a long Antasma analysis and why I think he's misunderstood as a villain

about time i made this one ngl. took me long enough but looking into DT more really gives me a different prespective on Antasma .

i'll be first of all going with what we know based on what the Pi'illos and pi'illoper say (cuz basic informations)

based on what the Pi'illos said:

simply the basics. he was a normal bat, ate a Pi'illo's nightmare once, turned into a monster motivated (possibly) by hunger for that . eventually laid his eyes on the dark stone. started a WAR after stealing it. lost the war and got sealing away by the Zeekeeper into the dream world. but before he did, he shattered the Dark stone. its bits petrified everyone on the island . making this a fight where nobody won.

now what Pi'illoper wrote in his books:

basically Pi'illoper sliiiightly gave more details but , still more into the pi'illos pov .

so not much is added aside from calling Antasma a mage king of bats and adding this slight assumption that it's possible that Antasma ,possibly, isn't actually ORIGINALLY from pi'illo insland

(but again the pi'illoper isn't a reliable source much in that matter but yk had to add it .)

So regardless , in both takes , Antasma is hungry for both power and dreams .

now aside from these facts, i'll go right into the interactions with the rest of the characters (and why i think people maaaaaaybe looking into his motives and all a bit from a wrong direction)

first of all his interactions with the Mario Bros:

now not ONCE did Antasma bat an eye on the bros specifically. he was always interacting only with bowser and DREAMBERT. he's ALWAYS adressing dreambert.

the only time he adressed the bros was as "these creatures" . he doesn't care about them at all, he doesn't see them much as a threat seemingly, or even as equals. he's merely focused on Dreambert and Dreambert ALONE .

so, he's so arrogant and full of himself . he thinks they are NOT on his level .

now, with Dreambert:

it's obvious how much rivalry and bitterness he holds against Dreambert yk? he only adresses HIM he only has a grudge against HIM (for now . before Bowser's betrayal). but even so he still has that bit of arogance and pride regardless

especially when he gets apparently stronger by the end of the game . he's deadpan like "if you even DARE i will hand you pillow butt back at you " . (and he did lol)

nooooooow then next part is

Antasma's dynamic with bowser and why i think he did not give two dangs about him from the starts aside from his power and dream energy.

from the START of their interactions , Antasma made it so clear that he only wants Bowser on his side because:

1- he's stronger than Peach (both brawn wise and dream energy wise) also gotta stop here for a sec cuz i do wonder how it would've been like if he kept on with kidnaping Peach instead but oh well.

2- he is evil. he will cooperate better if treated right into the situation.

as the game goes on we get MORE hints that Antasma isn't much of a loyal dude himself but he DOES demands loyalty from others .

how he's OBVIOUSLY not very loyal and totally plotting something :

ok THIS part specifically, to almost everyone in the fandom, interepts it differently which is ok and very understandable!

but the way i see it is that Antasma is clearly LYING about sharing his powers. because he really went "i wish to conquer THE WORLD" but IMMIDEATLY changed that wording to "i wish i can do whatever i want actualluy! just fly around you know!"

but like, sure , do anything he wants , which still can imply yeeting Bowser aside ANYWAYS when he doesn't need him anymore , because by that time antasma is free to do whatever, correct?

ANOTHER hint to why i believe doesnt bat an eye about Bowser aside from the benefits (get it? bat an eye? cuz he's a bat king-)

is this scene specifically:

it might not sound much but it sorta is . basically right before that Bowser suggests taking that dream energy from his minions instead but Antasma is like "mmmmm no you're more evil and stronger idc"

so another trait Antasma has is that he's glutton . as HELL. both for power and Dreams .

you know what that reminds me of? Parasites. in which, parasites pick a specific host and just takes whatever benefits and gives nothing in return . because based on everything before that he's clearly using that "ah yea sure WE- of course we. you're there of course." excuse just as a big lie. he aint sharing any of that power he gets.

When the betrayal happens later on, Antasma is obviously as surprised as everyone else . Not because he's like loyal to Bowser or anything but either becausehe betrayed him FIRST or because he expects his pawn to be loyal to him anyways .(Cuz as I said before, Antasma is Arrogant and very prideful .)

The one take I see from most of the fandom is that in that moment he reconsidered NOT betraying Bowser and actually keeping the alliance which . .. would be possible but we get no hints to that really other than, what I said before, subtle hints that Antasma is simply manipulative towards the koopa king.

