English is a nightmare: outlier looks like it should be french but it actually is just an old timey contraction of out and lie. Conversely inlier is technically a word but I've never heard anyone actually use it.
huh, that's interesting, ty!

Textual Novelty Detection
📢 Exciting News! Check out this latest blog post on Textual Novelty Detection! 📚✨ In today’s world flooded with news articles, it's crucial to distinguish between new information and redundant content. The article explores how the Minimum Covariance Determinant (MCD) method can be used to detect novelty in news headlines. By applying MCD, we can identify if an article contains new information not available elsewhere. The post provides a step-by-step approach to implementing MCD for novelty detection, including text embedding, computing MCD, fitting an elliptic envelope, and predicting novel sentences. Visualizations are also included to showcase the results. 🔗 Read the full article here: https://ift.tt/rucGj63 Understanding novel data can greatly influence decision-making, and this technique helps distinguish between significant news and repetitive content. The MCD method estimates the covariance matrix of a dataset, forming an elliptical shape that represents the central mode of a Gaussian distribution. Any data points outside this shape are considered novelties or anomalies. The MCD method is particularly useful when dealing with noisy or outlier-laden datasets, allowing us to identify unusual data points that deviate from the overall pattern. For news headlines, MCD can model "normal" headlines based on covariance and then assess new headlines based on their deviation from the norm. The article explains the process, starting with transforming text data into numerical representations using text embedding. These representations capture the meaning of the text, enabling operations such as finding similar text or clustering based on semantic meaning. Next, the MCD method is applied to estimate the central data cloud and fit an elliptic envelope around it. This envelope acts as a boundary to separate normal headlines from novel ones. By predicting the labels of the headlines and looking at outliers, we can identify the novel ones. To ensure clarity, the article employs visualizations, plotting the embeddings in a 2D space using Principal Component Analysis (PCA), and showcasing the elliptic envelope along with inliers (normal headlines) and outliers (novel headlines). It's worth noting that adjusting parameters like the decision boundary threshold and contamination parameter can influence the outcome of the MCD method, tailoring it to specific use cases. Remember, incorporating the temporal aspect of news articles is crucial for accurate novelty detection. This requires considering the time of publication and accounting for changes in topics or sentiments over time. However, exploring the temporal aspect goes beyond the scope of this article. Overall, the combination of the MCD method and text embedding is a powerful tool for detecting novelty in news headlines. It enables us to identify articles with new information and make informed decisions based on the most up-to-date data. Take a look at the article to gain valuable insights into detecting textual novelty: https://ift.tt/rucGj63 Feel free to comment or share your thoughts on the topic. Scripted Violence (Bim Trimmer X Reader)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
((AH! I’m alive! Anyway I had to do some research on how Bim acts also I'm just sorta lazy but I'm tryin’ y'all I promise  but here we go as promise @saltines-and-tea
@justwritingscibbles any thoughts Mama Scribs?))
You had known the adorkable show host for many Years now and you had never once seen him get angry. Upset, sure everyone does. Sad, you bet he had had many a rough nights curled up in your safe embrace as you soothed his troubled mind. Happy, almost on a day to day basis. Stress, he worked in the Entertainment Industry of course he got stressed. Sick, not really a mood but you had been at his house until he was well once more waiting on him hand and foot. But angry…true, genuine anger…never. Not once. Bim was a lovely creature who seemed to lack the anger response in any situation that would normally have anyone else ready to punch someone square in the face. It was amazing and honestly a bit impressive if you were being totally honest with yourself; he was able to keep his head and stay calm no matter what life threw at him.
     Until today.
Today was like most days, the same boring thing after another when it came to work. As usual you decided to stay a bit after, much after, to help clean up and just hang around the other Alters you had learned to love over your time at this job. Sure there were times when things got weird, when there was a dead body or one was covered in blood for reasons unknown to you, and there had been the occasional argument which caused tension between you and another but over all they were like your family. Just…a really messed up and seriously strange one at that though you would never complain.
Having just finished cleaning up the last of the paper work from one of the many messy offices in the building you made your way down the hall to the main recording room. Wilford and Bim usually had this room split between the two although the Jim twins would take over from time to time to see which group of Egos had claimed the space as theirs for the time. Opening the large door you made your way inside to see a rather usual set of faces and one new one. Bim sat on the stage with Wilford laughing and chatting while Google chatted with someone you felt you knew but had never seen before. He had this odd smug air about him that you weren’t sure anyone of the Ipliers could have, in this amount anyway Dark was known to get extremely smug at times as well as Google though he was harder to read. Not noticing Bim had locked his eyes on you the moment you opened the door, much like every other time he saw you, you gave Google a little wave as you made eye contact with the Robot gaining a nod in return. Both of you looked to the Male he was once holding a conversation with that was now making his way towards you.
