Starck opening — invite [with Stevie Nicks...]

Some kind of mischief
The Starck Club: Memories of ecstasy, lifelong friendships and what went down in those famously large bathrooms
The Starck Club was a Studio 54 for a city still shaking off its reputation as the home of J.R. Ewing.
A warehouse in the West End designed by French architect Philippe Starck, the place came to define the decadent mid-’80s before AIDS struck and ecstasy became illegal.
In anticipation of the sold-out Starck Club 40th Anniversary Reunion today at the Kessler, we spoke to two people who were there, captured in this photo from 1987.
George Baum, 21 (now 58)
I was one of the few straight guys who worked the door.
I was dating a server there, but every night I was covered in lipstick.
I’d get pocketfuls of paper with people’s names on it.
I’d gone to a boys school in New England, and I’d met girls working in record stores, but nothing like this.
It was the greatest thing that ever happened to me.
We had a downstairs room that opened up on Sundays when the club was slower, and people entered through steps on the outside.
The stairwell was covered, but the steps led to open air, so those drips on the wall are probably rain.
There were drugs in the club, and probably every club in the ’80s, but it wasn’t a free-for-all.
People would pour cocaine on a table, and they’d get kicked out.
But there were bathrooms with these massive stalls.
You could have a party in there.
Did people have sex in the bathrooms?
I mean, it was a very stimulating place, and we were all young and didn’t have any worries.
Sex was at the top of everyone’s mind.
I remember Cheryl.
She was part of a regular group I liked a lot.
I think this picture is a friendly greeting.
She’s clearly telling me something, but I have no idea what.
I heard all kinds of things.
I worked at Starck until it closed in 1989.
It wasn’t making the money it had, and it was replaced by a terrible nightclub called DV8.
I worked for them, but you had to ask to go to the bathroom.
We had these comp cards to give to women, and they’d grade women on a scale of 1-10 and pay you based on that, which was disgusting even then.
Luckily, they shut down soon after they opened.
Starck was just an exceptional club: the philosophy, the people, the music, the creativity of the people. I’ve never seen anything like it since.
Cheryl Sharp, 20 (now 57)
I remember George being sweet and sort of shy, and I always gave him a hug.
I’m probably telling him some big secret in this picture.
My hair looks like a crimped curling iron nightmare.
It probably cost more than my rent.
That’s not my natural color, I can tell you that.
My roommate Truett Pool and his mother had dressed me that night in a little tankini from Contempo Casuals with bike shorts and stockings.
I was like, OK!
It was a Sunday fun day.
Truett was the first person I met from Starck.
He was on the dance floor with his mom, a hot little number in all leather, just adorable.
He introduced me to some of his friends, and I’m still close with those people to this day.
My college in Arkansas had been very preppy, very sorority-oriented.
I moved to Dallas that year because the economy was better but also because of Starck.
From day one, it felt like a place I belonged.
My mom used to say it was a cult, because every time I came home, I was wearing a Starck Club shirt, but it wasn’t.
Although I did leave one Christmas Eve and drive six hours to go to the afterparty.
I think ecstasy should be in the water.
Wasn’t it originally for couples’ therapy?
It changed my life.
It made me more open, happy and accepting, and I think that’s where our deep friendships came from.
By 1987, I didn’t see anyone selling drugs at the bar, but I did tip the bartender Mike $20 for water so I could be on his guest list.
It was a wild time, yes, but an inclusive, fun time.

Three Days ~ 88
Tumblr media
~*~Sebastian~*~
After the video call with my friends, I went back to the couch with a fresh glass of wine. I am blessed. Family, friends, co-workers, and a woman who loves me. None of us are perfect. I have people to call when times are tough. Today they called me, knowing I’d be struggling, only this time it was in a good way. Not long later Jessica called and invited me to dinner.
Pizza, beer, friends, and a toddler made for a good night. Giulietta thought I was much more fun than mom or dad. I guess they don’t let her use them like a jungle gym. When mom spoiled our fun and said it was time to settle down, I stopped the tears by promising to read her a story. Her choice. Like someone else I know Giulietta was asleep before I was halfway through. At this rate I'll never know how anything ends.
I sent the picture Jessica had taken to Emma. She'd wake up to it and with any luck send me back something fun. Which she did as soon as she woke up. Which was afternoon for me. Dinner break before I checked my phone. Emma struck the perfect balance between sweet and sexy. Her hair was messy with just her eyes peeking over a pillow she was hugging. Those beautiful green eyes I loved to look into. I couldn't see her smile so I could imagine it anyway I liked. The sweet one she often got right before she told me she loved me. Or the other one she got when she wanted me. I loved them both.
Our texts were broken up over the course of the day. Short bursts or long hours between. We talked most days at least for a few minutes. We talked about our days, shared memories, and talked about us. Maybe had phone sex. What didn't happen was whining about being apart or bitching about the time and distance. I didn't hang up feeling angry or guilty. I did my job, hung out with friends, relaxed during my downtime, and did a little shopping. Emma relaxed, did some studying, and practiced guitar. I missed her. She missed me. But we went on with our lives apart, making the best of the situation. It sucked, except it didn't.
I think this is the way it's supposed to be.
Thursday we wrapped for Paris. That was worth a party. Over the next four days production would pack up and move to Rome. I'd spend a day and a half on planes going from Paris to Dallas to San Diego. Then back to Dallas and on to Rome. The time zones were going to fucking kill me.
I called Emma when I got back to my room. I was drunk and grumpy. Hearing her voice helped. Seeing her face was even better. The way she told me exactly what she wanted to do to me and said all sorts of dirty things until I came... I wasn't grumpy anymore.
I had a headache when my alarm rang. I needed more sleep. Hopefully, I'd catch up on the flight. I was still debating going back to sleep and blowing off the weekend when my phone rang. Emma. It was the middle of the night for her. "Why are you awake?"
She laughed, "Making sure your drunk ass doesn't turn off his alarm and blow off the weekend."
I rolled to my side, mirroring her. "I wouldn't do that. I was thinking about it, but I wouldn’t do it."
"Such a professional. How are you feeling?"
"I've been better. Advil, breakfast, and a long nap on the plane and I'll be fine. How are you?"
