Ralsei and Susie: the burden of fate (part 3)

Ralsei and Susie's friendship development focuses on an interesting thing in chapter 4: fate.

Or more specifically, the prophecy.

As everyone else pointed out before, Ralsei's been acting kinda sus this entire game.

And as it turns out, Susie noticed it too.

She let him be the first few times he kept crucial information from her until the last second, but when she realized he knew that she couldn't see the old man if she opens a new dark fountain or even take him to castle town, she reached her limit..

And just like that, Susie voiced the thoughts of the entire fandom.

It makes sense that this is her breaking point, because she just found out that her mentor and friend was dead and (as far as she knows) she will never see him again. She didn't even get to tell him proper goodbye.

People have been speculating about Ralsei's tendency to hide things for years.

Is he evil? Is he working with Gaster? Could it be that he thinks that everyone knows what he does so he doesn't feel the need to say it? And why doesn't he get petrified like other dark worlds like other darkners?

While we didn't get an answer to some of these questions, we learned something very important about him.

Ralsei isn't some mastermind trying to hide things from the player or his friends for the sake of some grand plan, he's just a kid trying his best to protect his friends from the burden he has to carry.

Ralsei knew everything (kinda) that was going to happen before we even met him. And he seemed to be at peace with it.

He kept talking about fate, destiny and purpose.

It was Kris and Susie's fate to save the worlds, and it was his purpose to serve them.

But Susie, from the very beginning went "nah, that's bullshit."

Ralsei thought that he knew everything that was going to happen, but from their very first interaction, Susie proved him wrong.

Except that back then, it didn't come from strength, but of a lack of self worth.

After a lifetime of being told that she can never be anything more than a trouble maker, Susie immediately rejected Ralsei's words that she can be a hero.

And throughout chapter one, she kept rejecting this role, almost like the classic "refusal of the call" in the hero's journey.

Susie heard that Ralsei expected her to be a hero, and decided to nip it in the bud. Because all she saw was another authority figure that would end up dissapointed in her once she fails to be whatever they wanted her to be.

That's exactly why she refused to solve puzzles before and why she doesn't bother at school.

Susie thought that she isn't smart.

But she IS.

She thought that she wasn't heroic.

But she is.

She just didn't believe that she was so she refused to even try...until she found someone she cared about enough to try for.

By admiring Susie for all the traits others rejected her for, Lancer made Susie want to become a person worthy of this admiration.

And after Susie saw what she was capable of doing, and how rewarding it is, she accepted her role in the prophecy.

But ionically, the more Susie started to accept the prophecy, the less Ralsei wanted it to come true.

And the difference in his attitude is due to what in my opinion is in the last line of the prophecy. (Not my own theory, just the best one I saw about it).

Ralsei believed that he wasn't a person, therefore, his initial peace with his final fate makes sense.

But thanks to Kris and especially Susie, he started to believe that he mattered.

Susie learned that she's more than she thought she was, and applied the same principle to Ralsei.

And this made him less and less willing to accept his end.

Both for his sake as he found out that he liked living, and for Susie's, who clearly sees him as an equal and as a friend and wouldn't be able to handle his death, especially by her hand.

But he didn't believe that anything they'd do would make a difference, especially at the church world where the prophecy remained unchanged no matter what route the player took.

And saying it, acknowledging it, gives it weight. Makes it more real, makes it harder to deny.

And makes the burden Ralsei sees as his alone fall on the shoulders of the ones he cares about, too.

So even though he promised to be more honest, his resolve to keep the ending of the prophecy to himself was stronger than ever.

But of course, we all know how that went.

Ralsei was so scared of this moment, of the pain it'd inflict on her, of the despair and hopelessness that would replace the shining hope he saw in his friend.

But just like so many times before, Susie kept surprising him.

Just like in the beginning of chapter one, Susie rejected the prophecy, but this time it wasn't because she thought that she wasn't good enough, but because she believed in herself and her own strength.