“Hello there lovely.” He smiled offering his hand to you, “I don’t believe we’ve had the pleasure of meeting yet. Such a shame, one is missing out on a glorious creature such as yourself.”
Taking his hand you blushed at both his words and the gentle kiss he placed to your knuckles. He sure seemed to be full of himself yet there was an odd charm to him as well. “I-I’m (Name). I work…well pretty much everywhere in this place now honestly.” You laughed trying to hide your awkwardness behind it hoping you didn’t just make an ass of yourself.
“That must be true. Only someone as radiant as you would be able to make this group of mismatched entities work as one unit while making the environment around us full of so much love and joy~.” The other purred gently as he held eye contact with you the entire time he spoke, his words seeming to flow effortlessly from his lips.
“W-well I wouldn’t say that- they all do their part to help this place stay in one piece. Besides Dark is the one who’s in control of the businesses really I just try to make everything flow a bit easier.” You found yourself stammering unable to keep the Butterflies in your stomach in their cage.
Chuckling he shook his head still having not let go of your hand, “Oh and what a wondrous job you’re doing my dear little Lamb~. Why without your smile alone I believe this place would put Darks Guyliner to shame!” He joked smirking as you laughed at his words. He seemed to be quite the charmer as well; quite the smooth talker it seemed.
Unbeknownst to you Bim was boiling with anger as he watched his dear, sweet Angel play right into the hands of Author. Hands balled into fists so tight his knuckles were turning White Bim grit his teeth as he attempted to hold it all in in an attempt to keep from marching right over there and punch that Book loving prick in the jaw.
“My good man if I didn’t know any better I’d say you were getting angry~.” Wilford noted with a twitch of his excellently kept Mustache loving a good bit of mischief between the others, “Tell ol’ Warfy what’s troubling you.”
“Author.” Bim growled as he shifted, his entire body tense and practically vibrating with rage, “That walking God Complex of an Alter is using his words on her. He’s wooing her. My poor, sweet Angel has no idea what that monster is like- she’s to loving to think anything bad of anyone how could she!”
“Oh~?” the Actor slowly grinned his eyes glowing a faint Pink with a sort of impish delight, “Well it does seem he’s got her wrapped around his finger doesn’t it old chum? He might even talk her into leaving with him…who knows~. Your little Angel just might find herself in his arms tonight all alone with him in his room if they’re not careful, wouldn’t you agree~?”
That last sentence was what did it for him.
The thought of you being used by that egotistical asshole.
The thought of you being in Authors arms all night letting him do what ever he could talk you into, which knowing that one was anything his twisted mind could come up with, like a puppet when Bim would never do that to you made him snap.
Jumping to his feet the normally calm Alter ripped off his Suit Jacket and practically hurled it on the ground unable to find a care in the world for its well being as he rolled up his shirts sleeves. Growling as he saw you all cute and flustered while Author slipped an arm around your hips Bim wasted no time with shoving him off.
“Bim what are you doing-“ you tried to question as he immediately got in-between the Two of you and into Authors space, practically nose to nose with him.
“And just what is it you think you’re doing with (Name) Author?” Bim growled in a tone you had only thought Dark could produce, “You don’t have the right to waltz in here and and start using your ability against her, I would never do something like that!”
Author simply laughed finding the clearly weaker mans attempt to scare him pathetic at best, “Ability? What ability do you have? The power to be a wimp who’s so madly in love with someone you cant even bring yourself to talk coherently around? You’re nothing more than a pathetic puppy looking for a home that isn’t there Bim! Always whining and pawing for attention when she clearly isn’t interested. Why would (Name) ever want to be with a worm like you?”
Seeing someone speak to Bim, the sweetest being on the face of the Earth who would never so much as speak ill about someone, in such a manner almost had you between them and telling the guy off; but you didn’t have the time. One moment you were ready to tear Author a new one when Bim, Bim Game Show Host Trimmer, punched him dead in the face. To shocked to even breath you watched as Author rubbed his nose with the back of his hand looking genuinely shocked when he spotted Blood smeared across his skin. “I am not playing around Author! You can say and write what you will about me but I will NEVER let you harm (Name!)” Bim snapped clearly ready to harm him again when Dr.Iplier, as if knowing someone was harmed, rushed into the room spouting nonsense to an invisible Nurse as he looked over Author who was now far to busy with answering and swatting the Doctors hands away to tackle Bim.
