Do you ever read game reset tenderbomb? It's a really good Makoto in sdr2 where he remember thh. Also, can you tell me more about Makoto and Shuichi dynamic with Angie in Makoto in ndrv3?

I think Shuichi is already pretty curious about Angie in the canon free time events, but he also takes a lot of Angie's behavior at face value, and I feel like Makoto (at least based on how he read Celeste at the end of trial 3 in THH) wouldn't do that quite as much. I feel like he'd have a slightly better sense of when Angie is joking or covering up a feeling, etc. (All of which I'm basing on my own understanding of Angie's character.)

As far as how each of them interact with her 1-on-1, I'd say Shuichi's free time events go the same as in canon.

Makoto asks Angie about herself and gets nowhere, because she keeps describing herself as a vessel for God and refuses to see herself as an Ultimate Artist when she's just being used by God to make art. He asks her about her home and gets more information; she likes talking about her home (albeit in a really tropey way that makes it hard to not think about the writing from a Doylist, what-were-they-thinking perspective). He asks her about her feelings about being away from home (Something like, "It sounds like you miss it," or "It sounds like you liked it there."), and that brings him closer to actually learning about Angie as a person.

The thing is, while Shuichi's responses to Angie are more reactive to her shenanigans, I think Makoto would really try to address her individuality and her excellence in ways Angie is not comfortable with. She wants attention, affection, and companionship, but she is unable to accept it except through her religion, and I don't think Makoto would engage with her religion pretty much at all. He insists on treating her like a person.

Basically, I think if Makoto were even slightly less genuine and likable than he is, Angie would react very badly to him, but because Makoto is himself, he becomes kind of an indulgence on Angie's part. She lowkey feels guilty for being friends with him, because she shouldn't be letting someone treat her like she isn't an oracle of God before everything else.

(Hence what I said in the other post, where, once she goes off the deep end with the student council stuff, him trying to appeal to her causes her to lash out and call him a heretic to all her followers.)

When the two of them are together, their vibes toward Angie are tentatively positive. Shuichi thinks she's kind of weird and isn't sure what to really make of her, and since he takes everything she says and does pretty much at face value, he's kind of scared of her a little. Makoto is kind of more worried about Angie. He's aware that she could be really dangerous if she wanted to be, but there are more undertones of Is she okay? from him than from Shuichi. And Shuichi subconsciously processes that Makoto is friends with Angie and he wants to see her the way Makoto does, so he's slightly more open to Angie than in canon.

I like to think enough changes happen in this version of events that some of Angie's actual internal issues get dealt with or addressed on some level. Even if she does still die in this version of events, I like to think she lives long enough for the group at large to reach a better understanding of her.

favorite thing about them

Counter-intuitive, but I know my past self (including the era when V3 came out) would have hated Kokichi for the same reasons I like him now. Mainly:

I really did go into V3 expecting to loathe Kokichi as a nuisance at best; I’d been spoiled on Ch. 4  before getting into DR because I thought ‘my aim sucks I won’t play it anyway’  and, loving bees and assorted bugs as I do, I figured Gonta would be my favorite. And I mean, he’s up there, but this little shit. How dare he be an engaging character.

Unsure where I said it previously, but Kokichi seems like the kind of guy who would run a How to Beat [X Movie] channel out of earnest (admit so or not) love for the thought experiment of it all, which isn’t just relatable, but a very interesting Type of Guy to have in your killing game scenario. The one constantly pushing the boundaries, but not quite meta-level aware they’re in a video game; genre-savvy and trying to Actually Accomplish Something Constructive. He also goes about it in such a way that launches a couple malatovs at every bridge he has, which, having been anxious and overly rejection-sensitive in high school, is fucking wild to me. You are going about this in the worst way you could, on purpose, and that is fascinating. Mentally I am putting him in a microscope slide because What Is Your Deal

Plus, the way he constantly has some kind of front up to a point where Saihara can’t decide who he really is by the end of Ch. 5… hmm chameleon complex? I find it quite simple, really. Unclear to me if they meant to make him Like This but doubling down on constant over-performance of social signals because communicating frustrates you and it lets you feel some small degree of control in your life is (in my experience at least) very autistic of him and as a result hearing the whole V3 cast consider him entirely indecipherable down to the bitter end… oof ouch real anxieties?

