Your Purpose

I recalled having this conversation with Shaza recently. I asked her, “Do you think that us humans have a purpose?”

The question came from a very jaded place, I genuinely was a nihilist. I do not think we were brought to this Earth to do anything significant and serve a purpose, we just simply exist and nothing matters. 

Shaza answered without hesitation, “Yes, I believe we all have a purpose and there is a reason why we are here.”

I almost scoffed at her answer, even though I pride myself at being open to different point of views, yet there I was scoffing over someone else’s optimism and faith.

However, a few weeks down the line, here I am, realizing my purpose.

That is how evolved and ever-changing us humans are, I used to believe in a purpose, but along the way I lost it, and when I talked to those who are still believers of this notion it will often trigger the defensive side of me. Why do you guys think that we serve any purpose? We are so insignificant.

But what made me lost my faith was my trauma, and to punish others for their views were unfair. They weren’t broken down by their trauma, some may never experience it. Why was I so bitter over it? Was I simply envious?

I’ve felt really lost, to be honest. It was triggered by me leaving my comfortable career and switching path. Why was I unhappy? Why did I feel unfulfilled? I am earning more than I have ever earned, I was able to afford everything I wanted.

Yet, I felt so unfulfilled.

Then I changed job, and yet again, it was great on the surface. I’ve never had such a flexible and chill environment doing what I do best and know best, earning more than I earned from my previous two jobs but guess what, I was still unfulfilled.

I had so many conversations with my close friends on why was that the case for me? I am ultimately very content with where I am but my soul beg to differ.

They kept asking me the same question, “If you don’t like to do this, then what do you like to do instead?”

It was a question that I should be able to answer very quickly right? I was supposed to know what I want because I am my best friend and I know me the best.

My answer was slightly sugar coated, because at the back of my head survival was still number one and I can’t possibly just do whatever my heart desires and not think about money?

Yuekeat mentioned art, echoed by my other friend, Sky. 

Yes, art. Art brings me joy.

Not just paintings and exhibitions and sculptures, for me art is the way we talk, the way we articulate, the way we write, the way we romanticize, even the way we love and hate, that is art.

But my brain somehow still went through a very linear path of thinking, how can I monetize Art? 

Why do I have to do that? Why can’t I just make Art, live and breathe Art without finding a way to monetize it? It’s about fuelling my soul, making me happy and content. Exactly what I am doing now, by writing and penning my thoughts down.

I never plan what to write, I would just write and it will just flow because it’s the best medium I know for me to create Art. Even as I was typing this, it was as if I was talking to myself, digesting my thoughts. Unplanned words.

I know what I want, I’ve always known, my soul has been trying to remind me again and again but being too caught up in the physical realm made me forget. You love writing, Cicio. You genuinely do, you love expressing you love talking to people from different walks of life, you become the voice to those who are voiceless, you have no fear in expressing your point of view even if it’s half-baked. You are not scared to be wrong, you are not scared to grow from mistakes, that’s how you are as a person.

Ching and I had a short conversation, she told me what’s been going on in her life and she’s changing her career now.

When she asked me how I was and I mentioned my unfulfilled and mundane career life, she asked the age old question of “Then what do you think your calling is, writing?”

Even my friends are very hyper aware of how I am as a person and what my actual passion is, because I emulate it but when the outside world knows, I myself tend to forget.

With that simple prompt, it actually made me realize what my purpose is.

As cliche as this may sound, but my purpose is to help and influence others (my people) to be their most authentic self.

I told her, “Sharing stories, meaningful conversations, exchanging ideas. It makes me feel so nice when people tell me that because of our conversations or my sharing they actually start to look at things differently and it helped them.” 

It doesn’t sound at all like art now does it? It doesn’t sound doable as a money making machine? How do I even earn with that and sustain my life?

We also agreed to doing a boring 9-5 and do what we love on the side.

But then the more i thought about it, the more I am leaning towards “no”, my life should be filled with doing what I love and my 9-5 should be “on the side” or else my soul will die.