Watching Dr.Iplier all but drag the other away you walked up to Bim hesitantly after retrieving his Jacket, “You dropped this.” You spoke gently as you handed it back to the now flustered Bim.
“I-I’m terribly sorry (Name) I-I don’t know what came over me just seeing him using his words against you- on you- making you blush like that-“ Bim tried to explain but found himself so much less inclined to explanations than the other Egos he almost began to panic.
Smiling warmly you leaned up placing a gentle, tender kiss to his cheek that was soon a bright shade of Scarlet, “My place at around Eight tomorrow? I’ll make us some dinner and you bring the Movie?” You giggled warmly as you watched the other male only able to nod in agreement.
“I’ll see you then my sweet Knight in Shining Armor.” Giggling you turned and made your way out of the building sending Jackaboyman a quick text asking for help with picking an outfit for your date.
Placing a hand over where your lips had briefly met his cheek Bim stumbled back a bit as his Heart tried to remember how to beat. Hearing a hearty laugh and a hand grip his far shoulder Wilford lead the love shocked Bim out of the room knowing if he didn’t get him home the poor thing would stand there all night.
“See bro, I told’a so!” Bing laughed as he snatched the Twenty Dollars from an annoyed Google as he skated into the room, around the Robot in Glasses, then out the door.
“Well I suppose you must be right sometimes.” Google replied as he turned and swiftly left the room to find Dark and continue to talk about their…business propositions together.

(Dr. Atlas above)
Radical Misinformation
Dr. Atlas is a radiologist and coronavirus advisor to the Trump administration. Atlas has a reputation of spreading misinformation and fighting with Dr. Fauci, the nation's top infectious disease expert.
Over the weekend, on Saturday, Atlas made a shameful appearance on RT, which is Russia's American branch of their state controlled media Russia Today. RT is actual registered as a foreign agent. That means that they admit to being an organization that intentionally attempts to manipulate the views of Americans for the interests of Russia. Dr. Atlas has already released an apology for doing the interview with RT. He claims he did not know they were a state sponsored media. That may or may not be true, RT is a fairly well known Russian agent.
Despite his apology, what is even more shameful is the content he brought to the interview. Atlas seriously down played the on going pandemic. He went as far as to say that lockdowns will go down in history as a massive policy failure and that mask wearing is making kids neurotic. On a separate occasion, Atlas said he was proud to be an outlier concerning opinions on the pandemic, calling the inliers "completely wrong."
This took place while Trump floats the idea that he will fire Dr. Fauci after election day this weekend. Trump has regularly fought against Dr. Fauci's expert opinion concerning the pandemic and preventive measures. Trump has even gone as far to call Dr. Fauci an idiot.
In the backdrop of all this, Trump is losing votes of the elderly and other groups specifically for his poor handling and radical claims about the pandemic. Elderly voters hear Trump's denial, but see the rising deaths. This has had a serious impact on voting so far.
These events over the weekend are another important example of the dangerous authoritarian ideology that stresses loyalty the President's opinion regardless of the truth. Please, vote Trump out!

Three’s A Crowd (Dark X Reader X Anti)

I’M SORRY I TOOK SO LONG FORGIVE ME!
@paisleylarae : I really really adore your writing so far! I was wondering if it was possible to request a Darkiplier x Reader x Antisepticeye? What I was thinking was a Stockholm Syndrome scenario with Dark but Anti tries to come to the rescue, or vice versa?? Please and thank you if possible!

This has been going on for some time now. You had been happy and safe with your beloved, but once his enemy grew in power and rank throughout The Void your life was put into terrible danger. He had enemies, yes, but none were as powerful or as feared as Darkiplier. This shadow being was one of the most powerful Alter Egos there was in creation so to say that you were in danger to be honest was an understatement at best.
It was only a matter of time before something had come up when dating your glitchy green Alter bean, though you hadn’t expected it to turn out like this. Not like this at all. One moment you were at home, happy and safe, snuggled up in your lovers shirt just enjoying a nice show before everything turned Monochrome. All color around you bled out of existence until there was nothing bright at all; even the lights seemed to be afraid of shining as the air turned to ice. Standing from your spot on the couch you took a few steps back unsure what was happening but just as you turned to get out of the room you ran straight into a suit. Looking up at the being before you the last thing you saw was his cold glare.