Sooooo lemme conclude all this long essay :

1-antasma IS evil . Very evil.

2-he's very prideful and arrogant .

3-he has this hunger for power and dream energy.

4-he sounds veeeery manipulative through all of his screentime.

5-geniunely has this parasitic behavior

6-he would take everyone down with him if he's not winning. Not because he's desperate but because he believes nobody is on the same level as himself .

7-he doesn't give a darn about the bros but still used Luigi's dreams to escape to the real world (idk might be cuz Weegee is a perfect dream host if that made sense)

8-he doesn't get much screentime but when he does there's a lot going on but I wish it was explored better .

But again this is just my pov of it!anyone can have a different take I suppose

Anyways im playing totk and i was gonna do a sidequest to save a guy's friends in a canyon, but then i started finding these statues but they didnt do anything when i put anything in it. Then i found a hidden yiga clan sidequest and that was what the statues were for. So i went to the sky to travel to the other side of the canyon faster and accidently found the solution to a quest i was stuck on while going to a shrine in the sky insland so then i kept doing the quest and found a bunch of hidden things, then i accidently found another sidequest that i quiclly did and finally i found the last bit to the yiga quest and im going back to it now and then i tealise that all i wanted to do two hours ago i juust completely forgot about XD

And ive only stayed in the canyon the whole time

Ever thought about how the "gods of gold" in Midas cave prove the existence of other alive gods? You can make offerings, they can judge said offering and give you an appropriate reward. So here's my theory, Shamura killed the gods but didn't destroy the crowns, they just took them elsewhere and masked said disappearence of crowns with the exuse of having destroyed them, Plimbo (and the entirety of Smugglers Sanctuary) and the lighthouse prove the fact that there are other lands, since we known thanks to the Pilgrim Pack DLC that the Lands of the Old Faith are just one insland. So the crowns of the Old Gods still exist, but said gods are so far away that they wouldn't pose a treath to the Bishops (and the Lamb)

Also this means that tecnically the Lamb isn't the last of their kind, they're just the last lamb here

Oh, and Haro? No one knows wheter he actually went out of these lands (Or if the existence of other lands is known), so what he says might as well be toyal bs.

EDIT: Ok so one comment made me realize this teensy tiny hole in my theory, why the seasons stopped changing: And my fix to this is...

It got destroyed. Not by any of the Old Faith but by another god who dindn't know about the "New lands option" i don't think every crown made it safe and sound till the end (hope it makes sense)

Basically since Haro (I think we can trust him on this one) said there were hundreds of crowns, the reason of the war was purely territorial (More land= more followers= more devotion= more power), i think there were way too many gods in one place and the peace was so thin and unstable that the slightest thing could break it into total chaos, now, what was said thing?

The death of the god of War (and the crowning of Shamura as the new one)

With the cult of War falling into disarray new land opened for other gods to conquer, eliminating each other and trying to destroy every new god that would try to arise, as we know in the end the Old Faith prevailed, and Shamura was left with three choices:

Destroy all the crowns, asserting the Old Faith as the only force, but risking of sending reality itself in disarray (no one knows what crowns even existed other than the five ones we know, and one of them is Death)

Let them free, and restarting the cicle, with the possibility of the Old Faith succumbing to another God

Or use their knowledge to find other territories where the crowns could choose new bearers without disturing the peace in their home (<- the one they choose, of course)

Okay to start I don’t think that as soon as Laena Daemon thought let me go marry my youngest daughter as soon as she’s legal. Yes, he’s a Targaryen, but even they have their limits. The parent-child line has never been crossed before.

So obviously in this scenario, he never marries Rhaenyra.

Daemon was going to head back to Pentos with the girls in toe after the funeral, but to keep him in Westeros his brother forces Rhaenyra back to Kings Landing and gifts him Dragonstone.

Baela still is fostered at Driftmark(Rhaenys tries to foster them both, but he says no) so it’s just him and Rhaena occupying the insland. He still ignores her though.

Rhaena is extremely isolated on Dragonstone. Her mom just died and her sister, her best friend has gone away, and her father acts like she doesn’t exist.

She tries so hard for him to pay attention to her for I think the first couple of months, but then he snaps at her(as she asks him if he would take her out to ride on Caraxes when she was little and he tells her she isn’t a child anymore and dragons aren’t for joyrides), which causes her to become closed off to him(and to pretty much everyone else) as well.