We still need to be realistic here, we live in a capitalistic world, we still need to survive. 

Thanks to the conversations I had with my friends, and thanks to the podcast I’ve been listening to lately, “Make Art Not Content” by Father Bronques, I will strive for it. Just because my writings are not monetize and commercialized doesn’t mean I can’t let it water my soul, doesn’t mean it cannot help others.

It made me rediscover myself, and my purpose. I found my purpose.

There is no rule to this, you can know, and you can even be oblivious, but knowing definitely drives me. It drives me to wake up everyday.

Oh SHIT! THAT LOVE

Important things to remember when you are married or in a serious relationship:

Don’t ever assume your partner feels loved.

Date nights are a must.

Doesn’t matter if you go out, or stay in.

Talking openly about what you want to change in your relationship is important.

Learn each others love language.

We all don’t perceive love the same way.

Go to bed mad sometimes.

Don’t force a resolution.

Sleeping on it does help.

When you get into a fight, don’t just say “I’m sorry”. Say what you are sorry for, and how you will react differently next time.

It will get boring sometimes.

Every couple goes through the “boring” stage.

It’s normal.

It will fade.

This is the time in your relationship you will have to put the most effort in.

Some days you will have to pull more weight than your partner, and vice versa.

It’s important to check in on each other’s mental health.

It’s okay to go to couples counselling.

It helps.

It doesn’t mean you two are ending, or failing.

Talk about money.

Talk about your financial goals.

Let your partner know what you expect from them, and vice versa.

Turn off the phones an hour before bedtime and just talk to each other.

Ask questions like

“What do you need to see more of from me?”

“How can we understand each other better?”

And most importantly, be kind to each other.

Love each other.

Fight for each other.

Remember, love is never easy, and it’s one hell of a ride.

But damn, is it ever beautiful, and worth it.

This beauty of a buff woman is my first DnD OC Shaza! She is a barbarian who grew up with dragonborns and humans. She is with one of the few characters that has NO incredibly tragic backstory. I love her with all my heart. Unfortunately she falls in love again and again with people who unfortunately do not return her feelings. To be fair: her first love was an airship captain who was incredibly gay for his first mate and didn't notice anything. Her second love was a blacksmith who unfortunately turned out to be a pretty big idiot. The only man who has not disappointed her so far is her best friend Bryn. A forest elf who one day will become the greatest hero of all time. I think since she's not completely straight. If Shaza ever finds a woman as combative as she is, I'm sure she'll fall in love. 15 Iconic 90s Soap Storylines That Had Us All Glued To Our Screens

While soap audiences are relatively modest nowadays, back in the 90s millions of us tuned in to catch up with the carryings-on of our favourite characters. 

Whether it was Deirdre Rachid’s wrongful imprisonment in Coronation Street,  Brookside’s body under the patio, Sharongate in EastEnders or a full-scale plane crash destroying Emmerdale, the decade had more than its fair share of soap scandal. 

As we continue our celebration of old-school TV in HuffPost UK’s nostalgia series Rewind To The 90s, we’re looking back at 15 iconic soap storylines that had everyone talking at the time...

Free The Weatherfield One, 1998 – Coronation Street

Coronation Street created one of those rare soap moments that became a national talking point when Deirdre Rachid was wrongly imprisoned.

The beloved character was conned by lover Jon Lindsay and ended up in jail after he implicated her in a number of his scams and fitted her up as the brains of the operation. 

A now-iconic ‘Free The Weatherfield One’ campaign swept the country, campaigning for Diedre’s release, which eventually came when one of Jon’s exes came forward with a similar story. 

While there was a real strength of feeling among fans for Deidre to be freed, producers had always planned for the character to eventually make it out. 

Sharongate, 1994 – EastEnders

In one of the most memorable EastEnders moments ever, Sharon and Phil Mitchell’s affair was exposed when Sharon’s husband and Phil’s brother Grant played a tape recording of Shaza discussing their rendezvous with best mate Michelle Fowler to a packed Queen Vic. 

