very long post about how i as an Australian think the American date structure is silly and confusing under the cut

as an Australian i already think America is pretty funny, like the imperial system is both confusing and incredibly funny to me, but what i really don't get is the way dates are written in America

like.... for context, in Australia, we write days like day/month/year. and i like this because the most important information is the thing you read first. you want to know what day it is, you just look at the first two digits you see and you're done!! in some other counties like Japan and South Korea, they write it like year/month/day, which i also think is ok because it's still in a cohesive and easy to read order. you just go to the end of the date to see what day it is and it's simple!! it's all good! it's easy to read! this is nice!

but for some reason, the dates in America are written like month/day/year and i'm just..... i'm so confused!?!??!? why would you jump to the MIDDLE of the date to see what day it is???? it's so cluttered and jumpy and trying to read it in order is just... kinda irritating. the most important and immediately needed information is shifted to the middle of the date ans then you gotta go back and then jump forward again if you wanna read the whole thing and i'm just. actually bamboozled at that. who did that. who is responsible for that blunder at the workplace. i will find them and i will break their kneecaps and i-

ALSO you have no idea how many times this date format has absolutely screwed up schedules and post dates for me. imagine that there's like an online event or something coming up and they have a schedule for what day they're holding it, but it's just written like 05/03/2024. my Australian ass is going to read that as the 5th of March 2024, but someone in America is gonna read that is the 3rd of May 2024. do you see how confusing this can become. there is zero distinction between the two dates because they're written in the exact same way but have a different structure. this is fine for dates that go over the number 12 or are the same number, but it's still confusing and frustrating, especially when the website doesn't say what timezone setting you're on or won't let you change it (which some of them don't). it's quite a specific issue but it's still an issue and i hate it i don't like it i want it fixed please patch

maybe i just have a more logical way of thinking and i like having things be in order, but goddamn just write your dates properly i can't take it anymore /nsrs

have you all heard of 猫ミーム (lit. cat meme)? it was a big meme video format on japanese youtube a few months back and they're very silly but i think they're genuinely good reading practice.

basically the meme is that they take these stock tiktok cat footage and turn it into a story about their day or something that happened to them. there's no talking but they put words across the screen to show what's going on. some are definitely more unhinged than others but it's a really cool look into daily life in japan that's told in a funny way imo.

Hello hello!

Here is a Dreamwidth-based Transformers kink meme that has been set up to run alongside and complement @tfanonkink over here on Tumblr! This meme is intended to a) provide an alternative place to post (and crosspost!) anon prompts for those who find the Tumblr format less convenient for kink meme purposes, b) provide a place to more easily fill prompts from there or Tumblr while remaining anonymous, and c) idk just be a Transformers kink meme after the old one on DW died, really. Shrug.

The basic gist: go leave anonymous fic (or art!) prompts there for people to go write fic, and/or go fill some of those prompts by posting your fic anonymously. You do not need a Dreamwidth account to post; anonymous commenting means that's not needed!

Obviously a lot of people will be using @tfanonkink directly on Tumblr, and this isn't intended as a replacement. LOL, I had just automatically rearranged my stats graph to rank fics by kudos instead of hits. It's:

Season of Courtship (inevitably), a Darcy/Elizabeth canon-compliant engagement interquel I wrote as a teenager;

But Thou Didst Not Leave His Soul In Hell (always a pleasant surprise), a short AU in which Luke convinces Anakin/Vader to flee the Empire with him;

per ardua ad astra, a Rogue One+ANH Jyn/Cassian AU in which Jyn, Cassian, and Bodhi escape Scarif only to get trapped on the Death Star and forced to pass themselves off as Imperials;

we get dark, only to shine, a longggg yet unfinished AU of The Borgias in which Cesare and Lucrezia begin their affair during S1 instead of S3 (CW for canon sibling incest, murder, etc).

Contradictions and Varieties (baffling), a short Darcy/Elizabeth AU I wrote for a fest in which it takes them slightly longer to get together.

4- Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

I try, especially with fics I'm actively updating, but I'm always behind on it. I mostly just get distracted and forget.

5- What's the fic you've written with the angstiest ending?

