hey op, I hope you don't mind, but I might actually argue that the live action was made with non-fans in mind, as a fan of the live action, who's never been interested in one piece before now, and who didn't have any previous knowledge about the world or its lore before I started watching.

I think that the creative producers definitely sprinkled tons and tons of easter eggs for long-time fans of one piece that I most certainly missed, but the reason I argue this is because how deliberate and exact every decision of the show feels, both from the creators and the actors.

I never batted an eye over the fact that we only get Helmeppo's name once because I never felt like I needed to know his name. I knew everything I needed to know about him: he's a nepo baby and needs to be knocked down a peg. maybe more. (side-note: the build-up of his friendship with Koby is actually so well-done, I loved their friendship by the end.)

and the last shot of the smoker does excite me, but perhaps in a very different way as a non-fan. it's intriguing for me because I'm now curious as to who this person is. I want to know more! I want there to be a second season so that we can find out who this person is and why they have it out for Luffy. the way it comes across to me, is that there is a lot of people who have it out for Luffy. and all the people we know who would hold a grudge for him, we were shown their faces in that montage. we don't get to see the smoker's face, nor have we met them like we have the others, so that means he's special.

I don't remember if Sanji ever says exactly what the all blue is, and if he does, it was obviously skipped over so quickly, I don't remember it (I've only watched the live action once, so far). and I agree that it was maybe a bit more vague than it could've been, but I will also say, given Nami's explanation of how the world is laid out with the Red Line and Grand Line (and names like East Blue), I'm sure I would've worked it out in time. and I'm not saying that everyone would take away what I did; as your example shows, not everyone did. but I think the creators laid down enough clues that you could come to that conclusion eventually. that said, I don't know if the slightly different take away matters too much. at least to me.

what we learn from Sanji's episodes is:

the all blue is A place that is a legend among pirates who love cooking. like the one piece is A thing that is legend among pirates.

Sanji wants to find it. and Zeff has been searching for it for years, but has never found it. and so he also wants Sanji to find it. just like pirates want to find the one piece.

those are the stakes. and like we root for Luffy finding the one piece, we root for Sanji finding the all blue. whether we learn exactly what it is now or later.

I would like to take a moment here to go on a tangent and talk about how brilliant Nami's--and thus the narrative's--explanation of how the world is laid out in this world for non-fan viewers. it's a lot like how Hbomb talks about the naturalistic story-telling in ATLA: sometimes it might seem like it's laid on just a bit thick, but the narrative works for these scenes and earns them. when we get to that point in the story, we already know that Luffy is a shit-ass navigator. "Which way is north?" clang wakes up the entire crew on Alvida's ship (example cred goes to my friend). and Zoro says very little, nor do we get the impression that this is something he should know, reinforced in Usopp's episodes: "I thought I was heading back to the mansion." Nami, however, has been established as the navigator, so for her to make that explanation feels very natural and it's a good way to communicate information non-fans aren't going to know about the world.

now I will admit, I didn't remember Morgan being arrested until you brought it up lol. and I will also admit, I was shocked that he was put in the stockade. so maybe there are some things that could've used a little more tweaking to make it more clear. but like with the all blue thing, not everyone is going to have the same take-away, especially the non-fans, but I would argue that's not entirely a bad thing. because what that scene did communicate to me was that 1) someone was more strict and scary than a guy named Axe-Hand Morgan, and 2) that this man was, for some unexplainable reason, that we come to learn later, extremely interested in capturing Luffy. and like with the smoking person scene at the end of the series, it was intriguing to me. why is he invested in Luffy? you could maybe sum it up to him being the same man who killed Gold Roger, but, the amount of investment he shows towards capturing a no-name wannabe pirate (at this point in the story)? there's got to be more to that story.

and so, I would argue that the creators got the tension and emotional story beats down to a science; it's incredibly well done, imho. because, while there are some very minute missteps, and not every non-fan is going to take the same things away, I think the creators took great care in building to those emotional story beats, uplifted by the actors' choices. they earn those story beats and it pays off.

