The main reason for people not meeting their feeding goals for their new babies is perceived low supply. Perceived. Blew my mind when I first found out. What are your thoughts? 🤔 Advice from @imogenibclc on how to tell if everything is ok: Especially in the early days this can be tricky to know. There are some simple ways of knowing. 1. Monitor how many wet and dirty nappies they are having. After all what goes in must come out. From when your milk volume increases (usually about three days after the birth of your baby) you should see about 6 wet nappies per day. Your baby should also be having several soft yellow or mustard coloured poos per day. 2. Also look & listen for swallowing - when your baby is breastfeeding well you will see their jaw moving throughout the feed (with occasional pauses) If you can’t hear them swallowing look for the slight pause in their sucking when they swallow. 3. Weight gain 4. Look for signs that they are full and satisfied. Their body especially their hands and face will soften and often they will fall asleep on the breast or come off the breast on their own after about 10-30 minutes of active sucking & swallowing. . . . #breastfeeding #ibclc #nicunurse #informedisbest #normalisebreastfeeding #motherhood #selondon #london #newborn (at Rochester, Medway) https://www.instagram.com/p/B41gaxtg9PS/?igshid=1k9mv9cza4rhv

Sharing is caring, so I donated 1.3 litres of breastmilk to another mama for her baby. I've been pumping most days and have worked out a few tricks so now I get about 150-200ml per day! Breast milk is AMAZING and if I can help more babes get the benefits then I am so glad to help!

WORLD BREASTFEEDING MONTH 2020 - promoting and protecting breastfeeding/chest feeding for ALL! ❤️ #worldbreastfeedingmonth #breastfeeding #chestfeeding #breastmilk #inclusivebirth #inclusivebreastfeeding #placentamom #sacramento #placentaencapsulation • • • • • • #Repost @doulasforhumanrights • • • • • • WORLD BREASTFEEDING WEEK 2020 - promoting and protecting breastfeeding/chest feeding for ALL 😍 Posted @withregram • @illuminateinclusivebirth The post that started it all! (Original can be found on @thepregnantdoula.joeigowing , before I made @illuminateinclusivebirth separate from my social media following) . . . My breastfeeding/chestfeeding infographic is STILL making it's rounds online (thank you!!). What I've noticed is both TERFs (trans exclusionary radical feminists) and pro formula/fed is best people tend to take issue with it. . 🌈 Hate has no place in feeding babies, what someone else refers to themselves as doesn't take away from your feminine identity. I've gotten the same comments about my use of "birthing persons" - are you birthing? Are you a person? Are you feeding? Is the milk coming from your chest? You are a birthing person. You are a chestfeeding parent. . This DOES NOT mean you can't refer to YOURSELF as a mom/birthing woman/breastfeeding mom/etc, just in general info that applies to a wide range of people we should include all, and that term can still be used by you as well as others! 🍼 Especially with my studies regarding sexual assault, physical assault, mental health, etc I have an even greater feeling of adamency that people should feed their babies, period. I don't subscribe or post #breastisbest , nor do I fall in the #fedisbest camp. #informedisbest is a term I've read a post on @bebomiainc 's blog and THIS is what speaks to me. Happy Workd Breastfeeding Week! We’re 3 years into our beautiful journey. I always wanted I to do it especially after reading up about all the benefits. I wanted to make it as easy as possible for us both to sleep and to keep our baby happy. It ended up saving his life by flushing out the polycythemia as a baby then keeping his airways open while he had sleep apnoea. The hormones that are produced while a Mother is breastfeeding help to keep her aware of her babies breathing even when asleep. The slightest change in his breathing in the sleep apnoea days and I was awake and ready to help him breathe again. So glad our wonderful NHS gave him a tonsillectomy so he could breathe properly. It’s been a long journey and breastfeeding has been there to help all the way through. We love our cuddly bonding time although now it’s mostly when he sleeps and wakes unless poorly. I originally wasn’t keen to feed a toddler as I was constantly told it was weird growing up but seeing the wonderful peer supporter feeding her toddler and chatting to her about it completely normalised it for me. We are so lucky to have such excellent groups in Cornwall. Such as @bumptobreastfalmouth and @breast_intentions_helston. (There are many more I just haven’t visited them) I would love to thank all of the many wonderful Mum’s who give up their time to support us! Just because my son isn’t a baby doesn’t mean he doesn’t still want it and need the comfort. We believe in natural term weaning so when he is ready he will stop. He has already greatly reduced and will stop in his own time. I just want to help normalise infant feeding. Our boobs are for feeding and nurturing and I love it! 🎉🤱🤱🏻🤱🏼🤱🏽🤱🏾🤱🏿🎊 #lactavist #worldbreadt#worldbreasyfeedingweek2020 #nationalbreadtfeedingweek #normalisebreastfeeding #normalizebreastfeeding #breastfeeding #breastfeedingmama #breastfeedingjourney #breastfeedingtoddler #breastfeedingtoddler #naturaltermbreastfeeding #naturaltermweaning #stemcells #comfort #nutrition #mumma #breastfeedingsupport #informedisbest #empoweringwomen #naturalparenting #attachmentparenting #cornishmum #jerseycimums #mumssupportingmums #mumsofinstagram #womensupportingwomen https://www.instagram.com/p/CDcY48LHGmr/?igshid=6pi327vo9k6d

