A Lutheran church in Bethlehem is displaying a sombre Christmas message, with a nativity scene that depicts an infant Jesus surrounded by rubble to reflect the devastation in Gaza.

Inside the West Bank church, a model of baby Jesus lies swaddled in a kaffiyeh, the distinctive patterned Palestinian scarf, as a light glows from amid the stones.

Rev Munther Isaac, pastor of the Evangelical Lutheran Christmas Church in Bethlehem, said that the image was intended to portray the suffering of families in Gaza.

“We came with the idea of a manger in the rubble and it’s inspired from the difficult images we see on a daily basis on our television screens of children being pulled from under the rubble in Gaza. These images break us and are devastating. We are tired of the world rationalising and justifying the killing of our children in Gaza.”

Had a realisation today. On Christmas I opened up to my Dad about how I was feeling about my life and he said “yeah I’m surprised about how your life is turning out too, instead of being in a band yourself you’ve just dated men in bands and followed them around” and it took me a few days to realise how cruel and sexist and wrong that is.

Anyway I’ve been at my mums house in the town I spent my teenage years. I’ve done a couple tarot readings, my mums very spiritual and it’s something I’m quite ambivalent about for myself, but been doing a lot of feeling and thinking and I feel a bit of a shift with how I see myself and what I believe about myself and I realised the reason I haven’t made music or wrote anything significant yet is because I’ve been busy living. I’ve been accumulating so much experience and soaking up a lot of inspiration and influences and art and I remember now that it never felt right before. I didn’t know and couldn’t feel the messages I wanted to share or the sounds and images I wanted to create. So what if I’m 26? That’s still young, but it’s also not too young. All of that time wasn’t wasted it was just me ripening. I feel very certain about that right now.

Movies where there is a Hero’s Journey. The kind of movies that would resonate with you right now are ones that include determination, downfalls, choices, ambition, discovery, and success. This may even be a series. You need a clear high and low moment movie that lets you sit in it. This doesn’t necessarily have to be a traditional Hero’s Journey. It can be about a person’s internal struggle or a struggle to get out of a certain situation. Antwone Fisher came to mind.

Wendell and Wild Commentary - Tim Burton vs. Black People

About a month ago, I watched Wendell and Wild on Netflix. I know it's been a minute, but I had to sit on my thoughts for a while. You see clay-mation horror films contain a feeling of nostalgia for me, considering the popularity of classics like The Nightmare Before Christmas and Coraline. Wendell and Wild, being directed by the same master of clay animation, Henry Selick, seemed to purposefully contrast the image of Tim Burton's family horror genre in its capacity to include people of color. This purposeful and creative insertion of Black people, Black culture, and contemporary issues made me question the validity of my nostalgic memories and assess the messaging behind the film.

Tim Burton has occasionally alluded to Black people and characters not fitting the aesthetic of his films, when asked about his primarily White casting. That, folks, is a can of worms if I've ever seen one. Without getting into the psychology of his statements, they were very controversial remarks that served as a talking point within the Black community. Additionally, Selick's continued partnership with Burton gave Selick much creative freedom but resulted in primarily Burton's acclaim. Ultimately, Selick does not share the same views about Blackness in horror media, and he decided to reach out to the iconic Key and Peele with an idea for a new project.

Whether it was purposeful or not, (likely it was, due to Peele's progress in the Black horror genre) the trio would create a counterargument of a film to challenge the concerns of Burton. Though most would likely agree that style, artistic expression, and various aesthetics are raceless and genderless, a contemporary example is always helpful. In Wendell and Wild, we are presented with a Black, goth girl as our protagonist who certainly doesn't hold back when it comes to teenage angst and supernatural surprises. We are also shown a compassionate, transgender character who was pleasantly multi-dimensional in both the plot and in personality. The dialogue is filled with AAV, Afro-centric subliminal messages, and some hilarious, Black-inspired one-liners. There is also some educational commentary on the school-to-prison pipeline which largely affects Black and Latin demographics, and you can read more about it here.