Nami explaining how the world is laid out is one of them. another example is after Zoro's fight with Mihawk. up to that point, we have seen Luffy be an absolute glutton. going so far as to scarf down an entire pot of poison soup and not thinking twice about it. so when Nami tells Luffy to go back into the Baratie, and he says, "I'm not hungry." you understand just how worried he is about Zoro and, pardon my pun here, just how much it's eating him up on the inside.

a few other things I'd like to gush about:

in the first episode, during Gold Roger's speech, they pause on a few key people. I could tell they would be important later. except for a blonde-haired person we don't see again. intriguing 👀 but the red-haired man? sure enough, it's Shanks. the pink-haired boy? sure enough, it's Koby.

the interspersing of Zoro's backstory with him climbing out of the well. when young Zoro loses, present Zoro slips or falls. poetic cinema.

Sanji's backstory: when we're first introduced to him, he obviously has a history with Zeff. their supposed animosity, enhanced by the actors' choices, tells you that they have some kind of backstory. it's like when a Character A says Character B is "an old friend." when we get into Sanji's backstory, I could tell, just by him being on that first ship and his relationship with the chef there, that he'd run away from home. his fighting scenes told me that there's something else going on in his past because Zeff doesn't seem like the type of fighter Sanji is.

During Nami's backstory, I was able to work out that she joined Arlong's crew to buy back her town's freedom, based on what we learn from others before we finally see things from Nami's point of view.

the end scene: when we get to the end scene, and everyone is announcing their dream, it feels earned, because the creators laid that groundwork. they put that work in. they set things up, and the audience got their pay-off. the actors are so sincere you can't help but root for all of them.

now, of course, I'm not saying that I speak for every non-fan out there, but I did want to comment, as a non-fan myself.

for me at least, the tension is still there because the creators were able to build that into the narrative. the plot-points and emotional beats hit the target because of the groundwork in every single episode that builds to those points.

I've commented this a couple times to my friend, who does have slightly more of a history with once piece than I do: when condensing such a long story into 6 short episodes, they did what Sideways talks about in his Mulan video, about how to adapt a musical into a non-musical and vice versa. when you're doing that adaptation, you want to put the emotional story beats that exist within the songs into emotional scenes (or you want to make those emotional story beats into songs). and I think the once piece live action achieved that.

the live action feels like it was made for non-fans in mind, but like it was also made as a love-letter to long-time fans, and Oda himself.

i've been watching a couple of youtubers who weren't one piece fans as they react to the live action, and i feel like it's really highlighted just how much the series was made with existing one piece fans in mind, people who had already read the manga or watched the anime

don't get me wrong, there's more than enough in there for new fans to enjoy it and get to know the characters and learn to love the world but

did you know that in the whole series they only ever say helmeppo's name once? (that i noticed, at least)

that last shot in episode 8 with smoker in it...of course it's exciting for people who already know who he is because we want to see him, but does it actually do anything for people who don't know who he is? all it shows is some guy sitting in a dark room who seems to have it out for luffy. i mean he's got the highest bounty in the east blue, there's gotta be countless guys gunning for him at this point

did sanji ever mention that the all blue is meant to be a stretch of ocean? i know it seems obvious to us, given the naming conventions of the other four seas, but that's a pretty easy connection to miss. there's this one channel i was watching where they mentioned the all blue as a restaurant.

or even just going back to like episode 2...why exactly was morgan arrested in the first place? sure, he lied to garp about what exactly happened when the pirates raided the base, and i understand him getting reprimanded, but getting arrested is going a bit far, isn't it? from the manga we know that he was terrorizing the townspeople, and was abusing his soldiers, but in the live action we didn't actually see him being a particularly awful commanding officer. hell, we even see him get upset that zoro sent four of his soldiers to the infirmary

and like none of this is me dunking on the live action. i was a HUGE fan of it (obviously, given i started off this post by saying that i've been watching reaction videos on youtube), i've seen the whole thing probably 5 or 6 times at this point and it's literally just been out a week.

i guess it's just really funny to me because like i didn't really notice just how much of the tension or plot points build off the assumption of you having a certain base knowledge of the world.

📺 Streamer Mode!

I've been told that it's difficult to stream and monetise age-restricted videos on YouTube and Twitch, so I added an option to remove the sexual content and strong language used in the demo.

Now y'all can invite Ren into your bed for cuddles without putting your streamer career on the line /silly /lh

This won't affect the 18+ rating or dark themes/elements of the game, however! Although Streamer Mode will prevent you from seeing any "gruesome" CGs in the future, most of the core elements of the game will still be tied to the choices and decisions you make. So you won't miss out on the overall experience by using streamer mode!!