Oh, interesting question! I don't write a lot of angsty endings, but there are a few options, and I think it probably would have to be the gift of men, a short (~1k) Fourth Age fic in which Eldarion goes along with a politically convenient marriage to one of Faramir and Éowyn's daughters, and falls in love with her, only for her to die of old age while Aragorn and Faramir are still alive and Eldarion remains young.

Honorable mentions: Set On This Path (Luke and Leia are brought up in the Empire + fusion with the story of the bloodbending brothers in B1 of Legend of Korra, complete with murder-suicide) and the last day (a chirpy epistolary fic that takes an abrupt turn after the genocidal attack that begins the Guild Wars games).

6- What's the fic you've written with the happiest ending?

Um, just considering the ones that have endings, to be fair, and ... hmm, that's harder. A lot of happy endings! Probably the ones that are happiest for me, personally, are First Impressions (m!Elizabeth/f!Darcy re-telling of P&P) and whatever we deny or embrace (f!Cassian/Jyn).

7- Do you write crossovers?

Not often, but sometimes! Like now.

8- Have you ever received hate on a fic?

Yes! I've gotten hate more than once wrt Season of Courtship in various versions (even before it become so overwhelmingly the popular favorite of my fics). The rest has been on other fics and mostly on ff.net.

TBH the subtler stuff bothers me more than outright hate (corrections based on adaptations or fanon or expanded universe material I already said I wasn't using, concern that I might switch permanently to a new format I'm trying out, etc).

9- Do you write smut?

Very rarely. I respect people who can write good smut (hi incognita!), but I'm definitely a fade to black sort unless the ship is already so out there that I'm long past feeling self-conscious about it.

10- Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Yes. It's happened a couple of times, but the main one was someone who stole a few Austen fics from various people and tried to piece them together into something they could sell on Amazon. One of the fics was The Rich Are Always Respectable (not what I would choose to plagiarize if I were going to, but ... okay).

11- Have you ever had a fic translated?

Yes, several times. I think it's cool!

12- Have you ever co-written a fic before?

I wrote a short fic with my friend @tulinlina many years ago :)

13- What's your all-time favorite ship?

Darcy/Elizabeth. Truly this ship is the terror of the seas!

14- What's a WIP that you want to finish but don't think you ever will?

Oh, man. This probably requires more self-knowledge than I really have. Um ... I hate saying it, but we get dark, only to shine is likely this. I had so many plans for where it was going to go, but I'm just in a very different fannish place these days.

15- What are your writing strengths?

It feels weird to say, but I think I write solid dialogue (it's certainly my favorite thing to write!) and fairly clean prose in general.

16- What are your writing weaknesses?

Description is my truest nemesis—I tend to place scenes in just empty or vaguely described space. Fight scenes and that sort of thing are really difficult (for related reasons). Finishing things—my stuff nearly always grows out of control and it screws up pacing and so on.

17- What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

A little goes a long way, IMO. I did a bit of it in my fic about Leia and Cassian and Alderaanian, in tongues and quiet sighs, so I can't judge it too hard, but it's very much something to handle with care (especially with conlangs—Tolkien fic can be pretty grating this way).

18- What was the first fandom you wrote for?

Tolkien! My first attempt at a fic was a Faramir-goes-to-Rivendell-instead-of-Boromir AU that never got very far.

Well, my first serious attempt at fanfic, that is—I wrote original stuff for years before that, and I guess technically I tried to write Trixie Belden fanfic when I was about 10 ... and the original stuff spun off from a piece that was basically a Secret of Mana fanfic I wrote even before the Trixie Belden stuff. But in terms of something written within a fandom community, the Faramir fic.

19- What's a fandom/ship you haven't written for yet but want to?

Hmm. I'm not sure, actually. I mostly just write stuff if I feel like it. Oh—it's cheating, but I've barely written Korra/Kuvira even though I adore the ship. I'd like to write a proper Korvira fic someday.

20- What's your favorite fic you've written?

This changes pretty often, though there are always a few that come up when I'm asked. At this moment in time, probably The Jedi and the Sith Lord, the third (sort of) of my f!Luke Skywalker fics, and the one where the story finally swerves off the canon tracks and becomes its own thing. Maybe (probably?) not my best work, but the Lucyverse is my baby and I think TJATSL is my best work in it.

Happy late Melly Monday folks!

