I figured out why everything's shit actually. I realized that Internet sludge content is overwhelmingly targeted at children. This seems obvious but I just didn't fully understand before that there are thousands and thousands of content creators deliberately creating content targeted at children. I don't mean 9-12 y/o's, I mean they are creating sludge content for 5, 6, 7 y/o's, and younger.

Why so?

Well, never before have children this young been marketed to so effectively. Because every child is given an iPad out of the womb, and these devices have become very easy to use, the children immediately become a very reliable source of clicks, in fact the most reliable source out of all demographics. Little kids watch the same content over and over and because they don't work (or even go to school in the case of under-5's), they have more than enough time during the entire day to view content online. And they do. Parents are happy about it, it keeps the kids quiet. Not only that, but I'm pretty sure that some of their parents are literally pre-loading credit cards into their kid's phone for them to spend on mobile games. So now you have a situation where 3-6 y/o children have access to a line of real money to buy apps, buy gems and other monetized shit on games, and pay for content (a limited amount for most cases I hope but I'm sure there are higher income parents who don't even think about this and just link a credit card with a high limit). A whole group of people that has never before been consumers.

Sure, kids have been marketed to in the past. I'm talking about toy commercials. You would see the latest toy in a commercial on Cartoon Network and then beg your parents to buy it for you. Ultimately, they controlled the purchase decision. Not so now. Little kids now have the money and the ability to choose to pay for content, which causes social media and influencers to target them with predatory marketing. Kids that young cannot understand when they're being advertised to, it's a completely unfair playing field. Especially on sites like TikTok that are built to farm engagement.

And it turns out that when you engineer content to be addictive to the mind of a 5-year-old, it's going to be sludge content, and it's completely incomprehensible to anybody older than 7, and that's why all Internet content is now shit. The largest target demographic changed from college kids who happened to have a computer and an Internet connection, creating things for themselves, to literal babies