Susie's resolve, her determination and her hope....it even got someone as fatalistic as Ralsei to believe that things can be different.

But the saddest part is, that despite the nonchalant attitude she displayed around Ralsei, Susie isn't very sure in her words.

But at the moment Ralsei ran to her, all apologetic and scared and worried, Susie knew what he needed to hear.

So she took a page out of his own book.

And now they switched part, with Ralsei being hopeful, and Susie resolving to take upon herself the burden of fate.

THARGELIA:

coming up on may 4-5th 2025 (according to hellenion’s calendar) is the festival of Thargelia, dedicated to Artemis and Apollon. this post aims to very briefly go over the history of the festival and suggest some ways for modern hellenic polytheists to celebrate. (disclaimer: i am not an expert, nor an authority. my sources are cited at the end of the post. im just a nerd about ancient history)

WHAT IS THARGELIA?

Thargelia is an festival celebrated in Athens and many Ionic cities that takes place on the 6th and 7th of the Athenian month Thargelion. it is said that Artemis was born on the 6th and Apollon on the 7th, which is why the 6th/7th of each month is devoted to them. in the month of Thargelion, a special festival occurs that celebrates the first fruits of the harvest and purifies the city on these dates.

HOW WAS THARGELIA CELEBRATED?

This section will talk about Athens primarily, as it has the most sources. On the first day, the 6th of Thargelion, two pharmakoi ['loathsome' men, usually of lower status, that had previously been chosen to represent the Athenian men and women respectively as 'scapegoats' and taken care of by the polis until thargelia] were adorned in figs, processed around the city, then beaten with branches and driven out of the polis. Some scholars speculate they were treated more harshly than this at one time. This is a purification ritual -- "purification as a prerequisite of the new beginning" (Burkert 83). It also may perhaps focused on averting disease, as "the averter of threatening dangers is Apollo" (Burkert 265). For more on scapegoat rituals, see Bremmer's "Scapegoat Rituals in Ancient Greece."

Additionally, a ram was also sacrificed on the 6th to Demeter Chloe [Blooming; First, Green Shoots]; Burkert, however, suggests that "the harvest festival proper, thalysia, which cannot be fixed in the calendar, is a private celebration at which, amid much eating and drinking, Demeter and Dionysos are duly remembered in prayer and vows" (265). The presence of Demeter at this festival can be explained by its ties to the agricultural year, which rites of Demeter (at least loosely) link to. The second day is a day of celebration. Offerings were made to Apollon as a protector of the fields. An offering called the thargelos was prepared, which was a boiled grain dish or a form of bread. Children processed through the streets collecting gifts bearing an eiresione, a olive branch decorated with wool, breads, fruits, and little oil flasks. There was also a choral contest of men and boys, in which the winner was given a tripod to dedicate to Apollon in his nearby temple. It is also customary to introduce new members of the family on this day in honor of Apollon Patroos [Father; Ancestral God].

MODERN CELEBRATION: these are simply my suggestions on ways to celebrate this festival in the modern day; they are not hard and fast rules, instead only meant to give people ideas on ways to celebrate. i am approaching this from a recon lens and suggesting historically based offerings, but i always suggest you give what you have and are able to. adapt as you need for your circumstances!

On the 6th of Thargelion:

-Purification of the self and the home. Good day to clean and remove unwanted things. Purify with whatever method you prefer; I like the LABRYS Household Worship purification ritual.

-Make offerings to Artemis and Apollon for purification. Suggested offerings include libations of water, wine, olive oil, milk and honey, cakes, and breads. Historical hymn suggestions for Artemis are Homeric Hymns 9 and 27; Orphic Hymn 35; Callimachus Hymn 3. Historical hymn suggestions for Apollon are Homeric Hymns 3 (or a section of 3), 21, and 25; Orphic Hymn 33; Callimachus Hymn 2. -Make offerings to Demeter Chloe. Suggested offerings are water, olive oil, milk and honey, cakes and breads, fruits/vegetables, and votive offerings of rams. Votive offerings of rams can be drawn or sculpted out of clay and then destroyed (if desired). Historical hymn suggestions are Homeric Hymns 2 (or a section of 2) and 13; Orphic Hymn 39; Calimachus Hymn 6. On the 7th of Thargelion: -Make an eiresione. Things like yarn and beads can be used to decorate it. Get creative and have fun with it! Olive branches are traditional, but I personally like to incorporate my local ecology since olive trees don't grow where I live.

