Novel drafts! Please check them out!
Note: This is copied from my main blog's pinned post, so don't worry about plagiarism!
--
What’s up folks, I just reblogged one of my really old posts about trying to get people to read my novel drafts. But here’s a shiny new one so I can pin this to the front!
So I originally posted these works on Inkitt and Inkshares, but Inkitt is most likely a scam that is often described as “a shittier version of Wattpad.” Inkshares is POSSIBLY a scam, but also an extremely new and experimental website even if it wasn’t, so I decided to move these drafts to Wattpad in hopes that a more established website had more people to read them.
Moonflowers is in-progress and The Crocodile God is completed, but I’ll just let people know that both “Moonflowers” and “The Crocodile God” are built on a LOT of outdated knowledge where Tagalogs/Filipinos all had tattoos and that Mayari is a Tagalog goddess. In “The Crocodile God,” I draw from a lot of Maori/Pacific mythology as well, and I’m not sure if I should keep that aspect in there.
If these ever make it to Draft 2 stage, there’s gonna be a lot of changes.

MOONFLOWERS summary (current link https://www.wattpad.com/story/324856549-moonflowers ): When Alima Song's parents vanish for no reason, she eventually thinks that they're dead, so she moves from her home in California to the tourist town of Cloncarrig, Ireland to get away from her grief. Aside from issues with the Fair Folk, she gets to know some Malachy Bray and his friends, finds a job, a house, and adopts a stray dog.
Unknown to most people, the dog is Ned Song, her cursed but very much living father. He and her mother Lucy have not been killed--they "just" got kidnapped and cursed by the Wild Hunt, who are also the ones that keep trailing Alima after she moved.
The Irish gods do not enjoy thinking about why a whole gang of fairies are messing with the Song family, but since their leader is a force of nature, they'll have to start improvising their help.
--

THE CROCODILE GOD summary (current link https://www.wattpad.com/story/324254621-the-crocodile-god ) - If a god loses his community, his rituals, and most records of his existence, what is left of him to call divine?
On a windy beach in California, Mirasol finds a shipwrecked man and takes him to the hospital. With no phone, no ID, and barely any clothes after the sea got done with him, the most information they can get is that his name is Haik, and for lack of better options, he's discharged to Mirasol's place.
Dark-skinned, covered in tattoos, and hailing from Australia, Haik is not the typical Filipino. He tells her stories of the Tagalogs' far past, a foreign and unknown country--and soon finds out that he is Haik the sea-god, constantly searching for his mortal wife, and they are both stuck in a loop of reincarnation after their whale-goddess daughter was stillborn.
Unfortunately, she also finds out that he's an undocumented immigrant.
--
IF ANYTHING ABOUT THESE DRAFTS CAN PIQUE YOUR INTEREST, PLEASE DON’T HESITATE TO CHECK OUT THE DRAFTS AND LEAVE A COMMENT TO SHOW SUPPORT!!! I get so many people just saying my writing sounds cool EVERYWHERE ELSE BUT THE ACTUAL WEBSITE, and that’s not really getting my audience boost up.