"Good. Big plans laying by the pool with Mallory today."
"Sounds fun. I will be on a plane."
"Yes, but you will walk out of the airport into sunny California. Then spend two days being adored and laughing with your friends."
"That will be fun." I was honestly looking forward to that part.
Emma yawned. I smiled at her beautiful face, "You need to go back to sleep. I need to get showered."
She didn't argue with me. She was tired.
"Thank you for making sure I was up. I love you."
"I love you." There was my sweet smile.
I cannot begin to explain how very disorientating it is to board a plane at nine am, travel for fifteen hours, to arrive at three pm, which is only six hours after you left. I get to relive eight of the hours I spent on the plane. Only thing is, my body thinks it’s midnight. I slept some on the flight and I knew better than to go back to sleep. The closer to "normal" bedtime for this time zone I could get, the better I would feel tomorrow. Anthony and I had press then an autograph session, before the big Marvel event. Sunday was photo ops and an autograph session. Both long days where I was expected to be pleasant despite how inappropriate or rude fans got. Needless to say, a decent night’s sleep would be best for everyone.
I got to my room by four and quickly realized I couldn't stay there. I needed fresh air. I needed to breathe. I changed into shorts and took off to have a look around. There were several hotels in the area that hosted celebrity guests. We weren't all in one place. I'd requested a beach. It was a little farther from the convention center and I was confident I could wander unseen. Most people stayed right around the center since a lot of packages kept prices lower and being so close to the action was appealing. I wanted the ocean.
Down the beach I could see big boulders and took off that direction. I needed some flip-flops. The sand made me think of Emma. The water. The people surfing. The impending sunset. Breathing. I'd like to say the plan I was cooking up was a product of sleep deprivation. It wasn't. It had been bouncing around in my head since this morning as we lay in bed together thousands of miles apart. I'd dismissed it as selfish. On the plane, when sleep was impossible, and I was panicking, it didn't seem so selfish. I shoved the idea away because I knew it really was. The same reasons I didn't ask Emma to stay in Paris or go to Rome were valid here. Asking her to fly literally to the other side of the country to spend two days with me, asking her to amuse herself while I worked a chunk of that time, was peak me as a selfish asshole. The longer I sat on the rock watching the ocean the less of a bad idea it seemed. Maybe not less of a bad idea, but an idea I could give her a choice in, with the difference being if she said no, I wouldn't be angry or make her pay for not doing what I wanted. Growth in action. Hopefully.
I should check flights before I even think about calling. Or actually call, because I'm already thinking about calling. Might not be possible.
It was. I flipped my phone in my hands several times before hitting the buttons to call her. Apparently, I hadn't grown completely out of being an ass.
"I'm about to be an asshole."
Emma raised her eyebrows, "Uh oh."
"Yeah." I was going to do it anyway. "Fifteen-hour flight with little sleep because the turbulence over the ocean was a nightmare. I'm grumpy, exhausted, and lonely as fuck. I'm on the beach without you. I miss you. I can get you on a flight in the morning and if you come straight to the venue you'll be here before I have to do anything. It’ll be two days. I have to leave for Rome Monday. I know it's a shitty thing to ask, but will you come see me? So I can see you."
"I'd love to."
I was prepared to step up my game and her easy acquiescence caught me off guard. "You will?"
She nodded with a smile, "I miss you too."
I took a deep breath and let it out, "I was prepared to beg."
Her smile was almost a laugh, "While you begging sounds fun, it's not necessary. Do I need to pack anything dressy?"
"Fuck, I hope not. I have a pair of jeans, shorts, and sweatpants." It's amazing how much better I felt. I ran my hands through my hair. "You're flying out of JFK. Sorry."
"You booked the flight already?"
"Not many seats left. I wasn't risking it. You leave at seven, here at ten. My first thing is noon." I could see her grabbing her carry-on from the closet.
"I'm going to spend the night at your place. Do you want me to bring you anything?"
I scrunched up my face, "Underwear."
"You don't have underwear?"
"The one's I'm in and a spare."
"You may not like what I pick out."
"Emma, baby, I will wear yours as long as you deliver them."
"I think that's a little drastic."
"It's really not."
Emma laughed and touched her screen. I could almost feel her. I could definitely imagine feeling her. She almost gasped and broke into a smile, "I have an idea. I need to call Jill real quick. Give me five maybe ten minutes."
I nodded, "Okay. I'm going to lay here on my rock."
My rock was not soft, but I was very comfortable. I was very happy. The sky was blue and the sound of the waves was calming. I only had to wait until tomorrow to see Emma. It was going to be a good day.
A little more than five minutes later Emma was calling me back. "You've made my little sister very happy."
"Excellent!” I smiled, "How'd I do that?"
"We need to change my flight. Monday I'm going to Seattle pick up Olivia and take her back to New York with me. Then we'll meet up with the family in Chicago."
"That's perfect. You're not just coming out here for me."
She picked up on it. "Yeah, because seeing you isn't enough of a reason. You know I miss you, right?"
"I know, but I'm..."
Emma cut me off, "Stop there. I jump on planes to spend weekends on tour with dad. This is fun for me. Dad's doing sound checks, interviews, and charity shit while I amuse myself. You're not an asshole. I love this."
"You love this?" I did not love jumping on planes at short notice.
She was nodding as I spoke, "I love this."
"And you'd tell me to fuck off if you didn't?"
"Maybe, but this is your lucky day."
"No, my luck day was exactly eight weeks ago."
We talked for another ten minutes or so until she was loaded and heading into the city. We've talked while she's driving many times, but I wanted her to pay attention. The sun was going down where she was and it would be dark before she got to my place. I headed back toward the hotel and ordered room service. By the time Emma texted she was at mine and I was deep in a documentary, struggling to stay awake.
Emma ~ Safe and sound in your bed.
Naturally, she sent a picture. Sheet barely covering her breasts and one arm stretched out above her head.
I sent back a picture of me in the same pose, but making sure to show the empty side of the bed. I drew a red ✗ there.
Sebastian ~ Where you will be in my bed tomorrow.