⚙️ Custom Pronouns!

It only took me one entire year to get around to it, but you can finally choose your own preferred pronouns (or use a set of pronouns instead)... At the cost of being able to change them mid-game ^^;

Since the original pronoun screen wouldn't update until a new scene was displayed, I temporarily disabled the feature. But once I find a workaround, I'll bring it back!

💗 Choose how others perceive you!

You can now choose how the cast and narration perceive you! Originally, the narration was kept strictly gender-neutral (outside of pronouns and genitalia picked by the player), but this will soon change in future updates.

For more clarity: you don't get to choose the words specifically, but you can choose between masculine, feminine, and androgynous terms!

📋 Separate top and bottom genitalia!

You can now choose your tatas and pps separately! >:3

Alongside that, you can also choose your preferred body type!

I removed the "both" genitalia option because a few players still assumed it was an obscure version of "intersex". That wasn't my intention and I don't want to mislead anyone, so I took it out for now ^^;

I also didn't want to include a screenshot of the new genitalia choices in action (because it's NSFW), so y'all get the same character menu screen for the nth time instead lmao

📱 Relationship Screen Overhaul!

You can now change your own status for more immersion, and long-term Server Boosters will eventually be able to submit and use their own icon within the game as well!

Stalking finding your friends has now become easier by using "Buddy Maps"; a new app that allows you to see the location of all the cast members!

I want to offer players more incentive to check the relationship screen since they tend to miss the status updates, so hopefully this might help ;v;

It also says it "updates every few hours" so folks don't go overboard and check every 5 seconds to see where Ren is gdsghf (also keep in mind that he's a hacker lol)

🖤 Additional Scenes Update!

Day 2 received a brand new CG!!!!! Originally, I planned on only adding a few CGs sporadically throughout the game, but it didn't feel right to leave Day 2 so... empty... so I added a brand new CG to (hopefully) make things feel more balanced and natural!

If you decline Teo's offer on Day 3, Leon will now call and try to convince you to reconsider. However, players are still allowed to decline, and if they do, they'll reach a dead end.

After listening to feedback on itch, I changed some of the dialogue during Days 1-3 to make it seem more consistent! They're only small changes though, so it's honestly not worth looking for sdgjssga

🎶 Updated BGM and SFX!

I wanted to try out a different style of music to see if it fits the vibe of 14DWY more! The BGM features more acoustics to suit the "beachy" theme of Corland Bay, though I made a conscious effort to include piano elements as well to stay true to the original!!

I figured it'd be better to give players a live example before I make a poll (to see if they prefer the change or not) and publish it to Itch.

Some new SFX have also been added, though it's very minimal and honestly not that noticeable.

How to download and play the update?

Alternatively, you can also wait until the update is publicly released on Itch to play it as well!! (It normally gets released shortly after a round of QA testing/getting feedback from the server, though I may release it earlier if I feel like it hehe ^^)

for the AU: Im mostly using the corpo talk in the lens of it being a coping mechanism (hear me out) to feel she has control of her situation.

The DD’s are all kinda caricatures when we first meet em, they’re hella traumatized:

With N being the most “normal” w his personality because, and I say this lightly, he’s the least traumatized of the bunch w/o his memories at present. He copes by being a bit of a fawner + he tries to befriend virtually anything. he eventually learns to grow away from letting people push him over (thanks Uzi <3)

V tries to cope in her bloodlust, shes very clearly not doing well in the first few eps lol, but we see her -gradually- mellow out from it, once she’s got a stable support system. she goes from "I feel nothing" to being very ride or die for N (she already was tbh) and Uzi.

then we get to J, and I wonder how the power of friendship (jesus) would have properly grounded her character.

I genuinely see J enjoying being a business bro, so I like to HC that she played it up at the manor being surrounded by Jcjenson employees/ authority figures. that translated into a insane boss/employee larp on C9- as a way to cope and feel a semblance of control in her hopeless situation.

Second, Law and Luffy at the pool headcanon bc it's over 100 degrees where I am rn. Luffy cannonballs in before they even set up their chairs and Law just stares at him. He refuses to get in, so Luffy has to surprise him and push him in. He's mad, but then Luffy laughs and all is forgiven because he is the sucker for Luffy's laugh/smile.