Whilst I actually remember that I exist here, may I quickly catch you up on some News of various types?
1) the RomPod podcast episode that's got an interview with, er, me, and also the lovely romance scholar Maria Ramos-Garcia, is up now, if you want to hear me ramble about things! We're in episode 2, which you can find here.
2) if you're looking for a good cause to support this month, and some great short stories celebrating queer joy in all sorts of flavors, you might like to check out this anthology kickstarter from Amphibian Press - I've got a story in there! Something brand-new and shiny and exclusive to this collection! (I think we're not supposed to announce the full lineup yet, but there are some lovely author-friends in there too!) Proceeds are going to benefit Club Q!
3) this one’s probably the Big Thing - the Character Bleed box set - with the original three novels, plus new author’s note, and updated cover art - is coming June 10 from JMS Books! Ebook first, then paperback probably in about two months - yes, it’ll be massive! I really want to see it. It’s going to be...wait for it...332,890 words. (Good heavens, did I write that many words?!) It’s actually sort of experimental - JMS said they don’t normally do paperbacks for box sets, but this trilogy has been such a consistent good seller, they’d like to try at least a limited number in print. (So maybe please buy one when that happens? If nothing else you can probably use it as a hammer, or a doorstop, or a weapon.)
This is closer to the way I originally wrote it, as one giant novel - I broke it into a trilogy to, y'know, make it publishable! This volume includes the short stories that came with each book - including the ones that were never on AO3, at least one of those per book. The short stories published separately will get collected into a second volume! (I am STILL working on Leo’s book, which might have to be two books, because it is now 116k and NOT DONE *screams quietly into pillows about not being able to write short things*)
I don’t think the Amazon link is live yet but here’s the JMS Books link!
4) with the Academic Hat on, I am your Fantasy & the Fantastic Area Chair for the Pacific Ancient & Modern Language Association Conference! We've got several great proposals but should have room for 1-2 more - if you are working on some fantasy-adjacent research / creative work with meta-cognitive component, and you want to come to Portland in October, send me an abstract over here! Or, if you are in or near Portland, would you like to hang out, meet up, say hi? Or, any recommendations? I’ve been to Portland once before but also for Academic Conference Reasons, so not lots of tourist time. Awesome Husband might come this time because he’s never been to Portland and he’s got some vacation time. We like history, good craft beer, botanic gardens, water, queerness, and libraries. I think the conference hotel is some sort of Hilton in the downtown area?
5) officially got the rights back from Inkshares* for my first** novel, A Prophecy for Two! (Plus they sent me the last paperbacks they had in inventory, so a- those are I guess rare-ish now, since there'll never be another of those editions - want to buy one for cheap? *laughs* I mean I’m semi- serious; they sent me like 13 paperbacks, and I do not need that many! and b- I think that's it as far as that relationship! *dusts off hands*) Now to give the whole thing a polish and republish it with JMS - we've already had conversations about that, so it’ll happen!
*I’ve got complicated feels about Inkshares. That’s a whole other post. In the short form: did I get a book out of it, when I was an unknown author? Yes. Would I advise someone else to work with them? No.
**first in terms of being completed. A Demon for Midwinter ended up being published first, because of publisher schedules and JMS Books sending me a super-quick offer and having great editorial turnaround.
6) okay, I THINK that’s it! Actually, a totally non-publishing related thing: I just had a student submit - for a 12-page paper requirement - a paper that was 21 pages. Yep.
Honestly, it was kind of lovely - he’s a good student, he’s a good writer, and he already submitted a 14-page version that was excellent, but then he asked if he could send me an updated version “to make it as good as I possibly can,” and I said yes, because he *is* a very good writer, and then. A 21 page paper showed up in my email. Not including his Works Cited section, or the lengthy email in which he told me how much fun he had in my class and getting to write about monsters and monstrosity and ethics and agency. My god, student, I am both impressed and vaguely in shock. I mean, that’s why I do this job, that’s why I love this job, but also - he sent the updated version to me the *day* before final grades were due. (He already had an A.)

Shadow of the Eternal Watcher, par Josh Mendoza (Inkshares, janvier 2025)

Dommage.

Linda's Book Obsession Reviews "Henderson House" by Caren Simpson McCiver, Inkshares, August 1, 2023. On Tour with Suzy Approved Book Tours
“Henderson House” by Caren Simpson McVicker is an enchanting and delightful novel I highly recommend to other readers. Do you ever think that a house is speaking to you? This grandiose boarding house has all the “feels” of “home” and hosts a cast of quirky characters. This fictional novel has a feel of magical essence through color and emotions. The timeline for this story is set in the early…

WUPDATE: CALL ME ICARUS
Wednesday, Sept. 6th || Final Wupdate
I have some really good and really sad news y'all... this is the final wupdate for Call Me Icarus...
BUT that's only because it's done! it's being put up on shelves and I get to take a bit of a break!!! Enjoy this lil graphic about it:
What does this mean?? That means that CMI will be published soon! As y'all know, I had CMI up for pre-order on inkshares for a bit. However, I realized that Inkshares just wasn't the right fit for me. And thanks to y'all being so understanding, I was able to pull it from there and publish it on my own!
As of now, the final manuscript is with beta readers. They will make any last minute calls on it, and then I will be sending it over for publication!
I have is up for pre-order technically on Amazon, which you can find the link to Here. I am not focusing on pre-orders, as you can only set up E-Book preorders as of now. I really just have it there so that I can start making sure everything is in order!! I will still be posting a cover reveal once I have the cover in my hands, don't you guys worry!
Thank y'all for coming on this journey with me, and I cannot wait for you to meet my dysfunctional found family <3
I should also mention: I am going to be out of town starting today. For 5 days, I will not have access to any technology or internet while I am at Blue Ridge Rock Fest. That's part of why I am announcing this now, it takes a lot of pressure off my shoulders to not be able to see what happens with this post.
I also want to say that I am soso grateful to every single one of you who have followed this book from day one. We are so close to the finish line and I would not be here without all of you. You were there for every single bit of progress and every single misstep I made. I learned a lot through this process, and I know that going forward I will continue to bring y'all great stories involving Icarus and his ragtag team of queers <3

