Starscream and Knockout get stuck after a mission goes awry or smth and they end up sticking it out in a cave waiting for rescue. Knockout got one of his servos crushed and OOOO Starscream's the only one that can do it because duh. They're alone.

Starscream who USED to look after two other members of his trine and now is all alone. So now those old memories are popping up in the back of his mind and making him emotional BUT HE WONT SAY IT BECAUSE KNOCKOUT IS RIGHT THERE AND HES AN ASSHOLE

Soundwave looked up from the datapad as Starscream, Thundercrakcer, and Skywarp came trampling into the room.

“We found them!” Skywarp yelled to him as the trio stumbled over to the main living area. The purple and black seeker promptly teleported over to him and grabbed him. Soundwave barely had time to place down the datapad on the table before he was warped over to where Starscream and Thundercracker started to set up… whatever they were planning.

“Query: Found what?” Soundwave asked.

“You haven’t told him?” Thundercracker questioned, looking at Starscream. Skywarp pulled the cassette master onto the couch. Skywarp teleported off again as the blue and white seeker sat down next to Soundwave.

“Well what if we couldn’t find it? Or the other thing for that matter,” Starscream countered, briefly looking back as he put something into the box under the TV.

“That’s fair,” Skywarp chirped as he teleported back to them, placing already prepared bowls filled with various snacks onto the table. Soundwave blinked at the now unhidden snacks as Skywarp plopped down onto Soundwave’s pedes and Starscream moved away from where the TV sat. The grey and red seeker sat down on the other side of Soundwave as he pressed something on the remote he grabbed.

“Query: Found what?” Soundwave repeated, this time sounding a bit concerned as the TV booted up.

“How old is this thing?” Starscream muttered.

“It’s pre-war at least,” Skywarp commented.

“Oh shush, we know that,” Starscream replied as the TV finished booting.

Soundwave was about to repeat his question once again before he saw the popup on the TV for whatever was inserted into the box below it. He went quiet, never even getting to speak as he stared at the popup as it was highlighted by the remote’s cursor and clicked on. It began playing.

It was a black screen briefly before whatever device was recording was moved to show what it was now facing. The familiar frame of Frenzy was onscreen, grinning at the camera as he began to speak. Soundwave felt his spark tremble as he heard Rumble’s voice come through the recording as well, clearly being the mecha holding the camera.

Thundercracker pressed into his side as the recording continued on, showing Frenzy attempting to create something out of metal-rope and crystals while he and Rumble talked about whatever came to their processors. By the time the recording device went back to black, at least thirty-eight crystals were broken and twelve metal-rope lines were torn apart. The device was dropped when the sixty-first crystal instead decided to explode into powder. The playback made a noise signifying a different recording began to replay. 

The next recording started already up, facing Laserbeak as she held her own metal-rope embedded with crystals. The camera moved towards where the voice came from when he heard Ratbat’s voice, now showing the odd cassette on screen. It was clear Rumble was still manning the camera as he was the one who answered Ratbat and the camera didn’t move. Another exploding crystal happened on the other side of Rumble as he dropped the camera, prompting Ratbat to pick it up and show that Rumble was covered in rainbow powder and Ravage was the culprit. Laserbeak spoke as Ravage laughed. Another cut, another noise.

Soundwave could barely hold his emotions in as he felt Skywarp press into him. As the recordings continued to play, Starscream eventually joined the pile of surrounding Soundwave with love and affection.

The second to last piece of footage shown was something Soundwave remembered clearly. Rumble, Frenzy, Ravage, Laserbeak, Ratbat, Slugfest, Buzzsaw, and Howlback surprising their cassette master on the day they figured out was Soundwave’s creation joor. (How the cassettes managed to convince Megatron to give him the day off, Soundwave didn’t know.) The camera was in the back corner of the room, facing the door and it caught the entire celebration in full, from the cassettes putting up the first crystal lines to him and all the cassettes save Laserbeak fell asleep in a giant pile in front of the TV in the room. Laserbeak approached the camera, gave it the best smirk she could, and turned off that recording.

