I have sooooo many fucking thought comparing the different versions of the musical with the concept album so I'm going to fill up my queue part by part

Valjean and Javert

Gonna start with the beginning, the concept album is COMPLETELY devoid of songs regarding Valjean's background. I'm guessing the staging was meant to explain all of it via talking but it was still quite a shock. Valjean and Javert are put at a background role to make more room for Marius, Fantine, Cosette and Gavroche. Speaking of Fantine, Valjean's the one to fire her in this version ! It's explicit ! I haven't read the brick yet so idk if this is more book accurate but it felt like it gave a very different image of mr Madeleine then what is usually done. Generally speaking he lacks that very soft, kind feeling ; he isn't mean per se but does a lot of dry remarks, and isn't particularly kind nor does he seem to believe in the good of humanity. Maybe the spoken scenes would prove me wrong though idk I haven't found any way to read/listen to those. No confrontation song :( a shame it's my fav one and with the singers it would have sounded phenomenal I'm sure. Javert and Valjean only interact once (there's no Valjean sparing Javert song either) during Fantine's arrest, which told me that, yes, Javert's little "but monsieur le maire ����🥺🥺"s are in fact an og feature of the musical.

On Javert's part, his only solo song is "Black or white" which is the equivalent of Javert's solliquoly (no stars 😔). The lyrics put a shit ton of emphasis on his status as worker of the state ("fonctionnaire") which makes sense but I thought it was funny lol. He's pretty much the exact same, except that, like the rest of the musical his song feel a lore more raw and crude. I would say this version of Javert's suicide is my favorite ; it transpires Javert's spiraling really wall : first he tries to reinforce his beliefs, calling himself the righteous and the good, then doubt comes in, and then he goes fucking insane. It also features a description of him drowning during which the music remains really intense and angry and oughhh that made me a little sad :(

I think a lot about the folkloric story that Victor Hugo describes (or invents) in Les Mis, that uses dogs/wolves as a metaphor for that way that Inspector Javert betrays his own social class. It feels very fairytale-like, so here’s a Lotte-Reiniger style adaptation. Many thoughts, many emotions. I may animate this eventually. (And thanks to @valvertweek for the motivation!)