Emma ~ Equally safe and sound Sebastian ~ More. Emma ~ I'm going to sleep. I will see you in the morning. Sebastian- Can not fucking wait
I was probably asleep before she was. By the time I woke up twelve hours later Emma was halfway here. I felt well-rested and excited for my day. Not just the Emma piece. Mackie and I always had fun together. I'd been sent the day’s itinerary. Noon was press, two thirty was an autograph session, and five was the big deal Marvel panel. We should be done by 6:30. Disney was having a party tonight. I had to make an appearance. It started at eight. That wasn't going to happen. Nine was more likely. I remembered it wouldn't matter because mice can't tell time.
At the venue I was led to a behind the scenes area. There was a large room, guarded by security, set with food and drink. Several smaller rooms encircled the larger area and some were labeled with company names. One of the largest was for Disney, with cloth wall dividers making several smaller rooms, where a stylist would be waiting to make sure Mackie and I looked presentable. Outside of the room was a loading area that was separated from the autograph booths by black curtains. I'd already ducked between them and gave fans nosing around my booth quite a surprise. Those were my favorite interactions. The ones without expectations. Security came over to make sure I hadn't been ambushed. I hadn't, but that was a perfect way to get away and I needed to talk to security anyway. I had them take me to the security office. Some lucky fans got a shot at a sighting of a Sebastian in the wild. I explained what was happening to the head of security and put Emma’s name on a list. They gave me a lanyard with her all-access pass and told me what door to direct her to. Security would meet her and bring her to me.
"About that." Call me paranoid, but I didn't trust they'd remember to have someone waiting for her. They'd call someone when she showed up and gave her name to the person with the list. "I need a Pearl Jam fan."
"Excuse me?"
"Someone on your staff is a Pearl Jam fan. Get them.”
He got on his radio, "Anyone out there a Pearl Jam fan?"
A voice came back, "Big Ed. He works all the shows up the coast."
I looked at my watch then back at the supervisor, "I need to borrow him for an hour."
His face read doubtful, but I was Disney. "Big Ed. I need you in the security office. Anyone see him? Send him."
A different voice, "On my way, boss."
Several minutes later Big Ed came through the door. I knew it was him because he was six-five and an easy two-fifty. He was his name. I held out my hand, "Hey, Big Ed. I'm Sebastian. Nice to meet you."
“You too."
"Walk me back to the guest area." We headed out and I waited until we were away from the office. "Do you know Ed's daughter?"
He smiled, "He has three. Which one?"
"The only one old enough for me to ask about."
"Emma. I've seen her at a couple of shows. I work security up the coast. Great way to see a bunch of shows."
I nodded, "I guess anything you miss at one you can catch at the next."
"Exactly." He pointed to his ear, "And you can always hear."
"Back to Emma. She's on her way here. I'd appreciate it if you would meet her and bring her to me."
"Is Ed coming?"
"No, he's," I stopped myself, "you ask her where he is."
He laughed, "I might take the long way back here."
"I haven't seen her in weeks. Not too long." Two is weeks. Barely.
Emma texted they'd landed. Big Ed changed where he wanted her to go and he headed in that direction. I sat down to wait for her to text she was here. I heard a familiar voice.
"Sebastian Stan? Is that really you?"
"Captain America?" I stood up and turned to the voice.
"Don't call me that. The pressure." Mackie hugged me, slapping my back much harder than necessary. "How jet-lagged are you?"
"Is that code for how much work are you going to have to do because I'm grouchy?"
"Maybe." We laughed.
"I had a good night’s sleep and I'm in a great mood."
"You seem twitchy. Why are you twitchy?"
"I'm not twitchy."
"Yes, you are. You're twitchy."
"If I'm twitchy it's because you're making me twitchy."
He pointed at me, "Ah ha! You admitted it. You're twitchy."
I rolled my eyes and scowled, "Emma's on her way. I might be a little twitchy."
"Here?" He pointed to the ground. With his eyebrows raised.
I smiled, "My girlfriend."
"Yeah, I got that. Plus, Evans told me."
"She’s not a secret." That felt good.
He asked and I answered. Talking about Emma is my second favorite thing having to do with Emma. First is being with Emma. In absolutely any way. My phone went off with Emma telling me she was here. I put my hand on Mackie’s arm. "Stay here. Right here."

Summer Break
Word Count: 786 Warnings:None, mention of divorce if anything. A/N:This was requested by anonymous, and I’m sorry it took a while, I just wanted to get it just right. __________________________________________________________
Dally had spent the last few weeks of the school year trying to talk you out of going to your aunt's house in New York. He told you horror stories about the street gangs and talked about how rude everyone was. He even told you a story about a time his dad got jumped on the way home from the bar one night, which was strange because Dal never talked about his old man. But on the day you were supposed to leave, Dallas Winston was in your room, helping you pack your bag, because he was a good boyfriend.
"I still don't know why you want to go to New York," he grumbled, tossing shirts at you from your closet. You sighed and grabbed each article of clothing he tossed your way and folded them, putting them in your suitcase.
"Because my aunt, who I haven't seen in years, has invited me to stay with her for the summer to get away this nightmare," you explained, for the ump-teenth time, gesturing to the house you'd grown up in. Your parents were going through a messy divorce, and three months away in The City of Dreams seemed like a nice break from that. Dallas smiled as you sipped your bag up, and you smiled as he pulled you back into him. His hands rubbed slowly over your hips.
"But for three months," he whined in your ear, kissing your neck. "It's just too long." You turned to face him and chuckled, wrapping your arms around his neck.
"I'll be back before you know it, Dal," you sighed your fingers playing with the curls at the nape of his neck. He pressed a kiss to his your forehead. You just leaned into him and just breathed in the smell of cigarette smoke and his leather jacket. It was a smell you learned to love in the months since you started dating. He had been your shield, your get away, since your parents started the arduous divorce process.
You were pulled away from Dally when a car honked outside your house. Dally pulled away from you with a frown and glared out the window towards the yellow cab waiting to take you away.
"Come on, Dal," you sighed, taking his hand, "walk me out?" Dallas grabbed your suitcase and wrapped his arm around your shoulders, pressing a kiss to the side of your head. He silently escorted you out t the sidewalk. You waited as he put the suitcase in the trunk and slammed it shut. He leaned against the trunk and stared down at the road. You walked over to stand in front of him, smiling up at him.