Two of my favorite things: 1️⃣. Knitting 2️⃣. Books that empower parents to make truly informed decisions for themselves and their babies. If you're pregnant, you've probably heard of #breastisbest and #fedisbest. One slogan touts the scientific benefits of exclusive breastmilk feeding. The other arose as a way to justify formula feeding or partial breastmilk feeding. Maybe you've also heard the phrase, "All that matters is a healthy baby." Sound like gaslighting to you? It certainly does to me. A healthy, adequately fed baby is the BARE MINIMUM of what parents should be hoping for. Empowering, optimal birth/postpartum/breast/chestfeeding experiences are what families actually deserve. We have to stop patting disappointed, traumatized new parents on the backs and saying, "Well, at least the baby is alive. Be grateful for that." We can do so much better. #informedisbest is a much more truthful, kind, and trauma-informed slogan to use when it comes to infant feeding and parenthood in general. Not everyone will be able to have a vaginal birth or be able to exclusively breast/chestfeed. Heck, not everyone has to want these things. They aren't for everyone. THAT'S A-OK, folks. Regardless, everyone has the right to all of the truly evidence-based information, appropriate healthcare, and genuine support that the world has to offer them. #informedisbest is written by @prof_amybrown, whose books focus primarily on kind and evidence-based infant feeding practices. This book doesn't give advice but instead focuses on how to read and interpret research, spot biases and untrustworthy research, filter through bad advice and social media misinformation, and how to ultimately make the best decisions for yourself, your baby, and your family. The info in this book is very applicable to everything pregnancy, birth, and parenting. I highly recommend it to my lactation consultation clients and my childbirth education students.

If you are pregnant and have said words to the effect of "I want to breastfeed, but I'll see how it goes in case I can't" do yourself a favour and: 1. Read a book (I recommend either The Positive Breastfeeding Book by @prof_amybrown or The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding by @lalecheleague_gb ) 2. Go to a breastfeeding support group (while you're pregnant) You will be glad you did both. And you will have more options, information and choice than you did before ♥️ . . . . #nationalbreastfeedingweek2019 #normalisebreastfeeding #informedisbest not #breastisbest or #fedisbest #allboobsaregoodboobs #abm #lalecheleague #amybrown #breastfeedingsupport Via @vanessa_theparentandbabyclinic 📷 @coppafeelpeople (at Kent, Kent, United Kingdom) https://www.instagram.com/mothermother.doula/p/By9f2D5g_SA/?igshid=1hgre1h2cxhl5
