Other societies did what the economic historian Ester Boserup described as intensification: they innovated and adapted.

something to say about how in the ch3 secret boss route you can only ever interact violently with the world of the game. you have one button. you have a sword. the world is nothing but obstacles to be broken. it's a clear and brilliant breakdown of how gameplay shapes your view of a game's world, but it also feels very clearcut as to our relationship with kris. here is a world where the only mode of interaction happens in a violent way.

Project 2025, written by members of the Trump administration and Trump's political cronies, wants to get rid of NOAA which includes the National Hurricane Center. They are hardcore climate deniers who wish to erase all evidence of climate change to protect the fossil fuel industry.
While no two hurricanes are alike, there is something potentially worrisome about Category 4 Hurricane Helene. It has been the latest in rapidly intensifying storms. The era of rapid intensification probably began in 1992 with Cat 5 Hurricane Andrew. But Helene moved through the Gulf of Mexico at a rapid rate for a hurricane at such latitudes. At one point it was moving at 24 MPH/44 KmH. What that means is that its momentum took it further inland with less loss of intensity than a slower moving storm.
So at 2 AM Friday, Helene was still a full-blown hurricane well into inland (as opposed to coastal) Georgia.

People in Savannah were probably astonished to have a hurricane 150 miles to the west rather than one 150 miles to the east.
With rapid intensification AND rapid movement of hurricanes, areas further inland are now in greater danger. The Trump/Project 2025 destruction of our ability to monitor cyclones would do to climate and meteorology what the destruction of Roe v. Wade has done to reproductive health.

NBC 6’s John Morales, who has worked in meteorology for more than 40 years, warned of Milton’s “horrific” power as it approaches Florida.
The man got completely choked up as he was explaining that storm dropped 50 millibars in 12 hours. This is fucking insane.

whereas i‘m glad it continues to exist i think it’s so upsetting that chelsea hotel has turned into just another gentrified fancy several hundred $ a night hotel that exclusively is occupied by high fashion rich folk fancy pants… like do you think they would let a struggling pre-fame 25-year old patti smith stay there now? a strung out sid vicious? ragged beat poets? Do you think they would even let „no name“ artists stay there and occupy large rooms permanently and accept paintings when they can’t come up with their rent? It’s like the people who hang out there now do an aestheticized cosplay of struggling artists in their perfectly staged photo shoots but actual struggling artists would get kicked to the curb in like a minute, they probably couldn’t even afford to have drinks there now lol

You've talked a bit about the Ascendant's motivations, but I have a question about Rosalie's. We know that she was trying to find ways to "fix her mistake", so to say, in not objecting to the ritual and letting Astarion ascend. True resurrection, Wish, etc. Obviously none of them were panning out until she met Hemlock and potentially has a lead for deciphering Wish.
Assuming he never did anything to lure her in, would she have kept looking for a solution for the rest of her life? Or would she have eventually given up and just kept in hiding forever so he couldn't find her? 10 years of looking for a solution to a seemingly impossible problem sound draining even without having to magically hide from your crazy ex and never being able to have another long term partner due to fears of what said crazy ex would do.
hahahaahahahaahahahahahahaha! this question! this question hurts me! in the best way!
so. um. here's the funny thing about your first Tav being defined by her break up with an ex that triggered her agoraphobia/anxiety/severe depression that then defined the next several years of her life and leaves her feeling like she'll never escape the shadow of her ex UNTIL she gets medicated by a tadpole and meets a new group of friends and then the new partner she's convinced she's unworthy of-
um-
yeah. so. I don't think. Rosalie. is very good at moving on.
Her break-up with Threnn was messy (I do stand by my argument made in Party Favours about it not being *about* Threnn, but about Rose's own mental health decline, and how trapped she becomes in one version of herself. my own understanding of my own depression means that the events that can lead people into their worst state often becomes decontextualised from the events that lead up to it, etc. Rose doesn't mourn Threnn, she mourns the person she was before Threnn, and feels trapped in the place she has reached, entirely separately of Threnn). But all that being said, the break up with Threnn did not have a body count. this one has a bodycount.
I genuinely do not think, given the steps she has taken to isolate herself and thus prevent herself from forming new, meaningful connections, Pieces Rosalie would never have stopped looking for a cure. it is extremely unhealthy, and it is extremely draining. Both parties in Pieces are very fucked up, it's just that Rosalie is quiet and self-destructive about it, and it's easier to stealth being fucked up when your ex is over there doing... whatever the fuck that is.
She would've continued to have a life that, from the outside, looks like it's successful and independent of Astarion and Ascendency, and is, at it's core.... completely defined by Astarion and Ascendency. She would have been very sad, and very lonely. I imagine she'd looked for cures so that her loneliness had a projected end-date, more for herself than anybody else.
Both of them become the worst and saddest versions of themselves in that timeline, the end. :(((((((

Agricultural intensification under the guise of sparing “wilderness” can lead to greater deforestation and disease spillover. By the Jevons paradox, more efficient extraction and cheapening production can increase resource use and associated environmental destruction overall. Empirical evidence suggests that, with few exceptions, agricultural intensification programs lead to more deforestation, not less. So the specific mode of agriculture matters a great deal in assessing its role in forest destruction, biodiversity loss, and the production of food.

Is it possible that 9/11 happened in the world of Cars?
How the hell (forgive my words) did it happen? Did the car hijackers forced the plane to crash into the towers or was it the plane itself that flew into it?
Why would their world not have the capacity for tragedy?

In 2010 the Tampa Bay Regional Planning Council produced a fictional but realistic video about a hypothetical Category 5 hurricane hitting Tampa Bay.
The fictional storm in the vid is called Hurricane Phoenix. If Hurricane Milton does strike the region as a Cat 5, we'll see how accurate the 2010 depiction was.
youtube
In 2020, a record year for Atlantic basin hurricanes, they produced a revised and shorter version of Hurricane Phoenix.
youtube
Hurricane Milton will likely make landfall as a major hurricane just after midnight on Thursday. But the exact location is not yet clear.
There's certainly a lot of interest in Hurricane Milton. When I tried to access the National Hurricane Center site on Monday, I got a 503 message.

They have since added capacity.
Meteorologists Jeff Masters and Bob Henson mentioned this at Yale Climate Connections...
Record hot sea surface temperatures in the area of the Gulf of Mexico where Milton formed were made up to 400-800 times more likely by climate change.
Warm water acts like jet fuel for hurricanes. The Gulf of Mexico has felt like a giant hot tub for the past few years.
The strength of Hurricane Milton is due to extreme rapid intensification – something they didn't have an expression for a few years ago.