Awkward doesn’t even begin to cover it.  

The Millennium Club explosion, 1999 – Brookside

Brookside loved a good disaster plot in the late 90s and early 00s, but perhaps the most devastating was the explosion at the Millenium Club. 

Many of Brookside Close’s residents found themselves caught up in the drama when the newly-opened fitness club-come-nightspot was blown up by gangster Callum Finnegan, who had been terrorising co-owner Lindsay Corkill. 

Greg Shadwick perished in the disaster, having been too busy having sex in the shower with Susannah Farnham to hear the alarm, while his son Jason also died while trying to save him. 

The plane crash, 1993 – Emmerdale

The plane crash is often seen as a pivotal moment in Emmerdale history, as it helped transform the show from a cosy, rural drama serial into one of the ‘Big Three’ soaps. 

Some 18 million people tuned in to watch these dramatic scenes, which saw a huge plane crash kill four people in the village of Beckindale, which was then renamed Emmerdale in the wake of the disaster. 

Karl and Sarah’s affair, 1997 – Neighbours

Karl and Susan Kennedy had been one of the most dependable couples on Neighbours following their arrival on Ramsay Street in 1994, but all that changed when Dr Karl embarked upon an affair with his secretary Sarah Beaumont. 

The pair were getting up to all sorts behind Susan’s back, but when the truth did eventually out, it culminated in this iconic soap slap, which we can still feel two decades on.  

Kevin and Natalie’s affair, 1997 – Coronation Street

Much like their counterparts Down Under, Corrie’s Kevin and Sally Webster’s marriage appeared to be unbreakable prior to Natalie Horrocks’ arrival on t’cobbles. 

But Kevin soon fell for the charms of the new Rovers landlady, and while it had initially started as a no-strings arrangement, Natalie later convinced Kevin to leave Sally for him, resulting in one of soap’s most infamous scraps. 

The first pre-watershed female same-sex kiss, 1994 – Brookside 

Five years after EastEnders aired soapland’s first same-sex kiss between Barry Clark and Colin Russell, Brookside aired a landmark moment for LGBTQ+ representation. 

The moment saw Beth Jordache and Margaret Clemence lock lips on the Channel 4 soap, in what marked the first time a female same-sex kiss had aired before the watershed on British TV. 

Kim’s exit, 1999 – Emmerdale

To say Kim Tate’s original stint in Emmerdale was eventful would be somewhat of an understatement, so when her reign as the village’s resident villain came to an end in 1999, bosses had to come up with a fitting ending. 

Having let husband Steve take the fall for both of their roles in a botched heist, she stole back the money from her former stepson Chris Tate and left him for dead – although not before telling him about her role in his father’s death some years prior.

A smirking Kim then strode out of Home Farm and took off for a new life in a waiting helicopter with son Jamie. 

Curly and Raquel’s relationship, 1995-96 – Coronation Street

Soap bosses created one of Corrie’s most iconic couples ever when they had the stroke of genius to pair up two of the show’s comedic characters, Rovers barmaid Raquel Wolstenhulme and supermarket manager Curly Watts. 

While their relationship certainly served up plenty of comedic moments over the years, it wasn’t without its tests, especially when Raquel broke off their engagement to be with Des Barnes. 

Ultimately, it didn’t prove to be true love for the couple, with Raquel leaving Curly to accept an aromatherapy job in Kuala Lumpur in 1996 when Sarah Lancashire quit the show. 

Saskia’s murder, 1999 – EastEnders

After Steve Owen’s ex-girlfriend Saskia Duncan tried to strangle him in the office of the e20 club, he accidentally killed her by hitting her over the head with an ashtray. 

After Matthew Rose helped the club owner cover up her death, Steve later fit him up to take the fall and he was later convicted of manslaughter. 

The plot spilled over into the new millennium after Matthew was released from prison and plotted revenge on Steve. 