"Dal," you started, but stopped when his eyes flicked up from the road under your feet to your eyes. You shared a look and he reached up and pulled his saint Christopher over his head. He let a long sigh out through his nose before offering it to you. "Your Christopher medal?"
"If ya want it," he sighed, trying not to show you he cared one way or the other. "He's the patron saint of travelers. I mean, if you insist on going to that shit city-"
"Which I do," you insisted, pulling the chain down over your head.
"Well then you should go with some sort of protection. Spiritual or otherwise."
"Thank's Dallas," you managed to get out before Dallas pressed his lips against yours. You felt his slip something in your back pocket, but he pulled away from you roughly as the cabie honked again.
"She's comin'," he barked. He turned back to you and smiled. "I also slipped you a knife. Because, Christopher can only take you so far." You smiled and gave him a playfully disapproving look.
"I love you," you said, you eyes going wide when you realized what you had just said. You meant it, you knew you did, but you were afraid Dallas wouldn't feel the same, or worse, he'd resent you being so open with your feelings. But Dally seemed unfazed, like he hadn't heard you say anything, let alone that you loved him. He grabbed your hand and pulled you around to the back door of the cab, pulling it open for you. You let out a nervous sigh and slid into the car. Dally closed the door and leaned in the open window.
"Don't change in New York," he said, leaning a little closer to you. He gently grabbed your face and kissed you again, making your head spin and toes curl. "Because I kind of love ya the way you are." You blushed as Dally pulled out of the cab, slapping it on the roof, telling the cabbie you were ready.

A Second Decade of Movies
Ten years ago on Facebook, I compiled a list of every movie I watched, in order, from the first decade of the network’s existence. Now, here’s part two, covering the years 2010-2019. There are 754 titles below, though some are repeat viewings. The movie I watched the most? Harold Lloyd in “The Freshman.” My favorite movie from the last decade? “The Tree of Life.”
But I began the 2010s with James Cameron’s mega-hit “Avatar.” I’ll go on record saying the movie is still enjoyable ten years later, as I watched it again in 2019 with my kids to prep for visiting the World of Pandora at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. But--I also agree with those who say there’s little remembered from the film in the culture today. Can you name the stars? Recount the plot in detail? Mostly what we remember from the film is the spectacle of it all, game-changing when it was released in 2009.
At any rate, enjoy the list below! If a title is hotlinked, it will take you to an essay, interview, or related coverage on the film by yours truly.

Deputy Blaine
Klaine Advent: Day 4 - Deputy/Paper (Ao3)
“Hi!”
Kurt looked up, startled, to find a very cute boy smiling at him.
He had dark curly hair, styled in waves up and off his forehead. He wore a navy blue button up, tucked into washed cuffed shorts, short sleeves rolled over his defined biceps. His legs led down to an unfortunate pair of boat shoes but back up underneath his face was a charming white bow tie.
And what a face. A jawline like ‘whoa’ – not really sharp but broad and strong, softened by the wide smile dominating his face. The only thing that could possibly distract from such a smile would be his eyes, bright and friendly as fresh honey.
Kurt smiled back at this frankly beautiful boy. Then his eyes registered the clipboard the beautiful boy was holding and his smile faltered.
“Hi! Are you registered to vote here in Austin?”
Kurt let out a long sigh, lowering his phone to the table. He sent a soft look to this guy.
“Hi! No, I’m not.”
The guy’s smile turned up even brighter. “Great! Well, I can get you registered right now so you’re good to vote this November.” He turned his clipboard to Kurt, pushing it into his hands. “Just fill out everything that’s highlighted.”
Kurt took the clipboard more out of instinct than anything. He figured that was probably part of the training – physically handing the person the form to make sure they fill it out.
Kurt looked over the paper, already knowing he wouldn’t be filling it out. He was just visiting, he couldn’t register here when he doesn’t live here.
But Kurt supported the cause and this guy was cute.
Kurt smiled at him, laying the clipboard delicately on the table. “Who are you with?”
“I’m with NewGrade! We’re a non-partisan political organization trying to mobilize youth voters.”
Kurt laughed, teasingly. “Well, I can already tell you’re not non-partisan. Republicans don’t want young people voting.”
The guy smile back, sheepishly. “We are tad… progressive.”
Kurt laughed again. The guy blushed. It was cute.
“What’s your name?” Kurt asked, tilting his head in what he hoped was an enticing way.
The guy reached his hand out, face very open and friendly but not particularly enticed. “My name’s Blaine.”
Kurt took his hand, taking a moment to appreciate the rough firmness of his hands before answering. “Kurt.”
Kurt looked meaningfully at the chair across from him. “Care to have a seat, Blaine?”
Blaine hesitated for just a second before pulling his smile back and taking a seat.
“I’ll be straight with you, Blaine,” Kurt started before snorting and rolling his eyes at himself. “Well, not straight. I’m never straight. But I’ll be up front.”
Blaine laughed, his shoulders losing some tension. He rested his elbows on the table.
“I can’t register to vote. I don’t live here – I’m visiting from New York as part of my grad program.”
Blaine deflated a little but his customer service smile came right back. “Well are you registered in New York?”
“Of course I am, Blaine. I’m gay.”
Blaine laughed again at that but his eyes still looked disappointed.
“Do you have a quota or something, Blaine?”
Blaine sighed, sinking a little further onto his elbows. “Kind of. I’m an organizer, which just means I’m supposed to get volunteers to do my work for me. But my volunteers suck, so I have to get 8 voter registration by the end of their shift.”
Kurt had absolutely no context for whether or not 8 was a lot. He figured when it came to walking up to random strangers in coffee shops it must be.
“Well when’s the end of their shift?”
Blaine checked his watch. “In like an hour and a half.”
“And how many do you have now?”
“Six.”
“Oh,” Kurt scoffed, waving a hand dismissively. “You’ve got plenty of time! For two more?” He scoffed again.
Blaine nodded but blew out a tired breath. “Yeah, but I wanted to do better than 8. Why do what you can overdo, you know?”
Kurt’s mouth quirked up. That was a motto he could get behind.
“I don’t disagree.”
Blaine smiled back, a smaller but more genuine expression than Kurt had seen so far.
