AI: The Somnium Files - $7.99

one of the finest mystery games you can play imo. maybe uchikoshi’s best work. a perfect blend of mystery, character, and style. every character and conversation is compelling in its own way and every little thing builds up to the huge moments which makes them all feel totally earned. as always uchikoshi is a genius in the way he blends his signature branching timeline style with the themes and core concepts of the game. the twists and turns this game goes down are so crazy that weeks later you’ll still be realizing how all the little things you thought were just quirks were actually foreshadowing. cannot recc this enough tbh.

Zero Escape: The Nonary Games - $11.99

another uchikoshi joint, also extremely good. ive only played 999, the first game in this collection, but i can recc it just based on the strength of that alone. whereas somnium is a murder mystery, 999 is a visual novel about being trapped in a murder game interspliced with escape room segments. whatever you think you know you dont, 999 will take you down so many twists and turns you’ll be fucking dizzy when you’re done with it. big recc.

VA-11 HALL-A: Cyberpunk Bartender Action - $10.04

i could probably talk about this game for as long as the others, even though its way way less complex. va-11 hall-a doesnt have a huge sweeping story with insane twists and massive reveals, but what it does have is an extremely personal narrative about loss, healing, and just living your life the best way you can in a horrible dystopian world. the cast of characters feel utterly real and you learn about the world they inhabit through interactions with them, rather than being infodumped by exposition. everyone has their own story and everyone is just trying to get by, including you. one of the best small scale personal narrative games ive ever played.

Night In The Woods - $9.99

another vn i would consider “small scale” but equally as impactful. nitw is a story about a disillusioned and struggling college drop out returning to her economically declining home town. nobody is secure, nobody is happy, everyone is suffering through their daily lives. you follow mae as she struggled to readjust to her childhood home and the people she left behind. until something happens that changes her priorities radically. all ill say. despite how i just made it sound, nitw is not all depressing. theres lighthearted moments and wacky days to cut through the bleak fog, as well as genuinely heartfelt moments that feel very earned. nitw is a game i think that everyone struggling through their 20s should play.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy - $14.99

a trilogy of some of the most iconic visual novels ever made. if you havent played ace attorney what the hell are you doing? these games blend outlandish humor and engaging characters with genuinely impactful writing and thoughtful social commentary. these are truly genuinely classics and i cannot express the kind of treat youre in for if youve never experienced these games.

The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles - $24.79

imagine the ace attorney trilogy but with the serious themes and social commentary turned up a few notches. great ace attorney is what you’d get. like the trilogy this is multiple games bundled into one (two of them) and is a great value. a must play for fans of the originals, and frankly a perfect jumping point for new fans as well, if you so choose to. you cant go wrong with either the trilogy or tgaa.

Halo: The Master Chief Collection - $15.99

yes obviously im going to shill for mcc. this is SIX whole games. fully functioning multiplayer, custom lobbies, co-op, everything you remember from these games on xbox but better. this is literally $360 worth of games for $16. if youve ever been curious about this iconic franchise or want to relive the xbox live days, mcc is damn near perfect.

Portal 1 & 2 - $2.98

honestly its 2022 and you dont own portal? cmon. two of the best narrative puzzle games ever made. a strong argument for games as art. incredibly clever game design and timeless writing. the portal games are something everyone should experience. i paid like $80 for these games back in the day, the fact that you can get some of the greatest games ever made for $3 is astounding. yes this is technically a shooter.

DUSK - $8.99

an extremely fine shooter. excellent level design, outstanding sound design, amazing art direction. dusk isnt just a retro throwback, it pushes the style and mechanic of those classics forward to heights that were impossible back then. imo dusk is a modern classic when it comes it a tight, well designed shooter.

ULTRAKILL - $14.99

an extremely fine shooter. excellent level design, outstanding sound design, amazing art direction. didnt i just say that. its still true. ultrakill is a game that will test your reflexes, text your ability to adapt on the fly, and demand you do everything as stylishly cool as fuckin possible. when they call this game “devil may quake” theyre not joking. the skill ceiling is insanely high but the skill floor can be as low as you want it thanks to very granular difficulty and accessibility options. the game will push you to want to learn the tech and master everything, but it never stops you from just wanting to have fun above all else. theres also a demo! 

