Over the last few months, with the COVID-19 pandemic, people’s usage of social media has been increasing more and more. Users have been spending hours glued to their screens and scrolling through different types of content. This inspired Instagram to take advantage of the situation and expand its feed with the launch of “suggested posts” which I will discuss in this article.

Yes, you’ve heard it right! Instagram is introducing a new listing of suggested posts that will be added at the end of your feed. Basically, Instagram is telling you to keep scrolling down because the content on it is endless. Back in 2018, the platform introduced a new feature “You’re all caught up” to notify the users when they’ve scrolled through all their content. Today, Instagram is going to be using this space more effectively by suggesting organic posts as well as ads from accounts you don’t follow.

The two features might seem a bit contradictory. However, instead of telling you not to keep scrolling anymore since you’ve caught up on everything, the platform is giving you the option to choose whether you want to keep scrolling through the suggested posts or just stop when you’re all caught up. Instagram is basically allowing you to choose how you want to spend your time. In fact, the platform has been testing two versions of this new introduction over the last years. One of these versions appeared in June and consisted of splitting the screen into two: Older and Suggested. However, it appears that the platform hasn’t gone with this version of the test as it went with the suggested posts.

In addition to that, brands also can benefit from this new feature as it has been found effective in increasing the exposure of businesses on the platform and generating engagement from the users. Users reaching the end of their feed will be exposed to product posts and ads based on people’s searches. For example, Americana Bakeries and So Fresh are two brands on Instagram that are capable of enhancing their exposure on the platform and reaching users who are interested in food. That being said, Instagram will be the intermediary between the buyers and the sellers by simply focusing on the items that the users have previously searched.

In conclusion, this new feature seems to be an effective one to engage more with the users and to increase the exposure of branded content. Now, some people might oppose this new update considering that they’re only interested in seeing their friends’ content. However, we need to look at the added value that comes with this new update.
