I have Gathered some Data

@skysofrey and I recently got into a discussion about names in OFMD. Specifically, how many times does Ed actually call Stede by his name in the show? We could only think of a few examples each and that didn't seem right. And because I'm insane, I decided to rewatch and note down every time a name was used, who used it, and who was being spoken to. Here are my findings!

Before you proceed, please know that this is strictly for fun and because I was curious. There are likely errors in the data (I'm sure I missed some things, I'm just one person.) but! I still think that what's been gathered is very interesting.

Here are some other fun/important/miserable things that I found in my travels:

There is one more time where Stede calls Ed “Edward,” and the only time it isn’t said to him directly. This is when Stede is addressing the petrified orange.

Of the five times that Stede is called “The Gentleman Pirate,” two of them are from Ed.

Ed calls Stede by his name only twelve times in the series. Only two of these instances are spoken to someone else. There are two others when Ed is looking for him at the pier, and therefore spoken to no one.

There are only ten instances of other characters calling Ed something other than his name or “Blackbeard.” Two of these are from Izzy, during the scene in Spanish Jackie’s bar, where he’s informing Stede that Ed would like to meet with him. During this scene, he only uses “my captain” and “my boss.” This is one of the very few times he doesn’t refer to Ed to other people as “Blackbeard” and it’s at the time that is arguably the most important. (He’s an idiot.)

Out of the twenty times that Ed refers to himself, fourteen of those are as “Blackbeard/The Kraken.” He refers to himself with names other than “Ed/Edward” 70% of the time. 50% of the times he refers to himself by his name are during the beach scene in episode nine, and there is only one instance where he uses his name that is not in Stede’s company. ("Actually, I do want to be called 'Ed' from now on.")

Izzy only refers to Ed as "Edward" to other people four times in the show. Two of those times are when he's marooning Stede's crew, and each time he uses his name in that scene, he takes on a mocking tone. Meaning that 50% of every instance he's referred to Ed as "Edward" to other people, he's been mocking his name.

Ed calls Stede "mate" as often as he calls him by his name, but he only calls him "mate" directly.

Stede calls Ed by his name only once more than Izzy does.

80% of the times Ed refers to himself by name happen in episode nine.

Kuko - i was going to say washington again but honestly. Chicago Illinois again but like the better part of it and he would purposefully go to the bad parts on his free time

Jyushi - im drawing a blank honestly so lets just say washington (IM NOT EVEN FROM WASHINGTON)

Sasara - LA probably but the really touristy parts

𖦹 you both know her schedule is usually very busy and crowded, so you don’t see eachother very often.

𖦹 but every week she clears her day to go see you!! she’s always so exhausted from the day before so you two usually just hang out at home.

𖦹 she knocks on your door with a bouquet of flowers, the ones you said were your favourite forever ago.

𖦹 you scurry over to the door with a huge grin, knowing it’s her. you pull the door open and she gives you a smile and pulls you in for a hug, “missed you,” she whispers.

𖦹 she wiggles her nose into the crook of your neck and breathes in your scent. that one woodsy floral perfume she always said she didn’t like was now her favourite.

𖦹 she hates to admit it but she loves being the little spoon. just having your arms around her makes her feel so safe ☹️

𖦹 every time she leaves the city/state to investigate, you always ask if you can tag along. “y’know i wish you could,” she tells you, “but you’d be a distraction the whole time.” which makes you frown, but it’s true.

𖦹 she loves you, she does, really. but sometimes you can be a nuisance. “so, what’s his deal? murder? why? who? when?” asking all of the questions in the book when she’s trying to focus. she does eventually tell you to leave the room for a while, just whilst she finishes up.

𖦹 “sorry about that,” she starts as she comes over by the couch. “this case is very important to me. or, to us.” she waves you over to her and hugs you tightly, “now, what were you asking?”

𖦹 you give her your own theories on a suspect and she nods along, as if your theories make any sense. “what do you think?” you ask her, having doubts in yourself. “very good,” is all she says, smiling.

𖦹 her favourite thing to do when she sees you is order chinese food and watch the most terrible soaps ever made. she finds them stupidly hilarious

𖦹 you always model new clothes for her when you go to the mall or when she comes over. she looks you up and down quickly, smirking, “very pretty.” you smile back at her, giving her a twirl

𖦹 the odd time, the roles are reversed. your begging eventually convinces her and she throws on whatever skirt she finds and curtsies. her end of the show usually ends up with you clapping and cheering for her. she just rolls her eyes and covers her face in embarrassment

𖦹 she is definitely all for sharing clothes or jewellery. if you have a job interview coming up she will give you her most beautiful necklace for good luck

𖦹 without a doubt she is an absolute beast at karaoke. the first time she asked you out to karaoke you thought you two would have a few drinks and make a fool of yourselves. nope! she sings like her life depends on it

𖦹 scratches are so her thing. if you two are holding hands she will absolutely be trying to scratch your palm. same thing with back scratches or head scratches, she will melt

𖦹 she’s very protective of you, but not in an icky way. if you’re about to go to bed she might notice just a tiny draft and ask if you left the window open, you nod of course and she frowns at you, “it’s a precaution, that’s all.”

𖦹 if you tell her you’re making a stop at the store when it’s late she’ll tell you to give her a minute, even if she’s sick, she will be going to the store with you. “now, hold on a second. i’ll be just a minute, i’m coming with you!” she calls down to you from the top of the stairs just as you’re about to leave

𖦹 you always catch her staring at you, the tiniest smile on her lips as you speak about what could literally be anything. “-and then he told me to leave. i was shocked to my core… clarice?” she eventually snaps out of her trance, “hm?” you giggle at her, “were you listening?” she nods, “oh, yeah. of course i was. new lipstick shade?” she asks, glancing back at your lips slyly
