The last time Ed told Stede he didn’t want to be a pirate anymore, Stede straight up left. So Ed has got up the courage to tell him again, but he’s already set up his exit. He loves himself too much to keep fighting, and he loves Stede too much to watch him be changed by it. But he doesn’t have the strength to stay and try to talk it through — he doesn’t have the courage for that yet. Not now that he’s tried and Stede’s kissed him quiet. He knows it would be so easy to let Stede talk him into staying, now that Stede is so sure of himself, and he’s not. He hasn’t found the clarity Stede found, leaving his old life behind. He signs up for the fishing crew before telling Stede because he doesn’t want to let himself be swept off his feet again and miss out on who he’s becoming. He knows whoever he’s going to be, he won’t find his way doing more of the same. He needs to leave his old life, too, make a clean break. Stede’s right, it’s a coward’s way out to just go instead of talking it through; but it’s still horribly brave. Ed finally believes again that he can find his way to be just Ed. And he knows he can’t build what he wants with Stede till he knows who that is.

My new Wireless fic is an odd one; I never expected it to be terribly popular (Draco as Christmas shop owner in small Somerset town during a heatwave - bit niche?!) but I got my confidence knocked badly early on with that fic when a couple of people I know didn't finish it. I'm lucky to be naturally pretty chill about stats, but I was a bit down IRL and almost fell into the wah wah I'm so rubbish doom spiral. Anyway! Pull yourself together, sweet, I said (well, actually @maesterchill said), and so I have. So I'm really really especially glad you like this one in particular, and that you thought to let me know!! Hugo signs, "What are you doing?" but he knows immediately that Damian doesn't see it. Damian is, after all, completely immersed in whatever it is. So immersed that he apparently had to get out of the warm bed they'd been sharing and start doing it, and not even notice when Hugo woke up. Hugo leans over to tap the paper, but leaning means he can see what Damian is doing, and it does stop him short.

It's one of the many notebooks they've started keeping by the bed, pen tucked inside, for when Damian can't sign well enough and one of them has dropped their phone. It's not great art paper--it's lined, for one thing, and the quality is too cheap. The drawing is pretty good nonetheless. Hugo doesn't need Damian to tell him it's him. It has the urgency of a sketch of a live model, especially when you haven't actually asked the model if it's okay to sketch them.

Hugo clears his throat, and whatever sound that makes does finally catch Damian's attention. He stares for a moment, like a deer caught in the headlights drawing the driver on their post-coital notebook, and then scrawls on the bottom of the page:

I can't get the details right.

Hugo snorts. "Details of what?"

Damian puts the pen down to sign, resignation screaming through his face. "You."

"Just now?" Hugo asks, knowing the answer.

"No."

Hugo considers this for a moment. Damian knows he can't get the details right because he's tried before. Damian is drawing him. When he's not around. Interesting, on so many levels. Hugo didn't know Damian was an artist, for one. Or that their relationship was at a stage where they were drawing each other. Sure, he had a few of his own pieces where the other man might have been part of the inspiration, but if you asked him if they were portraits, he would deny it in a totally normal, not at all defensive way.

It's a little much for a serious conversation, and judging by the light outside, they only have about half an hour before Kian wakes up and demands to know why he's been left. So instead, Hugo flops back onto his side of the bed, well-aware (now) that Damian is staring.

"Go ahead," he signs, smirking. "Draw me like one of your French girls."

"Asshole," Damian mouths--that's one Hugo can lip-read--before returning to his work.