“So, how did you get into this?”
Blaine shrugged, looking at his hands. “Grew up in a small town in Ohio. When I volunteered to work polls in 2016 they told me how I could become more involved. I applied for this job and they shipped me out here.”
Kurt nodded, his eyebrows hiked high. “Where in Ohio?”
Blaine winced. “Westerville? It’s near–”
“No shit!” Kurt smacked the table. “You call that small? You’re right by Columbus! Try Lima, now that was small.”
Blaine brightened a bit his eyebrows like triangles hiking up his forehead. “You grew up in Lima? I sang against your glee club!”
Kurt grinned back. “Yeah! So, I mean, hey, Austin’s better than there, right?”
Blaine nodded, but sank back down anyway. “Yeah, it is.”
Kurt leaned forward, poking Blaine in the forehead. “Then why the sad face?”
Blaine blinked, a little startled at the contact, but smiled, sheepishly, rolling his eyes.
“Well, to start, Texas has some of the most awful registration laws of any state. You can’t just print out a registration form and mail it in. You need someone deputized to present it to you.”
Kurt’s eyebrows lifted nearly off his face, his mouth spread into a grin. “Are you telling me you’re a deputy.”
Blaine nodded, miserably.
Kurt put on an affected southern accent. “Well there, I didn’t see a shiny badge on ya! How’m I supposed to know you ain’t one of them city slickers.”
Blaine rolled his eyes. “Yeah.” Blaine paused as Kurt laughed at himself but continued, “And in addition to those jokes, a deputization only counts in one county. Which means I can’t register someone in Dallas even though it’s the same form. And every volunteer I recruit has to be deputized, too. It’s a nightmare.”
Kurt reached forward and patted Blaine’s hands in comfort. Blaine let his happen, looking at Kurt with a curious glint in his eye.
“I’m sorry, Blaine. That sounds rough. I wish I could help!”
Blaine kept looking at him, curiously. “Well… do you know of any better spots where I might get people to register?”
Kurt held up his hands. “Hey, man, I told you: I’m just visiting.” Kurt lowered his hands again, tipping his head in thought. “But, actually, there’s a club meeting happening at the ASFD commons I was invited to. I’m sure not all of those students updated their registration when they moved for school.”
Blaine’s eyes brightened again, his elbows coming off the table as he sat straight up. “Yeah? Do you think you could bring me?”
“That depends,” Kurt looked at him, tilting his head enticingly again. Blaine seemed to be a scoche more enticed. “Will you get coffee with me after?”
Blaine blushed, but nodded.
Kurt grinned, standing up and grabbing his empty mug. “Well then, let’s go. Democracy waits for no one.”

You reblogged a myth and legend post about taking care. Do you have anything you believe in, or any stories about things you couldn't explain that happened to you, to add?
I grew up in pretty much bum fuck nowhere, so I’d be surprised with myself if I didn’t have a healthy suspicion of things in the dark. Where I live now, my flat occasionally has ghosts visiting (thankfully they just pass through, were really close to crossroads and have apparently an excellent hallway for moving through). But I have a very firm no ghost policy unless it’s the Ghost Cats, they can stay. Which is probably a good thing because I keep bumping into them (like my vacation to London…) But other than the one ghost we had to deal with for far longer than I enjoyed, it’s actually my twin who has come the closest to running into something.
We lived in the middle of the country, and she and her BFF where driving to Texas to visit her friend’s family. The particular stretch of road they were driving was flat, and I don’t know how familiar you are with Texas, but some parts are just open. Flat and open and a straight fucking line forever or until you hit the next city. They knew exactly how long it would take them to get from point C to point D, because they were driving at night. They’d been driving for the entirety of the evening, and at 10pm there isn’t much traffic (see: possibly any) on the roads.
Now, when you think of highways, you think of four lane road monstrosities. But you also have to remember in rural areas two lane roads are also considered major road ways. It just depends. Sure, Dallas is a nightmare and so is I-35, but Texas is a big fucking state.
They leave a perfectly respectful town and they stopped for gas and snacks before they have to head out into the giant blank space between this town and a major city in Texas. They get a few miles outside of said town and they see it.
There is a house on the side of the road. I was told it was fucking impossible to miss because it was lit up like the sun. There were what could have been multiple spotlights directed solely onto the house, illuminating it to the point of it been near daylight. It was so well lit there were no shadows, just light everywhere. It was a beacon. An invitation. And it was so, so wrong.
The twin being a reasonable person, tells the driver to floor it. And the BFF, being the person that she is goes, yup. So there they are, cruising down this road and they just keep driving. And driving. And driving. They realize something is shit is still wrong because they should have already reached this giant city according to their timelime but they can’t even see city lights yet. They check the map on their phones multiple times to make sure they didn’t actually divert somewhere else on accident even though it is a straight line to where they are going and there are no other roads. Nope. Right on track. A to B. A single road going in a single direction.
At this point they both agree that under no circumstances will they stop until they hit a town.
They finally hit the next town, and then the next, and they arrive at their destination two hours later than they should have. Driving the road they were at that time of night, it was physically impossible to have lost two hours. They call it the Bermuda Triangle of Texas now and they don’t take that route to visit family anymore.
Fun fact: they did take the same route back home a few days later. They are suspicious people (bless them for not getting eaten) so they time it. The trip back is two hours shorter than the trip going and there is no house with the sun to be found anywhere. They know exactly what it looks like and roughly where it should be but during the day it just didn’t exist.

Most Popular Artificial Grass Installations
Tumblr media
Artificial Grass
Artificial turf is a durable, low-maintenance alternative to conventional grass lawns. It is increasing in popularity for use in front yards, backyards, play areas, dog runs, and other artificial grass installations.
7 MOST POPULAR ARTIFICIAL GRASS INSTALLATIONS
Residential artificial grass can go many areas from large lawns, dog runs, and pool surrounds. There’s no space too big or too small that can’t be improved with premium artificial turf from The Perfect Lawn. While artificial grass installations have many uses, the most popular seven are listed below.