Let's get this going round again!! Happy pride!!!
I have a novel up for pre-order right now! If you've heard of me, you've heard of Call Me Icarus, but just in case imma talk about it
Call me Icarus is a grimdark tragedy following Icarus as he takes a look behind the curtain of the Elysian Program and sees the disgusting framework that he was disillusioned to. Now the only thing on his mind is bringing down the program and the entire ATLAS corporation. Will he be able to when the world seems set against him?
The Elysians are here to protect us. They uphold order, they keep citizens safe… unless you are their kid. When you are the child of an Elysian you get to see what they are truly like. You get to see their fears, their anger, their hatred. You get to be subjected to their wants and whims. Most importantly, you get to be trained by the ‘best of the best’ to become an Elysian yourself. At least that’s what we were told. We weren’t told what that training would cost us. What it would do to our bodies and our minds. How it would make us into what the Elysians really are, mindless abominations. These monsters are in every corner of our society. They are heralded as Gods among men, but not for long. I am doing everything in my power to show who they really are behind their masks. Soon, everyone will see these nasty creatures for what they are…
Right now I have the first two chapters of the book up and available to read on Inkshares, where you can also pre-order it! It's also currently the only place where I have released the actual book name and temporary book cover!
I wanna help get LGBTQ indie writers paid this month so let's start a thread! If you've got a piece of writing (be it a novel, a collection, a book of poetry, a short story, erotica, whatever!) for sale online or in bookstores that u would love for more people to read, HERES YOUR SIGN to reblog this with links to your work <3

Guys I'm being an idiot
New idea
I have a new and much better idea: some people have said they can't afford to pre-order (since the ebook still costs $10) and therefore can't support the project even though they would like to.
I just thought of something though, if you can't afford to pre-order in the near future: you can still
Make an account on Inkshares dot com
Click "follow": not on my profile, but on the project specifically.
That way at least if push comes to shove, if there is debate about the book's actual interest level (interest is what the publisher is trying to guage) i will still have a lot of proof that people are interested.
I hope this works and nobody has to feel bad about not having enough money! That's the last thing I want and part of why I've been feeling like a pest.
If you can afford to preorder great! The website has shown they will count [at least?] 3 copies per person toward the total goal. If not you can still help!

How I Am Crowdfunding The Kingdom of Heaven (Book)
On September 1, I will open pre-orders for The Kingdom of Heaven on Inkshares, a crowdfunding site for hybrid publishing.
What is Inkshares?
Inkshares offers equal-opportunity publishing assistance, conditionally. Anyone who can generate enough interest for their book will have it published by Inkshares at no upfront cost.
The book would get a professional editor, a well-connected marketing team for marketing assistance, a cover, distribution, as well as the Inkshares imprint.
How does funding work on Inkshares?
Simply: I must set myself a funding deadline, and then reach a set number of pre-orders of the book before that deadline. Once the minimum number of pre-orders are reached, the book will be taken to press as quickly as possible.
The pre-order goal (set by Inkshares, not me) is 750. Once Inkshares is absolutely sure the book will sell at least 750 copies, it can go to press.
In order to be absolutely sure this will happen, I need pre-orders. This necessitates making an account on Inkshares and pre-order a copy of the book. (Note: This means that 750 people have to order 1 copy. Multiples are considered cheating; one person cannot order 750 copies in order to get the book to press. If your friends or family want a copy, encourage them to order it themselves.)
What happens if the goal is not reached?
Inkshares will refund everyone and I will move toward self-publishing the book outright.
How long do you have?
I think I can reach this goal in 8 months. However, that is ambitious, since it requires me to sell almost 90 pre-orders a month or 22 per week or 3 per day.
This will be much less daunting if I can start with a burst of energy! It lowers the amount of grinding I will have to do later on in the campaign. Especially since a strong start will help me get pre-orders from within the Inkshares community itself, taking off some of the pressure. That is why it's extremely important for you to put September 1 on your calendar as the date to pre-order The Kingdom of Heaven.
How Much Does it Cost?
My understanding is that a pre-order for a paperback on Inkshares is $15.99 and an ebook pre-order is $10.00.
