Mapping Festival 2022: A Visual and Auditory Odyssey

The Mapping Festival 2022 held in Geneva from May 19th to 29th was an incredible showcase of the talents of 47 artists from all around the world. The festival featured a wide range of immersive installations, psychedelic experiences, and groundbreaking technology that took participants on a journey unlike any other. The event was organized into two acts, Act I and Act II, each with its own unique venues and experiences.

Act I: Diverse Sensory Experiences

Act I of the festival was held at three separate venues: the Musée d'art et d'histoire, Bains des Pâquis, and L'Abri. This act focused on unique sensory experiences that allowed participants to explore the boundaries of their consciousness. Highlights of Act I included an immersive laser installation, virtual reality adventures, audiovisual rituals, and various sound performances. The opening night of the festival featured performances at the Musée d'art et d'histoire, including an electro-botanical installation (OALCO) that connected plants, humans, and the environment, as well as HYMN, a monumental immersive work exploring the relationships between man, machine, and nature.

Act II: Immersive Projections and Techno Mutations

Act II of the festival took place at Kzern, an old military barracks turned into a creative hub. A 12-meter geodesic dome was erected at the heart of the venue, providing a space for 360° projections and immersive experiences. Five local and international artists were given the opportunity to participate in a residency program under the auspices of the Mapping Festival. The second act of the festival featured a variety of unique performances, including immersive laser shows, quadraphonic sound performances, electronic sitar music, and monumental mappings. There were also conferences on optical and auditory illusions, which took the form of performative lectures. Notable performances during Act II included: - C03BRA's immersive laser performance with quadraphonic sound - jo~oj's electronic sitar performance during the mapping of Zhi Zhi's fresco - Chris Tell's hypnotic holographic rotors synchronized with his sound creation - Alex Guevara's unprecedented mapping on the Kzern control tower - Boodaman's live modular performance and Bowmore's extreme digging DJ set

STROMAE x ARNAUD LAPIERRE 

Artistic work commissioned by STROMAE for the release of his new album. He asked the renowned French designer and artist ARNAUD LAPIERRE, whose work was spotted by the singer and the agency DIGIZIK.

In order to collaborate and take up the challenge of imagining an installation allowing to live a particular experience in relation with the new opus.

MIRROR MULTITUDE

A visual experience inspired by the new album MULTITUDE by STROMAE, this installation invites you to an immersive and sensory advance in a 15-meter mirror-like corridor to discover the diversity of our reflections. This installation takes place in the ROGIER metro in Brussels thanks to the partnership of the STIB.

The more you advance towards the point, the more the space will open and widen, proposing a virtual paradigm; in which an echoing universe is revealed; to apprehend the multitude of our appearances.

The experience is counter-intuitive, the human being is not programmed to advance towards a corner, the more one advances, the more the reflections multiply. In the end we discover that all our reflections are different.

The goal is to engage the visitor in an emotion, in an action, to provoke a sensation, it's an engagement.

Bathed in music, let yourself wander out of time, in a rhythmic repetition of your image.

MIRROR MULTITUDE is a living and contemplative immersion, a multiplied introspection.

No question here of remaking the cover of the excellent album Multitude of the artist, but to appropriate the work

Hotaru Visual Guerrilla est un studio de création indépendant spécialisé dans l’art numérique et le design.  Il est composé de deux artistes espagnols, Jone Vizcaino et Ander Ugartemendia qui ont pour but de développer de nouvelles expériences audiovisuelles. 

A travers une pratique expérimentale, ils créent des œuvres hors du commun repoussant les limites des possibilités créatives. Chaque projet est un début unique, des oeuvres vivantes qui évoluent et grandissent en restant fidèles à leur idée originale.

Digital quarters a pour but de démontrer l’espace digital que nous occupons dans la société. Ces visuels sont des séries de sculpture digital en mouvement constant qui nous montre le conflit que les organismes ont dans le vide et dans l’espace.

Il est vrai que dans le monde d’aujourd’hui, nous devons occuper un espace digital pour montrer que l’on existe dans la vraie vie. La visualisation de ce projet peut donc toucher chaque individu et déclencher une introspection individuelle. Elle nous fait prendre conscience de l’impact des nouvelles technologies sur notre quotidien et de la manière dont nous les apprivoisons. 

L’idée de resserrer l’audio et l’image créent une oeuvre contemporaines puissantes. Ils nous plongent dans un univers parallèle où rien n’existe à part le mouvement de ces sculptures digitales.

Island enclosed between city and train station. The "window" is an imaginary perspective framing the railway complex blindly. In this invisible perspective, a present resonance exists between the saturated urban pattern of the Nansouty district & the leaking infrastructures of the Saint Jean station.This frame, reveals its importance to give birth to a work allowing a setting in echo of such a situation.

    Taking into account the historical and urban context of the district: the immediate proximity of the station and its uses, the work will have to be born from this heritage and evoke the notions of frames and superimpositions that evoke a railway station, to allow a graphic and evocative reading while freeing itself from the codes of the station to maximize the polysemic allusions. The work will also have to allow an appreciation of the greatest number without immediately relaying to the image of railroads. The installation shows a weaving of 130 soft green phosphorescent ropes, this network of ropes that splits echoes the railway lines as well as the 260 train departures that the station offers every day. The flexible system, moored at the periphery of the window, like a frame, is stretched obliquely to create a phenomenon of crossings to amplify a new perspective. Each string is tightened by tension in the center to create a disk, a denser object that proposes a second visual breakthrough, becoming a new dynamic. In order to accentuate a phenomenon of vortex, the peripheries of the rope will be treated and painted in order to create a gradient of dark green, to the natural light green of the rope.
