wait IS jhy confirmed trans? i was interpreting that way but it seemed like translation confusion when i read it. i'd be so happy if that was true ;o;
Short answer: JHY is definitely a woman, early translation confusion was largely due to the fact that Korean doesn't necessitate gendered pronouns as much as English, she is never specifically called transgender but her portrayal represents a lot of trans experiences and I choose to interpret her as transgender.
Long Answer:
Jang Hayoung as a character represents the webnovel catagory of 'transmigration,' wherein a character from 'the real world' wakes up in the body of a 'character' and must navigate their life. Jang Hayoung was a transcendent reborn into the body of Aileen Makerfield's 15 year old 'son' Aslan in the demon realm. To my understanding, Jang Hayoung's gender previous to her transmigration is unclear, it's possible that she was a cis woman in her first life. Hayoung (or Hayeong) is commonly from 夏榮 with the meaning 'glory of summer' and generally has a feminine connotation. Regardless, after her transmigration she has to face the dysphoria and challenges of 'spiritually' being a 23 year old woman in the body of a 15 year old 'boy,' and the interactions she has with other characters are easy to recognize trans experiences in to me.
Throughout 'episode 43' her gender is discussed a lot. YJH who has little concept of transmigration calls Jang Hayoung a weak 'guy' and a 'rude jerk,' to which Jang Hayoung replies 'actually I'm a bitch.' It's also shown around this time that through the scenarios, transformation of the body is possible to the point of changing gender representation, as Yoo Joonghyuk takes on the 'Punisher' persona while enduring a punishment for rescuing Kim Dokja. Afterwards, Jang Hayoung says something to the effect of 'no matter what your body is, if you are a girl you are a girl no matter what' and YJH vehemently agrees with her, leaving Kim Dokja very confused. My interpretation of this scene is that YJH gains experience of what Jang Hayoung feels being seen as 'the wrong gender' because of her body when he presents as the punisher because he still feels he is the same person as before, but I've seen other interpretations of Transfem-coded YJH that also make a lot of sense.
It's also good to note that in Korean gendered pronouns are not used as frequently, so Jang Hayoung confused many translators because her use of exclusively feminine pronouns is not confirmed until the first chapter told from her third person POV, after which most translators switched their pronoun choices for her.
For me ORV's interpretation of JHY's transmigration falls into a lot of the transgendery feelings that I have. One time a girl in a psych class asked my professor why there were so many genderqueer autistic people when one of the major symptoms of autism is struggling with changes and I had to get on my soapbox of like, to be honest I feel like I never really changed but suddenly everyone else around me did. Like it was never important to me whether I was a 'girl' or a 'boy' because basically those were like teams to be on in elementary school and it didn't matter. But then I was growing up and it was kind of like... There was something just so soul crushing to me about the idea of growing up to be a "woman" as opposed to growing up to be a "man," as arbitrary as those labels can be it just does mean something to me. Choosing to be a guy and let myself orient my experiences and social life around that concept just feels right and makes it easier to be myself without being misunderstood by others. So for me the idea that someone with kind of reverse feelings from me who has always been a woman having to endure the experience of being in the role of a 'prepubescent boy' is pretty representative of A Transgender Experience even if that language is not specifically used. It's also a lot more compassionate than representation seen in other works, or even earlier in ORV itself, and I think my favorite thing was Kim Dokja being told he was a dumbass for thinking a woman wasn't a woman just because she was in a 'boy's body,' lol.

orv aladdin au! with kim dokja as aladdin (conman supreme), han sooyoung as fellow thief (also aladdin), yoo sangah as jasmine (trapped by her family), yoo joonghyuk as ysh's bodyguard
kdj 'cons' yjh into being distracted while hsy sneaks into ysh's room to steal jewellery and then ends up panic-flirting with ysh
jhw and lhs are there too! heewon is a robin hood steal-from-rich-to-give-to-poor and hyunsung is the guard that sort of lets her but also doesnt because its for a good cause. (poor guy has 'turns a blind eye to injustice' attribute canonically). on the other hand sooyoung is absolutely DECKED in the face when she tries to get into the treasury or any other place.
they're all friends and sort-of not, especially after hsy flirts her way into becoming co-queens with ysh.
lee jihye and kim namwoon! jihye is joonghyuk's squire (officially) and namwoon is also his squire (not officially) - dokja is some sort of weird uncle to namwoon (the aus where theyre distantly related are always funny to me) and if bribed at the right time, knw is swayed pretty easily into letting his weird-ass uncle get into the royal palace.
yjh actually knows about this - hes always the one being sent to go after kdj - but kdj somehow always escapes the cells and manages to reclaim whatever loot he'd been trying to steal when yjh sometimes catches him.
the kids (gilyoung, yoosung, biyoo) are all kdj's little apprentice minions that hsy begrudgingly helps train and look after as well. yoosung actually wants to be a knight (of some sort, more about just protecting people) and kdj indulges her on it by introducing her to jihye through namwoon.
gilyoung and biyoo very much want to follow in kdj's footsteps, on the other hand and have a fun little dynamic where biyoo for a while echoes a lot of what gilyoung does and in an older brother kind of way gilyoung is SO angry at this.
jang hayoung is also in the web of kim dokja's weird-ass long distance relatives, but is a NOBLE?! very funny, hayoung finds out she has a weird uncle and cousin in the city and forces them both to visit sangah with her at some point, and its very awkward when the infamous conman of your kingdom and the kid he bribes to let him into your palace - who is also a KNIGHT of your palace, are talking over tea.
through a series of events that involve saving sangah from some ransomer (yjh is indisposed), kdj gets a badge of HONOUR and also a queen's pardon for most of his crimes before he disappears back into the shadows. he and sangah are now besties but hsy WILL NOT let him ever live it down that he ever went that 'good.' kdj goes on a crime spree at his nearest convenience to bump back up his tally of crimes and wanted-ness.