Time for another commission blog. And it's from a newcomer to the commission space. And that is Byx_Xeno and the collection of silly kicking bag comics of Aizel and Hero Melia

Byx is such a funny artist. Last year, she did a really great Sena meme that I'm pretty sure most of you heard of where she drew her in this very memey pose while saying "Yipee"

Which then garnered a lot of attention with it. And then she would put the Sena art in places where the art is in a diagetic world.

It really resonated with a lot of people last year. Which really captured my attention especially. It was until then where I saw this:

I think this was really well marketed for what Byx wanted to do. She didn't intend to do a lot of commissions at the time, but she wanted to find a way to make a bit of income while also being goofy and silly at the same time. And I think it worked really well.

So that's when I wanted to do my own "silly" commissions with Melia. I wanted to go with a more slapstick approach, which is when I thought of Melia's relationship with Aizel in Xenoblade 3. Where Melia loves to mock him because he is named after a previous soldier who failed to defend her. So conveniently, one of her personal guards just so happens to be named Aizel end up defending her majesty, and Melia is playfully mocking him in her ascension quest.

Obviously, Melia wouldn't *want* to hurt Aizel in this situation. Which is what the commission really is about. What would Melia do if she were to hurt Aizel in the most comedic way possible? Well... just STARLIGHT KICK HIM OF COURSE!

I think it's a very funny way to portray both Melia's character, and what I wanted for the comic strip. So that is where we went.

Unfortunately, due to a limit to how many images I can show on this blog, I can't really show the wip pictures. But they were really cool though. Byx did them on this interesting looking paper with a warm light in the background. I find it very unique and it's a shame I can't show it. Maybe in another commission blog, I can show the wips in detail.

But yeah, so how did the comics turn out? Well... they turned out fantastic! They just are so comical that it was just so worthwhile to commission her. They really seem timeless with the simple, cutesy designs and colors. The use of the dialog clouds and font being drawn in was so great. The expressions are also great too. Melia at the end smiling just cracks me up 😂. I also hope you all enjoy it too!

Byx always has her commissions open through Ko-Fi. Definitely check her out, as she puts in amazing work making silly art in both a diagetic and non-diagetic format.

💖 What made you start writing?

I was one of Those Kids growing up that would read a book a day, so that instantly set me up to be interested in learning how to write. Avid reader plus excelling in my literature classes effortlessly plus being surrounded by a group of friends who were also interested in writing as an interest so we all wrote and passed around our stories! Also I just love playing with both existing narratives (through fic) as well as building my own worlds from the ground up.

🛠 What tools/programs/apps do you use to write?

I pretty much exclusively use Google Docs these days to write unless I'm formatting for a print, then for prints I do use Word to fix all the formatting. The convenience of being able to edit my works on any device, anywhere, at any time is just too convenient. I wrote I think at least 25% of RM on my phone during my lunch breaks and then I wrote at least half of Defiling the Divine on my phone at a wedding last year lol.

🛒 What are some common things you incorporate in your fics? Themes, feels, scenes, imagery, etc.

Ooh I'm usually sparse on imagery so not too much in common there, but thematically I'm always drawn towards focusing the narratives on duo characters (usually siblings) who have a dynamic of protector/protected, strength/cunning, that have complementary traits. Self-acceptance is usually another pretty big theme I like to write alongside tender, heartfelt emotional moments between the characters as they do everything except outright declare their love for one another. And then lastly there is always the devil on my shoulder telling me that no matter the ship, no matter the characters, no matter the setting, that I should cave and write an incredibly intimate bathing scene/fic.

Are you the same person from Instagram? Yes, I am.

Why are you no longer on Instagram? The issue of image quality, the format they force you to upload posts in, and the fact that, apart from photos, you can't do much else is inconvenient. Additionally, Instagram no longer allows searching hashtags chronologically, which is annoying because I can't share recent content as it will always be overshadowed by what is popular. Also, reblogging on Tumblr is more convenient than just having to upload it to stories and then save it as a "highlight." I don't think I'll completely abandon Instagram; I'll just activate it as I feel comfortable.

Can I submit my own contributions? Of course! You can do so either in Ask or through private message.