The artistic style of the film and the animation quality was top tier. I would recommend watching the film just to see what an amazing production the film actually is for the eye. Additionally, there were interesting interpretations of various environments, like hell being an amusement park or a manifestation of consciousness being a neon green, internal landscape. There was a lot of creativity in this film, resulting in a whacky whimsicalness that children are sure to love. The new take also held my attention as an adult viewer, because I was curious about the world-building aspects.

While I personally enjoyed watching the film, I don't find it to be particularly memorable. Perhaps I cannot compare it to the emotions I felt while viewing the other aforementioned films because I no longer have the lens of a child. I worry the film did not gain the popularity it deserved in relation to other hits like Paranorman and Corpse Bride. Obviously, the Wendell and Wild is fundamentally different from the other films in many ways, but something about the tropes in the plot or the incorporation of progressive modernism grounded the fictional movie in too much reality. It felt very much as if I was watching a television special rather than a children's feature film. Though many new concepts were introduced, it was predictable enough to leave little room for imagination of the viewer.

Ultimately the film proves that Black writers, actors, characters, and other marginalized groups, are more than worthy of being in the horror animation space. As a Black viewer, I actually had a lot of joy watching the film and could relate well to some of the characters. Though I don't see the film establishing quite the same legacy as some of Selick's other works, I hope it serves as a pioneer for others to follow in its niche.

HELLO CARROT!

Given how apparently I’m immune to playing OW games without recording them now, you’ll audibly hear my thoughts within the next few weeks (I’m posting tomorrow because I’m an absolute maniac), BUT I WANNA SAY THINGS HERE BECAUSE APPRECIATION CAN’T WAIT THAT LONG!

Also Merry Christmas! It’s midnight when I’m writing this, so ‘tis the day of caroling and festivities and woah. Or happy holidays if you don’t celebrate!

Back to the Our Cinderella topic, I have only played Genzou’s route as of now (I’m sure that’s hardly surprising, he is my fav), but the others are next. Their time is coming. They cannot escape. SO SPOILERS FOR GENZOU’S ROUTE!

First off, I saw you included the little dancing in front of TV Iggy pose and the joy I felt seeing it was off the charts. I kept bringing it up, I was very happy. And seeing Iggy moving about was really cool in general, even without the novelty of seeing a suggestion I made exist in the game.

NEXT UP! Genzou drunk singing is an image I didn’t know I needed, thank you for the visual and the brain food. BUT ALSO I HAVE BEEN CONNECTING JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR SONGS TO OW FOR SO LONG AND HEARING THE MUSICAL BE MENTIONED BY GENZOU THREW ME FOR A LOOP. Great musical, very nice. Last Supper reminds me of Genzou and Orlam. Judas’s voice in general reminds me of Orlam. Musicals and OW can further connect in my brain hobby drawer.

The text interactions in general were really funny, actually. I liked the absolute chaos that was Iggy and Genzou’s text conversations, I was laughing while trying to read a lot of the time. I remember the aforementioned drunk singing conversation and the puddle one both got me pretty good while I was reading, and it was overall fun to see more lighthearted conversations from the characters, even if it’s in a different universe from the main canon.

To end things off, ‘cause again 1) I haven’t finished all the game’s routes yet, and 2) you’ll be able to hear my thoughts in the moment if you choose in future anyways, I wanna mention the version of Cinderella Bucks tells at the end? I can’t get it out of my head. When I was thinking about the game after having just played it, my mind kept flashing back to CinderJesus. It absolutely decimated my brain function, but in a very fun way. More slice-of-life Bucks, please, she’s peak comedy.

Very fun game, 10/10, very sad I couldn’t buy the Kirby in the first playthrough but it’s on my to-do list, aaaand yeah! Thank you for making this! I loved every minute of it, and I’m really excited to play the remaining routes once my irl festivities are over.

Talbott reread the last stanzas of the poem aloud, just under his breath, quieter than Madam Pince’s superhuman hearing could catch. Imagism—simplicity, clarity of expression, and precision, without excess of verbiage. Feelings and meaning through concrete, detailed images. He could feel the narrator’s somberness—perhaps an admiration for beauty and light in darkness, perhaps some mourning for their loss. It was an excellent way to deliver a message, he thought.