It made another noise signifying the recording changed, and the last piece had such a different tone to it that it took Soundwave off-guard. Then he recognized where the recording was. The base he sent all but one his cassettes to (the one being Slugfest, not that it mattered now), which was buried by an attack made on it by some hostile neutral bots that called themselves Maximals. Said Maximals lived on this planet long before the war came to it, and the large group of beastformers were very unhappy about other Cybertronians trying to take over their territory. He vaguely remembered the Autobots trying to talk to them, their meeting almost ending in disaster before the Dinobots made their presence known. He didn’t know what happened after that, but he knew it wasn’t the same reaction as destroying whatever was made.

It was facing Frenzy, who gave the camera a terrified, sad smile while his plating rattled enough it could be heard. Through the recording, Frenzy said, {S-Sou-So-... Dad, if y-you’re hearing this, we l-love you with all of our sparks.} Laserbeak appeared on screen briefly, grabbing Frenzy and bolting off. The camera was tilted in a way that showed the collapsing ceiling behind them and Buzzsaw being crushed by all the rock and metal. Soundwave trembled as he remembered the ugly snap of Buzzsaw’s bond with him shattering. From the recording, Frenzy choked as he continued, {We love you s-so, so, much.} The roof collapsed over Frenzy and Laserbeak, the camera somehow being knocked forward and out of range of being crushed. The camera was grabbed by a different cassette, but he couldn’t identify which one as they bolted down the hall.

He finally realized who was holding the camera as the recording replayed Ravage’s voice. {Soundwave… we’re so sorry.} The camera barely showed it being shoved into somebot else’s arms before the walls collapsed in and the recording ended.

Soundwave released a pained kneen and he felt coolant run down his faceplate. The box under the TV popped the recording tape out, but the cassette master didn’t pay attention to that. He cried as he tucked into himself and felt the broken bonds with his beloved cassettes ache. The pulsing love from Thundercracker, Skywarp, and Starscream’s bonds flowed into him like a flood, but the painful reminders of his cassettes lessened their effect.

“We have something else to show you,” Thundercracker said, not removing himself from where he hugged Soundwave. Starscream didn’t move either, but nodded at Skywarp before the purple and black seeker stood up and walked off.

Soundwave looked at the two seekers at his sides, then at Skywarp as he returned holding some sort of pod in his servos. Starscream pulled away slightly and he could feel the eldest trine member smirking. “You did try asking what we found,” Starscream remarked. “Well, why don’t you find out?”

Soundwave gave Starscream a look as Skywarp moved the now basically empty bowls out of the way. The strange pod was placed on the table and Skywarp returned to sit by them. The purple seeker was quiet for a moment, then said, “We are conjunx endura, and we will be for all eternity. And you might not agree with this, but your pain is our pain.”

“We’re in this together,” Thundercracker said.

Soundwave leaned onto Starscream for a moment before moving to better access the pod. He pressed a button on the pod’s side labeled ‘expose’ and the metal retracted to reveal fogged by glass with a figure inside of it. A small, seemingly orange colored figure the same exact size of a cassette. His spark fluttered slightly. Maybe… did he never realize a bond was just muted due to all the other bonds breaking all at once? There was another button revealed by the outer metal being pulled back and he pressed it. The glass opened up and the cold air of the inner pod hit him.

He carefully grabbed the figure in the pod, cradling them as he lifted them out. His spark fluttered as, slowly, the cassette began to awake from their stasis. The cassette’s optics flickered on, their visor covering said optics going from resting grey to dull red to bright red, though it was clear the little one’s optics were still unfocused. Soundwave’s emotions scrambled to take hold of the slowly awakening bond and he poured all the fatherly love he could into it.

The amount of love he poured in might’ve ended up being overwhelming for Rumble, but soon enough that bond began to reopen and he felt the loving disbelief that rippled through their bond. Rumble’s systems rebooted themselves, as if confused by the now-active bond, but it calmed down and focused on finishing the reboot. Rumble’s systems finished their reboot and finally allowed the cassette to fully awaken.