DEATHLOOP - $23.99

another excellent experience from the fine folks at arkane studios. deathloop combines combat that is fast and snappy thanks to unique powers and cool guns, with a story you slowly unravel piece by piece. the way the story unfolds and the immense amount of interaction you have with that almost makes you feel like youre playing a detective game. the game does an excellent job of making you feel like you are constantly making progress through exploration and discoveries that get you one step closer to your ultimate goal, or even just small things like discovering a new safer route to a target or getting a new powerful gun thanks to a side quest or secret area you stumbled upon.

HORROR

Dead Space - $4.99

re4....in space!!!! dead space is a horror classic imo. while obviously inspired by re4, it takes the design and aesthetic in its own direction, and is a more modern controlling experience compared to re4. the atmosphere and feel of dead space is intensely good, and even when you get used to the scares the game is still a tight and well executed third person shooter that demands smart use of ammo and careful avoidance of damage.

Resident Evil 2 (Remake) - $14.99

one of THE finest horror games ive ever played. the action is always tense, the strategy is interesting and difficult, and the atmosphere is top notch. what i said about dead space becoming a tight third person shooter after the scares wear off goes double here. re2 is a very very tactical experience that asks you to carefully consider your inventory and route every time you step out of a safe room, and the stress of that management can be scarier than any zombie. i cannot overstate how well tuned the game experience is. 

System Shock 2 - $2.49

yes ss2 is horror. one of the finest classic pc games you can play. frankly unmatched even by some modern outings. if youre an avid gamer you’ve surely played many a game that were inspired by the legendary tone and style of this game. i recc this game to anyone who wants to experience some truly iconic sci fi horror, but i will this game can be pretty brutal if you build a character wrong. if you dont have the patience for old school hardcore trial and error, dont be afraid to check a guide or two, but i promise the game is worth it.

ACTION

Bayonetta - $4.99

one of THE defining character action games. bayonetta is a modern masterpiece that should always be recc’d whenever possible. stylish action and impeccable mechanics, just dont ask me to explain the plot.

Metal Gear Rising: Revengence - $7.49

while mgr might be slightly more experimental and obtuse than your average modern character action, and to some it may be the meme game, it has earned its place as one of the greats imo. if you let yourself indulge in the game the plot is genuinely impactful and the combat is extremely rewarding once you put the work in to grasp the systems at play.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge - $22.49

a simply fantastic game. a complete no brainer if you love brawlers or tmnt. the art direction is beautiful and so so detailed for a sprite game, combat is simple to grasp and easy to execute, and the soundtrack elevates the game extremely. this game pivots away from the cheap quarter munching design of the games it takes its direct inspiration from, and instead supplements that with the ability to let you truly display skill and mastery of the game through combos, supers, and intelligent positioning. also it has 6 PLAYER CO-OP

light novel reread, vol. 1 ch. 9

this is a HUGE chapter, not necessarily length wise, but in plot and relevance and personal interest. i have a lot to say about it.

this is the first instance in the series of narita playing with nonlinear storytelling. i have my gripes about narita, but his writing is incredible. the way he weaves narratives together to form one cohesive story is absolutely masterful. the complexity he works with amazes me. i love the amount of absurdity and fun he allows into his prose and his plots while still not being afraid to go dark with his subject matter, without ever going so dark that it ever feels too voyeuristic (altho that could be the target audience of teen/young adults) (ya disease even). narita is a huge influence to my own writing style.

neither namie or seiji are done any justice in the anime. i love the anime dearly, but on my second more in depth read of the novels (so far) i cant help but notice how much was lost in the animation. something i think frequently, and will likely bring up again later in the series, is that i think the anime deserves a reboot. my proposed drrr reboot would be four seasons (24 or so eps each) following the 3 light novels to a season format of the 2010 release. (for anyone who hasnt read the novels, season one covers the events of volumes one to three while x2 follows volumes four to thirteen; it does break the season into three with the shou/ten/ketsu format, but theres just way too much to cover well in 36 episodes.) i absolutely love the pacing and charm of the 2010 release, to be honest.

