, Lucifer.

Sam does think Dean is awesome and loves him beyond words, but I still don't find him wanting to be LIKE Dean.

If Sam and Dean were real people, I would say that maybe Sam just talks a good game, but deep inside, he really wants to be like Dean, but they're fictional characters so it's up to the writers to show this in some way, like Sam looking at Dean with deep admiration or pride (and not just when he makes a great shot in pool), or telling someone he wants to be like Dean when Dean isn't around, or thinking out loud "what would Dean do?" But we seem to always get young Sam annoyed and sometimes embarrassed about Dean.

Something I hate about After School Special is when Sam and Dean pass each other in the hall and Dean happily says "Hey Sammy!" And Sam doesn't respond. Sam's friend tells him Dean is cool and Sam says "He thinks so." This doesn't jive with Sam's speech in s3, but nothing really does, does it?

At the risk of sounding like a hater of either brother, which I am not, I am going to say i think the show has Sam and Dean trying to make the other more like themselves. Both have a "My way is better" attitude, and more often than not, Sam gets Dean to do it his way, even if it takes a while.

I dont want Sam to be like Dean, or Dean to be like Sam. I think their opposing views and reactions makes the story better and their relationship more interesting. I wouldn't mind if Sam had never said he had wanted to be just like Dean, but he did, so I feel a bit robbed that I never got to see it in action.
