A Bad Storm...

Oh dear! A disastrous storm has occurred today, leaving my precious land in ruins, the plants drowning within the overflowing pools of rainwater. I scurried over to the flour mill to ensure that the packaging was alright. As soon as I arrived, I was astounded by the sight before me. One of my lowly slaves was there, covered in flour from the now damaged packaging, that was supposed to be shipped to England tomorrow. She looked at me, her face clearly in shock. In anger, I dragged her back to the house and whipped her ‘til the crack of dawn. The other slaves watched her suffer her well-deserved punishment, probably now more aware and cautious of their actions in the future. I sighed in annoyance before commanding a couple of the slaves to go back and ground more wheat to produce more flour before the shipments were due. These slaves are so useless sometimes I wonder what they’re really good for.

I used to own indentured servants, but they were far more difficult to manage. We had to pay for their trip here, give them a wage, food, shelter, and they only worked for a certain period of time, according to their contract. Slavery is more efficient because they work without expense and work for the rest of their pathetic life. Now that I have slaves working for me, life has been much more productive and I was able to afford more tools and other things for my plantation and family. In conclusion, forget the indentured servants, just own slaves, they save your time and money.

I was asked by a collector to provide a guided tour of his priceless collection of African-American artifacts in celebration of #juneteenth Juneteenth is observed on June 19 to commemorate the end of slavery in the United States. It is also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day. On June 19, 1865, Major Gen. Gordon Granger came to Galveston, Texas, to inform a reluctant community that President Abraham Lincoln two years earlier had freed the slaves and to press locals to comply with his directive.  There is no one reason why there was a two and a half year delay in letting Texas know about the abolition of slavery in the United States, according to Juneteenth.com. Matthias de Souza, an indentured servant, was the only black person to serve in the colonial Maryland legislature. As such he is the first African American to sit in any legislative body in what would become the United States. Matthias de Souza worked as an indentured servant for Father Andrew White, a Catholic priest. He arrived in Maryland in 1634. Records record him as being called mulatto (a African/European mix). De Souza became a free man in 1638, after working the required four years as an indentured servant. In 1641 he was elected to the Maryland General Assembly, serving until 1642. Soon after, when Susquehannock Indians attacked the English settlers, de Souza became indebted to John Lewger and to planter John Hollis as he was unable to trade for furs. The last trace of Matthias de Sousa in the records of the colony is an order of the court in 1642 requiring him to reenter indentured servitude. He was ordered to serve John Lewger for a limited period of time to pay off a debt.