Waking up in a room strapped to what looked like a Dentist chair with blinding lights above you. Groaning while shifting your gaze to the room around you your heart all but stopped. Everything was an awful dull color except for the obvious blood stains covering parts of the chair, the floor, the walls, everything. The ground under you was grated, lifting you up slightly from the cool tile floor, while there were tables with things you couldn’t quite make out on them due to your laying position but you knew it would bring you nothing good. Turning your head to the left you saw a door that seemed to be one that would be placed inside a mental institute; thick metal with a small square window obviously made for keeping someone in.
     No…
     Not here.
     Anywhere but here!
Panic sweeping through your veins you began to twist and turn as you violently struggled to get out of your thick, leather restraints. You had heard of this room, Anti had explained to you that this was Darks play room that went by the name ‘The Persuasion Room’ although persuading wasn’t exactly what he was doing in there, and you knew that should someone be in this room it wouldn’t end well for those in the chair. Well Anti had made many a joke of Dark using it as some sort of kinky place should he ever have a partner but mostly it was for torture.
Why were you here? You hadn’t done anything! Doing everything you could to not break down in tears you froze as the heavy door creaked open revealing the owner of the room. The hall beyond the door was dark, so dark you couldn’t really make anything out, it was amazing that Dark was visible at all. Watching him calmly make his way over to you as the door shut slowly behind him the being didn’t even look at you. Not so much as a glance. Instead the demon walked over to a table slowly gazing over his toys.
“You don’t know why you’re here. That’s understandable. We’ve never met after all, and you must forgive me for my rudeness this is after all a terrible first impression, but you must understand my control over this realm is being…challenged.” Dark growled low the last word causing his shell to crack; one of him stood still glaring down at the tools before him as the other roared in anger, “I do not like being challenged. So…I am in the position where I must, yet again, remind that nat who’s in charge here.”
You wanted to say so many things: scream, curse, yell anything you could at him but your instincts held you back and kept you silent. The primal portion of your brain knowing a great threat when it saw one. Watching in complete terror as he removed his coat and hung it on a hook before rolling up his sleeves you then knew this was going to be exactly what you feared it would be.
“Now my dear (Name)…know that this had nothing to do with you. Well not the reason this is happening anyway.” Dark explained as he walked over with two objects in one hand and a leather belt in the other. Forcing the belt between your teeth he looked down into your wide, fearful eyes with a dull and almost bored expression while he pressed the cool ends to your temples, “Now…seeing as how you’re dating that annoying little electrical problem you must be use to shocks. How about we test your tolerance shall we my dear~?”
It was the oddest thing to hear a purr like that come from such a threat, but you didn’t get to dwell on it for to long before your body jerked up as a strong current ripped through every cell in your body.
Days turned into weeks and weeks turned into months before you were shown any sort of color but the dull world splattered with red. Dark had explained his plan to you throughout the torment and the basic plan was to turn you against him. Take the one thing Anti loved most away from him and make it love Dark. You. Dark knew taking your love from where it belonged and forcing it on him to make you loyal and afraid of turning away from him would tear the other demon apart inside.      And he was right.      The moment Anti had found out what had happened he went ballistic. Tearing apart any and everything e could get his hands on, killing anyone that couldn’t tell him what he wanted to know, threatening everything that moved. But when one of Darks little worms had told him what Dark had done to you, oh he had lost it. Tearing the being apart he couldn’t control himself anymore! Just the thought of his sweet little angel being hurt and forced to love that monster- His true rage was shown when you were taken from him and nothing was going to calm the raging sea that was his mind until he had you back.      It took some time but he found you. He finally found you! Not even knocking Anti got inside through the wires and looked around. Dull. Boring colors much like that monster. Looking around his eyes scanned the rooms as he trailed through out the large home before they fell on you. His once bright and lively little kitten was now dull and…scared. Lord above you looked so scared. Dark was going to pay for this!      “Love.” He called gently not wanting to scare you unsure just how far that bastard had gone in his torments, “It’s me. Common let’s get ya outta here an’ back home yea?” Anti cooed gently as he cautiously approached.      Snapping your gaze to the other demon you shook your head, “No I-I can’t go…I can’t go with you!” You explained beginning to grow afraid what would happen should Dark come home and find him here.      “You need to go! Dark’s going to be home soon and he won’t like you being here!”      Growling slightly as he glitches he wanted to snap at you but bit back his words, “Kitten…he’s hurtin’ ye. Ye know this ain’t where ya belong.” Anti tried to coo gently to you to sooth the growing fear he saw in your eyes.      “No!” You snapped at him about to continue before that damn static started once more, “…h-honey…you’re home.”      No. No you didn’t call anyone honey but him! Turning with an angry snarl he glared at the other demon his eyes growing as black as his suit, “D́a̵̦͙r͕̺͚͖̠k͎.̰.̸.̠̙͔̫”      “Anti.” Dark stated calm as ever as he made his way past the glitching demon and to you. Gently cupping your cheek as he kissed you he smirked at the glare the other demon made at the show of affection.      It broke his heart to see you like this. Broken and under his thumb. Anti would take you away from here no matter the cost and you’d be happy! You’d be happy and safe and he was never going to let anyone hurt you ever again! Anyone who tried would never bee seen again…      “G҉͖ę̭̱͔͎͚̪̲t͔ t̲͍͖͔̱̞h̻̩̹̙̟́e̱̤̱̭͟ ̮͙f͠o̹̖̜̬̤͇ok͈̼̦̲̹͇ ͚͖̫̯ͅa̢̤̠̟̠w̯̟͓͚̥aý̰͓͉̞̪ ̞̘̱̩̖̫̬f̨͚͇rͅo͈͇̩͇̕ͅm̳̻̞͚ ̜͙(̛Na̮͟ḿ͎e̶̥)̷̬̟̲̖̠!͓͔͘” Anti roared tensing to stop himself from rushing him. Rushing you. Glitching violently as he watched Dark turn to look at him he hissed barring his fangs, “Leave them outta this! Yer beef is with me not them! Ye had n̺͚̹͓͟o͈̯͉̩̪̣̫ ̞d͕̱̠̝̱a̢̞͕ͅm̶̦̙͎͉͕ͅn͍ ̡̜̻͇͙̭͙̞r̞̱͕̥̻ͅi̴g̷̬͎͎̬̹h͇̦t͈͙͈͍͔͔-̜̪!͙̗̰̻̟͍”      Screaming as you were shoved back you fell on your ass as the two went at each other attempting to rip the others guts out. Knives slashing, claws swiping, punches were thrown, kicks, bites, glitches and shadows every trick in the book was used. It was awe inspiring though also down right terrifying.      They truly were monsters…      Shrinking back into the corner as you watched them battle it out you weren’t sure what you were expecting. Normally in this situation Dark would somehow end up as top dog and Anti would make a remark and leave before he was done in, but this time…this time was different. Unlike before with it just being some bored little squabble this time Anti had something to right for. He had you. You were his hole reason to even stick around, his everything, and when you were taken from him he feared the worst. He was so scared…scared you had been killed. Anti had never felt so powerless before.      The battle ended with Anti stabbing Dark in the chest repeatedly until the slightly taller of the two went down coughing up the black ooze that seeped out of his wounds. Tossing his knife aside Anti made his way to you fully expecting you to scream or beg not to be hurt but…you didn’t.      “I wanna go home!” You begged in a broken whimper as tears welled up in your eyes. Clinging to Anti as you sobbed he held you bridal style humming you a little Irish tune as he took you out of that hell hole.      “This isn’t over.” Dark growled his shell cracking so much you couldn’t tell which was even him anymore.
Getting back home he cleaned you up and took the best care of you he knew how, hell he even called The Good Doctor to get his advice, before he even thought about taking care of himself. Holding you he nuzzled the hell out of you cuddling and muttering the sweetest nothings you didn’t even know he knew how to describe, he’d have to thank Chase later, but you didn’t care. You didn’t care what he said you were home and with him. You were safe.      “I love ye (Name). I’m so sorry…I shoulda been there. Don’t worry love, I’ll be there from now on. I promise.” He assured in a gentle hushed tone as he kissed your forehead as you drifted off to sleep feeling safe and warm for the first time in a very long time.      You were home.

but you can’t trust Wikipedia (w8)
This week we looked at truth in regard to knowledge sharing on Wikipedia, and how the infrastructure of a program limits its capacity to subvert ideas of objectivity.
Reading
Ford, H and Wajcman, J. 2017. ‘Anyone can edit’, not everyone does: Wikipedia’s infrastructure and the gender gap. Social Studies of Science, 47(4). pp. 511-527.
Wikipedia’s inclusivity, while claiming to be "universal" and "inclusive", is limited by its foundations. The infrastructure is based upon two formats developed in an epistemologically masculine way (the free software movement and the Western encyclopaedia). I would question how valid an online encyclopaedia is as a platform for knowledge sharing, given the information is only presented to those who ask for it. Wikipedia can surely only challenge the norms of encyclopaedic knowledge sharing if it subverts them.