Hayley’s arrival, 1998 – Coronation Street 

In another huge soap first, Coronation Street introduced British soap’s first-ever trans character when Hayley Cropper arrived in Weatherfield in 1998. 

While actor Julie Hemondhalgh has admitted since she left the soap in 2014 that she would not accept a trans role as a cisgender woman now, Hayley’s introduction was still regarded as a huge step forward for trans visibility on screen at the time, and the beloved factory worker helped pave the way for other trans soap characters, including Hollyoaks’ Sally St. Claire and EastEnders’ Kyle Slater – both trans roles that were given to trans actors. 

Tiffany dies, 1998 – EastEnders

This New Year’s Eve death scene stunned fans as Frank Butcher mowed down Tiffany Mitchell in one of his dodgy motors, just as she was finally ready to escape her abusive relationship with husband Grant.

While we grieved Tiff, Martine McCutcheon went on to much bigger things, starring in the festive classic Love Actually alongside Hugh Grant in 2003. 

The body under the patio, 1993 – Brookside 

Perhaps Brookside’s most memorable storyline aired in 1993, when the abusive Trevor Jordache was murdered by his tormented wife Mandy. 

Mandy and her daughter Beth, who Trevor had also abused, later ended up burying his body under the patio in their back garden, where it stayed undiscovered for two years. 

It was only when a leak meant the area needed to be dug up that Trevor’s body was discovered by Eddie Banks.

Mark’s HIV diagnosis, 1991 – EastEnders

In a landmark soap storyline aimed to tackle the stigma around HIV and AIDs, Mark Fowler was diagnosed with the HIV virus. 

Viewers saw Mark coming to terms with the diagnosis and telling his loved ones, as well as depicting the ignorance and discrimination he faced from some Albert Square residents, including Queen Vic landlady Peggy Mitchell.

Bet’s exit, 1995 – Coronation Street

It was truly the end of a soap era when the iconic Bet Lynch left t’cobbles, seemingly for good, back in 1995. 

The leopard print-loving, chain-smoking landlady of the Rovers Return handed over the keys to the pub after finding out the brewery was selling up.

Her exit came before a falling out with Rita Tanner, who had initially agreed to help Bet buy the pub outright, but when Rita pulled out, it ended their friendship – something they failed to patch up during Bet’s subsequent brief returns to The Street in 2002 and 2003.

The Covid-19 crisis has in many ways brought people together. There’s a growing sense of bonding, people are trying to help each other in every possible way. Celebrities are no different. Apart from extending financial support, creating awareness on social media, a few actors took the awareness programme a step ahead through their live and video sessions online with Covid-19 survivors.

While actor Kartik Aaryan spoke to one of Gujarat’s first Covid-19 survivors, Sumiti Singh, actor Varun Dhawan interacted with actor Zoa Morani, who along with her father Karim Morani, and sister Shaza, tested positive. Actor Jacqueline Fernandez chatted with Rita Bachkaniwala, Surat’s first Covid-19 patient, and actor and MP Mimi Chakraborty also did an Instagram live with Monami Biswas, a survivor from West Bengal

The idea is to help people deal with the fear of being infected by the virus and the social stigmas attached to it.

Sharing their journey, both Singh and Bachkaniwala spoke about the symptoms, treatment, and also the support they received from friends and family.

Morani, on the other hand, spoke about feeling better since she visited the hospital, and that “coming to the hospital was the best decision”, highlighting the positive side of the treatment being meted out to patients. While these videos have been watched widely, health experts say they can have a positive effect on the society.

“We’ve never experienced such kind of a pandemic, so there’s lot of panic around… If infected means the end of the road, how one can transmit the virus? Such videos of survivors do give out a message of hope and positivity. Also, attaching the symbol of celebrities who represent the larger aspiration of the society, promotes positivity in this otherwise stressful situation,” says Dr Kushal Jain, Consultant Psychiatrist and Director, Centre for Behavioural Sciences, New Delhi.

