Happy birthday, Mamo-chan!

(A late!) Day seven of @usamamoweek2023 : Midnight

Mamoru is celebrating his surprise birthday...after an unwanted umpteenth trip to the underworld (no thanks to you, Galaxia! >.<). With a decadent chocolate cake (with edible roses on the side, of course) and spaghetti* from his Usako, of course!

Behind the scenes: His Usako and their senshi friends (and Asanuma! and Motoki and Reika!) surprised him at his peaceful abode...at *you guessed it* the stroke of midnight! In addition, Chibi-Usa and Diana came from the future to join the surprise party crew!

*Note 1: the inclusion of spaghetti in this illustration is based on our family's (or typical Filipino family's, dunno if this is the same case for other countries, please let me know) tradition of having spaghetti - or pancit or other pasta - everytime there's a birthday/holiday celebration.

Note 2: Two birds in one stone! I did this little illustration in celebration of Mamoru's birthday AND I had to catch up with UsaMamo week prompts. I still have at least two(?) artworks to be posted, so stay tuned ^u^

Water Mill and Polka Dot Pals Raden from Whimsy Stamps

I have an epic project to share today and the main event is on YouTube as we’re having a Whimsy Stamps’ Slimline Dies Video Hop and your first stop on the hop is HERE. Neenah Desert Storm 80# Slimline Card Builder Die Water Mill Tree Swing Stone Path Polka Dot Pals Raden

The first thing I decided in making this card was the size and orientation – Slimline is the theme of the hop so I really only had to figure out portrait or landscape. I knew I wanted to mix DoveArt stamps with the Polka Dot Pals to create a scene so that’s where I started by selecting the background stamps. I could have picked a number of stamps to set up the background so I kept in mind of which character I was going to use and how they would all coordinate together.

Coloring on this started at the top and I worked my way down. I stamped and colored the background on Neenah Desert Storm 80# which adds a nice earthly feel to the project. It changes the colors a bit on how they look when compared to coloring on white so the background is less bright and more muted. That’s what I was going for.

The character, Polka Dot Pals Raden, was stamped and colored on Hammermill Premium Color 100# white paper. As you can see here how much brighter he looks. It’s a great way to add focus to the character while having a busy background scene. Coloring Polka Dot Pals Raden was really quick too because I kept the color blending simple and also used black ink to stamp with. I think he was colored in 12 minutes from start to finish.

Here’s the background that uses Water Mill, Tree Swing and Stone Path before I used the Slimline Card Builder Die on it. I had colored it on a larger size so I knew the whole area would be covered, but once it was finished, it was very hard to cut down.

One of the final touches was to add a scratch & sniff sticker that smelled like pine trees. I’ve had these for a while but didn’t have an opportunity to use them until now and the theme fit perfectly. So I wrote the words “scratch & sniff” on the card and placed the sticker. I bought some new smells too so I’m excited to use them more often.

These are refillable with corresponding inks and the tips are replaceable. This particular set is the skintone selection (E18 Copper, E15 Dark Suntan, E13 Light Suntan, E11 Barley Beige, E00 Skin White, R20 Blush). The palette is a warm assortment perfect for different skintones for illustrations. You can also use this for still-life and value sketches like I did on the right hand side. These markers bleed on the other side of the paper but the colors are vibrant and blendable. These markers have one of the best brush tips in the market. I have always dreamed of having these markers since I was a kid (due to their popularity in Manga illustrations). Here's a weird little doodle testing out the astrobright "stone" cardstock. The verdict is: not bad. Very smooth and I like how it takes markers. I think the black ink from my pentel brushpen is a little too much for it though. Craghide goralisk, unlikely cousin of the basalisk family. Six limbed heavy set behemoth analogous to earth gorillas. Studies have yet to ascertain whether the rocky hide of this beast is a dermal mineral deposit secreted from the skin or a method of fixing stone shards to the skin using a organic glue or resin. . . . I haven't used copics very much on white paper and I definitely prefer toned paper. You'll have to excuse my awful background as well it's something I definitely need to work on.