Thundercracker and Skywarp tried to get closer to Soundwave and Rumble, while Starscream stayed out of the way. Rumble’s helm finally moved. In a small, underused voice, he chirped, “Sou… Soundwave?”

“Rumble…” Soundwave cooed, bringing Rumble closer to him.

“D-Dad!” Rumble cried, suddenly moving to hug Soundwave and Soundwave returned it. They both cried and were embraced by Thundercracker, Starscream, and Skywarp.

Imagine if there’s a homecoming at Jhiaxian Academy of Advanced Technology, where someone asked, “What’s the craziest thing that Shockwave has ever done?”

Windcharger (optics looking sideways with embarrassment): Well, you tell them

Trailbreaker: No, you tell them

Trailbreaker: Alright. As you know, Shockwave was famous for both his wisdom and his beauty, with an emphasis on the latter part. Shockwave once set up a rule just to encourage us to study harder - whoever achieved full points in a final could get a special reward from him - a kiss. Well, how do you say, a genius like him probably never struggled to learn anything. His exam questions were notoriously hard. And we had limited, if not skeleton, teaching staff at the academy, so Shockwave was the only lecturer for quite a lot of modules. Do you remember how miserable we were?

Windcharger: Luckily he’s quit teaching now.

Trailbreaker: Oh, thank Primus. Of course there were students who protested against such outrageous difficulties. Shockwave took their advice quite seriously and said he’d reconsider. And yeah he made a difference - the average grade increased from 30 to 40.

Windcharger: It was horrendous. I still wake up from nightmares that I’m sitting at a desk, taking those referred exams time and again…

Trailbreaker: Come on, wasn’t it you who stayed up till 3pm everyday?

Windcharger: I just wanna fragggin’ pass!

Skyscraper (probingly) : Okay so did anyone actually get full points in the end?

Trailbreaker: Hmm, Skids perhaps.

Thundercraker: Did Shockwave kiss him?

Windcharger: Better ask him yourself though.

Like, Starscream was messed up ever since Cryak. I absolutely love how you made a parallel between them two 'I will do anything to survive', almost a sort of curse where no matter how much you supposedly love someone, they are expendable to you and so the kindest thing you can do to someone you love is let them go, something Cryak didn't want to do to him. And why would she? She literally paid to have him onlined, for the specific purpose and she knew it was always on the table. And as far as it was implied it was something permissible for her to do. That fucks one up. "the relationship that should have been different, the most formative one - ultimately it was about consuming and exploiting and all the love was but a mask". The Trine had never met him not messed up. Like, he keeps manipulating people he cares about and he realizes he is not doing right by them and he likely even knows what it means to do better, but can he?

Skywarp already had messed up moral compass and some really repressed and internalized trauma from all his experiences in military + as a glorified ship engine. Like, his split loyalty was really something that made it difficult for not just Starscream but probably for TC too to fully rely on him (and he is the eldest!) after certain point. I feel like once it became apparent that there was a conflict, he didn't want to give up either on his trinemate or Megatron, and so in an attempt to keep both ended up picking Megatron, again and again bc it felt easier (especially as he did come from military background and while he is a troublemaker, he still likely structures his baseline understanding on 'correct' way around military hierarchies). And also Megatron was his hero and he knew him for a long time. He isn't used to introspection (and too much introspection would likely prevent him from functioning at all at this point) and seems to prefer overlooking things that could result in uncomfortable implications. Starscream really did instigate much of the conflicts with Megatron but, like, it doesn't seem like it came from nowhere. And even then, Was his treatment acceptable? But now Skywarp is metaphorically 'grounded' in reality without ability to warp around. He now realized that he had after certain point been enabling Megatron's horrible treatment of his mate and is now seems to be trying to do right by him but how exactly would it be when TC already left them (does Skywarp feel any resentment over TC leaving them even if he probably realizes why?) and Starscream is so distant?