Jain shares that some of his patients spoke about these videos and what they got to know from it. “The fact that one can recover from the virus is definitely giving many confidence. There are many who are suffering in silence. Such videos help these people a lot,” he adds.

Psychologist Piyush Dixit agrees, and says, “There’s a fear of death, people are also worried about the consequences of getting infected, whether they would be treated well or not, how their immediate neighbourhood will react if are infected… But these people talking fighting and winning over the virus, the love and support they received, does give a sense of relief to many.”  

While Dixit shares that there’s a rise in people dealing with mental issues over the last two-three months, Jain feels the numbers will go up once the lockdown is lifted. He cites that his wife, a psychologist was counselling a woman who stays in US and who is facing tension as her husband had been laid off.

“There’s a fear of what’s going to happen… The economic slowdown and its effect on the society is also adding to the concern. So while these videos are helping people know how to deal with the virus, the concern around economy needs to be addressed soon,” he ends.

Producer Karim Morani, who bankrolled Chennai Express, has revealed that his daughter Shaza Morani has tested positive for Coronavirus. The producer revealed that she has been admitted to Nanavati Hospital in Mumbai.

The Morani brothers (Aly, Karim, and Mohamed) live with their families at Juhu. After the COVID-19 diagnosis, their houses have been kept under lockdown. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation officials will reach the Morani household on April 6 to check the rest of the family members to check if they are showing any symptoms.

Karim sent out text messages to people whom he knows in the vicinity. His message reads, "Dear All, Shaza, my daughter, has tested COVID-19 positive without any symptoms at all, although she has been in isolation and not mingled with any foreign travellers. Since we are all law-abiding citizens, it is my duty to inform the authorities and you all, being in the closest proximity to you. We are admitting her to isolation in Nanavati Hospital. The municipal authorization committee will come to talk to you tomorrow (6th April) morning at 10.30 a.m. for briefing all and checking if anyone has any symptoms. Please do as you feel deem fit. We are sorry to cause this inconvenience. Would request to keep it confidential please, for all of us."

Tapi sebab Anwar melawan maka tercetuslah plan liwat 1 untuk singkirkan Anwar. Cuba kes nih Dr Mazlee melawan. Agak2 apa plan Tun untuk teruskan perancangan pecat DrMazlee? Skandal amoi? Meliwat? Or what? Hanyak dek kerana Dr Mazlee tu clean and clear makanya Tun M takde kunci untuk jadikan menteri2 dibawah beliau menjadi pupet. Pupet yang ikot sahaja arahannya sebab takut Tun kantoikan. Lainlah menteri nama Assmi tu, Tun M pegang berapa banyak kunci untuk pupetkan dia. Macam contoh kes sembured dia tu. Jika laporan siasatan di umum sebelum hujung tahun baru nih, klimax lah kisah nih. Takde poin. Makanya kunci untuk pupetkan Assmi tu harus dikekalkan supaya mudah dikontrol arah buat itu buat ini lulus projek org itu , sign projek org ini... kau taknak sign, nih nampak? Kunci2 kau aku dedah nak?

Berbalik pada kes Dr Mazlee tadi. Mesti ada part2 yang Tun tak setuju berkaitan yg melibatkan krony2 dia. Ada lah tu projek2 krony yang si Mazlee batalkan yang buat taikon2 nih tekan Tun M dan si taikon2 nih juga pegang kunci2 Tun M yang buatkan Tun akur dak? Punya la bagus si Mazlee tu buat kerja dia, takkan menteri bagus yang perform nak disingkir ya dak? Mesti ada sebab asbab kenapa jadi begitu. Nak tarik telinga Mazlee tak leh. Kunci takde, maka apa yang berlaku semalam peletakan jawatan tu lah dia. Nasib si Mazlee tak melawan. Senang cerita, kalau kau jadi bos, kau lebih mudah punya staff2 yg pernah ada buat kes. Sebagai bos, pegang kes2 nih kemas2 supaya mudah kawal mereka. En bos dengan hanya tinggal nak mengugut, " kau lawan aku, aku report kes kau nih kepada bla bla bla ".. buat apa aku suruh!!!" nampak? Bayangkan jika Mazlee melawan... agak agak korang gempar lagi tak dengan cerita liwat? - Man Toba