But what if he should take a different approach? There were centuries of poetic movements and scores of groups within those movements and hundreds of styles within those groups. So many ways to tell someone something. So many ways to convey admiration. He could write a Shakespearean sonnet, or a series of haiku, or abandon structure altogether. 

He stared at the blank piece of parchment before him, quill motionless in his hand, and then shifted his gaze back to the castle of books he’d inadvertently built around the desk. He suppressed a groan. It was no use. He had gone through every poetry collection in the Hogwarts library, from the works of scholars from ancient Greece and distant Chinese dynasties to the stanzas of French revolutionaries and English journalists, and he had yet to find the inspiration he sought. 

Why was this so hard? He wrote poetry all the time. He’d never had this much trouble before. 

He’d never written a poem like this one, either.

Half-heartedly, he turned another page in his book. He hadn’t gone through many of the more contemporary poems yet. Maybe he could search for inspiration there next. 

“Hi, Talbott! What’s that you’re working on?”

Startled, Talbott swiftly dragged the book over the parchment. The blank parchment. That he hadn’t written anything on yet. 

Brilliant move, Winger. You’re not acting suspicious at all. 

Nancy had appeared next to him with a quizzical smile. “I didn’t forget an assignment, did I?” she asked, a little worriedly. “I thought the term was over.”

“It is,” he said. “I’m just, er, writing a letter for… Yeah, just writing a letter.”

“Oh.” Her smile quirked even more. “Then what are all the books for?”

“Reading,” he said, which was the daftest answer he could have given. Of course books were for reading; that hadn’t been her question. No one checked out a whole fortress of books for a bit of light reading—not even a Ravenclaw. But he didn’t elaborate, and she didn’t press, to his relief. 

“Well, er, I always enjoy a good book,” she said. She shifted her weight from foot to foot. She adjusted her glasses—took her time before she settled on the right words. “I came to ask you—Dumbledore needs volunteers to put up the last of the Christmas decorations. Not many people are here over the holidays, and Hagrid and Flitwick already have so much work to do. I’m on my way to the Great Hall to help out. Would you like to join?”

“You’re staying for Christmas again?” he asked. He wasn’t entirely used to the concept of people who had families choosing to stay away from home during the most family time of the year. He wasn’t complaining; he understood—in Nancy’s case, probably more than she knew. It was just…he wasn’t used to it.  

“I am,” she said. “I think it’ll be fun. It’s almost better, in some ways, to spend Christmas with friends, don’t you think?”

“I…suppose.” That was something else he wasn’t used to. The friends part, specifically. 

“I’ll still write to my family, anyway.” She fidgeted with the ends of her hair. In the soft light of the library, her dark locks were a rich brown-black. “Sooo how about it? Want to decorate with me?”

“I can’t,” he said, too quickly and with too little thought. “I need to finish my, er, letter.” Which he did, sort of. He’d been working for hours with nothing to show. Belatedly, he added, “Sorry,” because he often forgot to say sorry (not that he didn’t mean it; he simply forgot to communicate it), and people didn’t like that. And he didn’t want Nancy to not like him.

Her face fell, a sign he had messed up anyway. “Oh,” she said, her cheeks flushing pink. “That’s okay. Maybe later, then.”

She trudged away. The candlelight fell across her retreating form, granting her dark hair a gentle glow where it tumbled past her shoulders. Talbott looked away. His gaze fell to the book of Flint poems, open overtop of his blank parchment. 

But as the moon creeps slowly

over the tree-tops

among the stars,

I think of her

and the glow her passing

sheds on the men.

Talbott slammed the book shut, heart pounding unexpectedly. Madam Pince hissed at him from some dark corner of the library. On second thought, maybe Imagism was too direct. There were other ways to convey a message.

Quickly, he shoved all the books on a return cart, gathered up his quill and parchment, and bolted from the library, ignoring another furious hiss from Madam Pince. In the corridor, he saw green-trimmed robes about to round the corner. 

“Nancy, wait!” he called, walking as fast as he could without breaking into a full sprint. The Slytherin politely waited for him to catch up. “I changed my mind. A break would be good, I think.” He rubbed the back of his neck. “Library was a bit…stuffy.”

Her lips pulled into a broad grin. She clapped her hands together. “Great! This will be so much fun! I mean, decorating’s already fun, but it’ll be extra fun with you.”