ORV Quotes Tournament Round 3
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Plain text:
Ch 216: Real Revolutionary, II: "Still, you should leave a mark." "Does that make sense?" "There is no apparent meaning." "Then?" "It is just important that you left it." "The other party won't know so why?" "At least the wall has changed." I was speechless for a moment. Jang Hayoung spoke in a resolute voice. "Then one day, someone might read it.”

Ch 488: Omniscient Author's Viewpoint, II: It wasn't just the person reaching out, but the one grasping that hand also required courage to do so. Courage to hold that scarred hand, courage not to give up. Even if she knew this wouldn't heal her, even if she knew that holding that hand would only inflict her with a greater wound – courage to hold that hand in order to live for one more time. ⸢Some salvations aren't completed by the one giving them out, but by those receiving them.⸥

any thoughts on who lhh is referring to when he's asked "who's the heroine of orv"
I'd lie if i say i haven't given much thought to this so it's nice that now i have an excuse to talk about my picks
side story spoilers below
so lhh says the name of the female character he thinks is the most eligible to be "the main heroine of orv" but in this case main heroine is not referring to the main female character (which is undoubtedly hsy) but the love interest (although lhh does say that he didn't write orv with romance in mind)
he presents a set of criteria to justify his choice. those being
she didn't have much screen time
she is someone lhh created solely for kim dokja
(he also says smth else in the following chapter. more on that later)
based on these criteria alone i have three picks in total (i did exclude jung heewon, lee seolhwa and uriel from this altogether. lee jihye and shin yooseung as well for obvious reasons. also the 1st criteria kinda immediately rules out both hsy and ysa which was a surprise to me to say the least)
1863rd hsy. she fits the 1st criteria as well as the 2nd because we need to understand that in lhh's eyes, 1863rd hsy is also a character he wrote about
jang hayoung.
punisher
when you look at these three it's kinda obvious that the scale is tilted towards 1863rd hsy the most right. it makes sense except that in the following chapter when lhh and the other readers are transmigrated into the world of 41st turn twsa he thinks the following:
"Who did this to me? Was it hsy because i pretended to write orv all this time?
Was it yjh because of all the ways i described his pain?
or maybe it was kdj because i just finished telling everybody of his secret tastes?"
now i dont wanna rule out 1863rd hsy completely just yet but also i dont find a man crushing on a woman to be a secret taste. fork found in the kitchen lets move on.
jang hayoung and punisher are kinda in the same box here except that 1. kdj has a very different reaction towards punisher as opposed to jhy where he visibly gets flustered at the mere thought of her much less sight, and 2. while jhy was written into the narrative bcs kdj specifically asked tls123 for a second protagonist, yjh is the character that was created solely for him.
we just need to wait and see which one of these three is lhh's favorite character after all cuz thats what he says in a hurry lolol
anyway, end of post. hopefully it doesn't sound biased although I'm joking for most of it. if there's one thing i dont like to do while reading orv related content is make theories bcs singshong will most likely find a way to prove me wrong </3

[ID: Two sketches of Jang Hayoung from Omniscient Reader. Hayoung is a Korean person with a very feminine face, and long dark hair in a half updo style. She is wearing a sleeveless top, loose pants, and pointed shoes. In the first sketch, she is sitting down with her head ducked behind her outstretched arm. In the second sketch, she is tapping her head with an annoyed expression. She is saying “Think, Ahjussi, think.” There is more text underneath that sketch which reads “cant resist my t girl swag.” The last text is enclosed in a box. The Hangul characters read “Jang Hayoung.” End ID.]
obsessed that this is probably the character with the most physical description out of anyone in orv
(oh yeah no spoilers pls im only on ch 200)
Edit: I have received new information and edited the post like i promised i would, anyways congrats on the new pronouns :D