Sebenarnya kita akan hidup aman damai.. Sentiasa saling menghormati hak masing masing jika Politik negara tidak diganggu oleh kelompok Ashabiyah Melayu Islam dan Cina..Muslim dan Cina masing masing mempunyai hak yg sama.. dan harus dihormati hak mereka... Mempertahankan hak masing2 tidak mengurangi hak selainnya.. Mengapa harus memaksa ? Kerana wujud kelompok Ashabiyah Melayu Islam seperti kelompok Salaf yang berpewatakan seperti Dr Maza yg kebetulan sama aliran dengan Dr Maszlee, PAS dan NGO seperti ISMA yg sering prejudis kepada kelompok Cina dan bukan Islam.... Dr Maszlee akhirnya tersepit walaupun dia dilihat watak paling terbuka dikalangan alirannya.., Kadang kadang Dr Maszlee sendiri terikut dengan agenda dan sentimen perkauman yg diperjuangkan kelompok Ashabiyah ini.. Kalau menolak tuntutan mereka.. Dr maszlee akan dilihat pro Cina dan DAP.. Begitu juga Teo Nie Ching dan DAP.. mereka tersepit dengan permainan politik kelompok Ashabiyah seperti MCA.. dan NGO seperti Dong Zong, terutama dalam isu Jawi dan Peruntukan Unitar.... Kalau DAP tidak tunduk kepada mereka.. DAP akan dituduh alat kelompok Ultra Melayu dan Radikal Islam... DAP akan dilihat pro Islamisasi...

Itulah permainan UMNO,MCA selama ini..Ini fakta, Itu ketakutan yg ditanam kepada kelompok Melayu dan Cina ketika memerintah Negara.. Mereka ini adalah kelompok Ashabiyah.. dan hari ini, datang kelompok baru, iaitu kelompok Ashabiyah yg bukan lagi bermain atas soal kaum tetapi Agama.. Ini bahaya yg diingatkan Nabi akan kelompok Khawarij.. Untuk menghadapi 2 Kelompok Ashabiyah ini.. hanya ada satu cara, Seorang Perdana Menteri mesti datang untuk semua kaum dan Agama, Setiap hak mereka dihormati.. bukan saling membenci dan prejudis diantara satu sama...ini yg cuba dilaksanakan Almarhum Tg Nik Aziz ketika akhir hayatnya menyatukan semua bangsa dan Agama... Maszlee – behind the black shoes...

I am inspired to write this article after reading all the comments in Mkini; bashing Maszlee Malik and I am sure, this piece will end up in the same tone. Maszlee Malik’s sudden resignation took many people and me myself by surprise. It seems that he was forced into the resignation by the Prime Minister. One wonders what the plan is since until Maszlee was appointed; the only other person who was interested in the job was Mahathir himself. Maszlee’s resignation speech – reading from between the lines would confirm that Mahathir wanted him out. Maszlee has definitely been made a scapegoat here. He has been always made to look like a dumb Minister who doesn’t know his job. Sensational media reporting and often unfair titles put him always in the defensive mode. He was polled as the second lowest – 27 out 28 in Malaysiakini’s poll on Ministers’ performance. This is understandable because most Mkini readers are middle class, mostly non-Malay and have a definite bias against him. They fear that Maszlee with his Islamic credentials was going to turn our education system into an Islamic one. Most DAP leaders scored high points. Now imagine if Harakah conducted a similar poll and you will know how the outcome would be. The Black shoe labelling never left him and it was always used to ridicule and undermine him. I am sure if we took a vote among students, they would prefer black shoes to white. Anyway that is not the point here.