A) Some of the iconography they chose for his talent. Which I’m pretty sure they pretty much ditched outside promos? So B) Some of his art in the wake of Ch. 4 is… wonky, but not in a way that looks fully deliberate? It undercuts the drama for me a bit. I think Kokichi seems much more menacing when he drops pretenses entirely and just goes blank instead of trying Very Hard to act out a particular emotion (like he does pretty much all the time). Instead of the demon face, something more like this?

I've drawn him in skirts doing outfit memes, but I think for him it's less concrete than feeling like dressing femme sometimes and more that, post-game and organization-less, he has no idea who he's supposed to be anymore and is throwing pretty much everything at the wall in many facets of his life. Including but not limited to saying 'screw uniforms' and seeing how long it takes him to get in trouble with HPA for wearing different clothes every day. After long enough unchallenged he starts getting his classmates to do it too. Considering... their entire circumstances in TAPP, they get away with a lot more than the other classes

Is it unpopular to say that some of the info from Kokichi’s FTEs should have been in the main plot? The knife game scene, besides being my favorite, seriously clues the player into what he’s like beyond the artifice without having to posthumously dump that exposition in his room, and that a lot of players confused by him are likely to miss out on characterization that would clarify things Irks Me.

When looking at games with obvious metafiction elements in their stories, you always see this "deny and condemn the meta" response crop up. In Undertale/DeltaRune I think it's a relatively small scale phenomenon; most people over there are obsessed with the meta, if maybe in a way that's divorced from the text of games, but you still see people determined to wish it away? And it just got me thinking about why that is. What is it about metafiction that makes people so angry they want it gone?

I'm saving my analysis of Nirvana Initiative for the essay, but the backlash there has a lot in common with the response to NDRv3. New Dangan Ronpa v3 is a Dangan Ronpa title about Dangan Ronpa. In typical DR fashion, the meta-commentary is in your face, and at least half the fanbase fucking hates it. There is a loud contingent of DR fans who constantly complain about chapter 6, and how it ruined the entire series by making everything that came before it including the HPA saga unimportant and not real, and they try super hard to negate it, and when they can't, they just criticize the game even harder. That used to be me too! I used to be unbearable back then, but you can find old posts on this blog of me poking holes in it as an in universe plot element/mystery solution, or criticizing its inclusion of a mean-spirited audience depiction that reads like a criticism of the actual DR fanbase, or for wasting my time and telling me I shouldn't care.

But that last one is what I think lies at the heart of it. A lot of the criticisms of the meta for all the titles I mentioned boils down to this: people, or at least gamers, really chafe against metafiction because to them being reminded it's fiction is the same as being told 'it's not real so you should not care. I am wasting your time.' They get really attached to the characters, and the story--they get immersed in the world like it is as real as the PC they play it on, and then they are reminded that it's just a video game, and that hurts. It feels like getting trampled on. I know when I first played v3 I felt the same way.

I understand where this response comes from, but I have since grown up a little. I still believe that the execution of v3's meta needed revision, but the way I used to talk about it, and the way many of its detractors still do, is unearned. Kodaka is not a subtle writer about communicating his thesis. "Even if something is a lie, even if it's fiction.... If it has the power to change the world, then it must contain some kind of truth." It was just a story, with characters in a scripted plot constructed by writers and developers, but you cared about the illusion as though it were real life, right? You got attached to characters, invested in the plot, you cried or laughed or screamed--it spoke to you. "Was this lie able to change something? Was this lie able to change someone? If it was able to change even the smallest thing......Then the story isn't over." Fiction will always matter because it did something, however small, for wonderfully real you. All it evoked, every thought and feeling and comment and criticism, everything that story meant to you lives within your visceral beating heart.