If we consider the issue to be a lack of representation on Wikipedia of (a) female contributors and (b) female history (i.e. scientists who are women); people are using Wikipedia to find out about a topic which they are already aware of and want to know more about. Are people aware of female contributions to history and science? Are school curriculums prompting students to search for (e.g.) female scientists? Prompting questions aside, Wikipedia's verifiability rule of only referencing existing reputable sources mean the prejudiced and limiting structures of publishers are inherent in the inclusion (or exclusion) of information on Wikipedia.
This paper suggests Wikipedia’s infrastructure is to blame for the editing gender gap, more so than women’s lack of confidence or desire to avoid conflict. Concurring with the paper, I think the structure and purpose of Wikipedia is flawed to a degree where it needs to be overhauled entirely to "re-balance" the editing gap. The online encyclopaedia itself is locked into its own form too much for any rule-following disruption (i.e. female editors increasing representation) to challenge the masculine epistemology of the site.
Task
I was hesitant starting this task. I don't consider myself an expert, certainly not in any "objective" presentation of any idea or person or place. I don’t identify with Wikipedia’s policy of presenting knowledge as objective, and I think this perspective exists as part of a world of histories and sciences constructed and populated by men.
I found myself asking the following questions: Is knowledge important to me? Do I think putting information on Wikipedia constitutes knowledge sharing? If there is knowledge that I think should be shared, is it the kind of knowledge that is verifiable and therefore could ever be recorded on Wikipedia? Do I care about the wrong things? Am I, realistically, doing anything to share knowledge about the things I do think people should know about? This thought spiral gave me respect for the people around the world who are dedicating time to adding information to Wikipedia pages, especially women doing so despite the emotional labour involved (referring to page 6 of reading).
Having recently discovered the practice of self-compassion, and the work of Dr Kristin Neff in researching self-compassion, I edited the 'Self-compassion' Wikipedia entry. Practical questions I asked myself once I had determined some information to add to a relevant topic: is this important? Which page should it be added to? Which part of the page should it be added to? How much of this information is valuable, and therefore how much should be included? I skimmed through the page to see the current contents and added a single benefit of self-compassion. You can see my edit in the screenshot below:
Tumblr media
A day later, the edit was removed because a full citation was needed, and the DOI I had supplied was not enough. I don’t feel especially attached to the edit I made and feel that was reflected in my negligence in providing the full citation. I don’t know if I will go back and add the citation, it seems tedious and I’m not convinced my edit will make any difference. I wonder how many first time Wikipedia editors, especially women, experience this malaise with the site’s formalities and give up.
Ultimately, while I did this task for the sake of reflection in this blog post, I found the process eye-opening and challenging. Both reading the article and going through the mental process of preparing myself to edit, challenged me to ask why I haven't considered this important before. I really enjoy sharing things I've learned with people I know and care about, but the benefits of my knowledge sharing are capped. I now think of editing Wikipedia (as a woman) as an act of feminist defiance, regardless of the topic I am contributing to. I have also been prompted to consider what other platforms may be more suitable for the kinds of knowledge sharing I want to be a part of.
Project - Stranger Visions
This project raises questions about objectivity and truth. Due to the nature of science, especially in line with the arguments presented in the reading (which implied the objectivity of science is a perspective developed in a male-dominated science world), data is often discussed in a factual, detached way.
DNA is often used to assuage doubt and uncertainty, designed to be a conclusive answer without the flaws of human subjectivity. Alternatively, criminal profiling is drenched in human subjectivity. Stranger Visions' exploration of this dichotomy, questioning how "solved" something like racial profiling can be where DNA profiling software is used instead, challenges the objective nature of science. In the case of the profiling software, conclusions can only be as accurate as the data the software is built upon. How can it be ensured that the algorithm which determines profiles is accurate? I wonder, like the artist, if using this software will only deepen patterns of racial profiling.
It makes me feel uncomfortable to think that increasingly processes which govern us, which protect us and discipline us, are ruled by data. So often data is talked about as if it can be objective, yet the process of collecting data, of even defining which data to collect and which to exclude, is by necessity subjective. When a program is made by a human, it inherits the subjectivity of the human, becoming set in some way in line with the limited perspectives held by the programmer.
Having read the article which begins to "ask the science question in feminism" I feel disconcerted by the leaps being made to include women in STEM, and I feel afraid that inclusion of outliers is not enough to challenge the inliers who made the rules in the first place.