Thundercracker feels the most ''innocent'' but like, I do not think he is exactly not complicit in the trine's messed up dynamics. There is a nice little thing going on with him where on one hand he on the more 'moral' side (at least by abysmal standards not just of Decepticons but mayhaps of Cybertron at large) of the coin and so he hesitates to enact cruelty and even occasionally protests it. He tries to dissuade Starscream from staying where it would hurt him, or from doing questionable thing. But. Even then he is mostly 'along with the flow, even if the flow takes him in directions he hates. As much as he tries to take care of those he loves, to do the right thing, he feels complacent in how he keeps many of his doubts to himself because of his many doubts and too often seems more like a bystander. It is almost like, he acts definitely but by the time he decides to take action, it may be too late. But what he could have done different, in the end? Like, it is not as bad as telling Starscream he deserved it or continuously pushing Skywarp away or being generally manipulative and abrasive. But like. I wonder if he feels deep inside he should have tried more to do what felt right instead of what felt 'safer'.

It'll be fun they said, Trailbreaker thinks, wrapping the torn strip of fabric around Damus’s hands. Wyatt hasn't stolen anything in a WHOLE WEEK, he should get a REWARD-

Trailbreaker takes a breath, tying a knot to keep the soaked fabric in place around what's left of Damus’s fingers. The 14 year old only had 7 left in total, and wouldn't appreciate Trailbreaker fucking up what he did have.

Windcharger sat nearby, staring blankly at the water below with one foot swinging over the edge. He'd wanted to go to the aquarium, and none of the other kids had argued.

Trailbreaker ruffled Damus’s hair and looked over to Soundwave, busy trying to keep Thundercracker and Skywarp from attacking Skids.

It wasn't Windcharger’s fault the tsunami hit. It wasn't anybody's fault their world had become water and rubble. Trailbreaker was in charge. It was his job to keep these kids safe, their foster parents probably long lost to the ocean.

There was a brief scuffle between the twins, broken up by a yowling cry from Ravage. The Maine Coon stood on Soundwave’s shoulders, hissing at the twins.

Skywarp huffed and turned away, but Thundercracker seemed suitably chastised by the cat. Skids seemed…tired.

But they were all tired.

Trailbreaker left Soundwave to it. He trusted his foster brother to keep the twins in line.

He was suddenly reminded of the fact that Soundwave had two little brothers who were twins themselves. They'd gotten adopted. Did they live in the city? Were they safe, or lost to the water and broken stone of their home?

What about the twins’ third brother, Simon? Was he dead or alive as well, and was that why the twins kept acting out? Fear for their missing family?

Trailbreaker sat down next to Windcharger and tried to ignore the fact that Soundwave was probably thinking his brothers, his real brothers, were dead, and the twins triplet too.

“You doin’ okay?” He asked Windcharger, scanning the 15 year old for injuries, something he could've possibly missed. Damus’s hands had been covered in glass and he hadn't noticed, nerve damage and adrenaline leaving the younger boy unaware until the blood made him slip when they were climbing over rubble, almost causing the 14 year old to twist his ankle on the broken concrete.

Trailbreaker couldn't let that sort of mistake happen again.

“I'm hungry.” Windcharger said softly, fiddling with the fidget toy meant to keep his hands occupied, to keep him from stealing things. The bright paint was practically gone from the plastic.

Trailbreaker winced, running a hand through his soaked hair.

They hadn't eaten in days. It was hard to find anything not soaked through and rancid. Not like any of them could fish.

There were fish around, but it seemed like those fish were more interested in turning a bunch of teenage boys into lunch rather than being lunch. It couldn't last like this for long. They had to get something to eat, or they were going to go nuts.

Using nicknames from a DnD campaign and pretending to be on an adventure only worked for so long. The sound of a renewed scuffle behind him as Skids shouted something incomprehensible at the twins behind him was testament to that. They were hungry, and tired, and scared.

They were all so so scared.

“We’ll figure it out.” Trailbreaker said softly, resting a hand on Windcharger’s back. It was meant to imply the group would stick together, but Trailbreaker knew that he and Soundwave would be making a plan while the rest of the boys slept.

They were the oldest. It was their job to keep their brothers safe. Their foster parents had practically drilled that into them, between the belt and the missed dinners anytime one of the younger boys broke a rule.