ARTIFICIAL LAWNS
Artificial grass can help transform your yard into a luscious green maintenance-free lawn year round. Our durable and long-lasting turf helps save you time and money spent watering, mowing, weeding and fertilizing. Additionally, realistic artificial grass, like what we install at The Perfect Lawn, looks so natural your neighbors won’t know the difference. As a hypoallergenic and eco-friendly alternative to regular grass, an artificial lawn is an ideal choice for many.
In addition to cutting down on water usage, you also reduce your contribution to pollution. This is because you won’t be using a lawnmower that spews gasoline vapors and exhaust fumes. From maintenance, sprinklers, pest control, and winterizing savings alone, artificial grass more than pays for itself. This is especially true in areas such as Dallas, where residents spend thousands to keep lawns healthy every year.
SYNTHETIC PUTTING GREENS
Many golf enthusiasts would love nothing more than to be able to step outside their back door straight onto their very own putting green. Backyard golf and putting greens are great fun and the popularity is growing at an incredible rate, especially in big cities such as Dallas. Installing a turf putting green on your property require expert design and installation techniques. The Perfect Lawn has the necessary industry experience and expertise in artificial grass installations for backyard golf and putting greens.
ARTIFICIAL GRASS GARDENS
Using artificial grass for your garden offers you a practical solution to constant lawn care and allows other plants to flourish nearby. A lesser-known benefit to artificial grass is that it acts as a barrier to pests. Flower and vegetable gardens surrounded by artificial grass do not have real grass nearby for pests to hide and grow in. For this reason, both amateur and professional gardeners benefit from artificial grass installations as a healthier and safer alternative to pest control and harsh chemicals.
ARTIFICIAL TURF PLAYGROUNDS
Artificial turf is a great way to create a fun and inviting look in a play area. While artificial grass serves as an aesthetic upgrade, it can also contribute to the safety of your little ones. Artificial turf for playgrounds is much more soft and safe than grass or wood chips. With artificial grass installation from The Perfect Lawn, your kids will be provided with a safe, eco-friendly play area that requires neither chemical use nor watering.
SPORTS SURFACING
Another popular use for artificial turf is for sports surfacing. In fact, artificial grass was originally created for use in sports pitches. This is because sports fields receive frequent, heavy use that regular grass would require a lot to maintain. Artificial grass installations allow athletes to play to the best of their abilities without the risk of injury. Whether you are wanting a turf field for soccer, football or other backyard sports, artificial grass is best for sports surfacing.
SYNTHETIC TURF DOG RUNS
One of the most popular artificial grass installations is for dogs and pets. There are plenty of reasons to choose artificial pet turf for your backyard or dog run. Artificial grass installations are a safe, low-maintenance option that is easy to clean and requires no chemicals. Urine scorched turf and bald patches of grass doesn’t make for a lawn that is particularly pleasing on the eye. With free draining synthetic grass installation, the large amounts of urine drain straight through the grass. This creates a much healthier environment for dogs to play in and less maintenance for the owners.
Additionally, muddy paws and mess don’t make for an easy life indoors. This quickly becomes a nightmare, particularly in winter months or after periods of heavy rainfall that can turn your real lawn into a mud bath. Pet owners who have had to scrub mud out of their carpet and floors, or take the time to wipe their dog’s paws every time they come inside will appreciate the mud-free environment of artificial grass installation.
ARTIFICIAL GRASS FOR POOL AREAS
Splashing, diving, playing, and climbing in and out of the pool can quickly introduce a lot of water and damage the ground around your pool. Too much water is not good for grass or most plants, but an artificial grass lawn can handle excessive water just fine. The permeable backing also allows the water to properly drain so that you do not have to worry about puddles. Additionally, artificial turf is less likely to become slippery when wet. Which helps to increase the safety of your children, pets and guests. As an added bonus, our manufactured grass will not get muddy from all of that extra water; whereas, natural grass surely would.

icarus ( D004. )
❝ Please don't take my sunshine away. ❞
- - -
She wasn’t allowed to be happy.
There were some people who were spun from sunshine — radiant and warm and bathed in a golden glow that touched anyone who was fortunate enough to be in their presence. Madisyn Blake was not one of those people.
For a brief moment, she’d touched the sun and felt how beautiful it could be; how safe and blinding. If happiness was the sun than she was Icarus. She’d gotten just close enough for it to melt the wax from her wings and send her toppling back down to Earth. Some things just weren’t meant to be touched — and she was one of them.
Over time she’d become proficient at building walls around her heart — great towering barriers that kept anyone out who dare tried to threaten what she had so desperately protected. And then, of course, there had been Trenton Dallas. The light that she hadn’t realized that she had so desperately needed. He was like the spring after a particularly harsh winter — cold at first and then it melted away to remind you of what you’d been missing out on when it was all covered with ice. But that was Madisyn, wasn’t it? Her entire life was covered in ice.
It had taken everything for her to let the walls down and invite someone in, especially someone who it seemed had been designed specifically for the purpose of destroying everything that she had worked to defend herself against. Everything about her was bound to make her bleed — from his smile to the specks on his cheeks that decorated his skin and made him so imperfectly handsome and indescribably dangerous.
He was tragic and broken but she hadn’t wanted to fix him, she’d wanted to lay beside him and hold his hand as if it would hold him together — she’d wanted him to know that he wasn’t alone. They both had their cracks and they were both made of fragments that didn’t really belong anywhere but with each other. Somehow, they’d made each other complete…like the world’s most fucked up jigsaw puzzle made of ice — or shattered glass. It exploded in her face like fucking shattered glass.
Jude’s voice had sounded as if she were hearing it from underwater, muffled and distant as she strained to focus and catch her breath in a place where there wasn’t any air. It seemed ironic now that she was speeding toward the hospital in her hand-me-down hearse as if she were the grim reaper and not Trent’s girlfriend; like she was going to throw him into the back and toss him into a shallow grave. “I’m here to stay, Madi.” She should have known better.
All she could picture in her mind was the wakes that her father held downstairs — lines of women in black with tear-stained cheeks as endless waves of empty humans gave them half-hearted hugs and solemn nods. “I’m sorry for your loss. I’m sorry for your loss.” They didn’t understand that you lost so much more than a person…they didn’t understand that you lost such a giant chunk of your heart.