“I don’t know if I’m any good at it. It’s been a while since…” 

A white feather necklace draped around his neck. Red-petaled flowers crowding a chipped table. Peppermint on his mum’s hands. Paper snowflakes stuck to a pale blue wall. Music from a crackly wireless. His dad’s foot tapping in time. 

Since my last proper Christmas.

“Don’t worry! You can’t get it wrong, not if you’re having fun.” She did a little spin so that she was walking backwards in front of him, hands behind her back. “You know, if you’ve been in the library all day, we could work outside. Hagrid set up a huge Christmas tree in the training grounds, and he hasn’t had the time to make it pretty. We could do it, just the two of us…if you want.”

He looked down at her (he had to; she was shorter than him) and looked at her grin, and he didn’t think he could say no if he wanted to, because his heart kept pounding. Outside would be good. Compared to the Great Hall, almost no one would be outside, so he wouldn’t be crowded. It would just be…just the two of them.

“Sure, let’s do it,” he said, before he could lose courage. “I prefer being outdoors.”

“Great! It’ll be cold out. Want to meet at the entrance hall in fifteen minutes?”

“Sure.”

“Perfect. See you then!” She dashed off towards the dungeons, robes fluttering behind her. Talbott watched her go, feeling the sudden urge to take off into the winter mountain air and fly until his heart calmed down. He restrained himself, though, and instead walked to Ravenclaw Tower to retrieve his cold weather clothes.

London, my beautiful,

I will climb

into the branches

to the moonlit tree-tops,

that my blood may be cooled

by the wind.

That was it. No more Flint poems for him.

Hello Everyone!

Well, here we are 2 days into 2024! I hope you all had a very nice Christmas break.

As we welcome this new year, I'm acknowledging more and more, at a deeper level, what a blessing it is to have a full, clean slate ahead during this leap year - that we can fill up with all sorts of plans and dreams! I've been seeking The Lord and asking Him to guide all of my steps again this year. I'm excited to leap into 2024 and see what this year holds for me and my family! And for you, too!

Last night, as I'm sure many of you noticed, the Christmas movies stopped cold turkey on TV. It's always kind of sad to see them go. I watched "One Royal Holiday," starring Laura Osnes, until the Hallmark Channel left Christmas at 10pm EST. and went back to the 80's sitcom, "The Golden Girls." 

I turned it then to the last Christmas movie of the day and holiday season on Great American Family, "A Christmas Blessing," starring Lori Loughlin, James Tupper, and Jesse Hutch. Even though I've watched it numerous times since it premiered in mid-November, the inspiring message touched my heart anew. Otto, the Angel, played by Jesse Hutch, shares the well-known scripture from Ecclesiastes 3, which states, "To everything there is a season..." and the profound statement, "Time really has no meaning. Love. The Christmas spirit. That does." (see in the promo video above)

Those words stood out to me afresh as we are now embarking on a new season in life - after Christmas. We will cherish the holy Christmas season of 2023, remember it well, and hold onto the warm feeling, too, as we settle into the Winter season of January and all the newness each day has to offer us. Perhaps, we can still find ways to give to others, and that will be living out the true spirit of Christmas all year round.Holiday Road - Hallmark Channel

As for Great American Family, I noticed a woman asked the network on their Facebook page, "Will you be showing new movies throughout the year? Maybe some new series? I look forward to whatever you have for us."

And Great American Family responded with, "Stay tuned for exciting announcements for 2024 and beyond!"

So, I guess we will have to wait for movie news, but if you've been watching Great American Family these past few weeks, you may have noticed the mention (at the bottom of the screen) of a new series coming in February to Great American Family, titled "County Rescue."

"County Rescue" stars Brett Varvel ("Mayberry Man," "Running the Bases"), Julia Reilly ("A Perfect Christmas Pairing"), Tanya Christiansen ("I Still Believe") and more, and includes an appearance from Christian singer, Colton Dixon, who portrays himself. The series is from the production company, Canyon Productions, whose mission statement is... "Canyon Productions creates movies and series that encourage and share the Good News. Our ambition is to create projects that are uplifting and point the audience to God’s love." Many (if not all) of the Canyon Productions' previous films and series can be seen on Great American Pure Flix. Synopsis for "County Rescue" via Canyon Productions: With one paramedic opening, Dani Miller must set aside her recent heartbreak and prove herself worthy of the job while competing against the mayor’s impulsive son and an over-qualified rookie. I'm sure Great American Family will be sharing even more details soon. Again, Happy 2024, Everyone! Let's leap into this New Year together and have a Happy One!!!