Mahathir has decided to replace him and therefore it would be easy now to put all the blame on the Jawi issue, matriculation and other controversial stuff on him. Two of Mahathir’s staunch supporters Tun Daim and Rafidah Aziz have constantly taken swipes at him and that is further indication that he has fallen out of favour with the Mighty M. Let me share a personal experience and tell you why some of us have a soft spot for him. JPKK which is a network of contract workers in Government departments has been campaigning over the years to improve the plight of contract workers mainly cleaners and security guards in schools. We have previously tried in vain to meet with the previous education Minister. The only people who met us were some officers and department heads, who were not in a position to make decisions. But the PH Education Minister Maszlee quite readily gave us an appointment to meet and have a dialogue with us. I was very sceptical before the meeting based on the bad image formed in my mind about him. Before the meeting, his office asked for our memorandum and proposal, which was itself quite out of the ordinary. At the meeting, we were pleasantly surprised to note that he had actually read our memorandum beforehand. He was not pretending as if he knew everything, which most Ministers try to do. He addressed each of our proposals and directed his officials to act on them. He then told us that he will bring up our proposals in the Cabinet meeting the next day. I thought he was pulling a fast one because that is what most Ministers tell you.

  True to his promise, he issued a media statement after the cabinet meeting, saying that he raised the issue of parasitic and underperforming crony contractors will be blacklisted and replaced. He also said that the whole system needed to be relooked at and agreed to look into our proposal to employ workers directly and not through a middleperson who in many instances ended up taking a portion of the salary of the workers. This was the first Minister who actually looked at the fundamental issue rather than give the usual excuses. Since then, we had the pleasure of working with some of his officers, specifically Shaza, who used to update us on a weekly basis, working past office hours, listening to the many complaints we raised about the problematic contract system in school. This attitude changed our view that most of those working in Government ‘makan gaji buta’ and just work 9 to 5. For that, let me salute them. Now let me touch on other issues not raised in the current petition going around supporting him. For example, under Maszlee, student activists were more protected; he prevented University authorities from taking action on students each time they expressed themselves through protests and other actions. During previous Administration, the Minister always stood with the establishment and not the students. That is something which helped students to express themselves knowing very well that they had protection from disciplinary action. I was also told by many teachers that Maszlee made many reforms in the school system but many of his reforms did not go well on the ground because the bureaucracy was not assisting. It is not surprising that the Teachers Union NUTP speaks so highly of him. Many teachers too have since expressed how Maszlee did actually addresses some of the main issues raised by teachers.

He made many u-turns after bringing matters to the cabinet. This can be seen with the matriculation issue and Jawi. It is maybe that he is inexperienced as he has always stated himself or maybe he should have talked less, like the many PH Ministers who don’t say much, preferring to be silent in order to survive. Most of these issues were tough issues like JAWI, Matriculation and Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) are difficult issues.  These are issues which has been there for 6 decades which PH as a team have been unable to address since they end up playing the same racial game like the BN. Therefore it is unfair that Maszlee is blamed when on all occasion, the cabinet took the decision with of course ayahanda Mahathir sitting at the helm. On other issues - free quality breakfast, opening up hotel swimming pools to students, doing away with streaming and exams, making education accessible to OKUs and undocumented children. These are huge achievements compared to the black shoe which hardly got mentioned. It was reported that he opened 10,200 classes to cater for 24,998 OKU special children. On all these initiatives, I am with him because he has contributed towards creating a more caring society and opening up public spaces for the commons. Since coming to power, he has resigned twice. Once, after being appointed as the President of the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) when students and many spoke about conflict of interest and now. On the first occasion, even Mahathir supported his appointment but he took the right decision to resign but this time it is a no choice situation Mahathir called for his resignation and it could be part of a likely cabinet reshuffle. Maszlee should feel happy that he was not removed due to corruption or other scandals. He went in without a Datukship and came out without one. To Maszlee all the best.- S.Arutchelvan