She hadn’t said a word to him since she’d arrived at the hospital — dark, liquid hues transfixed upon horrendous blinds that blocked away the lights of the city at night. His sobs felt like white noise; static sound like when you shut off the DVD player before the television and it screamed back at you in protest. Madisyn couldn’t think or feel. It felt like a nightmare. He just couldn’t fucking let her be happy.
“I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.” He repeated it like someone had accidentally left him looping, the apology as vacant as they sounded at those goddamn fucking wakes. She wanted to scream at him, take a swing at him — maybe even toss her cup of coffee into his face and hope to fucking hell that it hurt him even just half as much as she was hurting right now. Jude, of course, felt that he understood. Through his tears and apologies and choking on his own ego — it had to be about him. He couldn’t just let them fucking be happy. He could say it all that he wanted but she still couldn’t bring herself to look at him.
Her expression was blank and devoid of any real reaction — her chest tight and empty as if it were struggling to hold onto something that was no longer present. Unblinking, her fingers moved to pick away at the polish that decorated her nails, barely audible as she finally broke the silence. “You know I never said it back?” She spoke to the air as if he weren’t present, addressing nothing and no one like a dark soliloquy. “He stood in front of me and told me that I’m the first and last thing that he ever thinks about. He said that he was here to stay…he wasn’t like my mom who could just toss me out. He looked at me and told me that he’s in love with me…and I never fucking said it back.”

This post was inspired by Ally’s series (which was inspired by Lia at Lost in a Story).
It works like this
Go to your Goodreads to-read shelf.
Order on ascending date added.
Take the first 5 (or 10 (or even more!) if you’re feeling adventurous) books
Read the synopsis of the books
Decide: keep it or should it go?
The Kiss of Deception (The Remnant Chronicles #1) by Mary E. Pearson
In a society steeped in tradition, Princess Lia’s life follows a preordained course. As First Daughter, she is expected to have the revered gift of sight—but she doesn’t—and she knows her parents are perpetrating a sham when they arrange her marriage to secure an alliance with a neighboring kingdom—to a prince she has never met.
On the morning of her wedding, Lia flees to a distant village. She settles into a new life, hopeful when two mysterious and handsome strangers arrive—and unaware that one is the jilted prince and the other an assassin sent to kill her. Deception abounds, and Lia finds herself on the brink of unlocking perilous secrets—even as she finds herself falling in love.
The Kiss of Deception is the first audiobook in Mary E. Pearson’s Remnant Chronicles
Date added to TBR:Jul 31, 2016 Keep or Ditch?Keep Comments: I actually have the boxed set of this entire series. I love the covers and those are honestly what drew me to them. I definitely want to keep this one.
Dangerous Girls by Abigail Haas
It’s Spring Break of senior year. Anna, her boyfriend Tate, her best friend Elise, and a few other close friends are off on a debaucherous trip to Aruba that promises to be the time of their lives. But when Elise is found brutally murdered, Anna finds herself trapped in a country not her own, fighting against vile and contemptuous accusations.
As Anna sets out to find her friend’s killer, she discovers hard truths about her friendships, the slippery nature of truth, and the ache of young love.
As she awaits the judge’s decree, it becomes clear that everyone around her thinks she is not just guilty, but dangerous. When the truth comes out, it is more shocking than one could ever imagine…
Date added to TBR:Jul 31, 2016 Keep or Ditch?Keep Comments:I actually really want to read more psychological thrillers and this one sounds pretty awesome. It also is very highly rated on Goodreads.
Confess by Colleen Hoover
Auburn Reed is determined to rebuild her shattered life and she has no room for mistakes. But when she walks into a Dallas art studio in search of a job, she doesn’t expect to become deeply attracted to the studio’s enigmatic artist, Owen Gentry.
For once, Auburn takes a chance and puts her heart in control, only to discover that Owen is hiding a huge secret. The magnitude of his past threatens to destroy everything Auburn loves most, and the only way to get her life back on track is to cut Owen out of it—but can she do it?
Date added to TBR: Jul 31, 2016 Keep or Ditch?Keep Comments:I honestly don’t even need to read the synopsis, I plan to read everything Colleen Hoover writes.
Truly Madly Guilty by Liane Moriarty
Six responsible adults. Three cute kids. One small dog. It’s just a normal weekend. What could possibly go wrong?
Sam and Clementine have a wonderful, albeit, busy life: they have two little girls, Sam has just started a new dream job, and Clementine, a cellist, is busy preparing for the audition of a lifetime. If there’s anything they can count on, it’s each other.
Clementine and Erika are each other’s oldest friends. A single look between them can convey an entire conversation. But theirs is a complicated relationship, so when Erika mentions a last minute invitation to a barbecue with her neighbors, Tiffany and Vid, Clementine and Sam don’t hesitate. Having Tiffany and Vid’s larger than life personalities there will be a welcome respite.
Two months later, it won’t stop raining, and Clementine and Sam can’t stop asking themselves the question: What if we hadn’t gone?
In Truly Madly Guilty, Liane Moriarty takes on the foundations of our lives: marriage, sex, parenthood, and friendship. She shows how guilt can expose the fault lines in the most seemingly strong relationships, how what we don’t say can be more powerful than what we do, and how sometimes it is the most innocent of moments that can do the greatest harm.

Family Friendly Alternatives to Trick-or-Treating

Family Friendly Alternatives to Trick-or-Treating
Can’t go Trick or Treat this year? Not to worry! We’ve got lots of fun way to help celebrate Halloween with your family at home!
What Are Family-Friendly Alternatives to Trick or Treating?
Ghouls, ghosts, goblins and more, if you’re excited about the upcoming holiday, you’re not alone. An estimated 175 million Americans will celebrate Halloween this year. But not everyone who loves Halloween enjoys trick-or-treating.
Whether it’s simply not your thing, the weather’s bad, the kids have colds, or you want to kick back and relax this year, then you need some fun alternatives to trick-or-treating with your family. Here are five ways you can celebrate Halloween with your family in the comfort of your own Dallas home.
Halloween Hunt
Take miniature pumpkins and have the family decorate them with either watercolors or paints before the holiday. Once they’ve had time to dry, you can hide the pumpkins around the house and then have the kids dress up in their costumes and hunt for them. Plastic pumpkins stuffed with the best treats make for a great alternative as well.