Their failures to be good examples made them bad influences on the others.

Trailbreaker couldn't afford to be a bad influence right now.

“What's that?” Damus spoke up, his voice trembling and breaking the silence. His burned face was turned away from the others, his single green eye locked onto something in the distance.

Trailbreaker stood, Soundwave next to him in a moment as they tried to spot what Damus had seen. A boat, maybe? Help, finally there to get them out of this watery grave?

Trailbreaker felt Soundwave intertwine their fingers as they watched the largest mer they'd ever seen swim towards them. He squeezed back, panic filling his veins.

“Get back.” He whispered, before turning to the other boys.

“Everybody get back! We don't know if it's friendly.” He barked, pulling Damus behind him with his free hand. “Just. Just stay back.”

The mer continued its steady approach, tan body breaking the water as blue eyes watched them with unnerving focus.

The twins pressed against his back, Skids in the corner of his eye on Soundwave’s other side. A clump of terrified children, sticking together even when common sense said they should've listened, should've left him and Soundwave to take the first blow.

Trailbreaker took a deep breath, and prepared to fight for his life. For the lives of his brothers

The bunny bot OP implies that he stomps his feet when he doesn't get what he wants and there's something about a forty foot demigod robot stomping his little feet because you told him you had to go to work that's just so darn cute and funny.

Also does the cat on lap law apply to the seekers? Does this mean when one of the seekers (most likely Starscream because he would weaponize it) lays their head against your lap you're not allowed to move until said seeker moves?

Hell yeah, we are bunnifying the fuck out of Optimus. Though, to be honest, I feel like TFP Orion fits the bunny vibe more. He’d unironically stomp his little (several-meter-tall) pede, and use his ear fines to emphasize his emotions even more (there’s a very high chance he’d weaponize this trick against you just to make you spend more time with him or cuddle him longer)

And yes. Just try to move your knee or shift your legs even slightly because they’re falling asleep. Starscream will immediately launch into a tirade about how you must sit still and not sabotage his downtime. He stays in your lap until he gets bored — or until Megatron calls him away. Does his loud purring and the way he nuzzles into your knees make up for the complete loss of feeling in your legs?

And that’s just one Starscream. If the entire Trine decides to take a nap on your lap, you might as well cancel all your plans for the next several hours because you will not be moving. Maybe Thundercracker will be merciful enough to let you take a bathroom break, but Skywarp and Starscream? They’re far too busy soaking up your scritches, blissfully ignoring the fact that you’re slowly losing circulation in your legs

Seeing your answer to the last ask made me wonder if you have any headcanons about Starscream's and Knockout's origins/backstories? We know Starscream was raised in the military cast, his age is the Cybetronian version of middle-aged (as he is 100% younger than Megatron or Optimus, but older than the last pre-war generation.) while Knockout remains a mistery. By "origins" I also mean literally how do you think they were made, how old they are, if they they ever had someone resembling a parent, sibling or any family? (Of course I'm open to everything you want to share, I'm just obsessed with the concept of alien spiecies where adoption is the norm)

I have the most fun when exploring within the scope of the canon story or what comes after it, so I don’t have a ton of HCs regarding things that came before TFP (I even feel like leaving things shrouded in mystery adds to the appeal in a way), but here are some thoughts!

I imagine Knock Out is younger than Starscream, but still middle-aged, at the tail end of the same generation—the human equivalent of his mid-40s, while SS is in his mid-50s. A Cybertronian generation is long as hell, though, and combined with the fact KO and SS seem to come from different cultures / walks of life, they likely had different experiences growing up that cause some of their proclivities to elude each other (a real phenomenon—I am technically Gen Z but was born before a lot of Gen Z-associated quirks were able to take hold, so I have more in common with Millennials 💀).

My opinion on this may change as I get to know Skywarp, Thundercracker, and their canon relationships with Starscream better, but Transformatron’s Crawling Back To You sold me on the HC that TFP SS is largely unpainted because he stripped his iconic colours after his trinemates died (noting “trines” are a fan-concept as well, but TFP has precedent for pseudo-familial flier units in Skyquake and Dreadwing).