You reblogged something, but I really don't want my content on your blog. No problem! I know some people like to create content for Nekomaru and Akane purely in a friendly, non-romantic way, and it might be uncomfortable for it to be on a ship-dedicated account. that post going around about that transmen chaser thing is almost exactly why i keep saying that it isn't just because they're trans that they arent as equally as misogynistic as cismen.

its the reason why i hate men, not because they're all evil and horrible with no exception, but just like a cop, you can NEVER be aware of who is and isnt going to just use their privileges and advantages to stomp you.

its expected of men to act like this, men are the priority in society so acting with disrespect to other, specially women and femininity in general, as a men you can do this with no consequences if you do it right, its why a lot of memes formats follow a pattern of "Women = Boring, Men = Awesome", why misogynistic views like those posts are so normal, thats what they can do and get away with on a daily basis, society prioritizes men and shames anyone who falls outside of that category and the vast majority of them either take full advantage of that, take advantage when convinient or passively reeks the benefits of it in silent despite knowing what they're doing.

men by design have an advantage over anyone else and they have to ACTIVELY opt out of it, they need to make their own conscious decision to not partake on that and speak up against those injustices, to not let them benefit from this more than they already are and unless i see that from them, they are not trustworthy.

in my experience with many transmen, they have a very, very massive unchecked misogyny that is no different from gay men in the queer community, and the fact that that post and many others use the convenience of what society thought they were before coming out as a shield while transwomen cant even THINK of letting that be even SUGGESTED says a lot on how they are also benefitting from that, in a smaller scale, but benefitting nonetheless.

10.ㅤ| changes: ㅤhere are a few of the changes regarding my irulan as i follow her from the movies and what could be, knowing of a few changes they did to the books.

chani leaving at the end instead of bowing down leaves open for exploration of irulan and paul's relationship, as a political alliance and as a marriage. even odd parallels between leto and jessica.

irulan is trained by the bene gesserit, however, she is told she is weak due to her individuality and not following most of the rules that are set for her.

i believe irulan is fascinated by paul atreides, aware that his mother went against rules to birth a boy when only girls are in the order.

she is a writer and scribe and transcribe stories from one language to another and speaks plenty of them.

regardless of paul, irulan always knew she was meant to be empress.

brief-ish rant. i've complained, often, annoyingly, about the torture in this show. pushing aside the fact that torturing for information doesn't work, i think it's the sheer volume in this show in particular that has me so kneejerk upset about it. most shows or movies i watch (because i'm not going to pick to watch things that advertised to have a lot of torture in them), i can look away through maybe a few scenes and okay moving on. but torture itself became an Important Character / Plot note thing for dean, and with the torture subjects often being not-human there's (presumably) less moral qualms about torturing them, along with just a general standard action trope of using it for information. it's just so common and so accepted as standard operating procedure. and i don't like it. i don't like depictions of it ever, but especially not with this show's frequency, and especially-especially not with my special guys doing the torturing or being subjected to it.

5. What is a character you love, but don’t think you can write?

k//azuha. i adore him, have done since the first time he appeared, but i don't think i'd be able to capture him to a degree i'd be satisfied with.

also, i'd love to write one of the g//enpact ladies but i have no idea who bc i don't think i'd do any of them justice dklfgnlfhgj

6. Name 3 things you love most about your muse/muses.

1) i love that there's quite a variety of personalities within my muse list. i might joke that i have a Type (and i do) but there's actually quite a wide array of characters. it gives me the chance to explore different attitudes and values & keeps things interesting.

2) i can't not mention wrio here, since he's clearly the current favourite. the thing i love most about him is that he's more than what he shows on the surface. i especially love that he turned out to be nothing like anyone expected based on his look. i really enjoy exploring the depths of his character and i can't wait to keep building on that both through my own headcanons and through writing/discussing with partners.

3) i also love my villains. i find villains / antagonists really fun to write, because they don't adhere to any rules. the more morally grey the muse, the more fun i can have with them. i'm not afraid to get dark & i won't apologise for their behaviour in the context of writing (but neither do i excuse them or pretend it's remotely Okay. i'm not a villain apologist and i never will be)

7. What is one overrated roleplay trend?

overformatting replies. i don't see this anymore, so i'm either following the right people, or it's died (or dying) out. but for a while, there was a lot of - frankly wild - formatting trends that i just couldn't understand. now i'm all for making things look nice, of course, but when i can't physically read something because it's so over the top, it kinda defeats the point. if i'm straining my eyes to read your tiny text, or struggling to understand a word because it's got a thousand spaces in it, i'm gonna get tired real quick and i'll lose interest entirely. just... keep it simple. simple can still be pretty.