i love this passage about shooter and celty. its something else that doesnt quite translate to the anime. in one of the later authors notes of the series, when the 2010 release was announced, narita mentioned that either he or a fan expressed concern over the novels translating well to an animated format. while i do love the anime and think it's a decent (and even at times incredible) adaption of the source, i think drrr truly shines in its original format.

the only thing really stopping celty from wanting to be with shinra right now is her insecurities. something i love about their relationship is that celty knows shinras full of shit, and she doesnt tolerate it, while at the same time never genuinely seeming particularly bothered by it. the times we see her most agitated with him, its because he's either pushing a subject he knows he shouldnt or because she's overwhelmed or flustered by his abysmal flirting. she knows hes a lying morally bankrupt little asshole and shes like. but wait. i dont have a head how could you even like me

celty, while being plagued by the deeply human emotions of anxiety and self doubt, still isn't sure whether she truly feels emotions. she's so horribly self unaware. i love her.

celty has such a pleasing character arc coming to accept herself and her emotions. theres a scene in sh where celty has a very celty-esque little anxiety meltdown and startles a few characters, but mizuchi, the protagonist, is described as "long since having to come to terms with how truly human celty was".

i guess i had a lot to say about this chapter because i have a lot to say about shinra and celty (and shizuo) at any given moment. so far, this has been my favorite chapter of volume one.

He had a death count of 25 and the count of 70+ injured. His bombs successfully went off and he even killed himself the exact same way Eric did. I feel bad that he had a severely abusive childhood, his father was an abusive alcoholic and abused him, his mother and even harmed their neighbors in their neighborhood. Everyone was terrified of his father. And his mother is a doctor/nurse or whatever and was treating his victims, when she found out her son was behind the shooting she tried killing herself. And he has an amazing music taste haha :3 and thanks I am. I will. Heh :3.

hey splatoon fans, while you're waiting for side order i highly recommend playing TRON 2.0

it's a FPS sequel to TRON that came out in 2003. it's about the now-adult son of two of the main human characters from the original TRON movie getting sucked into a virus-infected computer, and in the process of trying to disinfect the computer, he uncovers a plot from the company taking over his parents' company to use their laser technology to digitize armies of humans and take over the world.

do i have you hooked yet?

if i don't, consider this: i'm recommending it in huge part because it's largely a story about jet, the protagonist, learning to reconnect with his dad after they both lost his mom, who died in a workplace laser accident and was most likely partially digitized. the digitization laser was her own life's work. the digitization AI, MA3A, takes on lora's voice after her death (and is voiced by lora's actress from the original film), and there are workplace rumors that it's because alan incorporated the digitized portions of her remains into MA3A's code. jet spends a lot of the game defending his mom's digital/digitized ghost from external threats.

what i'm getting at is that if you're excited for side order because of how it's hinted at dealing with themes of grief in a y2k digital landscape... they're mostly subtext in TRON 2.0 but i still think the game is seriously up your alley.

if you're a splatoon fan who hasn't played many other shooter games before, TRON 2.0 is a great introduction to the PC shooter world imo. if you're squeamish about blood/gore/giblets flying everywhere, there's none of that in TRON 2.0. if you're a splatoon fan because you like shooters but you've never given TRON 2.0 a chance, this is your sign!

some pros of TRON 2.0:

it looks fucking awesome

TRON 2.0 has a very turn-of-the-century take on the aesthetics of the original TRON. it predates tron legacy by seven years and it doesn't have any of that apple-store aesthetic. it's got all the juicy colors of the original film, with lots of crisp details that the original animation hardware couldn't handle. the digital world of TRON 2.0 only gets better every year with age. meanwhile it's got a (for its time) state-of-the-art glow mechanic that gives the game a very comforting soft feel.