All narratives are a humble wish that you leave changed if only in a tiny way. Metafiction is just a tool. It calls to you, makes you think about the work as fiction, so creators can speak directly to you about art. How do you engage with it? What are you getting when you do so? What is it about art that draws us in time and time again? I love metafiction because I love art. I love all the ways it provokes something in people; I think it's magical beyond compare. That's why I write! Art is a gift from the artist/s to their audience. What does that gift mean to you?

twilight sparkle: when i watched mlp i thought she was in high school but now i think shes actually in her 20s which honestly makes the show funnier. the perfect time for learning about the magic of friendship. i think its too bad that she didnt get as many opportunities to be like dorky n stuff in the later seasons like she got all character developed out.. like a distant fondness ritsu kageyama: this guy is the emotional blueprint for how i feel about alphinaud ffxiv lol. like in middle school i was like damn im just like im just like him fr  but now its like aww my little scrunklydoo.. its like this wave of affection for my little fictional guy. i want to see him get self destructively embroiled in a mess beyond his control and also hes 13 years old... ruffles his hair dirk strider/hal: he is the moment. etc or i mean he was the moment several years ago. actually i was thinking about this post because yesterday bc of neils post i was like wow dirk strider and i spent 30 minutes thinking about him instead of going to sleep. anyways like yk how across act 6 his solution to like everything is to kill himself like he literally invented kill herself disease..to the point where its literally a meme but its still true. i dont think i like resonate with that as much as i did when i was originally reading it, and i have even more mixed feelings about all of the epilogues/hs2 stuff but its still like omg. one of the only times his suicide by proxy didnt work was with hal was bc hal was not just a proxy but also a Whole Nother Person and he was scared to die..arent you.. no way.. anyways i keep him in a little box terezi pyrope: i still really like her but i think the alpha kids are more easily removable from the context of hs’ plot yk theyre so self contained. terezi on the other hand is very connected to remembering what happens in hs, which i definitely dont. sotp was really good though. in some hypothetical future where i reread hs i think i would try and pay more attention to her interactions w other kids in the context of her rship with vriska instead of taking them standalone.i think i also just personally connect less with her themes n whatever but like truly nobody else has done it like her ouma: surprisingly even though i still have this guy as a pfp on another email i dont feel that much about him anymore. its like ah ndrv3 was pretty bad huh. theres other fish in the sea.. when lovepoints posts art of him its like :] though. glad to have danganronpa start to leech out of my psyche tbh it was fun while it lasted goro akechi: surprisingly i still really like this guy. i think part of it is that p5r ended up being such a serve like yeah persona 5s writing is usually bad but i think its really great that he did get to be a grumpy bitch. hmm not a lot of actual thoughts about him but a delight to have in class kim dokja: ahhhh *explode*

🌺 hi! im aed/meria, and my friends have finally bullied me into making a dr blog because i have worms in my brain. 🐛

im both an artist and a writer and i will try to post some of the stuff ive done soon! i was putting off posting my fics for a long time because i was embarrassed but now that this exists i guess i have no excuse. as for art, i dont have a load of time for it, and when i do its rarely anything finished (plus my laptop is definitely on its last legs 😔) but ive still got some stuff, and its very gay, so hopefully people like that

im gonna state for the record im Primarily obsessed with sdr2. dr1 is fine but im not all that attached to the characters, and my relationship with ndrv3 is extremely toxic and unhealthy and we should probably seek relationship counseling because its getting a little out of hand. i also am the kind of person who thinks way too fucking hard about things that truly do not matter all that much, and i do insane amounts of research in order for a single piece of dialogue in a fic to be realistic, so my main brain space is occupied by logistics of the remnants of despair and post sdr2 canon events, so expect mostly content about the five survivors, both canon and in aus

i got into dr bc of scout of clown_depot and papermariowiki fame and because my boyfriend made me watch the streams they and their friends did of that game and it did irrevocable damage to my brain. specifically, hajime and fuyuhiko grabbed my brain stem in their fists and decided it was theirs, so im ngl im probably gonna mostly post about them.