13. Is there one trope you can’t stand?

oh, man, there are quite a few. i don't even want to mention some of them for fear of ending up in tags i don't wanna be in. i'll let your imagination run wild with that one. generally, though, they're all relating to types of relationships that i just do not vibe with at all.

i guess one i can discuss is a villain getting an undeserved redemption arc - and by that i mean a redemption arc where everyone just conveniently forgets all the terrible shit they did and the villain is never held accountable for their actions. no. that's not redemption, that's bullshit. give me a proper redemption arc with guilt and accountability and consequences.

18. What is one thing you’d wish to see more in the rp community?

it's gotten a lot better since i first started writing here, but it will always need more work - communication, tolerance & patience. i'm so happy that my little corner of the community doesn't seem to have any problems in that department, but i know it's far from true for other parts of the community. some people take this silly little hobby far too seriously and they need to just... chill. that feels like a bit of an obvious answer but i think it's an important one, so... /shrug

-I won’t be counting Animation Mistakes, because Idk how to do that, and I myself am a beginner animator (more like incredibly amateur, to the point I’m asking my sister for help) Unless of course the Animation is obviously and clearly having a mistake for me to watch. (Or it is said in the wiki) The other reason is because I don’t want to keep repeating a scene just to check for an animation mistake.

-Accurate depiction on the fact that Flower Fruit Mountain is surrounded by an ocean, considering Wukong had to build a raft in order to leave it

-But somehow later in the series, there’s a path that leads to it.

-‘He’d destroying the Cheese T Stalls!’ ‘All the more reason to get this to Monkey King’ MK and Mei have priorities

-Also MK calling Monkey King, Monkey King despite the fact that he should know his name, given that it was Master Bodhi who gave it, symbolizing that MK sees Wukong as what he calls him

-I get why Pigsy is explaining this to Mei and MK, but I’m guessing the show had to work with season 1 on a whim since season 2 confirms that Tang and Sandy know each other.

-Sandy for the win

-‘How about that guy over there huh?’ ‘O-Oh! Yes!’ Again, this may be that the pilot was done BEFORE they decided that Tang and Sandy knew each other, but I’m gonna count it anyway

-Mei calls Pigsy, Piggy.

-‘OK’ no explanation, makes sense to me

-This show again reminds me that this is a Lego show

-‘I don’t go around pickin’ fights no more’ this kinda mirrors Sha Wujing a bit.

-What exactly was your plan there Red Son? There’s like 5 people in there, one’s buff, the other one clearly has battle experience, One will smack the shit out of him with no problem and the other has a magical staff. Poor General Ironclad would be dismantled in seconds.

-Wukong sure had fun traveling to Master Bodhi with Flaming Mountains around him.

-‘Safest way’ Main character ‘dies’ 0.000001 seconds later

-Ok Pigsy I understand why you’re angry at Sandy, but Tang won’t last a day in the Flaming Mountains, much less 5 minutes, you’re gonna have to carry him if you wish for him to come.

-‘Oh you’re just a noodle boy playing and being a hero’ Part 1 of characters seeing grown adults as children (Pigsy doesn’t count cause this guy probably watched them grow)

-You know the fact that MK already knows how to use the staff reminds me of when Wukong first had the staff with no battle experience and was probably smacking the shit out of everyone

-Main character death? Well no obviously we’re still in the pilot.

-‘There was nothing we could do’ I kind of found it weird for Tang to say this-the timing is just off-

-Something I’ve always wondered about the dragons is that Ao Lie and Ao Guang’s dragon form look more physical (IE more like they’re actual dragons) than Mei’s spiritual looking dragon, Ao Guang’s dragon might have that spiritual thing but Mei’s is just all green.

-Frankenstein all over again.

-Monkeys immediately trying to murder MK is hilarious, especially if you consider that’s probably their job.

-Main character trauma

-Does every Monkey here just hate MK or are they just mood? Also meme template

-To this day MK still struggles to walk across the rock path.