and these are just the ones i've got on my own PC! (the last one i dont know if it's my, screenshot but the rest are from my own screenshots folder).

no, fr, this required some pretty good hardware when it came out... but the game turned 20 this year. i managed to run TRON on my old laptop after it very nearly split in half like a 2ds and took half an hour to boot by using my parents' TV as a monitor. it didn't even drop that many frames! this was in 2020. it didnt even have a graphics card.

yeah i was a grown adult when that photo was taken. no i dont care that i look 13. my car had just burst an engine rod in the middle of the desert about 48 hours before this was taken, so my fit wasn't really at the top of my priorities. (don't ask.)

you can get it DRM-free

don't get the steam version y'all, i can vouch for it being super glitchy. i can basically only run it while using mods to launch it without contacting steam. get it from gog.com.

ethics note: pirate the TRON movies as much as you want but im pretty sure the original company still gets some bucks when you buy 2.0 legally, and disney fucked them over pretty bad when it comes to the rights to TRON 2.0's characters and story, and they ripped off half the plot of the game to make the movie (and the movie is worse). if you don't wanna drop $10 wait for a gog sale and drop $3. (and honestly, if you're paying $20/year to get disconnected every 15 matches in splatoon, even paying $10 for a good retro game isn't the worst financial decision you've ever made.)

i wear old spice and nautica. if i’’m being honest i get it from my dad, thats what he used to wear when i was little and it reminds me of working on our old boat with him. 

on the opposite sex, i definitely prefer natural scents, like vanilla and stuff, over manufactured perfumes, but the particular scents i like tend to be more subject to who they remind me of and what the person i’m with wears. 

85- Favorite place to shop at?

i don’t do a ton of shopping, but there’s a sporting goods shop in my hometown called Bill Jackson’s that had an annual diving gear sale, and a really reliable diving center. there’s a place i go to shot when im on the gulf coast called Shooter’s World, and while it kind of caters to the tacticool kind of shooter, it also has a decent selection of sporting guns and handguns, plus the people there put any political rhetoric out the window, i’ve never heard any weird 2nd-amendment-rights bullshit while i’m there. the range officers are really reliable too, its a place i feel safe and comfortable shooting at. 

88- Are you more like your mom or your dad?

probably my dad, but i take after both of them. my temper comes from my dad. he’s the kind of person that has a short temper and no time for bullshit, but has spent his life learning to handle that. i’ve never seen him raise a hand against someone, ive never seen him become unjustifiably angry or violent. im hot-blooded as he is and i’m working to be as level-headed as he is. i get my politics from him. he’s pragmatic and reasonable, but not emotionally disconnected. 

i get my smartassery from my mom, and my moral compass is a weird amalgam of my mom’s family’s compassion and my dad’s reasoning. they’re both good people, even if they watch weird anime. my mom also spends a lot of time outside working on her plants, and ive done a good bit of yard work with her, but they both raised me to be an outside kid.

96- Where would you like to live?

anywhere with ocean. i like the Caribbean, it’s familiar waters are something i understand, but the planet is heating up and it’s getting less and less pleasant to live in Florida. as long as there’s a coastline, where i can sail and dive, somewhere with living, breathing ocean, i’ll settle down.

it’s never the same. i usually look for intelligence and compassion. also, self-sufficiency and independence. strong women good.

189- What’s something you can see yourself going to jail for?

hospitalizing someone. i’m generally careful about things that would put me in jail, because that poses a risk to my security clearance in the future, which i need to work in most of the aerospace industry. but i’m six feet tall and i wear big black combat boots and if anyone lays a finger on someone i care about i’ll kick their teeth out. there was this guy bothering a girl i’m friends with and my brother and i were preparing to show up to his dorm as a brute squad and tell him to step down. she talked to him first and he handled it better than we expected. i still wanted to throw him into the mosh pit at the Authority Zero show,  but axel talked me out of that.

gun. i’m good at guns, they’re pretty effective. i think, uh, something like “when you get to hell tell them who sent you” but i’m not usually one for drama like that.