"At this rate, the children might be targeted next."

Deep sighs echo through the giant room, walls with a shiny blue sheen glowing under the light of the fake sun, shining brightly in contrast to the gloomy expressions on the faces of everyone present. "We've warned them not to go past the barrier, and most are smart enough not to disobey when they've seen what happened to our people." They shake their heads, some with arms crossed and their brows the arched with concern and fury, thinking back on the brave souls who had made it home, away from the insistent attacks from those... Pirates-- that's what those humans had called themselves.

"Konche still hasn't returned. He might be-..."

One figure turns, expression blank as he silently tries to walk out of the hall. But he's stopped with a heavy 'wait right there', and he gives a defeated roll of his shoulders, turning back to the elders of his kin.

"You don't know what humans will do if we attack them," the old man starts grimly. They are weaker by nature but stronger in numbers, they have always spoken this truth and he... lifts his head, eyes cold amethyst and pink, stopping any more words from the elder. He knew better than anyone here what they could do to them, the Lemurians. Because they knew this, knew of his failure, the pity in some and the understanding in others, he is able to walk out without another word. It is the rule of the Deep Sea. It is a survival of the fittest. If one doesn't attack first, they will become prey to bigger fish.

Luckily for them, in their seas, they had the advantage.

"Rafayel!"

A bluenette runs towards him from the direction of Whalefall city, stopping before him. Algie, her beautiful braid coming loose, looks up at him with the same look of hope and determination, fiery rage in her eyes just as bright as she steps up towards him. "Are you going up there? I'll come with you, help you distract them if you need! Those greedy humans, they deserve to be capsized and eaten by the sharks for taking my little brother!" Rafayel lets out a silent huff through his nose, much preferring this over the dull atmosphere within the hall. "No, I'll make a better distraction," he starts with a wave of his hand, watching as the woman looks ready to fight him in protest. "I need you to take Konche back safely while I deal with them." Since they don't know what state he is in.

With an understanding nod, they swim out towards the edge of the barrier where the usual sea creatures standing guard let them pass without a knock back behind the gates, rushing up to the top. Algie looks around, on high alert and scrunching her nose in distaste as thunder crashes on the surface of the raging sea. A perfect setting, and he signs, directing Algie to the side of the ship while he floats up, emerging through the waves and standing still on the surface as the waves by his feet go still under his power. The ship is already unstable, swaying from side to side as tall waves crash on its side, water filling the deck as it slowly sinks, and sinks. The sea knows, there is fury burning under his skin.

"There's something out there!"

Finally, he's seen. Tilting his head up with a languid toss to the side, he raises his hand and pulls a flute out from his sash. The sharp melody pierces through the storm, his eyes giving the shortest of glances towards Algie who climbs the side of the ship and onto deck, covered in a thick cloak as she blends in, hidden from the pirates running to stare at his show as she finds her brother. It is easy, to play a daring tune that weaves itself through the air, into the water which heeds his calls.

One by one, tendrils of water crash into men.

As soon as they are within the sea, no level of swimming prowess could save them from the water entering their lungs, pressure pulling them downwards as if the water was sentient and was punishing those who wronged its children. If only that were the truth.

The water calms as the sound of his flute ceases, the loud splash of water catching his attention and he sees the vibrant glow of scales as Konche is plunged into the sea with Algie's arms wrapped tightly around him. The ship now sways, eerily quiet in the night as pelts of rain continue to drip. Rafayel takes a languid stroll towards the ship, hand reaching up to touch the engravings on the side, another step as he stares at the anchor the size of a whale's child. Then he hears it, a spurting sound followed by coughs. A survivor, one that he looks down at and blinks slowly. Hmm... it wouldn't hurt to bring someone in for questioning.

It doesn't matter if he dies, or lives. If left here to fend for himself, he would easily be eaten up by the waves in seconds before the fish even got to him. But out of curiosity and the lingering anger running through his veins, he crouches down, feet balanced on the surface of the water as he reaches out, tilting the man's face up by the chin like one would to a pet. He was a bit ugly, but not as much as the others he saw knocked off the ship.

"Do you want to live?"

No matter his answer, Rafayel simply shrugs and picks him up by the arm, tossing him into the Deep Sea.