He’s always kept his distance emotionally because it’s not just that she has his vulnerability, it’s also the fact that she reminds him of Laena which is why he can’t let her go.

He can’t let her go off to Driftmark with Baela because what if she gets hurt? What if someone hurts her? What if she hurts herself? He has to be physically there to keep the monsters away. He couldn’t save Laena, but he could save her.

So he’s there, he’s trying to be a father to her, but just not there in the way she needs him to be.

As the years go by he really starts to see how much she’s like Laena or himself. Like he’ll see her passing by him in the hall and he sees Laena standing there in her place. Or like on rare occasions, they share a meal and he sees her smiling and there is something in it that makes him see his younger self. It’s really a mind f*ck, but he tries to put it out of his mind.

It wasn’t until she was around 15 that he started to question things.

I can imagine them visiting Kings Landing or Driftmark for a feast, a tourney, or to celebrate Baela’s nameday.

There is dancing of course and some greenboy who has been making eyes at Rhaena for a while asks for her hand in the next round.

Here is where Daemon starts to lose it.

He’s been acting pretty strange since they sat down to feast. He has Rhaena sitting at his side, which he never does. He’s taken Rhaena’s hand and won’t let go of it. He’s whispering in her ear and trying to make her laugh. He’s even kissed her on the cheek. He is being extremely attentive and it's very weird.

Now to onlookers and even Rhaena herself nothing about what he’s doing screams inappropriate. It’s not abnormal to have your daughter at your side. His hand is respectably placed. It’s not weird to place a peck on her cheek. His not saying anything dirty, but it’s all a bit alarming to her.

She starts to think he’s sick and dying, because why else is he being nice to her, but then the boy approaches, and Daddy dearest tells the boy to go f*ck off.

Rhaena of course doesn’t think anything of it because he’s her father. She writes it off as him being overprotective and the reason for his weird behavior. So she places a kiss on his cheek and takes the boy’s outstretched hand.

Daemon is pissed off. He was already glaring at the boy, but now he’s shouting daggers into his back the whole time he sees him twirling her around.

Another round starts, he thought his torture would be over, but they keep going. He knows that he should be happy for her, she’s smiling and laughing, but Rhaenys comes over and makes a comment about a betrothal, and then he’s out of his seat and storming from the dias to the dance floor to take Rhaena to bed.

I think it’s a rather spur-of-the-moment decision that he chooses to marry her. It hits him with this incident that she is not his to keep forever.

Shamefully he can picture Baela, with a lord husband, the children she has with him, everything, but for some reason, he can’t picture the same for Rhaena. He can’t picture her ever being away from his side, but that’s impossible.

He goes back and forth over things. He receives a letter from Rhaenyra(it’s the usual asking him to marry her/betroth their children/the greens are out to get her), but it makes him make up his mind.

Rhaena is completely caught off guard by the whole thing.

They are back on Dragonstone's shores and Daemon has gone back to ignoring her. Until one night he invites her to join him in the library. He offers her some wine, they go over their family tree, the history of old Valyria, and their traditions.

That’s fine, but it gets weird when he has them standing in front of one of those hideous Valyrian porn tapestries and talks about how his brother had married Rhaenyra after Aemma died they could’ve avoided Alicent Hightower and Rhaenyra birthing bastards. The Gods wouldn’t punish them for it. No more than they would for a man lying with his own sister.

Rhaena is disturbed but writes it off as just another manifestation of his obsession with all things Valyria. She tells him that it’s getting late, and tries to exit stage left, but then he grabs hold of her.

He begins to rub down her arm, tells her that she's become so beautiful, and then brings her hand to his lips and places a kiss on the back of it. It lingers, but he lets her go, and she wastes no time running off to her chambers.

The morning comes and she blocks out the previous night. As she's going about her day she's relieved to not come across Daemon. She retires early. Thinking that if she does so he won't bother to call her to come to the library.

She's in her night clothes when some maids arrive at her chambers. One with a set of Valyrian wedding robes. Her heart drops when she sees them, thinking back to last night.

The whole time the maids help her are helping her dress she's telling herself that this isn't happening. She's on autopilot when she arrives on the beach. Right until she sees a Septon and her father in a matching set of robes waiting for her🔥🐉