I really like Kale Tucker from Titan A.E., he’s a bum on a ship in space, i grew up as a bum on a sailboat. we both like heavy metal and space babes. he’s also voiced by Matt Damon, which is why matt damon seems so natural in sci-fi movies to me. 

224- Something that you’re proud of:

i work really well under pressure. i tend to be an anxious mess until something actually goes wrong and i need to react and then i switch modes. i think its from diving, where all you have is the stuff you brought down with you (including air) and you have to keep completely cool if something goes wrong. i have lots of first aid and emergency response training/experience as an eagle scout, and being ready to respond if something bad happens is a skill im happy to have.

these details / rant is going under a read more because as someone who’s worked in the media / entertainment industry and has worked on planning full festivals - this is incredibly frustrating to me to see how poorly executed this was:   content warning:  potential swearing, idk whatever. just be prepared for a rant. 

tana literally curses vidcon. talks so much shit about it. she is partly responsible for this. for seeing that it was set for the same days that vidcon was to happen. to try and one up vidcon. this was a spiteful move on her end, 100%. we can’t even act like it’s not. 

to even advertise and promote this event for FREE - yet to charge people money. obviously this is a fucking idiotic thing. you can’t do that, logically. especially when you have expenses that occur - venue rental, security, adequate food and water - WHICH THERE WAS NONE. all of this should have been properly executed and set up before the vent was able happening. 

also no. no there was no 20,000 people.  im not even going to touch that. 

shane and every other ‘speaker’ advertised to be speaking at this shit show have EVERY right to be upset and bothered by this. they weren’t involved in the planning of this event but had to watch their fans get ripped off, get burned by the sun, heat exhaustion, etc etc. they have every right to be upset. to not be able to help these people in any way - it really puts them in a tough position. it’s taking advantage of these presenters and content creators as well - using their face and name as a means of promotion and not being able to deliver on that promise. 

there should have been adequate medical supports on site - dehydration and the fact that these people have been BURNED! heat exhaustion and heat stroke are incredibly real and deadly. this entire thing is a lawsuit waiting to fucking happen. 

i’d like to briefly touch on the ‘is there a shooter’ comment that i heard in one of these videos. shane even touches on how i feel exactly - michael and tana are so very fucking lucky that were WAS no shooting. with the increase in gun violence, the probability for that to occur was very high and without security and police assistance - there is nothing safe about the execution of this event. 

tana, thank you for being able to at least admit that you were a fucking idiot. i hope that it was a sincere admittance of fault. your planning of this event was completely out of spite for your distaste in vidcon and being banned. you did not properly do your research into who you were going to work with. EVEN SHANE TELLS YOU THAT! this was planned entirely as a revenge act with no thought for the fans coming to this event or the other content creators for this event. 

michael. lets address Good Times or whatever the fuck his company is called. 1) i had the hardest fucking time actually finding his damn website online. it was on the second page of google for me. i found a good times company in new zealand which mislead me for a moment into thinking that tana blindly trusted a company in new zealand to organize her event. 2) once i actually found this damn website. it is so poorly created with images that don’t contain watermarks and could have easily been snatched from other creators / brands.  even the brands listed on the bottom on his damn website: disney, coca cola, nike, universal, etc. these are huge fucking companies - global. uh some that have been around longer than michael has even been alive AND companies that handle their own branding or hire their own team / are very elite in their hiring process. michael provides no actual proof on his website that he’s worked with these companies. also not to mention the COUNTLESS videos that i’ve managed to find of clients of michael getting scammed and ripped off by him. 

michael is attempting to sue the marriott because he claims that they lied about capacity. no. im sorry.  when planning any event / convention / festival that requires use of a venue - there is - by law - a paper that dictates the maximum capacity of a certain space - PROVIDED AND SIGNED BY THE FIRE MARSHALL. there are also floor plans and maps outlining secure fire exits, etc. all of this information would have been readily available to him in the planning stages. he is either grasping at straws or is purely lazy and irresponsible - my guess is both.