 Halloween Party
Halloween parties are a great way to keep the fun at home and still have a great time. You can keep it in the family or invite neighbors over to join. Decorate the house with colored lights and creepy items, grab costumes, and bring out the games. A Halloween piñata packed full of candy or a few rounds of bobbing for apples always make for a great time (try bobbing for donuts if you want to sweeten things up).
Haunted House
Don’t want to have a party? Why not visit a haunted house instead? Depending on the age of those in your family, you can either create one at home for the younger ones or find one in your neighborhood or city. Check out these haunted houses in the Dallas area. You can take the family out for a night full of fright.
Scary Movie Festival
One of the best experiences of Halloween is that you have a long list of fun fright movies to choose from. So, why choose only one? Grab the family and settle in for back to back classics such as Harry Potter, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Coraline, and many others. Want to make the night more festive? Put on costumes and bring out some tasty Halloween snacks too!
Hand Out Candy at Home
Giving out candy can be just as fun as getting it. Have the family dress up and hang out at home, waiting for trick-or-treaters to stop by. You can get to see all the great costumes and make other children smile as you hand out candy through the night. To make it more festive, try throwing in some games, a movie, or even pumpkin decorating to occupy time between visitors.
Happy Halloween from TER
However you choose to celebrate the holiday with your family, remember that you can find more savings for more great times by choosing the cheapest energy rates for your home. While it can be confusing, comparing Dallas electric rates doesn’t have to be. Take advantage of power to choose and visit www.TexasElectricityRatings.com for more information. You’ll find expert tips on how to compare, shop, and switch to the best electricity plan for your household’s needs. Have a happy Halloween!

Augmented Reality Apps for Tourism
Imagine taking a lengthy backpacking trip through Europe with an interactive map of all the cathedrals, museums, castles and other landmarks, complete with information on the cultural significance of each location—all at your fingertips. Augmented reality (AR) has made this a reality. The technology adds digital layers of data to real-world images viewed via a smartphone, helping users gain a more comprehensive appreciation of their surroundings without a cumbersome, physical brochure.

The goal of augmented reality in tourism is to offer travelers additional guidance and entertainment options as they explore new terrain. The first travel app to incorporate AR was Tuscany+, which labeled itself as an “interactive, real-time guide” to help with navigation and cultural learning.
Since then, more and more companies have found ways to improve the tourist experience with augmented reality apps, including unorthodox cases such as Pokemon GO encouraging people to get off their couches and find digital creatures in surrounding areas. AR technology has evolved plenty since its early days, with augmented reality apps for tourism now offering some of the most sophisticated capabilities for travelers.
Picking the Right Hotel
You can read all the reviews in the world about a hotel, but you won’t know what the place is actually like until you get there. Thankfully, AR apps now make it possible for travelers to check out the digs without physically being there in the form of virtual 3D tours of hotels.
Some hotels allow you to examine various room options via the tour, as well as features such as swimming pools, gyms, bars and restaurants. These apps also give users a solid idea of restaurants, entertainment and other tourist attractions near the hotel.
One such hotel that offers an augmented reality app is the Mansion at Casa Madrona in California. The app has been successful in helping the property attract more guests by displaying its amenities and offering them a more personalized experience with accommodations to suit their needs.
Hotels can benefit greatly from the use of augmented reality apps to showcase what’s inside them. Essentially, these apps serve as marketing tools that improve a hotel’s reputation and attract customers.
Finding the Best Route to Your Destination
Traveling used to be a logistical nightmare, as you would have to buy guides with updated bus departure and arrival times, routes and information on the local traffic. Even if you planned your trip to a tee, you might end up on the wrong bus or miss your bus altogether.
App developers have now made it easier to figure out how to get around when traveling. For example, Mapway Limited developed Bus Times London. This app uses augmented reality to create a digital path to your destination through a live feed on your smartphone’s camera. It’s a similar idea to regular mapping apps, but you can see the route in front of you with a higher degree of accuracy.
The app is quite intuitive, as it creates a path that begins with your real-time position, then follows a line that includes a red icon that marks your bus stop. You can also find buses by following the path, and Bus Times London adjusts your path if you deviate from it, finding alternate ways to reach your destination.
While we already have apps for bus routes in certain metropolitan areas, there is a lot of potential to expand this idea to other cities, towns and countries thanks to the magic of AR. With this technology, you can give travelers a good idea of traffic conditions, the weather, bus and train routes and real-time alerts to enhance their itineraries, all in one screen.
Breaking Down Language Barriers
Perhaps the biggest challenge of entering a foreign country is attempting to get a grasp of the language in a short period of time. Many people will buy a traveler’s guide to the city in order to learn common phrases and hand gestures. However, even with these guides, you will still experience difficulty when you encounter a situation you did not anticipate.
Common language barrier issues when traveling abroad include not knowing what to order in a restaurant because you can’t read the language or not knowing if you’re on the right street because you can’t read the signs. AR can now help with such conundrums, as companies like Google have developed advanced translation apps that leverage the technology.
The Google Translate app makes it easy to translate a word into English from another language or vice versa. Nevertheless, the app won’t help if you see a sign in Japanese that you’re unable to translate because you don’t know how to type it in. Enter Word Lens, an extension of the Translate app. This app lets users snap a picture of a foreign language on the streets, on a menu or elsewhere, then the app immediately translates it into the language of your choosing. The app isn’t perfect just yet, but it can handle live translations in 30 languages.
In this case, augmented reality is combined with object identification and translation technology to tackle the language barrier issues that plague travelers. These apps represent one of many ways you can use AR to create a better connection between tourists and locals, allowing users to gain a deeper appreciation of other cultures while also enjoying a hassle-free trip.
Augmented Reality Apps for Tourism: Changing the Face of Travel
With the help of augmented reality, you can help travelers enjoy a tourist experience with mobile apps that cover everything from booking a hotel room to navigating their surroundings to translating foreign languages. AR offers endless business opportunities for companies interested in advancing their position in the tourism industry, attracting customers and increasing their bottom line.
If you’re hoping to implement augmented reality technology into your tourism app, you will need a developer with the talent and experience to help you achieve your goals.