Engrams and Moonwalks - Modern Muggle AU, Wolfstar and Jily (hints of Jegulily, which I might explore with future one shots), Remus is a dog-walker, Sirius is an ex-Scientologist. This was my first multi-chapter and I put a lot of effort into the images and formatting and it was so much fun. It's best to read it in a browser.

You and Me, Moony - Moonseeker first war AU one-shot. From a universe where Remus was in Ravenclaw and dated Regulus at Hogwarts (similar to Wolfsbane) but in this universe Voldemort and the first war separates them, until one day... well, you'll see.

The Three Soulmates of Pandora Lovegood - Canon compliant and focuses on the friendship between Pandora and Regulus Black. (I'm considering a sequel in which she attempts to complete his mission to destroy the horcrux and well, canon compliant so...)

TWITTER

Twitter, one of the few mega giant apps I considered in the whole social media platform spectrum, due to its popularity and longevity. It was founded by Evan Williams, Biz Stone, and Noah Glass in 2004. At the time, they didn’t really have a clear direction as to how they wanted the platform to be, up until engineer Jack Dorsey proposed a short message service (SMS) where one could share and send bloglike updates with friends. Dorsey would send his first post on March 2006, and followed up on July 2006 with a completed version of the platform. Glass proposed the name Twttr, due to being inspired from the name Flickr, however, six months after the launch, the name was eventually changed to Twitter.

Some may say that it’s similar to Facebook in terms of being able to share posts, socialize and have the opportunity to promote your business/brand. However, Twitter is slightly different due to having its own unique features and structure.

The image above shows the Home page and gives you the point of view if you’re using the platform on a desktop. At first glance, it may seem slightly busy, upon seeing many clickable links to go to, however, don’t be afraid, it’s easy to navigate through. I’ll give you a quick tutorial/run through of the various functions to better understand the app:

Home: As shown in the image above, this is where you will see all of the tweets that are both shared by you and the people you follow.

Explore: Here, a search bar provided for you to search for anyone by their twitter handles, also, there are many trending topics to discover.

Notifications: Here it shows if someone likes your tweet, notifies of people following you, mentions someone tagging you to a post,/comment, notifications from twitter relating to your profile etc.

Messages: Here is where messages are stored between you and others.

Twitter Blue: This allows you to become a blue subscriber, where you can create longer tweets up to 10,000 characters. (Disclaimer it will cost you $84.00 for a yearly subscription).

Profile: This is where you can see everything on your feed that you have liked, retweeted and make edits to your profile.

THE BUSINESS SIDE OF TWITTER

One thing I have noticed from using twitter is businesses/brands have huge followings to their profiles, and this is caused by the engagement with the audience/customers. Let’s look at Starbucks as an example. Starbucks as we know is one of the biggest coffee franchises in the world and they provide excellent customer service. Their Twitter page tends to highlight:

Charities that they are apart of such as ACRSNEWS nonprofit organization and the Born This Way Foundation, just to name a few.

They retweet posts from users who share their experience with the brand.

They stay with the trending scene by creating tweets relevant to their old and new menu selection.

Pictures, videos and GIFs of various beverages, delicious treats or even customers enjoying their meals are shared  on their home page.

Holiday specials are advertised like their Christmas #RedCupDay, which is a limited edition reusable red cup with the purchase of any holiday handcrafted beverage.

So, Twitter plays a great role on allowing businesses/brands to engage with their target audience and even gravitate new audiences to them. I, however, am curious to know what is the future outcome of Twitter, seeing that Jack Dorsey stepped down as CEO and left the company back in May 2022, and now Mr. Elon Musk had purchased the company. Changes had already been made regarding the subscription that I mentioned earlier about Twitter Blue and he has indicated of implementing future changes. Only left to be seen.
