I have this small, deeply personal headcanon that after his grandmother's passing, Alhaitham's home was so unbearably quiet that he started--just barely, just one or two words--to speak out loud to her as if she was still there.

"I debated with Haravatat's sage."

Just that, and quiet again.

But one day, it's: "I met someone strange."

it took me an embarrassingly long time to realise that Arizona Robbins from Grey’s Anatomy and Maura Isles from Rizzoli & Isles are played by two different actresses who are completely unrelated. usually if i see an actor in a show who i think is familiar, i would search them up to be certain, but with Sasha Alexander and Jessica Capshaw i had literally no doubt in my mind that they were the same person. their voices sound the same, even. everyone i ask thinks that they don’t look or sound similar at all. my mother was like "i guess they’re both sort of blonde…". but then a few people online are like "yes they look just like each other and talk the same, it’s uncanny". no one ever talks about it and i never see them listed when people discuss celebrity lookalikes. a select few people on forums from like 2010 think they must be twins or clones. people either don’t see the resemblance at all, or think they look exactly the same, no in between. they’re the blue&black vs white&gold dress of doppelgängers. like the top two, they look totally different. the bottom two, very similar. just imagine i gave you an image with no context and asked you which one of them it was, would you know for absolute certain? it’s like they simultaneously have identical features, and also they look nothing alike. i’m so confused

So the paper pleasers purpose is to serve, to please, and they wish to ascend, and as such are actively putting themselves in harm's way so this can happen. But Jaune continuously "saves" them so they remain trapped. And yet, every time he does, they still praise him and thank him for doing a good job of protecting them, even though this goes against their own wishes.

"three cheers for our rusted knight!"

"thank you brave knight!"

The paper pleasers see Jaune's purpose, what he is, is being the Knight, the hero, and serve him by being the damsels in distress he can continuously save over and over, so that he can feel fufilled.

"because I can actually protect these people!"

But because of this arrangement, neither Jaune or the paper pleasers can grow. Jaune can't admit he needs help and embrace his own vulnerabilities, the paper pleasers can't become more resilient and able to take care of themselves. They've stagnated. But then the tower falls (The Fall of Beacon, the tower falling, Pyrrha dying) and the town and paper pleasers have been washed away by the flood of water, (the fall of Atlas being flooded, Penny dying) and following this the tide of everything Jaune has been holding in comes pouring out.

And as always with water, this gives way to a time of rebirth, of reflection and change.

(also sidenote I love the paper pleasers they're so adorable, I hope we get to see them ascend and what they change into.)