-Write a prayer, poem, or play music in honor of Apollon.

-Make offerings to Artemis and Apollon, especially under the epithets Alexikakos [Averter of Evil] or Patroos. Suggested offerings: breads or cakes to represent the thargelos, fruits/vegetables (especially those coming into season), libations of water, wine, olive oil, or milk and honey. Byakuya's character is so interesting to me because it's clear he's smart, very smart even. However, his strength is clearly business related. He was able to make 4 billion from day trading in what seems to be a short time.

But the thing is, Byakuya himself doesn't fully seem to grasp this. At least, not the fact that he isn't the best in everything. And that's because up to HPA and the killing game, he simply was the best at everything. Everything that mattered in his world at least.

Before going to HPA, all that mattered was his business skills. He was training to take over the company, and that was what he was good at. He didn't make any mistakes because this was what he was meant to be good at.

As such, it only made sense he would be good at everything, right? Because he was good at everything he did in his life at that point. He had never been in a situation where skills mattered that he didn't have- that was simply not the way his life worked.

That is why we see him like we do in Chapter 4. It's why we get his ionic 'How can you know what I don't know?' line because up to that point, he did know everything. He knew everything that mattered in his world. And that was the only worls hew interacted with.

you ever think about the fact that Anakin has fought Dooku more than Obi-Wan has? like, Anakin has fought Dooku 7 times in over the course of the series, while Obi-Wan has a minuscule 3 and a 1/2 to 4 fights total. and that’s just the movies and the clone wars tv show, not any comic or book fights

starting with attack of the clones, Anakin and Obi-Wan each get one

then there’s the clone wars movie, which gives Anakin 2

then Anakin fights Dooku on Naboo for a total of 3 to Obi-Wan’s 1

next is when Dooku set-up a fake dinner to kidnap Palpatine, which gives Anakin 4 and Obi-Wan… well this is where it’s up to you and how pedantic you wish to be, cause Obi-Wan shows up just in time to help Anakin get Palpatine off of Dooku’s ship, but he didn’t really fight Dooku then and he wasn’t present for the fight up until that point, so it’s a 1/2 point for clashing lightsabers once and a full point if you’re pedantic and say that any lightsaber blade clash is grounds for a fight

point total: Anakin 4 Obi-Wan 1 and a 1/2 to 2

next is their battle with Dooku on the Pyke Syndicate home world, which is 5 for Anakin and 2 and a 1/2 to 3 for Obi-Wan

followed by Yoda’s vision, where Anakin fights Dooku alone for a total of 6 fights in Anakin’s favor

and then we all know the ionic Revenge of the Sith fight, bringing Anakin’s score to a grand total of 7 and Obi-Wan’s to 3 and a 1/2 to 4

there’s one comic in which Obi-Wan fights Dooku with a Jedi named Tiplee, which I didn’t count cause I don’t know enough about the comics, but if you want to count it, it brings Obi-Wan up to 4 and a 1/2 to 5. still low in comparison to Anakin

like, it’s weird how Anakin and Obi-Wan vs Dooku is so ionic, and it only happened 3 times in canon, 4 with being pedantic. it makes me laugh every time I think about it

chemistry chapter rating. i am so lost that i dont even remember the order of these my brain has turned to mush

1) atomic orbitals: 10000/10. do not ask why quantum phys got the kys in my last rating. this is different.