Another thing I imagine is that Starscream has a degree of scientific expertise, as this seemed to be implied in the canon as a nod to his G1 roots (knowing how to use the cloning lab and other complex tech aboard the Harbinger, knowing how to do surgery on himself, being in charge of Shockwave’s station before he returned to the Nemesis, being able to nerd out with Knock Out in s03e08, assisting Shockwave in Rising, etc)—he just keeps applying it to harebrained “get results quick” schemes, so they always go awry.

Knock Out is a Decepticon, but s01e10 implied he wasn’t actively a part of the Nemesis crew until Starscream summoned him and Breakdown to help deal with Megatron’s situation. If I were to decide on what KO and BD were doing before joining the crew, it would be dismantling other bots for parts to sell on the black market and doing illicit frame mods. Some moments that can support this include:

s01e10, KO says “I’ve done plenty of bodywork, Starscream, but I’m better at breaking ’em than fixing ’em”

s01e11, KO and BD’s exchange when the former kidnaps Vince implies using hostages to lure prey is a tactic they employ frequently

s01e15, KO calling SS’s equipment obsolete and excitedly suggesting various specific upgrades to give him

I also headcanon that Knock Out and Starscream have some sort of amicable shared history, though I tend to leave the exact nature of their interactions, and the amount of time they’ve known each other, up in the air… I just think that—considering SS wanted Megatron dead at the time he dialed KO—he wouldn’t have called upon a doctor who would throw a wrench in his assassination plans 😂 This implies KO is a ‘safe’ choice for him, which can be supported by the fact he’s always hanging out with KO, generally seems more relaxed with him (well, as relaxed as someone as tightly-strung as Starscream can ever be), and keeps taking him for granted LIKE AN IDIOT!!

KO was also, AGAINST ALL ODDS, weirdly on board with most of Starscream’s schemes with no direct explanation, so I always HCed they know each other fairly well, to the point KO liked SS despite the warning signs. Knock Out’s affinity for SS was an interesting contradiction of his usual behaviour, to me—for someone who claims to want to side with the “winning team,” he sure was shacking up with a loser (who was NOT respected on the Nemesis) all the time…

I don’t have any specific headcanons about how they were made beyond what I talked about here, nor do I have anything on familial setups beyond the Seeker trine + the idea they end up in a colony with other ex-Decepticons or Autobot-negative neutrals post-canon… But as I absorb more TF media maybe this will change!

(Though, tangentially, this reminds me that @dallacuna and I talked about a post-Rising scenario where Shockwave gets fixated on the idea of family units due to Autobot-human influence, and so he ‘gifts’ Knock Out and Starscream ‘children’—Slipstream, Glowstrike, and a third mild-mannered ‘son’ for contrast—cloned from their CNA… KO and SS absolutely hate this and want their progeny dead, but everyone else stops them LMFAO

“Why didn’t you just make your own spawn?!” “Seeing as I do not have a partner, that would be most illogical.” [flustered sputtering] “Knock Out is not— We’re not—” [KO giving SS the most pissed off look ever] “…Well, fusing our CNA without permission is the most brazen violation of—”)

Some other misc HCs:

Knock Out would only have gone to medical school as an excuse to gain access to special resources and then drop out, cuz he could not withstand the rigour

KO’s villainous tendencies are more ‘nature’ whereas Starscream’s are more ‘nurture’; I feel like KO was just wired weird and the whole gazillion-year war doesn’t lend to an environment that dissuades his sadistic tendencies—though he can and does mask well when needed—whereas SS was probably a decent guy before the propaganda and trauma warped him into something wretched

On that note, while Starscream goes through the Dark Trials every other cycle, I always got the impression Knock Out has been lucky in life—he’s never known true hardship until joining the Nemesis crew, and even then the worst things that have happened to him are losing his precious lackey who did all his work, getting his paint DEMOLISHED in NYC, and Starscream making him feel like an idiot for caring. He seems to have a high distress tolerance and bounce back from things easily, so I feel like if something traumatic ever happened to him he would not know how to process it