okay so we know there were no free tickets and tana claims that she had no knowledge of this yet there was a snap video of her making some joke about being a scammer and then trying to brush it off as just being drunk? no she makes a point about michael saying that he’s a liar and wanting to say anything to cover his own ass but she is just as capable of doing the same thing. i believe both of them are in the wrong for various reasons - obviously michael for a much bigger and more crucial reason. especially his gross need for publicity. 

i don’t even have the mental capacity to understand. how the fuck do you fuck up this badly unless the entire thing was set to be doomed from the start. this is not how you execute something. there are LEGAL steps that are needed. proper contracts and permits with your venues, ensuring that you deal with the fire marshals to keep capacity and safety measures in check. NOT OVERSELLING YOUR FUCKING VENUE!!!!!! hiring adequate security and medical teams. branding, sponsorship. i’m 22 years old, i’ve been working in this industry since i was 15 years old on my own, learning from industry elders in my area and even learning more gaining a college education to hone my skills and learn more. i’ve managed artists and musicians, i’ve helped organize and run festivals and even smaller scale shows. it’s not impossible. the heart was not into this event, it was created clearly out of spite with people who had ill intentions with no understanding of what they were doing.

too much lying and bullshit. this just made me so annoyed and angry to see things executed so poorly and to see people get HURT here when all they wanted was a good weekend with their idols.

what is touhou

its a series of bullet hell shooters all made by one guy called ZUN. its famous for its huge (150+ characters by now) cast of cute girls in frilly dresses, its unusually deep lore for bullet hell games, the difficulty of the games, and the music. there’s 16 mainline games, a few fighters, some music cd’s, and a lot of print works and probably more things I’m forgetting right now bc im not actually all that deep into the lore. normally that’d be considered impressive and/or daunting but you’re into fate so you’re used to that kind of thing by now. touhou has become such a big deal in japan that it has its own conventions.

the series is set in a place called gensokyo, which is a land sealed off from the human world that youkai fled to after humans began to stop believing in them. because there’s so many powerful creatures made to live together in a relatively small space they introduced the bullet hell system to solve conflicts without bloodshed which is the lore excuse for why everyone’s always shooting fancy patterns at each other. the main characters are reimu hakurei, a cynical shrine maiden that protects the border between gensokyo and the human world, and marisa kirisame, a cheerful kleptomaniac magician. a lot of other characters are playable across games too. since the cast is so large its basically impossible to not find at least one girl who’s your type. 

the games started when ZUN didn’t like any of the games on the market at the time and decided he should just make the kind of games he wants to play himself. the first 5 games in the series are for an operating system called pc-98 and form a separate canon from the rest, which are for windows. each game started out standalone but after th10 they started having a continuous narrative between games and eventually things went from “a vampire blocks out the sun with red mist because she wants to go out during the day” in th6 to “a super advanced civilisation from the moon is planning to invade gensokyo and commit genocide to clear the place for their own settlement because they’re fleeing from an invasion from hell that is being held by a woman who seeped in her own grief and resentment after a lunarian goddess killed her son for so long that it made her a divine spirit who won’t rest until every single lunarian is dead” in th15. despite this, the plot of each game can usually be simplified to “someone starts shit, reimu beats them the fuck up, they become friends, the end”. i have no idea what happens in the print works tbh but I hear they’re good shit

the series is really famous for its music! ZUN is an incredibly good composer and his games are generally made to support the music rather than the other way around. it’s spawned a massive doujin music scene with fans creating countless remixes of every single theme in every possible style. some of the more famous doujin circles even hold concerts sometimes.

the games are pretty hard but they’re also easy to jump into in terms of mechanics bc its basically just ‘if you can dodge a wrench you can dodge a bullet’ and they’re pretty quick to play through so if you’re interested you should definitely take them for a spin sometime. I downloaded my copies from here  under the tab ‘touhou [official games]’. i suggest starting with either mountain of faith (generally considered the easiest) or imperishable night (a little more lenient when you fuck up) but just do whatever really they’re all hard as fuck lol. you can also browse the wiki a bit first.