-You know season 4 foreshadowing, MK opening the seal got me wondering a few things, specifically WHAT KIND OF SPECIFICATIONS DID YOU ADD WUKONG?!

-It’s actually fun seeing the Pilgrims’ beta designs, like they have better designs in the future ngl.

-‘Sun Wukong’ Seriously who the frick is saying this?!

-We still don’t have an explanation as to why MK has Gold Vision, Wukong had to burn in order to get that, why does MK have it?

-What the hell was in that mural of them

-See what I mean, Tripitaka’s crown cloth thing (Idk what that’s called) was more longer than that

-Still, love that Zhu Bajie and Sha Wukong’s designs were just adjusted.

-Also small detail, both Zhu Bajie and Sha Wujing also have the fillet thingy

-When Wukong was guiding MK along, I legit thought that he was dead, because I hadn’t known about Journey to the West until somewhere around Season 2

-Also what was that vision? Like the rest seem more spiritual and this one guiding MK seemed more physical, what memory was that?

-‘Mr Tang was right, I really am delusional’ Bro you saw the Demon Bull King, FACE TO FACE, how are delusional?!

-MK kills Wukong, roll credits!

-Look, I love that Wukong is rolling into his transformations and stuff, but I’m wondering why he didn’t just turn back to his usual form, so I’m guessing he’s been playing shapeshifter to the point he sorta forgot his original form for a bit.

-Another thing is that even Wukong and MK have non-consistent faces!

-Wukong how dare you make the boi cry

-‘Oh shit I made the boi cry’

-‘I’ve been kinda watching you’ Why though? And for how long?

-‘What?’ Last flashback of him is a bird

-Wukong your Goku is showing

-MK just climbing on Wukong and him being unfazed just tells you his relationship with his monkey subjects

-*Screams in agonizing pain* Also- Tripitaka’s back to his present design.

-‘You fought demons and you didn’t die’ Wukong he almost did, and when you were fighting demons you were basically immortal by then

-‘Not just anyone can lift my staff’ Yeah it’s a 17,000 lbs pillar- You have to be crazy strong to lift that thing, which Means Red Son, DBK and PIF don’t have the strength of a god.

-THAT IS ONE BIG ASS CHIP!

-‘You can handle it! Consider it a trial’ One bold trial that is Wukong, then again you did fight the Demon King of Havoc (Is that right?)

-Also Wukong’s cloud looks different

-You know despite how Wukong teaches, he seems to genuinely care about MK, I just feel like he’s also pushing him away at times because he knows he’ll get too attached

-Buy Our Toys.

-‘It’s for ages 8 and up’ This show is really reminding me that this is Lego- but in the logical sense is 8 and up supposed to be cat years Sandy?

-To think all these Bull Clones and DBK have the same VA, props to him

-It’s a barrel roll!

-Tang knows how to fight I swear, but only for self-defense purposes

-The audio when MK brutally smacks Red Son around sounds so muted, like, there’s barely any SFX and it sounds so lonely

-Mei’s face also is inconsistent

-Tang please he’s a demon, he’s not dead, but I kinda understand why you’re poking him like that.

-I never realized but HOLY SHIT DBK IS HUUUUUUGE!

-Sandy and Red Son better work together at least for one episode, since they both give complex transformations for their vehicles.

-HAHAAHAAH- THE MOTORBIKE HAS AN ANTI-DBK SYMBOL-

-Again the Voice acting sounds like it was recorded and they just ignored everything else

-Sooo, when are we ever gonna use the Gold Vision like that again?

-Notice how DBK gains a wave of power from his expression after absorbing MK.

-MK is reborn, like most Monkey King adaptation titles.

-Sun Wukong traumatizes his friends part 1

-Love MK, MK for the win

-Again this fight scene is amazing

-Love how the writers made it so he tried doing it like Wukong, it didn’t work, so he uses something of his own from a video game, showing that while he is Wukong’s successor they are different people

-Ok both Wukong and MK must be crazy strong, but dare I say, possibly MK could be stronger than Wukong?

-‘You can’t just run away when I’m right about to win!’ So…what was he gonna do with DBK? Kill him?

-Love this ending, overall this episode was great to be continued in Bad Weather.
