I feel like an imposter being this deep in the Malevolent fandom without listening to will wood. I know there’s no direct connection between the two but it feels like the Venn diagram is more of a circle

hmm thinking about the idea of love songs. i think the idea of what a love song is that we have in our culture is inherently a little bit flawed because we have the idea that any song written about romantic feelings is a love song and im thinking thats not exactly true because there is a difference between "romance" and "love". what i'm saying is not that love is a broader category and applies to things that are not romantic in nature. this is in fact true, but it's not what makes the important distinction here. the true distinction between "romance" and "love" is that romance is a societally defined type of interest in another person, whereas love is, essentially, a promise that you make when you build a relationship.
as such, what i call "love" here might be better defined as "care", as that implies more time and effort, but that's a different suitcase to unpack and largely unimportant to my point here, which is more about the societal conventions of what we call love songs. the point is, relationships can be built with other people, yes, but also animals, places, organizations, ideas, so on and so on, whereas romance requires another person, hence the difference between the ideas of "romance" and "love".
with that in mind, there are two types of songs we in western, english speaking, society call "love songs":
1) songs that are about a person's romantic interest in someone that is either definitively known to be unrequited (existing monogamous relationship, sexuality that doesn't align, etc) or simply not requited (aka romantic interest being unknown); and
2) songs about an existing relationship (keeping in mind my points about relationships not just being with people, but also places, things, etcetera) as is.
(some examples of the latter category: mountaintop by relient k, which defines the relationship in question as non-romantic; or i miss my mum by cavetown, which is - as the title implies - a song about the singer missing their mother.)
now, the thing that makes distinguishing these two difficult is the fact that songs about an existing relationship CAN be about wanting certain aspects of that relationship to change. in these cases, determining that a song is one or the other will hinge either on a) authorial intent or b) whether the song is more about what the singer wants (thereby implying #1) or the lack thereof in that relationship (which would imply #2).
to get back to the subject at hand: the term "love song", as we think of it, is an umbrella term that include both of these two categories, and i think that perhaps it is reductive to do so. with that in mind, i think perhaps it would be more appropriate for "love song" to mean only the latter, whereas the former is a category of its own. WHICH is not to say that the two can't overlap — just that if a song is about a person with whom the singer has no relationship, it cannot be considered a love song due to the fact that it is a song about infatuation, not love.
(another interesting wrinkle this provides is the fact that a song might start out in the first category and, as the writer develops a relationship with a person, might move into the second category as they write more.)

Lets talk about Nubbins exploring, barely going to the edge of town but its enough to still whatever slump he's in. A different, newer gas station, new houses...a taxidermist, a tool shop. He had always wondered where Drayton went off to on those weekdays, in between shifts at work. He was bored too, dammit!
If he was lucky he could pick up a few rides in the middle of the day, talk up a storm for sure if he could get the other person to. But when he had to walk...
Three miles wasnt too long to cover in the summer time, long days that ran well into almost 9 pm. He always managed to slip back home right around dinner, seeing that look Drayton gave, just knowing he got out, wigged some folks out - maybe stole a little. He never heard much of it, especially when Drayton was home and busy. Bubba never really had problems at home, anyway - (until that damn van ran up on the house..) Chores were done on the weekend to look busy when Drayton was home. The weekdays when Drayton was out at work were like dirt devils that loop and loop, wringing out Nubbins brain like a rag. He just had that itch, and you could really only stand that warm, stuffy place for so long before you busted out and ran. Maybe thats why Bubba spent so much time in the field, tending to those Sunflowers, getting seeds to sell at the gas station. Made just enough money at the end of the month for some good food.
And he always had something rattling around his pockets when he walked home. Stopping to sit on the side of a ditch, eat a little bit of what he had the change to grab.Hed picked up some dead branches, road kill in whatever store bag he had on him. He could always braid some leather, make a bracelet or two out of some hide to sell - If he found it fresh enough...And no one that went to Draytons had to know what was circling in that heater -squirrel, rabbit, hog, what-ever.
In that way, no matter what kind of shit Drayton threw at him for ditching the chores for a day, or kicking dirt up in the house - Nubbins did something. Nubbins provided too, hands on, the best that he could. Nothing at all could change his mind on that, not any row out or whooping could take that away from him. It made him feel like he really did have a stake in the house too. Like he could talk back a little.

reminder that my totk rants are me just rambling about my thoughts, ideas and complaints, im not trying to analyze anything, be smart, be right, debate or convince anyone who likes it that its bad just bc i think its bad or simply dont like the choices made, im literally just spilling out my brain so it doesnt keep haunting me
if you think something makes sense that i think doesnt i, and forgive me for being so blunt about it, do not care why you think it works, my opinion of this game will not change and i am okay with that
you are free to disagree with anything i say of course but i really dont care why, sorry
(sth i said only in the tags before but added now in this edit bc i think its important: its not bc i dont want to hear other peoples opinions and live in ignorance or something, but bc im tired and i PROMISE you i have seen 99.9% of those arguments already)
im not trying to be mean, aggressive or dismissive, but again, these rants are just me rambling with no intention of arguing with anyone, the only reason im still posting whenever i think of something thats bothering me (even if it might be dumb or be disproven in game bc i am not all-knowing and might be possibly misremembering something), and letting those posts be rebloggable/interactable is bc i have been told by quite a few people that they like reading them or that they feel validated in their own disappointment
thats it.