2) electron configuration/periodic table: 8.5/10 pretty cute but feels like a fucking chore sometimes. i have to write out the aufbau diagram each time because i cant remember shit

3) intermolecular forces: 10/10 literally just silly little understandable theory about electric dipoles i should not have even listed this as a chapter. deeply unserious. does not even show up in like 90% of the final exams

4) thermochemistry: 0/10 what is the point of you?

5) chemical kinetics: 2/10 made up

6) chemical equilibrium: 9/10 le chatelier is my bias

7) electrolytes-ionic equilibrium: -∞/10KILL YOURSELF

8) redox reactions-electrolysis: 5/10 leaves me indifferent. boring. tedious. whatever

9) organic chemistry: [REDACTED]/10 you know i started off the year with an intense passionate hatred for organic chemistry. it made me cry. it make me have multiple breakdowns. i could not solve shit. stoichiometry problems were making me bordeline homicidal and suicidal at the same time. haloform reactions drove me past the "borderline". but you know. now that i have experienced ionic equilibrium. looking back at ochem. sitting on my desk and solving little mixture problems. it feels like seeing an old friend. an annoying friend perhaps. a friend you talked shit about behind their back. a friend you would gladly ghost permanently, given the chance. but they are still a friend. and after all this hardship, they see you, and they offer their hand. and you take it. and you hold it. and suddenly the friend is not so annoying anymore. suddenly you feel disgust for your past actions and thoughts. you have been exposed to the evils of the world and you have now come to realize that you were actively contributing to them. no more. no more

Bringing back the old taken king exotic class items as randomly rolled exotics that can be paired with other exotics. Are some of these effects broken, probably, but I don't develop the game, so I wouldn't know. Also, the column two effect will always work, even if you don't have the other exotic that the class item is lifebound too. Good luck with grinding out and getting all 16 combos of each!

Using arc nade {including eating it with getaway} grants a Cataclysmic Storm buff for 6 secs, increasing grenade regen by 150%. Arc kills while the buff is active grants bolt charge and extends it by 4 seconds, up to 20. If you throw another grenade, buff will stack to x2|x3, granting 225%|333% increased grenade regen. Insurmountable is just like the titan Exotic, full melee energy on arc melee kill {bout to go WILD on prismatic}. Blight is blight ranger, cancel either arc super now, and doing it with either will create blinding explosions and tier 4 arc weapon damage increase.)

This is THE 'to-read' paper if you want to understand the physiological basis behind PEM from activity (Scheibenbogen is one of the authors).

PEM (post-exertional malaise) is a confusing concept for patients but it is not a black box. We do know a lot about what is going on and we definitely know enough to say this this process should not be triggered and this needs to be a priority.

The summary

ACTIVITY LEADS TO:

1. The accumulation of lactate, ROS, and the deprivation of cellular energy sources.

This occurs every time we hit 'go' and perform an activity. If we dont have the juice to complete this activity safely - we get into a cycle where metabolic demand continues to increase and exercise capacity keeps declining. If we keep going and going this cycle get worse and ROS starts damaging the mitochondria.

Practically this means that all future activities would take WAY more energy than they would previously if done at a pre-PEM baseline. The activity at the beginning would use normalish amounts of energy and produce normalish amounts of lactate/ROS etc. just as long as kept under the threshold but further activities would use WAY MORE ENERGY and produce MORE ROS and lactate than they should.

2. The DELAYED EFFECTS which include symptoms getting worse are due to triggering "immunometabolic downstream effects".

This means that the above changes have far reaching consequences on OTHER SYSTEMS FUNCTIONS. Those damaged mitochondria start to effect other basic functions like our immune function and our metabolic function.

3. In a final nail in the coffin the "immunometabolic dysfunction" then triggers problems with ionic imbalance (electrolytes) and triggers more muscle activation, mitochondrial damage, and immune responses.

4. Exceeding already reduced activity capacities enters affected patients into a recurrent and self-propagating loop.

Saying we dont understand PEM and that it is a black box is wrong. We understand a lot. We dont need more information to know that this process should NOT be triggered.
